Z-scheme structure is an effectively construction to improve the photocatalytic activity due to the excellent photo-generated electron-hole pairs separation efficiency. In this paper, the Er 3+ :YAlO 3 @(PdS/BiPO 4 )/(Au/rGO), (Au/rGO)/CdS and modified Z-scheme Er 3+ :YAlO 3 @(PdS/BiPO 4 )/(Au/rGO)/CdS photocatalysts were prepared by hydrothermal, ultrasonic dispersion, deposition-precipitation and ultrasonic-assisted methods. The prepared samples were characterized by X-ray diffractometer (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS), fourier transform infrared spectra (FT-IR), raman spectra and photoluminescence (PL) spectra. The photocatalytic activity of prepared samples were evaluated via photocatalytic conversion rate of nitrite under ultraviolet-light and simulated solar-light irradiations. Due to the enhanced separation efficiency of electron-hole pairs, the Er 3+ :YAlO 3 @(PdS/BiPO 4 )/(Au/rGO)/CdS exhibited excellent performance under both ultraviolet-light and simulated solar-light irradiation, reaching 94.59% and 91.25% conversion rates, respectively. Meanwhile, the effects of simulated solar-light irradiation time and corresponding reaction kinetics on photocatalytic conversion of nitrite were studied. Subsequently, the effects of electron and hole scavengers were investigated to further elaborate the possible mechanism. In addition, the study of used times showed that the prepared modified Z-scheme Er 3+ :YAlO 3 @(PdS/BiPO 4 )/(Au/rGO)/CdS nanocomposites can be effectively recycled without an apparent inactivation on photocatalytic activity. This research may provide a potential way by utilizing solar energy efficiently for converting nitrite and other contaminants released into the environment.

The creation of a Z-scheme heterojunction is a sophisticated strategy to enhance photocatalytic efficiency. In our study, we synthesized an In 2 S 3 /MnO 2 /BiOCl dual Z-scheme heterostructure by growing BiOCl nanoplates on the sheets of In 2 S 3 nanoflowers, situated on the surface of MnO 2 nanowires. This synthesis involved a combination of hydrothermal and solution combustion methods. Experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrated that the In 2 S 3 /MnO 2 /BiOCl composite exhibited notable photo reduction performance and photocatalytic stability. This was attributed to the pivotal roles of BiOCl and MnO 2 in the composite, acting as auxiliaries to enhance the electronic structure and facilitate the adsorption/activation capacity of CO 2 and H 2 O. The yield rates of CO, CH 4 , and C 2 H 4 over In 2 S 3 /MnO 2 /BiOCl as the catalyst were 3.94, 5.5, and 3.64 times higher than those of pure In 2 S 3 , respectively. Photoelectrochemical analysis revealed that the dual Z-scheme heterostructure, with its oxygen vacancies and large surface area, enhanced CO 2 absorption and active sites on the nanoflower/nanowire intersurfaces. Consequently, the dual Z-scheme charge transfer pathway provided efficient channels for boosting electron transfer and charge separation, resulting in high C 2 H 4 , CH 4 , and CO yields of formed and exihibits an promising photoreduction rate of CO 2 to CO (51.2 µmol/g.h), CH 4 (42.4 µmol/g.h) and C 2 H 4 (63.2 µmol/g.h), respectively. DFT, in situ Diffuse reflectance infrared fourier transform spectroscopy, and temperature-programmed desorption tests were employed to verify the intermediates pathway. The study proposed a potential photocatalytic mechanism based on these findings.

In the quest to enhance photocatalytic performance, structural regulation and interface engineering stand out as effective strategies for amplifying active sites and fostering the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. In this study, a pioneering approach was employed, utilizing a straightforward two-step calcination method to prepare a novel photocatalyst : porous graphite carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 , CN) nanosheets (NS) loaded with mesoporous cerium oxide (CeO 2 /CNNS). The distinctive architecture of CeO 2 /CNNS not only elevates the specific surface area and catalytic active sites but also facilitates efficient mass transfer. Experimental results and density functional theory (DFT) calculations corroborate the existence of an internal electric field (IEF) within the Z-scheme heterojunction formed by uniformly dispersed CeO 2 and CNNS. This IEF proves pivotal in promoting charge separation and migration, thereby maintaining robust redox capabilities. Under visible light irradiation, CeO 2 /CNNS demonstrates an impressive 4.2-fold increase in the hydrogen production rate compared to bulk g-C 3 N 4 (BCN), coupled with a 48.5% boost in the photocatalytic degradation rate constant (k) of tetracycline (TC). This study not only unveils the innovative design of CeO 2 /CNNS but also paves the way for a fresh perspective on the design and preparation of multifunctional photocatalysts.

In recent years, piezo-photocatalysis has become a promising strategy for solving environmental pollution problems by adding additional mechanical energy to the photocatalysis process. This work reported the effective synthesis of a variety of HKUST-1/BiVO4 heterogeneous materials by combining monoclinic BiVO4 and porous HKUST-1 semiconductors. The piezo-photocatalytic properties of HKUST-1/BiVO4 were studied by the reduction of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) under visible-light irradiation and ultrasonic waves. In the piezo-photocatalysis process, the best reduction rates among as-prepared HKUST-1/BiVO4 composites were up to 96.20% of 10 ppm Cr(VI) solution, which was approximately 1.80 times that under visible light and about 4.13 times that under ultrasound. Under the action of the piezoelectric potential, the availability of free radicals increased the reduction rate of Cr(VI) and reached a synergistic effect of 1.14-fold.

Bi 2 WO 6 /g-C 3 N 4 (BC) Z -scheme heterojunction assembled with graphene aerogel (GA) was successfully prepared by a simple hydrothermal associated with natural seasoning method. The physico-chemical, morphological and photoelectric properties of the Bi 2 WO 6 /g-C 3 N 4 /GA (BCGA) composite was characterized by various instruments, and its photocatalysis performance for persulfate (PDS) activation was explored in the removal of ciprofloxacin (CIP) under simulated sunlight (SSL) irradiation. The optimal mass ratio of BC was 30 % (abbreviated as BCGA-30) in BCGA. Under the optimal conditions (10 mg/L CIP, 50 mg/L PDS, pH = 6.66 and 0.2 g/L BCGA-30), the degradation rate of CIP was 94.3 %, which was 4.18 times that of BC. As the carrier of BC, GA could promote the light absorption and the photo-induced electron transfer of BCGA-30. The removal efficiency of CIP was remained at 80.2 % after five cycles, illustrating that BCGA-30 had an excellent repeatability. Based on the results of the energy band structures , HR-TEM, XPS and free radical quenching experiments, the heterojunction type of composites and possible photocatalytic activation mechanism during CIP degradation were confirmed over BCGA-30/PDS/SSL system. The BCGA-30/PDS/SSL system might be a potential treatment process for the removal of antibiotics wastewater.

High-energy ionizing radiation brings serious challenges to medical professionals, and it demands efficient and lightweight shielding materials depending on high-Z elements and structural supporting matrices. Herein, we have integrated multiple high-Z elements and multilayer structures into composite films with interlayer scattering effects for constructing high-energy X-ray shielding clothes. A series of composite films containing different combinations of X-ray shielding particles (SnO 2 , BaSO 4 , and Bi 2 O 3 ) were prepared in tightly connected two layers with each layer consisting of corresponding hybrid polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fibers-reinforced hybrid thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) coating. The optimized composite film L Ba3.7 /L Bi3.7 avoids lead toxicity and has a tensile strength of 17.92 MPa and high flexibility due to the reinforcing effect of PAN hybrid fibers. The L Ba3.7 /L Bi3.7 with a density of ∼ 2.98 g cm −3 and a thickness of 2.24 mm exhibits 18 % lighter than the 0.5 mmPb lead apron. Owing to the combination of multiple particles and layer structures, the absorption and interlayer scattering effects of L Ba3.7 /L Bi3.7 are leveraged to confer a high X-ray shielding efficiency of 96.3 % at 100 keV, surpassing single-element films and closing to 0.5 mmPb lead apron. This work offers a viable strategy for developing flexible, lightweight, and efficient wearable materials for high-energy X-ray shielding.

Building a heterojunction is a fascinating option to guarantee sufficient carrier separation and transfer efficiency, but the mechanism of charge migration at the heterojunction interface has not been thoroughly studied. Herein, MIL-53(Fe)/Bi 4 O 5 I 2 photocatalyst with a Z-scheme heterojunction structure is constructed, which achieves efficient photocatalytic decontamination under solar light. Driven by the newly-built internal electric field (IEF), the formation of Fe-O-Bi electron migration channel allows for rapid separation and transfer of charge carriers at the heterojunction interface, confirmed by the material characterization and density functional theory (DFT) calculation. The narrower band gap and improved visible light response also contribute to the enhanced photocatalytic activity of composite materials. With levofloxacin as the target pollutant, the optimal MIL-53(Fe)/Bi 4 O 5 I 2 achieves complete removal of pollutant within 150 min, the photocatalysis rate of which is ca. 4.4 and 26.0 times that of pure Bi 4 O 5 I 2 and MIL-53(Fe), respectively. Simultaneously, the optimal composite material exhibits satisfactory photodegradation of seven fluoroquinolones, and the photocatalysis rates are as follows: lomefloxacin > ciprofloxacin > enrofloxacin > norfloxacin > pefloxacin > levofloxacin > marbofloxacin. DFT calculations reveal a positive relationship between degradation rate and Fukui index (ƒ 0 ) of main carbon atoms in seven fluoroquinolones. This study sheds light on the existence of electron migration channels at Z-scheme heterojunction interface to ensure sufficient photoinduced carrier transfer, and reveals the influence of pollutant structure on photolysis rate.

Photocatalysis has emerged as one of the most promising technologies for formaldehyde purification owing to its green, safe, and cost-effective properties. However, most photocatalysts exhibit poor light absorption properties and exist as powders, limiting their large-scale application. To address this challenge, Ag-AgCl@TiO 2 @cellulose nanofiber porous composites were prepared by integrating the photocatalysts into a cellulose matrix through physical/chemical dual crosslinking, photoreduction, and freeze-drying. The materials exhibited excellent mechanical properties due to the hydrogen bonding and electrostatic adsorption interactions between the components. Moreover, the porous composites exhibited excellent synergistic adsorption–photocatalytic degradation performance for formaldehyde. This is attributed to the abundant polar functional groups in the cellulose nanofibers and the heterostructure formed by TiO 2 , Ag, and AgCl. The composites achieved a maximum photocatalytic degradation rate of 99.54 %. After five cycles of reuse, they still maintained a high degradation efficiency of 99.07 %, demonstrating excellent recyclability. Compared with similar materials, the synthesized porous composites performed well in terms of degradation rate, maximum degradation efficiency, and cyclic reutilization performance. In summary, this study provides an innovative approach to air purification.

In recent years, eliminating impurities from wastewater has become increasingly crucial. Photocatalytic technology has become a viable strategy for degrading organic pollutants. This study created novel Z-scheme TiO 2 -modified g-C 3 N 4 using a solvent-tunable, two-step method. The optimized TiO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 -Et/vis system demonstrated a removal efficiency of 94.4 % for acetaminophen (ATP) within 40 min and 91.0 % for methylparaben (MPB) within 100 min. Furthermore, the system maintained 92.7 % ATP degradation efficiency after five cycles, indicating excellent recoverability and sustainability. Photochemical tests and mechanistic studies revealed that solvent modulation and TiO 2 modification increased the specific surface area and facilitated the formation of Z-scheme heterojunctions. These heterojunctions effectively inhibit the recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and enhanced the degradation efficiency of organic pollutants, primarily driven by •O 2 − . LC-MS analysis found the intermediates of ATP and MPB, and several potential routes of degradation were suggested. This work sheds fresh light on the production of high-performance TiO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 nanoparticles for applications related to energy and the environment.

MoS 2 quantum dots decorated g-C 3 N 4 /AgI Z -scheme heterostructures were successfully prepared and applied in tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) degradation and Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) disinfection upon visible light exposure. The ternary heterojunction achieved highly efficient photocatalytic abilities, which could eliminate 82.8 % of TCH in 50 min and absolutely kill E. coli in 40 min, superior to those of bare g-C 3 N 4 , AgI, g-C 3 N 4 /MoS 2 and g-C 3 N 4 /AgI binary composites. Benefiting from the Z -scheme heterostructure, the separation and migration efficiency of charge carriers in the g-C 3 N 4 /MoS 2 /AgI composite was greatly improved, which led to more effective production of predominant O 2 − and OH during the photocatalytic process. This work delivered an example of highly efficient composite photocatalyst and discussed the role of MoS 2 QDs as charge transfer mediator in Z -scheme photocatalytic system.

TiO 2 photocatalysis has gained attention as a cost-effective way of degrading contaminants. However, it relies on UV excitation and experiences rapid carrier recombination. To address these drawbacks, novel xylan-based carbon dots@hydrogenated TiO 2 (CDs@TiO 2-x ) composited by direct Z-scheme heterojunction is fabricated as a visible light-driven photocatalytic material, which broadens the range of light absorption to visible light and suppresses the recombination of photogenerated carriers. The spindle-shaped CDs@TiO 2-x has C/N/O/S groups, positive charges, and oxygen vacancies on its surface, and can degrade 89% of methylene blue and 87% of methyl orange within 90 min, and 99% of rhodamine B within 60 min in visible light. It also eradicates 99.9% of E. coli in 2 h and 97.1% of S. aureus in 2.5 h. These performances surpass CDs and TiO 2-x , and exhibit advantages in similar composite materials. The degradation pathways of dyes and the specific antibacterial processes induced by ROS are thoroughly investigated through LC-MS testing and related enzyme activity assays. DFT calculations study the role of oxygen vacancies, heterojunction mechanism, and catalytic sites. This study has developed a novel nanocomposite with applications in both dye degradation and sterilization, offering insights for multifunctional materials based on photocatalysis and heterojunction.

The purposeful modulation of interfacial charge transfer pathways in heterogeneous structures is an innovative and feasible strategy to improve photocatalysis efficiency. However, it is often characterized by difficulties in charge separation and transport and the high charge recombination limits its applications. Herein, a Cd 0.3 Zn 0.7 S-based heterostructure of Cd 0.3 Zn 0.7 S@Ti 3 C 2 /Ag/CeO 2 was fabricated in which the efficient electron transfer route was designed by synergistic action of Z-scheme and Schottky junction. Serial characterizations and Density-Functional Theory calculations identify the Schottky junction promoted the electrons in Cd 0.3 Zn 0.7 S to transfer to Ti 3 C 2 , whereas the Z-scheme heterojunction accelerated the electrons transfer from CeO 2 to Cd 0.3 Zn 0.7 S@Ti 3 C 2 with Ag acting as the electronic intermediary. Significantly, the optimized Cd 0.3 Zn 0.7 S@Ti 3 C 2 /Ag/CeO 2 exhibited stronger photocatalytic H 2 evolution of 16.3 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 with an apparent quantum efficiency of 29.8 % at 420 nm, which was 4.2 times higher than the pristine Cd 0.3 Zn 0.7 S material. This work offers valuable insights into realizing the desired charge transfer route through artificial heterointerface and a new possibility for applying Cd 1-x Zn x S materials in photocatalytic hydrogen production.
