8-methoxypsoralen (8-MOP) with ultraviolet A radiation therapy (PUVA) is the standard therapy for patients with psoriasis , despite the reported potential risks of 8-MOP-induced cholestatic liver injury in both humans and animals. Usually, patients with chronic cholestasis exhibit lower serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D (25(OH)D) levels. But those patients receiving PUVA for psoriasis showed an increase in serum 25(OH)D levels, probably highlighting that the vitamin D–vitamin D nuclear receptor (VD-VDR) axis play a protective role in 8-MOP-induced hepatotoxicity. The present study confirmed 8-MOP could increase serum 25(OH)D levels in conventional lighting and diet (CLD) and vitamin D deficient (VDD) Sprague-Dawley rats. Potential liver risks were also found in CLD and VDD rats after 8-MOP treatment. We proved that 8-MOP could be a potent ligand for VDR using molecular docking and luciferase report assay. Effect of 8-MOP on VDR subcellular distribution was determined using human liver cell line L02. We found 8-MOP could increase VDR protein expression in the nuclear and cytosol extracts and also total cell extracts in L02. siRNAs for VDR were used to determine the role of VDR in protecting 8-MOP-induced cholestasis and potential cellular mechanisms. The results showed 8-MOP could affect the CYP7A1 , SHP and MRP3 expression via VDR, and such effects could be reversed by knockdown of VDR expression, suggesting a vital role of VDR involved in 8-MOP-regulated bile acid synthesis and transportation. In conclusion, these results revealed activation of VD–VDR axis may play a beneficial role in 8-MOP-mediated regulation of bile acid synthesis and transportation.

The effects of feeding sequence of reactants on the properties of a MgAl layered double hydroxide (LDH) coating on Mg alloy are reported herein for the first time. Based on the X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra, MgAl-LDH coatings were successfully obtained with different feeding sequences. However, characterizations of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electrochemical methods show that the surface morphologies and corrosion resistance of the MgAl-LDH coatings are dependent upon the feeding sequence. Furthermore, the MgAl-LDH coatings were modified in an 8-quinolinol (8HQ) solution by a facile soaking measurement. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) maps and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) spectra demonstrate the effective adsorption of 8HQ layer on the MgAl-LDH primer. The high-resolution N 1s XPS spectra manifest the existence of chemisorption owing to formation of a complex chelate, (bis (8-hydroxyquinolinato) magnesium, Mg(HQ) 2 ), between 8HQ anions and dissolved Mg 2+ . The modified MgAl-LDH coatings, which are named as 8HQ@MgAl-LDH coatings in the body text, show significant enhancement in corrosion resistance and remains excellent corrosion protection even exposure to a NaCl aqueous solution for one month. The mechanism of corrosion inhibition for the 8HQ@MgAl-LDH coatings is proposed finally, which mainly includes the increase in water contact angles, Cl − and CO 3 2− anion-exchangeability, and redeposition of Mg(HQ) 2 precipitation. These findings of this study provide some valuable insights into the corrosion protection mechanism of the MgAl-LDH coatings and the designment of a highly corrosion resistant coating on Mg alloy and other lightweight alloys.

In this paper, a Zeolite Imidazole Framework-8 (ZIF-8), was investigated for the removal of a mixture of two common antibiotics, tetracycline (TC) and oxytetracycline hydrochloride (OTC). Batch experiments showed that 90.7% of TC and 82.5% of OTC were simultaneously removed using ZIF-8. The maximum adsorption capacities for TC and OTC were 303.0 and 312.5 mg g −1 , respectively. For both antibiotics’ adsorption followed pseudo-second-order kinetics and best fit the Langmuir adsorption model with R 2 of 0.963 and 0.981, for TC and OTC at 303 K, respectively. The relatively large specific surface area of ZIF-8 (1158.2 m 2 g -1 ) combined with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) indicated that both antibiotics were adsorbed on to the surface of ZIF-8. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy both indicated the presence of benzene ring structures, associated with both pollutants, on ZIF-8 after reaction; which confirmed adsorption was occurring. XPS also showed the presence of C O double bonds on the surface of ZIF-8 indicating the presence of antibiotics. The adsorption mechanism most likely involved π-π interactions between the conjugated groups in TC/OTC and the imidazole rings of ZIF-8.

Absorption and adsorption technology as widely used methods have been reported for carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) separation. In order to combine the advantages of absorption and adsorption methods, ionic liquids (ILs) as absorption function and zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) as adsorption function were integrated into a slurry to efficiently capture CO 2 by the absorption-adsorption method. In this study, two pyridinium-based ILs, [C 4 Py][NTf 2 ] and [C 4 Py][N(CN) 2 ] were synthesized, and mixed with different concentration of ZIF-8 to form hybrid slurries. CO 2 solubility in the different hybrid slurries at temperatures from 303.15 to 333.15 K was measured. The results indicated that CO 2 solubility increases significantly with increasing pressure and decreases with increasing temperature. Moreover, CO 2 solubility increases with the increase of ZIF-8 content, indicating that the addition of ZIF-8 into ILs can obviously enhance CO 2 solubility. CO 2 solubility in the ZIF-8/[C 4 Py][NTf 2 ] slurry increases by 24% compared with the corresponding pure IL at 303.15 K and 1.80 MPa. The absorption-adsorption mechanism was studied using FT-IR and NMR spectroscopy. It was demonstrated that CO 2 absorption and adsorption in the ZIF-8/ILs hybrid slurries is a physical process. Furthermore, the ZIF-8/[C 4 Py][NTf 2 ] slurry can also keep the stable absorption performance after five consecutive absorption and desorption cycles. Considering the excellent capacity, thermal stability and recyclability, the porous materials/ILs slurry will provide new insight to CO 2 capture compared with the conventional absorbents.

Homogenous selective assay of albumin (ALB) in clinical sera was tested with 1-anilinonaphthalene-8-sulphonate (ANS) as Förster-resonance-energy-transfer (FRET) acceptor of tryptophan residues and biosensor of ALB. Between the excitation at 280 and 350 nm, the ratio of the fluorescence at 470 nm of free ANS in ethanol was about 1.9 while that of the complexes of ALB and ANS was about 3.9, supporting FRET in complexes of ANS and ALB. ANS below 1.0 mM saturated one site of ALB with K d of about 0.13 μM in 20 mM sodium phosphate buffer at pH 7.0. For selective assay of ALB, 0.30 μM ANS was used to quantify fluorescence of the complexes at 470 nm under the excitation at 280 nm. ALB from 1.8 to 25 nM was quantified, whose lower limit was below 1% than that by bromocresol green assay while one-third than that by immunoturbidimetric assay. Globular proteins at comparable levels gave negligible signals. This new method showed reasonable resistance to other interfering substances in clinical sera. Quantities of ALB in clinical sera by this method were consistent with those by bromocresol green assay and immunoturbidimetric assay. Hence, homogenous assay of ALB with ANS as FRET biosensor was effective.

Cancer vaccines, a critical technology in cancer immunotherapy, have shown great therapeutic potential. However, traditional vaccines based on tumor cell lysates (TCLs) have shown disappointing results in early clinical trials due to low immunogenicity, in vivo instability, and the inability to codeliver with adjuvants. To address these issues, we developed a nanoparticle vaccine, R848-GA@TCLs, by modifying the toll-like receptor 7/8 (TLR7/8) agonist R848 with gallic acid. This nanovaccine leverages the “capturing” ability of the galloyl moiety to coload TCLs and R848, forming stable nanoparticles. R848-GA@TCLs efficiently target lymph nodes, increasing TCL accumulation 10-fold, and enable the synchronized release of antigens and adjuvants within dendritic cells (DCs). Our results show that R848-GA@TCLs increase with respect to the cross-presentation of tumor antigens, promote the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, and activate DCs, leading to a significant increase in effector T cells, natural killer (NK) cells, and M1 macrophages. This strong immune response resulted in potent antitumor effects, with R848-GA@TCLs demonstrating efficacy in multiple tumor models by significantly inhibiting tumor growth and metastasis. In conclusion, R848-GA@TCLs represent a personalized cancer vaccine capable of codelivering TCLs and adjuvants, eliciting robust antitumor immune responses, and hold great potential for clinical applications.

The influencing factors of ZIF-8 synthesis were systematically investigated by the green synthesis method and the samples were also compared with ZIF-8 synthesized in other ways, and an optimal synthesis route was found by exploring the synthesis conditions. On this basis, the synthesis mechanism of ZIF-8 was analyzed. The research results show that the key influencing factors in the reaction process are the amount of NaOH and the pH value of the system. Different amounts of NaOH will produce different intermediates, and these intermediates further affect the pH value of the entire reaction system. The pH value of the system plays a decisive role in the deprotonation process of the ligand in the reaction, and this process is the key to whether the ZIF-8 structure can be formed. It is worth mentioning that the ZIF - 8 synthesized in this study demonstrates varying removal performances for different dyes under different conditions. Under specific conditions, it exhibits the maximum removal rate for Rhodamine B (RhB), reaching 99.97 %. This excellent removal performance is closely associated with the pore - structure characteristics of the synthesized material, which fully indicates that the ZIF - 8 synthesized through the green route has certain application potential and promising application prospects in related fields.

In this investigation, a hydrogel adsorbent featuring remarkable efficiency in dye adsorption was successfully synthesized by the integration of natural polysaccharide (pullulan) and nanoparticles (ZIF-8@PDA). The prepared natural polysaccharide nanocomposite hydrogels not only exhibit superior mechanical strength and biocompatibility, but also demonstrate adeptness in the removal of dye pollutants. The dye removal capacities were 615.4 mg/g for malachite green (MG) and 525.8 mg/g for Congo red (CR), respectively. Notably, the adsorption process exhibits minimal susceptibility to variations in water quality and the presence of co-existing ions. The pH-responsive surface charge conversion capability of the adsorbent renders it recyclable, maintaining a dye adsorption performance exceeding 88 % even after 5 cycles of repeated usage. Overall, these environmentally friendly natural polysaccharide nanocomposite hydrogels hold potential for addressing complex wastewater treatment challenges and long-term use.

A Michelson interference dimethyl methyl phosphate (DMMP) fiber sensor with a single-mode (SMF)-dislocated single-mode (DSMF)-hollow-core fiber (HCF) structure is proposed. To fabricate the Michelson interference structure of SMF-DSMF-HCF, one end of the DSMF was misaligned and fused to the SMF, the other end was fused to the HCF to generate a reflective surface. The structure, elemental composition, and surface morphology of ZIF-8@Ag were analyzed using X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy after the ZIF-8@Ag/PDDA composite was coated on the surface of DSMF. The result shows that the sensitivity and the detection limit of the sensor are 45.71 dB/ppm and 0.1431 ppb, respectively, and the response/recovery time is around 14/12 s. The sensor also has excellent selectivity and stability.

Aiming to meet the demand for rapid detection of chlorpyrifos (CPS), a surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensor based on a gluten/zein electrospun film (GZEF) was fabricated via electrospraying. The SERS performance was namely improved through metal nanoparticles selection and optimization of loading amounts. Further construction of the AANS@ZIF-8@GZEF sensor was achieved through in-situ growth. Owning to the porous structure of ZIF-8, the trapping ability and enrichment effect of the SERS sensor were enhanced, resulting in a superior SERS enhancement effect of 1.58 times. Moreover, the CPS detection under various concentrations was carried out using the AANS@ZIF-8@GZEF sensor. The concentration-logarithm peak intensity equations were fitted, and the limit of detection (LOD) of CPS was calculated to be 0.981 μg/L. Finally, the detection of CPS residues on the peel of apples was performed using the AANS@ZIF-8@GZEF sensor, and the results showed that the overall recovery rate ranged between 91.18% and 96.83%, with all relative standard deviations being less than 5%. Great potential applications in the rapid and sensitive detection of chlorpyrifos in food are expected for the AANS@ZIF-8@GZEF sensor constructed in this study.

The wide use of antibiotics can lead to antimicrobial resistance. Biosurfactant rhamnolipids are not prone to induce antimicrobial resistance due to their potential to target microbial membranes in both bacteria and fungi. However, the membrane interaction of anionic rhamnolipids with microbials has never been visually observed. This study applied previously synthesized anionic fluorescent Trisodium 8-hydroxypyrene-1,3,6-trisulfonate (HPTS)-based surfactants, with hydrophobic tails from C8 to C18, to examine their interaction with the plant pathogen Alternaria alternata . The antifungal potency of the surfactants exhibited a positive correlation with the increase in hydrophobic chain length, culminating in C16, which demonstrated the highest activity. Subsequently, a modest reduction in potency was noted for the C18. Fluorescence microscopy confirmed the membrane targeting of HPTS-C16, and molecular dynamics simulations supported its specific membrane interaction. HPTS-C16 was notably more effective against spores than mycelium, consistent with its binding affinity. This research provides a fluorescent method to dissect the relationship between surfactant properties and microbial membrane characteristics, guiding the development of antimicrobials to combat resistance.

For the serious situation of heavy metal pollution, the use of cheap, clean, and efficient biochar to immobilize heavy metals is a good treatment method. In this paper, SA@ZIF-8/BC was prepared for the adsorption of Pb 2+ in solution using sodium alginate (SA) and zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) modified corn cob biochar. The results showed that the specific surface area of modified biochar was greatly improved, with good adsorption capacity for Pb 2+ , strong anti-interference ability, and good economy. At the optimal adsorption pH of 5, the adsorption model of Pb 2+ by SA@ZIF-8/BC was more consistent with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model. This indicates that the adsorption of Pb 2+ by SA@ZIF-8/BC is chemisorption and monolayer adsorption. The maximum adsorption of modified biochar was 300 mg g −1 , which was 2.38 times higher than that of before modified BC (126 mg g −1 ). The shift in binding energy of functional groups before and after adsorption of SA@ZIF-8/BC was studied by XPS, and it was found that hydroxyl and carboxyl groups played an important role in the adsorption of Pb 2+ . It was demonstrated that this novel adsorbent can be effectively used for the treatment of Pb pollution in wastewater.
