Photocatalytic technology is a unique method of treating energy crisis and environmental concern. Herein, Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were employed to prepare a series of visible light responsive MoS 2 /CdS heterojunction photocatalysts by facile low-temperature hydrothermal sulfurization . The structural analysis revealed that the prepared MoS 2 /CdS heterojunction exhibited highly porous structure and the intimate interface was formed between the MoS 2 and CdS. For these structure features, the charge separation and transfer were significantly improved, and the MoS 2 /CdS heterojunction presented efficient photocatalytic activity towards hydrogen evolution and degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) and tetracycline hydrochloride (TC). The highest H 2 evolution rate (3318 μmol h −1 g −1 ) was found at the 5 wt%-MoS 2 /CdS, which were 10 times and 6 times of pristine MoS 2 and CdS, respectively. In particular, the 5 wt%-MoS 2 /CdS can also remove 95% RhB and 90% TC within 40 min. Moreover, the MoS 2 /CdS heterojunction showed good photocatalytic stability for hydrogen evolution and degradation of RhB and TC. Furthermore, the radical trapping experiment revealed that the photogenerated · O 2 − played critical role in RhB degradation and the hole (h + ) and · O 2 − were essential for TC degradation. The work will provide a guidance for rational design and facile preparation of photocatalyst for the visible light-driven hydrogen evolution and elimination of organic pollutants.

Promoting photo-induced electron transfer is one of the most efficient approaches for improving photocatalytic hydrogen production performance. Herein, we construct a novel interfacial lateral electron migration path by introducing CoP 2 into CdS photocatalytic system as cocatalyst for the first time. This peculiar migration path can be attributed to two aspects: 1) the built-in electric field between CoP 2 and CdS could drive carrier separation effectively; 2) the “metallized” interface serves as a special electron trap to accumulate electrons and promote them transfer along it instead of diffusion into cocatalyst. The energy-efficient interface shortens the electron migration distance and make more hot electrons participate in the reaction at the active sites with lower activation energy. As expected, the optimal hydrogen production rate of CoP 2 /CdS reaches up to 1071 mmol h −1 g −1 , which is one of the most robust photocatalytic hydrogen production systems.

Chains of alternating semiconductor nanocrystals are complex nanostructures that can offer control over photogenerated charge carriers dynamics and quantized electronic states. We develop a simple one-pot colloidal synthesis of complex Cu1.94S-CdS and Cu1.94S-ZnS nanochains exploiting an equilibrium driving ion exchange mechanism. The chain length of the heterostructures can be tuned using a concentration dependent cation exchange mechanism controlled by the precursor concentrations, which enables the synthesis of monodisperse and uniform Cu1.94S-CdS-Cu1.94S nanochains featuring three epitaxial junctions. These seamless junctions enable efficient separation of photogenerated charge carriers, which can be harvested for photocatalytic applications. We demonstrate the superior photocatalytic activity of these noble metal free materials through solar hydrogen generation at a hydrogen evolution rate of 22.01 mmol g–1 h–1, which is 1.5-fold that of Pt/CdS heterostructure photocatalyst particles.

Preparation of high-performance composites photocatalysts for organic pollutants degradation is of great significance. In this work, elemental doping was employed to realize the visible-light harvesting and visible-light photocatalysis of the (Al,C)-Ta 2 O 5 mesocrystals following by introduction of CdS quantum dots (QDs) into layered and poriferous (Al,C)-Ta 2 O 5 nanosheets for fabrication of S-scheme charge transfer pathways. In this work, the higher temperatures treatment induced the successful transformation of (Al,C)-Ta 2 O 5 nanosheets from Ta 3 AlC 4 MAX. The experimental results also revealed that CdS QDs/(Al,C)-Ta 2 O 5 composites showed highly enhanced visible-light absorption and visible-light photocatalytic tetracycline degradation performance. The optimal photocatalytic reaction rate constant of the CdS QDs/(Al,C)-Ta 2 O 5 -30% composite reached as high as 0.1117 min −1 , which was approximately 27.24 times of the (Al,C)-Ta 2 O 5 nanosheets and 2.43 times of CdS QDs , far better than those of commercial Ta 2 O 5 and pristine Ta 3 AlC 4 . Meanwhile, the prepared CdS QDs/(Al,C)-Ta 2 O 5 composites were also employed for efficient photodegradation of norfloxacin. Besides, the effects of various experimental parameters, reactive species determination, and band structures were also investigated. The improved visible-light photocatalytic performance of the CdS QDs/(Al,C)-Ta 2 O 5 composites was mainly attributed to fabrication of S-scheme charge transfer pathways for efficient charge separation.

Cleaner production processes in conjunction with sustainability is the main requirement for clean and cost-effective industrial process. Moreover, the rapid growth of the world population in conjunction with limited sources of drinking water anticipated water crisis in many countries. Herein, indirect Z-scheme ZnO-3%SrO-2CdS photocatalyst was fabricated for the first time via thermal treatment and well identified by XRD, FT-IR, SEM, EDX and, XPS, meanwhile, the optical properties were evaluated using DRS, PL, and EPR analyses. The photocatalytic activity of noble metal free ZnO-3%SrO-2CdS was investigated in the photodegradation of six antibiotics, namely tetracycline, doxycycline, ofloxacin, amoxicillin, cephalexin, and sulfamethoxazole. Furthermore, kinetic study, pH, initial concentration, dosage, mass ratio, photoreactor type and different water source parameters have been investigated. Results demonstrated a high removal efficiency of tetracycline by ZnO-3%SrO-2CdS of 98.8% within 120 min at pH 7 and dosage 10 mg. This high efficiency could be attributed to SrO channels that facilitate charge migration process and conserve electrons/holes with high redox power for reactive oxygen species production. Besides, the hydroponics study to examine the phytotoxicity of treated tetracycline solution reflected the effectiveness of the treating process since T. foenum-graecum seeds were germinated successfully in the treated tetracycline solution.

Efficient light harvesting was observed over CdS photodeposited on In2O3 photonic crystals during the photocatalytic hydrogenation of 4-nitroaniline to p-phenylenediamine. The highest conversion of 4-nitroaniline and selectivity of p-phenylenediamine over the In2O3 photonic crystal supported CdS were ∼93% and ∼99%, respectively, which were better than that achieved for commercial hexagonal CdS. The existence of the photonic crystal structure was responsible for the higher efficiency of In2O3 photonic crystal supported CdS. The ordered structure facilitated the mass transport. The elaborate tuning of the photonic band gap activated the slow photon enhancement effect on the blue edge for intensifying the light harvesting efficiency of CdS. Moreover, CdS supported on In2O3 photonic crystals exhibited higher photocatalytic stability than that on the In2O3 nanocrystals. The mechanism of photocatalytic hydrogenation over In2O3 photonic crystal supported CdS was discussed. Our results provided guidance for efficiently utilizing light for photocatalysis by applying photonic crystals as support.

Ternary CdS-MoS 2 coated ZnO nanobrush photoelectrode from chemical bath deposition was successfully fabricated on a FTO substrate for photocatalytic degradation of amoxicillin. The vertically grown ZnO core on FTO substrates provided a direct pathway for electron transfer; while the well-crystallized CdS/MoS 2 shell offered effective visible light absorption and increased active sites. Prolonged lifetime of charge carriers was demonstrated by transient photovoltage (TPV) measurement. The ternary brush-type electrode exhibited enhanced photoelectrochemical performance with a photocurrent density of 20.32 mA/cm 2 at 0 V vs . Ag/AgCl under visible light illumination (λ ≧ 420 nm), which was 5.2 times, 1.8 times and 3.6 times of that of pristine CdS, CdS-MoS 2 film and ZnO/CdS nanobrush, respectively. The improved photoelectrochemical activity was ascribed to the enhancement of light absorption, appropriate band alignment and prolonged charge carriers’ lifetime. The ZnO/CdS-MoS 2 nanobrush film degraded 94% of amoxicillin in 60 min, exhibiting promising photocatalytic activity under visible light illumination (λ ≧ 420 nm). The reusability and stability of the electrode were evaluated by recycling experiments. The intermediates of amoxicillin oxidation were also identified and the degradation pathway was proposed.

A novel electrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensor was constructed for the detection of permethrin by modifying Fe 3 CuO 4 –Ru(bpy) 3 2+ and GO-CdS@ZnS on the electrode. Fe 3 CuO 4 was used as a carrier to adsorb more luminous reagent Ru(bpy) 3 2+ to promote luminescence. Meanwhile, it also can be used as a co-reaction promoter to amplify the initial signal of Ru(bpy) 3 2+ -tri-n-propylamine (TPrA) system. When GO-CdS@ZnS was introduced into this system, the ECL signal was further enhanced. The porous nature of graphene oxide (GO) was utilized to load a large amount of CdS@ZnS, in which CdS@ZnS acted as the co-reactant to amplify the ECL signal. The amount of permethrin (PMT) increased and the ECL signal decreased. Under the optimum conditions, the ECL response was linearly related to the logarithm of PMT concentration. The developed ECL sensor allowed for sensitive determination of PMT and exhibited a wide linear range from 1.0 × 10 −11 mol L −1 to 1.0 × 10 −7 mol L −1 . The limit of detection was 3.3 × 10 −12 mol L −1 (S/N = 3). It can be used for the detection of PMT in vegetable samples.

In the present work, a ternary composite MoS2/soluble g-C3N4/CdS was synthesized using a facile one-pot hydrothermal reaction and conventional reflux reaction method. The composition, morphology, and properties of the ternary composite were characterized. The photocatalytic performance of the ternary composite was evaluated for hydrogen generation under LED lamp irradiation (450 nm < λ < 465 nm) with lactic acid (LA) used as a sacrificial reagent. The results demonstrated that the maximum hydrogen production reached 4869.6 μmol under the optimal hydrogen production conditions, including a composition of 20% soluble g-C3N4, 9% MoS2, a solution pH of 1, and an irradiation time of 6 hours. The corresponding hydrogen production rate for the ternary composite was calculated to be 8116 μmol g−1 h−1. Furthermore, a possible electron transfer mechanism of the ternary composite system was briefly explored. The interaction and synergistic effects between MoS2, soluble g-C3N4, and CdS in the ternary composite likely facilitate efficient electron transfer, resulting in enhanced photocatalytic activity for hydrogen production. Mechanistic research showed that the electron transfer pathway represented either a double or single type II heterojunction photocatalytic system.

Adequate separation of photogenerated carriers plays an important role in the photocatalytic degradation of pollutants. Here, a noble-free spatially separated photocatalyst rGO-CdS-MnO x (GCM) has been designed for removing environmental pollutants efficiently. rGO and MnO x are employed as the collectors of photoinduced electrons and holes, respectively. Under light irradiation, the electrons and holes motivated by CdS can directionally transfer to the rGO and MnO x , leading to the exposure of both reduction and oxidation surfaces, thereby enhancing the photocatalytic activity. Our results demonstrated that GCM-30 can remove 86.56 % of carbamazepine and 95.83 % of tetracycline hydrochloride within 30 min and 15 min, respectively, and 95.49 % of Cr (VI) within 21 min. Our work demonstrates that this dual functional photocatalyst may provide new strategies for the spatially separated photocatalysts for removing environmental pollutants.

A novel photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor based on “Z-scheme” TiO 2 @Au@CdS and molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) was developed for the non-invasive detection of uric acid (UA). The “Z-scheme” material, consisting of an electron-transfer system (Au) and two isolated photochemical systems (CdS, TiO 2 ), was synthesized by chemical deposition method and it worked as a substrate for electro-polymerization of MIP. Due to the high photoelectric conversion efficiency provided by TiO 2 @Au@CdS and specific imprinting effect afforded by MIP, the sensor displayed desirable sensing performance with the merits of sensitivity, selectivity, repeatability, and stability. The linear range for UA detection is from 1 nM to 9 μM with the detection limit of 0.3 nM (S/ N = 3). Moreover, the assay was successfully utilized to measure UA in human tears and offered a reliable result. The incorporation of MIP and “Z-scheme” material into a PEC sensor system is expected to provide a promising strategy for detecting other small molecules. Graphical abstract

Recently, nanoluminophores with the potential-resolved multicolor electrochemiluminescence (PRMCECL) property have emerged and shown promising applications in sensitive, selective, and accurate bioassays, bioimaging, and multicolor emitting devices. However, only limited PRMCECL nanoluminophores and their applications in ratiometric biosensors eliminating proportional errors have been reported. Herein, a novel PRMCECL nanoluminophore was synthesized by encapsulating CdS quantum dots (CdSQDs) into MOF-5 (CdSQDs@MOF-5). Using K2S2O8 as a coreactant, two electrochemiluminescence (ECL) peaks, ECL-1 centered at 685 nm and ECL-2 centered at 475 nm, were observed at −1.4 and −1.8 V, respectively. Related ECL mechanisms have been proposed. Based on the potential-resolved ECL signals, a label-free differential ECL immunosensor for the determination of cardiac troponin I (cTnI) was established by assembly of poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride), CdSQDs@MOF-5, and cTnI antibody-functionalized silver nanoparticles on the surface of the fluorine-doped tin oxide electrode subsequently. In the presence of cTnI, cTnI was captured by the sensing interface, leading to an increase in ECL-1 and ECL-2 intensity. cTnI could be determined in the range of 0.01–1000 pg/mL with a detection limit of 5.01 fg/mL using the intensity difference between ECL-1 and ECL-2. This work provides a new family member of PRMCECL nanoluminophores. The proposed label-free differential ECL immunosensor provides a new strategy based on potential-resolved ECL signals, which could effectively eliminate the additive error and show better sensitivity, selectivity, and accuracy for the detection of cTnI than the single-signal strategy and ratiometric strategy.
