Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-Coated Vanadium-Doped MnO2 Nanorods for High-Performance Flexible Aqueous Zinc-Ion Battery Cathode

Yuning Sun,Changjun Huang,Yuexin Liu,Xiaoli Zhao,Kefeng Cai

Manganese-based aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) are considered promising cathode materials for large-scale energy storage applications due to their low cost and high safety. However, the primary constraints on achieving high specific capacity and cycling stability are the inherent low conductivity and suboptimal structural stability of the AZIB cathodes. Herein, we report a high-performance poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT)-coated vanadium-doped MnO2 nanorod (NR) electrode for AZIBs. First, vanadium-doped MnO2 (V-MnO2) NRs were synthesized by a simple hydrothermal synthesis method. The V-MnO2 NRs were further encapsulated with a nanolayer of PEDOT through an in situ polymerization process, which was subsequently treated with sulfuric acid to achieve a smooth surface. The V doping creates oxygen vacancies within the MnO2, allowing for the rapid embedding and diffusion of Zn2+. The PEDOT nanolayer greatly enhances the conductivity and structural stability of the V-MnO2. Benefiting from the unique features, an optimal composite NRs electrode exhibits a high specific capacity of 250 mAh g–1 at 0.4 A g–1, a high energy density (388 Wh kg–1 at 151 W kg–1), and excellent stability over 5000 cycles at 3 A g–1. In addition, the flexible pouch cell assembled with the electrode shows good stability under bending. Given the positive outcomes, the material holds great potential for use as a cathode in next-generation flexible energy storage systems.

Ion-exchange induced Ni doping of α-MnO2 cathode with structural modification for aqueous zinc ion batteries

Xiaodong Liang,Xin Liu,Peixiong Wang,Zhongxian Guo,Xin Chen,Jia Yao,Jingying Li,Yi Gan,Lin Lv,Li Tao,Hanbin Wang,Houzhao Wan,Jun Zhang,Hao Wang

Manganese-based cathode materials for zinc-ion batteries provide a moderate voltage window and good specific capacity. However, the disproportionation reactions cause manganese to dissolve during the charge and discharge process, seriously affecting its cycle stability. Herein, nickel-doped α phase manganese dioxide (Ni-MnO 2 ) obtained by ion exchange effectively improves the lattice stability and cycle stability of manganese dioxide (MnO 2 ). The introduction of Ni 2+ supports the lattice structure of MnO 2 , reduces structural damage and manganese (Mn) dissolution caused by the Jahn-Teller effect during the cycle, and improves its electronic conduction and ion migration capabilities. It quickly completes the activation process at a current density of 0.1 A g −1 and stably maintains a capacity of 233 mAh g −1 . After 2800 cycles at 1 A g −1 , the capacity retention rate remains 96.3 %. In contrast, MnO 2 without ion exchange modification has dropped to 19.6 % after 130 cycles. This paper demonstrates the feasibility of the ion exchange process, bringing more precise and effective ideas to the research and development of high-performance aqueous zinc-manganese batteries.

Self-heating photothermal synergy in MnO2-catalyzed n-propylamine oxidation: From photothermal activation to degradation pathway elucidation

Wenxuan Xu,Shouzhi Chen,Rui Tian,Tao Yu,Junqiang Wang,Wenjing Wang,Fuzhi Guo,Fei He,Shaopeng Rong

n-Propylamine, a toxic nitrogen-containing volatile organic compound (NVOC), poses health and environmental risks alongside intense odours. Its photothermal catalytic oxidation is effective, but the synergy between photocatalysis and thermocatalysis remains unclear. This study compared five MnO 2 catalysts with different tunnel structures (α, β, γ, δ, τ) for ambient-temperature self-heating photothermal oxidation of n-propylamine. Remarkable crystal phase-dependent catalytic performance was observed, with α-MnO 2 exhibiting superior activity achieving 93.6% CO 2 yield and, notably, 100% N 2 selectivity without detectable NO x emissions. Mechanistic studies reveal a photothermal coupled catalysis mechanism: light-induced excitation weakens Mn–O bonds and activates lattice oxygen, while the photothermal effect simultaneously promotes charge transfer and drives thermocatalytic decomposition.   Furthermore, in-situ DRIFTS combined with mass spectrometry and ion chromatography elucidated a bifurcated degradation pathway: C–N bond cleavage yielding propyl radicals (undergoing stepwise oxidation to CO 2 via alcohols, aldehydes, and carboxylic acids) and amino radicals (selectively converted to N 2 via photo-iSCR or NH 3 -SCO mechanisms); concurrently, a dehydrogenation route produces propionitrile as a transient intermediate that eventually feeds into the main oxidation cascade. This work provides fundamental insights into the crystal structure-dependent photothermal catalytic performance and establishes a comprehensive mechanistic framework for n-propylamine oxidation, offering rational guidelines for designing high-performance catalysts for NVOC abatement.

A ROS-responsive degradable hydrogel integrating MnO2 nanoparticles and gemcitabine for synergistic chemodynamic-chemotherapy of breast cancer

Pingan Li,Xiaodan Chen,Jingyang Su,Qin Zhang,Lin Lin

A ROS-responsive degradable hydrogel is developed for localized breast cancer therapy. • The hydrogel integrates MnO 2 -mediated chemodynamic therapy with gemcitabine chemotherapy. • Tumor microenvironment-triggered ROS generation accelerates hydrogel degradation and drug release. • The self-amplifying therapeutic cascade enhances antitumour efficacy with favourable biosafety. Breast cancer therapy remains limited by systemic side effects, intratumoral drug accumulation and tumor recurrence, highlighting the need for effective localized treatment strategies. Herein, we develop a reactive oxygen species (ROS)-responsive degradable hydrogel for localized chemodynamic-chemotherapeutic breast cancer therapy. Bovine serum albumin-templated MnO 2 (BM) nanoparticles and gemcitabine (Gem) are incorporated into a thiol-norbornene photocrosslinked polyethylene glycol (PEG) network containing ROS-cleavable thioketal (TK) linkers. Such a hydrogel serves not only as a local drug depot, but also a tumor microenvironment-activated therapeutic system. Within this microenvironment, MnO 2 consumes endogenous glutathione (GSH) and reacts with hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) to generate Mn 2+ and hydroxyl radicals (·OH), inducing oxidative damage and perturbing tumour redox homeostasis. The resulting ROS further cleave TK linkers, accelerating hydrogel degradation and Gem release. This self-amplifying feedback couples chemodynamic therapy with chemotherapy, enabling localized, stimuli-responsive drug delivery and enhanced antitumour efficacy. In vitro and in vivo evaluations confirm significant tumor suppression and favourable biosafety. These findings highlight a microenvironment-responsive hydrogel platform for regional combination therapy of breast cancer. Regulating Oxygen Vacancies in Ultrasonic-Assisted Green-Synthesized Copper-Doped δ-MnO2 Catalysts for Boosting Formaldehyde Oxidation

Xiudan Tao,Xiaohan Yang,Fufen Li,Yuqing He,Chenhui Liu,Zhengjun Li,Nianhua Dan

Oxygen vacancies play a crucial role in modulating the chemical and catalytic properties of metal oxide catalysts. Herein, quercetin was used as a green reducing agent to prepare Cu-doped MnO2(Cu-MnO2) composite catalysts with varying Cu doping levels via an ultrasonically assisted strategy. The structure-activity relationships were systematically investigated using XRD, Raman, XPS, H2-TPR, and O2-TPD. Benefiting from optimized surface lattice defects induced by an appropriate Cu doping level, the Cu-MnO2-2 sample, which exhibited the highest oxygen vacancy concentration, achieved a HCHO removal efficiency of 99.2% for 1 ppm HCHO at room temperature (25 °C) and 50% relative humidity within 30 min. The enrichment of Mn3+, Cu+, and surface-adsorbed oxygen species (Oads) further corroborated the increased oxygen vacancy density, indicating that moderate Cu doping effectively promotes electron transfer and oxygen activation. After five consecutive cycles, the HCHO conversion remained above 96%. Post-cycling characterizations (XRD, FTIR, EDS, and XPS) confirmed the excellent structural and chemical stability of the catalyst, with the Mn3+proportion and Cu+/Cu2+ratio well preserved. In situ DRIFTS analysis revealed that surface-adsorbed oxygen and oxygen-vacancy-activated reactive oxygen species (ROS) are key factors in the efficient HCHO oxidation over the green Cu-MnO2-2 catalyst, promoting rapid conversion of intermediates and ultimately generating CO2and H2O. This study provides a facile, low-cost, and green synthesis strategy for Cu-MnO2composite catalysts for indoor, room-temperature HCHO abatement, offering new insights into the design of other composite catalyst materials.

Synergistic effect of carbon and MnO2 coated Na3V2(PO4)2F3 cathode for high-performance sodium-ion batteries

Jiaqi Pan,Shaokang Guo,Xingyu Ni,Xutong Sun,Wenhao Yue,Yongchen Kong,Yonghui Ma,Chunliang Zhou,Junnan Liu

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are considered a promising alternative to lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to their abundant resources and low cost. However, the relatively large radius and mass of sodium ions can lead to structural degradation and volume changes in the electrode materials during charging and discharging processes, which limits their practical applications. In this paper, we successfully prepared carbon and MnO 2 co-coated Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 2 F 3 (NVPF/C@ M-x, x = 0, 1, 3, 5 wt%) cathode materials using sol-gel method and suspension coating method. We systematically studied the physical and chemical effects of the MnO 2 coating, as well as the electrochemical performance of the materials. The results demonstrate that an optimal MnO₂ coating (1 wt%) forms a uniform interfacial layer, which not only suppresses Na + dissolution and side reactions but also enhances electronic conductivity and structural stability. NVPF/C@M-1 exhibits a reversible specific capacity of 129.09 mAh g −1 at 0.1C and maintains a capacity of 59.44 mAh g −1 at 10C. Furthermore, after 300 cycles at 1C and 500 cycles at 5C, the capacity retention rates are 85.96% and 89.34%, respectively. Kinetic analysis reveals that the MnO 2 coating significantly reduces the charge transfer resistance (R ct ) and increases the sodium ion diffusion coefficient (D Na+ ), thereby optimizing the rate performance and cycling stability of the materials. Additionally, the MnO 2 and C co-coating structure significantly improves the low-temperature performance, with the NVPF/C@M-1 electrode maintaining 90.43% capacity retention even at −30 °C, far superior to the uncoated sample's 64.13%. The NVPF/C@M-1 cathode demonstrates significantly enhanced overall performance in sodium-ion full-cell tests. It delivers an initial discharge capacity of 107.78 mAh g −1 at 1C, maintains a capacity retention rate of 95.07% after 100 cycles, and retains a discharge capacity of 81.63 mAh g −1 even at the high rate of 5C. This study provides an effective strategy for developing high-performance cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries.

Porous organic polymer-mediated oxygen-vacancy-rich MnO2-x/Cu2O composite enhances photocatalytic conversion of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural

Jiaqi Li,Dongfeng He,Ruize Zhang,Binbin Tan,Jiang Wang,Jing Wang,Junrong Chen,Hui Wang,Wenlei Wang

5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) serves as a key platform molecule for green photocatalytic oxidation to produce high-value-added chemicals. Addressing the critical need for efficient photocatalytic conversion of HMF to 2,5-furan dicarboxylic acid (FDCA) under mild conditions, this study proposes and constructs a synergistic ternary composite photocatalytic system. By incorporating porous organic polymers (POPs) into oxygen-vacancy-rich MnO 2-x /Cu 2 O, the MnO 2-x @POPs@Cu 2 O composite photocatalyst was synthesized. This composite catalyst demonstrated remarkable photocatalytic performance under ambient conditions, achieving 71.8% conversion of HMF and 18.5% yield of FDCA. Results indicate that POPs not only selectively enrich reactants by forming dynamic imine bonds with HMF via its surface (–NH 2 ) functional groups, but also significantly enhance interfacial charge separation and transport through a locally embedded electric field generated by its highly negatively charged triazine framework, thereby accelerating the Mn-Cu bimetallic redox cycle. Furthermore, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirmed that introducing POPs effectively reduces O 2 adsorption energy, promotes molecular oxygen activation, and enhances reactive oxygen species generation. This study provides a novel strategy for designing low-cost, high-efficiency multicomponent photocatalysts for biomass refining.

One-step hydrothermal synthesis of Nb5+-doped α-MnO2 nanoparticle for high-performance asymmetric supercapacitor electrode material

Wang Yongyuan,Li Xuyin,Xu Chaoyong,Cao Jianchun

Expanding the stable voltage window and specific capacitance of supercapacitor electrode materials remains a key scientific challenge due to the low energy density of supercapacitors. In this study, starting from the problem of low specific capacitance caused by the limited electron transfer rate due to the low conductivity of MnO 2 , a simple and economical hydrothermal method was used to doping different contents of Nb 5+ ions, which replaced some Mn 4+ ions in the α-MnO 2 lattice, thereby causing certain changes in the charge density and band structure of α-MnO 2 , and effectively improving its conductivity. In addition, Nb 5+ -doped α-MnO 2 effectively alters its morphology and surface area, providing a large surface area for ion and electron transport. The optimized Nb-MnO 2 electrode has a voltage window widened from 0.8 V to 1.2 V in a 1 M Na 2 SO 4 electrolyte, with a specific capacitance of 587 F/g with in the 1.2 V wide voltage window, while the undoped MnO 2 has a specific capacitance of only 131 F/g. A 2 V asymmetric supercapacitor is constructed with activated carbon AC as the negative electrode, providing a high energy density of 57 Wh/kg at a power density of 1010 W/kg in a 3 M KOH electrolyte. In addition, at a current density of 5 A/g, the capacitance retention rate of 84.85% was maintained after 5000 charge–discharge cycles. This work is a valuable foundation for the future exploration of wide voltage window and high-performance aqueous electrolyte asymmetric supercapacitors.

Synergistic adsorption and Z-Scheme charge transfer in MnO2/BiOBr heterojunctions for enhanced photocatalytic removal of antibiotics

Li Li,Mengru Wang,Wenjing Zhang,Xueli zhang,Han Li,Runqiang Liu,Chao Liu,Xingyun Hu

The removal of antibiotics from water remains a challenge, where adsorption as a pre-concentration step is crucial for subsequent photocatalytic degradation. Herein, we propose a synergistic strategy by constructing a heterojunction between the strong adsorbent MnO 2 and the photocatalyst BiOBr. A series of MnO 2 /BiOBr composites were synthesized via an in-situ redox method under an ice bath. The optimal 1% MnO 2 /BiOBr composite exhibited remarkably enhanced simultaneous adsorption and photocatalytic degradation efficiency towards ciprofloxacin (CIP), norfloxacin (NOR), and tetracycline (TC) under simulated sunlight, significantly outperforming pristine BiOBr and MnO 2 . Comprehensive characterizations confirmed the successful formation of an intimate heterojunction. Mechanistic studies, including active trapping species and electron spin resonance (ESR) analysis, revealed that the superoxide radical (•O 2 - ) and hydroxyl radical (•OH) were the dominant reactive species. The band structure alignment and charge transfer analysis supported a direct Z-scheme mechanism, which effectively promotes the separation of photogenerated carriers while preserving high redox potentials. Furthermore, the effects of operational parameters (catalyst dosage, initial concentration, pH), inorganic anions, and natural organic matter (NOM) on CIP removal were systematically investigated, demonstrating good practicality. The degradation pathways of CIP were elucidated via LC-MS analysis, and toxicity assessment using T.E.S.T. software indicated a general reduction in the ecotoxicity of the intermediates. This work highlights MnO 2 as a multifunctional modifier and provides a feasible approach for designing efficient adsorbent-photocatalyst hybrids for antibiotic wastewater remediation.

Insights into the mechanism of enhanced peroxymonosulfate activation for norfloxacin degradation by Co doping into MnO2 nanosheet

Jiankang Wang,Chenguang Wang,Yanhong Zhou,Yajing Wang,Qinqin Zhang,Quanxi Zhu,Peng Zhang,Zhongping Yao

Co doped MnO 2 nanosheets with oxygen vacancies were hydrothermally prepared. • Co doped MnO 2 enabled 98.2 % NOX removal and 56.4 % TOC mineralization. • Co doping promoted PMS adsorption on catalyst and interfacial electron transfer. • SO 4 • – and 1 O 2 dominated NOX degradation in Co doped MnO 2 /PMS. • Three degradation pathways were proposed and ecotoxicity of intermediates was declined. The slow electron transfer rate, insufficient active sites and sluggish Mn(Ⅳ)/Mn(Ⅲ) redox cycling of MnO 2 in peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation severely hinder its application in wastewater treatment. Herein, Co doped MnO 2 nanosheet with oxygen vacancy on nickel foam (NF) was fabricated via a simple hydrothermal method. Phase composition and microstructure of the as-prepared catalysts were systematically characterized. The optimized Co 0.07 -MnO 2 /NF exhibited superior norfloxacin (NOX) degradation efficiency, achieving 98.2 % removal and 56.4 % total organic carbon (TOC) mineralization within 60 min. The Co 0.07 -MnO 2 /NF/PMS system possessed prominent tolerance to inorganic anions (Cl – , NO 3 – and H 2 PO 4 – ) and universal degradation capability for typical organic contaminants as well as satisfactory cyclic stability. Electrochemical analysis, scavenger experiment and EPR analysis verified the generation of SO 4 • – , •OH, •O 2 – , 1 O 2 and high-valent Co(IV)/Mn(V)-oxo species in Co 0.07 -MnO 2 /NF/PMS system, among which SO 4 • – and 1 O 2 dominated NOX degradation. XPS analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculation elucidated that Co/Mn active sites and oxygen vacancies boosted reactive oxygen species generation during PMS activation by enhancing PMS adsorption, accelerating interfacial electron transfer and promoting O-O bond cleavage in PMS. Finally, three plausible degradation pathways were proposed, and the overall ecotoxicity of the degradation solution can be reduced as the reaction progresses. This work clarifies the underlying mechanism of Co doping enhancing PMS activation capability of MnO 2 and can provide valuable guidance for rational design of highly efficient and stable PMS activators through defect engineering for wastewater remediation. Hollow MnO2 nanosystem for glioblastoma sono-immunotherapy based on blood-brain barrier crossing and oxygen supply strategy

Danyang Qu,Xingqi Pan,Hao Cui,Jinfeng Yang,Mengmeng Wang,Yao Wu,Xiaojing Cai,Xinyu Yan,Yingying Zhang,Meilin Shi

Although smart nanomaterials based on novel therapeutic diagnostics show great potential in cancer treatment, their poor targeting properties and the presence of blood-brain barrier (BBB) in glioblastoma (GBM) significantly reduce the treatment efficacy. This study constructed a multifunctional nanoplatform for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-guided sono-immunotherapy of in situ GBM. Hollow manganese dioxide nanoparticles (NPs) loaded with sonosensitizer Chlorine e6 (Ce6) and surface-modified with transferrin (Tf), named as Ce6@HMpp-Tf NPs. The modification of Tf can help Ce6@HMpp-Tf NPs cross BBB and aggregate at the glioma site, enabling targeted delivery and significantly enhancing the treatment efficiency. Additionally, the carriers can response to acidic tumor microenvironment and be degraded into Mn 2+ for MRI monitoring. Furthermore, the therapeutic mechanism was elaborated by inducing the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) to exert sonodynamic therapy, activating the cyclic GMP-AMP synthase (cGAS) stimulator of interferon genes (STING) pathway, and activating dendritic cells (DCs) and T cells. Overall, this study demonstrated the significant synergistic anticancer effects of sono-immunotherapy and provided a new method for GBM treatment. Effects of MnO2 on phase composition, microstructure, and varistor properties of ZnO-SrCO3-Cr2O3-Co3O4-based ceramics

Siyuan Li,Yang Yu,Haojie Duan,Dong Yue,Yu Feng

Bi-free ZnO-SrCO 3 -Cr 2 O 3 -Co 3 O 4 based varistor ceramics with the composition (97.4- x ) mol% ZnO-2 mol% SrCO 3 -0.1 mol% Cr 2 O 3 -0.5 mol% Co 3 O 4 - x mol% MnO 2 ( x  = 0–0.7) were prepared by a conventional solid-state reaction method. The effects of MnO 2 on the microstructure, grain-boundary barriers and nonlinear electrical properties were systematically investigated. MnO 2 addition induced a non-monotonic change in ZnO grain size, altered the morphology and distribution of the Sr rich intergranular phases, and promoted the formation of crystalline Sr 2 Mn 2 O 5 at x  ≥ 0.5 mol%. The sample with x  = 0.5 mol% exhibited the best initial nonlinear electrical characteristics among the compositions investigated, with E 1 mA = 614 ± 18 V/mm, α = 33.2 ± 1.7, J L = 3.66 ± 0.37 μA/cm 2 , and ϕ b = 0.866 ± 0.022 eV. Further increasing the MnO 2 content increased the Sr 2 Mn 2 O 5 phase fraction and refined the ZnO grains but reduced the nonlinear coefficient, indicating that the electrical response depended on the combined effects of phase composition, Sr-rich intergranular morphology, grain size, and grain-boundary-related electrical characteristics rather than on the amount of Sr 2 Mn 2 O 5 alone. These results demonstrate that appropriate MnO 2 addition can effectively regulate the microstructure and grain boundary related electrical response of Sr-Cr-based varistor ceramics.
