Sensitive electrochemical sensor for nitrite ions based on rose-like AuNPs/MoS2/graphene composite

Yujie Han,Ran Zhang,Chuan Dong,Fangqin Cheng,Yujing Guo

Nitrite ions (NO 2 − ) have been widely used in the food and drink industry as preservatives. However, the NO 2 − discharged into the environment is harmful to the ecosystem and human health. Due to its potential toxicity, selective and sensitive detection of nitrite is important. In this work, a rose-like Au nanoparticles/MoS 2 nanoflower/graphene (AuNPs/MoS 2 /GN) composite was fabricated using a one-pot hydrothermal method without the addition of any extra reductant for use in nitrite detection. Graphene acts as an efficient matrix for the growth of MoS 2 nanoflower (NF), and the edges of the MoS 2 NF subsequently load AuNPs. The obtained AuNPs/MoS 2 /GN composite exhibits excellent electrooxidative activity toward nitrite ions, which is attributable to its large specific surface area, good conductivity, and the synergistic catalysis of each component. Accordingly, we propose a rapid, sensitive, and cost-effective electrochemical method for nitrite detection, which achieved a linear dynamic range of 5.0 μM to 5.0 mM with a detection limit of 1.0 μM. The present work provides not only a general one-pot synthesis method for a variety of noble–transition metal dichalcogenides nanohybrids , but also an example of the fabrication of an electrochemical nitrite sensor using a nanohybrid as an enhanced material, an approach that can easily be extended to other sensors.

Nanocomposite membranes embedded with functionalized MoS2 nanosheets for enhanced interfacial compatibility and nanofiltration performance

Meng-Qi Ma,Chao Zhang,Cheng-Ye Zhu,Sheng Huang,Jing Yang,Zhi-Kang Xu

Two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets have attracted extensive attention and have been considered as compelling nanofillers of polyamide-based nanofiltration membranes (NFMs) with thin film nanocomposite (TFN) frame. However, there still remains a big challenge, the poor compatibility between these 2D nanofillers and the polyamide matrix, significantly restricting their practical applications. Herein, we present TFN NFMs by incorporating tannic acid (TA) functionalized molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) nanosheets into the polyamide skin layers via typical interfacial polymerization of piperazine (PIP) and trimesoyl chloride (TMC). TA was employed to assist the aqueous exfoliation of bulk MoS 2 into 2D nanosheets, and simultaneously served as the functional molecule to modify and stabilize the as-exfoliated MoS 2 nanosheets in aqueous solutions. Thanks to the contribution of TA, the MoS 2 nanosheets can be covalently linked into the skin layers through the reaction of TA and TMC, thus exhibiting excellent compatibility with polyamide matrix. Besides, the as-prepared TFN NFMs show promoted water permeation as high as 17.0 L/m 2 ⋅h⋅bar without compromising the salt rejection of divalent ions (98.5%). Moreover, these high-performance TFN NFMs also possess outstanding long-term stability, with great implication for the practical applications.

Sublimation-Induced Sulfur Vacancies in MoS2 Catalyst for One-Pot Synthesis of Secondary Amines

Yunrui Zhang,Yongjun Gao,Siyu Yao,Siwei Li,Hiroyuki Asakura,Kentaro Teramura,Haijun Wang,Ding Ma

MoS2 catalysts with abundant S and Mo defects have been developed for the one-pot reductive amination of nitro compounds with aldehydes to synthesize secondary amines. The combination of multiple structural characterizations demonstrates that the density of S vacancies can be tuned by changing the thermal sublimation temperature. The experimental results and DFT calculations demonstrate that S vacancies on the surface of MoS2 are the active sites for the hydrogenation of the intermediate imines to the final products secondary amines.

Fabrication of an ultrathin 2D/2D C3N4/MoS2 heterojunction photocatalyst with enhanced photocatalytic performance

Weibing Li,Lin Wang,Qiang Zhang,Zhuoyuan Chen,Xiaoyan Deng,Chang Feng,Likun Xu,Mingxian Sun

An ultrathin 2D/2D C 3 N 4 /MoS 2 (U-CN/MoS 2 ) heterojunction photocatalyst was prepared by a simple mechanical grinding technique to investigate the photocatalytic degradation RhB and hydrogen production performance. Physical characterization shows that the ultrathin MoS 2 nanosheets (U-MoS 2 ) can form heterojunction with the ultrathin C 3 N 4 (U-CN), and their intrinsic crystal structure remains stable. Further photocatalytic performance test demonstrated that the U-CN/MoS 2 heterojunction photocatalyst significantly enhanced the photocatalytic activity of U-CN. The U-CN/MoS 2 photocatalyst with 3% mass fraction of MoS 2 station (U-CN/MoS 2 -3) has the optimal photocatalytic performance. Due to MoS 2 has a suitable band structure and can replace noble metal as a co-catalyst, the U-CN/MoS 2 -3 could achieve the hydrogen production efficiency of 385.04 μmol∙h −1 ∙g −1 , which makes MoS 2 show potential in photocatalytic hydrogen production. The enhanced photocatalytic performance was attributed to the significantly enhanced concentration of photogenerated carriers, the effective separation of photogenerated carriers, and suppressed recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes in the photocatalytic reaction.

Superior adsorption of methyl orange by h-MoS2 microspheres: Isotherm, kinetics, and thermodynamic studies

Yanhong Wu,Minhua Su,Jiawei Chen,Zuopeng Xu,Jiafeng Tang,Xiangyang Chang,Diyun Chen

A batch equilibrium system was used in this study to investigate the adsorption of methyl orange (MO) on hollow molybdenum disulfide (h-MoS 2 ) microspheres . The effects of experimental conditions, such as the initial concentration, agitation time, solution pH and temperature, on the adsorption were examined. The adsorption of MO on h-MoS 2 microspheres was unexpectedly ultrafast. Adsorption equilibrium was rapidly achieved in 10 seconds, and the maximum adsorption capacity for MO was 41.52 mg/g. The Langmuir and Freundlich models were used for determining the adsorption parameters. The results reveal that the Freundlich model fits well with the experimental adsorption data. Pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and intraparticle diffusion models were applied to determine the kinetics of MO ultrafast adsorption. The obtained results indicate that the experimental kinetics data of h-MoS 2 microspheres are well explained by the second-order model. The obtained values of the thermodynamic parameters (Δ H 0 , Δ S 0 , and Δ G 0 ) indicated that MO adsorption on h-MoS 2 microspheres was an exothermic and spontaneous process. The thermodynamic parameters also confirmed that the MO adsorption is a chemical and physical adsorption process on the surfaces of h-MoS 2 microspheres. The adsorption mechanism was further advanced by FT-IR. The findings of this study open an avenue for applying h-MoS 2 microspheres for organic dyes removal from industrial wastewater streams.

Building MoS2/S-doped g-C3N4 layered heterojunction electrocatalysts for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction

Shuo Geng,Weiwei Yang,Yong Sheng Yu

Developing the stable and efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalyst is greatly desirable for the production of hydrogen as a clean energy resource. Herein, we report a simple and effective approach to fabricate MoS 2 /S-doped g-C 3 N 4 layered heterojunction electrocatalysts, which can adjust the electron structure, enhance the charge transfer rate and expose more active sites of MoS 2 for HER. The optimized MoS 2 -C 3 N 4 -60 sample shows a small onset overpotential as low as 115 mV, a low overpotential of 173 mV to achieve current density of 10 mA/cm 2 , a low Tafel slope of 53 mV decade −1 , and a high turnover frequency of 0.16 H 2  s −1 per active site at η = 150 mV. This finding proposes a new strategy to fabricate 2D layered heterojunction for enhancing HER performance by rationally coupling two similar layered materials.

Ethylenediamine functionalized MoS2 quantum dots for terramycin sensing in environmental water and fish samples

Xueping Yu,Yang Meng,Yue Yan,Xiaoyong Jin,Gang Ni,Juan Peng

In this paper, a simple and effective fluorescent system was fabricated for sensitive detection of terramycin using ethylenediamine functionalized MoS 2 quantum dots (EDA-MoS 2 QDs) as probes. The monodisperse EDA-MoS 2 QDs were synthesized by microwave-assisted one-step bottom-up strategy. The obtained EDA-MoS 2 QDs have excellent water solubility and ultra-small sizes with an average diameter of 1.72 nm. In addition, they show strong fluorescence with high fluorescence quantum yield (22.62%). The existence of terramycin can effectively quench the fluorescence of EDA-MoS 2 QDs based on intermolecular charge transfer and aggregation-induced quenching mechanism. The fluorescence quenching efficiency is linearly dependent on the concentration of terramycin. The EDA-MoS 2 QDs exhibit high sensitivity for terramycin detection with a detection limit of 0.5 nM. Moreover, the EDA-MoS 2 QDs modified filter papers quickly determine the trace amounts of terramycin in fresh fish. The fluorescence quenching-induced color change can be observed by the naked eye under the UV light. The sensor system based on EDA-MoS 2 QDs has the good analytical performance, and can be applied to environmental water and food security monitoring.

In Situ Generation of Bifunctional Fe-Doped MoS2 Nanocanopies for Efficient Electrocatalytic Water Splitting

Jiang-Yan Xue,Fei-Long Li,Zhong-Yin Zhao,Cong Li,Chun-Yan Ni,Hong-Wei Gu,David James Young,Jian-Ping Lang

Design and synthesis of non-noble metal electrocatalysts with high activity and durability for the electrolysis of water is of great significance for energy conversion and storage. In this work, we prepared a series of Fe-doped MoS2 nanomaterials by simple one-pot solvothermal reactions of (NH4)2MoS4 with FeCl3·6H2O. An optimized working electrode of Fe-MoS2-5 displayed high hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity with a relatively small overpotential of 173 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm–2 in 0.5 M H2SO4, along with no significant change in catalytic performance even after 1000 cyclic voltammetry (CV) cycles. Fe-MoS2 nanoparticles on nickel foam (NF; denoted as Fe-MoS2/NF) exhibited an overpotential of 230 mV at 20 mA cm–2 for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and 153 mV at 10 mA cm–2 for the HER in 1.0 M KOH electrolyte. Fe-MoS2/NF was stable for more than 140 h under these conditions. Furthermore, the two electrode system of Fe-MoS2/NF (anode)//Fe-MoS2/NF (cathode) electrodes demonstrated excellent electrocatalytic activity toward overall water splitting with a low potential of 1.52 V at 10 mA cm–2 in 1.0 M KOH electrolyte.

Microwave synthesis of MoS2/MoO2@CNT nanocomposites with excellent cycling stability for supercapacitor electrodes

Yunrui Tian,Haishun Du,Miaomiao Zhang,Yayun Zheng,Qingping Guo,Huaiping Zhang,Jujie Luo,Xinyu Zhang

Herein, we present an ultrafast microwave approach for fabricating MoS2/MoO2@CNT nanocomposites toward supercapacitor electrodes with excellent cycle stability. The surface chemistry, crystalline structure and morphology of the as-produced nanocomposites were characterized by FTIR, XRD, XPS, EDS and SEM. It was found that MoS2/MoO2 nanoparticles could grow uniformly on the surface of CNTs, and the CNTs can provide a transport path for ions in electrolytes and reduce energy loss, thus leading to enhanced electrochemical performance of the resultant nanocomposites. Electrochemical results showed that the capacitance of the nanocomposite electrode was increased by 187.1% after 25 000 cycles at a current density of 5 A g−1, indicating outstanding cycling stability. Also, the maximum capacitance of the optimized MoS2/MoO2@CNT electrode can reach 228.4 F g−1 at 0.5 A g−1. Moreover, an asymmetric supercapacitor (MoS2/MoO2@CNT//AC) was assembled which exhibited a maximum energy density of 11.88 W h kg−1 and a power density of 2 kW kg−1, respectively. Intriguingly, the asymmetric supercapacitors could successfully light three LED lights for 5 minutes, showing their great practical application potential in portable supercapacitors.

Ultra-thin MoS2 shell deposited on Ag nanowires for tuning surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy

Shen-wei Bai,Hui Mei,Lai-fei Cheng

In this article, we report an ultra-thin shell of MoS 2 (3–7 nm) deposited on Ag nanowires (AgNWs) to form a core-shell hybrid system by the sol-gol method. Since AgNWs is easy to be oxidized, a protection shell is necessary. Compared with commonly used hydrothermal method for MoS 2 , it could produce a more thinner and homogeneous shell with the least 3 nm thickness of MoS 2 shell, which is a breaking-through of making MoS 2 shell based on noble nanoparticles . Results show that the obtained hybrid system has great value on surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) due to surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect of Ag nanowires. Ultra-thin MoS 2 shell was suitable for protecting AgNWs and simultaneously had excellent SERS signature, and this effect was rare for MoS 2 shells. By decreasing the thickness of MoS 2 film from 7 to 3 nm, the intensity of SERS signal could be enhanced. It was observed that the microstructure of this AgNWs@MoS 2 system consist of crystal AgNWs surrounded by crystal MoS 2 . AgNWs@MoS 2 showed excellent SERS effect with Rhodamine 6G (R6G) and N719 dyes, the detection limit could reach to 10 −5 M. Finally for comparison, local electromagnetic field enhancement of AgNWs@SiO 2 was also simulated to indicate AgNWs@MoS 2 better.

Porous coin-like Fe@MoS2 composite with optimized impedance matching for efficient microwave absorption

Junjie Pan,Xin Sun,Tao Wang,Zetao Zhu,Yuping He,Wei Xia,Jianping He

Magnetic metallic materials compounded with dielectric loss materials are promising for efficient microwave absorption as a result of the synergistic effect between dielectric loss and magnetic loss, as well as the optimized impedance matching. In this paper, porous coin-like structured Fe@MoS 2 composite has been fabricated via solvothermal method accompanied by subsequent heat treatment under H 2 /Ar atmosphere. The structure and morphology of as-prepared Fe@MoS 2 composite indicates that MoS 2 nanosheets with the two-dimensional (2D) structure are well dispersed on the porous coin-like Fe micro-sheets to form a core-shell structure. Particularly, the addition of MoS 2 regulates the permittivity as well as improves the impedance matching of the Fe@MoS 2 composite. The as-prepared composite shows efficient microwave absorption properties with the maximum effective absorption bandwidth (reflection loss below −10 dB) of about 4.73 GHz (11.13–15.86 GHz) at the corresponding coating thickness of 2.0 mm, accompanied by the minimum reflection loss of about −37.02 dB. When the calcination temperature increases to 650 °C, the effective microwave absorption frequency band shifts to the lower frequency (9.91–14.19 GHz) with the minimum reflection loss of about −35.5 dB under the coating thickness of 2.0 mm. Considering the efficient microwave attenuation, the as-fabricated porous coin-like Fe@MoS 2 composite can be a hopeful candidate in the field of microwave absorption.

Single-Layered MoS2 Directly Grown on Rutile TiO2(110) for Enhanced Interfacial Charge Transfer

Huihui Liu,Yue Li,Miaomiao Xiang,Hualing Zeng,Xiang Shao

Interfacial charge transfer is critical for the photocatalytic activities of compositional photocatalysts. In this work, we have developed a strategy of growing single-layer MoS2 sheets on the rutile TiO2(110) single-crystal surface using a chemical vapor deposition method. Both on-site and off-site characterizations confirmed the monolayer thickness and single crystallinity of the MoS2 adlayer as well as the atomic flatness of the composite surface. Without the presence of contamination, the charge flow across the interface of MoS2 and TiO2 is greatly enhanced, which hence favors the charge separation under excitations and boots up the catalytic activity of the composite system. Moreover, we found the luminescing property of MoS2 is significantly tailored upon coupling with the TiO2 surface. Our work has established a method for revealing the interface properties of the transition-metal dichalcogenides and oxide semiconductors at the atomic level.
