A series of new PMDA@CS/PVA composite membranes were fabricated by the crosslinking of pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) with chitosan (CS) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) in the presence of glutaraldehyde (GA) as a crosslinking agent. While, their adsorptions for Cu(II), Co(II), and Ni(II) in a single- and multiple mixed solutions were investigated. It was found that the incorporation of PMDA in the membranes can significantly enhance the adsorption capacity of membranes for these metals. The fitting of kinetic modeling s showed that the sorption manner of Cu(II), Co(II) and Ni(II) on the membranes obeyed the quasi-2nd kinetic modeling, indicating that it was dominated by chemisorption. The kinetic rate constants K 2 of membranes A-E for Cu(II), Co(II), and Ni(II) were in the region of 0.005–0.02, 0.026–0.082, and 0.002–0.053 [g/(h·mg)], respectively. The fitting of sorption isotherm modeling followed the Langmuir isotherm equation and the maximal Langmuir adsorption capacities for Cu(II), Co(II), and Ni(II) could reach 36.466, 32.119, and 30.916 mg/g, respectively. In addition, in the multi-component solutions, these membranes exhibited better selection for Cu(II) in Cu(II), Co(II), and Ni(II) mixed solutions. Moreover, it can be recycled five times when an EDTA was used as a de-sorbent. The exploration based on statistical physics principle confirmed that the adsorption of these membranes for Cu(II) is a mono-ion manner. These findings suggest that PMDA@CS/PVA composite membranes are promising sorbents for the removal of toxic metal ions from waste vehicle power batteries or metal-bearing wastewater.

Wound dressings play an important role in the wound healing process. For the shortcomings of traditional wound dressings, hydrogel wound dressing with high strength and high water content is a new ideal wound dressing. In this study, polyvinyl alcohol and sodium alginate were selected as raw materials to form the first layer of network structure by physical cross-linking and chemical cross-linking. Then, the double network structure composite hydrogels were obtained by immersed in tannic acid solution. The microstructure, mechanical properties, water content, swelling ratio, antibacterial properties, adhesion properties and rheology of the hydrogels were subsequently investigated. The obtained double network hydrogels have high mechanical properties due to chemical cross-linking and hydrogen bonding interactions, and the maximum tensile strength can reach 4.06 MPa and the elongation at break is up to 569.12%. The optimized calculations from molecular simulations proved that the strengths of the three different types of hydrogen bonds formed reached 37.70, 54.98 and 60.50 kJ/mol, respectively, also justifying the high mechanical strength of the hydrogels. The hydrogel can form good adhesion on various substrate materials such as wood, plastic, glass and pigskin with maximum adhesion strengths of 200.6, 24.8, 24.4 and 13.1 kPa, respectively. Wood surface has higher adhesion strength due to the presence of large amount of cellulose and hydrogen bonds formed by hydrogel. In conclusion, good adhesion can be formed on the surface of different materials. It was a wound dressing with potential application. Graphical abstract

There are significant issues with commercial separators that must be resolved before they can be used in high-energy-density batteries . These problems include low porosity, poor electrolyte wetting, and low mechanical properties. This study presents a facile method for preparing composite crosslinked hydrogel nanofibers of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) with 2-acrylamide-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AMPS) for lithium-ion battery separators by utilizing methacrylated lignin (LMA) as a bio-based crosslinker . Initially, LMA was synthesized by grafting glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) onto lignin via esterification. Subsequently, a crosslinked hydrogel nanofiber membrane (PVA/AMPS-LMA) was electrospun with varying LMA fractions, which were polymerized by combining free radical copolymerization and esterification reactions. The effectiveness of LMA as a crosslinker was assessed against the N, N′-methylene bisacrylamide (MBA). The study showed that using LMA as a crosslinker significantly improved the membrane's properties. The PVA/AMPS-LMA separator displayed superior features such as mechanical strength , thermal stability, porosity, electrolyte uptake, ionic conductivity , and lithium-ion transference number, when compared with PVA/AMPS, PVA, and Celgard separators. Specifically, the PVA/AMPS-LMA separator demonstrated a high mechanical strength of 24.9 MPa, strong thermal stability at 170 °C with no shrinkage, high porosity (84.3 %), and electrolyte uptake (661.4 %). It also exhibited exceptional ionic conductivity (2.75 mS/cm) and a notable lithium-ion transference number (tLi + = 0.717). In coin batteries, the PVA/AMPS-LMA separator retained over 96 % capacity (142.4 mAh/g) after 200 cycles at 1C. This performance exceeded that of PVA/AMPS, PVA, and Celgard separators, suggesting that PVA/AMPS-LMA separators have the potential to replace their commercial counterparts.

Phase change materials (PCMs) are considered to be promising energy storage materials, but the advanced utilization of PCMs is limited by liquid phase leakage, low thermal conductivity and poor solar-to-thermal conversion ability. Herein, inspired by the structure of nacre, we used boron nitride nanosheets (BNNs) coated with polydopamine (PDA)-modified tetrapod zinc oxide (T-ZnO) to prepare multilayered BNNs/PDA@T-ZnO hybridized particles (BPT), and then employed them to reinforce the PVA aerogel to obtain a BPT/PVA skeleton. Due to the robust support of T-ZnO substrate, BPT/PVA skeleton has ordered porous structure and excellent mechanical properties, with compressive strength up to 15.7 MPa. The prepared composite PCMs of polyethylene glycol (PEG) supported by BPT/PVA skeleton (PVA/BPTs/PEG) have good heat storage capacity, thermal conductivity and solar-to-thermal conversion efficiency. The rigid BPT/PVA skeleton endows PVA/BPTs/PEG with good shape stability and durability, whereas the melting enthalpy and crystallinity of PVA/BPT/PEG reach 139.0 J·g −1 and 99.6 %, respectively. The intermediate dopamine layer of BPT acted as an adhesive for BNNs and T-ZnO and excellent solar-to-thermal conversion medium, which cause the PVA/BPTs/PEG composites to have excellent solar-to-thermal conversion efficiency (95.2 %). Meanwhile, the thermal conductivity of PVA/BPTs/PEG reach 1.34 W·m −1 ·K −1 , benefiting from the continuous 3D heat transfer path provided by the stacked BPT particles. Considering the outstanding overall performance, the prepared composite PCMs have the potential to be suitable for the application of high efficiency thermal management and solar energy utilization.

Using natural rubber (NR)/chitosan (CS)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as raw materials, biodegradable semi-IPN (semi-interpenetrating polymer network) composites were prepared by thiol-epoxy click reaction under UV light, which was used as the shell of sustained release preparation. Using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) as raw material and vanillin as the cross-linking agent, hydrogen-bonded hybrid network hydrogel loaded with urea was prepared by freeze-thaw cycle, which was used as the core of sustained-release preparation. Finally, a green-coated urea fertilizer with core-shell structure was prepared to ameliorate the environmental pollution of slow-release fertilizer (for example, synthetic polymer-coated fertilizers are difficult to biodegrade), as well as to achieve the water retention and the effective slow-release. The high CS/PVA contents and the combination of the hydrogel core and the rubber shell significantly improved the mechanical properties of the coating material (tensile strength above 5 MPa, elongation at break up to 1400 %), hydrophilicity (to promote the degradation rate of the rubber shell) and soil water retention of the coating material (close to pure hydrogel), showing enhanced reaction. In terms of slow-release effect, coated nitrogen fertilizer with 3 % CS content, 5 % PVA content and 10-min coating time (SRP3/10) achieved the best slow-release effect of nitrogen (N) in water (62.7 % at 10 days), which was related to the hydrophilicity, semi-IPN skeleton and the cross-linking structure of the network, and the release conformed to the Korsmeyer-Peppas model with a non-Fickian diffusion release mechanism, indicating that the behavior of N release was mediated by a combination of drug diffusion and skeleton dissolution.

In this work, we successfully prepared the 2D Ni-Fe MOF-HNTs composites by in-situ hydrothermal growth, followed by enabling it to full into PVA hydrogels, thereupon fabricating the oil/water separation 2D Ni-Fe MOF-HNTs/PVA-decorated stainless steel mesh. The structures and mechanical properties of the composites were identified by a series of characterizations. The results showed that the 2D Ni-Fe MOF nanosheets were gown on the outer surface of HNTs to form the exclusive composite structure and the 2D Ni-Fe MOF-HNTs/PVA composite membrane possessed a more compact pore structure, which exhibited the outstanding mechanical performance and the fatigue resistance ability. The surface property characterizations demonstrated that the 2D Ni-Fe-MOF-HNTs/PVA composite membrane had the superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic features. Ultimately, the results of the water flux and separation efficiency on 2D Ni-Fe-MOF-HNTs/PVA composite membrane for oil-water separation and emulsion separation corroborated that it was a promising high-performance separation composite membrane.

Freshwater has become a rare resource on account of population increase and environmental pollution. At present, most the solar-driven interfacial evaporators used for water polluted by organic solvents and dyes have an outstanding nature of clean water production due to their special design. However, its downside is that contaminants remaining in the residual polluted water cannot be removed. Herein, a device applied to water polluted by organic solvents and dyes is formed by a hydrogel-based interfacial evaporator (PVA hydrogel/CNTs) and non-wetting fabric. The photodegradation efficiency of the non-wetting fabric is 95.7% for Rh B dye after five cycles. Meanwhile, the organic solvents including toluene, cyclohexane and so on are cleared through the non-wetting fabric. Importantly, the device presents a clean water production rate of 1.73 kg·m −2 ·h −1 under 1 sun illumination and it has a freshwater produce rate of 1.63 kg·m −2 ·h −1 after 6 h of desalination experiments. Furthermore, the device displays the performance of salt resistance in a 3 h NaCl dissolution experiment. A new strategy is provided for interfacial water evaporation technology used for water dyed by organic solvents and dyes purification and has a great application potential.

Although many advances have been made in medicine, traumatic bleeding and wound infection are two of the most serious threats to human health. To achieve rapid hemostasis and prevent infection by pathogenic microbes, the development of new hemostatic and antibacterial materials has recently gained significant attention. In this paper, safe, non-toxic, and biocompatible polyvinyl alcohol (PVA); carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), which contains several carboxyl and hydroxyl groups; and polyethylene glycol (PEG), which functions as a pore-forming agent, were used to prepare a novel PVA/CMC/PEG-based composite hydrogel with a macroporous structure by the freeze-thaw method and the phase separation technique. In addition, a PVA/CMC/PEG@ZIF-L composite hydrogel was prepared by the in situ growth of zeolitic imidazolate framework-L (ZIF-L). ZIF-L grown in situ on hydrogels released Zn2+and imidazolyl groups. They elicited a synergistic antibacterial effect in hemostasis with PVA and CMC, rendering the PVA/CMC/PEG@ZIF-L hydrogel with a good antibacterial effect againstStaphylococcus aureus. At the same time, the macroporous structure enabled the rapid release of Zn2+and imidazolyl groups in ZIF-L and promoted cell proliferation at an early stage, enhancing the coagulation efficiency. A rat liver injury model was used to confirm its rapid hemostasis capacity. Keywords:in situ growth;macroporous structure;synergistic antibacterial;rapid hemostatic;carboxymethyl cellulose;wound dressing;hydrogel;ZIF-L;polyvinyl alcohol;phase separation technique

Special wettable materials have been shown to be promising for use in oil-water separation and, in particular, hydrogel-based materials have been studied for water separation from oil-water mixtures due to their high hydrophilicity . Here, a superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic phosphorylated PVA (PPVA) hydrogel-coated stainless-steel mesh with underwater oil repellency was prepared using a simple and facile route that introduced metal ions for PVA crosslinking. The PPVA hydrogel-coated mesh can not only separate immiscible oil-water mixtures but also separate surfactant-stabilized oil-in-water emulsions with a high separation efficiency (>99.2%). In addition, due to its multiple crosslinked networks, the resultant PPVA hydrogel-coated mesh exhibited good chemical stability and wear resistance and can tolerate high acid, alkali, salty and organic solvents .

A high dielectric constant and electric breakdown strength are desired in high-energy-density polymer/ceramic composites. Ultrahigh interface leakage conduction between polymer and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) hinders the development of CNT-filled composite dielectrics. In this work, composite dielectrics bearing V2C MXene-CNT hybrid-particles were fabricated. Environment-friendly polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was employed as the matrix. Interface polarization between PVA and ceramics improved the dielectric constant of composites. A switchboard micro-structure was obtained in the hybrid-ceramic consisting of layered V2C and thread-like single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). This micro-structure led to adsorption-migration of fluorine from V2C to CNTs, triggering Coulomb-blockade zones at CNT surfaces supported by first-principles molecular-dynamics calculations. Interface leakage conduction between CNTs and PVA was depressed by quick-slow-quick (QSQ) electron transmission of CNTs. Compared to PVA/CNT composites, PVA/V2C–CNT composites exhibited a favorable high dielectric constant, strongly depressed low dielectric loss and conductivity, and elevated high breakdown strength. The ternary composite with 5 wt% hybrid-ceramic showed a dielectric constant of ∼232 (122 times that of PVA) and a dielectric loss of ∼0.2 (1.4 times that of PVA) at 100 Hz, as well as a breakdown strength of ∼35 MV m−1 (60% of that of PVA). A balance of high dielectric constant and breakdown strength was achieved in the ternary system. This work might enable large-scale preparation of high-performance composite dielectrics.

Developing novel dressings with superior antibacterial properties to resist bacterial infections during wound healing remains a significant challenge. Hydrogels have emerged as prominent materials due to their excellent biocompatibility and adjustable functionality, and are widely applied in the field of wound therapy. However, the majority of hydrogels exhibit suboptimal mechanical properties, which hinder their practical application. In order to integrate dynamic function design and remarkable antibacterial activity, a dual-network (DN) hydrogel with multiple dynamic bonds was designed and constructed. Specifically, carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) were used as hydrogel matrix. Oxidized sodium alginate (OSA) and borax were utilized as crosslinking agents, resulting in the formation of Schiff base bonds and borate ester bonds with CMCS and PVA, respectively. Concurrently, berberine (BBR) was incorporated into the system to impart sustainable release properties and elevated antibacterial efficacy. The maximum antibacterial rates of the hydrogel against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) reached 97.1 % and 99.9 %, respectively, exhibiting remarkable synergistic antibacterial activity. Furthermore, the dynamic crosslinked DN hydrogel endowed it with exceptional mechanical properties, malleability, adhesion, self-healing, and self-adaptive ability, rendering it more efficacious in actual wound sites. Moreover, the hydrogel also exhibited favorable blood and cell biocompatibility, characterized by a hemolysis rate of less than 1 % and cell viability exceeding 90 %. Overall, the multifunctional hydrogel demonstrates considerable potential in addressing the challenges associated with infectious wound healing, thus indicating its candidacy as a promising wound dressing.

The development of triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG)-powered gas sensors capable of actively harvesting environmental energy has become critically important in today's energy-conscious world. This study presents a triethylamine (TEA) gas sensor based on a PVA/MXene/CoFe 2 O 4 nanocomposite hydrogel TENG, utilizing heterointerface-rich MXene/CoFe 2 O 4 nanomaterials combined with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) polymer matrix. Systematic characterization via XRD, XPS, SEM, and TEM elucidated the composite's elemental composition and microstructure. The PTMC-7 TENG-powered sensor demonstrated exceptional electrical output, generating 170 V open-circuit voltage under 7 N contact force at 1 Hz frequency - sufficient to power 30 LEDs through rectifier-integrated circuits. Its silicone encapsulation enabled finger-joint mounted micro-motion detection. The sensor exhibited 105.11 % response to 100 ppm TEA at room temperature with fast response/recovery (31 s/23 s) and outstanding stability (<3.2 % degradation over 30 days). By converting TENG output modulation into gas concentration readings, this design achieves battery-free TEA detection while synergistically integrating energy harvesting and sensing functionalities, establishing a novel paradigm for flexible sensor development.
