The direct hydrogenation of 2,4-dinitrotoluene (2,4-DNT) to 1-methyl-2,4-cyclohexanediamine (2,4-MCHD) represents a significant yet non-industrialized green process for synthesizing methylcyclohexane diisocyanate (HTDI), known for its excellent properties. This process faces considerable challenges due to the hydrogenation of the benzene ring, the reduction of two nitro groups, and the need to avoid deamination reactions. In this study, an alkali-free heterogeneous catalytic system was developed for the direct hydrogenation of 2,4-DNT to 2,4-MCHD using Ru nanoclusters supported on γ-Al 2 O 3 . Side reactions such as deamination were effectively inhibited, resulting in a 2,4-MCHD selectivity exceeding 95% and a 2,4-DNT conversion greater than 99%. Kinetic studies indicated that the hydrogenation of 2,4-DNT in this system operates as a tandem reaction, with the hydrogenation of the benzene ring serving as the rate-determining step. Structure-activity relationship studies demonstrated that the valence state of Ru nanoclusters, the acidity and basicity of the catalyst, and the synergistic effect between Ru and the support significantly influence catalytic performance. This work represents the first example of the direct hydrogenation of dinitroaromatic compounds to aliphatic diamines in a system that does not require the addition of alkali elements, thereby establishing a solid foundation for the further exploration of such reaction systems.

Anion etching strategy has been developed to fabricate dual-function active site catalysts with a clear division of labour. • The Ru O /TiO 2 catalyst breaking the activity-selectivity trade-off of cinnamaldehyde hydrogenation. • The high electron density of Ru active sites effectively lowers the reaction barrier for isopropanol activation. • The oxygen vacancies dominate the product selectivity, as they promote the preferential activation of -C=O groups. • Revealed the promotional effect of the carbon radical-mediated pathway on cinnamaldehyde hydrogenation. The activity-selectivity trade-off is a longstanding challenge for the selective hydrogenation of α,β-unsaturated aldehydes/ketones, and conventional single-atom or defective catalysts often fail to simultaneously increase the conversion and selectivity via a single active site. Herein, we develop a one-step anion etching strategy to synchronously fabricate electron-enriched Ru single-atoms and high-density oxygen vacancies on the anatase TiO 2 support, realizing spatially adjacent yet functionally divided dual active sites. The optimal Ru O /TiO 2 catalyst breaks the activity-selectivity trade-off, achieving 99% cinnamaldehyde conversion with 95% selectivity for cinnamyl alcohol under visible light, and has excellent structural stability and substrate universality. Combined characterizations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that oxygen vacancies modulate the electronic metal-support interaction (EMSI) between Ru single-atom and the TiO 2 support and suppress electron transfer from Ru to TiO 2 , thereby forming electron-rich Ru centres that efficiently activate isopropanol for a continuous hydrogen supply. Moreover, oxygen vacancies exclusively anchor the -C O group of cinnamaldehyde in an end-on adsorption mode and inhibit -C C hydrogenation. Thus, the synergistic effect between the dual-function active sites enables the high-efficiency and high-selectivity hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde. This work clarifies the synergistic mechanism of single-atoms and vacancies at the atomic level and provides a facile, universal strategy for designing high-performance catalysts for the selective transformation of unsaturated organics. Osteolytic bone metastasis remains difficult to treat because effective tumor eradication and bone regeneration must be achieved simultaneously. Current calcification-based strategies are constrained by their reliance on exogenous phosphate, and poor integration with controllable therapeutic modalities. Herein, we report a tumor adhesive metal-phenolic network nanoplatform that enables phosphate-independent membrane biomineralization combined with photothermal amplification. The Ru/Ca-TA-ALN network, assembled from ruthenium ions (Ru 3+ ), calcium ions (Ca 2+ ), tannic acid (TA), and alendronate (ALN), co-integrates Ca 2+ and phosphate-bearing moieties within a single coordination framework, allowing autonomous mineral deposition upon adhesion to tumor cell membranes. This membrane-confined calcified interface induced S-phase arrest, and impaired tumor viability. Under 1064 nm near-infrared (NIR) irradiation, Ru 3+ -mediated photothermal activation amplifies tumor cell apoptosis. Beyond tumor inhibition, the calcified nano-bio interface promoted osteogenic differentiation while suppressing osteoclastogenesis, shifting the bone microenvironment toward regeneration. In a murine breast cancer bone metastasis model, calcification-photothermal synergy significantly reduced tumor burden, mitigated bone destruction, and prolonged survival, while maintaining favorable biocompatibility. By transforming biomineralization into a controllable interfacial therapeutic modality, this work establishes a strategy that couples tumor suppression with bone reconstruction for metastatic bone disease.

en This link goes to a English section zh This link goes to a Chinese section Lignin hydrogenolysis is a promising route to separable aromatic monomers, yet practical upgrading is still hindered by macromolecular mass-transfer limitations and the aggregation/deactivation of metal sites. Herein, we propose a “dual-confinement” strategy to construct ultrafine Ru nanoclusters supported on lignin-based N-doped hierarchical porous carbon, utilizing lignin itself as the precursor. This architecture synergizes physical confinement via a potassium oxalate-activated hierarchical pore network, with chemical confinement through in situ nitrogen doping that anchors Ru species. The resulting catalyst exhibits exceptional performance, achieving 99.8% conversion of model compounds and a remarkable 40.6 wt% yield of aromatic monomers from isolated birch lignin under mild conditions. The exceptional catalytic performance originates from synergistic dual-confinement effects, in which hierarchical porosity enables efficient mass transfer of lignin substrates, whereas N-doping provides robust chemical anchoring of the ultrafine Ru active sites. Density functional theory calculations further elucidate that electronic modulation at the Ru–N interface significantly lowers the activation energy for C–O bond cleavage. This work demonstrates a high-efficiency depolymerization protocol and establishes a theoretical framework for designing robust dual-confined catalysts in macromolecular biomass conversion. 摘要 en This link goes to a English section zh This link goes to a Chinese section 木质素氢解是制备可分离芳香单体的重要途径,然而其实际转化升级仍受制于大分子传质阻力以及金属活性位点团聚与失活等问题。

Solar-driven CO 2 reduction is confronted with challenges of limited light absorption and elevated reaction energy barriers. To address these, a solvothermal-wet coupled chemical reduction method was developed to precisely construct a bifunctional catalyst comprising single-atom Ru and clustered Ni on porous CeO 2 nanorods, featuring efficient CO 2 methanation in H 2 O vapor under concentrated solar irradiation (4.01 W·cm −2 ). Through lattice substitution at Ce sites, Ru single atoms form a distinctive pentacoordinate configuration, largely accelerating H 2 O dissociation to generate active hydrogen (*H). Conversely, Ni clusters enhance visible-to-near-infrared light capture via localized surface plasmon resonance effects, optimizing the CO 2 adsorption configuration to reduce the activation energy barrier of the C=O bond. The synergistic interplay between these dual sites, mediated by the hydrogen spillover effect, resolves the spatiotemporal mismatch between proton supply and carbon source activation. Based on the evidence from femtosecond and nanosecond transient absorption spectroscopy, the Ru/Ni dual-active sites enable spatially decoupled directional transport of charge carriers, synergistically handling the photogenerated carrier transfer dynamics. Furthermore, the robust photoelectric and thermal effects induced by concentrated irradiation enhance photogenerated carrier concentrations and the reaction temperature, reducing the apparent activation energy for CH 4 formation to 14.61 kJ·mol −1 (a 29.9% decrease compared to non-concentrated systems). This catalyst achieves a CH 4 production rate of 133.1 μmol·cm −2 ·h −1 (a 31-fold enhancement over non-concentrated systems) and a solar-to-chemical energy conversion efficiency of 0.423%, offering insights into the design of photothermal synergistic catalytic systems through atomic-scale active site decoupling and multi-physical field coupling.

This study presents the development of a highly sensitive and selective electrochemical sensor based on ruthenium-gold nanocluster-functionalized carbon fiber microelectrodes (AuNPs/RuNPs/CFME) for the ultrasensitive detection of acetaminophen (ACOP) and its genotoxic impurities, p-aminophenol (PAP) and p-nitrophenol (PNP). Leveraging the synergistic electrocatalytic effects of bimetallic nanoparticles, the modified electrode demonstrated exceptional performance, achieving wide linear ranges (0.04–100 µmol L−1 for ACOP, 1–10 µmol L−1 for PAP and PNP) and remarkably low detection limits (6.192 nmol L−1 for ACOP, 0.19 µmol L−1 for PAP, and 0.015 µmol L−1 for PNP). The sensor exhibited outstanding stability, anti-interference capability, and successful application in human serum samples with recoveries of 95.9–100.5%. Furthermore, the study explored the genotoxic interaction between ACOP and double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) using electroanalytical, UV spectrophotometric, and molecular docking techniques. Results revealed that ACOP intercalates into dsDNA via hydrogen bonding and π–π stacking, providing mechanistic insights into its hepatotoxicity at high concentrations. The proposed sensor not only offers a robust platform for multiplexed drug monitoring but also advances understanding of ACOP-induced DNA damage, highlighting its potential in pharmacokinetic studies and toxicity assessment. This work underscores the significance of nanomaterial-enhanced electrochemical sensors for pharmaceutical quality control and toxicity assessment.

Robust metal-support interactions are crucial for designing efficient and corrosion-resistant electrocatalysts, as they significantly enhance charge separation and catalytic activity while also improving the stability and atomic utilization of metal catalysts. Here, we reported a temperature-regulated synthesis strategy to fabricate a self-supporting Ru/B,N co-doped MoO 2 electrocatalyst on a CNT framework (RBNM/CNTs 500 ), designed to simultaneously enhance catalytic activity and durability under practical electrolyzer conditions. The RBNM/CNTs 500 featured a unique nanostructure with excellent conductivity and strong chemical stability, while oxygen-vacancy-rich MoO 2 units at the interface reinforced metal-support interactions. This architecture stabilized Ru species during the OER and facilitated proton transfer, thus accelerating HER kinetics as confirmed by density functional theory calculations. As a result, RBNM/CNTs 500 exhibited outstanding bifunctional electrocatalytic performance, achieving exceptionally low overpotentials of 9 mV for the HER and 166 mV for the OER at 10 mA cm ‒2 , along with superior overall water-splitting activity characterized by a low cell voltage of 1.42 V and stable ampere-level operation at 10, 1000, and 2000 mA cm ‒2 in alkaline media. When integrated into an anion-exchange membrane water electrolyzer, RBNM/CNTs 500 demonstrated exceptional durability and surpassed benchmark electrocatalysts in performance. This study offers mechanistic insights into defect engineering and underscores a rational design approach for next-generation energy conversion devices.

Solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOECs) hold significant potential for efficient, high‑rate conversion of CO 2 and H 2 O into syngas driven by renewable electricity. However, SOEC performance is often constrained by the scarcity of fuel electrode materials that combine high activity with structural stability for CO 2 and H 2 O electrochemical reduction. Here, we develop a rationally designed fuel electrode, Sr 1.95 FeMg 0.3 Mo 0.6 Ru 0.1 O 6-δ (SFMMRu), that exhibits coherent exsolution of ultrasmall Ru nanoparticles (1-5 nm) with an exceptionally high surface number density (∼2.7 × 10 4 particles µm −2 ). The resulting high density of stable metal-oxide interfaces markedly enhances CO 2 and H 2 O electroreduction kinetics. As a result, the SFMMRu exhibits low polarization resistances of 0.254 Ω cm 2 in 50% CO/CO 2 and 0.143 Ω cm 2 in 40% H 2 O/H 2 at 800°C. In SOEC operation at 1.5 V, high current densities of 2.24 A cm −2 and 2.88 A cm −2 are achieved for CO 2 and H 2 O electrolysis, respectively. Long-term operation exceeding 200 h at 1 A cm −2 in pure CO 2 demonstrates the high durability of the fuel electrode. Advanced electron microscopy combined with density functional theory calculations indicate that the formation of ultrasmall, densely distributed Ru nanoparticles stems from strong metal-support interactions between the Ru phase and the perovskite substrate.

A challenging but urgent task is to construct efficient and robust hydrogen evolution reaction(HER) electrocatalysts for practically feasible and sustainable hydrogen production through alkaline water electrolysis. Herein we report a simple and mild pyrolysis method to synthesize the efficient Ru nanoparticles(NPs) supported on Co-embedded N-doped carbon nanotubes(Ru/Co-NCNTs) catalyst for HER in basic media. The Ru/Co-NCNTs display remarkable performance with a low overpotential of only 35 mV at 10 mA/cm 2 , a small Tafel slope(36 mV/dec), and a high mass activity in 1 mol/L KOH, which is superior to commercial 20% Pt/C catalyst. This excellent performance is benefited from the enhanced conductivity of N-doped carbon nanotubes(NCNTs) and high intrinsic activity triggered by synergistic coupling between Ru NPs and Co-embedded N-doped carbon nanotubes(Co-NCNTs).

Li-CO 2 batteries could capture and convert CO 2 into a valuable energy storage medium. The slow kinetics and high activation barrier associated with the breakdown cleavage of discharge products pose a significant hurdle in the advancement of reversible Li-CO 2 batteries. Herein, cotton-derived self-standing carbon fibers were utilized to disperse Ru nanoparticles which could avoid depletion of active sites caused by stacking of graphite-based supports. Consequently, CBRu cathode presents small voltage polarization of 1.41 V at high current density of 200 μA cm −2 , and high energy efficiency of 76.0 % at 20 μA cm −2 as well as long-term cyclability over 1000 h. According to in/ex-situ characterizations and theoretical calculations, the unique cross-linked structure of the carbon fibers offers ample space for the deposition of discharge products while these ultrafine Ru nanoparticles regulate the growth path of Li 2 CO 3 and accelerate reaction kinetics. This study offers a novel perspective on the selection of self-standing cathode carbon matrix for Li-CO 2 batteries.

Herein, Fe 3 O 4 @Ru-doped TiO 2 photocatalyst was developed successfully by a facile chemical strategy. The sample with 0.2% doping Ru showed the best photocatalytic activity, which could photodegrade 70.20% of methylene blue after 120 min of simulated sunlight exposure, and kept good degradation efficiency and recovery after 5 cycles. It could be attributed that the Ru-doping alleviated the band gap energy to make the electron-hole pairs easier to generate and enhanced the synergistic effect to increase the carrier separation efficiency. The present work provided a development prospect of simple preparation of recoverable photodegradation catalyst for environmental organic pollutants.

Nitrate pollution threatens ecological environment and human health. Electrochemical reduction of nitrate to ammonia using metal-doped modified cathode is a promising technique for nitrate removal. In this work, a bimetallic Ru/Pd-doped Cu foam (CF) electrode was developed for nitrate reduction using cation exchange method. Confirmed by various physio-chemical characterization, it was found that the Ru/Pd-Cu Spongy Copper Foam (SCF) was successfully prepared. In addition, nearly 100 % nitrate removal, 94.07 % NH 3 selectivity, and 84.9 % Faradaic efficiency (FE) could be achieved, under the optimized conditions as 100 mg L −1 of initial NO 3 - -N concentration, 0.3 mol L −1 of Na 2 SO 4 as electrolyte and the applied current of 5.42 mA cm −2 . Through electrochemical testing and DFT calculation, it was revealed that the bimetallic doping of Ru/Pd facilitate electrocatalytic nitrate reduction reaction (NO 3 RR) by reducing the energy barriers of the NO 3 - -to-NH 3 pathway from 0.81 to 0.56 eV. Besides, the electrode showed excellent stability and anti-toxicity even after 10 repeated NO 3 RR cycles, since the NH 3 yield rate and NH 3 selectivity ranged from 0.206 to 0.231 mg h −1 cm −2 , 87–96.87 % respectively. After NO 3 RR, an extended electrochemical oxidation process was implemented to remove ammonia, and nearly 100 % of NH 3 was oxidized to N 2 without byproducts. Thereby, this study provides a new option for the electrochemical reduction of nitrate to ammonia via cathode modification, to achieve the substantial nitrate removal from nitrate-containing water.
