Background Trivalent chromium (Cr 3+ ), a relatively environmentally benign and biologically beneficial species of chromium, is widely applied in manufacturing processes as well as in the food and healthcare industries. Exploring a convenient, dependable, and sensitive method for Cr 3+ monitoring becomes practically important for ensuring environmental health and food safety. Results In this study, a o -phosphoethanolamine-functionalized, sheet-like manganese-based nanozyme (OPA@MnT) with excellent oxidase-like activity was designed for sensitive and selective Cr 3+ sensing based on target-induced nanozyme crosslinking. The OPA functional group and nanosheet structure enable specific coordination with Cr 3+ via nitrogen and oxygen donors, triggering aggregation of OPA@MnT and a reduction in active oxygen vacancies, both of which effectively suppress its catalytic activity. Based on this mechanism, a facile colorimetric sensing strategy was established, exhibiting a wide linear detection range (0.25–10 μM), a low detection limit (0.15 μM), and selectivity against potential interfering species. The method was successfully applied to environmental water and dietary supplement samples, showing good agreement with standard ICP-MS measurements. Significance Our work provides a simple, sensitive, and reliable strategy for Cr 3+ monitoring with promising applications in environmental analysis and food safety assessment. Moreover, the elucidated interaction mechanism between metal ions and nanozymes offers valuable insights for the rational design of nanozyme-based sensing platforms for broader analytical applications.

The radical-mediated degradation of polysaccharides is a promising route to modify their bioactivity, but the fundamental role of side-chain substituents in directing these reactions remains unclear. Therefore, this study systematically investigated the influence mechanisms of substituents on the monosaccharide degradation under UV/H₂O₂ treatment. Six glucose derivatives, including d -glucose, D-gluconic acid, methyl-D-glucopyranoside, D-glucal, D-glucosamine, and D-glucono-δ-lactone, were selected to represent typical electron-donating (-OCH₃, -NH₂), electron-withdrawing (-COOH, -C=O), and unsaturated double bond (C=C) groups. Degradation kinetic analysis revealed that electron-donating groups accelerated the radical degradation (k obs = 31.59 × 10 −3 min −1 for D-glucal), while electron-withdrawing groups decelerated it (k obs = 17.50 × 10 −3 min −1 for D-gluconic acid). The formation of carbonyl and carboxyl groups showed distinct accumulation patterns dependent on the substituent. Product profiling via high-performance anion exchange chromatography coupled with tandem electrospray mass spectrometry (HPAEC-ESI-MS/MS) demonstrated unique fragment patterns for each derivative, confirming substituent-directed reaction pathways. Quantum chemistry calculations further validated the proposed mechanisms, showing that electron-donating groups lowered the energy barriers for key steps such as hydrogen abstraction and peroxyl-radical cleavage. This work elucidates that the electronic properties of side-chain substituents determine the regioselectivity, kinetics, and product distribution in monosaccharide radical degradation. The findings provide a foundational mechanistic framework for predicting and controlling the degradation of complex functional polysaccharides.

Sulfided NiMo catalysts can effectively hydrogenate oxygen-rich bio-oils into high quality hydrocarbon fuels. However, precisely controlling the cleavage of C−O bonds remains challenging. Here, we synthesized an oil-soluble precursor NiMo 6 -DODA by encapsulating the polyoxometalates (POMs) (NH 4 ) 4 [NiMo 6 O 24 H 6 ] (NiMo 6 ) with surfactants, followed by in-situ construction of an ultra-dispersed monolayer NiMoS catalyst. The “surfactant shell” of the precursor ensured its homogeneous dispersion in the oil phase, while gradually sacrificing and decomposing during the sulfidation to mitigate the aggregation of the MoS 2 nanosheets. Meanwhile, the well-defined “POMs core” established an atomic-level Ni-Mo proximity, ensuring the dominance of the Ni-promoted MoS 2 active phase. This design not only altered the adsorption configuration of esters on the NiMo catalyst but also introduced abundant edge sulfur vacancies to promote oxygen atom adsorption and accelerate C−O bond cleavage. The results showed that NiMo 6 -DODA achieved 100% conversion of methyl palmitate and 100% alkane selectivity under low catalyst loading conditions. Notably, the selectivity for n -hexadecane reached 94.2%, significantly surpassing that obtained with a commercial oil-soluble precursor (69.8%). Furthermore, the catalyst maintained high activity across multiple reaction cycles and in the solvent-free conversion of real bio-oils. This strategy of pre-assembly combined with sacrificial sulfidation provides a simple and effective route for designing hydrodeoxygenation catalysts that enable precise control over ester C−O bond cleavage.

Transition-metal oxides offer a low-cost alternative to precious metals for environmental catalysis, yet CO oxidation under humid and sulfur-laden conditions remains challenging due to rapid poisoning. Herein, we report an atomic dispersion of Ti‑decorated MnO x -Fe 2 O 3 catalyst that achieves high activity and remarkable H 2 O/SO 2 resistance. Atomically dispersed Ti provides electron-accepting 3d states from O 2p orbitals, which redistributes and stabilizes selected O 2p states while modifying their hybridization with neighboring Mn/Fe 3d orbitals. The localized electronic restructuring strengthens CO adsorption and facilitates lattice oxygen activation via a Mars-van Krevelen (MvK)-like mechanism, lowering the apparent activation energy to 64.59 kJ/mol. Simultaneously, Ti-O-Fe interfaces weaken SO 2 adsorption (from −1.96 eV to −0.19 eV) and suppress H 2 O competition, retaining >55% CO conversion under 10 vol% H 2 O and 10 ppm SO 2 , far surpassing the parent oxide (<10%). The orbital tuning strategy enables scalable poison resistant catalysts for industrial emission control, reducing reliance on precious‑metal systems.

A Bi₄Ti₃O₁₂/BiOCl heterojunction with a coherent interface was constructed via a room-temperature ion-exchange process. • A Bi₄Ti₃O₁₂/BiOCl heterojunction with a coherent interface was constructed via a room-temperature ion-exchange process. • The photocatalyst exhibits excellent performance for the degradation of high-concentration, recalcitrant antibiotics. A strategy is reported for the in-situ fabrication of a Bi₄Ti₃O₁₂/BiOCl heterojunction with shared atomic layer through simple room-temperature ion-exchange on pure Bi₄Ti₃O₁₂. This strategic interfacial engineering, combined with a Type-II band alignment, the Aurivillius-type Bi₄Ti₃O₁₂ and BiOCl share the Bi₂O₂ 2+ layers at the interface, thereby dramatically accelerating the separation and migration of photo-generated carriers and ultimately significantly increasing the yield of photocatalytic reactive species. Consequently, the optimized composite photocatalyst exhibits exceptional performance in the degradation of high-concentration antibiotics. It achieves remarkable degradation efficiencies of 90.8% for sulfamethoxazole (20 ppm) within 120 min, 92% for tetracycline hydrochloride (40 ppm) and 78.6% ciprofloxacin (15 ppm) within just 30 min. Demonstrating superior photocatalytic performance compared to the previously reported analogous photocatalysts in recent years with respect to antibiotic degradation. Furthermore, the degradation efficiency of the as-prepared photocatalyst also demonstrates outstanding cycling stability, with a reduction of only 3.4% after 4 cycles. Therefore, this coherent Bi₄Ti₃O₁₂/BiOCl heterojunction photocatalyst exhibits immense potential for practical applications in environmental remediation.

Ligand-directed inheritance creates asymmetric Cu–N/Cu–O motifs for CO 2 reduction. • Symmetry-breaking preserves highly active Cu δ+ interfaces under dynamic conditions. • Dual-mode *CO adsorption (atop/bridge) effectively bypasses C 2+ scaling laws. • Optimized sites lower C–C coupling barriers while poisoning hydrogen evolution. • Achieved 82.2% C 2+ FE at 0.9 A cm −2 with stable 50 h ampere-scale electrolysis. The electrochemical CO 2 reduction reaction (ECR) to multi-carbon (C 2+ ) chemicals is intrinsically hindered by the rigid scaling relations and geometric homogeneity of pristine copper surfaces, which enforce a singular atop-type *CO intermediate. Herein, we implement a ligand-directed motif inheritance strategy to synthesize nitrogen-doped CuO (N-CuO) nanoparticles, uniquely characterized by asymmetric Cu–N/Cu–O lattice motifs. Under severe cathodic polarization, these robust Cu–N bonds structurally modulate the metallic reconstruction, preserving local non-metal coordination to sustain a highly active, mixed-valence Cu δ+ species. Operando spectroscopic and theoretical analyses reveal that this local structural asymmetry disrupts adsorption homogeneity, explicitly driving the spatial co-adsorption of bridge- and atop-type *CO intermediates. This dual-mode configuration bypasses conventional kinetic bottlenecks to drastically accelerate C–C dimerization. Consequently, the N-CuO catalyst delivers a record-level C 2+ Faradaic efficiency of 82.2% at an industrially relevant current density of 0.9 A cm −2 , exhibiting exceptional structural and catalytic stability over 50 h of continuous flow-cell operation. This work establishes atomic-scale lattice asymmetry as a decisive design principle for stabilizing active Cu δ+ species and steering multi-carbon electrosynthesis at practical reaction rates. The gut microbiome is increasingly linked to breast cancer (BC) progression; however, specific microbial metabolites and their direct mechanistic connections to oncogenic signalling remain poorly defined. Here, using multi-omics analyses in treatment-naïve patients with BC, we identified gut microbiota-derived uridine diphosphate N-acetylglucosamine (UDP-GlcNAc) as a circulating oncometabolite associated with therapeutic response. We further showed that Ruminococcus lactaris is a key intestinal commensal capable of de novo UDP-GlcNAc biosynthesis, and that microbial-derived UDP-GlcNAc acts as an independent tumour-promoting metabolite, even though the host hexosamine pathways generate the majority of circulating UDP-GlcNAc pools. Mechanistically, UDP-GlcNAc systemically activates O-GlcNAc transferase (OGT), stabilizing the transcription factor NFIB, and triggers a feed-forward loop that upregulates OGT and the proto-oncogene KIT , thereby driving BC progression. Genetic or pharmacological inhibition of OGT disrupts this signaling axis and suppresses tumour growth, even in the presence of UDP-GlcNAc–producing bacteria. These findings reveal a gut microbiota–metabolite–host signalling circuit, in which a microbial metabolite hijacks a core host post-translational modification pathway to promote BC progression, providing novel opportunities for microbiome-targeted diagnosis and therapy. Gut‑microbiota‑derived UDP‑GlcNAc enters circulation, activates host OGT‑mediated O‑GlcNAcylation to stabilize NFIB. This triggers a feed‑forward loop elevating OGT and proto‑oncogene KIT , driving breast tumor progression. Inhibiting OGT blocks this oncogenic axis even with UDP‑GlcNAc‑producing Ruminococcus lactaris . This reveals a gut‑microbe‑metabolite‑host signaling circuit for breast cancer. Synergistic strain/phase engineering boosts photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance. • The CdS-O/MS-5 achieves a high hydrogen evolution rate of 68.71 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 and AQE of 48.49%. • Strain-enhanced charge transfer couples with metallic/semiconducting phase junctions. While high-efficiency photocatalytic water splitting is pivotal for a sustainable hydrogen economy, its widespread implementation is hindered by sluggish charge-carrier kinetics and the formidable overpotentials inherent to traditional semiconductor. Here, we report a dual-optimization strategy to transcend these limitations by integrating oxygen-doped CdS (O-CdS) with a 1 T/2H-MoS 2 phase-engineered co-catalyst. The interstitial incorporation of oxygen induces a pronounced lattice expansion within the CdS framework, which reconfigures the electronic band structure by introducing additional electronic states near the Fermi level. These emergent states act as energetic stepping stones, facilitating efficient charge injection into the co-catalyst. Concurrently, the rational design of the 1 T/2H-MoS 2 metallic/semiconducting homojunction facilitates efficient interfacial charge extraction and provides abundant active sites for proton reduction. This synergistic integration of lattice-strain engineering and phase-controlled co-catalytic architectures simultaneously elevates photocatalytic activity and long-term durability. The optimized system exhibits a 2.5-fold enhancement in hydrogen evolution performance (68.71 mmol g −1 h −1 ) over the pristine CdS. Our findings establish a robust paradigm for leveraging lattice distortion and polymorphic phase engineering to optimize solar-to-chemical energy conversion in hybrid semiconductor architectures.

Bacterial resistance poses a growing challenge that requires innovative antibacterial solutions. This study assessed the antibacterial activity of methylamide-modified rhamnolipids (RLs‑MMA). RLs-MMA was first synthesized through amide condensation of methylamine with the carboxyl group of rhamnolipids. The structure of the derivatives was confirmed using FTIR NMR, and LC‑MS analyses. RLs‑MMA were significantly potent against Gram‑positive bacteria. Against Bacillus cereus , the MIC was as low as 16 mg/L. This value represents a 16‑fold improvement on di‑RLs (256 mg/L) and a 4‑fold improvement on mono‑RLs (64 mg/L). The MIC values of RLs‑MMA against Staphylococcus aureus and methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) were in the range of 64–128 mg/L, significantly lower than values for unmodified RLs (≥256 mg/L). RLs‑MMA alone were ineffective against Gram‑negative bacteria (MIC >512 mg/L). However, combing them with the photosensitizer toluidine blue O (TBO) under red‑light irradiation, the synergy was considerable. Checkerboard assays revealed fractional inhibitory concentration index (FICi) values < 0.375 and < 0.25 for Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa , respectively. According to mechanistic studies, RLs‑MMA permeabilizes bacterial membrane integrity, promotes the uptake of intracellular TBO, and enhances the photodynamic generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). This combined membrane permeabilization and photodynamic strategy can overcome the outer membrane of Gram‑negative bacteria.

The garnet-type Li 6.4 La 3 Zr 1.4 Ta 0.6 O 12 (LLZTO) is considered a promising solid-state electrolyte (SSE) due to its high ionic conductivity and electrochemical stability. However, the surface of LLZTO easily reacts with H 2 O and CO 2 in the air, forming a passivation layer of Li 2 CO 3 . This reaction further deteriorates the interface between LLZTO and the Li anode, resulting in poor wettability. Consequently, significant gaps form between LLZTO and the Li anode, leading to uneven deposition of Li during the cycling. Li dendrites can grow into these gaps, eventually penetrating the electrolyte and causing a short circuit in the battery. In this study, a surface modification method is investigated, where a thin film of titanium is deposited onto the surface of LLZTO electrolyte tablets using magnetron sputtering. The effects of magnetron sputtering deposition titanium film process parameters—chamber pressure, bias voltage, and temperature—on the electrochemical properties of button cells were investigated. The results indicated that LLZTO electrolyte tablets coated with titanium exhibited low interfacial resistance, high cycle stability, and significant inhibition of Li dendrites under optimized conditions of 1.0 Pa chamber pressure, 100 V bias voltage, and 150 ℃ temperature. Under these conditions, the interface resistance decreased significantly from 1437.9 Ω to 190.19 Ω. Additionally, the Li symmetric cell assembled with the titanium-coated LLZTO electrolyte tablet demonstrated stable cycling for over 1200 h at 25 ℃ under a current density of 0.1 mA·cm −2 .

The two-dimensional (2D) layered structure of MXene provides a large specific surface area, making it an ideal platform for optimizing geometric configurations in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) applications. In this study, we developed a novel ternary core-shell nanostructure, Ag@Cu2O-MXene, in which Ag@Cu2O core-shell nanoparticles (NPs) are uniformly anchored onto 2D Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheets. The Ag NPs exhibit strong localized surface plasmon resonance, while the narrow bandgap and high electron mobility of Cu2O shell promote efficient charge transfer. Importantly, plasmonic coupling between the Ag core and the MXene substrate further enhances plasmon absorption, resulting in a substantial increase in SERS activity and enabling highly sensitive molecular detection. Using this composite, we achieved an ultra-low detection limit of 10–9 M for methylene blue. MXene substrate further facilitates rapid electron transfer from the Ag core to the the Cu2O shell, while its surface defects contribute additional charge carriers to Cu₂O, enhancing the utilization of photogenerated electron. Notably, the SERS enhancement was positively correlated with the thickness of Cu2O shell, highlighting the tunable nature of the Ag@Cu2O-MXene core-shell nanostructure.

Poly( o -phenylenediamine) was synthesized in different inorganic acid media, hydrochloric (HCl), nitric (HNO 3 ), and phosphoric acid (H 3 PO 4 ).
The aim was to investigate the protective effect of doped coatings on mild steel in an aggressive environment. The synthesized doped-PoPD products were characterized by x-ray diffractometry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and cyclic voltammetry. The inhibition abilities of doped coatings were evaluated by potentiodynamic polarization measurements and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in 3.5% NaCl solution. In the present article, the lowest corrosion current and highest protection efficiency of the doped polymer were observed for the polymer synthesized in HNO 3 medium. The results showed that good protection of mild steel can be achieved by PoPD coating doped with inorganic acid in 3.5% NaCl solution.
