Bi-DOPO Structure Flame Retardants with or without Reactive Group: Their Effects on Thermal Stability and Flammability of Unsaturated Polyester

Yuan Cao,Xiu-Li Wang,Wen-Qiang Zhang,Xue-Wu Yin,Yue-Quan Shi,Yu-Zhong Wang

A novel reactive phosphorus-containing flame retardant 1,4-phenylene-bis((6-oxido-6H-dibenz[c,e][1,2]-oxaphosphorinyl) methylene) diacrylate (TDCAA-DOPO), with two symmetrical 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphena-nthrene-10-oxide structure (bi-DOPO), was synthesized and combined with unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) via cross-linking to prepare flame-retardant UPR (FR-UPR). To make clear both the effects of the bi-DOPO structure and the cross-linking reaction on the thermal stability and flame retardancy of UPR, an additive flame retardant that also owned bi-DOPO structure but without a vinyl bond, 1,4-phenylene-bis((6-oxido-6H-dibenz[c,e][1,2]-oxaphosphorinyl) carbinol) (TDCA-DOPO), was used as a contrast. The results showed that the incorporation of TDCAA-DOPO or TDCA-DOPO into UPR can reduce its peak heat release rate (PHRR) and total heat release (THR), as well as improve the limiting oxygen index (LOI) value. As compared to TDCA-DOPO, the reactive TDCAA-DOPO endowed FR-UPR with enhanced thermal stability, residual char, and glass transition temperature (Tg), which were even higher than those of pure UPR. Besides, their flame-retardant mechanism for UPR had been well investigated.

Engineering versatile bi-network ionic conductive hydrogels wearable sensors via on demand graft modification for real-time human movement monitoring

Dequan Wei,Shenghua Lv,Jingjing Zuo,Jinru Liu,Jialin Wang,Leipeng Liu,Qiao Zeng

With the rapid development of the field of flexible electronics, it is necessary to develop more new flexible sensor materials with a high degree of flexibility, stretchability, biosafety, and good electrical conductivity to better achieve wearable with the human body. Cellulose hydrogels are promising building blocks for flexible sensors due to their renewability and excellent mechanical strength properties. In this study, we demonstrate an imidazolium ionic cellulose/polyacrylic acid hydrogel (ILHPMC/PAA) with high flexibility, antimicrobial properties and electrical conductivity. Firstly, epoxidized imidazole ionic liquids were synthesized using methyl imidazole as raw material, and imidazole ionic cellulose was prepared by grafting modified hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC). Imidazolium ionic cellulose hydrogels were prepared by one-step cross-linking and forming a copolymeric bi-network with acrylic acid according to the principle of free radical polymerisation. This hydrogel has high flexibility, stretchability, biocompatibility, and desired electrical conductivity due to the introduction of imidazole ions, and the sensing sensitivity factor (GF) reaches 6.83. The tensile strength can be up to 1.2 MPa, and it also has excellent antibacterial properties, with an antibacterial zone diameter of up to 29.25 mm. This provides insights into the development of cellulose-based sustainable sensing hydrogel sensors for wearable ionic conductive sensing.

Effects of pH on the Photocatalytic Activity and Degradation Mechanism of Rhodamine B over Fusiform Bi Photocatalysts under Visible Light

Yuli Chen,Dechong Ma,Guowen He,Sai Pan

In this study, fusiform bismuth (Bi) was synthesized, and its photocatalytic performance, degradation mechanism, and pathways for removing rhodamine B (RhB) at different pH levels were investigated. Additionally, the morphologies, structural characteristics, surface electronic states, optical properties, active species, and potential degradation pathways of RhB over the fusiform Bi were analyzed. The comparison of the results before and after RhB degradation using the fusiform Bi revealed the formation of a Bi/BiOCl heterojunction photocatalyst. At pH 2.0, 3.0, 5.0, 7.0, and 9.0, the heterojunction exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity, with RhB removal efficiencies of ~97%, 96.7%, 72.6%, 53.5%, and 27.6%, respectively. Moreover, total organic carbon and chemical oxygen demand analyses were performed to evaluate the mineralization rates of RhB with the fusiform Bi at pH 3.0 and 7.0. Furthermore, the effects of catalyst content, initial RhB concentration, light source distance, inorganic anions, and reactant temperature on the photocatalytic performance of the fusiform Bi were investigated. Additionally, the types of active species and potential photocatalytic mechanisms for RhB degradation over the fusiform Bi at different pH levels (3.0 and 7.0) were elucidated. The appropriate degradation pathways were identified via liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry at pH 3.0 and 7.0.

Exploration of TKX-50-M (M=Pb, Bi and Cu) as insensitive high-energy combustion catalysts of HMX-CMDB propellant

Ming Zhang,Ting An,Xiuduo Song,Fengqi Zhao,Ergang Yao,Yongqiang Xue,Ying Wang,Xueli Chen,Zhifeng Yuan,Libai Xiao

In order to deal with the long-standing contradiction between safety and performance for propellent combustion catalyst, the TKX-50-M (M=Pb, Bi and Cu) were designed, synthesized and characterized. The density, thermal decomposition, mechanical sensitivity and energy performance of the prepared TKX-50-M were studied systemically. By taking NTO-Pb as the benchmark, the TKX-50-M exhibited much better energetic and safety properties. Besides, the combination of TKX-50-Pb, TKX-50-Cu and carbon black is conductive to the combustion of HMX-CMDB propellant. The burning rate of HMX-CMDB propellant increases from 16.80 to 21.28 mm s −1 at 20 MPa, and the pressure index reduces from 0.87 to 0.39 in the pressure range of 10–20 MPa. The catalytic mechanism of TKX-50-M were explored according to the results of combustion wave structure, flame image and characteristics of burning out surface. The catalytic effect of TKX-50-Pb is mainly reflected in the gas phase region, and the introduction of TKX-50-Cu and carbon black shows a significant synergistic catalytic effect. The results of this study not only help to explore insensitive high-energy combustion catalyst, but also helps to improve the combustion, energy and safety performance of CMDB propellants.

Facile synthesis of novel bi-heteroatom functionalized hyper-crosslinked porous polymers with efficient adsorption of methylene blue and methyl orange

Fu Xiaolei,He Yan,Guo Zhulei,Chen Mingfan,Du Wenlong,Zeng Yuqin,Yuan Dingzhong,Na Bing

In this work, we designed and synthesized two novel bi-heteroatom functionalized hyper-crosslinked porous polymers (HCP-CT and HCP-CF) through a simple one-step Friedel–Crafts alkylation reaction. The resulted polymers N/S bi-heteroatom functionalized polymer HCP-CT and N/O bi-heteroatom functionalized polymer HCP-CF both have good adsorption property for organic dyes such as methyl orange (MO) and methylene blue (MB) in aqueous solution due to its rich pore structure, high specific surface area and rich-heteroatoms of pore surface. It is worth mentioned that the maximum adsorption capacity ( q max ) of cationic dye MB by the porous polymer HCP-CT at room temperature was reached up to 1571.46 mg/g, which is much higher than that of most reported porous materials. Furthermore, the adsorption capacity of HCP-CT for the cationic dye MB was more than seven times that of the anionic dye MO ( q max  = 212.77 mg/g). Also, the polymer HCP-CF for the MB adsorption capacity ( q max  = 352.11 mg/g) was more than twice higher than that of anionic dye MO ( q max  = 131.75 mg/g). The above trends may be because of the stronger electrostatic interaction between the negatively charged N-S/O bi-heteroatom of HCP-CT and HCP-CF with the cationic dye MB than that of MO. In addition, the removal percentage of polymers HCP-CT and HCP-CF still remained above 80% after five adsorption–desorption cycles. Hence, this work may provide a convenient synthetic route to develop a novel hyper-crosslinked polymer with high capacity for the entrapment of dyes from aqueous solution.

Insights into the multiple active sites in Bi-Co bimetallic oxide for a deeper understanding of nitrate electroreduction to ammonia

Li-Hui Yang,Man-Ting Liao,Jun-Tao Chen,Wei Li,Cao Yang,An-Qi Wang,Si-Hao Lv

The electrochemical nitrate reduction reaction (NO 3 RR) is a promising approach for nitrate removal and NH 3 production at ambient conditions. The development of various types of efficient electrocatalysts, especially bimetallic oxides with the advantages of superior durability and excellent catalytic activity, have become a research focus. However, the analysis of active sites for bimetallic oxide catalysts either emphasizes the role of bimetallic interactions or focuses on the role of oxygen vacancies (OVs), resulting in a lack of thoroughness. Herein, a Bi-Co bimetallic oxide (BCO) was constructed for NO 3 RR, illustrating 1.5∼7.8 folds higher NH 3 yield rate than those of commercial single metal oxide (Bi 2 O 3 , Co 3 O 4 ). The NO 3 RR pathway by BCO was explored according to H* capture test, DEMS, and isotope labeling experiment. An in-situ Raman test showed the structure evolution of BCO during NO 3 RR, and therefore the catalytic sites of BCO were further identified according to physical characteristics before and after NO 3 RR. Results suggest that Bi 0 , OVs and amorphous Co oxide as the real active sites play a vital role in nitrate electroreduction. Furthermore, research on 25 articles also indicates the presence of multiple catalytic sites in bimetallic oxides for NO 3 RR. This study provides a new and comprehensive insight into the active sites identification for the type of bimetallic oxide NO 3 RR electrocatalysts.

Insight into Fe-O-Bi electron migration channel in MIL-53(Fe)/Bi4O5I2 Z-scheme heterojunction for efficient photocatalytic decontamination

Yanyu Song,Xianbo Sun,Long D. Nghiem,Jun Duan,Wen Liu,Yongdi Liu,Zhengqing Cai

Building a heterojunction is a fascinating option to guarantee sufficient carrier separation and transfer efficiency, but the mechanism of charge migration at the heterojunction interface has not been thoroughly studied. Herein, MIL-53(Fe)/Bi 4 O 5 I 2 photocatalyst with a Z-scheme heterojunction structure is constructed, which achieves efficient photocatalytic decontamination under solar light. Driven by the newly-built internal electric field (IEF), the formation of Fe-O-Bi electron migration channel allows for rapid separation and transfer of charge carriers at the heterojunction interface, confirmed by the material characterization and density functional theory (DFT) calculation. The narrower band gap and improved visible light response also contribute to the enhanced photocatalytic activity of composite materials. With levofloxacin as the target pollutant, the optimal MIL-53(Fe)/Bi 4 O 5 I 2 achieves complete removal of pollutant within 150 min, the photocatalysis rate of which is ca. 4.4 and 26.0 times that of pure Bi 4 O 5 I 2 and MIL-53(Fe), respectively. Simultaneously, the optimal composite material exhibits satisfactory photodegradation of seven fluoroquinolones, and the photocatalysis rates are as follows: lomefloxacin > ciprofloxacin > enrofloxacin > norfloxacin > pefloxacin > levofloxacin > marbofloxacin. DFT calculations reveal a positive relationship between degradation rate and Fukui index (ƒ 0 ) of main carbon atoms in seven fluoroquinolones. This study sheds light on the existence of electron migration channels at Z-scheme heterojunction interface to ensure sufficient photoinduced carrier transfer, and reveals the influence of pollutant structure on photolysis rate.

Interfacial engineering of TiO2@Bi-BiOBr by constructing hierarchical core–shell heterojunction to boost charge transfer for photothermal CO2 reduction

Kun Wang,Shen Yu,Peng Jiang,Wenrui Liu,Man-Man Yuan,Wangyu Tong,Lihua Chen,Zhao Deng,Baolian Su

CO 2 reduction by a sustainable pathway such as photothermal catalysis is highly demanded currently, high carrier recombination rate still severely limits the performance of photothermal catalysis. Constructing heterojunction interfaces with high exposed area is an effective strategy to solve the problem of carrier recombination. However, fine control of the interface structure is still highly challenging. Herein, Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were constructed to reveal that metallic Bi leads to more densities of states (DOS) generation at the conduction band edge in Bi-BiOBr, which argues that photogenerated electrons are more likely to be delivered to metallic Bi. A TiO 2 @Bi-BiOBr hollow hierarchical core–shell heterojunction was designed, providing a highly exposed interface and Bi between interfaces. Such structure endows the catalyst with excellent photothermal catalytic performance, achieving a CO yield of 30.4 μmol·h −1 ·g −1 . The highly improved performance is attributed to interfacial thermoelectrons transfer boosted by the construction of TiO 2 @BiOBr heterojunction as well as metal Bi. And a possible CO 2 reduction pathway is proposed, which is consistent with the Carbine pathway. This study provides an exciting idea for the modulation of photoelectron transfer at catalyst interfaces.

Design and conductivity optimization of La0.3Sr0.7TiO3/La0.8Sr0.2MnO3 bi-layer structures as tubular segmented-in-series solid oxide fuel cell interconnect☆

Rui Shi,Yan’an Li,Jiutao Gao,Ziyang Chen,Xin Zhang,Shanlin Zhang,Zaheer Ud Din Babar,Chengxin Li

This study focused on meeting the stringent stability requirements of tubular segmented-in-series solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) in reducing and oxidizing atmospheres. To address this challenge, a bi-layer perovskite ceramic interconnect was designed by controlling the oxygen partial pressure, because of the strong correlation between the conductivity of strontium-doped lanthanum titanate (LST) and the oxygen partial pressure. The LST powder was prepared using solid-phase and sol-gel methods, and their influence on particle size and sintering behavior was compared. LST/lanthanum strontium manganite (LSM) bi-layer ceramic interconnects with varying thicknesses were fabricated through screen printing and co-sintering. The results demonstrate favorable interfacial bonding and excellent chemical compatibility between the ceramic layers. The conductivity of the bi-layer interconnect exhibits a temperature-dependent behavior, peaking at 550 °C. Simulation calculations and research findings validate that the conductivity of the bi-layer interconnect is determined by the thickness of the LSM layer and the oxygen partial pressure at the interconnect interface. Optimal conductivity is achieved with a bi-layer interconnect consisting of approximately 15 μm of LST and 4 μm of LSM. This can be attributed to the efficient regulation of oxygen partial pressure at the interface, effectively mitigating LSM decomposition caused by low oxygen partial pressure and the subsequent reduction in conductivity. These results provide valuable fundamental data and methodology for the development of high-performance interconnects for tubular segmented-in-series SOFCs.

A simple and highly selective electrochemical label-free aptasensor of 17β-estradiol based on signal amplification of bi-functional graphene

Meichuan Liu,Hongyang Ke,Caiqin Sun,Guoqiang Wang,Yu Wang,Guohua Zhao

In the present work, a convenient signal-on electrochemical label-free aptasensor for 17β-estradiol (E2), a typical steroidal hormones endocrine disrupting chemicals , was proposed. 6-mercapto-1-hexanol (MCH) self-assembled monolayer (SAM) modified Au (MCH/Au) electrode was used as the substrate electrode. Graphene is used with bi-functions, not only to adsorb E2 binding aptamer, serving as the recognition element to E2, but also to be assembled onto MCH/Au electrode when sensing E2, to controllably turn on the electron transfer (eT), and further indicate the signal to E2 concentration. With the synergistic effect of DNase I enzyme, highly sensitive detection of E2 was achieved at this aptasensing system, with a linear range from 0.07 to 10 pM and a detection limit of 50 fM. An outstanding selectivity towards E2 was proven for the sensing system by simultaneously detecting 100-fold potential co-existing interferences. The stability and reproducibility were also evaluated to be satisfactory. Spiked real water analysis further indicated its reliability and potential in practical environmental monitoring.

Metal (Ca, Cu, Zn)-modified defect-rich Bi nanosheets for electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 to HCOOH at high current density

Haichuan He,Xiao Yu,Wei Wang,Liu Deng,Hao Zeng,Liqiang Wang,Ke Zeng,Jianhan Huang,Minghui Yang,You-Nian Liu

Bismuth-based materials have emerged as promising electrocatalysts for the electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide (eCO 2 RR) to HCOOH. However, it remains challenges to meet the practical application requirements and identify the active sites of bismuth-based catalysts in eCO 2 RR. Herein, bismuthate (MBi 2 O 4 , M = Ca, Cu, Zn) derived nanosheet-like electrocatalysts with metal-modified edge defects are developed. During electrochemical processes, MBi 2 O 4 pre-catalyst undergoes surface reconstruction to expose more active Bi 0 sites and to form abundant metal-modified edge defects, which facilitate the modulation of charge state of adjacent Bi sites and improve the adsorption of *OCHO intermediate, thereby enhancing the selectivity of eCO 2 RR towards HCOOH. The Ca-modified defect-rich Bi catalyst exhibits a maximum HCOOH Faradaic efficiency of 94.3 % at an industrially relevant current density of 400 mA cm −2 , together with high stability/reproducibility of 55 h. This work proposes a new strategy for construction of Bi-based catalysts and explores its structural reconstruction mechanism during the electrocatalytic process, opening a new window for design of eCO 2 RR catalysts.

Mono-/Bi-valent anion resource recovery via electrodialysis using dual-side-chain functionalized poly(aryl ether sulfone) anion exchange membranes

Junbin Liao,Qishun Zhang,Yu Xu,Shiyu Zhou,Yifan Xu,Wenlong Ding,Zhiqiang Wu,Haoyu Liu,Yanqing Xu,Huimin Ruan,Jiangnan Shen

The ion separation performance of polymer membrane can be significantly enhanced by constructing suitable and stable ion channels within the dense matrix. In this work, we fabricated four anion exchange membranes (AEMs) based on a type of distorted poly(aryl ether sulfone) bearing dual-side-chains and explored the influence of these dual-side-chains by tuning the ratio of the two on the separation performance of Cl−/F− and Cl−/SO42−. Small-angle X-ray scattering analysis indicated that the as-prepared AEMs in wet state possessed sub-nanometer ion channels with a size of 0.334 nm, which resulted from the synergetic modification of the distorted main chains and dual-side-chains. In addition, the stability of the ion channels could be verified by a very low swelling ratio of 5.3%. The AEM with the smallest ion channel demonstrated superior perm-selectivity (Cl−/SO42−) of 52.21 during the electrodialysis (ED) process, compared to other AEMs, such as ACS AEM, which showed a selectivity of 18.63. In addition, the optimum AEM (PPH-sIm10−X-5NX) also exhibited selectivity for Cl−/F− due to its dense structure and hydrophobic side chains. By using free volume and electrostatics-driven simulations, it was inferred that the ion-blocking effect of the dense membrane structure on the transport of larger ions was effective. As a result, this dual-side-chain polymer with a distorted backbone is conducive to constructing stable sub-nanometer ion channels in AEMs for mono-/bi-valent anion resource recovery.
