Bone metastases caused by breast cancer pose a major challenge to the successful treatment of breast cancer patients. Many researchers have suggested that herbal medicines are extremely effective at preventing and treating cancer-associated osteolysis. Previous studies have revealed that Morusin (MOR) is cytotoxic to many cancer cells ex vivo . Nevertheless, how MOR contributes to osteolysis induced by breast cancer is still unknown, and the potential mechanism of action against osteolysis is worthy of further study. The protective effect and molecular mechanism of MOR in inhibiting breast cancer cell-induced osteolysis were verified by experiments and network pharmacology. Cell function was assessed by cell proliferation, osteoclast (OC) formation, bone resorption, and phalloidin staining. Tumour growth was examined by micro-CT scanning in vivo . To identify potential MOR treatments, the active ingredient–target pathway of breast cancer was screened using network pharmacology and molecular docking approaches. This study is the first to report that MOR can prevent osteolysis induced by breast cancer cells. Specifically, our results revealed that MOR inhibits RANKL-induced osteoclastogenesis and restrains the proliferation, invasion and migration of MDA-MB-231 breast cells through restraining the PI3K/AKT/MTOR signalling pathway. Notably, MOR prevented bone loss caused by breast cancer cell-induced osteolysis in vivo , indicating that MOR inhibited the development of OCs and the resorption of bone, which are essential for cancer cell-associated bone distraction. This study showed that MOR treatment inhibited osteolysis induced by breast cancer in vivo . MOR inhibited OC differentiation and bone resorption ex vivo and in vivo and might be a potential drug candidate for treating breast cancer-induced osteolysis.

Antimony selenosulfide (Sb 2 (S,Se) 3 ) is an emerging quasi-1D photovoltaic semiconductor with exceptional photoelectric properties. The low-symmetry chain structure contains complex defects and makes it difficult to improve electrical properties via doping method. This article reports a doping strategy to enhance the efficiency of Sb 2 (S,Se) 3 solar cells by using alkali halide (CsI) as the hydrothermal reaction precursor. It is found that the Cs and I ions are effectively doped and atomically coordinate with Sb ions and S/Se ions. The CsI-doping Sb 2 (S,Se) 3 absorbers exhibit enhanced grain morphologies and reduced trap densities. The consequential CsI-doping Sb 2 (S,Se) 3 based solar cells demonstrate favorable band alignment, suppressed carrier recombination, and improved device performance. An efficiency as high as 10.05% under standard AM1.5 illumination irradiance is achieved. This precursor-based alkali halide doping strategy provides a useful guidance for high-efficiency antimony selenosulfide solar cells.

Through the utilization of smart materials and well-designed structures, functional surfaces have been developed to enable small-scale liquid/solid manipulation tasks, thereby facilitating crucial applications in the fields of microfluidics, soft robotics, and biomedical engineering . However, the design of functional systems with flexible, tunable, and multimodal liquid/solid manipulation capabilities remains a challenging endeavor. Here, inspired by asymmetric structural features in natural plants and metachrony in cross-scale biological systems, I report a magnetic-responsive functional surface that can achieve rich liquid operations under static magnetic fields , while also enabling the transportation of solids with multiple degrees of freedom (DOFs) under dynamic magnetic fields . The presence of curvature pillars on the surface, combined with their magnetic-driven tilt/gradient arrangement, imparts liquids with multi-directional spreading modes based on the asymmetry of Laplace pressure . I elucidate the mechanisms governing these liquid spreading modes and subsequently develop compelling liquid operations, such as adjustable anti-gravity climbing, spontaneous modal shifts in liquid transport, and liquid mixing. Furthermore, the dynamic metachronal motion of the magnetic pillars can be harnessed for solid object transportation. I illustrate the synchronous/asynchronous transport modes of the surface and propose a novel strategy for achieving 3-DOF solid transportation by coordinating the arrangement of objects and employing magnetic actuation strategies. This study presents a new design concept for application-oriented manipulation surfaces, which hold significant potential for extensive engineering applications .

Na superionic conductor ( NASICON)-structured Na 4 MnCr(PO 4 ) 3 (NMCP) possessing unique three-electron transfer process renders admirable energy density for sodium ion batteries (SIBs). However, the current issues like its sluggish Na + diffusion kinetics, deficient intrinsic conductivity, and unsatisfactory structural stability, hinder its practical application. Herein, a selective replacement of O elements in PO 4 group by Cl anions in the NMCP system was developed to significantly enhance its electrochemical performance. The results affirm that the enhanced performance of Cl doped samples can be attributed to the enlargement of cell size, the creation of Na vacancies and the weakness of Na2 O bond after Cl doping. The as-prepared Na 3.85 □ 0.15 MnCr(PO 3.95 Cl 0.05 ) 3 /C (NMCPC − 15/C) cathode delivers a high capacity (128.0 mAh/g at 50 mA g −1 ) and excellent rate performance (73.0 mAh/g at 1000 mA g −1 ) in contrast to NMCP/C that merely provides 105.2 mAh/g at 50 mA g −1 and reduces to 47.4 mAh/g at 1000 mA g −1 . Meanwhile, NMCPC − 15/C shows a capacity retention of 60.7 % at 1000 mA g −1 after 500 cycles, while only 37.1 % for NMCP/C in the same test conditions. Moreover, the satisfactory performance and energy density of NMCPC − 15/C||hard carbon (HC) full cell confirm the potential practicality of NMCPC − 15. Therefore, chloride ions doping into NMCP has practical application prospects in the preparation of high-performance cathode materials and our work also offers new inspiration to apply anion doping strategies in promoting the performance of the other NASICON-structured cathodes for SIBs.

The gut microbiota plays key roles in host health by shaping the host immune responses through their metabolites, like indole derivatives from tryptophan. However, the direct role of these indole derivatives in macrophage fate decision and the underlying mechanism remains unknown. Here, we found that bacterial indole-3-propionic acid (IPA) downregulates interleukin-1beta (IL-1β) production in M1 macrophages through inhibition of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) signaling. Mechanistically, IPA binds specifically with methionine adenosyl-transferase 2A (MAT2A) to promote S-adenosylmethionine (SAM) synthesis, which facilitates the DNA methylation of ubiquitin-specific peptidase 16 (USP16, a deubiquitinase), and in turn promotes Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) ubiquitination and NF-κB inhibition. Furthermore, IPA administration attenuates sepsis in mouse models induced by lipopolysaccharides (LPS), showcasing its potential as a microbial-derived adjunct in alleviating inflammation. Collectively, our findings reveal a newly found microbial metabolite-immune system regulatory pathway mediated by IPA.

Penicillium expansum , a causal agent of blue mold rot, leads to substantial postharvest losses in the fruit industry. Due to environmental pollution and the emergence of fungicide-resistant strains, the use of synthetic chemical fungicides faces severe challenges. Natural antifungal compounds derived from plants are considered promising alternatives. In this study, the antifungal activities of coumarin and five hydroxylated derivatives against P. expansum and involved mechanisms were investigated. Among the six coumarins, 3-hydroxycoumarin (3-HC) demonstrated strong inhibitory effects on mycelial growth, germ tube elongation, conidiation, patulin production, and the best control effect on blue mold in apple and jujube fruit. Moreover, 3-HC increased the sensitivity of P. expansum to the cell wall, oxidative, and osmotic stresses . In silico analyses, including target fishing, molecular docking, and molecular dynamics simulations, revealed that the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) family in P. expansum (Pempks), were the potential targets of 3-HC. Bio-layer interferometry and ATP competition assays found that 3-HC could directly bind to PempkB and PempkC , and inhibit the MAPK activity. Our results suggested that 3-HC may act as an ATP-competitive MAPK inhibitor to affect the MAPK signaling pathway and inhibit the development and pathogenicity of P. expansum .

In this study, 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane-functionalized graphene oxide (AS-GO) was synthesized by one-step refluxing of graphene oxide (GO) with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (AS). The properties of GO and AS-GO were characterized by scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), Fourier transform infrared spectrum (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Specific surface area and Zeta potential. Various factors, such as solution pH, initial Cr(VI) concentration, contact time, temperature and coexisting anions, were analyzed during the adsorption process. The results showed that the Cr(VI) adsorption onto AS-GO was highly pH dependent, and the maximum adsorption capacity reached up to 215.2 mg/g at 328 K. Experimental data, obtained from adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherms studies, could be well fitted by Langmuir adsorption isotherm and pseudo-second-order model. The XPS, FT-IR, and EDS analysis revealed that Cr(VI) removal might be attributed to the Cr(VI) adsorption on surface functional groups (protonated amine groups and Si OH groups) and the reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III). These results demonstrated that AS-GO could be a promising adsorbent for Cr (VI) removal from wastewater.

Summary Nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) plays a pivotal role in the development of pancreatic cancer, and its phosphorylation has previously been linked to the regulation of NUAK2. However, the regulatory connection between NF-κB and NUAK2, as well as NUAK2’s role in pancreatic cancer, remains unclear. In this study, we observed that inhibiting NUAK2 impeded the proliferation, migration, and invasion of pancreatic cancer cells while triggering apoptosis. NUAK2 overexpression partially resisted apoptosis and reversed the inhibitory effects of the NF-κB inhibitor. NF-κB transcriptionally regulated NUAK2 transcription by binding to the promoter region of NUAK2. Mechanistically, NUAK2 knockdown remarkably reduced the expression levels of p -SMAD2/3 and SMAD2/3, resulting in decreased nuclear translocation of SMAD4. In SMAD4-negative cells, NUAK2 knockdown impacted FAK signaling by downregulating SMAD2/3. Moreover, NUAK2 knockdown heightened the sensitivity of pancreatic cancer cells to gemcitabine, suggesting that NUAK2 inhibitors could be a promising strategy for pancreatic cancer treatment.

Composite ceramics, which integrate the advantages of multiple crystal structures, are considered promising candidates for nuclear waste forms capable of simultaneously immobilizing various radionuclides. In this study, a series of 0.4Sr 0.5 Zr 2 (PO 4 ) 3 –0.6Ce 1- x Nd x PO 4 composite ceramics were designed to co-immobilize the simulated fission product Sr and actinide surrogates Ce and Nd. These composite ceramics exhibited homogeneous phase distribution and high densification. Among them, the irradiation-induced damage in the representative sample, 0.4Sr 0.5 Zr 2 (PO 4 ) 3 –0.6Ce 0.6 Nd 0.4 PO 4 composite ceramic, was systematically evaluated under both He 2+ and Xe 20+ irradiation. After He 2+ irradiation, the crystallinity of the irradiated layer was retained despite the disruption of Raman-active bonding groups by point defects. Notably, the Ce 0.6 Nd 0.4 PO 4 phase exhibited significantly higher resistance to He 2+ irradiation than the Sr 0.5 Zr 2 (PO 4 ) 3 phase, as confirmed by GIXRD patterns and geometric phase analysis (GPA). Furthermore, fragmentation of Ce 0.6 Nd 0.4 PO 4 grains was observed, which was attributed to defect accumulation, the thermal spike effect, and the thermal expansion mismatch. Following Xe 20+ irradiation, the irradiated layer of the composite ceramic exhibited reduced crystallinity without complete amorphization, while the Raman-active bonding groups remained largely intact. Additionally, pore formation at grain boundaries was likely caused by the segregation and accumulation of irradiation-induced defects.

Doping the light absorber layer of antimony chalcogenides with extrinsic ions is an effective approach for improving their photovoltaic quality. These dopant ions generally reside at positions other than the crystal lattice or form an alloy (e.g., AgSb(S,Se) 3 ) with a poor device performance. Therefore, incorporating such ions into an antimony chalcogenide lattice such that there is a positive influence on device quality would be highly useful. Herein, doping of Nd 3+ for Sb 2 (S,Se) 3 is carried out via a modified hydrothermal deposition process. Notably, these ions are incorporated into the crystal lattice and migrate to the CdS/Sb 2 (S,Se) 3 interface after doping, which are characterized using X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry. Nd 3+ doping produces benign effects on the crystal orientation, film morphology, optoelectronic properties, and defect passivation of the Sb 2 (S,Se) 3 films. Consequently, all the photoelectrical parameters of Sb 2 (S,Se) 3 solar cells doped with Nd 3+ are enhanced, delivering a remarkable efficiency of 8.24 %. Furthermore, the best device stored in air only shows a slight decrease in efficiency in the 2400-h aging test. Overall, this study provides an effective doping strategy to improve the photovoltaic quality of Sb 2 (S,Se) 3 films.

A novel poly[1-vinyl-3-benzyltriethylammonium proline ionic liquid] membrane(PIL/PVDF membrane) were prepared through the blending poly[1-vinyl-3-benzyltriethylammonium proline ionic liquid](P[Pro][TEA])-poly(vinylidene fluoride)(PVDF) phase inversion method. A series of PIL/PVDF membrane characterization (NMR, FT-IR, SEM, EDS, and XPS) was performed. The properties of PIL/PVDF membrane (contact angle, water flux, mechanical properties, thermal stability, electric charge property, specific surface area and pore diameter) were evaluated. A solid phase extraction − high performance liquid chromatography (SPE-HPLC) method for separation/analysis of quercetin was developed. The factors affecting the adsorption and elution (time, dosage, pH etc.) were investigated. Under optimal conditions, the method has been successfully applied to the separation/analysis of quercetin in tea, and the recovery rates are satisfactory (86.4–106.0 %). The concentration factor of quercetin was 10. The adsorption capacity of PIL/PVDF membrane towards quercetin was 22.1 mg g −1 . The extraction mechanism was preliminarily discussed. The established SPE-HPLC method was simple and reliable, which provided application prospects for extraction and detection of quercetin.

In this research, we introduce a novel and efficient approach for enhancing both the antibacterial efficacy and resistance to protein fouling of nanofiltration (NF) membranes, marking the first report of a method capable of concurrently addressing these critical membrane performance parameters. After traditional interface polymerization (IP), NF membranes were post-treated by the antibacterial N-(3-Aminopropyl)-imidazole (ANPI) which can be grafted on the membrane by its amino group reacting with rest acyl chloride in IP on the surface. After parameter optimization of the ANPI concentration, the modified membrane NF-12 demonstrated up to 99% antibacterial activity against two representative pathogens, Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus . Except for this, due to the zwitterionic effect, the modified membrane achieved a remarkable 68.7% enhancement in water flux and the recovery rate of BSA cyclic pollution reached 97.5%. From mechanism analysis, it can be proposed that the post-grafted ANPI brought antibacterial properties to the NF membrane, which was able to kill bacteria attached to the membrane surfaces. Also, the imidazole protonation introduced positive charges to the NF membrane surface, mixing with negative charges produced by acyl chloride hydration, which produced the zwitterionic effect and facilitated the formation of a robust hydrophilic hydration layer, thereby significantly diminishing the adhesion of contaminants.
