The aluminum (Al) foil used in Al/polymer laminated film of the soft package lithium-ion battery (LIB) is widely treated with a hexavalent chromate conversion coating to increase the adhesive strength and durability of the adhesive joint. Given that hexavalent chromate is toxic and carcinogenic, a novel and chromate-free method was developed in this study for surface modification of the Al foil using polydopamine (PDA) functionalization after titanium (Ti) chemical conversion. Ti conversion favors the deposition of PDA and introduces more functional groups of PDA on the Al surface. A novel polypropylene-based hot melt adhesive, MAH-g-(PP/PBE), was prepared by melt grafting of maleic anhydride on the blend of polypropylene and propylene-based elastomer for use as the inner adhesive of Al/polymer laminated film. Then, treated Al foil/MAH-g-(PP/PBE) composites were prepared and their interfacial adhesive strengths were investigated. The results show that the amine and catechol groups of PDA improve the interfacial adhesion between adhesive and Al foil by improving the wettability and interfacial interaction. The peel strength between MAH-g-(PP/PBE) and PDA functionalized Al foil after Ti conversion treatment can reach 3.55 N/mm, which is increased by 322% compared with that between MAH-g-PP and untreated Al foil. PDA functionalization after Ti chemical conversion and MAH-g-(PP/PBE) have great potential to improve interfacial adhesion of Al/polymer laminated film used in LIB package.

In this study, 4,4′-Diaminodiphenyl methane (DDM) was exploited as hardener for diglycidyl ether of daidzein (DGED) and epoxy resin mixture (E-D). The composites were produced by blending with different contents of ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and expandable graphite (EG) into E-D resin, named E-D/A-E composites. Firstly, E-D/A-E blends were analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and DSC to evaluate their curing behavior. The TGA was performed on the E-D/A-E composites to analyze their thermal stability, and the thermal properties of the composites were enhanced by adding APP-EG (A-E) flame retardants. The mechanical properties and the fractured surfaces of the E-D/A-E composites were studied by tensile, impact tests and scanning electron microscopy. Finally, through torch burning test, limiting oxygen index (LOI), vertical burning (UL-94) and micro-calorimetry tests, the influence of A-E flame retardants contents on flammability of composites were evaluated. The results showed that the UL-94 V-0 rating was obtained for the E-D/A-E composites and the composites exhibited a self-extinguishing phenomenon. When A-E flame retardants content reached 9.1 wt%, the LOI value reached 34.5%, and total heat release (Total HR) was reduced by 20.2% compared with E-D/A-E 1.

Rubber damping materials have important applications in modern industrial systems. However, their damping temperature range is low, which is not suitable for the damping demand under high temperature conditions. At present, there is very little research on the damping performance of rubber under high temperature conditions. Silicone rubber has excellent high temperature resistance but poor damping in its application temperature range. In this study, a boron-terminated polysiloxane (PBS) was prepared by modifying hydroxy-terminated polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS-OH) with boric acid (BA). The molecular structure of PBS was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and gel permeation chromatography (GPC) analysis. Rheology measurements revealed that PBS was a “shear hardening” material. Then, the silicone rubber was modified with PBS. With the introduction of boron atoms, boron and oxygen dative bonds with dynamic properties could be formed inside the silicone rubber, which played an energy dissipation role in the process of association/dissociation. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) showed that the loss factor (tan δ ) of modified silicone rubber was greater than 0.3 in the temperature range of 81.5°C–250°C, which was higher than the loss temperature range of conventional damping rubber. The cyclic stress–strain test also showed that the modified silicone rubber still had high dissipation coefficient (DE) at high temperature. Therefore, the PBS-modified silicone rubber prepared by this method achieved excellent damping performance under high temperature conditions.

Excellent conductivity and optimized impedance matching are vital for superior absorption-dominated electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding. An efficient binary electromagnetic filler network regulation method has been proposed. Poly- (vinylidenefluoride)-ferroferric oxide-reduced graphene oxide/single-wall carbon nanotube (PVDF-Fe 3 O 4 -RGC) composite has been synthesized as a layered segregated polymer composite structure by using an electrostatic assembly and hot compression strategy. Binary electromagnetic filler networks have surpassed the obstacles of magnetic materials in conductive networks, and are thereby beneficial for outstanding conductivity and impedance matching. Therefore, a superior conductivity of 1.28 S cm −1 and an outstanding electromagnetic shielding interference and effectiveness of 44.5 dB have been obtained for loading of 2.02 vol.% single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), with an absorption rate larger than 85.0% in the X-band. The enhanced EMI shielding performance is attributed to the regulation of the binary electromagnetic filler network.

Fluorinated graphene (FG) is a derivative of graphene with excellent insulating properties, however, the dispersion performance of FG in organic coatings is still a challenge in anti-corrosion applications. This study aims to propose a simple strategy to effectively improve the dispersion of FG towards enhancing its interfacial compatibility with epoxy resins. FG was modified with amino-containing 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane (APTES) and epoxy terminated 3-glycidoxypropyl trimethoxysilane (GPTMS). The chemical compositions and microstructures of FG and the silane-modified FGs were effectively characterized. Moreover, the corrosion resistance and anticorrosion mechanisms of the epoxy coatings modified by FG and silane-modified FG were systematically studied, and the results showed that the silane coupling agent effectively improved the dispersion of FG in the epoxy coating and enhanced the interface interaction between FG and the epoxy resin, thereby improving the barrier properties of the epoxy coating and preventing the penetration of the corrosive medium. Electrochemical and tribological analyses showed that the APTES-modified FG (AFG) coating exhibited better anti-corrosion properties than the GPTMS-modified FG (GFG) coating, which is attributed to the improvement of its crosslinking density and barrier properties by the reactions between the amino groups on AFG and the epoxy resin.

Dichloroacetic acid (DCAA), one of the disinfection by-products in water, has showed critical harm to human health since it can cause cancer, teratogen and mutagen. Herein, a quaternized hollow fiber membrane was fabricated by ring-open reaction via a facile one-step immersion method, which could fast adsorb DCAA by flow-through adsorption. The obtained membrane with a sponge pore structure, which was quaternized at 60°C in an alkaline solution, exhibited excellent adsorption performance with removal percentage of 100%, life span up to 100 L and treating capacity of 24.8 mg m −2 . Meanwhile, the optimal membrane exhibited the exceptional performance in a neutral test solution compared with acid or alkaline test solution. It was concluded that electrostatic attraction between positively charged quaternary ammonium groups and negatively charged DCAA was responsible for the adsorption mechanism. Additionally, fitting results indicated that the adsorption of DCAA onto the membrane was mainly dominated by homogeneous monolayer adsorption. This work developed a facile approach to prepare a novel quaternized membrane with outstanding adsorption performance, which demonstrated huge potentials in the molecular separation and water purification fields.

In this study, the bifunctional hydrophobic associative polymer of Acrylamide/2-Acrylamido-2-Methylpropane Sulfonic Acid/Lauryl Methacrylate/N,N-dodecyl Acrylamide (AALD12) with better salt resistance and shear resistance was synthesized by free-radical micelle polymerization for use as a drag reduction in shale slip water fracturing. In deionized water, the critical associative concentration (CAC) of AALD12 was 0.23%. AALD12 was determined to be theoretically usable for a shale reservoir within 240°C based on its TG study. Microstructure, viscoelasticity, and shear recovery tests show that the polymer has good drag reduction potential and shear resistance. The reduction rates of the polymer AALD12 and the drag reduction agent RSH-1 in clear water were 77% and 73% (RSH-1 is a commonly used emulsion-type drag reduction agent in the market). At the same salt concentration (K + and Ca 2+ , 50,000 ppm) and flow rate (40 L/min), AALD12 can maintain a maximum reduction rate of about 63%. The drag reduction rate of RSH-1 in K + and Ca 2+ solutions can only be maintained at about 52% and 28%, respectively. In the shear resistance test, AALD12 and RSH-1 were each subjected to three times of cyclic shear in the test pipe. The drag reduction rate of the polymer AALD12 solution can still reach more than 72%. The drag reduction rate of the RSH-1 solution is about 56%. The drag reduction agent has good salt resistance and anti-shear bifunction.

Preparing bio-based epoxy resins with high performance is crucial to sustainable development. However, seeking renewable and flame-retardant epoxy resins with high mechanical properties are still challenging. Here, we reported a facile way to transform lignin derivatives to intrinsic flame-retardant epoxy resins with satisfactory mechanical properties. Two guaiacol-based novolac epoxy resins (i.e., GTEP/DDM and GPEP/DDM) were prepared as alternatives for petroleum-based DGEBA/DDM. The cured GTEP/DDM product showed a high T g of 209.5°C, a high tensile modulus of 3.13 GPa, and a high LOI of 28.6% with UL-94 V-1 rating, which outperformed DGEBA/DDM system. Specially, GPEP/DDM resin possessed more superior mechanical properties (e.g., tensile strength of 73.9 MPa, and tensile modulus of 5.85 GPa) owing to additional interactions (i.e., π–π interactions and hydrogen bonds), and outstanding anti-flammability (e.g., LOI of 31.2% with UL-94 V-0 rating) due to the endow of phosphorus-containing groups. The mechanical reinforcement and flame-retardant mechanisms were clarified based on structural evolution and performance variation. This work provides an efficient synthesis route to achieve a high-performance thermoset, which is a promising alternative for substituting conventional bisphenol-A epoxy resin for use as fireproof materials.

In situ formed nanofibrils, which are formed from the deformation of dispersed phase polymer during the shearing/stretching process, offer exciting opportunities for large scale manufacture of materials with high strength and toughness. However, how the topological structure, especially crosslinking network structure of dispersed phase polymer, affects the structural evolution of nano/microfibrils is remaining unclear. Here, the nanofibrillar morphology of nanofibrillar composite fibers is manipulated via controlling the crosslinking network structure of dispersed phase. By changing the length of crosslinker and mol ratio of crosslinkers, the diameter of nanofibrils can be controlled. The rheological property of the crosslinked microspheres and corresponding morphology of in situ formed nanofibrils confirm that the inhomogeneous crosslinking network shows lower storage modulus and consistency coefficient, leading to higher deformation adaptability of crosslinking network and smaller diameter of the nanofibrils. The distribution of nanofibrils along the axial direction of composite fiber greatly improved the tensile strength and toughness of composite fiber to 74 MPa and 719 MJ/m 3 , which are 45% and 180% increasement compared with the counterpart pure PMMA fiber. The findings in current study provide a new strategy to control the nanofibrillar morphology by increasing the heterogeneity of crosslinking network structure of the dispersed phase polymer.

Traditional formaldehyde resin adhesives can release harmful substances, which endanger human health and contribute to environmental pollution. The development of alternative high-performance, environmentally benign adhesives is therefore of great importance. In this study, we evaluate the effect of several additives on the properties and performance of soy protein isolate adhesive, a bio-based adhesive. Triglycidyl isocyanurate, a chemically cross-linker, 1,3-dimethyl imidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([MMIM]PF 6 ), a crystalline ionic compound, and borax, which is covalently reactive with hydroxyl groups, were added to soy protein isolate to build a dense network structure. The wet shear strength of the adhesive prepared with all additives was 109% greater than that of the unmodified soy protein isolate adhesive (1.34 vs. 0.64 MPa). This improvement is due to the synergistic enhancement of the bonding strength through covalent cross-linking and hydrogen-bonding interactions. In addition, the anti-fungal properties of the adhesive were significantly improved through the use of chemical additives. This work provides a new approach for the preparation of high-performance, antimicrobial, bio-based adhesives, which will be beneficial in the development of greener alternatives to commonplace chemicals.

A one-step method was developed for synthesizing Ag nanoparticles exposed on the chitosan-covered polyamide 6 (CS-Ag@PA6) nanofibers by the in-situ reduction of silver nitrate during the electrospinning process. The bioderived CS was employed as a stabilizer and chelating carrier of Ag 0 /Ag + through its functional groups. CS was also used as a tractive agent to promote the surface migration of Ag atoms owing to its polyelectrolytic properties and immiscibility with PA6. Formic acid was used as the co-solvent for PA6 and CS and the reducing agent for Ag + . It was verified that the Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) with 31.7% Ag 0 were embedded inside the pure PA6 nanofibers. However, the incorporation of CS achieved the AgNPs with an improved reduction efficiency (i.e., 67.5% of Ag 0 ). In particular, the CS nanolayers were covered on the PA6 nanofiber skeleton, where the AgNPs migrated on the surface of the CS nanolayers. This surface migration of CS and AgNP S endowed a significantly enhanced catalytic activity to the reduction of 4-nitrophenol, where the reduction rate constant ( k ) and turnover frequency (TOF) were an order of magnitude higher than that of the CS-free nanofibers.

In this work, three bismaleimides containing cardo and ortho -oxazine structures, with dual advantages of bismaleimide and benzoxazine resins, were synthesized. Their chemical structures were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The polymerization behaviors of bismaleimides were investigated using non-isothermal differential scanning calorimetry and in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Results showed that the inclusion of both, bismaleimide and benzoxazine, provided a new structure with better thermal stability and solubility, as compared to the same type and commercial bismaleimides. The ortho-oxazine functionalized bismaleimide resin exhibited excellent thermal stability up to 440°C, whereas the carbon residue rate reached 73% at 800°C. Additionally, further thermal rearrangement of the internal structure of the polymer at high temperature provided a benzoxazole structure that had better thermal stability. The rearrangement due to the thermal changes was confirmed by in situ FTIR and solid-state 13 C-NMR spectroscopy. Based on the micro calorimetry characterization, it is found that both the bismaleimide and the benzoxazole resins formed after thermal rearrangement have excellent flame-retardant properties.
