Synergistically crosslinked P(NIPAM-AM)/TA-Fe3+/CS composite hydrogel enabling NIR-driven actuation and resistive self‑sensing

Zhibo Zhou,Yunqing Gu,Yun Ren,Zhou Li,Denghao Wu,Zhenxing Wu,Chengqi Mou

P(NIPAM-AM)/CS/TA-Fe 3+ hydrogel integrates NIR actuation and self-sensing. • Optimized network enables a 4.7 s fast response and 104° maximum bending. • TA-Fe 3+ coordination offers a high photothermal conversion efficiency of 27.76%. • Linear resistance-strain mapping predicts bending angles with ≤ 2.67% error. • The dual-function material allows real-time feedback for closed-loop control. Conventional hydrogel actuators often suffer from single functionality and a lack of real-time state feedback, restricting their potential in closed-loop control and intelligent applications. To address this, we designed a synergistically crosslinked composite hydrogel based on poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-acrylamide) (P(NIPAM-AM)), tannic acid-iron ion (TA-Fe 3+ ) complexes, and chitosan (CS). This hydrogel integrates near‑infrared (NIR)‑driven actuation with resistive self‑sensing and exhibits excellent shape programming and multidirectional actuation capabilities. By systematically optimizing the composition, the hydrogel with 0.1 mL of CS solution achieves a rapid response time of only 4.7 s and a maximum bending angle of 104°. Furthermore, at an Fe 3+ content of 120 mg, the hydrogel demonstrates a high photothermal conversion efficiency of 27.76% and an initial conductivity of 2.549 (Ω·m) −1 . It exhibits excellent self-sensing characteristics, with a bending gauge factor of 0.019 and high angle-sensing accuracy with an error of ≤ 2.67%. This work provides a simple and efficient strategy for developing intelligent soft materials that integrate actuation and sensing. A Bis-tetraminobenzoquinone-Sensitized System for Hydrogen Evolution: The Double-Edged Influence of the NIR-Induced Photothermal Effect

Hu Jinying,Zhang Senlin,Huang Zhaohui,Zhan Ruoning,Fang Bin,Xie Xiuqiang,Weng Bo,Zhang Nan

The sensitization of semiconductors with organic photosensitizers represents an effective strategy for broadening their light absorption range, and increasing attention has been paid to the development of organic photosensitizers with a response to near-infrared (NIR) light. Notably, the influence of the photothermal effect induced by NIR on the performance of sensitized semiconductor systems, especially on the generation and separation of charge carriers, remains unclear. Herein, we construct a bis-tetraminobenzoquinone (TAQ)-sensitized TiO 2 system via a facile in situ solvothermal method to enable the light absorption of the composite up to ca. 1600 nm. Under visible–NIR light irradiation, the optimal TiO 2 /TAQ demonstrates a hydrogen evolution activity of 11.25 μmol g –1 h –1 , confirming that the photogenerated electrons produced by TAQ can transfer to TiO 2 for proton reduction. Notably, upon excluding NIR light, the TiO 2 /TAQ composite exhibits enhanced hydrogen evolution performance (up to 26.44 μmol g –1 h –1 ). Thermal images reveal that TAQ generates a significant photothermal effect under visible–NIR light. The temperature-controlled experiments and characterizations suggest that while elevated temperature helps to suppress charge carrier recombination and reduce charge-transfer resistance in the TiO 2 /TAQ-sensitized system, it simultaneously hinders the generation of charge carriers in TAQ. Such double-edged effects ultimately diminish the photocatalytic activity of TiO 2 /TAQ under visible–NIR light as compared to visible light irradiation. This work provides new insights into the generation and transfer of charge carriers from the photosensitizer under NIR light and offers guidance for the future development of highly efficient organic–inorganic sensitization systems.

Boosting NIR Emissions and Thermal Resistance in Cr3+-Doped MgGa2O4 Semiconductor Microcrystals by Energy Transfer for Smart Detection

Zhu Ange,Wang Jiawen,Xia Zhouyang,Qin Fanlei,Li Yinyan,Wang Jianfeng,Bartosiewicz Karol,Li Yan,Bai Gongxun

High-radiant-intensity broadband near-infrared (NIR) emitters are highly desirable for nondestructive testing, night-vision imaging, and information encryption. However, the exploration of phosphors that possess both high luminous efficiency and outstanding thermal stability continues to pose significant difficulties. Among various NIR phosphor systems, Cr 3+ -doped MgGa 2 O 4 (MGO:Cr 3+ ) exhibits characteristic broadband emission. Herein, Bi 3+ ions were incorporated as sensitizers into the MGO:Cr 3+ phosphor system, resulting in substantial enhancements in photoluminescence (PL), mechanoluminescence (ML), and thermal stability. The Bi 3+ co-doping enhanced the NIR PL intensity to 4.0 times and the ML output to 1.45 times those of the Cr 3+ singly doped reference, indicating a pronounced sensitization effect and improved energy transfer efficiency. Furthermore, the emission-intensity retention at 423 K improved from 49.29 to 82.88%, confirming a significant enhancement in the thermal stability of the NIR emission. A broadband NIR phosphor-converted light-emitting diode (pc-LED) assembled by coupling the Bi 3+ , Cr 3+ -co-doped MGO with a blue LED further demonstrated the material’s potential for nondestructive testing, night-vision imaging, and anti-counterfeiting.

A dual-targeting and pH/NIR-stimuli-responsive nanoassembly for enhanced cuproptosis, chemo-, and phototherapy in colorectal cancer

Xiao-Qing Ling,Xin-Yan Zhao,Qi-Yan Lv,Jun-Yang Chen,Hai-Yang Dai,Hui-Fang Cui,XiaoJie Song

Cuproptosis has gained significant attention in cancer therapy. Use of copper-overloaded combination therapy that employs a variety of cell death mechanisms has emerged as a promising avenue in the treatment of cancer. However, integrating different modes in a system with optimal synergy and minimal side effects remains a challenge. In this study, a multifunctional copper ion-overloaded nanoparticle was fabricated via one-pot self-assembly for enhanced cuproptosis, chemo- and phototherapy. Molecular dynamics simulation was performed to study the self-assembly mechanism, demonstrating they assembled into stable nanoparticles (NPs) in 50 ns. The NPs possess dual-targeting capabilities towards tumor cells and mitochondria, and exhibit excellent stability in neutral PBS, while showing responsive payload release under acidic conditions or NIR laser irradiation. Upon reaching the mitochondria, the NPs release their payloads, where accumulated copper ions trigger aggregation of lipoylated proteins, etc. Released disulfiram chelates excessive copper ion to form toxic Cu(DTC) 2 , which induces apoptosis combining with hydroxycamptothecin. Meanwhile, indocyanine green-generated ROS and photothermal effects further enhance cuproptosis for synergistic therapy. In vitro results revealed potent cytotoxicity of the NPs against CT26 cells while negligible effects on normal cells. Furthermore, significant reactive oxygen species generation, mitochondrial membrane potential alteration, increased apoptosis, and modulated protein mRNA expression levels, confirmed the synergistic combination of chemotherapy, cuproptosis, and photothermal/photodynamic therapies. Notably, in vivo experiments demonstrated selective tumor accumulation and outstanding antitumor efficacy (89.5% inhibition rate) with excellent biosafety profile. The NPs provide a novel strategy for cuproptosis-based combination cancer therapy and shows significant clinical translation potential.

Boosting NIR-II/III Luminescence via Fe3+-Ni2+ Energy Channels and Crystal Field Modulation in Monoclinic Double Perovskites

Xiaomeng Wang,Jiaren Du,Hengwei Lin

Blue-light-excitable near-infrared (NIR) emitting materials exhibit significant potential for compact light sources in bioimaging, nondestructive detection, and night vision. However, achieving efficient NIR-II/III (1000–1800 nm) emission under blue excitation remains challenging due to the large excitation–emission Stokes shift and the forbidden nature of f – f or d – d transitions. In this study, we report on the Ni 2 + -doped monoclinic double perovskite Ca 2 ScTaO 6 , which exhibits broadband NIR-II/III with a full width at half maximum of 240 nm and a photoluminescence quantum yield of approximately 21% when excited at 425 nm. The incorporation of Fe 3+ ions significantly improves the photoluminescence quantum yield to approximately 37% through energy transfer pathways from Fe 3+ to Ni 2+ and crystal field modulation. Structural and spectroscopic investigations reveal the presence of Fe 3+ ions at various lattice sites, resulting in localized distortions that facilitate the relaxation of d – d transitions in Ni 2+ . A prototype NIR light-emitting diode utilizing Ca 2 ScTaO 6 :Fe 3+ , Ni 2+ exhibits strong NIR-II/III emission, facilitating the visualization of subsurface damage in various materials, including fruits, capsules, meat, and silicon wafers. This work demonstrates an effective strategy for designing blue-light-excitable NIR materials through synergistic energy transfer and crystal field engineering.

Fabrication of an NIR-II fluorescence-visible indocyanine green-BioGlue for precision surgical adhesion with intraoperative leakage prevention

Feng Xinyu,Liu Ruihan,Zhang Cai,Cheng Ran,Fu Dianxun,Sun Shaokai,Wang Junping,Wang Guohe

Bioadhesives are being increasingly used in clinical practice, but pose significant health risks due to their uncontrollable intraoperative leakage. Nevertheless, there is currently a critical lack of effective solutions. Herein, we propose a second near-infrared window (NIR-II) fluorescence-visible indocyanine green (ICG)-BioGlue adhesive for precision surgical adhesion with intraoperative leakage prevention. The fabricated ICG-BioGlue adhesive based on the non-covalent interaction exhibits nearly 100% fluorescence labeling efficiency and maintains long-term stable NIR-II fluorescence for up to 3 months. During surgery, ICG-BioGlue adhesive enables real-time visualization of wound adhesion in various fields such as aortic dissection adhesion and liver or kidney wound hemostasis, preventing leakage into surrounding tissues. Moreover, the stable fluorescence of ICG-BioGlue adhesive allows effective imaging-guided removal of long-term adhesive fragments in the body when they cause compression symptoms after surgery. Considering it consists solely of Food and Drug Administration-approved drugs ICG and BioGlue, with a straightforward synthesis method and versatile applicability, ICG-BioGlue adhesive holds excellent potential for clinical translation. Our study provides a leakage-preventing strategy to enhance biosafety and promote the widespread application of bioadhesives in clinical settings.

Defect rich Zn-TiO2-x coating with NIR triggered bio-multifunctionality for combined anti-infection and enhanced osseointegration

Jianghui Zhao,Zhaoyang Pan,Ping Liu,Jingjuan Huang,Wei Li,Ke Zhang,Xiaohong Chen,Fengcang Ma

The long-term clinical success of titanium-based implants is perpetually compromised by post-operative infection and suboptimal osseointegration. To address this dual challenge, we developed a defect-engineered, zinc-doped titania (Zn-TiO 2-x ) coating through a two-step process of micro-arc oxidation and subsequent alkaline reduction. This process endows the material with a profusion of oxygen vacancies (OVs), imparting significant absorbance in the near-infrared (NIR) spectrum. Upon 808 nm laser irradiation, this property translates into highly efficient photothermal conversion, which orchestrates a formidable, multi-modal antibacterial assault. The coatings exhibited exceptional bactericidal efficacy, achieving eradication rates of over 89% against S. aureus and 98% against E. coli . This potency stems from a synergistic trinity of hyperthermia via photothermal therapy (PTT), cytotoxic reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated through photodynamic therapy (PDT), and the intrinsic antimicrobial activity of released Zn 2+ . Concurrently, beyond antimicrobial prowess, the hierarchical porous microarchitecture acts in concert with the pro-osteogenic bioactivity of Zn 2+ to markedly enhance the adhesion, proliferation, and osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs). This study presents a versatile coating strategy for endowing titanium implants with dual therapeutic capabilities, opening new avenues for smart implants that actively combat infection and promote tissue regeneration.

Sr2+ substitution engineering of Mn5+-activated Ba2TiO4 narrowband NIR-II phosphors for optical thermometry and deep-tissue imaging

Yutong Wang,Mengxin Chen,Enrui Zhang,Sichen Liu,Hang Zhao,Gopika M. Gopakumar,Ruttiya Chaepratoom,Suwit Suthirakun,Anurak Weahayee,Wanwisa Limphirat,Theeranun Siritanon,M.A. Subramanian,Peng Jiang

The emission peak of Mn 5+ lies in the second near-infrared window (NIR-II) biological transparency window, and it exhibits outstanding application prospects in deep-tissue bioimaging, non-contact optical thermometry, and related fields. In this work, a novel Mn 5+ -activated Ba 1.9 Sr 0.1 TiO 4 NIR-II phosphor is designed and synthesized via a high-temperature solid-state reaction, where partial Sr 2+ substitution for Ba 2+ enables precise crystal field modulation around Mn 5+ ions. Mn K-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy confirms that Mn ions are stabilized in the +5 oxidation state. The optimized BSTO: 0.1 % Mn 5+ phosphor shows efficient 680 nm red light excitation and a characteristic narrowband NIR-II emission at 1190 nm from the 1 E → 3 A 2 transition of Mn 5+ , with a long luminescence lifetime of 184.9 μs and excellent thermal stability. Density functional theory with Hubbard U correction (DFT + U) calculations further reveal that Sr 2+ substitution induces controllable lattice contraction and local structural distortion, which modulates the host electronic structure and enhances the stability of Mn 5+ luminescent centers. Furthermore, the phosphor delivers a maximum relative temperature sensitivity of 2.24 % K −1 via the luminescence intensity ratio technique. A proof-of-concept NIR phosphor-converted light-emitting diode fabricated with the as-prepared phosphor realizes clear NIR penetration imaging.

Noble-metal-free Te-doping mediated band structure regulation of ZnIn2S4 for highly efficient NIR-driven H2 production

Feifei Li,Xinyu Lu,Dongbo Xu,Di Li,Yuanyong Huang,Weidong Shi

Despite extensive efforts over four decades, the development of efficient NIR-driven photocatalysts for solar H 2 production remains elusive. Current NIR-activated systems are limited by inferior performance, significant photocorrosion, and reliance on scarce noble metals or toxic dyes. Notably, NIR-activated systems based on non-noble metals that simultaneously exhibit high activity and long-term stability represent a critical gap. In this work, we present a Te-doping-induced band-structure optimization strategy, whereby Te-doped ZnIn 2 S 4 nanoflowers are synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal method, enabling a narrow-bandgap semiconductor to achieve efficient NIR-driven (λ > 800 nm) H 2 production without noble-metal co-catalysts through Urbach‑tail absorption. Te atom incorporation not only broadens light absorption and effectively narrows the bandgap through the formation of intermediate gap states, but also induces a redistribution of local charges, which facilitates the separation and transport of charge carriers. As expected, the optimized Te–ZnIn 2 S 4 catalyst delivers a remarkable hydrogen evolution rate of 128 μmol·g ‒1 ·h ‒1 under NIR irradiation (λ > 800 nm), which is 10 times higher than that of its pristine counterpart and outperforms all previously reported non‑noble‑metal NIR‑responsive photocatalysts under the same conditions. Impressively, the optimally Te-doped ZnIn 2 S 4 retains a considerable H 2 evolution rate of 8.57 μmol·g ‒1 ·h ‒1 under extended-wavelength NIR light (λ = 940 nm), demonstrating its exceptional capability to harvest low-energy photons for water splitting. This work highlights that rational band‑structure engineering through element doping can effectively extend the photoresponse of ZnIn 2 S 4 into the deep NIR region via Urbach‑tail absorption, thereby enabling efficient H 2 evolution without the need for noble‑metal co‑catalysts.

NIR-elicited hydrogel contraction modulates rheological dynamics for spatiotemporally controlled metallo-drug release to potentiate cuproptosis-driven immunotherapy

Wenpei Luo,Lingyun He,Weiwei Liu,Xin Gao,Long Cheng,Min Zheng,Jianli Ren,Haitao Ran,Xun Guo,Lu Yang

Light-responsive control of hydrogel rheology enables precise spatiotemporal drug release. Light-triggered regulation of hydrogel rheology enables spatiotemporally controlled drug release. • Selective copper ion accumulation in tumors induces cuproptosis and synergizes with doxorubicin to promote immunogenic cell death, activating antitumor immunity. • Enhanced dendritic cell maturation and cytotoxic T-cell infiltration effectively convert "cold" tumors into "hot" ones, demonstrating potent antitumor efficacy in mouse models. Activation of cuproptosis has emerged as a paradigm-shifting therapeutic concept to improve cancer immunotherapy efficacy. Nevertheless, its clinical translation is impeded by the inability of existing delivery systems to achieve spatiotemporally precise copper surges within tumor tissues while minimizing systemic metal toxicity. To address this critical issue, we develop a metallo-drug system (HD-HMCS) featuring NIR-triggered and contractility-mediated co-delivery of copper ions and DOX for precisely tumor-localized induction of cuproptosis-immunotherapy. Upon NIR irradiation, the strong photothermal conversion of hollow mesoporous copper sulfide (HMCS) rapidly raises the local temperature to 40 °C, inducing contraction of the PNIPAAm-CS hydrogel shell. The resulting mechanical squeezing force destabilizes the HMCS framework, leading to an instantaneous burst release of the copper-DOX payload. This process induces the downregulation of FDX1 and promotes DLAT oligomerization, thereby enhancing copper-dependent cell death. Furthermore, this approach not only eradicates tumor cells through synergistic cuproptosis and immunogenic cell death (ICD) but also robustly activates systemic antitumor immunity by promoting DC maturation and CD8 + T cell infiltration. Collectively, this work establishes a novel and programmable paradigm for amplifying cuproptosis-immunotherapy, offering a transformative alternative to conventional metal-based nanotherapeutics and a promising synergistic strategy for precision cancer treatment. Rapid Determination of Palmitic Acid Content in Edible Oils Using Vis-NIR Reflectance Spectroscopy and Deep Learning Models

Ning Su,Huiliang Yang,Qiyun Zheng,Fei Lin,Taosheng Xu

Fatty acid abundance is a key parameter for evaluating the quality of edible oils. This study developed a rapid and non-destructive method for predicting palmitic acid content in edible oils by combining visible-near-infrared (Vis-NIR) reflectance spectroscopy with deep learning models. A total of 1740 reflectance spectra in the range of 350–2500 nm were collected from 87 brands of edible oils, including peanut, soybean, corn, sunflower, rapeseed, sesame, and olive oils. Reference values of palmitic acid content were determined via gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Two conventional machine learning models (SVR and KNN) and four deep learning models (1D-CNN, 1D-ResNet, 1D-Inception, and 1D-Inception-ResNet) were developed and compared using both full-spectrum data and CARS selected characteristic wavelengths. Among the full-spectrum models, the designed 1D-ResNet model achieved the best performance, with the determination coefficient of prediction (Rp2

A renally clearable tumor-targeted probe enabling functional delineation of tumor margins by NIR-II fluorescence lifetime imaging

Jin Zhang,Jiuling Liao,Dong Han,Xingsheng Ren,Dehong Hu,Duyang Gao,Pengfei Zhang,Shengnan Yuan,Wei Zheng,Christopher J. Butch,Bo Dai,Huiming Cai,Yiqing Wang,Hairong Zheng,Zonghai Sheng

Accurate intraoperative delineation of tumor margins remains a major clinical challenge because conventional fluorescence imaging is strongly influenced by probe concentration, tissue heterogeneity, and imaging conditions. Here, we report a renally clearable, tumor-targeted molecular probe, NY-07, for quantitative tumor-margin delineation using second near-infrared (NIR-II) fluorescence lifetime (FLT) imaging. NY-07 is constructed by conjugating a cyanine-based fluorophore with pemetrexed as an active targeting ligand, yielding a clinically compatible probe with excellent solubility, high optical stability, and efficient renal clearance. NY-07 exhibits tail emission in the NIR-II window with a stable fluorescence lifetime of 480 ± 0.6 ps and NIR-II brightness approximately twice that of indocyanine green (ICG) at the same concentration, while retaining ∼70% of its NIR-II signal after 7 days of storage. In vivo imaging demonstrates rapid renal excretion, with strong kidney and bladder signals within seconds after injection and minimal hepatic accumulation. Using cell models, tumor-bearing mice, and patient-derived tissues, we show that NY-07 enables target-specific NIR-II FLT imaging and achieves quantitative discrimination between tumor, inflammation, and normal tissues based on distinct lifetime signatures, enabling precise visualization of tumor margins independent of probe concentration and imaging parameters. Compared with conventional NIR-II fluorescence intensity (FLI) imaging, FLT imaging significantly reduces false-positive signals and improves boundary definition in complex biological environments. This work establishes a clinically translatable strategy that integrates renal clearance, active tumor targeting, and lifetime-resolved imaging for functional tumor-margin delineation, providing a robust platform for improving surgical precision and advancing next-generation image-guided oncologic surgery.
