It was a major challenge to acquire CFRPs with both great toughness and strength . Inspired by spider silk , a biomaterial with impressive toughness, we discovered that introducing highly dense weak hydrogen bonds at the interface can be applied to CFRPs toughening. Highly dense weak hydrogen bonds between the branched polyethyleneimine (PEI) and metal-organic frameworks UIO-66 at the interface of CFRPs were formed by the “bridge” of hydroxyl-rich poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA). The break of those hydrogen bonds could dissipate substantial energy and disperse the stress, the impact toughness of CFRPs with the “PEI-PVA-UIO-66” interlayer was up to 99.53 kJ/m 2 . Compared with composites reinforced by CFs modified with UIO-66 by chemically grafting or by physically absorbing without PVA, the impact toughness of CF-PVA-MOF/EP improved by 45% and 33%, respectively. This means that the highly dense weak hydrogen bonds have superiority for CFRPs toughening. Meanwhile, the interfacial shear strength (100.85 MPa) and interlaminar shear strength (102.44 MPa) of CFRPs were realized by the innovative designed interfacial structure.

Polymer hydrogel-based solid-state supercapacitors exhibit great potential applications in flexible devices. Nevertheless, the poor electrode–electrolyte interfacial properties restrict their advances. Herein, by taking the well-developed polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/H2SO4 gel electrolyte and the graphene film electrode as the prototype, a very simple strategy is demonstrated to improve the interfacial affinity between the electrode and the hydrogel electrolyte by a preadsorbed highly hydrophilic polyzwitterion layer of poly(propylsulfonate dimethylammonium propylmethacrylamide) (PPDP) on the electrode surface. Electrochemical measurements confirm that the charge-transfer resistance on the interface is effectively reduced after modification with PPDP. Consequently, the obtained areal capacitance experiences a 3-fold increase compared to the unmodified ones. Results from electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation demonstrate that more ions can be reversibly transferred on the modified interface during the change–discharge cycles, suggesting that the accessible surface area on the electrode is also increased. The hydrophilic PVA layer shows a similar function but with a much smaller efficiency. The strategy depicted here is highly universalizable and can be generalized to different electrode/electrolyte systems or other electrochemical energy storage devices.

Electrical bioadhesive interface (EBI), especially conducting polymer hydrogel (CPH)-based EBI, exhibits promising potential applications in various fields, including biomedical devices, neural interfaces, and wearable devices. However, current fabrication techniques of CPH-based EBI mostly focus on conventional methods such as direct casting, injection, and molding, which remains a lingering challenge for further pushing them toward customized practical bioelectronic applications and commercialization. Herein, 3D printable high-performance CPH-based EBI precursor inks are developed through composite engineering of PEDOT:PSS and adhesive ionic macromolecular dopants within tough hydrogel matrices (PVA). Such inks allow the facile fabrication of high-resolution and programmable patterned EBI through 3D printing. Upon successive freeze-thawing, the as-printed PEDOT:PSS-based EBI simultaneously exhibits high conductivity of 1.2 S m −1 , low interfacial impedance of 20 Ω, high stretchability of 349%, superior toughness of 109 kJ m −3 , and satisfactory adhesion to various materials. Enabled by these advantageous properties and excellent printability, the facile and continuous manufacturing of EBI-based skin electrodes is further demonstrated via 3D printing, and the fabricated electrodes display excellent ECG and EMG signal recording capability superior to commercial products. This work may provide a new avenue for rational design and fabrication of next-generation EBI for soft bioelectronics, further advancing seamless human-machine integration.

Photoluminescence (PL) sensors based on quantum dots (QDs) are difficult to achieve exact detection in sample waters. In this paper, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) based CdTe/ZnS/CdS QDs and fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) fluorophores were used to build a ratiometric PL sensor. Combining with the homemade smartphone-based PL E-eye, the Cd2+ exact detection can be achieved. PVA was used to connect QDs and FITC fluorophores without unnecessary ligand exchange and purification. For QDs fluorophore, ethylenediaminetetraaceticacid (EDTA) was used on the surface to induce the specifically Cd2+ recognition site. For FITC fluorophore, the PL remains unchanged in this experiment. Thus, the ratio of two fluorophores can be used to provide a built-in correction. The PL changes with the increase of Cd2+ concentrations could be displayed as a visual color change on the smartphone. Further quantitative analysis could be carried out by the RGB value of the picture through the App in less than 1 min The ratio of R/G is linear to Cd2+ concentration in the range of 1–2000 μg l−1 with a low LOD of 0.057 μg l−1 (S/N). Compared with traditional analysis methods, the PL ratiometric method with PL E-eye is portable, rapid, visible and highly selective especially in discriminate Cd2+ from Zn2+.

Phenolic acids grafting enhanced the DPPH/ABTS + radical scavenging activity of CMCS. • CEO submicron emulsions stabilized by CMCS-g-GA showed 60-day storage stability. • Films loaded with CEO submicron emulsions extended shelf life of mango by 5–10 days. Food packaging films with antibacterial and antioxidant properties play a crucial role in the postharvest preservation of fruits. In this study, pullulan/polyvinyl alcohol (PUL/PVA) composite films incorporated with cinnamon essential oil (CEO) Pickering emulsions with submicron droplets stabilized by carboxymethyl chitosan modified with gallic acid (CMCS-g-GA) were fabricated for mango preservation. Antioxidant assays revealed that CMCS-g-GA at 50.0 μg/mL exhibited DPPH and ABTS + radical scavenging rates of 91.06% and 93.40%, respectively, representing 8.46-fold and 10.37-fold increases compared to those of unmodified CMCS. The prepared CEO emulsion, consisting of submicron droplets with an average size of approximately 704 nm, exhibited excellent storage and centrifugal stability, showing no phase separation after 60 days of storage or centrifugation at 2000 rpm for 2.5 h. Incorporation of the CEO emulsion enhanced the antibacterial and barrier properties of composite films (PP/CG-CEO), with the PP/CG-CEO20 film exhibiting the lowest water vapor permeability (3.61 × 10 −10 g/m·s·Pa) and oxygen permeability (3.53 × 10 −10 g/m∙s∙Pa). Room-temperature storage experiments demonstrated that the PP/CG-CEO coating films exerted an effective preservative effect on mangoes, maintaining the postharvest quality, enhancing antioxidant enzyme activity, delaying yellowing, and retarding the respiratory peak. These results demonstrated that the multifunctional cinnamon essential oil Pickering emulsion films have practical potential as eco-friendly packaging for postharvest fruit preservation. Achieving broad effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) with minimal weight gain in aramid honeycomb (HC) remains a significant challenge. This study successfully prepared crosslinked PVA/RGO foam in situ-filled aramid HC composites using freeze-drying and low-temperature chemical reduction processes. By adjusting the GO content, partial to complete encapsulation of the PVA framework by RGO sheets could be achieved, and all samples exhibited a dense framework network structure as seen in the SEM. The [email protected] /0.4Vc foam filled HC achieves a broadband EAB of 12.74 GHz at a thickness of 30 mm. Such foam samples can also achieve effective absorption at 1.19–2 GHz. The foam filled honeycomb further increases the compressive strength to 5.24 MPa compared with pure HC. Obvious overlap between the CST electric field distribution demonstrates that the conductive loss and λ/4 interference cancels are the main pathways of MA. Overall, the PVA/RGO foam-filled HC composites exhibit ultra-broadband microwave absorption performance with enhanced structural compressive strength , which has significant feasibility and application value in aerospace stealth structures.

The widespread occurrence of antibiotic residues in aquatic environments has become a major water pollution concern, posing ecological risks and accelerating antimicrobial resistance. Metal–phenolic networks (MPNs), eco-friendly functional materials formed via coordination between natural polyphenols and metal ions, exhibit broad application potential in environmental remediation. In this study, a novel composite adsorbent (FTN@CS/PVA) was fabricated by uniformly immobilizing MPN structures within a three-dimensional porous chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol (CS/PVA) gel beads through the in situ coordination of Fe 3+ and tannic acid (TA). The resulting material exhibited excellent adsorption performance toward tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH), achieving a maximum adsorption capacity of 95.5 mg/g at 298 K and pH 3. The adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model (R 2 = 0.9963) and the Redlich–Peterson isotherm model (R 2 = 0.9736). The primary adsorption mechanisms involved synergistic physicochemical interactions, including hydrogen bonding, Fe O coordination, and electron transfer. Notably, FTN@CS/PVA also exhibited high adsorption efficiency toward various dyes and maintained excellent competitive and selective adsorption performance even in a TC–MB binary system. Furthermore, FTN@CS/PVA retained high TCH removal efficiency in real water matrices (lake water, domestic wastewater, and secondary effluent from a wastewater treatment plant) and in complex systems containing various coexisting anions or humic acid (HA), demonstrating superior interference resistance and environmental adaptability. In addition, FTN@CS/PVA demonstrated structural stability and excellent regenerability, maintaining over 80 % of its adsorption capacity after three adsorption–desorption cycles in the presence of humic acid (HA). This study provides a novel design strategy and theoretical foundation for developing highly stable and selective MPN-based composite adsorbents for the efficient removal of antibiotic contaminants.

In the quest for sustainable and environmentally friendly materials, lignin hydrogels have emerged as a revolutionary alternative to traditional synthetic polymers due to their eco-friendliness, low-cost, and biocompatibility. However, the inadequate mechanical properties and poor conductivity limit their applicability in flexible energy storage and electronic devices. This work proposes employing a so called multiple freezing strategy to incorporate lignin/ionic liquid into the dual-cross-linked network of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and gelatin (GEL), thereby facilitating the preparation of a multifunctional green composite hydrogel. Through experimental characterizations and theoretical simulations, we elucidated the interactions among the various species. The hydrogen bonds and electrostatic interactions within this hydrogel contribute to its remarkable mechanical properties, high conductivity, and enhanced sensitivity. Leveraging these attributes, we fabricated flexible writing sensors and human motion detection sensors capable of recognizing handwriting and monitoring daily movements. The devices demonstrate excellent stability and anti-fatigue properties, with signal stability maintained after 500 cycles. When utilized as the electrolyte in flexible supercapacitor assembly, the supercapacitor exhibited a specific capacitance of 104.8 F g⁻¹ at a current density of 1 A g⁻¹ , with a capacitance retention rate of 70 % after 5000 cycles. After various degrees of bending and folding, the electrochemical performance remained very stable. This research presents a new candidate materials for environmentally friendly multifunctional hydrogels and paves the way for advancements in flexible energy storage, text recognition, and wearable sensor devices.

This study demonstrated the prolonged benefits of polyvinyl-coated calcium peroxide (PVA@CP) in Fe(II)/nFeS mediated Fenton-like reaction. PVA@CP was prepared by a coating of PVA on calcium peroxide (CP) and synthesized nano-sized iron sulfide (nFeS) was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) elemental mapping, X-ray diffractometry (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) and Fourier transmission infrared (FTIR) techniques. Trichloroethylene (TCE) degradation in various oxic environments (H 2 O 2 , CP, or PVA@CP) was investigated using Fe(II)/nFeS, and the slowest rate constant of 0.031 M −1 min −1 with 91 % TCE removal highlighted the long-lasting effects of PVA@CP. The effect of initial solution pH revealed that the acidic condition was most favorable. PVA@CP system accumulated the least amount (6.34 mg/L) of Fe(III) than H 2 O 2 and CP systems. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and scavenging tests highlighted that free hydroxyl radicals (HO free ) contributed dominantly in H 2 O 2 system while both free and surface-bound species participated well in CP and PVA@CP systems. Moreover, the insight mechanism of regenerated Fe(II) on the nFeS surface was explored by XPS. Both oxidation and reduction of sulfur were discussed and declared that S(-II) was responsible for regenerating Fe(II). The recycling sample checked the reusability of nFeS, and 98.8 % TCE removal in actual groundwater emphasized that PVA@CP/Fe(II)/nFeS is a viable technique. In conclusion, the PVA@CP/Fe(II)/nFeS system is highly recommended for long-lasting remediation of TCE contaminated groundwater.

The spreading and film formation of organic polymer solutions on liquid surfaces are key processes in coating, printing, and interfacial processing. However, the mechanisms by which aqueous polymers regulate spreading kinetics and film morphology are not yet fully understood. In this study, the free spreading of Poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (P3HT)/chlorobenzene solution on poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) aqueous surface was employed as a model system to investigate how PVA concentration, molecular weight, degree of hydrolysis, and temperature collectively govern spreading behavior and film formation. Video recording was used to monitor the evolution of the spreading and front-edge morphology, while step-profilometry, UV–visible absorption spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy were employed to characterize the resulting films in terms of thickness distribution, optical uniformity, and surface roughness. The results reveal that PVA can significantly regulate both the spreading kinetics of P3HT/chlorobenzene droplets and the final film morphology. PVA concentration exhibited a non-monotonic effect on spreading behavior, with intermediate concentrations favoring larger spreading areas and more continuous films. Increasing the PVA molecular weight altered the concentration-dependent spreading window and enhanced asymmetry at the spreading front, whereas reducing the degree of hydrolysis decreased interfacial tension and thereby increased the thermodynamic driving force for spreading, yet the actual spreading rate remained constrained by molecular diffusion, interfacial adsorption, and chain-segment rearrangement. Temperature and a saturated chlorobenzene vapor atmosphere further modulated the interplay among solvent evaporation, interfacial driving force, and viscous dissipation. Under optimized conditions, the resulting P3HT films displayed uniform thickness profiles, consistent optical absorption, and nanoscale surface roughness, and could be repeatedly transferred, assembled into well-defined multilayer structures, and printed onto flexible and curved substrates. These findings demonstrate that PVA aqueous subphase provides a tunable low-shear route for transferable P3HT thin-film fabrication and suggests its potential applicability to other polymer film-forming systems.

Preparation of green expandable biodegradable polymer materials with high strength and toughness has always been the goal of researchers. Although the research of biodegradable polymer materials has made some progress in recent years, it is still a huge challenge to prepare biodegradable polymer materials with green expandable technology. In this study, biodegradable polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), inorganic calcium phosphate oligomers (CPO ∼ 1 nm), and TEMPO oxide cellulose nanofibers (TOCN) were used to prepare composite materials through simple and green process. The obtained materials, due to the high density of hydrogen bonds and coordination interaction, are conducive to the preparation of PVA-based plastics with fracture strength ≈176.0 MPa. The breaking strength of PVA-based plastics after soaking in water for 7 days at room temperature is ≈ 16.1 MPa, similar to polyethylene in the dry state. In addition, PVA/TOCN/CPO composites can be processed into products with the required shape.

This study presents a reusable adsorbent material for industrial wastewater treatment. Double-network interpenetrating gel beads were prepared via condensation reaction and hydrogen bonding between sodium alginate and collagen, combined with PVA and ion crosslinking. The addition of collagen enhanced the equilibrium swelling ratio, strengthened the double-network structure, and increased adsorption sites. Optimal adsorption of tannic acid occurred at a collagen/PVA mass ratio of 1:2, achieving a maximum capacity of 261.53 mg/g and a removal rate of 78.46%. Influenced by multiple factors, the adsorption process followed pseudo-second-order kinetics, indicating chemisorption dominance. The beads maintained good adsorption capacity and structural stability over four adsorption–desorption cycles, demonstrating excellent reusability.
