Highly potential-resolved anodic electrochemiluminescence multiplexing immunoassay with CuInS2@ZnS nanocrystals and [Ru(bpy)2(dcbpy)]2+ as emitters

Zhipeng Li,Shuo Wu,Guizheng Zou

Discriminating the electrochemiluminescence (ECL) of differed luminophores is crucial for ECL multiplexing. However, because of the limited potential window for ECL assay and the overlapped triggering-potential-range between different luminophores, the potential-resolved ECL multiplexing with good resolutions ( R s ) is still a great challenge. Herein, a single anodic ECL from two luminophores in the aqueous solution was discriminated completely (baseline separation, R s  ≥ 1.5) in a potential-resolved way with the water-soluble CuInS 2 @ZnS ( [email protected] ) nanocrystals (NCs) and [Ru(bpy) 2 (dcbpy)] 2+ as luminophores and N 2 H 4 as the co-reactant. N 2 H 4 could be electrochemically oxidized to reducing radicals and then reacted with the electrochemically oxidized [email protected] NCs and [Ru(bpy) 2 (dcbpy)] 2+ in sequence to produce co-reactant ECL. The potential-resolved ECL of [email protected] NCs/N 2 H 4 and [Ru(bpy) 2 (dcbpy)] 2+ /N 2 H 4 could be well defined and distinguished from each other upon potential scanning ( R s  = 2.60) and utilized for simultaneously determining human prostate specific antigen and carcinoma antigen 125 at the pathological cut-off concentration ( R s  = 1.56).

An ultrasensitive photoelectrochemical biosensor based on [Ru(dcbpy)2dppz]2+/Rose Bengal dyes co-sensitized fullerene for DNA detection

Haihua Wang,Mengjie Li,Yingning Zheng,Tao Hu,Yaqin Chai,Ruo Yuan

Though preferable progresses have been achieved to improve the photoelectric performance of fullerene (C 60 NPs) by sensitized structure in photoelectrochemical (PEC) field, further application inevitably suffers from the inherent scarcities of heavy metal-involved quantum dots as sensitizers containing restricted sensitization effect, complex preparation and biological toxicity. In this work, a PEC biosensor based on [Ru(dcbpy) 2 dppz] 2+ /Rose Bengal dyes co-sensitized C 60 NPs was constructed for ultrasensitive DNA (a fragment sequence of p53 gene) detection. With the merits of low toxicity and accessible operation, [Ru(dcbpy) 2 dppz] 2+ /Rose Bengal dyes exhibited a further sensitization efficiency towards C 60 NPs. Through modifying wide band gap C 60 NPs with two narrower band gap dyes ([Ru(dcbpy) 2 dppz] 2+ and Rose Bengal) to form a cascade-type energy band structure , the photoelectric conversion of C 60 NPs was significantly improved and the visible light absorption was markedly promoted, leading to an exceptional photocurrent signal. Additionally, Nt.BstNB I enzyme-assisted target recycling amplification was employed to convert a limited quantity of target to numerous SiO 2 NPs-labeled DNA sequences (the signal quencher), resulting in a sharp decrement of photocurrent since a dramatic increment of steric hindrance on the modified electrode surface, which was performed to quantitatively estimate target. The proposed PEC biosensor for DNA detection possessed a wide linear range from 0.1 fM to 1 nM with a calculated detection limit of 37 aM. This work opened up an intriguing avenue for determination of various targets such as DNAs, microRNAs and proteins, and exhibited desirable application potential in the clinic researches, cancer therapies and other related subjects.

Enhanced electrochemiluminescence based on Ru(bpy)32+-doped silica nanoparticles and graphene composite for analysis of melamine in milk

Limin Zhou,Jianshe Huang,Lu Yang,Libo Li,Tianyan You

A sensitive electrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensor for melamine analysis was fabricated based on Ru(bpy) 3 2+ -doped silica (Ru(bpy) 3 2+ @SiO 2 ) nanoparticles and graphene composite. Spherical Ru(bpy) 3 2+ @SiO 2 nanoparticles with uniform size about 55   nm were prepared by the reverse microemulsion method. Since per Ru(bpy) 3 2+ @SiO 2 nanoparticle encapsulated a great deal of Ru(bpy) 3 2+ , the ECL intensity has been greatly enhanced, which resulted in high sensitivity. Due to its extraordinary electric conductivity, graphene improved the conductivity and accelerated the electron transfer rate. In addition, graphene could work as electronic channel improving the efficient luminophor amount participating in the ECL reaction, which further enhanced the ECL signal. This proposed sensor was used to melamine analysis and the ECL intensity was proportional to logarithmic melamine concentration range from 1   ×   10 −13   M to 1   ×   10 −8   M with the detect limit as low as 1   ×   10 −13   M. In application to detect melamine in milk, satisfactory recoveries could be obtained, which indicated this sensor having potential application in melamine analysis in real samples.

In-situ H2/O2 separation in photocatalytic water splitting by hydrogen spillover-driven hydrogen storage on Ru/WO3-MWCNTs

Mengyan Duan,Long Cao,Ni Wang,Jianxin Liu,Lulu Zhang,Jiancheng Wang

Photocatalytic water splitting is hindered by flammable H 2 /O 2 cogeneration and energy-intensive post-separation. Herein, a Ru/WO 3 -MWCNTs ternary composite is designed to address these bottlenecks via a hydrogen spillover-based strategy: direct H* storage instead of gaseous H 2 generation to achieve H 2 /O 2 separation. Photogenerated H* from Ru active sites migrate through WO 3 , then is immobilized on MWCNTs as C H bonds for hydrogen storage, enabling exclusive O 2 release during photocatalysis. This composite exhibits an oxygen evolution rate (OER) of 645.28 μmol g −1  h −1 (outperforming binary counterparts) with no detectable gaseous H₂ during irradiation, alongside a stable H₂ storage capacity of 2.23 wt%. The stored hydrogen is thermally releasable, and the entire cycle of photocatalytic water splitting (hydrogen storage with O 2 evolution) and thermal H 2 release maintains excellent cyclic stability. This work establishes hydrogen storage-aided in-situ H 2 /O 2 separation as a universal strategy for addressing the core bottlenecks in photocatalytic water splitting.

Regulating the metal-support interactions of Ru on hollow nitrogen-doped carbon to enhance the hydrogen evolution reaction activity

Qian Changjin,Ma Minjun,Cheng Yanyang,Zhou Yan,Lv Shanshan,Li Feng,Yang Xiaobo,Wu Qikang,Wang Jin,Chen Zheng

The metal-support interactions (MSIs) play a significant role in regulating the electronic structure of metal species on oxide; however, they are often overlooked on carbon-based supports. In this work, hollow nitrogen-doped carbon (H-NC) supported Ru nanoparticles catalyst (Ru/H-NC) was prepared by a solvothermal method using H-NC as support and RuCl 3 as precursor. Subsequently, Ru/H-NC was annealed at different temperatures (Ru/H-NC t °C) to adjust the effect of MSIs between H-NC support and Ru nanoparticles. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results showed that the MSIs between Ru species and H-NC support increased with the increase of temperature, and more electrons were transferred from Ru species to H-NC support, thus regulating the valence state of Ru. In hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), the as-synthesized Ru/H-NC 300 °C merely requires overpotential of 35.45 mV to achieve 10 mA/cm 2 at low Ru mass loading of 24.03 µg/cm 2 on the glassy carbon electrode. The cyclic voltammetry test revealed that the electrochemically active surface area increased first and then decreased with the increasing MSIs. Moreover, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy results showed that HER kinetics of Ru/H-NC t °C catalysts increased first and then decreased with the MSIs enhancement. The density functional theory calculations confirmed that the MSIs effectively optimize the adsorption strength of the key intermediates (H*, HO*) on Ru clusters, and thus greatly improve the catalytic performance of Ru/H-NC in HER.

Sequential hydrogenation of nitroaromatics to alicyclic amines via highly-dispersed Ru–Pd nanoparticles anchored on air-exfoliated C3N4 nanosheets

Jiale Wu,Liguo Wang,Shuang Xu,Yan Cao,Ziqiang Han,Huiquan Li

Developing efficient and green catalytic systems is highly desired in the syntheses of alicyclic amines via hydrogenation of nitroaromatics. Herein, we developed Ru–Pd dual active site catalysts in which Ru and Pd species were anchored and highly dispersed on air-exfoliated carbon nitride (Ru–Pd/C3N4-air). As-prepared catalysts were employed in the hydrogenation of nitrobenzene (NB) to cyclohexylamine (CHA). Compared with single Ru or Pd based catalysts, Ru–Pd dual active site catalysts obtained a higher CHA production rate of 26.7 mol CHA mol−1 Ru·Pd h−1 at 80 °C and 3 MPa H2. The activation energy for the hydrogenation of the nitro group and benzene ring was calculated as 26.26 kJ mol−1 and 66.30 kJ mol−1, respectively. Intrinsic kinetic studies demonstrated that Pd was the dominant metal for hydrogenation of nitro group, while Ru was dominant for benzene ring. Thereinto, the corresponding non-dominant metals enhanced activation and dissociation of H2, thereby improving catalytic activity significantly. This excellent performance of Ru–Pd catalysts could be attributed to highly dispersed Ru–Nx and Pd–Nx at a nanoscale distance, which was conducive to metal-assisted hydrogenation. Stability investigation showed that the performance of Ru–Pd catalysts could be essentially maintained at a high level. Additionally, the substrate scope could be successfully extended to hydrogenation of other nitroaromatics with different substituents.

Efficient depolymerization of lignin through microwave-assisted Ru/C catalyst cooperated with metal chloride in methanol/formic acid media

Shao Lupeng,Wang Chao,Liu Yu,Wang Meng,Wang Luyan,Xu Feng

Lignin, an abundant aromatic biopolymer, has the potential to produce various biofuels and chemicals through biorefinery activities and is expected to benefit the future circular economy. Microwave-assisted efficient degradation of lignin in methanol/formic acid over Ru/C catalyst cooperated with metal chloride was investigated, concerning the effect of type and dosage of metal chloride, dosage of Ru/C, reaction temperature, and reaction time on depolymerized product yield and distribution. Results showed that 91.1 wt% yield of bio-oil including 13.4 wt% monomers was obtained under the optimum condition. Yields of guaiacol-type compounds and 2,3-dihydrobenzofuran were promoted in the presence of ZnCl2. Formic acid played two roles: (1) acid-catalyzed cleavage of linkages; (2) acted as an in situ hydrogen donor for hydrodeoxygenation in the presence of Ru/C. A possible mechanism for lignin degradation was proposed. This work will provide a beneficial approach for efficient depolymerization of lignin and controllable product distribution.

Ru Single Atoms on One-Dimensional CF@g-C3N4 Hierarchy as Highly Stable Catalysts for Aqueous Levulinic Acid Hydrogenation

Ying Yang,Suoying Zhang,Lin Gu,Shijie Hao

Herein, we report a stable catalyst with Ru single atoms anchored on a one-dimensional carbon fiber@graphitic carbon nitride hierarchy, by assembling wet wipes composed of fiber-derived carbon fiber (CF), melamine-derived graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) and RuCl3 before NaBH4 reduction. The atomically dispersed Ru species (3.0 wt%) are tightly attached via N-coordination provided by exterior g-C3N4 nanosheets, and further stabilized by the interior mesoporous CF. The obtained CF@g-C3N4–Ru SAs catalyst can be cycled six times without notable leaching of Ru or loss of GVL yield in the acidic media. This catalyst is more stable than Ru nanoparticles supported on CF@g-C3N4, as well as Ru single atoms anchored on CF and g-C3N4, and proves to be one of the most efficient metal catalysts for aqueous LA hydrogenation to γ-valerolactone (GVL). The isolated Ru atoms by strong N-coordination, and their enhanced electron/mass transfer afforded by the one-dimensional hierarchy, can be responsible for the excellent durability of CF@g-C3N4–Ru SAs under harsh reaction conditions. Keywords:Ru single atom;one-dimensional hierarchy;levulinic acid;γ-valerolactone;stability

Dehydrogenation of Glycerol for CO2 Reduction in One-Pot Production of Lactic Acid and Formic Acid with Ru-MACHO

Mengyu Jin,Chenlu Wang,Xin Song,Yuanbo Song,Zheng Shen,Yalei Zhang

Graphical Ru-MACHO catalysts can simultaneously satisfy parallel reactions because of having the outstanding ability to dehydrogenate glycerol into LA and hydrogenate CO 2 into FA under conditions of 200 °C and 48 h. Dehydrogenation of glycerol for CO 2 reduction can simultaneously produce lactic acid (LA) and formic acid (FA) products with high added value, greatly improving the atomic economy and the actual benefits. We report that Ru-MACHO (regR) as a catalyst can satisfy the requirements of parallel reaction at the same time. The designed experiment confirms that under the conditions of 200 °C and 48 h, 3 mg Ru-MACHO (regR) catalyst can obtain FA and LA yields of 40 % and 45 %, respectively. The possible reaction path of glycerol dehydrogenation for CO 2 reduction is confirmed by the isotopic tracer technique and nuclear magnetic resonance analysis.

Boosting the Catalytic Activity and Stability of Ru Metal Clusters in Hydrodeoxygenation of Guaiacol through MWW Zeolite Pore Constraints

Ping He,Qisong Yi,Huawei Geng,Yuanchao Shao,Meng Liu,Zhijie Wu,Wenhao Luo,Yuanshuai Liu,Valentin Valtchev

Liquid-phase hydrodeoxygenation (HDO), catalyzed by metal or metal-acid sites, provides an effective catalytic strategy to remove oxygen-containing functionalities of lignin-derived phenolic compounds on the route to fuels and chemicals. Developing the catalyst with high activity and stability is crucial for such a chemical process but still remains a significant challenge. In this contribution, highly dispersed subnanometric Ru metal clusters (<1.5 nm) encapsulated in the cavities of MWW zeolites, including HMCM-22 and its siliceous analog ITQ-1, have been developed for the HDO of guaiacol, an important lignin-derived phenolic monomer, in an apolar liquid phase under mild conditions (160 °C, 3 MPa H2). We validate the effective encapsulation of Ru metal clusters in ITQ-1 and HMCM-22 zeolite cavities via complementary characterization methods. The detailed reaction pathways of the HDO of guaiacol are depicted by using guaiacol, phenol, and anisole as reactants. The subnanometric Ru metal clusters confined in MWW zeolite thin layers (20–30 nm in thickness) show remarkable enhancement in HDO activity compared to the large metal particles. The close proximity between Ru metal clusters and Brønsted acid sites (BAS) confined in zeolite constraints delivers a synergistic effect, leading to an additional enhancement in catalytic activity as well as product selectivity. The super stability of the ultrafine Ru metal clusters against sintering and leaching after successive catalytic runs is achieved. The well-defined mono- or bifunctional Ru-containing MWW zeolite catalysts enable the fundamental understanding of HDO of lignin-derived phenolic compounds in the apolar liquid phase and also provide a prototype for the design of superior catalysts for other energy-related transformations.

Ru/SiO2 Catalyst for Highly Selective Hydrogenation of Dimethyl Malate to 1,2,4-Butanetriol at Low Temperatures in Aqueous Solvent

Yu Pei,Jiang Junxiang,Chen Can,Wang Zhong,Wang Da,Li Guangci,Li Xuebing

Catalytic selective hydrogenation of esterified malic acid to produce 1,2,4-butanetriol (1,2,4-BT) using H 2 as the reducing reagent suffers from the low 1,2,4-BT selectivity. Here, Ru/SiO 2 catalyst was employed for selective hydrogenation of dimethyl malate (DM) to produce 1,2,4-BT, which gave abnormal high DM conversion (100%) and 1,2,4-BT selectivity (92.4%) in aqueous solvent at 363 K, especially, the 1,2,4-BT yield even is higher than the optimal catalyst reported (Ru-Re, 79.8%). The reaction pathways for the DM hydrogenation on Ru/SiO 2 were also proposed, suggesting that extremely high 1,2,4-BT selectivity require for the much high hydrogenation rates at low temperatures, where side-reaction transesterification rates are relatively low. The extremely high hydrogenation activity and 1,2,4-BT selectivity on Ru/SiO 2 in aqueous solvent at low temperatures arise from that H 2 O may coordinate to Ru 2+ and prevent the reduction of Ru 2+ to Ru under high H 2 pressure. Ru/SiO 2 surface presents abundant Ru 2+ in aqueous solvent, can activate H 2 through heterolytic cleavage mode to form hydride, which can significantly increase hydrogenation rates of C = O groups at low temperatures. In addition, the activity and 1,2,4-BT selectivity on Ru/SiO 2 catalyst only reduced by 2.3% and 2.6%, respectively over a period of 550 h. Graphical Abstract

Ru ions enhancing the interface bonding between the Pt nanoparticle catalyst and perovskite support for super anti-sintering performance

Siran Zhang,Wei Zhou,Jianing Mao,Kang An,Ningyan Li,Tian Qin,Liwei Chen,Xi Liu,Bingbao Mei,Zheng Jiang,Zhong-Li Wang,Yusuke Yamauchi,Yuan Liu

Supported noble metal catalysts are widely applied in energy and environmental catalytic reactions; however, noble metal particles are prone to sintering under reaction conditions. Herein, we demonstrate that the introduction of Ru ions in the LaNiO3 perovskite support produces strong interface bonding between the Pt nanoparticle catalyst and LaNiO3 support, resulting in super anti-sintering performance of the Pt nanoparticle catalyst. A novel method is developed to synthesize the supported noble metal catalysts by doping Pt and Ru ions into the lattice of LaNiO3 and then reduction in a hydrogen atmosphere. The different formation energies of both metal ions in the LaNiO3 lattice induce selective reduction of Pt ions to generate Pt nanoparticles, while Ru ions remained in the LaNiO3 support. Using CO oxidation as a probe reaction, we find that supported Pt nanoparticles on Ru doped LaNiO3 hardly change after undergoing a high temperature of 600 °C for 250 h, and the average particle size only increases from 2.1 to 2.4 nm; moreover, the high catalytic activity is maintained. In contrast, without Ru ions, the Pt particles grow from 2.9 to 10.9 nm, and the activity decreases significantly. Experimental and theoretical evidence indicates that Ru ions not only form stable Pt–O–Ru ionic bonds but also enhance the Pt–O bonding on LaNiO3.
