Graphene caging core-shell Si@Cu nanoparticles anchored on graphene sheets for lithium-ion battery anode with enhanced reversible capacity and cyclic performance

Yu Yang,Hui-Xian Yang,Ya-Qian Wu,Hao Pu,Wen-Jie Meng,Rui-Ze Gao,Dong-Lin Zhao

With the large-scale practical application of electric vehicles and mobile devices, more and more attention has been focused on the research of high specific capacity lithium-ion batteries (LiBs) anode materials . Novel graphene caging core-shell Si@Cu nanoparticles anchored on graphene sheets (Si@Cu@rGO) anode was prepared by deposition-precipitation and one-step thermal reduction methods. During the preparation, CuC 2 O 4 and graphene oxide are simultaneously reduced and coated on silicon nanoparticles . Introduced copper can enhance charge transfer kinetics of the electrode and suppress the tight cluster of Si nanoparticles . Besides, the graphene nanocage outside Si@Cu nanoparticle restricts polarization and pulverization of silicon inside itself. Graphene provides not only buffering space for core-shell Si@Cu nanoparticles to expand but also a conductive network to enhance the electronic conductivity and flexibility of the electrode. Therefore, the synergism of copper shells and graphene sheets improved electrochemical performance . The Si@Cu@rGO composites exhibited the reversible capacity of 2095.2 mAh g −1 at 200 mA g −1 after 50 cycles, showing extraordinary electrochemical performance. This outstanding Si@Cu@rGO anode becomes an ideal candidate for superior silicon-based lithium-ion battery applications.

Mitigating Anolyte-Free Si Anode Failure in All-Solid-State Lithium-Ion Batteries via Roll-Transfer Printing Prelithiation and Soft Metal Conductive Additives

Li Long,Liu Dan,Su Qili,Sang Yang,Yang Shan,Fan Zhenhan,Li Zhe,Liu Haijing

The application of anolyte-free Si anodes containing ≥95 wt % micro-Si material in sulfide-based all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries (ASSLIBs) represents a highly promising route toward achieving high energy density. Nevertheless, their practical implementation is hindered by low initial Coulombic efficiency and poor cycling stability, which originate from the rapid interfacial chemomechanical degradation of Si. To overcome these limitations, we incorporate lithium-active soft metals (e.g., In, Sn, and Al) into anolyte-free Si electrodes and further prelithiate the composite by a solvent-free, scalable roll-transfer printing technique. It is found that the lithiated soft metals function as robust mixed ionic-electronic conductors, serving as a self-adaptive conductive phase that buffers stress and helps preserve interfacial contact during Si volume changes. This effect helps alleviate stress concentration and preserve ionic/electronic percolation pathways during cycling. Accordingly, the optimized anode with 40 wt % In (PLi-6Si4In) delivers stable long-term cycling. When coupled with a high-areal-loading LiNi 0.7 Co 0.2 Mn 0.1 O 2 cathode (26.5 mg cm −2 ), the full cell exhibits 72.7% capacity retention after 700 cycles at 0.5C at room temperature. To meet practical requirements, we also fabricate full cells with ultra-high cathode loading (39.7 mg cm −2 ) and a negative-to-positive electrode capacity ratio (1.32), approaching industrial specifications, which maintain 81.8% capacity retention after 100 cycles. These findings highlight that combining roll-transfer printing prelithiation with lithium-active soft metal buffering effectively addresses the persistent challenge of chemomechanical degradation in Si anodes, advancing the development of all-solid-state batteries toward commercial viability.

Dual-channel sensing platform based on MABA-Si functionalized core-shell-shell rare-earth vanadates for highly sensitive sensing of Hg2+ and Cu2+

Shuyu Yang,Chasina,Zhaomeng Liu,Lingxiao Bao,Xiangtai Meng,Tingting Yang,Yang Liu,Yang Yang,Yilin Luo,Ying Liu,Wenlong Chen,Xiaowei Zhu,Jinrong Bao

Core-shell-shell SiO 2 @LaVO 4 :RE@SiO 2 -MABA-Si microspheres enable dual-probe Hg 2+ /Cu 2+ detection. • Detection limits of 0.14 µM for Hg²⁺ and 92.96 nM for Cu 2+ with 8–20 min response time. • IFE coupled with coordination governs selective quenching of Eu 3+ (616 nm) and Tb 3+ (543 nm) emission. • Robust performance across pH 3.0–12, 7 days stability, and 98–103.83% real-water recoveries. A dual-channel sensing system based on core-shell-shell SiO 2 @LaVO 4 :RE@SiO 2 -MABA-Si (RE = Eu, Tb) microspheres was developed for the selective detection of Hg 2+ and Cu 2+ in aqueous media. The microspheres were synthesized by grafting MABA-Si onto SiO 2 @LaVO 4 :RE@SiO 2 , yielding a triple-layered architecture (~105 nm SiO 2 core, ~4 nm LaVO 4 :RE luminescent shell, ~14 nm SiO 2 -MABA-Si functional shell). Sensing relies on the inner filter effect (IFE) coupled with synergistic coordination: MABA-Si captures Hg 2+ or Cu 2+ , and the resulting metal-ligand complexes quench the Eu 3+ (616 nm) or Tb 3+ (543 nm) emission, respectively. The Tb 3+ -based probe detected Cu 2+ with a limit of 92.96 nM and an 8 min response, while the Eu 3+ -based probe detected Hg 2+ with a limit of 0.14 μM and a 20 min response. The Hg 2+ system showed reversible "on-off-on" switching with L -cysteine. The SiO 2 shell maintained stable luminescence over pH 3.0 −12 and 7 days storage. Real water tests gave recoveries of 99 −103.83% (Hg 2+ ) and 98 −102.50% (Cu 2+ ) with RSDs below 2.4%. This platform offers a practical approach for dual-ion heavy metal monitoring. High-value utilization of high-silicon magnesite: Mg-Si-Al reconfiguration to enhance corrosion resistance of carbon containing alumina refractories and its mechanism

Mengting Li,Yixin Luo,Xing Wang,Jun Ding,Chao Yu,Zhenglong Liu,Chengji Deng

To address the diminished corrosion resistance of low carbon Al 2 O 3 –C refractories resulting from reduced carbon content, this study incorporated MgSiN 2 prepared by reconstructing high-silicon magnesite mineral phases into Al 2 O 3 –C refractories, and prepared samples at 1450 °C in an N 2 atmosphere. The influence of MgSiN 2 addition level on the phase composition, microstructure, mechanical properties, and corrosion resistance of the material was comprehensively explored. The findings demonstrated that MgSiN 2 in-situ generated flake Mg-Sialon and granular MgAl 2 O 4 ceramic phases, forming a three-dimensional interwoven folded network structure within the matrix, significantly boosting the aggregate-matrix interfacial bonding. When the content of MgSiN 2 was 3 wt%, the porosity of the material was the lowest, and the cold modulus of rupture and cold crushing strength were the best due to the synergistic effect of the generated ceramic phases. With the increase of MgSiN 2 content, the corrosion index decreased from 79.4% to 59.1%, and the corrosion resistance of the material gradually improved.

Rational design of hierarchical Si@T-Nb₂O₅ core-shell nanocomposites encapsulated in conductive carbon matrices for high-performance lithium-ion battery anodes

Xiaochen Wu,Yongtao Zhao,Rui Yang,Jiaxuan Feng,Sujuan Cheng,Ning Liu,Teng Long,Pengchao Si

Silicon anodes for advanced lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are promising due to intrinsic advantages including ultrahigh theoretical capacity (4200 mAh g −1 ), near-optimal Li + /Li potential (∼0.4 V), abundant availability and environmental benignity. However, practical application is hindered by severe intrinsic challenges: drastic volume expansion (>300%), unstable solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) formation, and sluggish reaction kinetics. To address these limitations, we fabricated a novel Si@T-Nb₂O₅@Carbonized-coxial carbon nano fiber composite via a scalable hydrothermal-electrospinning approach, featuring silicon nanoparticles encapsulated in a nitrogen-doped porous carbon matrix with an engineered T-Nb₂O₅ interphase layer. Theoretical simulations demonstrate that the T-Nb₂O₅ interphase promotes Li + diffusion and reduces the energy barrier at carbon/Si interfaces. The optimized electrode exhibits excellent cycling stability and high-rate performance (1030.1 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles at 0.2 A g −1 ; 507.7 mAh g −1 after 500 cycles at 2.0 A g −1 ). Notably, flexible pouch cells maintain stable LED illumination under repeated mechanical deformation, indicating great practical potential. This integrated electrospinning strategy provides a scalable manufacturing platform for high-energy flexible batteries.

Designing new ultra-high temperature phase change materials from the Fe-Si-B system for thermal energy storage density above 1 MWh/m3

Wojciech Polkowski,Paolo Lai Zhong Lo Biundo,Jianmeng Jiao,Maria Wallin,Adelajda Polkowska,Filip Kateusz,Merete Tangstad

New ternary Fe-Si-B alloys were developed as potential metallic phase change materials (PCMs) for application in ultra-high temperature latent heat thermal energy storage systems (LHTES). By a thermodynamic re-assessment of the Fe-Si-B system, three new Si-rich (approx. 40–50 wt%) compositions were pre-selected for further analyses. The new alloys can provide very high energy density (even above 1 MWh/m 3 ) at melting temperatures around 1150–1200 °C. Furthermore, new PCM candidates have twice lower B content than already developed Fe-26Si-9B alloy, what is beneficial from the economic point of view. For the sake of experimental validation, the PCM candidates were produced by the arc melting technique. The outputs of thermodynamic calculations were verified in detailed microstructural studies and differential scanning calorimetry experiments. In the case of the newly developed Fe-46Si-5B and already designed Fe-26Si-9B alloy, the energy density higher than 1 MWh/m 3 was experimentally confirmed.

An organic and inorganic composite binder with excellent mechanical property and good ionic conductivity for high performance Si anode of lithium-ion batteries

Lanying He,Lixiang Li,Shuai Wu,Fang Di,Hongwei Zhao,Guangshen Jiang,Chengguo Sun,Baigang An

The theoretical capacity of silicon (Si) is high, which makes it a highly promising anode material for the development of next-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, its severe volume variation (>300%) during lithiation/de-lithiation leads to rapid electrochemical failure, impeding its practical deployment. Addressing this challenge, the optimization of binders emerges as a pivotal strategy. Herein, we developed a composite binder, denoted as CCL, by chemically crosslinking carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) with lithium silicate (LS) using citric acid (CA). This molecular design integrates the rigidity of LS with the flexibility of CMC, yielding a binder with superior mechanical robustness to accommodate the cyclic strain of Si particles. Furthermore, the CCL binder exhibits strong adhesion to the Si surface through interactions between the Si O groups in CCL and the silanol (Si-OH) groups on Si. This coupled with the excellent film-forming ability of CMC, ensures electrode integrity. Concurrently, oxygen ions derived from LS enhance lithium-ion transport, thereby improving rate capability. The CCL binder also contributes to a more stable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) by mitigating parasitic reactions. As a result, the Si/CCL anode delivered exceptional long-term cycling stability, retaining a high reversible capacity of 1192 mAh g −1 after 500 cycles at 2.0 A g −1 . The superior mechanical and ionic transport properties of CCL also proved advantageous in all-solid-state LIBs, where the anode demonstrated a discharge capacity of 1617.4 mAh g −1 at 1.0 A g −1 after 100 cycles at 25 °C. These findings underscore the significant potential of the CCL binder for practical Si anodes and offer a valuable design strategy for future binder systems.

Fe-ZSM-5 zeolite catalyst for heterogeneous Fenton oxidation of 1,4-dioxane: effect of Si/Al ratios and contributions of reactive oxygen species

Tian Kun,Pan Jie,Liu Yun,Wang Ping,Zhong Ming,Dong Yuanhua,Wang Meng

Heterogeneous Fenton oxidation using traditional catalysts with H 2 O 2 for the degradation of 1,4-dioxane (1,4-DX) still presents challenge. In this study, we explored the potential of Fe-ZSM-5 zeolites (Fe-zeolite) with three Si/Al ratios (25, 100, 300) as heterogeneous Fenton catalysts for the removal of 1,4-DX from aqueous solution. Fe 2 O 3 or ZSM-5 alone provided ineffective in degrading 1,4-DX when combined with H 2 O 2 . However, the efficient removal of 1,4-DX using H 2 O 2 was observed when Fe 2 O 3 was loaded on ZSM-5. Notably, the Brønsted acid sites of Fe-zeolite played a crucial role during the degradation of 1,4-DX. Fe-zeolites, in combination with H 2 O 2 , effectively removed 1,4-DX via a combination of adsorption and oxidation. Initially, Fe-zeolites demonstrated excellent affinity for 1,4-DX, achieving adsorption equilibrium rapidly in about 10 min, followed by effective catalytic oxidative degradation. Among the Fe-ZSM-5 catalysts, Fe-ZSM-5 (25) exhibited the highest catalytic activity and degraded 1,4-DX the fastest. We identified hydroxyl radicals (·OH) and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) as the primary reactive oxygen species (ROS) responsible for 1,4-DX degradation, with superoxide anions (HO 2 · /O 2 · − ) mainly converting into 1 O 2 and ·OH. The degradation primarily occurred at the Fe-zeolite interface, with the degradation rate constants proportional to the amount of Brønsted acid sites on the Fe-zeolite. Fe-zeolites were effective over a wide working pH range, with alkaline pH conditions favoring 1,4-DX degradation. Overall, our study provides valuable insights into the selection of suitable catalysts for effective removal of 1,4-DX using a heterogeneous Fenton technology.

Mn–Si synergistically co-doping adjusting microstructures and microwave-millimeter-wave dielectric properties of Y3Al5O12 garnet ceramics: Lattice occupancy and ligand distortion perspective

Senkui Qu,Huan Liu,Yu Jiang,Zhihua Qian,Bing Liu,Minmin Mao,Zhilun Lu,Hadi Barzegar Bafrooei,Yingjie Ren,Ehsan Taheri-Nassa,Feng Shi,Ge Wang,Kaixin Song

Y 3-x Mn x Al 5-x Si x O 12 (x = 0.1–0.5) ceramics were fabricated through the high-temperature reaction method. The effects of Mn 2+ -Si 4+ co-doping on lattice occupancy, ligand distortion and microwave dielectric properties of Y 3 Al 5 O 12 garnet were inquired. Mn 2+ ions successively occupy the lattice sites of Y 3+ dodecahedron and Al 3+ octahedron along with the increase of distortion degree of [AlO 6 ] octahedron. In Y 3-x Mn x Al 5-x Si x O 12 , ε r predominantly correlates with ionic polarizability , average bond ionicity (△ f i ) and Mn 2+ ionic lattice occupation. The Q ×  f is primarily influenced by factors like relative density, lattice energy (U) and atomic packing fraction. Meanwhile, τ f is associated with the distortion of octahedra, bond energy (E), and the bond valence between Y/Mn and O. Ultimately, the microwave and millimeter-wave dielectric properties of the Y 2.8 Mn 0.2 Al 4.8 Si 0.2 O 12 ceramics excel with values of ε r  = 10.89, Q ×  f  = 56,135 GHz@11 GHz (Q ×  f  = 88200 GHz@25 GHz), and τ f  = -39.35 ppm/°C.

Micro/nano-complex-structure SiOx–PANI–Ag composites with homogeneously-embedded Si nanocrystals and nanopores as high-performance anodes for lithium ion batteries

Pinjie Zhang,Lianbang Wang,Jian Xie,Liwei Su,Chun-an Ma

The extremely large volume variation and poor electronic conductivity of Si anode materials for lithium ion batteries have seriously hampered their performances and practical applications. SiOx materials are regarded as ideal alternatives to high-capacity Si anode materials for Li-ion batteries, since the generated Li2O matrix from Li–SiOx reactions can effectively accommodate the large volume swing of Si. Furthermore, micron-sized particles with much smaller surface area always present higher initial coulombic efficiency and tap density than nanomaterials. Based on the above considerations, SiOx microparticles with homogeneously-embedded Si nanocrystals and nanopores were fabricated by magnesiothermic reduction in this work and were further modified by high-electronic-conductivity and flexible polyaniline (PANI)–Ag shell. Profiting from these favorable features, the obtained SiOx–PANI–Ag micron-composites exhibited better cycling performances (with a reversible capacity of 1149 mA h g−1 after 100 cycles), good initial coulombic efficiency and tap density in comparison with SiOx-based materials in other works. This study promotes us to exploit advanced Si- or Sn-based materials for Li ion batteries and preparing micro/nano complex structures for promising applications.

Tri-isolation and tri-conductive Si/CuCo-NC@rGO hierarchical architecture enabling highly stable and fast-kinetic silicon anodes for lithium-ion batteries

Yulong Yao,Wei Yuan,Ke Liu,Donglin Li,Zhenyu Wan,Hao Xu,Chunfang Deng,Wei Zheng,Meisong Xu,Wanliang Yang

Silicon holds exceptional promise as a next-generation lithium-ion battery anode, yet its practical deployment remains hindered by drastic volume fluctuations, unstable interphases, and intrinsically poor electronic conductivity. This work reports a triple-isolation and triple-conductive hierarchical architecture (Si/CuCo-NC@rGO), which enables independent regulation and synergistic optimization of mechanical stability and electron transport. In this system, silicon nanoparticles are encapsulated within a MOF-derived N-doped porous carbon framework and are further constrained by an externally distributed network of metallic nanoparticles and reduced graphene oxide (rGO). This hierarchical configuration simultaneously ensures mechanical stability and enables efficient charge transport. The introduction of graphene effectively suppresses the aggregation of MOF-derived metal species during pyrolysis, leading to the in-situ formation of ultrasmall and uniformly dispersed Cu/Co nanoparticles (∼20 nm) embedded in a highly defective N-doped carbon matrix. This multilevel architecture provides robust mechanical buffering, abundant ion-accessible channels, and a multiscale electron-transport network, while the flexible rGO shell maintains long-range electrical continuity and interfacial integrity during repeated cycling. Such cooperative confinement markedly accelerates Li + diffusion, enhances pseudocapacitive contributions, facilitates uniform SEI formation, and significantly suppresses Si expansion from 151.7% to only 48.6% after cycling. Benefiting from these synergistic effects, the optimized composite delivers a reversible capacity of 1013.2 mAh g −1 over 700 cycles at 1 A g −1 and an exceptional rate capability of 1160.6 mAh g −1 at 5 A g −1 . This work presents a generalizable structural engineering strategy that enables the independent regulation and synergistic optimization of mechanical stability and electronic transport, offering valuable design insights for the development of long-life, high-performance silicon anodes for advanced lithium-ion batteries.

Application of a novel Ca-Fe-Si-S composite for the synchronous stabilization of As, Zn, Cu, and Cd in acidic arsenic slag

Zhang Ge,Yang Huifen,Li Xuan,Zhou Yichen,Guo Song,Zhao Tong

The control of multiple heavy metals (HMs) pollution in solid wastes, especially the co-contamination of As and other heavy metal cations, is of great importance to ecological and environmental health. To address this problem, the preparation and application of multifunctional materials have attracted wide attention. In this work, a novel Ca-Fe-Si-S composite (CFSS) was applied to stabilize As, Zn, Cu, and Cd in acid arsenic slag (ASS). The CFSS exhibited synchronous stabilization ability for As, Zn, Cu, Cd and owned strong acid neutralization capacity. Under simulated field conditions, the acid rain extracted HMs in ASS successfully decreased below the emission standard (GB 3838–2002-IV category in China) after incubated by 5% CFSS for 90 days. Meanwhile, the application of CFSS promoted the transformation of leachable HMs into less accessible forms, which was conductive to the long-term stabilization for HMs. There was competitive relation among the three heavy metal cations, following the stabilization sequence of Cu > Zn > Cd during incubation. And the stabilization mechanisms of HMs by CFSS were proposed as chemical precipitation, surface complexation, and ion/anion exchange. The research will be greatly conducive to the remediation and governance of field multiple HMs contaminated sites.
