X-ray-Responsive Cascade System with Pt/SnO2–x Heterojunction as Initiators: Fabrication and Investigation for Radiosensitization

Yunsong Wang,Nannan Zheng,Shujuan Liu,Shiping Yuan,Kai Li,Jinghuai Zhang,Yishan Gao,Liangcan He,Wei Cai,Shaoqin Liu

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) exhibits strong radiotherapy resistance. A cascade system of Pt/SnO2–x@PDA@CaP-GOx initiated by X-rays was innovatively proposed first to enhance the radiotherapy sensitivity in terms of hypoxia-related radiotherapy resistance. By using the X-ray-responsive cascade system, not only the penetration depth could be ignored but also the advantages of radiotherapy could be effectively utilized. Through alleviating hypoxia and boosting reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, excellent radiosensitivity could be achieved by the X-ray-responsive cascade enzymatic reaction system. Including H2O2 formation, O2 production, and ROS release, a series of explorations confirmed the formation of a complete X-ray-responsive cascade system. In vitro studies on 4T1 cells demonstrated that 81% killing rate could be achieved by the cascade system through DNA damage and HIF-1α regulation to alleviate hypoxia. The tumor proliferation was effectively inhibited, and its volume has reduced to 3% of the original solid tumor in the in situ transplantation tumor model. This work presents Pt/SnO2–x@PDA@CaP-GOx as a highly effective X-ray-responsive radiosensitizer, offering a promising strategy for TNBC radiotherapy.

High-performance humidity sensor: Ternary Cu(II)/SnO2/MOF-303 nanocomposites for wide-range and fast response

L.Y. Cao,S. Qiu,P. Viktoriia,Z. Chen,B. Hong,J.C. Xu,H.W. Chen,M.M. Wei,X.Q. Wang

To develop a high-performance humidity sensor, MOF-303, possessing both micro- and mesoporous structures, was selected as the host material for the sensor. SnO 2 nanoparticles were introduced via wet impregnation, and Cu(II) ions were anchored onto uncoordinated nitrogen sites of MOF-303, forming a ternary Cu(II)/SnO 2 /MOF-303 nanocomposites. The optimal sample denoted as 1-2CuSnM (with a molar ratio of Cu(II) to SnO 2 /MOF-303 of 1:2) achieved a response value of 116.98 over 11-98% RH, with response/recovery times of 16.2/6.3 s, low hysteresis (2.48% RH), and excellent 30-day stability (SD < 0.01) at room temperature. The synergy between Cu(II) and SnO 2 introduces abundant oxygen vacancies for water adsorption, while uncoordinated N sites enable proton hopping (Grotthuss mechanism) and Cu(II) dissociation enhances ionic conductivity, collectively reducing impedance. This ternary strategy is novel in combining protonic and ionic conduction pathways within a MOF framework, enabling a humidity sensor with wide range, fast response, and low hysteresis, key advancements over conventional materials.

Biodegradable CA-based nanofiber membranes with ZnO/SnO2 heterojunctions for efficient emulsion separation and photocatalytic self-cleaning

Zechen Yan,Xiaofang Li,Xiaomeng Zhang,Daqian Zhuang,Qingzhong Xue,Lei Zhu

A CA-based nanofiber membrane with ZnO/SnO2 heterojunctions (d-CA@ZnO/SnO2) was fabricated by electrospinning and deacetylation process. • Efficient O/W emulsion separation performance was guaranteed due to the boosted hydrophilicity, and underwater oleophobicity. • ZnO/SnO 2 heterostructures allowed the membrane to achieve an exceptional photocatalytic self-cleaning efficiency. • Discarded membranes were able to biodegrade naturally, providing an eco-friendly wastewater treatment solution. Organic pollutant-induced membrane failure and microplastic accumulation derived from discarded spent membranes pose severe obstacles to the sustainable development of oil/water (O/W) separation membrane technology. In this study, a self-cleaning and biodegradable deacetylated cellulose acetate nanofiber membrane modified with ZnO/SnO 2 heterojunctions (d-CA@ZnO/SnO 2 ) was fabricated by electrospinning and deacetylation process. Simultaneous stripping removal of acetyl groups and polyvinylpyrrolidone fillers effectively enhanced the surface roughness of the membrane, which greatly improved its hydrophilicity and underwater oleophobicity. Benefiting from such favorable surface properties, the d-CA@ZnO/SnO 2 membrane exhibited outstanding separation performance for various O/W emulsions, resulting in the higher permeation flux (∼ 972.25 L·m −2 ·h −1 ) and separation efficiency (∼ 98.2%). Due to the staggered band alignment of ZnO/SnO 2 heterostructures, the charge carrier recombination was prominently suppressed, which allowed the membrane to achieve an exceptional photocatalytic self-cleaning efficiency with a flux recovery rate exceeding 95% via ultraviolet-driven active photodegradation of organic foulants. Meanwhile, enzymatic degradation tests confirmed that the discarded membrane could be disintegrated into fine fragments within cellulase solutions, which presented a practical and eco-friendly approach for oily wastewater purification without causing secondary microplastic pollution. Win-win strength and ductility of SnO2@rGO/ZK61 composite with interface in a patch stitching way

Xian Du,Jiani Yue,Yuanzhou Yu,Shubo Li,Ke Liu,Zhaohui Wang,Wenbo Du

SnCl 2 ·2H 2 O was applied as tin source to uniformly deposit SnO 2 nanoparticles (1–5 nm) on rGOs by adjusting the mass ratio of SnCl 2 ·2H 2 O and rGO via a hydrothermal reaction. During the hot-press sintering, the Sn and O atoms of SnO 2 @rGO gradually diffused into Mg matrix and formed Mg 2 Sn and MgO nanocrystals along the interface between rGO and Mg matrix with a semi-coherent relationship. The resulting heterogeneous interface structure acts like “stitches” to sew the rGO “patches” onto the Mg “cloth”, which largely enhanced the interfacial bonding. As reinforcement, SnO 2 @rGO caused significant grain refinement in ZK61 alloy, especially leading to a hierarchical architecture with micro-nano grains ascribed to the heterogeneous sites on rGO. The strength and ductility of SnO 2 @rGO/ZK61 composite (UTS of 375 MPa, YS of 344 MPa, and EL of 20.6%) were simultaneously enhanced than those of ZK61 alloy (UTS of 309 MPa, YS of 276 MPa, and EL of 17.3%), which successfully overcomes the traditional strength-ductility trade-off in Mg alloys. This work provides a novel design strategy for high-performance graphene reinforced Mg matrix composites by interfacial engineering.

Multi-gas recognition based on ZnO–Au–SnO2 heterostructure gas sensors and one-dimensional convolutional neural networks

Mingzhi Jiao,Xinyang Chen,Bing Deng,Kaiguo Mao,Chenyu Wen

Monitoring and identification of combustible gases are crucial tasks in fields such as industrial safety, environmental protection. In real-world scenarios, different types of combustible gases, such as H 2 , C 2 H 4 , and C 2 H 2 , often coexist, which makes recognition more difficult. To address this challenge, we propose a gas sensor based on a ZnO–Au–SnO 2 heterostructure. The morphology and chemical state of the material were characterized using scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, which revealed a uniform distribution of Au and binding-energy shifts indicative of electron transfer between ZnO and SnO 2 . Experimental results demonstrate that modifying Au and SnO 2 significantly enhances the sensor's response to H 2 , C 2 H 4 , and C 2 H 2 . By applying a one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1DCNN) to a sensor array, efficient feature extraction of response signals and high-precision gas classification were achieved. The recognition accuracy for gas mixtures exceeds 96%. Furthermore, the lightweight 1DCNN model has been deployed on a Raspberry Pi edge computing platform, verifying its feasibility on small-sized, low-power devices. The system achieves millisecond-level inference and high-confidence predictions, indicating its potential for real-time on-site gas detection. This study synergistically optimizes the gas sensing system from both material and algorithm aspects, providing a feasible way to the intelligent recognition of multi-component combustible gases.

Synergistically enhanced room-temperature NO2 gas sensing via Au-decorated hierarchical SnO2 nanosheets under blue light excitation

Yihui Wang,Ting Yu,Huijun Yin,Shangyi Shen,Zhenqi Yang,Bohui Wang,Xingjie Wu,Honglong Chang,Haitao Zhao

Nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ), a significant atmospheric pollutant primarily emitted from combustion processes, poses substantial environmental and health risks, underscoring the critical need for accurate detection methods. Conventional SnO 2 -based sensors are typically constrained by high operating temperatures and limited sensitivity. This study overcomes these limitations by introducing a novel approach that combines noble metal modification with bandgap-matched light excitation, enabling high-performance NO 2 detection at room temperature. Au/SnO 2 composites with hierarchical nanosheet architectures were synthesized via hydrothermal and impregnation methods, as confirmed by SEM. Their sensing properties were systematically investigated under blue light excitation. Among the samples tested, the 2.5 wt% Au/SnO 2 sensor demonstrated superior performance, exhibiting a remarkable response (149.25 @ 5 ppm), a low detection limit (150 ppb), and excellent selectivity, long-term stability, and humidity tolerance at room temperature. First-principles calculations reveal that the enhanced sensor performance originates from a synergistic effect between Au nanoparticle decoration, which enhances NO 2 adsorption and charge transfer, and the additional photogenerated carriers induced by blue light excitation. This study provides novel material design insights for developing high efficiency room temperature NO 2 sensors.

In-situ sulfidation strategy for constructing SnO2/SnS2 heterojunctions: Achieving highly robust flexible room temperature H2S sensors

Wenyuan Yang,Limin Qiu,Xintong Liu,Tingting Wang,Tianqi Wang,Dan Li,Hui Yu,Ying Yang

The development of portable, low-power H 2 S sensors is critical for environmental safety but remains challenged to balance high sensitivity with mechanical flexibility at room temperature. Herein, we present a hierarchical SnO 2 /SnS 2 nanoflower composite synthesized via a facile in-situ sulfidation strategy, which ensures intimate lattice coherence for robust flexible sensing. The optimal sensor on a PET substrate exhibits a high response of 19.01 to 10 ppm H 2 S at 25 °C, a low theoretical detection limit of 95.38 ppb, and excellent mechanical stability under 90° bending. Mechanistically, Mott-Schottky analysis confirms that SnO 2 /SnS 2 heterojunctions induce a 50-fold increase in carrier concentration. This electronic modulation extends the Debye length (24.4 nm) beyond the average crystallite size (16.9 nm), creating a volume depletion state in ambient air that enables massive resistance modulation upon H 2 S exposure. This work demonstrates a robust flexible sensor and establishes a quantitative criterion for heterojunction design through Debye length engineering.

Defect Passivation on SnO2/Perovskite Interface Using Oxalate-Based Passivators for Efficient and Stable Perovskite Solar Cells

Rana Shahid Mahmood,Weicun Chu,Riming Nie

Tin oxide (SnO 2 ) is a popular electron transport layer (ETL) in n-i-p structured perovskite solar cells, with its excellent charge mobility and longer chemical stability. However, Interfacial defects at the SnO 2 /perovskite interface are still a major bottleneck limiting the efficiency and stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Herein, we introduced lithium difluoro(oxalato)borate (LiDFOB) and lithium bis(oxalato)borate (LiBOB) as interfacial modifiers to regulate the SnO 2 /perovskite interface and control perovskite crystallization, resulting in larger grain sizes and reduced grain boundaries. Spectroscopic analysis confirms strong interfacial interactions and effective defect passivation at both the electron transport layer and the buried perovskite interface, leading to reduced trap density and suppressed metallic Pb formation. The resulting films exhibit lower trap density and suppressed nonradiative recombination, which are reflected in improved charge transport, reduced leakage current, and enhanced conductivity. Consequently, the optimized devices achieve a champion power conversion efficiency of 25.12%, significantly higher than the control (23.42%), along with excellent operational stability, retaining 98% and 95% of initial efficiency under ambient and thermal (85 °C) conditions over 2000 h. This work demonstrates an effective strategy for simultaneously optimizing interfacial chemistry and film quality to achieve highly efficient and stable perovskite solar cells (PSCs).

Specific Cu Active Sites of CuO Cluster Loading SnO2 for Sensitive EMC Detection in Lithium-Ion Batteries

Huiyu Su,Chaofan Ma,Chaoqi Zhu,Jiahong Tang,Lingfei Luo,Kechen Zhou,Xiaoxia Wang,Dawen Zeng

Conventional metal oxide sensors often lack sufficient sensitivity due to limited adsorption sites. Loading clusters is an effective surface-modification strategy. In this work, CuO clusters of approximately 3 nm were highly dispersed on high-surface-area SnO2 nanoboxes. TEM confirmed the cluster sizes and dispersion degrees of the CuO clusters, while Raman and XPS collectively confirmed that CuO modifies the electronic structure of the SnO2 support and induces the formation of new oxygen vacancies. The optimized Cu/SN-2 sensor exhibited a response of 39.25 toward 10 ppm ethyl methyl carbonate (EMC) at 130 °C, which is 1.92 times higher than that of SnO2 nanoboxes (20.46 at 140 °C). The diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) indicated that CuO lowers the activation energy for EMC decomposition, producing intermediates like CO2, methanol, and ethanol at lower temperatures, thus reducing the sensor operating temperature. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirmed that Cu sites act as negatively charged centers, promoting EMC adsorption and enhancing sensitivity. This work offers a simple, low-cost surface modification route to improve gas sensing. Furthermore, as EMC is a common electrolyte in lithium-ion batteries, its leakage poses safety risks. Integrating such EMC sensors into battery safety systems can enable ultraearly leak warnings, helping prevent fires and explosions.

Low-temperature ethanol gas-sensing performances of porous Ag-doped SnO2: Structure-performance correlation and mechanism insight

Yecheng Liang,Jianchun Qin,Shunyan Ning,Jishu Zeng,Zheyu He,Jianing Xu,Kangcheng Chen,Jun Cai,Weilong Zhong,Long Hu,Yimin Li

Ethanol gas detection is vital for industrial processes like brewing and biofuel production, and for safety in medical and transportation systems. However, the response and selectivity of tin dioxide (SnO 2 ) towards ethanol gas still exhibit serious limitations at relatively low temperatures. In this study, the porous Ag-SnO 2 composites were successfully synthesized by using sacrificial carbon nanotubes (CNTs) template-assisted hydrothermal synthesis, enhancing the sensitivity and selectivity towards ethanol gas. Specifically, Ag-SnO 2 nanoparticles were uniformly grown on the surface of CNTs via a hydrothermal method, followed by calcination to remove the CNTs, and obtained porous Ag-SnO 2 composites. The composites demonstrated excellent ethanol sensing characteristics: high response magnitude, excellent selectivity, good stability, and wide detection concentration range. The porous structure significantly increased surface area and gas adsorption of SnO 2 , while Ag doping enhanced surface catalytic activity. This work provides a promising approach for designing high-performance, low-temperature SnO 2 -based ethanol sensors.

Unveiling antimony oxides crucial role on electrocatalytic activity evolution of Sb-SnO2 catalysts during organic pollutants oxidation

Hongtao Liu,Yucheng Liu,Haoran Sun,Hantao Du,Lizhang Wang

Sb-SnO 2 is a low-cost and high-efficiency catalyst, but its short service life restricts widespread use. Enhancing its electrochemical stability remains challenging. Herein, we employed a life-cycle assessment to reveal the mechanisms driving the electrocatalytic activity evolution of Sb-SnO 2 . The results demonstrate that Sb is crucial for maintaining electrocatalytic activity and structural stability of Sb-SnO 2 . Sb functions as a ‘sacrificial agent’ to preserve SnO 2 and further retard the structural collapse. It enhances ∙OH yield in SnO 2 through the Sb 5 + /Sb 3+ cycle, whereas its depletion leads to increased electron transfer resistance and deteriorated electronic structures, significantly impairing ∙OH generation. Additionally, underlying mechanisms related to the transformation in ∙OH presence forms and external passivation synergistically impair the electrocatalytic activity. Combining the structure-activity relationship, we propose a strategy for evaluating the catalytic lifetime of Sb-SnO 2 by utilizing a constructed electrochemical activity coefficient to describe catalyst activity decay. This strategy facilitates the cost-effective application of Sb-SnO 2 in wastewater treatment while evading its potential ion leaching risk. These insights offer an innovative approach to characterizing catalyst activity decay.

Mesoporous Ultrathin SnO2 Nanosheets in Situ Modified by Graphene Oxide for Extraordinary Formaldehyde Detection at Low Temperatures

Ding Wang,Liang Tian,Huijun Li,Kechuang Wan,Xin Yu,Ping Wang,Aiying Chen,Xianying Wang,Junhe Yang

In this article, we demonstrated an extremely high-sensitivity formaldehyde (HCHO) gas sensor, where the graphene oxide (GO) in situ modified two-dimensional (2D) SnO2 nanosheets with in-plane mesopores were utilized as the sensing materials. The sensor response (Ra/Rg) was larger than 2000 toward 100 ppm HCHO at 60 °C. In addition, the selectivity for detecting HCHO was excellent against other interferences including ethanol, acetone, methanol, toluene, ammonia, water, etc. The outstanding sensing performance of 2D mesoporous GO/SnO2 nanosheets was attributed to the synergism of the sensitizer effect of GO, large surface areas of 2D nanostructure, suitable particle size, and abundant in-plane mesopores. The high sensitivity, high selectivity, and low working temperature of the sensor reported here endowed it a great potential in selective detection of HCHO. Meanwhile, the design and synthesis of GO/SnO2 nanocomposites will provide new paradigms in the future development of HCHO-sensitive materials.
