In current work, Ni-Ti-CeO 2 nanocomposite coatings were achieved by co-adding Ti microparticles and CeO 2 nanoparticles. Designed experiments and COMSOL computer simulation were applied to reveal the synergistic role of Ti microparticles and CeO 2 nanoparticles in tailoring the spatial microstructures and properties of Ni-Ti-CeO 2 nanocomposite coating. Unilaterally, the conductive Ti microparticles conducted the growth behavior of Ni grains by current density concentration, distorting electronic field lines and heterogeneous nucleation. Individual domains consisting of inner nanograins and outer radial columnar grains surrounded Ti microparticles, where Ti microparticles acted as seeds. Ti microparticles tended to be aggregated, leading to spatial heterogeneity of microstructures. Ni deposits buried the Ti microparticles in forms of “covering model”, contributing to the formation of inside voids and rough surface and aggregation of Ti microparticles; on the other hand, the non-conductive CeO 2 microparticles hardly changed the distribution of current density and electronic field lines on the cathode surface. Ni deposits buried the CeO 2 microparticle in forms of “stacking model”, avoiding the inside voids and aggregation of particles. The incorporation of CeO 2 microparticle brought in microstructure evolutions only on its top side without disturbing the growth behavior of Ni grains on its lateral side or bottom, suggesting the limited effects. This was correlated with the presence of current concentration above the CeO 2 microparticle at the last stage of burying CeO 2 microparticle. The co-addition of Ti microparticles and CeO 2 nanoparticles into Ni deposits exploited the complementary action of the two particles, which gave birth to satisfied spatial microstructures and improved hardness. Ti microparticles took major responsibility for microstructure evolutions, while the CeO 2 nanoparticles were mainly in charge of the microstructure homogeneity.

In this work, cost-effective, magnetic carbon-supported Fe@Ti composite (Fe@Ti/Cs) with abundant active sites was synthesized by one-step carbothermal reduction of ilmenite with the assistance of microwave oven and utilized as a highly efficient persulfate (PS) activator for the wastewater purification. The coexistence of Fe 0/2+/3+ , Ti 3+/4+ and oxygen vacancies on Fe@Ti/Cs was found to favor for the electron transfer to PS, which facilitate the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Catalytic experiment results showed that the Fe@Ti/C-4 produced from ilmenite/carbon with a mass ratio of 4:1 exhibited the best catalytic activation performance towards PS for the degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB). Usage of merely 0.12 g/L Fe@Ti/C-4 enabled the removal of 94.01% RhB (200 mg/L) within 30 min in the PS containing system, significantly outperforming ilmenite + PS (29.29%) and carbon + PS (49.91%) systems tested under the same conditions. The physico-chemical properties of the produced Fe@Ti/Cs before and after the reaction were carefully characterized. Radical scavenging experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis were carried out to better understand the underlying mechanism. The results indicate that oxygen vacancies in Fe@Ti/C-4 promoted the electron transfer and participated in the transition metal redox cycle to generate ROS in the PS-containing system, which was highly efficient for degrading RhB into small molecules and finally enabling mineralization. This work offers a new perspective for designing highly efficient and stable PS activators with long life derived from natural ore for environmental remediation.

The dual functional implants of antibacteria and osteointegration are highly demanded in orthopedic and dentistry, especially for patients who suffer from diabetes or osteoporosis simultaneously. However, there is lack of the facile and robust method to produce clinically applicable implants with this dual function although coatings possessing single function have been extensively developed. Herein, hyperbranched poly-L-lysine (HBPL) polymers were covalently immobilized onto the alkali-heat treated titanium (Ti) substrates and implants by using 3-glycidyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTMS) as the coupling agent, which displayed excellent antibacterial activity against S. aureus and E. coli with an efficiency as high as 89.4% and 92.2% in vitro , respectively. The HBPL coating also significantly promoted the adhesion, spreading, proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of MC3T3-E1 cells in vitro . Furthermore, the results of a S. aureus infection rat model in vivo ulteriorly verified that the HBPL-modified screws had good antibacterial and anti-inflammatory abilities at an early stage of implantation and better osteointegration compared with the control Ti screws.

In this paper, a Co 3 O 4 - and CNT-doped 3D PbO 2 electrode was fabricated through galvanostatic electrodeposition in a Pb(Ac) 2 -NH 2 SO 3 H solution, and the electrochemical properties were systematically investigated in a zinc electrolyte. The XRD results show that the deposit is a mixture of an α + β phase (a dominant β-PbO 2 phase with a minor α-PbO 2 phase present), and the SEM images show that Co 3 O 4 and CNT have been simultaneously deposited with PbO 2 . The 3D-Ti/PbO 2 -(4 g·L −1 ) Co 3 O 4 -(0.4 g·L −1 ) CNT electrode exhibits a voltammetric charge 5 times larger than that of the 3D-Ti/PbO 2 electrode, which indicates outstanding electrocatalytic activity. The oxygen evolution reaction overpotential and cell voltage are only 394 mV and 3.74 V at 500 A∙m −2 , respectively. In addition, the obtained electrode showed a high current efficiency of 95.3% and a service life of 26 h under a current density of 20,000 A∙m −2 . Hence, this study offers a facial synthesis route to prepare composite electrodes for zinc electrowinning and provides deep insight into the relationship among doping substances, microstructures and electrocatalytic activity.

To improve hydrogen storage property of Mg-based alloy, the Mg–Ce–Y–Ni + 10 wt % M (M = Zr, Ti, V) composites were prepared by the combination of alloying and ball-milling, and their microstructure, phase evolution, as well as hydrogen storage thermodynamic and kinetic properties, were investigated by XRD , PCT, and DSC methods. The result shows that the hydrogenated samples are composed of MgH 2 , Mg 2 NiH 4 and corresponding ZrH 2 , TiH 2 and VH 1.9 phases. In comparison, the |Δ H| value of M = Ti sample is larger than that of M = Zr and M = V samples, and the M = Ti sample has the highest the peak temperatures and lowest plateau pressure, which indicates that Zr and V elements are more efficient to reduce the thermodynamic stability of RE-Mg-Ni hydrogen storage alloys. Besides, the DSC curve of the M = V sample has another endothermic peak which corresponds to the decomposition reaction between VH 1.9 and VH 0.8 , which has a contribution to desorption kinetic property for the M = V sample. The apparent activation energies ( E de ) show an increasing trend in the following order: M = Zr (87.7 kJ/mol) < M = V (89.1 kJ/mol) < M = Ti (99.3 kJ/mol).

Develop Pd-based catalysts for propylene epoxidation with H 2 and O 2. • Sn species in PdSn/Ti-MWW increase the electron density of Pd. • Increased electron density of Pd enhances the H 2 utilization. • Sn significantly promotes the catalytic propylene epoxidation. The low-temperature epoxidation of propylene with H 2 and O 2 to propylene oxide (PO), commonly referred to as the low-temperature HOPO process, over titanosilicate zeolite-supported Pd catalysts is economically attractive and environmentally friendly. However, PO selectivity remains a major challenge for these systems and is comparatively low, because this process is commonly accompanied with propylene hydrogenation to propane. In the present study, a novel and efficient Ti-MWW-supported PdSn catalyst (PdSn/Ti-MWW) was developed for this low-temperature HOPO process, displaying a substantially high PO selectivity. The results on extensive characterizations, in combination with Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations, for PdSn/Ti-MWW and Pd/Ti-MWW verify that the introduction of Sn species into Pd/Ti-MWW can boost the electron density of Pd species while does not affect the coordination states of Ti species and the textural properties of the zeolite. Interestingly, the enhanced Pd electron density will weaken the adsorption of propylene on the Pd active sites, resulting in inhibiting propylene hydrogenation, which is beneficial for the selective production of PO. Catalytic tests reveal that the optimal 0.33Pd0.22Sn/Ti-MWW catalyst achieves a PO selectivity of 68.4 % and a maximum PO productivity of 7.5 mol g Pd -1 h −1 , far exceeding monometallic Pd/Ti-MWW, while the undesired propane selectivity drops sharply. Moreover, PdSn/Ti-MWW shows an excellent stability and reusability as key catalytic traits. Thus, this work establishes an effective electronic modulation strategy for designing high-performance bimetallic Pd catalysts, and lays solid experimental and theoretical foundations for the industrial application of sustainable low-temperature HOPO technology. Developing effective and stable catalysts for low-temperature selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO x remains challenging. Herein, we constructed a hierarchical structure by loading CoMn 2 O 4 onto Ti-doped CeO 2 , that CoMn 2 O 4 /CeTiO x catalyst has shown superior deNO x activity (>95% at 100–225 °C), prominent reaction activation energy (28.8 ± 0.9 kJ mol −1 ) and outstanding stability (>75% at 100–200 °C within H 2 O and SO 2 ). The “low-temperature active sites” and “dual anti-poisoning sites” contribute to excellent activity and stability. Firstly, the hierarchical structure boosts generation of active metal-support interface, which is conducive to oxygen migration (including adsorbed oxygen (O ads ), lattice oxygen (O lat ) and oxygen vacancy (O v )) and metal charge transfer (Mn 2+/3+ +Ce 4+ ↔Mn 3+/4+ +Ce 3+ , Ti 4+ +Ce 3+ ↔Ce 4+ +Ti 3+ ). This is the key to breaking through the limits of catalytic activity stability. Secondly, enhanced surface acidity favors NH 3 adsorption and activation, which accelerates -NH 2 /-NH concatenate with NO x through Eley-Rideal mechanism to generate N 2 and H 2 O. Thirdly, the dual strong SO 2 affinity sites by Ti-induced CeO 2 crystal reconstruction retard the active center affected by the sulfate species, which contributes to striking stability. This work highlights the importance of design of isolated active sites to improve SO 2 and H 2 O endurance.

The application of PbO 2 for electrochemical oxidation technology is limited by its low electrocatalytic activity and short service life. Herein, based on the facile one-step electrodeposition , we prepared a boron carbide (B 4 C) and cerium (Ce) co-modified Ti/PbO 2 (Ti/PbO 2 –B 4 C–Ce) electrode to overcome these shortcomings. Compared with Ti/PbO 2 electrode, the denser surface is displayed by Ti/PbO 2 –B 4 C–Ce electrode. Meanwhile, electrochemical characterization indicates that the introduction of B 4 C and Ce significantly enhance the electrochemical performance of PbO 2 electrode. In degradation experiments, under optimized conditions (current density 20 mA cm −2 , pH 9, 0.15 M Na 2 SO 4 and 30 °C), the fully degradation of tetracycline (TC) can be completed within 30 min. Furthermore, the trapping experiment demonstrates that ∙OH and SO 4 ·- radicals have a synergistic effect in the degradation process of TC. Based on results of liquid chromatography-mass spectrometer, the generated ·OH preferentially attacks amides, phenols and conjugated double bond groups in TC. Importantly, Ti/PbO 2 –B 4 C–Ce electrode maintains a constant degradation efficiency even after 10 recycling tests, and its service life is 2.4 times of traditional Ti/PbO 2 electrode. Hence, Ti/PbO 2 –B 4 C–Ce electrode is a promising electrode for degradation of organic wastewater containing amides, phenols, and conjugated double bond groups.

Aiming to promote the activity of TS-1 zeolite in catalytic oxidative desulfurization (ODS), a general amide-assisted strategy was proposed to synthesize hierarchical TS-1 zeolite with rich and homogeneously distributed Ti(OH 2 ) 2 (OH) 2 (OSi) 2 species. Strong interactions between acrylamide (AM) and Si/Ti as well as self-polymerization of AM in synthetic gels change the zeolite formation process, thus to effectively construct Ti(OH 2 ) 2 (OH) 2 (OSi) 2 , promote Ti evenly distribution and form micro-mesopore structure. The activity of Ti(OH 2 ) 2 (OH) 2 (OSi) 2 was evaluated by ODS of refractory sulfur-containing compounds. The advantages of Ti(OH 2 ) 2 (OH) 2 (OSi) 2 over TiO 4 in substrate adsorption and reactive intermediate formation for ODS were further proved by theoretical calculations. By adjusting AM amount to optimize the Ti(OH 2 ) 2 (OH) 2 (OSi) 2 content and distribution, the obtained catalyst achieves 134.8 h -1 of turnover frequency and 100 % DBT removal at ten minutes, and maintains > 92 % removal after seven cycles at 333 K. This facile active-site construction strategy is promising to be extended to other heteroatom-containing zeolite catalysts.

A new approach for constructing amorphous/crystalline heterophase W-Zn(Ti)O photocatalyst was develpoed via calcination topological transformation of the self-sacrificial WO 4 2− -pillared ZnTi-LDH (WO 4 -LDH) precursor together with in-situ W-doping. The amorphous/crystalline heterophase formation could expose enriched active sites, which promoted the transfer and separation of photogenerated e − - h + pairs. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further verified that in-situ W-doping regulated the electronic structure and reduced bandgap energy, which made the transport of photogenerated carriers more rapid. Benefiting from the construction of the amorphous/crystalline heterophase, the W-Zn(Ti)O had suitable photo-oxidation/reduction activities, achieving 99.7% removal rate for Cr(VI) reduction, 78.1% for TC oxidation, and simultaneous Cr(VI) reduction (78.0% removal) and TC oxidation (63.2% removal) for 120 min under visible-light. This work provides a new idea for the design of amorphous/crystalline heterophase nanomaterials.

Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal carbides and/or nitrides, MXenes, are prepared by selective etching of the A-site atomically thin metal layers from their MAX phase precursors. High entropy MXenes, the most recent subfamily of MXenes, are in their infancy and have attracted great interest recently. They are currently synthesized mainly through wet chemical etching of Al-containing MAX phases, while various MAX phases with A-sites elements other than Al have not been explored. It is important to embody non-Al MAX phases as precursors for the high entropy MXenes synthesis to allow for new compositions. In this work, it is reported on the design and synthesis of Ga-containing medium/high entropy MAX phases and then their corresponding medium/high entropy MXenes. Gallium atomic layer etching is carried out using a Lewis acid molten salt (CuCl2). The as-prepared (Ti 1/4 V 1/4 Nb 1/4 Ta 1/4 ) 2 CT x exhibits a Li + specific capacity of ≈400 mAh g −1 . For (Ti 1/5 V 1/5 Nb 1/5 Ta 1/5 Mo 1/5 ) 2 CT x a specific capacity of 302 mAh g −1 is achieved after 300 cycles, and high cycling stability is observed at high current densities. This work is of great significance for expanding the family members of MXenes with tunable chemistries and structures.

Since the yield of titanium-bearing blast furnace slag (TF) during the smelting of vanadium titanium magnetite is large, it is urgent to find ways to recycle it and implement its value-added utilization. In this study, a perovskite-rich photocatalyst was prepared by acid-washing of TF, and then Ce was doped to modify it for photocatalytic removal of gaseous toluene under the irradiation of visible light. XRD, XRF and XPS analyses demonstrated that the perovskite phase was enriched after the acid-washing, and the content of CaTiO 3 in the acid-washed slag (AS) also increased after Ce doping. The combined N 2 adsorption-desorption, UV Vis DRS, EIS, PL , and ESR analysis results indicated that the photocatalytic performance of the mentioned photocatalyst was related to the Ce dopant content. The AS doped with 20% Ce (20% Ce-AS) had a lower band gap and larger specific surface area than the others catalysts. Under visible light radiation , more active radicals were produced, and the removal efficiency of toluene reached 92.08% for 20% Ce-AS. In addition, the results of the in situ DRIFTS tests indicated that toluene was gradually degraded by the Ce-doped perovskite-type photocatalyst to alcohols and aldehydes and mineralized to H 2 O and CO 2 . This study is expected to provide a new approach for the technical development of the value-added utilization of TF coupled with the efficient removal of toluene.
