To address the challenge of achieving simultaneous pollutant removal and real-time monitoring in water remediation, Z-scheme Cu 2 O/g-C 3 N 4 /Ag heterostructures with integrated functionalities for synergistic adsorption, photocatalytic degradation, and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) detection were developed—hereafter referred to as APS-Hs (adsorption–photocatalysis–SERS heterostructures). Particular emphasis was placed on the Cu 2 O/g-C 3 N 4 /Ag-1.5 APS-Hs, incorporating an optimized 1.5 wt% Ag loading. Optical and electrochemical tests demonstrated that the Cu 2 O/g-C 3 N 4 /Ag-1.5 APS-Hs significantly enhanced charge separation efficiency and reduced charge transfer resistance. Under visible-light irradiation, the Cu 2 O/g-C 3 N 4 /Ag-1.5 APS-Hs attained a removal efficiency of 98.1 % for methyl orange (MO) within 45 min and sustained an efficiency of 84.0 % after three consecutive cycles. XRD and SEM analyses conducted before and after photocatalytic cycling confirmed the composite's outstanding structural and morphological stability. Notably, the Cu 2 O/g-C 3 N 4 /Ag-1.5 APS-Hs demonstrated the highest adsorption capacity (21.34 mg/g) among all samples. Zeta potential measurements revealed a surface charge reversal from + 22.35 mV to −10.29 mV, indicative of strong electrostatic interactions with anionic pollutants. Pseudo-second-order (PSO) kinetic modeling (R 2 =0.971) further established physisorption as the dominant mechanism. Radical trapping experiments verified that the enhanced photocatalytic performance originates from the Z-scheme charge transfer pathway. Additionally, the Cu 2 O/g-C 3 N 4 /Ag-1.5 APS-Hs substrate achieved a SERS enhancement factor of 3.1 × 10 6 and a broadband self-cleaning capability, underscoring its potential for integrated environmental remediation and sensing applications.

It is still a big challenge to realize the bottom-up design and fabrication of high-efficient photocatalyst. Herein, MoSe 2 -WSe 2 @S v -ZnIn 2 S 4 (MoSe 2 -WSe 2 @S v -ZIS) Z-scheme photocatalyst with chemical bond bridged wedge-type heterointerface is designed and synthesized based on a bottom-up strategy from band matching and surface modulating to wedge-type heterointerface constructing. Experimental and characterizations results reveal the basic principle for the enhanced photocatalytic activity, in which the internal electric field provides charge transfer driving force, the chemical bond connected wedge-type heterointerface with ample atomic-level charge transfer channels promotes interfacial photocarriers transfer, and the S-vacancies accelerates photocarriers separation. As a result, MoSe 2 -WSe 2 @S v -ZIS achieves a H 2 evolution rate of 120.74 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 (with sacrificial agent) and 2.27 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 (without sacrificial agent), an apparent quantum efficiency of 16.3% at 420 nm, and nearly 90% of H 2 production retention after 10 times successive uses. This work donates a design model on fabricating high-performance photocatalyst with chemical bond bridged allotypic heterointerface.

The sustainable conversion from solar energy to chemical energy is realized by using photocatalytic technology to produce hydrogen and hydrogen peroxide. In this work, the construction of a direct Z-scheme heterojunction is of great significance for improving the efficiency and stability of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (PHE) and photocatalytic hydrogen peroxide production (PHP). In this study, P-doped h-BN (PBN) nanosheets are used to support the in-situ growth of ZnIn 2 S 4 nanoflowers via wet chemical method, and sandwich-like PBN/ZnIn 2 S 4 hierarchical heterostructures are successfully synthesized. The PHE performance of PBN/ZnIn 2 S 4 (∼59.46 μmol/h) is ∼ 2.35 times than that of the original ZnIn 2 S 4 (∼25.27 μmol/h), and the PHP performance (∼122.82 μmol/L/h) is 39.37 times than that of PBN (∼3.12 μmol/L/h). The excellent photocatalytic performance of PBN/ZnIn 2 S 4 can be attributed to the following points: (1) the acceleration of the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs induced by the formation of Z-scheme heterostructure; (2) reasonable design and construction of sandwich-like PBN/ZnIn 2 S 4 hierarchical heterostructure; (3) the promotion the migration and separation of photogenerated carriers by the built-in electric field. This work provides new ideas for the development of high-efficiency PHE and PHP Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst design.

The Z-type heterojunction CoS/Bi 4 O 5 I 2 material was prepared by the solvothermal method. The crystal structure and surface elemental valence state of the material were investigated by XRD, XPS, and other characterization methods. The microstructure of the material was investigated by SEM, BET, and other methods. In the experiment of degradation of 20 mg/L tetracycline hydrochloride using the prepared photocatalytic materials, the optimal photocatalytic performance of CoS/Bi 4 O 5 I 2 was explored with the introduction of 1.5 % CoS, and the degradation rate could reach 94.7 %. It was also found that 1.5 % CoS/Bi 4 O 5 I 2 had stable photocatalytic performance and good photocatalytic performance for all tetracycline antibiotics. Then the possible degradation pathways in the degradation process of TCH were explored using GC-MS, and the acute toxicity of the intermediates was evaluated by ECOSAR software. The UV–vis-DRS results showed that the overall photoelectrical properties of the composites were enhanced after introducing CoS with broad-spectrum absorption properties, and the PL and EIS results also proved the collation. The possible degradation mechanism of the CoS/Bi 4 O 5 I 2 system was also speculated by combining the free radical trapping experiments with the M-S curve results. The increasing severity of antibiotic pollution necessitates the development of highly efficient photocatalytic materials to enhance environmental remediation capabilities. Traditional photocatalysts suffer from high recombination rates of photogenerated carriers and low degradation efficiency. To enhance the photocatalytic activity and cycling stability of Bi 4 O 5 I 2 , we synthesized a CoS/Bi 4 O 5 I 2 heterojunction material via a solvothermal method. Using 20 mg/L TCH as a model pollutant, we investigated the photocatalytic efficiency of the prepared material. Through comprehensive experiments and structural analyses using XRD, XPS, and SEM, we explored the photocatalytic degradation performance and mechanism of tetracycline, confirming that CoS/Bi 4 O 5 I 2 is an ideal material for constructing a Z-type heterojunction, effectively reducing the recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. Compared to pure Bi 4 O 5 I 2 , the CoS/Bi 4 O 5 I 2 composite exhibits superior performance in improving charge separation efficiency and enhancing visible light absorption. This study successfully constructs a Z-type heterojunction with efficient electron-hole separation, significantly enhancing photocatalytic efficiency. The composite material holds great potential for antibiotic pollution treatment, while the elucidation of its photocatalytic degradation mechanism provides theoretical guidance for designing novel photocatalysts.

The construction of green and efficient photocatalysts for the treatment of heavy metals in wastewater through simple strategies is still an extremely huge challenge. Herein, SnS/Bi 2 S 3 Z-scheme heterostructure photocatalyst with abundant sulfur vacancies was fabricated by one-pot hydrothermal approach and exploited for the efficient elimination of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)). Due to the tight contact interface of the in-situ heterostructures, charge transfer was carried out quickly and photogenerated carrier separation was accelerated. Moreover, the unique charge transmission path of the Z-scheme can efficiently inhibit the reorganization of active carriers. The abundant sulfur vacancies can further improve the photogenerated carrier separation efficiency. SnS/Bi 2 S 3 -2 can achieve effective reduction of Cr(VI) with the efficiency of 91.6 % under 30 min visible light illumination. This study provides a promising photocatalyst for the treatment of chromium hexavalent sewage, and effectively promotes the exploration of one-step construction of heterostructure photocatalyst in the field of water environment remediation.

With the rapid advancement of modern industry and population growth, unrestrained discharge of industrial effluent and domestic sewage has caused severe environmental pollution, which poses a severe challenge to human habitat. Owing to the unique eco-friendly characteristics, photocatalytic technology has emerged as a highly promising approach in the wastewater treatment very recently. Z-scheme heterojunction ternary photocatalysts of “ x · AgCl/ y · CoWO₄/Ag” were ingeniously designed and developed in this study, exhibiting exceptionally high photocatalytic activity for degrading micropollutants in wastewater compared with single-component photocatalysts. For instance, photocatalytic activity of AgCl/CoWO₄/Ag (reflected by the reaction kinetic parameter k ) is 7.7 times that of AgCl and 313 times that of CoWO₄, respectively. The experimental results and analysis revealed a typical Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism in these ternary photocatalyst heterojunctions, thereby confirming the structural characteristics of Z-scheme heterojunction. Furthermore, the ternary photocatalysts retained the reaction activity with virtually no change after undergoing five cycles of catalytic experiments, highlighting its excellent stability. Consequently, an underlying mechanism was proposed herein to account for the enhanced photocatalytic properties. It is believed that such ternary Z-scheme heterojunction materials expand halide-based heterojunction construction methods and promise significant implications for environmental remediation.

A unique urchin-like CoZnAl-LDH/RGO/g-C 3 N 4 (LDH/RGO/CN) Z-scheme photocatalyst, which is fabricated by the hydrothermal synthesis of CoZnAl-LDH and the in situ loading of RGO and g-C 3 N 4 , is developed for the photocatalytic conversion of CO 2 . The special spiny external surface and hollow inner cavity endow LDH/RGO/CN with a significantly enhanced light-harvesting capacity. The well-distributed g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets on the CoZnAl-LDH nanoplates, combined with RGO as an electron mediator, constructs an excellent heterosystem with numerous interfaces, efficient charge separation and highly exposed catalytic active sites. The Z-scheme charge-transfer process promotes the oxidizability and reducibility of CoZnAl-LDH and g-C 3 N 4 . Furthermore, the synergistic effect among the components contributes to intense adsorption and chemical activation towards CO 2 , which reduces the reaction barrier for CO 2 photoreduction. As a result, the optimized LDH/RGO/CN exhibits highly efficient and selective photocatalytic CO 2 conversion to CO. The special 3D urchin-like architecture paves a new way for design of photocatalyst with ideal performance.

A Z-scheme is a promising approach to achieve broad-spectrum photocatalysis. Integration of TiO 2 with another semiconductor with a band gap of ∼1.0 eV would be ideal to harvest both ultraviolet and visible-near infrared light for photocatalysis; however, most narrow-bandgap semiconductors have straddling band structure alignments with TiO 2 , constituting an obstacle to forming the Z-scheme for photocatalytic hydrogen production. In this communication, we demonstrate Ag 2 S as a model system where the energy band upshift of the narrow-bandgap semiconductor that shares an interface with a metal can overcome this limitation. To fabricate the design, we developed a unique approach to synthesize Ag 2 S–Ag–TiO 2 hybrid structures. The obtained ternary hybrid structures exhibited dramatically enhanced performance in photocatalytic hydrogen production under full-spectrum light illumination. The activities were significantly higher than the sum of those of Ag 2 S–Ag–TiO 2 structures under λ < 400 nm and λ > 400 nm irradiation as well as those of their counterparts under any light illumination conditions.

E/Z isomers of hexaphenyl-1,3-butadiene (HPB) derivative containing dialdehyde groups, 4,4’-((1E,3E)-1,2,3,4-tetraphenylbuta-1,3-diene-1,4-diyl)dibenzaldehyde (EE-HPB-CHO), 4,4’-((1Z,3E)-1,2,3,4-tetraphenylbuta-1,3-diene-1,4-diyl)-dibenzaldehyde (EZ-HPB-CHO) and 4,4’-((1Z,3Z)-1,2,3,4-tetra-phenylbuta-1,3-diene-1,4-diyl)dibenzaldehyde (ZZ-HPB-CHO), were firstly synthesized in one-pot and readily separated by silica gel column chromatography . The E/Z isomers containing conjugated diene exhibited remarkable differences in the fields of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) or aggregation-enhancement emission (AEE) behavior, thermostability, and mechanochromic performance. Among them, EE-HPB-CHO with dense molecular packing and strong intermolecular interaction was a better AIEgen while the EZ- and ZZ-isomers exhibited AEE behavior. Moreover, EE-HPB-CHO hardly displayed the mechanochromic performance. EZ-HPB-CHO irreversibly exhibited a blue-shift of 23 nm by grinding treatment, which could not be restored by fuming with organic solvents or heating. In contrast, owing to its twisting conformation and relative loose packing, ZZ-HPB-CHO reversibly displayed a red-shift of 20 nm during multiple repeating cycles of grinding and fuming treatments, showing superior mechanochromic performance.

A novel porous Z-scheme Ag/AgFeO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 (AAF/UPCN) photocatalyst was successfully prepared via a facile hydrothermal, precipitation and photo-deposition–method. Under visible light irradiation, AAF/UPCN exhibited excellent bisphenol A degradation effect and Staphylococcus aureus inactivation effect compared with porous g-C 3 N 4 (UPCN) and AgFeO 2 . The •O 2 ‾ was the major active species during the photocatalytic degradation process. For the photocatalytic mechanism, the photoexcited electrons of UPCN transferred to AgFeO 2 mediated by Ag nanoparticles . This charge migration and separation route was verified collectively by the PL spectra, photoelectrochemical characterizations, chemical scavenger experiments and ESR measurements. Furthermore, the band distribution of catalysts was obtained by DFT calculation. This Ag nanoparticles mediated electron transfer pathway could promote the effective segregation of photoexcited carriers. The synergistic effect of UPCN, AgFeO 2 and Ag in heterostructure could promote the efficient separation of photogenerated charge carriers. This study provides a new strategy for rational design of high-efficient g-C 3 N 4 -based photocatalysts for environmental remediation.

The core–shell-structured Co–Z@TiO2(N2+O2) catalyst, which was prepared by subsequent pyrolysis and calcination from precursor ZIF-67 coated by amorphous TiO2, was applied in Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS). Compared with Co–Z@TiO2 catalyst, which was directly calcinated in air (Co–Z@TiO2(O2)) or pyrolyzed in N2 (Co–Z@TiO2(N2)), the Co–Z@TiO2(N2+O2) catalyst showed better dispersion, easier reducibility, and optimal metal cobalt particle size (8.4 nm) due to the intermediate pyrolysis treatment and core–shell structure. The Co–Z@TiO2(N2+O2) catalyst exhibited high cobalt time yield (14.84 μmolCO·gCo–1·s–1), high selectivity to C5+ (81.5%), and low selectivity to low carbon hydrocarbon (CH4 (12.7%) and C2–C4 (5.8%)). The core–shell structure could enhance diffusion limitations to transform intermediate products into heavier hydrocarbons. After 110 h of evaluation, the Co–Z@TiO2(N2+O2) catalyst still maintained good catalytic performance and cobalt particle size distribution.

A flower-like CeO₂/BiOCl Z-scheme heterojunction was constructed for efficient charge separation. • The catalyst degraded 99.6% RhB (600 mg/L), 93.3% CR (100 mg/L), and 90.3% TC (10 mg/L) under visible-light irradiation. • The photocatalyst achieved 98.9% antibacterial efficiency against E. coli . • DFT, ESR, and trapping experiments confirmed the Z-scheme charge-transfer mechanism. The construction of Z-scheme heterojunctions is an effective strategy for enhancing photocatalytic performance by promoting charge separation while maintaining a robust redox capacity. In this study, we present a flower-like CeO₂/flake-like BiOCl heterojunction (designated as 2-BC) synthesized using a simple method. 2-BC demonstrated remarkable efficacy in degrading high concentrations of Rhodamine B (RhB, 600 mg/L, 99.6%) and efficiently removed Congo Red (CR, 100 mg/L, 93.3%) and Tetracycline (TC, 10 mg/L, 90.3%). Additionally, it exhibited exceptional antibacterial activity, with a kill rate of 98.9% against Escherichia coli ( E. coli) under illumination, and notable stability, retaining 83.5% of its initial activity after five cycles. The superior performance of 2-BC was attributed to a Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism, which was supported by density functional theory calculations and radical trapping experiments. This mechanism ensures efficient charge carrier separation while preserving strong redox potentials in both semiconductors, thereby enhancing the generation of active species (•O₂⁻, h⁺, and •OH). Our findings suggest that 2-BC is a stable and highly efficient Z-scheme photocatalyst with significant potential for the treatment of organic and biological pollutants in aquatic environments.
