3 D Ordered Macroporous Alumina–Carbon Nanocomposite Supported Platinum Nanoparticles as Effective and Reusable Catalysts for Asymmetric Hydrogenation

Ting Yang,Lan-Lan Lou,Wenjun Yu,Yajun Feng,Hao Li,Kai Yu,Shuangxi Liu

Graphical Porous but extraordinarily durable : 3 D ordered macroporous alumina–carbon composite supported Pt nanocatalysts are applied in the asymmetric hydrogenation of ethyl pyruvate. They exhibit high catalytic activity and extraordinary durability. The three-dimensionally ordered macroporous alumina-carbon composite materials were firstly prepared through a surfactant-assisted colloidal crystal template method and applied to support Pt nanoparticles. The results of SEM, XRD, TEM, and N 2 sorption analyses revealed that these composite materials possessed highly ordered macroporous structures with meso- and micropores within the skeletons of macropores and that the Pt nanoparticles were well dispersed on these materials with a very narrow size distribution. These prepared Pt nanocatalysts were evaluated in the asymmetric hydrogenation of ethyl pyruvate after chiral modification with cinchonidine. Excellent catalytic activity and enantioselectivity were achieved. More importantly, these catalysts exhibited extraordinary stability and reusability during the reaction and could be reused at least 26 times without significant loss in catalytic activity and enantioselectivity.

Design and construction of metal sulfide/phosphide heterostructures with optimized d-band center and boosted electrocatalytic oxygen evolution

Xianyu Chu,Yanan Wang,Li Jing,Wei Jiang,Yuanyuan Wu,Ming Lu,Bo Liu,Chunbo Liu,Yantao Sun,Guangbo Che

Constructing heterostructures to regulate the electronic structure is an effective strategy for enhancing the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalytic activity. Herein, we prepared heterostructured Co 4 S 3 /CoP 3 (CoPS/NFF) electrocatalysts through a one-step phosphorization and sulfuration process. The synthesized electrode drives an overpotential of 190, 272, and 331 mV at 20, 50, and 100 mA cm −2 for OER in 1 M KOH alkaline media, respectively. These values outperformed those of monophase Co 4 S 3 and CoP 3 as well as the majority of transition metal-based catalysts previously reported. Furthermore, the Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculation results show that charge redistribution occurs at CoPS/NFF heterogeneous interfaces, which facilitates charge transfer and improves catalytic activity. The CoPS/NFF with heterostructure optimizes the adsorption strength of oxygen-containing intermediates (*O, *OH, and *OOH) by appropriately adjusting the d-band center energy level, thereby reducing the energy barrier of OER. This work provides a new perspective on rational design strategies for efficient transition metal-based electrocatalysts by inducing d-band center regulation through the construction of heterostructures.

Effects of oligosaccharides, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose and D-allulose on thermomechanical, rheological, fermentation properties of sugar-reduced dough

Zirou Xiao,Shuang Wu,Hongshan Liang,Bin Li,Jing Li

The reduction of sucrose in dough formulations disrupts mechanical properties, fermentation performance, and structural organization, leading to rigidity and impaired gas retention. This study investigated how composite improvers—oligosaccharides (XOS/KOS), CMCNa, and D-allulose—mitigate these challenges by restoring viscoelastic balance, enhancing fermentation, and stabilizing protein and starch interactions. Correlation analysis was further conducted to explore the complex relationships between these parameters. Results revealed that D-allulose optimized gas retention by contributing to a denser gluten network, achieving the highest retention rate of 90.92 %. Oligosaccharides improved water availability, promoting gluten development and enhancing starch gelatinization, while CMCNa strengthened the gluten network through its binding and film-forming properties, collectively increasing fermentation height by 79.78 % compared to sugar-reduced dough. These structural improvements were further confirmed by SEM images, which revealed a more uniform microstructure with continuous gluten films encapsulating starch granules. These findings elucidate the mechanisms underlying the deterioration of sugar-reduced dough and highlight the potential of composite improvers in mitigating the adverse effects of sucrose reduction, paving the way for the development of high-quality sugar-reduced products.

Co-treatment of Astragaloside IV with Vitamin D in Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathic Rats: Protective Effects and Potential Mechanisms

Fengyan Tang,Bo Zhao,Li Zhang,Faisal Raza,Hajra Zafar,Shao Zhong,Lin Li,Wenhua Zhu,Lingna Fang,Bing Lu,Liwen Shen,Ping Guo,Nengxing Yu,Quanmin Li

Objective: The potential mechanism underlying the protective effect of Astragaloside IV (AS-IV) co-treatment with 1, 25-dihydroxy-vitamin D (Vit-D) on neuropathy in diabetic high-fat rats was investigated. Methods: The rat diabetic hyperlipidemia (DH) model was established via streptozotocin and a high-fat diet (HFD). After co-treatment (of AS-IV and Vit-D at respective doses of 50 mg/kg via oral gavage and 30000 IU/kg via intramuscular injection), blood glucose levels, markers of inflammation and oxidative stress, as well as apoptosis and histopathology were evaluated with appropriate techniques. Results: Co-treatment could effectively reduce blood glucose levels substantially (p< 0.01), improve weight loss, and decrease oral glucose tolerance. Reduced respective sensory and motor nerve conduction velocities in rats were substantially improved (p<0.01) after co-treatment. Also, we observed obvious improvement in DH-induced injured nerve fiber myelin structure and other organ pathologies in co-treated rats. Besides, we observed up-regulated expressions of peroxisomal-proliferator activated receptor-alpha (PPAR-α) and Vit-D receptors (VDR) (p< 0.01) through the western blotting technique. Using the same technique, we also discovered reduced levels of interleukin (IL)1 beta, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha, coupled with increased IL-10 and superoxide dismutase levels (p< 0.01). Importantly, co-treatment could effectively exert anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory effects. Also, co-treatment resulted in the up-regulation of PPAR-α and VDR expressions, inhibition of the renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system, and promotion of β-cell sensitivity to insulin. Conclusion: The combined application of AS-IV and Vit-D exhibited health effects such as anti-oxidation, regulation of inflammatory factors, and promotion of cell repair, which may be considered as the mechanisms underlying treatment of diabetic peripheral neuropathy and improvement in biochemical indicators.

Constructing CoFe alloy and tailoring d-band center in trimetallic ZIF-derived porous carbon for bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysis

Yanan Ma,Dingyu Zhang,Haimeng Wang,Yuxuan Liang,Yuan Zhang,Fengfeng Yan,Liang Sun,Qian Wang,Wei Li

Synthesis of multiple-site single-atom catalyst (SAC) with metal-containing nanoparticles by using zeolite imidazole framework (ZIF) for improving the bifunctional electrocatalytic performance is of great significance, yet it is also a challenge. Trimetallic ZIF-derived porous carbon nanosheets with the CoFe alloy nanoparticles enclosed in nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (N-CNTs) are fabricated by utilizing three transition metals as ZIF precursors and sodium chloride as templates via a typical two-step process, including synthesis and pyrolysis. By building CoFe alloy and tailoring d-band center ( E d ) of the Co site, the as-obtained FeCoZn@S-CN ZIF exhibits predominant kinetic activity and durability towards ORR and OER with an extremely low potential gap (Δ E ) value of 0.584    V, exceeding many other efficient counterparts. This study provides an effective approach for designing and synthesizing atomically dispersed multi-metal site catalysts with alloyed nanoparticles to achieve high-efficient bifunctional electrocatalytic performance in the application of the recharged zinc-air battery (ZAB).

D–A Conjugated Polymer/CdS S-Scheme Heterojunction with Enhanced Interfacial Charge Transfer for Efficient Photocatalytic Hydrogen Generation

Yaqi Li,Sijie Wan,Weichen Liang,Bei Cheng,Wang Wang,Yao Xiang,Jiaguo Yu,Shaowen Cao

Owing to the improved charge separation and maximized redox capability of the system, Step-scheme (S-scheme) heterojunctions have garnered significant research attention for efficient photocatalysis of H 2 evolution. In this work, an innovative linear donor–acceptor (D–A) conjugated polymer fluorene-alt-(benzo-thiophene-dione) (PFBTD) is coupled with the CdS nanosheets, forming the organic–inorganic S-scheme heterojunction. The CdS/PFBTD (CP) composite exhibits an impressed hydrogen production rate of 7.62 mmol g −1 h −1 without any co-catalysts, which is ≈14 times higher than pristine CdS. It is revealed that the outstanding photocatalytic performance is attributed to the formation of rapid electron transfer channels through the interfacial Cd─O bonding as evidenced by the density functional theory (DFT) calculations and in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. The charge transfer mechanism involved in S-scheme heterojunctions is further investigated through the photo-irradiated Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) analysis. This work provides a new point of view on the mechanism of interfacial charge transfer and points out the direction of designing superior organic–inorganic S-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts.

Antioxidation, anti-inflammation and anti-apoptosis by paeonol in LPS/d-GalN-induced acute liver failure in mice

Xiaobao Gong,You Yang,Ligua Huang,Qingyan Zhang,Rong-Zhen Wan,Peng Zhang,Baoshun Zhang

To evaluate the hepatoprotective effects and potential mechanisms of paeonol (Pae) against acute liver failure (ALF) induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS)/ d -galactosamine ( d -GalN) in mice, we examined anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic activities of Pae. We found that Pae pretreatment markedly reduced the activities of alanine transaminase and aspartate transaminase as well as the histopathological changes induced by LPS/ d -GalN. Catalase , glutathione and superoxide dismutase activities increased and reactive oxygen species activity decreased after Pae treatment compared with LPS/ d -GalN treatment. Pretreatment with Pae also significantly inhibited the expression levels of iNOS, nitric oxide (NO), COX-2 and prostaglandin E 2 (PGE 2 ). In addition, Pae administration prevented the phosphorylated expression of IκB kinase, inhibitor kappa B in the nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) signaling pathway , and suppressed the phosphorylated expression of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK), c-jun-N-terminal kinase and p38 in the MAPK signaling pathway. Pretreatment with Pae also inhibited hepatocyte apoptosis by reducing the expression of caspases 3, 8, 9, and Bax, and increasing Bcl-2. In total, protective effects of Pae against LPS/ d -GalN-induced ALF in mice are attributed to its antioxidative effect, inflammatory suppression in NF-κB and MARK signaling pathways, and inhibition of hepatocyte apoptosis inhibition. Therefore, Pae can be a potential therapeutic agent in attenuating LPS/ d -GalN-induced ALF in the future.

Manipulating the d- and p-Band centers of amorphous alloys by variable composition for robust oxygen evolution reaction

Yuci Xin,Yong Wu,Xingan Dong,Yuhan Li,Zhenxiang Cheng,Jianli Wang,Xiaolong Guo,Peng Yu

Amorphous electrocatalysts display several unique advantages in electricity-driven water splitting compared to their crystalline analogs, but understanding their structure–activity relationships remains a major challenge. Herein, we show that the d- and p-electronic states of amorphous Ni-Fe-B can be subtly manipulated by varying the Ni and Fe contents. The optimal Ni-Fe-B alloy exhibits a high performance in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), as supported by its impressive stability (no clear degradation after 100 h) and considerably lower overpotential compared to those of its crystalline analogs. Based on theoretical calculations, different Ni and Fe contents can cause significant shifts in the d-band levels of Ni and Fe and the p-band level of B, thus altering the OER activity. Additionally, the energy difference between the d- and p-band centers (ΔE ad-p ) may be an effective index for use in reflecting the structure–activity relationship of an amorphous Ni-Fe-B alloy in the OER. An amorphous Ni-Fe-B alloy with a smaller ΔE ad-p displays a higher intrinsic activity. This study supplies a unique direction for use in constructing the structure–activity relationships of amorphous electrocatalysts by revealing the role of ΔE ad-p , which promotes fundamental research and the practical application of amorphous electrocatalysts.

In situ dressing based on a D–π–A structured aggregation-induced emission photosensitizer for healing infected wounds

Yu Ma,Jiawei You,Jianquan Hou,Yupeng Shi,Engui Zhao

Photodynamic antimicrobial therapy (aPDT) can effectively kill bacteria without promoting drug resistance. However, the phototoxicity of photosensitizers in aPDT against normal cells hinders their practical applications. In this work, we report the utilization of an aggregation-induced emission (AIE)-active photosensitizer, DTTPB, to develop antibacterial dressing for effective eradication of both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The D–π–A structure of DTTPB facilitates efficient ROS generation in the aggregate state, addressing the limitations of a traditional photosensitizer. Notably, DTTPB demonstrates good biocompatibility towards normal cells, which minimizes its phototoxicity to normal tissues. To demonstrate its practical implications, DTTPB is combined with Carbomer 940 to create an injectable hydrogel dressing (DTTPB@gel). DTTPB@gel not only adheres to wounds but also maintains the antimicrobial properties of DTTPB, which together contributes to its enhanced wound-healing performance. Biocompatibility and toxicity assessments confirm the safety of this novel material, highlighting its potential as a practical and effective treatment for bacterial infections in wounds. The results underscore the importance of innovative antimicrobial strategies in fighting against antibiotic resistance, paving the way for safer and more effective therapeutic options.

Exploring the optimal ratio of d-glucose/l-aspartic acid for targeting carbon dots toward brain tumor cells

Lihong Qiao,Tingting Sun,Xiaohua Zheng,Min Zheng,Zhigang Xie

Targeting imaging to the desired site of action can increase the accuracy and effectiveness of diagnostic and treatment. In this work, a series of fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) were prepared by varying molar ratios of d -glucose (Glu) to l -aspartic acid (Asp). Their photophysical properties, morphologies and structures were investigated in detail. More important, the targeting ability was screened by confocal laser scanning microscopy and flow cytometry. The results indicate that CDs prepared from the optimal molar ratio of Glu/Asp (7:3) exhibit the highest targeting ability on C6 glioma cells. This work highlights the interplay of molecular design and corresponding functions, and open new possibility of developing state-of-art nanoparticles for biomedical applications.

D-Penicillamine-coated Cu/Ag alloy nanocluster superstructures: aggregation-induced emission and tunable photoluminescence from red to orange

Lingcan Kong,Xuefeng Chu,Chuanxi Wang,Hong Zhou,Yukang Wu,Wenwei Liu

The aggregation-induced emission (AIE) behavior of metal nanoclusters has attracted much attention owing to their extensive application prospects in bio-imaging and chemical sensors. However, the intrinsic mechanism of metal nanoclusters’ aggregation-induced emission is still not very clear. Herein, Cu nanoclusters S1 and Ag(I)-doped Cu/Ag nanoclusters S2 and S3 coated with D-penicillamine are designed and synthesized by a self-assembly strategy. S1–S3 show strong luminescence properties with luminescence quantum yields as high as 11.4%–14.2%. Moreover, their luminescence peak position shows an obvious hypsochromic shift from 615 (S1) to 570 nm (S3). With the introduction of Ag(I) ions, the assembly morphology also shows clear changes from the irregular assembly structure (S1) to large spherical particles with the average size of 0.18 μm for S2 and 0.47 μm for S3. A detailed investigation of high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) images, X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns, ESI-TOF-mass spectra, UV-vis absorption spectra, photoluminescence spectra and luminescence lifetimes of Cu/Ag nanoclusters S2 and S3 indicates that Cu/Ag nanoclusters are actually a Cu/Ag alloy nanocluster superstructure and the microscopic arrangement of S2 and S3 is more compact and ordered relative to S1. The more compact and ordered Cu/Ag alloy nanocluster superstructure enhances the metal–metal interaction of inter-nanoclusters and intra-nanoclusters and facilitates the radiative transition of ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) and/or ligand-to-metal–metal charge transfer (LMMCT), which results in the aggregation-induced emission phenomenon. In addition, an enhanced metal–metal interaction increases the average metal–metal distance of the Cu/Ag nanocluster superstructure, leading to a hypsochromic shift of emission spectra. Furthermore, the Cu/Ag alloy nanoclusters show good stability and reversibility on pH cycling between pH = 3 and 7 and temperature cycling between 5 °C and 48 °C. The Cu/Ag alloy nanoclusters can be used as probes for Ag(I) ion and halide anion detection in real water samples by the ratiometric PL method (I570/I615).

Chang-Kang-Fang alleviates diarrhea predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D) through inhibiting TLR4/NF-κB/NLRP3 pathway

Sihao Zhang,Danmei Tian,Zixuan Xia,Fengge Yang,Yanhui Chen,Zhihong Yao,Yi He,Xinglong Miao,Guirong Zhou,Xinsheng Yao,Jinshan Tang

Ethnopharmacological relevance Chang-Kang-Fang (CKF), originated from traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formulas, has been utilized to treat diarrhea predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D) based on clinical experience. However, the underlying mechanism of CKF for treating IBS-D remains unclear and need further clarification. Aim of the study The objective of this present investigation was to validate the efficacy of CKF on IBS-D model rats and to uncover its potential mechanism for the treatment of IBS-D. Materials and Methods We first established the IBS-D rat model through neonatal maternal separation (NMS) in combination with restraint stress (RS) and the administration of senna decoction via gavage. To confirm the therapeutic effect of CKF on treating IBS-D, abdominal withdrawal reflex (AWR) scores, the quantity of fecal pellets, and the fecal water content (FWC) were measured to evaluate the influence of CKF on visceral hypersensitivity and the severity of diarrhea symptom after the intragastric administration of CKF for 14 days. Subsequently, enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was applied to assess the effect of CKF on neuropeptides substance P (SP) and 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), as well as inflammatory cytokines in serum and in intestinal tissues. Further, colonic pathological changes, the amount of colonic mast cells, and the expression level of occludin in rat colon tissues, were investigated by hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining, toluidine blue staining, and immunohistochemistry, respectively. To explore the underlying mechanisms, alterations in colonic RNA transcriptomics for the normal, model, and CKF treatment groups were assessed using RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq). Subsequently, quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR), western blot (WB), and immunofluorescence (IF) assays were applied to validate the effect of CKF on predicted pathways in vivo and in vitro . In addition, to elucidate the potential active compounds in CKF, 11 representative components found in CKF were selected, and their anti-inflammation potentials were evaluated using LPS-treated RAW264.7 cell models. Results CKF treatment significantly reduced the number of fecal pellets, attenuated visceral hypersensitivity, and decreased 5-HT and SP concentrations in serum and colon tissues, along with a reduction in colonic mast cell counts, correlating with improved symptoms in IBS-D rats. Meanwhile, CKF treatment reduced the colonic inflammatory cell infiltration, lowered the levels of IL-6, TNF- α , and IL-1 β in serum and colon tissues, and increased the occludin protein expression in colon tissues to improve inflammatory response and colonic barrier function. RNA-Seq, in conjugation with our previous network pharmacology analysis, indicated that CKF might mitigate the symptoms of IBS-D rats by inhibiting the Toll like receptor 4/Nuclear factor kappa-B/NLR family pyrin domain-containing protein 3 (TLR4/NF- κ B/NLRP3) pathway, which was confirmed by WB, IF, and qRT-PCR experiments in vivo and in vitro . Furthermore, coptisine, berberine, hyperoside, epicatechin, and gallic acid present in CKF emerged as potential active components for treating IBS-D, as they demonstrated in vitro anti-inflammatory effects. Conclusion Our findings demonstrate that CKF effectively improves the symptoms of IBS-D rats, potentially through the inhibition of the TLR4/NF- κ B/NLRP3 pathway. Moreover, this study unveils the potential bioactive components in CKF that could be applied in the treatment of IBS-D.
