Cadmium sulfide (CdS) has been currently emerged as a promising class of photocatalyst candidates toward hydrogen evolution from water photosplitting because of its unique electronic structure and favorable optical property . However, pure CdS often suffers from the poor stability and fast charge carrier recombination. Cocatalyst engineering is an effective strategy to activate photocatalytic performance of CdS but remains a challenge. Herein, we develop an effective hydrothermal method to construct microwave-derived CdS nanocrystals hybridized with MoS 2 nanosheets . Such hybrids bear the nanocrystal-on-nanosheet heterostructures , ensuring the intimate interfacial contact and increased charge transfer kinetics. The resulting CdS/MoS 2 hybrids exhibit highly efficient photoreactivity and excellent photostability for hydrogen evolution under visible light irradiation. The hydrogen generation rate achieved by the optimal CdS/MoS 2 is approximately 286 times higher than that of pure CdS. This remarkably boosted performance could be ascribed to synergistically interfacial effect that brings an energy-beneficial driving force to realize the highly efficient transfer, migration, and separation of photoexcited charge carriers.

Sewage discharge produced by homes and industries contains both oil and water-soluble components. In order to remove oil from water, materials with specific wettability can be used; however, these materials cannot remove dissolved contaminants from water. In this research, we prepared a superhydrophobic CdS cotton for water purification. This material has the ability to adsorb different types of oil due to its non-wettability (WCA = 152°). Moreover, its response behavior towards visible light enables it to remove water-soluble pollutants as well. The highest oil absorption rate of superhydrophobic CdS cotton is nearly 30 times, and it can absorb light below 564 nm and produce •OH to degrade water soluble pollutants. Finally, based on Mott-Schottky curve, the position of Fermi energy level was determined (−0.55 eV). Also, the positions of valence and conduction bands were calculated based on the analysis of band gap which helps in proving photoelectric response characteristics.

In this study, l -aspartic acid stabilized CdS quantum dots (L-Asp-CdS QDs) were synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal method and used for the qualitative identification of Cr 3+ . Cr 3+ could be identified rapidly based on the formation of precipitated floccules using this method. Qualitative assessment indicated the resistance of this method to interference from various metal ions and it can be applied over a wide pH range with a qualitative determination limit of 1 μM. Moreover, we demonstrated that the L-Asp-CdS QDs can be employed for the practical detection of Cr 3+ in water samples.

Size controllable TiO2hollow microspheres (HMS) were synthesized by a carbonaceous spheres (CS) template method. Based on TiO2HMS, the ZnS/CdS quantum dots (QDs) were loaded to form a ZnS/CdS@TiO2HMS photoanode for quantum dots sensitized solar cell (QDSSC). The size effects of TiO2HMS on photovoltaic performance were investigated, and showed that TiO2HMS with sizes ~560 nm produced the best short-circuit current density (Jsc) of 8.02 mA cm−2and highest power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 1.83%, showing a better photovoltaic performance than any other QDSSCs based on TiO2HMS with size ~330 nm, ~400 nm, and ~700 nm. The improvement of photovoltaic performance based on ~560 nm TiO2HMS which can be ascribed to the enhanced light harvesting efficiency caused by multiple light reflection and strong light scattering of TiO2HMS. The ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectra and incident photo to the current conversion efficiency (IPCE) test results confirmed that the size of TiO2HMS has an obvious effect on light harvesting efficiency. A further application of ~560 nm TiO2HMS in ZnS/PbS/CdS QDSSC can improve the PCE to 2.73%, showing that TiO2HMS has wide applicability in the design of QDSSCs.Keywords:titanium dioxide;hollow microspheres;quantum dots sensitized solar cells

To detect and adsorb methylene blue (MB) from wastewater simultaneously, a solid fluorescent and absorbent material was designed by immobilizing attapulgite (ATP) on calcium alginate (CA) and reacting with carbon dots (CDs) which were modified by the activation of γ-(2,3-epoxypropoxy) propyltrimethoxysilane (KH-560), then the CA/ATP-g-CDs gel fibers were prepared. The problem of CDs easily falling out of materials was solved. The structures of the gel fibers were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), specific surface area (BET) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The thermal properties were analyzed by thermogravimetry (TG). The adsorption capacity was measured and the effect of initial pH was investigated. The results showed that ATP was successfully reacted with CA and the adsorption capacity was enhanced with the increase of the pH value. CA/ATP-g-CDs gel fibers were favorable materials to detect and adsorb MB simultaneously, and MB could be adsorbed by gel fibers and also the fluorescence of CA/ATP-g-CDs was weakened. At low concentrations of MB (1 μg L−1), the removal efficiency could even be as high as 100%.

Herein, we established a novel ultrasensitive photoelectrochemical biosensor for detecting urokinase-type plasminogen activator (u-PA), based on a g-C 3 N 4 /CdS nanocomposite. The prepared nanocomposite was characterized by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, ultraviolet–visible absorption spectroscopy , and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy , thus indicating that the nanocomposite was prepared successfully. In the typical process, the prepared nanocomposite was deposited on the surface of a bare FTO electrode. After being air-dried, the g-C 3 N 4 /CdS nanocomposite modified electrode was successively incubated with antibody against urokinase-type plasminogen activator and the blocking agent BSA to produce a photoelectrochemical biosensor for u-PA. In the presence of target u-PA antigen, the photocurrent response of the prepared biosensor electrode decreased significantly. The proposed novel photoelectrochemical biosensor exhibited good sensitivity, specificity, and reproducibility for u-PA detection, and a low detection limit of 33 fg mL −1 , ranging from 1 μg mL −1 –0.1 pg mL −1 . The proposed strategy should provide a promising method for detection of other biomarkers.

Nanoparticles exhibiting good biocompatibility and multifunctional optical, magnetic, and reactive properties are essential materials for the construction of next generation theranostics platforms. The core–shell structured CdSe@CdS is one of few semiconductor quantum dots (QD) that shows ideal photoluminescence for biological application including unity quantum yields, identical photoluminescence for ensembles and single dot, nonblinking, and antibleaching. However, overcoming toxicity concerns from Cd2+ is still a great challenge for promoting the practical medical application of the CdSe@CdS QD. Besides, the high quality luminescent and superparamagnetic nanoparticles at present are basically hydrophobic, which implies that the phase transfer of these functional nanoparticles into aqueous phase is the primary step to enable their biomedical application. Herein, we have developed a facile protocol to fabricate highly biocompatible nanoparticles showing both modulated luminescent and magnetic properties via a one-step self-assembling of amphiphilic block copolyarylene ether nitriles (amPEN), oleic acid stabilized CdSe@CdS QD, and Fe3O4 superparamagnetic nanoparticles (SP) in microemulsion system. Benefiting from the aromatic backbone structure of amPEN and its strong hydrophobic interaction with surface capping agent of QD/SP, the fabricated hybrid nanoprobe exhibits quite competitive colloids stability as well as fluorescent/magnetic properties, which ensures its application for in vitro fluorescence and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging of cancer cells.

A new, photoelectrochemical immunosensor was proposed on the basis of the La-CdS/3D ZnIn 2 S 4 /Au@ZnO sensitization structure for detection of aminoterminal pro-brain natriuretic peptides (NT-proBNP). The Au@ZnO-modified electrode was first assembled with 3D ZnIn 2 S 4 , and then further deposited with lanthanum doped cadmium sulfide (La-CdS) via successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction strategy. The Au@ZnO has excellent photoelectric activity and electrical conductivity . The ZnIn 2 S 4 with 3D architectures not only exhibit high photocurrent intensity under visible-light irradiation but also have large surface for the La-CdS deposition. Meanwhile, the La-CdS doped structure could depress the charge recombination, which effectively promotes separation of the generated electron-hole (e - /h + ) pairs and consequently enhances the photocurrent conversion efficiency. The polydopamine (PDA) was used not only as a cross-linker reagent for the immobilization of the anti-NT-proBNP but also as an electron donor for promoting the photo-generated e - /h + separation of the semiconductors. Under optimal conditions, the well-designed photoelectrochemical immunoassay exhibited a low detection limit of 0.32 pg mL −1 and a wide linear range from 0.8 pg mL −1 to 45 ng mL −1 for target NT-proBNP detection. Meanwhile, it also presented good reproducibility, specificity, and stability and might open a new promising strategy for the detection of other important tumor markers.

Herein we first coupled a wide photo-response photocatalyst with plasmon-enhanced triplet − triplet annihilation upconversion (TTA-UC) nanoparticles for photocatalytic hydrogen generation. The plasmon-based enhancement of TTA-UC was achieved by introducing Au nanoparticles into the core liquid of TTA-UC nanoparticles containing platinum(II)-octaethylporphyrin and 9,10-diphenylanthracene. Au-TTA nanoparticles encapsulated by silica shells significantly increased the green-to-blue upconversion compared with TTA nanoparticles. The silica shells after further surface functionalization can conjoin with photocatalysts. To improve the stability of cadmium sulfide (CdS), graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) was combined with CdS for g-C 3 N 4 -CdS heterojunctions. g-C 3 N 4 -CdS sheets based on Au-enhanced TTA-UC can utilize the upconverted high-energy photons and thereby realized efficient photocatalytic hydrogen production. Au-TTA nanoparticles conjoined with g-C 3 N 4 -CdS reached a high hydrogen production of 16.88 mmol g −1 under visible-light irradiation and an apparent quantum efficiency of 1.439% under green-light irradiation. The study provides a new TTA-supported upconversion-photocatalysis system enhanced by Au plasmon resonance effect for effectively hydrogen generation.

In this study, we synthesized CdS/(Au–ReS2) nanospheres that have highly efficient photocatalytic hydrogen production activity induced by dielectric–plasmon hybrid antenna resonance. As the diameter (D) of ReS2 nanospheres consisting of 2D nanosheets increases from 114 ± 11 to 218 ± 25 nm, the resonance wavelength of the ReS2 dielectric antenna is tuned from 380 to 620 nm and the hydrogen production rate for the CdS/(Au–ReS2) nanospheres increases by more than 1.85 times and reaches a value as high as 3060 μmol g−1 h−1, with a 9% weight percentage of Au. Due to the enhancements of the local electromagnetic field and excitation energy transfer by the ReS2–Au dielectric–plasmon hybrid antenna, the hydrogen production rate for the CdS/(Au–ReS2) nanospheres (D = 218 ± 25 nm) is 797, 319, 105 and 12 times larger than that for pure ReS2, Au–ReS2, CdS, and CdS–ReS2, respectively. Additionally, the persistence and reusability measurements indicate a favorable stability of CdS/(Au–ReS2). These results provide a strategy to prepare a new class of dielectric–plasmon hybrid antennas consisting of 2D materials and metal nanoparticles, which have promise in applications ranging from photocatalysis to nonlinear optics.

A kind of novel Glyp-functionalized-CdTe/CdS Quantum dots (QDs) was successfully synthesized by coating Glyp on the surface of the CdTe/CdS QDs. The fluorescence emission of the modified QDs was enhanced greatly but with a low resonance Rayleigh scattering (RRS). When it interacted with calf thymus DNA (ct-DNA), the fluorescence intensity of the system was obviously quenched and the RRS was enhanced, both in good linear relations. Based on the above, a novel fluorescence biosensor for simple, sensitive and selective detection of ct-DNA was developed. Under the optimized conditions, the linear ranges of the functionalized QDs fluorescence intensity and RRS intensity versus the concentration of ct-DNA were 0.109–70 μg mL −1 and 0.482–90 μg mL −1 , respectively. The corresponding detection limits by fluorescence quenching and by RRS enhancing methods were 0.0327 μg mL −1 and 0.146 μg mL −1 , respectively. The proposed method was applied to detect ct-DNA in synthetic sample with satisfactory results.

An efficient visible-light photocatalyst was successfully synthesized by surface-hybridizing graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) using a small amount of cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanoparticles. The CdS/g-C 3 N 4 nanocomposites were characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and photocurrent–time measurement. The photocatalytic activity of the CdS/g-C 3 N 4 nanocomposites was investigated by evaluating the degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) under visible-light irradiation. The effects of the CdS content on the nanocomposites, initial RhB concentration, pH value of the investigated system, and dosage of CdS/g-C 3 N 4 nanocomposites on the visible-light photocatalytic activity were systematically investigated. The results revealed that the visible-light photocatalytic activity of g-C 3 N 4 -based photocatalysts was significantly improved by surface-hybridization of a small amount of CdS nanoparticles, increased as both CdS content on the nanocomposites and dosage of CdS/g-C 3 N 4 nanocomposites increased, while increased at first and then decreased as both initial RhB concentration and pH value of the investigated system increased. The visible-light photocatalytic mechanism of the CdS/g-C 3 N 4 nanocomposites was discussed.
