Fe-MOF Modified Bubble Coral-Like Carbon Nanofibers for Ultrathin Broadband Microwave Absorption

Weiwei Pei,Hongli Liu,Guanqi Xu,Junjie Zhang,Boshi Gao,Wenshuo Cao,Mingwei Li,Xianlin Xiao,Mingda Liu,Yuhao Liu,Xiaoxiao Huang

Driven by the rapid development of microelectronics and aerospace engineering, lightweight, ultrathin, broadband microwave absorption (MA) materials are urgently required for advanced electromagnetic protection and stealth technologies. Conventional ceramic-derived MA absorbers face inherent bottlenecks of incompatible impedance matching and insufficient attenuation efficiency, severely restricting their application in miniaturized aerospace and electronic systems. A novel bubble coral-like Fe-MOF modified carbonaceous nanofiber composite (BF@CNFs) is fabricated via electrospinning, thermal curing, and high-temperature carbonization, with its microstructure precisely tailored by optimizing polyacrylonitrile/phenolic resin ratio and carbonization heating rate. The optimized BF@CNF-2 delivers a minimum reflection loss of −36.2 dB at 1.3 mm thickness, with an effective absorption bandwidth nearly covering the entire Ku-band (12.0–18.0 GHz). This outstanding performance stems from the synergistic effect of conductive carbon nanofiber scaffolds and Fe-MOF-derived magnetic phases. The work provides a scalable, ceramic-compatible strategy for high-performance MA materials, addressing long-standing technical challenges, with promising prospects in aerospace stealth and electromagnetic shielding.

Fe(VI) enhanced coagulation-ultrafiltration for simultaneous ibuprofen removal and membrane fouling alleviation

Xiaoyuan Zhang,Rui Zeng,Zhenbei Wang,Fei Qi,Chen Li,Yatao Liu,Fan Li,Ziteng Chen,Yujia Yuan,Zhuoran Bai,Yongshun Yu,Jun Nan,Amir Ikhlaq,Shengnan Li

The potential of Fe(VI) enhanced coagulation-ultrafiltration (C-UF) for the simultaneous enhancement of ibuprofen (IBP) removal and membrane alleviation was investigated by comparing Fe(VI)-UF, FeCl 3 -UF, AlCl 3 -UF, Fe(VI)-FeCl 3 -UF, and Fe(VI)-AlCl 3 -UF. The results showed that Fe(VI)-FeCl 3 -UF and Fe(VI)-AlCl 3 -UF achieved IBP removal efficiencies of 66.6% and 76.9%, respectively, which were significantly higher than those obtained with Fe(VI)-UF, FeCl 3 -UF, AlCl 3 -UF. This confirmed that Fe(VI) enhanced C-UF could effectively improve IBP removal compared to individual Fe(VI)-UF or conventional C-UF. This improvement was attributed to additional highly reactive Fe(V)/Fe(IV) intermediates generated by adding metal coagulants to instantaneously activate residual Fe(VI) during the Fe(VI) enhanced C-UF process. In addition, Fe(VI)-FeCl 3 -UF and Fe(VI)-AlCl 3 -UF further alleviated total membrane fouling compared to FeCl 3 -UF and AlCl 3 -UF, with a significant shift of membrane fouling toward reversible fouling. Floc properties, NOM characteristics, and membrane surface characterization were comprehensively analyzed to reveal membrane fouling alleviation mechanisms in Fe(VI) enhanced C-UF. Simultaneous cleavage into smaller molecules and polymerization into larger fractions of NOM by Fe(VI) could reduce the affinity of foulants for membrane surface adsorption and consequently lower irreversible fouling. While Fe(VI) reduction would produce iron-based hydroxides to participate in the growth process of flocs, leading to the formation of flocs with higher density. These flocs would accumulate on membrane surface to form a denser cake layer, which contributed to severe membrane fouling.

Targeting viral Fe-S clusters with TEMPOL confers broad-spectrum anti-coronavirus activity

Leyu Hu,Lexi Gao,Xingwei Fu,Zesheng Rong,Yue Cheng,Yuhan Hou,Lu Han,Xin Ran,Guiwen Guan,Ting Zhou,Lingling Chang,Xiaomin Zhao,Qian Du,Yong Huang,Dewen Tong,Mingjun Zhu

PEDV infection induces intracellular iron accumulation in host cells. • Iron promotes CoV replication by enhancing Fe-S cluster-dependent RdRp activity. • TEMPOL suppresses CoV replication by disrupting viral Fe-S cluster integrity. • TEMPOL exhibits broad-spectrum anti-CoV activity in vitro and in vivo. • TEMPOL effectively counteracts iron-exacerbated viral pathogenesis in vivo. Coronaviruses (CoVs) can cause severe respiratory and enteric diseases, posing major threats to human health and the livestock industry. However, the host metabolic mechanisms underlying viral replication remain unclear. Using porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) as the primary model, this study investigated the role of iron metabolism in CoV replication and its mechanisms. Our results showed that PEDV infection markedly induced intracellular iron accumulation, while exogenous iron supplementation enhanced viral replication and iron chelation suppressed it. Mechanistically, iron enhances viral replication by promoting the formation of iron-sulfur (Fe-S) clusters, essential cofactors for the viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp). Based on these findings, we further evaluated the antiviral activity of TEMPOL, a small molecule targeting viral Fe-S clusters. TEMPOL reduced RdRp activity and effectively inhibited PEDV replication. Moreover, TEMPOL exhibited broad-spectrum antiviral activity against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), infectious bronchitis virus (IBV), and porcine deltacoronavirus (PDCoV). Importantly, TEMPOL effectively reversed FAC-promoted viral pathogenesis, alleviating tissue lesions and clinical symptoms across multiple CoV animal models. Collectively, this study reveals a key role of iron metabolism in CoV replication and suggests that targeting viral Fe-S clusters may provide a novel strategy for anti-CoV therapy against diverse CoVs.

Atomically Dispersed Fe‐Modified SnS for Sn‐Centered Peroxymonosulfate Activation Toward Acetaminophen Degradation

Shuhui Liu,Yantao Wang,Ya Liu,Jingkai Lin,Shaobin Wang,Wenjie Tian

SnS is a low‐cost and environmentally benign semiconductor for photocatalysis and piezocatalysis, but its direct use for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation remains limited. Here, we develop a facile Fe substitution strategy to construct atomically dispersed Fe‒S in SnS nanostructures (Fe‐SnS) for efficient PMS activation. The catalytic activity shows a volcano‐shaped dependence on Fe incorporation, with 5% Fe‐SnS (Fe/Sn molar ratio of 4.63%) giving the optimal performance, achieving efficient acetaminophen (APAP) removal with a rate constant of 1.23 min ‒1 , which is 3.84 and 176‐fold higher than those of SnS and commercial SnS, respectively. In situ X‐ray absorption spectroscopy reveals a site‐dependent activation mechanism in which Sn sites directly coordinate with O in PMS. Density functional theory calculations further show that Fe incorporation induces local electronic redistribution around neighboring Sn sites and enhances the Sn–PMS interfacial interaction. Fe incorporation also attenuates the negative surface charge of SnS, further facilitating PMS interaction. Mechanism studies revealed that APAP degradation proceeds via sulfate and hydroxyl radical‐dominated pathway. These findings clarify the distinct roles of host Sn and atomically dispersed Fe sites in PMS activation. Atomically dispersed Fe regulates the local electronic environment and surface properties of SnS, while PMS preferentially coordinates to Sn through Sn–O interaction. Fe incorporation further enhances the Sn–O PMS interfacial interaction, facilitating Sn‐centered PMS activation and the generation of SO 4 •− /•OH for APAP degradation, thereby clarifying the distinct roles of host Sn and atomic Fe sites.

The Application of Hangman Fe(IV) Corrole in the Baeyer–Villiger Oxidation Reaction

Yi-Feng Qiu,Xu-You Cao,Feng Li,Guo-Chao Liang,Hao Zhang,Fu-Rong Wang,Hai Yang Liu

A series of new hangman iron corroles with different electronic structure and pending aldehyde group were prepared and used as catalyst in Baeyer–Villiger (B–V) oxidation reactions. The results show that hangman iron corroles exhibit faster reaction rates and higher ε-caprolactone yields as compared to triaryl iron 5,10,15-tri(pentafluorophenyl) corrole (Fe(tpfc)Cl). With the increase in the electron-withdrawing ability of the meso-position substituents of hangman iron corrole, the yield of caprolactone also increases. Under optimal conditions, the best hangman iron corrole bearing two pentafluorophenyl groups (FePXC) may give a yield of 97% at only 0.07 mol% catalyst loading. The turnover number (TON) of the FePXC catalyst could be up to 2100 in a gram-scale test of oxidation of cyclohexanone. This work demonstrates the good potential of hangman corroles in B–V oxidation.

MIL-100(Fe)/melamine sponge composites for adsorption and detection of malachite green

Shan Huang,Danyu Lv,Yuhuan Geng,Fuhao Yue,Xinan Zeng,Mengwai Woo,Zhong Han,Ji Ma

Malachite green (MG) is a toxic contaminant commonly found in aquaculture, making its effective removal and detection crucially important. In this study, MIL-100(Fe) was synthesized via a microwave-assisted hydrothermal method under optimized conditions (150 °C, 200 W, 30 min; FeCl₃·6H 2 O:H₃BTC = 2:3). The resulting material exhibited excellent structural stability, a high specific surface area (1169.9 m 2 /g), and a remarkable MG adsorption capacity of 714.29 mg/g. To enable practical application and reusability, MIL-100(Fe) was immobilized onto a melamine sponge (MeS) using polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) as binding agent, forming a recyclable MeS/PVDF/MOF composite. When applied for solid-phase extraction of MG in conjunction with UV detection, the composite demonstrated high recovery rates (92.1–99.4 %), a low detection limit (2.29 μg/L), and consistent performance with over 80 % recovery after six reuse cycles in both real fish and wastewater samples. This study presents a simple, efficient and sustainable strategy for the adsorption and detection of MG in aquatic food matrices.

Highly dispersed copper oxide-loaded hollow Fe-MFI zeolite for enhanced tetracycline degradation

Guojun Lv,Tao Wang,Xuyang Zou,Jialing Shen,Jiangzhang Wang,Yan Chen,Fumin Wang,Xubin Zhang

Framework doped iron materials such as Fe-MFI zeolite is an important heterogeneous Fenton-like catalyst for tetracycline degradation. Introduction of mesopore can enhance the tetracycline degradation performance for hollow Fe-MFI zeolite, however its positive effect is extremely limited ascribed to the essence of active sites of confined framework iron species. In this work, highly dispersed copper oxide on the hollow Fe-MFI zeolite CuO/FeS-1 was synthesized via an impregnation procedure and applied as heterogeneous catalyst for the tetracycline degradation. The synthesized CuO/FeS-1 was characterized by Scanning electron microscopy, Transmission electron microscopy , X-ray diffraction, UV–vis absorption spectrometry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy , Nitrogen adsorption-desorption and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. At pH = 7.0, CuO/FeS-1 revealed the highest tetracycline degradation rate of 99.6 % at experimental conditions: [TCE] = 30 mg/L, [PMS] = 1.0 g/L, [Catalyst] = 1.0 g/L, 333 K, and the largest degradation rate constant of 1.26 min −1 , which was 3.4 folds of FeS-1 zeolite and 1.8 folds of CuO . Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) technology disclosed that •OH, SO 4 • − , 1 O 2 and •O 2 − species were all the active species for CuO/FeS-1 zeolite in the tetracycline degradation. Furthermore, possible intermediates in the degradation of tetracycline over CuO/FeS-1 zeolite were identified with liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS).

Fe–Cu Alloy Nanozymes with Enhanced Oxidase-Like Activity for Multiplex Antioxidant Detection

Yunying Wang,Yanyan Yu,Ying He,Yun Liu

Single-atom iron catalysts have emerged as promising mimics of oxidases; however, strategies to enhance their intrinsic catalytic activity remain underexplored. Herein, waste pitch and eggshells are utilized for fabricating high-performance nanozymes by coloading nanocopper and iron single atoms onto nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (Fe/Cu@NCNTs). It has been demonstrated that copper nanoparticles serve as a critical modulator, electronically tuning the iron sites, which increases the Fe2+/Fe3+ ratio and promotes the formation of Fe–Cu nanoalloys. These synergistic effects significantly enhance the oxidase-like activity of the catalyst. The optimized Fe/Cu@NCNTs exhibit a 48.7% higher specific activity and superior substrate affinity compared with the Fe@NCNTs counterpart. Leveraging this enhanced catalytic performance, a smartphone-assisted colorimetric sensing platform was developed for the rapid visual detection of multiple analytes. Furthermore, by incorporating a three-channel sensor array (TMB, ABTS, and OPD) with pattern recognition analysis, the platform accurately discriminates between nine antioxidants at concentrations as low as 10 μM. This work not only provides valuable insight into the mechanistic role of copper in enhancing the oxidase-like activity of iron single-atom catalysts but also offers a versatile and high-throughput sensing platform that advances the application of nanozymes in complex sample analysis.

Asymmetric Fe–Co dual-atom sites enable electron-transfer-dominated peracetic acid oxidation

Mingjun Xie,Yuying Han,Congting Sun,Shuyan Zang

Heterogeneous activation of peracetic acid (PAA) is promising for advanced water purification but still suffers from nonselective radical production, matrix interference, and inefficient electron transfer at poorly defined sites. Here, we design an asymmetric Fe–Co dual-atom catalyst (FeCo-DAC) anchored on N-doped porous carbon, effectively steering PAA activation toward a surface-confined, electron-transfer-dominated pathway. FeCo-DAC/PAA exhibits rapid bisphenol A (BPA) degradation ( k obs =1.90 min −1 ), surpassing single-metal counterparts (Fe-SAC 1.61 min −1 ; Co-SAC 0.41 min −1 ). EPR reveal O₂•⁻dominated and ¹O₂ dominated pathways on Fe‑SAC and Co‑SAC, respectively, while FeCo‑DAC indicating an interfacial electron‑transfer‑dominated mechanism. Mechanistic analyses reveal that electronically asymmetric Fe–N 4 and Co–N₃ sites cooperatively polarize adsorbed PAA to form a high-potential intermediate, enabling direct electron transfer from BPA within a closed interfacial loop with minimal radical release. The FeCo-DAC/PAA system efficiently degrades diverse micropollutants (BPA, BPS, BPC ≈ 100 %; RhB, SMX ≥96 %) and achieves robust TOC removal (52 %-63 %) in complex real-water matrices with low metal leaching (Fe²⁺ ≈ 78.4 μg/L; Co²⁺ ≈ 189.5 μg/L). Additionally, embedding FeCo-DAC into a PVDF membrane yields continuous-flow BPA removal (95 %-100 %) over 600 min, underscoring the practical potential of this asymmetric dual-site catalyst for sustainable, selective water purification.

Monomer-coordination synthesis of Fe-Nx nanofiber catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction

Xu Meng,Qingliang Guo,Zigeng Liu,Wei Wang

Developing low-cost, high-performance non-precious-metal catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is crucial for clean-energy technologies. Herein, we propose a “monomer-coordination/in-situ polymerization” strategy in which inexpensive acrylonitrile monomers are pre-coordinated with Fe 3+ before radical polymerization, yielding uniformly Fe-doped polyacrylonitrile (PAN) (denoted Fe + PAN). Subsequent electrospinning and pyrolysis of this precursor afford Fe-N x nanofiber catalysts (denoted O-Fe-N-C). Compared with the conventional “polymerize-then-dope-Fe” route (denoted T-Fe-N-C), this approach markedly reduces the steric hindrance of PAN chains, strengthens Fe-N interactions, increases the density of Fe-N x active sites after pyrolysis, and suppresses Fe agglomeration. In 0.1 M KOH, O-Fe-N-C delivers an ORR half-wave potential of 0.878 V (vs RHE), outperforming commercial Pt/C. When employed as the air cathode in a Zn-air battery, the O-Fe-N-C cell exhibits an open-circuit voltage of 1.46 V and a peak power density of 133.91 mW cm −2 at 205.7 mA cm −2 , surpassing the Pt/C benchmark. This work provides a molecular-level design paradigm for scalable synthesis of low-cost, high-performance Fe-N x ORR catalysts.

Degradation of Chlorophenols via Peroxymonosulfate Activation by Fe-Co Bimetallic Single Atom Catalyst

Zhen Zhang,Chenghui Luo,Mingxin Qin,Qvqv Jing,Lei Hao,Xinhua Xu

Fe-based single-atom catalysts (Fe-SACs) are able to enhance the Peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation effectively just as a result of metal active sites that are precisely defined and atomically dispersed. The Fe 2 Co 1 CN catalyst synthesized in this work exhibits excellent catalytic activity toward PMS activation: the Fe 2 Co 1 CN/PMS system achieved nearly 100% 2-chlorophenol (2-CP) removal, a sharp contrast to only ∼1.5% removal by PMS alone. Corresponding, a mineralization rate of 78.3% was attained within 2 hours, coupled with extremely low metal leaching concentrations — evidencing the Fe 2 Co 1 CN catalyst’s superior structural stability and high catalytic efficiency in PMS activation. Together with its non-radical PMS activation mechanism, these merits highlight the catalyst’s potential as an efficient, stable, and selective candidate for practical wastewater treatment applications.
