Controllable Synthesis of Porous 1T-MoS2 with Large Surface Area via Continuous Hydrothermal System

Zhiyuan Yu,Tianyi Huang,Shafqat Ullah,Yujun Wang,Guangsheng Luo

1T-phase MoS2, a versatile two-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenide, is typically synthesized using a one-pot hydrothermal method. However, inadequate control of the sulfurization, reduction, and crystallization processes in the autoclave leads to multilayer 1T-MoS2 with high crystallinity, a small surface area, and few defects. Considering the aforementioned issues, a two-stage microreactor continuous hydrothermal flow synthesis (CHFS) system coupled with accurate control and rapid processing is used to prepare 1T-MoS2 with abundant voids and a large surface area under 250 °C and 4.0–4.5 MPa. And density functional theory calculations reveal that nitrogenous species, acting as reductants and electron donors, lower the energy of 1T-MoS2 by intercalation and surface adsorption, facilitating its swift synthesis within the presulfurization stage for 10 min and reduction stage for 24 min. The precisely controlled synthesis of porous 1T-MoS2, originating from prenucleation clusters, results in a large surface area of 201.5 m2/g, concentrated mesopores of 2–5 nm, and a pore volume of 0.58 cm3/g. Moreover, a significant transformation from the 1T to the 2H phase is prevented by rapid cooling downstream of the CHFS system.

Morphologies controllable synthesis of MoS2 by hot-injection method: from quantum dots to nanosheets

Liu Yueli,Zhong Qiaohui,Chen Keqiang,Zhou Jing,Yang Xue,Chen Wen

Layered MoS 2 , which is treated as an alternative candidate of graphene, has attracted great attention due to its large intrinsic band gap and relatively high carrier mobility. It is relatively convenient and inexpensive to prepare MoS 2 through chemical synthesis route. Herein, a novel solution-based hot-injection method is used to prepare MoS 2 . Controlling the reaction time leads to the variation of MoS 2 morphologies, which present as quantum dots and nanosheets. Detail studies are carried out to investigate the formation mechanism of MoS 2 . The results indicate that the formation of layered MoS 2 nanosheets follows a bottom-up process, which includes three steps in the order of quantum dots, small pieces and large area nanosheets.

Fabrication of MoS2/CdS/TiO2 composites for photoreduction of U(VI) under visible light

Yanxue Yue,Jingting Xiao,Weiyu Zhu,Bo Zhang,Rongbo Hou,Alhadi Ishag,Yubing Sun

The introduction of MoS 2 is beneficial to the separation and transfer of photogenerated electron–hole pairs for CdS/TiO 2 . Herein, MoS 2 /CdS/TiO 2 composites were synthesized by one-step solvothermal method at 200 °C and applied to photocatalytic reduction of U(VI) from aqueous solutions. The batch characterizations showed the irregular spherical MoS 2 /CdS/TiO 2 composites with low bandgap (1.95 eV) and high chemical stability. MoS 2 /CdS/TiO 2 composites displayed the rapid removal rate of U(VI) (more than 90 % under 15 min illumination), good regeneration (> 91 % after four cycles) due to the highly efficient separation of electron-hole pair. The possible photocatalytic pathway was demonstrated to be the main active ·O 2 − radical by quenching experiments, ESR and XPS analysis. This work highlights the potential application of MoS 2 /CdS/TiO 2 on removal of radioactive wastewater in the actual remediation.

Magnetically Recoverable Multifunctional MoS2 Composite Nanosheets for Water Disinfection and Purification with High Efficiency

Caiyun Xu,Chunlei Ou,Junqin Li,Jing Yang,Shidong Yang,Wangdan Qi,Yuze Luo,Luo Hai,Le Deng,Dinggeng He

Due to the complexity of the actual polluted water components, the development of efficient and economical multifunctional materials has great significance and value in the remediation of polluted water. In this study, we have employed MoS2 nanosheets as a carrier to sequentially load magnetic Fe3O4 and ZnO nanoparticles via the electrostatic interaction, yielding a three-in-one MoS2/Fe3O4/ZnO (MFZ) composite nanosheet. The prepared MFZ could catalyze the conversion of H2O2 into hydroxyl radicals (•OH), induce intracellular oxidative stress in situ by nanosized ZnO or Zn2+, and produce photonic hyperpyrexia to promote the catalytic generation of •OH. In vitro antibacterial assays demonstrated that MFZ had high-performance multimodal elimination against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus in the presence of H2O2 and an 808 nm laser. Moreover, MFZ could also catalyze the rapid degradation of organic pollutants in water including tetracycline (TC), methylene blue (MB), Congo red (CR), methyl orange (MO), and rhodamine B (RhB), which was mainly attributed to the strong oxidization of •OH. Not surprisingly, MFZ displayed satisfactory capacity for killing pathogenic bacteria and removing organic pollutants in real polluted water samples, and importantly, the MFZ could be efficiently recovered by applying an external magnetic field. Therefore, the magnetically recoverable MFZ composite nanomaterial proposed in this work is a versatile and sustainable alternative for future water disinfection and purification.

Improved performance in 0D/2D mixed dimensional homojunction MoS2 photodetectors by enhancing light absorption

Lin Zhang,Peiyu Cheng,Yongqiang Du,Quan Wang

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) possesses excellent potential for applications in the field of optoelectronic detection. However, the atomic-level thickness of the monolayer MoS2 leads to weak light absorption and a restricted absorption spectrum. The performance of monolayer MoS2 devices has reached a bottleneck. Fortunately, the above issues can be effectively solved by coupling with various types of photosensitivity nanostructures. In this work, we integrated MoS2 quantum dots (QDs) with high efficient light absorption with monolayer MoS2 to fabricate 0D/2D MoS2 QDs/MoS2 hybrid dimensional homojunction photodetectors. In this structure, MoS2 is used as an efficient carrier transport channel, while MoS2 QDs act as effective light absorbers to enhance the local electric field around MoS2. The synergistic effect of MoS2 QDs and MoS2 is utilized to accelerate the migration rate of photogenerated carriers in the structure, and in particular, the highest responsivity of the MoS2 QDs/MoS2 hybrid device is 27.6 A W−1 with the detectivity as high as 2.13 × 1011 Jones under 532 nm laser, which is an order of magnitude higher than that of the pristine MoS2 devices. The synergistic effect of MoS2 QDs with monolayer MoS2 is verified by finite-difference time-domain simulation. The results will pave the way for the future development of high-performance MoS2-based photodetectors.

Influence of MoS2/TiO2 on the behavior of heavy oil hydrogenation and coke generation

Xiaoning Zhang,Buning Chen,Jianwei Wang,Yusheng Zhou,Xueli Huang,He Huang

The high tolerance to feed oil makes slurry bed hydrocracking technology one of the main streams of research, but the relationship between hydrogenation and deactivation of slurry bed catalysts remains unclear. In this study, the distribution of vacuum residue (VR) hydrogenation products, coke generation, and catalyst deactivation patterns were analyzed using MoS 2 /TiO 2 as the hydrogenation catalyst. With an increase in the reaction temperature or decrease in the hydrogen pressure, the cracking performance gradually improved, the hydrogenation saturation effect gradually weakened, and the oil-to-coke ratio (OCR) gradually decreased. This implies that the influence of the lightning effect from coke generation gradually increased. The conversion rate of VR to gasoline and diesel components is 3.8 times higher than the conversion rate to coke and gas. At lower temperatures, coke was dominated by graphitic carbon encapsulated on the catalyst surface. As the temperature increased, the content and lamellar diameter of graphitic carbon decreased, and the content of amorphous carbon increased. An increase in temperature also promoted the dealkylation reaction and coke condensation, resulting in a decrease in pyrolytic activity. VR hydrogenation was subjected to kinetic analysis, and a model for MoTi-5-catalyzed VR deactivation was developed using OCR to deduce the degree of contribution of coke generation to lightning.

Interfacial engineering of CoMoO4@MoS2/CoS2 heterostructure for enhancing electrochemical nitrate reduction to ammonia

Fangwei Ma,Xiaoyang Yang,Wei Jiang,Xin Cui,Guangping Lei,Haoyu Qiu,Zeyi Liu,Jiafeng Wan,Yi-Fu Liu

Electrochemical nitrate reduction reaction (e-NO3RR) to ammonia not only can effectively remove nitrate pollutants but also is a green strategy for ammonia synthesis. However, the conversion from NO3− to NH3 involves some undesired by-products and severe competing hydrogen evolution reactions (HER), limiting its further development. Herein, the rodlike CoMoO4@MoS2/CoS2 heterostructure with rich interfaces is easily designed via hydrothermal followed by gas-phase sulfurization method for efficient electrochemical nitrate reduction to NH3. Benefiting from the interface effect, the optimal CoMoO4@MoS2/CoS2-5 exhibits an excellent e-NO3RR performance with a high NH3 Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 96.11% and an NH3 yield rate of 0.45 mmol h−1 mgcat−1 at −0.8 V (vs RHE), which is superior to that of CoMoO4 and MoS2/CoS2. The validation experiments suggest that the heterointerface can inhibit the generation of by-products and competing HER, and greatly facilitate the hydrogenation process.

Investigation of tribological properties of hydrothermally synthesized halloysite composites with carbon, MoS2 and CuO

Yuan Qin,Yongfeng Yang,Mingxia Wu,Yi Yang,Gang Yang

To enhance the antiwear properties of halloysite nanotubes (HNTs), composites of C/HNTs, CuO/HNTs, and MoS 2 /HNTs were prepared using hydrothermal method, and their tribological properties were investigated. The results indicated that the wear resistance was ranked as follows during rotational motion: PAO10 oil < CuO/HNTs (9.1%) < MoS 2 /HNTs (34.5%) < HNTs (41.8%) < C/HNTs (56.4%). In reciprocal motion, the antiwear performance was ordered as follows: PAO10 oil < HNTs < MoS 2 /HNTs < CuO/HNTs < C/HNTs. The consistently superior antiwear performance of C/HNTs can be attributed to the synergistic effect of carbon transfer with HNTs, which rapidly generate a homogeneous carbon film embedded in Fe 2 O 3 , Fe 3 O 4 and SiO x . In contrast, MoS 2 and CuO exhibited inhibitory and competitive effects on the film formation of HNTs.

Ligand-controlled photocatalysis of sulfur dots/MoS2 nanocomposite for degradation of dye and antibiotic

Lihua Shen,Yanwei Su,Kunpeng Zhao,Chunxia Yu,Jundan Tang,Yuangang Li,Na Liu

Manipulating surface organic ligands has emerged as a useful strategy to enhance the efficiency of catalysis. Here, a novel photocatalyst of S dots/MoS 2 nanocomposite with the ligand of polyethylene glycol 400 (PEG) or poly (sodium-p-styrenesulfonate) (PSS) was synthesized. Compared to pure S dots and MoS 2 , S dots/MoS 2 nanocomposite modified with PEG inhibited the photocatalytic activity, while the S dots/MoS 2 nanocomposite modified with PSS exhibited improved photocatalysis efficiency. And degradation efficiency of S dots/MoS 2 -PSS was achieved to be 88% (120 min) and 83% (90 min) for degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) and Doxycycline hydrochloride (DOX), respectively. It was found that the ligand mainly affect the energy gap and the conduction band potential of the photocatalyst, leading to different photocatalysis activity. When S dots-PSS and MoS 2 were combined, the photoelectric conversion performance was enhanced and the recombine of the photogenerated carriers were depressed. And the low conduction band potential of photogenerated electron facilitate to produce of •OH and •O 2 - radical. This study provides a new photocatalysts and also give a reference on the ligands option of designing efficient photocatalysts.

Investigate on preparation and dry tribological behaviors of onion-like carbon/MoS2 polyimide coatings

XingPeng Fei,Shusheng Liu,Ayush Subedi,Xinkai Ding,Enzhu Hu,Kunhong Hu

The development of biomass materials can effectively mitigate the scarcity of energy and minimize resource waste. In this work, onion-like biomass carbon nanoparticles (OLCs) were prepared using rice husk ash (RHA) which was subjected to a high-temperature graphitization reaction catalyzed by iron nitrate. OLCs/molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) composite particles were prepared and incorporated into polyimide (PI), and a composite coating of OLCs/MoS 2 /PI with excellent tribological properties was successfully prepared. The tribological properties of coatings were evaluated using a controlled atmosphere tribometer (WMT-2E) under dry friction conditions. The related friction and wear mechanism of PI coatings including particles was clarified by the SEM/EDS, XPS, HRTEM and DFT theory. Results show that the wear rate of the three composite coatings of polyimide with OLC, MoS 2 , and OLC/MoS 2 particles were reduced by 52.9 %, 48.2 %, and 58.1 %, respectively. For the coefficient of friction, PI-0.20 OLC/MoS 2 coating material decreased by 16.1 %. Anti-wear and friction reduction mechanism is attributed to the presence of a transfer film on the surface of the steel balls. The addition of MoS 2 facilitated the deposition of nanoparticles, which further improved the stability and densification of the friction film, resulting in better protection of the metal surface against severe wear. Besides, the component structure changes of OLCs and MoS 2 and adsorption energy of friction products on the surface of tribo-pairs were also important reasons for clarifying the modification tribological behavior of PI coatings including three kinds of nanoparticles.

Wu Haixia,Han Xiao,Guo Xinrui,Wen Yiyun,Zheng Bin,Liu Biming

The performance of catalytic ability of MFe 2 O 4 /MoS 2 in the ozonation process was investigated in this work. The synthesized MnFe 2 O 4 /MoS 2 was optimize prepared and then characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photo-electron spectroscopy, and magnetic saturation strength. The results showed that when C phenol  = 200 mg/L, initial pH = 9.0, Q  = 0.10 L/min, and C MnFe2O4/MoS2  = 0.10 g/L, MnFe 2 O 4 /MoS 2 addition improved the degradation efficiency of phenol by 20.0%. The effects of pH, catalyst dosage, and inorganic ions on the phenol removal by the MnFe 2 O 4 /MoS 2 catalytic ozonation were investigated. Five cycle experiments proved that MnFe 2 O 4 /MoS 2 had good recyclability and stability. MnFe 2 O 4 /MoS 2 also showed good catalytic performance in the treatment of coal chemical wastewater pesticide wastewater. The MnFe 2 O 4 doped with MoS 2 could provide abundant surface active sites for ozone and promote the stable cycle of Mn 2+ /Mn 3+ and Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ , thus generating large amounts of •OH and improving the degradation of phenol by ozonation. The MnFe 2 O 4 /MoS 2 /ozonation treatment system provides a technical reference and theoretical basis for industrial wastewater treatment.

One-step synthesis of 2D/2D gC3N4/MoS2 composites for effective photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Xinru Li,Shujian Wang,Yuchen Li,Hai Huang,Miao Li,Peiyu Long,Xiyue Cao,Jiaxin Zhang,Mingming Zhou,Zhifu Zhou,Shijian Lu,Kunpeng Ding,Maochang Liu

Two-dimensional (2D) heterostructures have proven their efficiency in separating charges. Herein, a gC 3 N 4 /MoS 2 (CN/MoS 2 ) photocatalyst, in the form of 2D/2D van der Waals heterojunction with a type-II band alignment, was synthesized using a novel one-step method. The resulting in-situ formed heterojunction interface enhances electron transfer from gC 3 N 4 to MoS 2 . The CN/MoS 2 photocatalyst exhibits exceptional activity in generating hydrogen from water under simulated solar light. Its hydrogen production rate was 1285 μmol/h/g, which was approximately 3 times higher compared to gC 3 N 4 . This superiority is due to a significant increase in photogenerated carrier density and efficient charge separation facilitated by the type-II heterojunction. This study demonstrates a straightforward one-step approach for synthesizing 2D/2D composite photocatalysts, highlighting the effective synergy between different 2D materials in promoting hydrogen generation.
