A novel solar-triggered MIL-125(Ti)/g-C3N4/SA composite aerogel with high catalytic activity for degradation of organic contaminants

Jie Zhao,Bingzhang Li,Zongyang Liu,Danling Dai,Yuqi Li,Ronghui Shi,Hui Zhang

Sodium alginate (SA) aerogels have shown outstanding potential as regenerative adsorbent materials in the field of wastewater purification. Although SA aerogel adsorption has been demonstrated as a simple and resultful method for removing dyes, it has the limitation that it only transfers or concentrates dyes on the adsorbate, and does not actually degrade them. In this study, a three-dimensional (3D) MIL-125/g-C 3 N 4 /SA (CNTi-125@SA) composite aerogel with visible light photocatalytic activity was achieved for photocatalytic degradation of organic dyes, via in-situ growth, blending and freeze-drying strategy. The results demonstrate that CNTi-125@SA has high catalytic activity for the dyes rhodamine B (RhB), methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO), and the degradation rate can reach up to 99.23%. Impressively, the composite aerogel exhibits excellent antibacterial ability, and the antibacterial rate can reach up to 100% against E. coli . In addition, the developed composite aerogel has excellent reusability and stability, and the degradation efficiency can still reach 85% after seven repeated tests. Owing to their high catalytic activity, excellent antibacterial properties and stability, the CNTi-125@SA composite aerogel can be potentially used in a wide range of dye wastewater purification.

Robust fluorine-free colorful superhydrophobic PDMS/NH2-MIL-125(Ti)@cotton fabrics for improved ultraviolet resistance and efficient oil–water separation

Yang Yingying,Huang Wei,Guo Zengpei,Zhang Shiyu,Wu Feng,Huang Jingjing,Yang Hongjun,Zhou Yingshan,Xu Weilin,Gu Shaojin

Abstract Superhydrophobic cotton fabrics with improved ultraviolet resistance were prepared via in situ growing NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti)(Ti-MOF) nanoparticles on cotton fibers and subsequently coating with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) under room temperature. The synergetic effect of Ti-MOFs nanoparticles and PDMS was critical and essential for obtaining a superhydrophobic coating with anti-UV property. The surface microstructure, chemical composition, and superhydrophobic property of the as-prepared fabrics were characterized by K/S value, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, and water contact angle (WCA) measurements. The as-prepared cotton fabrics not merely exhibited desirable superhydrophobic property with a water contact angle (WCA) of 154.7 ± 0.7° and a sliding angle of 3.6°, but also displayed the considerable UV resistance. The oil–water separation, stability of UV protection and superhydrophobicity were also investigated. The superhydrophobicity, anti-ultraviolet property, and K/S value of as-prepared PDMS/Ti-MOFs@cotton fabrics were stable after 300 cycles of abrasion and 5 cycles of washing. The facile synthesis technique provided a simple method for scalable construction of multifunctional fabrics. Graphic abstract

Novel Cr/Ti bimetallic polyethylene catalysts synthesized through introduction of chromium species into the (SiO2/MgR2/MgCl2)·TiClx Ziegler-Natta catalyst

Yi Zhou,Xuelian He,Ting Fu,Ning Zhao,Boping Liu

A series of novel Cr/Ti bimetallic polyethylene catalysts were successfully synthesized for the first time through introduction of chromium species into the (SiO 2 /MgR 2 /MgCl 2 )·TiCl x Ziegler-Natta catalysts. The bimetallic catalysts , which showed high activity, were simply prepared by refluxing titanium choloride with chromium modified silica gel/alkyl Mg adducts. Moreover, the effects of chromium content and calcination temperature were investigated in detail. The results obtained in the study were used to systematically discuss a clear relationship between the catalyst preparation condition and the relative performance of different metal active centers. Factors including surface hydroxyl content, catalyst performance in homo-polymerization, ethylene/1-hexene copolymerization were systematic investigated. Comparably, the chromium modified catalyst shows catalytic performance with 89% higher activity, 41.5% higher hydrogen response and 46.3% higher 1-hexene incorporation than the original (SiO 2 /MgR 2 /MgCl 2 )·TiCl x Ziegler-Natta catalyst. A new schematic model was proposed to explain the accelerated activation process of the bimetallic catalysts with kinetic and SEM results: chromium active sites on the outer surface of support react 10 times quicker than Ti active sites initially and help to crack the catalyst particle in the first stage; then the released inner surface active sites start to accelerate the polymerization reaction in the second stage.

A reactive electrochemical filter system with an excellent penetration flux porous Ti/SnO2–Sb filter for efficient contaminant removal from water

Kui Yang,Hui Lin,Shangtao Liang,Ruzhen Xie,Sihao Lv,Junfeng Niu,Jie Chen,Yongyou Hu

Tubular porous Ti/SnO2–Sb filters with excellent penetration flux (∼61.94 m3 m−2 h−1 bar−1) and electrochemical activity were prepared by a sol–gel method using low-cost porous titanium filters as the substrates. The porous Ti/SnO2–Sb filters were used as anodic reactive electrochemical membranes to develop reactive electrochemical filter systems, by combining membrane filtration technology with the electrooxidation process, for water treatment. A convection-enhanced rate constant of 4.35 × 10−4 m s−1 was achieved for Fe(CN)64− oxidation, which approached the kinetic limit and is the highest reported in an electrochemical system. The electrooxidative performance of the reactive electrochemical filter system was evaluated with 50 mg L−1 rhodamine B (RhB). The results showed that the reactive electrochemical filter system in flow-through mode resulted in an 8.6-fold enhancement in RhB oxidation as compared to those in flow-by mode under the same experimental conditions. A normalized rate constant of 5.76 × 10−4 m s−1 for RhB oxidation was observed at an anode potential of 3.04 V vs. SCE, which is much higher than that observed in a reactive electrochemical filter system with carbon nanotubes and/or Ti4O7 (1.7 × 10−5–1.4 × 10−4 m s−1). The electrical energy per order degradation (EE/O) for RhB was as low as 0.28 kW h m−3 in flow-through mode, with a relatively short residence time of 9.8 min. The overall mineralization current efficiency (MCE) was calculated to be 83.6% with ∼99% RhB removal and ∼51% TOC removal. These results illustrate that this reactive electrochemical filter system is expected to be a promising method for water treatment.

Synergistic Effects of Novel Superparamagnetic/Upconversion HA Material and Ti/Magnet Implant on Biological Performance and Long-Term In Vivo Tracking

Xiyu Li,Qin Zou,Yi Man,Wei Li

To solve the clinical challenges presented by the long-term tracking of implanted hydroxyapatite (HA) bone repair material and to investigate the synergistic effects of superparamagnetic HA and a static magnetic field (SMF) on the promotion of osteogenesis, herein a new type of superparamagnetic/upconversion-generating HA material (HYH-Fe) is developed via a two-step doping method, as well as a specially-designed titanium implant with a built-in magnet to provide a local static magnetic field in vivo. The results show that the prepared HYH-Fe material maintains the crystal structure of HA and exhibits good cytocompatibility. The combined use of the superparamagnetic HYH-Fe material and SMF can effectively and synergistically promote osteogenesis/osteointegration surrounding the Ti implants. In addition, the HYH-Fe material exhibits distinct advantages in terms of both long-term fluorescence tracking and microcomputed tomography (micro-CT) tracking. The new material and tracking strategy in this study provide scientific feasibility and will have important clinical value for long-term tracking and evaluation of implanted materials and the bone repair effect.

In-situ synthesis of TiO2 network nanoporous structure on Ti wire substrate and its application in fiber dye sensitized solar cells

Hong Tao,Guo-jia Fang,Wei-jun Ke,Wei Zeng,Jing Wang

In this paper, we explore a two-step treatment method to modify the Ti wires which are used as anode substrates of fiber dye sensitized solar cells (FDSSCs). A special kind of network nanoporous structure is formed on the surface of Ti wire substrates through sodium hydroxide hydrothermal reaction and titanium tetrachloride (TiCl 4 ) assistant treatment. Nanoporous structures with different sizes are in-situ grown on the Ti wire substrates by changing the hydrothermal reaction condition. Then, TiO 2 network nanoporous structures with branch-like nano-structure or 2D nanoflakes are obtained after TiCl 4 treatment. The effects of these network nanoporous structures on the FDSSC performances are investigated intensively. It is found that these special network nanoporous structures between TiO 2 nanoparticle active layer and Ti wire substrate are beneficial to the connection of the nanoparticle layer and fiber-shaped substrate, thus improving the electron transport rate and prolonging electron lifetime . As a result, the power conversion efficiency of this parallel assembled FDSSC increases to 4.64% from 2.56% after this two-step treatment.

Palladium-decorated hierarchical titania constructed from the metal-organic frameworks NH2-MIL-125(Ti) as a robust photocatalyst for hydrogen evolution

Baolin Yan,Lijuan Zhang,Zhiyong Tang,Mohammad Al-Mamun,Huijun Zhao,Xintai Su

Engineering metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) into hierarchical structured materials is crucial for providing a viable platform to construct efficient catalysts and broaden their applications in energy conversion and photocatalysis. Here, a simple and efficient solid-state pyrolysis of Ti-MOFs (NH 2 -MIL-125) sacrificial template combined with a photo-reduction process was developed to construct a series of hierarchical TiO 2 decorated with Pd nanoparticles. The hierarchical TiO 2 inherited the well-defined rounded rectangular submicron-tablet from NH 2 -MIL-125 precursor and was constituted of uniform anatase TiO 2 nanoparticles with an average size of 12   nm. Furthermore, the photocatalytic activity for the hydrogen production from water-methanol solution was improved by the optimization of the content of Pd as a cocatalyst, and the maximum was achieved with a Pd loading of 1.5%. The rate of H 2 evolution of 1.5% Pd decorated hierarchical TiO 2 (1.5% Pd/TiO 2 ) reached to 979.7   μmol   h −1 and 112.7   μmol   h −1 , under UV–vis light and simulated solar light, respectively. This unusual photocatalytic activity may be resulted from the positive synergetic effect of efficient light absorption, promoted separation and migration of photo-induced electron-hole carriers. The work highlights the potential of the MOFs-based hierarchical TiO 2 in the photocatalytic water splitting under solar light.

Hydrothermal fabrication of few-layer MoS2 nanosheets within nanopores on TiO2 derived from MIL-125(Ti) for efficient photocatalytic H2 evolution

Fei Ye,Houfen Li,Hongtao Yu,Shuo Chen,Xie Quan

Protons tend to bond strongly with unsaturated-coordinate S element located at the edge of nano-MoS 2 and are consequently reduced to H 2 . Therefore, increasing the active S atoms quantity will be a feasible approach to enhance hydrogen evolution. Herein we developed a porous TiO 2 derived from metal organic frameworks (MOFs) as scaffold to restrict the growth and inhibit the aggregation of MoS 2 nanosheets. As a result, the thickness of the prepared MoS 2 nanosheets was less than 3   nm (1–4 layers), with more edges and active S atoms being exposed. This few-layer MoS 2 -porous TiO 2 exhibits a H 2 evolution rate of 897.5   μmol   h −1   g −1 , which is nearly twice as much as free-stand MoS 2 nanosheets and twenty times more than physical mixture of MoS 2 with porous TiO 2 . The high performance is attributed to that more active edge sites in few-layer MoS 2 -porous TiO 2 are exposed than pure MoS 2. This work provides a new method to construct MOFs derived porous structures for controlling MoS 2 to expose active sites for HER.

Hot isostatic pressing of in-situ TiB/Ti-6Al-4V composites with novel reinforcement architecture, enhanced hardness and elevated tribological properties

Chao Cai,Bo Song,Chunlei Qiu,Lifan Li,Pengju Xue,Qingsong Wei,Jianxin Zhou,Hai Nan,Hongxia Chen,Yusheng Shi

In this study, titanium borides reinforced Ti-6Al-4V composites have been successfully prepared by hot isostatic pressing (HIPing). The microstructure of the as-fabricated samples was investigated using X-ray diffraction technique, secondary electron microscopy and electron backscatter diffraction and the mechanical properties evaluated through micro-hardness and wear resistance measurements together with nano-indentation. It was found that during HIPing the additive particles TiB 2 have transformed into TiB needles which tend to decorate at prior particle boundaries of the consolidated powder particles to form a network structure. Under the same HIPing condition, the needles became increasingly coarser and agglomerated with increased addition of TiB 2 . The micro-hardness of the synthesized materials increased with increased volume fraction of TiB. Nano-indentation measurement demonstrates that the TiB network structure shows much higher nanohardness than the surrounding matrix regions. The friction coefficient of the synthesized composites decreased continuously with increased volume fraction of TiB, indicating improved wear resistance. High resolution transmission electron microscopy analysis on wear debris revealed the formation of a series of oxides suggesting that chemical reaction between alloy elements and oxygen in air may have happened. It is thus believed that the wearing of the current samples is a result of both friction and chemical reaction.

Carbon nitride coupled Ti-SBA15 catalyst for visible-light-driven photocatalytic reduction of Cr (VI) and the synergistic oxidation of phenol

Fenghui Liu,Jie Yu,Guangyuan Tu,Ling Qu,Jiacheng Xiao,Yongdi Liu,Lingzhi Wang,Juying Lei,Jinlong Zhang

In this study, carbon nitride was loaded into the titanium incorporated SBA-15 mesoporous silica (denoted as Ti-SBA15-CN) by a two-step vapor condensation of dicyandiamide. The as-prepared sample was characterized by various spectroscopy techniques. Photocatalytic reduction of Cr (VI) in aqueous solution was investigated using Ti-SBA15-CN under visible-light irradiation. By introducing Ti into the SBA-15 framework structure, the visible light driven photocatalytic activity of the obtained Ti-SBA15-CN was higher than SBA15-CN and the photocatalytic activity exhibited a rise with the increase of Ti contents. It was because the presence of Ti moiety could promote the separation of the photo-generated charge carriers in carbon nitride, leading to the enhancement of the photocatalytic activity. The addition of phenol further enhanced the photocatalytic reduction of Cr (VI). Similarly, the presence of Cr (VI) promoted the degradation of phenol. The synergistic effect between the reduction of Cr (VI) and the degradation of phenol provided salutary method for purification of the complex waste water and environmental restoration.

Design of a versatile platform on nanostructured Ti-Mo-Zr alloy surface with photothermal, antibacterial and osteoinductive properties for biomedical application

Bianyun Cai,Mintao Xue,Delin Yuan,Xueke Zhou,Yizhou Huang,Zhijun Guo

Bacterial infection and inadequate osseointegration represent significant challenges in the application of titanium (Ti)-based bone implants. Surface modification presents a promising strategy to address these obstacles. Taking advantage of silver ions, black phosphorus nanosheets (BPNs) and polydopamine (PDA), this study developed a versatile platform on the surface of Ti-12Mo-10Zr (TMZ) alloy through a multiple surface modification process, including the anodic oxidation treatment of TMZ alloy, the preparation and addition of silver-loaded BPNs (BPNs/Ag), and the coating with PDA. Our results demonstrated that silver enhanced the stability of BPNs/Ag, which were successfully loaded to the nanostructure of oxidized TMZ surface. PDA coating conferred a pH-responsive property to the surface, prolonged the release of silver ions, and improved the photothermal performance. In acidic conditions that mimic bone defect microenvironment, the platform exhibited good photothermal performance, accelerated Ag + release, enhanced antibacterial efficacy, and increased osteoinductivity. Taken together, due to its advantageous characteristics, the versatile platform provides a valuable solution to improve the surface performance of TMZ alloys.

Enhancing the hole utilization efficiency of Ti–Fe2O3 photoelectrode by decorating CoCu-ZIF for efficient photo-assisted rechargeable zinc air batteries

Xiaoyu Wang,Dejun Wang,Yanhong Lin,Tengfeng Xie

To enhance the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance of the zinc-air battery (ZAB), reduce charging voltage, and improve energy utilization efficiency, a sunlight-assisted strategy has been implemented. The photo-assisted rechargeable ZAB was proposed, featuring Ti–Fe 2 O 3 decorated with Co 0 · 8 Cu 0.2 -ZIF as the air electrode. Upon illumination, valence band holes were generated in Ti–Fe 2 O 3 , oxidizing Co 2+ in Co 0 · .8 Cu 0.2 -ZIF to Co 3+ /Co 4+ , enhancing OER performance, reducing the charging voltage from 2 V to 1.3 V and effectively narrowing the charging-discharging voltage gap from approximately 1.15 V–0.45 V. The Ti–Fe 2 O 3 /Co 0 · 8 Cu 0.2 -ZIF structure maintains a round-trip efficiency of 65.3% after 300 cycles. This result demonstrates the successful integration of photoelectrochemical principles with ZAB technology, showcasing its efficacy in solar energy storage and light energy conversion.
