Jie Ding,Zi Qiao,Yusheng Zhang,Danrui Wei,Suping Chen,Jiajia Tang,Lu Chen,Dan Wei,Jing Sun,Hongsong Fan

Conductive and self-healing hydrogel sensor is perspective in human-machine interaction applications. However, the design of ideal self-healing hydrogels are always challenging. Herein, by introducing disulfide modified Ag nanowires (AgNWs), we show a novel self-healing hydrogel strain sensor with superior mechanics, conductivity, antibacterial property , and firstly realizing of self-healing with both recovery of mechanics and sensing properties. We demonstrate that the covalent and reversible non-covalent hydrophobic blocks in hydrophobic modified polyacrylamide (HMPAM) achieves the basic self-healing network; dextran with plentiful hydroxyl groups synergistic helps the self-healing by hydrogen bonds ; disulfide on the AgNWs surface forms a NIR-responsive and dynamic Ag-S coordination bridge between HMPAM and AgNWs. The resulted hydrogel sensor exhibits comprehensive electromechanical properties, and precisely monitors human motion and subtle electromyography (EMG) signals. Importantly, we firstly achieved the recovery of sensing properties on human motion detection and EMG signal detection after self-healing. This work provides a promising exploration to manufacture bionic strain sensors for potential applications in wearable electronics.

Facile Preparation of a Low-Cost Liquid Interlayer Material with Intelligent UV–NIR-Shielding Function for Smart Windows

Muqun Wang,Shaofeng Liang,Shuangliang Zhao,Wei Gao,Zequan Li

High-performance interlayer materials have garnered considerable interest owing to their low manufacturing costs and applicability in smart windows. In this study, a novel smart-window interlayer material capable of selective shielding against both near-infrared (NIR) and ultraviolet (UV) radiation is developed based on the light transmittance control mechanism. An excellent thermoresponsive liquid, denoted as CDs@TRL (viz., carbon quantum dots at thermal-responsive liquid), is synthesized by compositing biomass-based fluorescent carbon quantum dots (CDs) and poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (pNIPAM) at natural ambient temperature and in an aqueous phase. Due to the characteristics of CDs and synergistic effect of hydrogen bonds, CDs@TRL exhibits a high specific heat capacity (4.41 kJ kg–1 K–1), large thermal storage capacity (264.6 kJ kg–1), and better UV–NIR-blocking properties, compared to pure pNIPAM, as well as improves the sensitivity of thermal response. When injected into a window as a liquid interlayer, CDs@TRL can intelligently adjust the light transmittance according to ambient light intensity to achieve an intelligent response. The shielding rate of a 10 mm-thick CDs@TRL composite liquid against UV radiation (200–400 nm) was more than 95% in an overcast environment with insufficient light and close to 100% in a well-lighted environment. In addition, CDs@TRL is a cost-effective material that can be prepared from a wide range of raw material sources using a simple preparation process and exhibits excellent mobility and recyclability. Because of these features, it is considered to be a promising candidate for developing energy-saving and climate-adapted smart windows.

A dual-targeting and pH/NIR-stimuli-responsive nanoassembly for enhanced cuproptosis, chemo-, and phototherapy in colorectal cancer

Xiao-Qing Ling,Xin-Yan Zhao,Qi-Yan Lv,Jun-Yang Chen,Hai-Yang Dai,Hui-Fang Cui,XiaoJie Song

Cuproptosis has gained significant attention in cancer therapy. Use of copper-overloaded combination therapy that employs a variety of cell death mechanisms has emerged as a promising avenue in the treatment of cancer. However, integrating different modes in a system with optimal synergy and minimal side effects remains a challenge. In this study, a multifunctional copper ion-overloaded nanoparticle was fabricated via one-pot self-assembly for enhanced cuproptosis, chemo- and phototherapy. Molecular dynamics simulation was performed to study the self-assembly mechanism, demonstrating they assembled into stable nanoparticles (NPs) in 50 ns. The NPs possess dual-targeting capabilities towards tumor cells and mitochondria, and exhibit excellent stability in neutral PBS, while showing responsive payload release under acidic conditions or NIR laser irradiation. Upon reaching the mitochondria, the NPs release their payloads, where accumulated copper ions trigger aggregation of lipoylated proteins, etc. Released disulfiram chelates excessive copper ion to form toxic Cu(DTC) 2 , which induces apoptosis combining with hydroxycamptothecin. Meanwhile, indocyanine green-generated ROS and photothermal effects further enhance cuproptosis for synergistic therapy. In vitro results revealed potent cytotoxicity of the NPs against CT26 cells while negligible effects on normal cells. Furthermore, significant reactive oxygen species generation, mitochondrial membrane potential alteration, increased apoptosis, and modulated protein mRNA expression levels, confirmed the synergistic combination of chemotherapy, cuproptosis, and photothermal/photodynamic therapies. Notably, in vivo experiments demonstrated selective tumor accumulation and outstanding antitumor efficacy (89.5% inhibition rate) with excellent biosafety profile. The NPs provide a novel strategy for cuproptosis-based combination cancer therapy and shows significant clinical translation potential.

Boosting NIR-II/III Luminescence via Fe3+-Ni2+ Energy Channels and Crystal Field Modulation in Monoclinic Double Perovskites

Xiaomeng Wang,Jiaren Du,Hengwei Lin

Blue-light-excitable near-infrared (NIR) emitting materials exhibit significant potential for compact light sources in bioimaging, nondestructive detection, and night vision. However, achieving efficient NIR-II/III (1000–1800 nm) emission under blue excitation remains challenging due to the large excitation–emission Stokes shift and the forbidden nature of f – f or d – d transitions. In this study, we report on the Ni 2 + -doped monoclinic double perovskite Ca 2 ScTaO 6 , which exhibits broadband NIR-II/III with a full width at half maximum of 240 nm and a photoluminescence quantum yield of approximately 21% when excited at 425 nm. The incorporation of Fe 3+ ions significantly improves the photoluminescence quantum yield to approximately 37% through energy transfer pathways from Fe 3+ to Ni 2+ and crystal field modulation. Structural and spectroscopic investigations reveal the presence of Fe 3+ ions at various lattice sites, resulting in localized distortions that facilitate the relaxation of d – d transitions in Ni 2+ . A prototype NIR light-emitting diode utilizing Ca 2 ScTaO 6 :Fe 3+ , Ni 2+ exhibits strong NIR-II/III emission, facilitating the visualization of subsurface damage in various materials, including fruits, capsules, meat, and silicon wafers. This work demonstrates an effective strategy for designing blue-light-excitable NIR materials through synergistic energy transfer and crystal field engineering.

Thermally controlled Er3+-Ho3+ energy transfer in NaYGeO4 olivine phosphor for enhanced NIR-II luminescence and sensitive thermometry

Hui Zeng,Xiaolang Fan,Yangbo Wang,Huaiyong Li

Lanthanide NIR-II luminescence free from thermal quenching is attractive for various applications at elevated temperatures. Here, we present a thermal enhancement of Er 3+ NIR-II luminescence based on the synergy of phonon assisted Er 3+ -Er 3+ cross relaxations and controllable Er 3+ -Ho 3+ energy transfer. The lattice expansion of NaYGeO 4 olivine phosphor upon heating (298–823 K) suppresses the Er 3+ -Ho 3+ energy transfer and leads up to 46.1 times enhancement of Er 3+ NIR-II luminescence under 379 nm excitation. The NIR-II luminescence evolution as increasing temperature allows dual-mode ratiometric thermometry, i.e., luminescence intensity ratios (LIRs) based on Er 3+ 4 I 13/2 Stark sublevels and on Er 3+ 4 I 13/2 and Ho 3+ 5 I 6 levels. Obtained relative sensitivities above 0.46% K ‒1 over a broad temperature range of 298–673 K with a maximum of 2.32% K -1 suggest NaYGeO 4 :Er 3+ /Ho 3+ phosphor as a promising NIR-II luminescence thermometer. Moreover, this research offers an available perspective for designing thermal-enhanced NIR luminescence in ordinary thermal expansion materials.

Multi-responsive upconversion/organic porous silicon nanocomposite for controlled drug release via NIR irradiation and tumor microenvironment stimuli

Xiaotao Wang,Zhihao Bi,Yonggui Liao,Chak-Yin Tang,Xuefeng Li,Wing-Cheung Law

We report the synthesis of an organic/inorganic architecture, a rare-earth upconversion nanoparticle (UCNP)-based core with organic porous silicon shell nanocapsules, that enables visible and ultraviolet light emission under 980 nm near-infrared (NIR) irradiation for photodegradation. A mesoporous organosilica shell containing disulfide bonds was uniformly coated onto UCNP cores via a combined sol–gel and hard-template strategy. Glutathione (GSH) – triggered degradation of the nanocarriers was quantified using the molybdenum blue method. A photoresponsive azobenzene derivative, activatable by both UV and visible light, was synthesized and grafted onto the nanocarrier surface. Doxorubicin (DOX) was loaded into the nanocapsules, achieving a drug-loading capacity of 12.2 wt%. At neutral pH, minimal DOX leakage occurred; maximal release was observed under a composite stimulus environment. The Baker-Lonsdale model was employed to calculate diffusion coefficients under varying release conditions, providing quantitative guidance for designing multi-responsive drug-release systems. In vitro cellular assays showed that synergistic stimuli—NIR irradiation combined with an acidic, GSH-rich microenvironment—trigger controllable DOX release, enabling efficient tumor cell ablation. This work demonstrates a versatile, multi-responsive delivery platform combining UCNP-based photoreactivity, GSH-triggered degradation, and photoactive surface gating to achieve targeted, low-toxicity, on-demand chemotherapy.

Fluorinated Hypoxia-Responsive Aza-BODIPY for NIR-II FL/19F MR/PA Imaging and Phototherapy of Lung Cancer

Anfeng Li,Fang Wang,Mou Jiang,Yu Li,Xin Zhou,Zhong-Xing Jiang

Tumor hypoxia limits the efficacy of photodynamic therapy (PDT), necessitating photosensitizers with hypoxia-adaptive therapy and imaging. Here, we present a fluorinated N -oxide aza-BODIPY ( OFBD ) nanoemulsion ( OFBD-NP ) for hypoxia-responsive, multimodal imaging-guided phototherapy. OFBD generates robust singlet oxygen under normoxia for PDT, but is reduced by CYP450 enzymes in hypoxic cells to photothermal-potent FBD , enabling switchable PDT/PTT. Co-assembly with fluorinated oil enhances oxygen delivery, boosts 19 F MRI sensitivity, and promotes J -aggregation, shifting fluorescence into the NIR-II window for deep-tissue imaging. The redox conversion also activates photoacoustic signals, enabling responsive tri-modal imaging (NIR-II FLI/ 19 F MRI/PAI). OFBD-NP shows potent cytotoxicity in vitro under both normoxic and hypoxic conditions via apoptosis. In vivo, it selectively accumulates in tumors, offers high-contrast imaging, and leads to complete tumor regression in subcutaneous A549 models after laser irradiation, without systemic toxicity. This work demonstrates a smart nanoplatform that integrates deep-tissue imaging and hypoxia-triggered therapeutic switching, addressing major limitations of conventional photosensitizers in cancer imaging and phototherapy.

NIR/TME-responsive release of zoledronic acid-loaded LDHs on ZE21C magnesium alloy with multi-therapy for osteosarcoma

Dong Li,Tong Zhang,Shaosheng Jia,Jianan Yu,Rongbang Sun,Bin Yin,Liguo Wang,Lingchuang Bai,Lan Chen,Shaokang Guan

Osteosarcoma (OS) poses a severe threat to human health, and the standard clinical treatment involves prosthetic replacement after surgical removal combined with radiotherapy and chemotherapy. However, the recurrence of residual tumors and extensive bone defects leads to a poor prognosis for patients. Zoledronic acid (ZA) is clinically used for tumor treatment and osteoclast inhibition. Nevertheless, intravenous infusion of ZA has poor targeting and significant toxicity to normal tissues. Biodegradable Mg alloys have excellent mechanical and biological compatibility, making them ideal for orthopedic implants. However, their application is limited due to poor corrosion resistance. This work applied a multi-composite layered double hydroxide (LDH)-ZA/PDA coating to the surface of ZE21C alloy. The composite coating adsorbed ZA in weakly alkaline or neutral conditions and released ZA under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation in the tumor microenvironment (TME). The stimuli-responsive release of ZA was confirmed to be related to the NIR-TME-triggered change in LDH interlayer spacing. In vitro and in vivo experiments showed that this multi-composite coating improved corrosion resistance, responded to TME and NIR stimuli to release ZA and reactive oxygen species, effectively targeting and killing tumor cells and osteoclasts through the AKT/GSK-3β signaling pathway. It also transformed OS from “cold tumors” into “hot tumors”, reactivated macrophage-mediated tumor immunity, and promoted osteogenesis. The chemo-thermal-therapeutic approach of the composite coating achieves a “three-birds-with-one-stone” effect. This study offers new insights into applying Mg alloys in prosthetic replacements after OS surgery.

Rapidly responsive and highly selective NIR fluorescent probe for detecting hydrogen sulfide in food samples and living cells

Xuejing Xu,Yuling Zeng,Haichang Ding,Qianling Liu,Liangtao Mao,Gang Liu,Shouzhi Pu

Hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) is a pungent gas that is one of the key mediators of signal transduction in biological systems, and its presence is related to the freshness of some protein foods. Using phenothiazine derivatives as fluorophores and 2, 4-dinitrobenzene sulfonate (DNBS) fragments as reaction groups, a near-infrared (NIR) probe WX-HS for H 2 S identification was designed. With the addition of H 2 S, WX-HS appeared a strong fluorescence signal at 660 nm with short reaction time (90 s) and high sensitivity, and fluorescence state change from non-fluorescent to orange-red. In addition, WX-HS could effectively detect H 2 S produced during food oxidation. Based on its low cytotoxicity, the WX-HS probe further enabled the detection and imaging of H 2 S in A549 cells.

Cr3+-Yb3+ energy transfer drives ultra-wideband thermally-stable NIR-emitting Sr3Sc2Ge3O12 garnet phosphors for pc-LED application

Li Li,Haoliang Yang,Yongjie Wang,Xianju Zhou,Faling Ling,Huajing Gao,Zhiyu Yang,Xiantong Tang,Yongbin Hua

The development of medical, military, and other fields has greatly increased the demand for broadband near-infrared light sources . This article reports that Sr 3 Sc 2 Ge 3 O 12 : Cr 3+ (SSGO: Cr 3+ ), a broadband near-infrared phosphor with 850 nm as the luminescence center, has an emission spectrum covering 700–1200 nm and a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 125 nm under 490 nm excitation. To further increase the FWHM value, Yb 3+ is introduced into the phosphor of SSGO: Cr 3+ to enable energy transfer from Cr 3+ to Yb 3+ . After doping 1 % of Yb 3+ onto the Sr 2+ site, the near-infrared emission generated by the 4 A 2 → 4 T 1 (4P) transition of Cr 3+ and the near-infrared emission generated by the 2 F 5/2  →  2 F 7/2 transition of Yb 3+ work so that the FWHM increases to 220 nm. In addition, the thermal stability of the phosphor after co-doping with Yb 3+ is also greatly enhanced from 61.6 % to 75.1 % by comparing it to the Cr 3+ single-doped sample. In addition, SSGO:0.08Cr 3+ , 0.01 Yb 3+ was combined with a commercial 490 nm chip to prepare a broadband near-infrared light-emitting diode (pc-LED).

Enhanced near-infrared II and III emission in Ga2O3: Ni2+ phosphor via charge compensation for NIR spectroscopy application

Yi Zhang,Zhexuan Gao,Yinyan Li,Huanping Wang,Shilong Zhao,Yang Shen,Degang Deng,Shiqing Xu

A novel near-infrared emitting Ga 2 O 3 : Ni 2+ phosphor was prepared, and its emission characteristics were improved through melting aid and charge balance. Under 410 nm excitation, the Ga 2 O 3 : Ni 2+ phosphor exhibits broadband near-infrared emission in the second region, with a peak at 1455 nm and a half maximum width of up to 300 nm. At the same time, the crystallinity of the sample was improved and the charge imbalance during substitution between Ga 3+ and Ni 2+ was eliminated through melting assistance and charge compensation. The results show that the emission intensity of Ga 1.97 O 3 : 0.015Ni 2+ , 0.015Ge 4+ phosphor (with added flux H 3 BO 3 ) is 10 times higher than that of Ga 1.985 O 3 : 0.015Ni 2+ sample. Its quantum yield is as high as 31.2 %, significantly higher than the reported Ni 2+ ion doped phosphors. According to the distinct absorptions of C–H, O–H as well as N–H bonds in the shortwave near-infrared range, samples of ethanol, n-hexanol, water and ammonia demonstrated different absorption peaks under the penetration of the constructed phosphor conversion light-emitting diode, which proved the potential application of Ga 2 O 3 : Ni 2+ , Ge 4+ -H 3 BO 3 phosphor in composition analysis and detection.

Tunable and efficient broadband short-wave infrared emission of Ni2+-activated spinel phosphors for advanced NIR light sources

Yongjie Wang,Dongshuo Li,Yingju Yan,Li Li,Guotao Xiang,Sha Jiang,Ruiheng Pan,Xiantong Tang,Chuan Jing,Xianju Zhou,Yaroslav Zhydachevskyy,Andrzej Suchocki

Broadband shortwave infrared (SWIR) light-emitting diodes (LEDs) have attracted significant attention due to their widespread applications in spectroscopy, food industry, agriculture, optical communications, night vision, and biomedical technologies. Nevertheless, their performance remains limited by the critical phosphor layer's low quantum efficiency and narrow emission bandwidth. This work presents a series of Ni 2+ -doped spinel phosphors emitting in the SWIR range with high efficiency and tunable broadband emission. Upon UV illumination, normal spinel MgAl 2 O 4 :Ni 2+ phosphors exhibit an emission range of 1100–1600 nm and an internal quantum efficiency (IQE) of 5.2 %. By contrast, the inverse spinel MgGa 2 O 4 :0.02Ni 2+ demonstrates a significantly improved IQE of 77.2 % and excellent thermal stability (62.9 %@423 K), achieved by cation substitution. Furthermore, the significant spectral tuning over a broad range of 405 nm is realized through In 3+ cation- and F − anion-substitution in MgGa 2 O 4 :0.02Ni 2+ . Finally, SWIR pc-LEDs incorporating MgGa 2 O 4 :Ni 2+ phosphors were fabricated, and its potential applications in night vision, high-penetrating imaging, and non-destructive detection were evaluated. This work offers a promising pathway for developing tunable near-infrared light sources, thereby expanding their applicability across a range of advanced technologies.
