Graphene–CdS (G–CdS) nanocomposite was prepared successfully via a two-step solvothermal process, with CdS uniformly dispersed on the graphene nanosheets. The photocatalytic disinfection activity of G–CdS was evaluated, and the result shows that G–CdS exhibited higher inactivation efficiency toward the gram-negative bacterium, Escherichia coli , than pure CdS nanoparticles under visible light irradiation. Exposure to 10 mg of pure CdS resulted in a 1.1-log inactivation after 60 min, but resulted in 5.3-log reduction of viable bacteria when exposure to 10 mg G–CdS under the same illumination conditions. In addition, the impacts of humic acid (HA), a kind of natural organic matter (NOM), on its bactericidal properties have also been determined. G–CdS in the presence of HA (10 mg/L) significantly decreased its toxicity, causing less than 0.4-log inactivation after 60 min. Lipid peroxidation, intercellular ROS generation and antioxidant enzyme activities assays indicate that excess oxidative stress induced by G–CdS suppressed the antioxidant defense system, subsequently affected the normal function of lipid, protein and nucleic acid, and thus resulted in cell death. However, the decreased toxicity of G–CdS in the presence of HA may be attributed to that (1) HA presents a barrier to prevent the physical contact between bacteria cells and G–CdS, which was the first step of toxicity mechanisms; (2) HA acts as an antioxidant to react with any ROS and reduce the toxicity.

Two kinds of hierarchical SnO 2 particles as nano-flower-like SnO 2 particles (NF-SnO 2 ) and mesoporous-sphere-like SnO 2 particles (MS-SnO 2 ) have been synthesized and used in CdS quantum dots (QDs) sensitized solar cells (QDSSC). TEM images show that NF-SnO 2 particles compose well interconnected nanoplates and MS-SnO 2 spheres are consisted with large numbers of SnO 2 nanoparticles with size about 7 nm. Owing to the larger Brunauer–Emmett–Teller surface area of NF-SnO 2 particles, NF-SnO 2 photoelectrode can load higher amounts of CdS QDs and shows enhanced light absorbance, resulting in higher short-circuit current density compared with that of MS-SnO 2 photoelectrode. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy analysis results show that the QDSSC with NF-SnO 2 photoelectrode has a higher charge recombination resistance and a longer electron lifetime, so its photovoltaic performance is better than that of the QDSSC with MS-SnO 2 photoelectrode. The QDSSC with NF-SnO 2 photoelectrode can attain 3 % power conversion efficiency, which is higher than that of the cell with MS-SnO 2 photoelectrode (1.97 %).

Herein the influence of ultrasmall Ag nanoclusters (Ag NCs) against CdS quantum dots (QDs) in a photoelectrochemical (PEC) nanosystem was exploited for the first time, based on which a novel PEC bioanalysis was successfully developed via the efficient quenching effect of Ag NCs against the CdS QDs. In a model system, DNA assay was achieved by using molecular beacon (MB) probes anchored on a CdS QDs modified electrode , and the MB probes contain two segments that can hybridize with both target DNA sequence and the label of DNA encapsulated Ag NCs. After the MB probe was unfolded by the target DNA sequence, the labels of oligonucleotide encapsulated Ag NCs would be brought in close proximity to the CdS QDs electrode surface , and efficient photocurrent quenching of QDs could be resulted from an energy transfer process that originated from NCs. Thus, by monitoring the attenuation in the photocurrent signal, an elegant and sensitive PEC DNA bioanalysis could be accomplished. The developed biosensor displayed a linear range from 1.0 pM to 10 nM and the detection limit was experimentally found to be of 0.3 pM. This work presents a feasible signaling principle that could act as a common basis for general PEC bioanalysis development.

Based on translucent TiO 2 nanotube (NT) film, CdS quantum dots (QDs) were anchored onto TiO 2 NT film using different linker molecules including thioglycolic acid (TGA), mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) and cysteine via hydrothermal method. The CdS QDs sensitized TiO 2 NT (CdS/TiO 2 NT) electrodes were constructed to quantum dots-sensitized solar cells (QDSSCs). The photovoltaic performance analysis results of the QDSSCs show that the linker molecule plays a significant role in the solar cell performance. The QDSSC using cysteine as linker molecule exhibits best power conversion efficiency than the other QDSSCs using TGA or MPA as linker molecules. The incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE) and the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analysis results indicate that amino group of cysteine may has two aspects of the role to improve the power conversion efficiency of the QDSSC, one is that the good charge transfer properties of the cysteine might depend on the good donor–acceptor abilities of the free electron pair of the amino group, another is that distance between the TiO 2 NT and the CdS QDs could be slightly decreased due to the cysteine could anchor the CdS QDs via both amino and thiol group.

The hybrid structures of polystyrene- b -poly(ethylene oxide) (PS- b -PEO) block copolymer and inorganic nanoparticles with good stability and biocompatibility have potential applications in drug delivery and bioimaging. Spherical co-assemblies of PS 120 - b -PEO 318 and oleylamine-capped CdS quantum dots (QDs) are produced successfully in this work by adding water to a mixed common solvent, such as N , N -dimethylmethanamide (DMF)/chloroform, DMF/tetrahydrofuran (THF), or DMF/toluene. The energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectrum indicates that QDs are located at the interface between the core and shell of the spherical co-assemblies. The co-assembly process during water addition is traced by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and turbidity measurement. Spherical co-assemblies are formed through budding from bilayers of the block copolymer and QDs. The morphology of the co-assemblies is related to the miscibility of the QD-dispersing solvents with water and the morphology changes from a spherical to a vesicle-like structure with DMF/toluene. Increasing THF content in the mixed solvent causes morphological transitions from spherical co-assemblies to multi-branched cylinders and micelles where QDs are located in the central core. Increasing chloroform content yields vesicle-like structures with protruding rods on the surface. The mechanism of the morphological transitions is also discussed in detail.

Semiconductor photocatalytic organic reactions have garnered extensive interest owing to their environmentally friendly and sustainable advantages. Herein, the preparation of Ag 2 S@CdS p-n heterojunction through in-situ ion exchange reaction for photocatalytic benzylamine coupling is reported. Compared with pure CdS, Ag 2 S@CdS exhibited significantly enhanced photocatalytic activity for the oxidative coupling reaction of benzylamine. In particular, Ag 2 S@CdS showed high photocatalytic benzylamine conversion (>99 %) after 90 min under sunlight irradiation. The photocatalytic performance test at different wavelengths shows that the broadening of the light absorption range of Ag 2 S@CdS effectively improves the utilization of visible light. The photoelectric performance test demonstrates that the internal electric field of the p-n heterojunction effectively enhances the efficiency of separating photogenerated carriers. Moreover, Ag 2 S@CdS exhibited excellent compatibility with various benzylamine derivatives. The mechanism of photocatalytic benzylamine oxidation by Ag 2 S@CdS was investigated. This work provides some insights into the design of visible-light photocatalysts for selective organic synthesis.

Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting offers an ideal strategy for the development of clean and renewable energy. However, its practical implementation is often inhibited by the high recombination rate of photogenerated charge carriers and the instability of photoanodes. Introducing defect engineering (such as oxygen vacancies) and constructing internal electric field-modulated Z-scheme heteronanostructures (HNs) can be considered as effective approaches to overcome these obstacles. Herein, a flexible method is developed for synthesizing Z-scheme BiOI-CdS HNs with oxygen vacancies, which induce an internal electric field between ultrathin BiOI nanosheets and a CdS semiconductor. This Z-scheme mechanism significantly promotes the separation of photogenerated electron–hole pairs, thereby enhancing the PEC performance. The BiOI-CdS photoanode achieves a photocurrent density of 4.22 mA cm–2 at 1.6 V vs RHE under AM 1.5G illumination (100 mW cm–2), outperforming bare BiOI and CdS. Moreover, the photoanode exhibits exceptional stability with only a slight decrease of approximately in its initial photocurrent after a rigorous 4 h test, surpassing other counterparts in terms of durability. This work affords a better understanding of oxygen vacancies and the construction of highly efficient and stable Z-scheme photoanodes for feasible PEC application.

Solar-driven photocatalytic CO 2 reduction coupled with the oxidation of organic compounds to value-added chemicals is a promising strategy, which can utilize both photogenerated electrons and holes. Here, a gradient alloyed CdS@Zn x Cd 1-x S@ZnS quantum dots (quasi-Type II band structure) capped with Cl − ligands demonstrate great potential in the simultaneous conversion of CO 2 and 1-phenylethanol into syngas and pinacol. The passivation with Cl − maximizes the exposure of surface-active sites and improves their electronic structure, providing a prerequisite for the efficient execution of redox reactions. More importantly, the p–π conjugation between chloride-ion ligands and the benzene ring provides a bridge for the ultrafast transfer of holes, which greatly promotes the activation of the Cα─H bond in 1-phenylethanol to release a mass of reactive free hydrogen. This process effectively lowers the thermodynamic energy barrier for CO 2 reduction, even as the excessively high kinetic energy barriers arising from the accumulation of excess protons also enable them to self-couple, leading to the generation of syngas (CO ≈ 75 mmol g −1 h −1 ; selectivity ≈ 69.86%). This work provides insights for future artificial photosynthesis to achieve high activity and cost-effective conversion of CO 2 into storable renewable resources and the co-production of value-added substances through synergistic organic oxidation.

Owing to the improved charge separation and maximized redox capability of the system, Step-scheme (S-scheme) heterojunctions have garnered significant research attention for efficient photocatalysis of H 2 evolution. In this work, an innovative linear donor–acceptor (D–A) conjugated polymer fluorene-alt-(benzo-thiophene-dione) (PFBTD) is coupled with the CdS nanosheets, forming the organic–inorganic S-scheme heterojunction. The CdS/PFBTD (CP) composite exhibits an impressed hydrogen production rate of 7.62 mmol g −1 h −1 without any co-catalysts, which is ≈14 times higher than pristine CdS. It is revealed that the outstanding photocatalytic performance is attributed to the formation of rapid electron transfer channels through the interfacial Cd─O bonding as evidenced by the density functional theory (DFT) calculations and in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. The charge transfer mechanism involved in S-scheme heterojunctions is further investigated through the photo-irradiated Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) analysis. This work provides a new point of view on the mechanism of interfacial charge transfer and points out the direction of designing superior organic–inorganic S-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts.

New ternary composites based on three dimensionally ordered macroporous (3DOM) SrTiO 3 (CdS/Au/3DOM-SrTiO 3 ) were prepared and used as photocatalysts in visible light (λ > 420 nm) photocatalytic water splitting for hydrogen evolution. Through optimizing the pore size of 3DOM-SrTiO 3 materials and the loading amounts of Au and CdS , CdS/Au/3DOM-SrTiO 3 (300), templated by 300 nm sized poly(methyl methacrylate) colloids, was found to exhibit a remarkably enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate (2.74 mmol/h⋅g), which was 3.2 times as high as that of CdS/Au/C-SrTiO 3 catalyst based on commercial SrTiO 3 . This notably enhanced photocatalytic performance was mainly attributed to the slow photon enhancement effect of 3DOM-SrTiO 3 (300) material, which significantly promoted the light harvesting efficiency of ternary composite for the slow photon region of 3DOM-SrTiO 3 (300) was well matched with the optical absorption band of photocatalyst. Further depositing Pt nanoparticles on CdS/Au/3DOM-SrTiO 3 (300) composite as a co-catalyst, an extraordinarily high hydrogen evolution rate (up to 5.46 mmol/g⋅h) and apparent quantum efficiency (42.2% at 420 nm) were achieved because of the synergistic effect of efficient carrier separation, Au SPR effect, and slow photon effect. Furthermore, these ternary CdS/Au/3DOM-SrTiO 3 composite photocatalysts were very stable and could be easily recycled four times in visible light photocatalytic water splitting experiments without any loss in activity.

In the face of energy scarcity and environmental degradation, photocatalysis emerges as a green and highly efficient method to convert solar energy into a renewable energy source . In this study, CdS nanoparticles were successfully grown in situ along the edges of ZnIn 2 S 4 nanosheets using ultrasound during the synthesis process and the second phase precipitation of In(OH) 3 appeared in the process of preparation. Optimal Cd and S ratios resulted in ZnIn 2 S 4 @In(OH) 3 @CdS heterojunction exhibiting remarkable photocatalytic H 2 production performance compared to standalone ZnIn 2 S 4 and CdS. The internal heterojunction interface within the composite naturally generates an electric field, enhancing carrier separation and facilitating their transport. Additionally, the inclusion of In(OH) 3 further expedites carrier extraction. Ultimately, the mechanism behind the photocatalytic H 2 production was elucidated using the Z-scheme mechanism. This work introduced a novel approach to fabricating multifunctional photocatalysts , presenting a fresh perspective in their design and preparation.

In this paper, a novel host–guest assembly strategy is developed to incorporate TiO 2 nanoparticles and CdS quantum dots (CdS QDs) into the photoactive dendritic porphyrins mesoporous silica nanospheres (DPMSN) channels for establishing heterojunctions nanoreactors (designated as DPMSTNC). The well-defined dendritic architecture facilitates the high dispersion of TiO 2 /CdS heterojunctions within the DPMSN matrix, effectively maximizing the interfacial contact area between the heterojunction components and the cobalt porphyrin framework. Crucially, the synergistic interplay of cobalt porphyrins incorporated in the silica framework and the ultra-small TiO 2 /CdS heterojunction in the dendritic channels promotes efficient charge transfer and separation in the nanoreactor. The optimized DPMSTNC nanoreactor exhibits excellent catalytic performance with a conversion of 96.0 % and a selectivity of 92.0 % in styrene oxidation, which significantly surpasses that of single-component catalysts and simple composite heterostructure catalysts. This nanoreactor design strategy, which combines spatially confined heterojunctions with photoactive porous frameworks, provides a novel and versatile platform for developing high-efficiency photocatalytic systems through precise nanoarchitectural control.
