Mixed matrix membranes constructed from electrospun nanofiber backbones with orientationally aligned MOFs for superior mechanical and H2/CO2 separation properties

Hang Xu,Ningxiang Lan,Yan Hu,Yuchun Xi,Jinzhi Hu,Chaowei Wen,Wanpeng Li,Chuanqiang Yin,Xiaomin Li,Lang Zhou

In this study, a novel polyimide (PI)/metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)/polyetherimide (PEI) composite membrane was fabricated for gas separation applications. The directional alignment of MOFs on PI electrospun nanofibers was achieved by an in-situ growth method, resulting in the construction of continuous, fast, and low-resistance gas transport channels in the composite membrane (PEI/PI@ZIF-67). This PI nanofiber backbone with a three-dimensional network structure not only remarkably enhanced the interfacial compatibility between the polymer and the MOFs, but also significantly improved the mechanical strength of the membrane, resulting in a tensile strength of the composite membrane of 100 MPa. Moreover, the introduction of PI fibers promoted the oriented alignment of the MOFs and enhanced the H 2 separation performance. The H 2 permeability of PEI/PI@ZIF-67-3 was 9.5 Barrer, which was 439% higher than that of the pure PEI membrane. The H 2 /CO 2 selectivity was 9.3, which was 3.3 times higher than that of the pure PEI membrane. This can be attributed to the porous structure of ZIF-67 and the complex and tortuous gas transport path provided by the PI fibers, allowing the optimized composite design of PEI/PI@ZIF-67 to simultaneously improve gas permeability and selectivity. Furthermore, the prepared fiber composite membranes exhibited good hydrophobicity and thermal stability. Consequently, PEI/PI@ZIF-67, with its continuous and fast transport path, shows great potential for CO 2 capture and H 2 recovery applications.

Synergistic effect of type-II heterojunction and cocatalyst loading on BiVO4-based photoanode for enhanced photoelectrochemical water splitting H2 evolution

Tie Zhou,Zehang Zhao,Xue Deng,Jing Xie,Bing Lv,Yangfang Liao,Wenzhong Wang

The combination of band structure and cocatalyst loading can greatly improve photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting H 2 generation of the semiconductor photoanodes. This work reports the design and construction of a novel ternary BiVO 4 /FeVO 4 /FeOOH nanoporous film (NPF) photoanode based on BiVO 4 NPF modified with FeVO 4 nanoparticles (NPs) and FeOOH nanoneedles (NNs). As revealed by UV–vis absorption spectra, the BiVO 4 /FeVO 4 /FeOOH NPF photoanode displays good light-harvesting efficiency in the range of 300–800 nm. Electrochemical measurements and photoluminescence spectroscopy further demonstrate that the modification of FeVO 4 NPs and FeOOH NNs significantly enhances both the bulk charge separation efficiency and surface charge injection efficiency of the BiVO 4 NPF photoanode due to the Type-II band alignment established at the interface between BiVO 4 and FeVO 4 as well as cocatalyst action of FeOOH. The BiVO 4 /FeVO 4 /FeOOH NPF exhibits significantly enhanced PEC water splitting performance and achieves a H 2 evolution rate of 40.3 μmol cm −2  h −1 , which is 2.25 times and 13 times higher than that of BiVO 4 /FeVO 4 and pure BiVO 4 NPF photoanodes, respectively. This work presents a viable strategy for efficient PEC water splitting by synergistically optimizing band structure and cocatalysts.

Multifunctional Pt-CeO2-CNT composite membranes for high-performance PEM water electrolysis with reduced H2 permeation and enhanced chemical durability

Runcheng Zhang,Zhuolin Yuan,Xutao Qiu,Zhiyan Rui,Xiaoyun Shi,Jia Li,Aidong Tan,Jianguo Liu

Proton exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolysis efficiency can be significantly enhanced by reducing the membrane thickness; however, this approach leads to excessive H2 permeation into O2 (HiO), causing serious safety hazards and accelerated degradation. This study presents a novel thin (about 60 μm) composite membrane incorporating Pt and CeO2 nanoparticles supported on carbon nanotubes (Pt-CeO2-CNT/Nafion) to address these challenges. The catalysts embedded in the membrane exhibit synergistic multifunctional effects at the microscopic level. CeO2 transfers electrons to Pt through metal–support interactions, enhancing the H2–O2 recombination activity. Oxygen vacancies in CeO2 effectively scavenge free radicals (H˙, HO2˙, HO˙, etc.). CNTs serve as stable anchoring sites, preventing Ceδ+ migration and membrane poisoning. At the macroscopic level, Pt-CeO2-CNT/Nafion maintains superior electrochemical performance with an electrolysis voltage of 1.746 V at 3.0 A cm−2. Meanwhile, the HiO concentration remains below 0.7% across all tested current densities, and the F− release rate decreases by 3.8-fold compared to Pt-CNT/Nafion during long-term operation, indicating improved safety and durability. This work provides both fundamental insights and practical strategies for developing next-generation thin PEMs suitable for industrial applications.

3D coral-like Ni–Mo–S/NF bifunctional electrocatalyst for concurrent glycerol valorization to formate and energy-efficient H2 evolution

Yong Liu,Bohon Chen,Hanbin Nie,Shuanglin Gui,Jianping Deng

Electrolytic hydrogen production from water is a cost-effective renewable energy technology, but its development is severely constrained by high energy consumption, precious metal catalysts, and low-value products of anode. Given that inexpensive glycerol exhibits a significantly lower redox potential than water, this study developed a 3D coral-like nickel–molybdenum sulfur bifunctional nanocatalyst (Ni–Mo–S/NF) based on nickel foam, which served as both the anode and cathode in an alkaline glycerol electrolyte, enabling the simultaneous production of high-value formate at the anode and high-purity hydrogen at the cathode. Notably, in a two-electrode system, the alkaline glycerol electrolyzer required only 1.37 V to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm−2, which was 280 mV lower than that of an alkaline aqueous solution system, indicating an about 17% reduction in energy consumption compared to conventional water electrolysis. Meanwhile, this system reached a faradaic efficiency of 95.0% for formate production and 99.6% for hydrogen evolution. Benefiting from the outstanding performance of the noble-metal-free Ni–Mo–S/NF catalyst, the proposed technology for simultaneous formate and hydrogen production via glycerol electrooxidation offers a novel pathway for the green production of high-value chemicals and energy-saving hydrogen generation.

Synthesis of methanol over highly dispersed Cu–Fe based catalysts derived from layered double hydroxides

Jing Tian,Weixin Qian,Haitao Zhang,Hongfang Ma,Weiyong Ying

In this paper, catalysts with different aluminum contents were prepared by a co-precipitation method using LDHs (layered double hydroxides) as the precursors through the adjustment of Cu2+ : Fe2+, and the catalysts were named LDO catalysts. The effect of aluminum on CO2 hydrogenation to methanol was investigated by evaluating the characterization. With the addition of Al, Ar physisorption results showed an increase in BET-specific surface area, TEM demonstrated a decrease in catalyst particle diameter, XRD showed that Cu and Fe existed in the catalyst mainly in the form of CuFe2O4 and CuO, XPS demonstrated a decrease in electron cloud density and an increase in base sites and oxygen vacancies, and CO2-TPD and H2-TPD results indicated that Al promoted the dissociation and adsorption of CO2 and H2. When the reaction temperature was 230 °C, the pressure was 4 MPa, H2/CO2 = 2.5 and the space velocity was 2000 ml (h gcat)−1, the best conversion (14.87%) and the highest methanol selectivity (39.53%) of the catalyst were obtained at 30% aluminum content.

The enhanced performance of a CeSiOx support on a Mn/CeSiOx catalyst for selective catalytic reduction of NOx with NH3

Wei Li,Rui-tang Guo,Shu-xian Wang,Wei-guo Pan,Qi-lin Chen,Ming-yuan Li,Peng Sun,Shu-ming Liu

A series of Mn/CeSiOx catalysts were prepared by the wet impregnation method and used for selective catalytic reduction of NO with NH3. As can be seen from the experimental results, the Mn/CeSiOx catalyst with a Ce/Si molar ratio of 2/1 showed excellent low-temperature SCR activity, high N2 selectivity and excellent SO2 and H2O tolerance. The relationship between the CeSiOx support and the SCR performance of Mn/CeSiOx (2 : 1) catalyst was investigated based on the characterization results of N2 adsorption, XRD, XPS, H2-TPR, NH3-TPD and in situ DRIFT. The strong interaction between Ce and Si resulted in the good dispersion of Mn species on the support; correspondingly, the redox ability and NH3 adsorption capacity were greatly enhanced. The results of in situ DRIFT study revealed that the NH3-SCR reactions over Mn/CeO2 and Mn/CeSiOx (2 : 1) mainly obeyed both the E–R mechanism and the L–H mechanism. Furthermore, the formation of more Mn4+ and chemisorbed oxygen greatly facilitates the oxidation of NO to NO2, as a result, promoting the low-temperature SCR performance of Mn/CeSiOx (2 : 1).

Edge functionalization of terminal amino group in carbon nitride by in-situ C–N coupling for photoreforming of biomass into H2

Qiong Liu,Liling Wei,Qiaoyue Xi,Yongqian Lei,Fuxian Wang

Solar-driven water splitting is a promising approach for H 2 generation, but in order to accelerate the reaction rate, high-cost sacrificial agents are usually required. Photoreforming of biomass serves as an alternative strategy for sustainable H 2 generation. Carbon nitride has recently emerged as a promising photocatalyst for the photorefoming reaction, however its performance is largely hindered by its poor visible light absorption. Here, we report, for the first time, the fabrication of an edge functionalized carbon nitride with remarkable visible light absorption via an in-situ C–N coupling method. By using N-acetylethanolamine (NA) as an additive to react with the precursors including urea, dicyandiamide, and melamine, the ethyl alcohol groups are grafted to the heptazine rings by replacing the terminal amino groups. Experimental results and DFT calculations reveal that the introduction of ethyl alcohol group leads to the generation of a new discrete energy level in the bandgap, resulting in significant increase in visible light absorption. The ethyl alcohol group herein serves as an electron donor, which would modulate the electron distribution to form an internal electric field to improve the charge separation. Moreover, the presence of ethyl alcohol group could favor the absorption of the biomass entity. The tuned CN shows superior photoreforming performance compared to the pristine CN in the presence of proton reduction Pt cocatalysts. It allows for visible-light-driven conversion of several monosaccharides into H 2 without the need for sacrificial agents.

Efficient photoreforming of lignocellulose into H2 and photocatalytic CO2 reduction via in-plane surface dyadic heterostructure of porous polymeric carbon nitride

Qiong Liu,Fuxian Wang,Yu Jiang,Wei Chen,Ren Zou,Jiliang Ma,Linxin Zhong,Xinwen Peng

Photoreforming of lignocellulose for sustainable H 2 generation appears to be a good option at the time that biomass wastes are being degraded. Recently, polymeric carbon nitride (PCN) has emerged as a promising alternative for the photorefoming reaction, however, its photocatalytic performance is largely limited by its severe recombination of charge carriers. Here, we developed an approach, for the first time, to construct a curly-like carbon nitride nanosheets with the formation of in-plane surface dyadic heterostructure for steering the charge transfer and optimizing the electronic band structure . This PCN material shows superior photoreforming H 2 evolved activity of 122.77 μmolh −1 (i.e. 4092 μmolh −1 g −1 ) from the aqueous lignocellulose solution (using Pt as cocatalyst), 15.6 folds of pristine PCN under visible light irradiation, together with an apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 7.87% (λ = 420 nm). It enables the visible-light-driven conversion of several kinds of lignocellulose including the monosaccharides, disaccharides, hemicellulose , and cellulose . Additionally, when used as a photocatalyst for water splitting, it achieves a remarkable H 2 production rate of 22043 μmolh −1 g −1 (∼56.0 folds’ increases than pristine PCN) with a superior high AQE of 41.2%, as well as a high CO reduction rate of 56.3 μmolh −1 from the photocatalytic CO 2 conversion, 24.5 times than pristine PCN.

Noble metal-free NiS2 with rich active sites loaded g-C3N4 for highly efficient photocatalytic H2 evolution under visible light irradiation

Haitao Li,Ming Wang,Yiping Wei,Fei Long

A series of noble-metal-free NiS 2 -loaded g-C 3 N 4 hybrid composites were prepared via simple hydrothermal method. Benefited from the wider spectral response range and the effective separation of photoelectron-holes of g-C 3 N 4 -NiS 2 heterojunction catalysts, as well as the rich unsaturated active S atoms on the NiS 2 with S 2 2− , the composite catalysts has prominent photocatalytic performance for H 2 evolution. Remarkably, the optimal composite photocatalysts achieved an average hydrogen production rate as high as 715.83 μmol/h/g in 3 h under visible-light irradiation, which is 2.75 times as high as that of precious metal Pt (259.5 μmol/h/g) as a co-catalyst. Besides, the composite catalyst still shows prominent photocatalytic performance for H 2 evolution after three continuous photocatalytic reaction cycles for 9 h. This study provided a facile method to build a low-cost but effective metal sulfide co-catalyst for hydrogen production under visible light irradiation.

Mn-S chemical bond mediated Z-scheme photocatalyst boosting efficient H2 evolution with apparent quantum yield exceeding 32% under visible light

Zhiping Yan,Xin Wang,Ruiding Fei,Ruixue Zhu,Jianfeng Zhao,Wenchao Wang

Developing a highly effective solar-to-H 2 conversion system is a promising strategy for carbon neutrality. Here, we report a chemically bonded Z-scheme photocatalyst by specifically linking the conduction band site of ZnIn 2 S 4 with the valence band site of Mn 0.3 Cd 0.7 S 1-x . Deviates from the typical van der Waals interactions between two semiconductors, the in-built robust binding force (Mn-S bond) and charge transfer channel facilitates the electron mobility, minimizes detrimental deep charge trapping, and prolongs the active charge lifetime from 983 ps to 4250 ps. The sulfur vacancies in Mn 0.3 Cd 0.7 S 1-x are partially refilled by atoms of the same element in ZnIn 2 S 4 during the in-situ formation of heterojunctions, which promotes and solidates the establishment of interfacial chemical bonds. The optimal photocatalyst achieves a high quantum efficiency of 32.71 % at 420 nm. This study offers a new insight into the development of Z-Scheme heterojunctions via a synergistic approach involving doping, vacancy filling and strong interfacial chemical bonds.

Boosting exciton dissociation and charge transfer in P-doped 2D porous g-C3N4 for enhanced H2 production and molecular oxygen activation

Yao Zhang,Jingshu Yuan,Liang Zhao,Boyu Wu,Bolin Zhang,Pianpian Zhang,Shengen Zhang,Chaofang Dong

Graphite carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) is regarded as a potential candidate to settle environmental and energy issues, but its activity remains unsatisfactory due to the huge exciton effect and delayed charge transfer. Herein, the effects of phosphorus-doping and two-dimensional (2D) porous structures on the transition among singlet excitons, triplet excitons, and carriers and consequently the regulation mechanism of reactive oxygen species have been intensively studied. The calculations of the density functional theory and experimental results confirmed that P-doping could induce a dual built-in electric field to provide a driving force (up to 0.3 eV) for exciton dissociation. The light response capability, exciton dissociation, and carrier migration efficiency were significantly enhanced by the synergistic effect of the dual electric field and 2D porous structure. The optimal sample exhibited excellent H 2 evolution rate and tetracycline degradation rate under visible-light irradiation which were approximately 25 and 7.1 times higher than those of bulk g-C 3 N 4 , respectively. The improved photocatalytic activity can also be demonstrated by a 2.9-fold and 3.2-fold increase in ·O 2 – and H 2 O 2 production, respectively. This work provides a new perspective and approach to improve the performance of polymer photocatalysts and the targeted regulation of active species using exciton engineering.

Fabrication of CdS/Pt/MIL-125 with Effective Spatial Separation for Improved Visible-Light Catalytic H2 Evolution Using γ-Ray Irradiation

Chen Tai,Huarong Liu,Yuan Hu

Hydrogen is a very promising green energy alternative to fossil fuel owing to both environmental friendliness and high-energy nature; however, improving the hydrogen production efficiency of photocatalysts under visible light has remained a challenge. Herein, CdS/Pt/MIL-125 nanocomposite has been fabricated using γ-ray irradiation, where Pt and CdS nanoparticles with clean surfaces are well dispersed inside and on the surface of MIL-125, respectively, which greatly promotes effective space separation of photogenerated carriers and thus improves the visible-light catalytic activity. The hydrogen generation rate of CdS/Pt/MIL-125 nanocomposite is found up to 6783.5 μmol/(g·h) under visible-light illumination, which is 7.3 times that of CdS/MIL-125 without Pt as electron trap reservoirs and 4.4 times that of Pt/CdS/MIL-125 without effective spatial separation between CdS and Pt. The reason is attributed to the synergy of ternary CdS/Pt/MIL-125 with a unique ordered mesoporous structure that may widen the absorption range of the light, improve the efficiency of light harvesting, facilitate mass transfer, prevent the aggregation of CdS and Pt nanoparticles, suppress the electron–hole (e–h) pair recombination, and provide more active sites. Moreover, the loading amount of Pt or CdS nanoparticles also affects the activity of CdS/Pt/MIL-125 nanocomposite for visible-light catalytic H2 evolution. In view of the extensive use of γ-ray irradiation in industry, this research presents a rational route to the fabrication of novel hybrid photocatalysts for improved visible-light catalytic hydrogen evolution.
