High-value conversion of agroforestry residues into carbon dots (CDs)-based phosphors for white light emitting diodes (WLEDs) suffers from difficulty in adjusting fluorescence from the blue to red region. In this paper, xylan from sugar cane bagasse was utilized as a precursor to fabricate blue (B), green (G), yellow (Y), and red (R) fluorescent CDs with p-phenylenediamine by solvent modulation. The quantum yields of B-, G-, Y-, and R-CDs were 23.5%, 4.5%, 2.2%, and 15.4%, respectively. The formation and tuning mechanism of multicolor CDs were elucidated by structural characterization and density-functional theory (DFT) calculations. The results showed that the increased carbonization of CDs and graft of C═O on the CD surface by xylan passivation are two key reasons for the red-shift of fluorescence emission. WLEDs with color coordinates located at (0.30, 0.31) were successfully prepared by B-, G-, and R-CD/epoxy composites. In addition, the G-CD/epoxy composite demonstrated phosphorescence property and potential application in information security encryption. This study provides new avenues for the high-value utilization of agroforestry residues.

Due to the unique features of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) in analytical chemistry, a series of TMB-based colorimetric nitrite assays (particularly nanozyme-involved) were developed to supplement the classical Griess assay. However, the exact reaction mechanisms and the final product between TMB and NO2– are controversial. Herein, we found that the widely adopted mechanism, namely the reaction between NO2– and the one-electron oxidation product of TMB (TMB+•), may be not valid. Alternatively, we found the reaction between NO2– and TMB primarily proceeded via diazotization (confirmed with ESI-MS) and yielded yellow diazo-TMB (not TMB2+, the two-electron oxidation product of TMB). In the presence of an easily ignored condition of visible light, diazo-TMB was promoted to its excited state, followed by two photoreactions to yield blue TMB+•, namely photoreduction ([diazo-TMB]* + TMB → TMB+•) and photosensitized oxidation ([diazo-TMB]* + O2 → 1O2, 1O2 + TMB → TMB+•). To facilitate the colorimetric process, a blue LED with a lighting wavelength matching with the maximum absorption of diazo-TMB, was employed to accelerate the generation of TMB+•. The light-driven colorimetric nitrite assay offered a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.1 μM, which was further explored to nitrite detection in urine samples and diagnosis of urinary tract infections caused by Escherichia coli.

The high-temperature solid state reaction approach was used to successfully synthesize novel tunable-color emitting Ca 2 LuTaO 6 phosphors with double perovskite structure that were un-doped, single-doped, and co-doped with Bi 3+ /Sm 3+ ions. The crystal structure, microstructure, steady-state photoluminescence, time-resolved luminescence measurements, and thermal quenching features of the material were studied. The density functional theory method was used to compute the band gap of the Ca 2 LuTaO 6 , and Ca 2 LuTaO 6 : Bi 3+ , Sm 3+ phosphors. The blue emission at 407 nm (with 313 nm excitation) is due to the host's luminescence, while the cyan emission at 480 nm (under 365 nm excitation) is related to the distinctive 3 P n − 1 S 0 transitions (n = 0, 1, 2) of Bi 3+ . Similarly, efficient red emission is observed in the case of Sm 3+ single-doped Ca 2 LuTaO 6 phosphors. In addition, the Ca 2 LuTaO 6 : 0.04Bi 3+ , 0.05 S m 3+ phosphors exhibit energy transfer phenomena and have excellent thermal stability, the fluorescence intensity at 150 °C maintains 73% of that at 25 °C and has a small chromaticity shift. The intense blue emission at 407 nm was effectively converted to cyan, red, and white light through doping with Bi 3+ and Sm 3+ , and the resulting energy transfer. The results obtained confirm that Ca 2 LuTaO 6 : Bi 3+ , Sm 3+ phosphors as a single matrix have great potential for high-power WLED applications.

Recently, direct non-oxidative conversion of methane (NOCM) into hydrogen and light hydrocarbons has garnered considerable attention. In our work, we employed a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma over a GaN/SBA15 catalyst for NOCM. Adding catalyst to plasma remarkably promotes the conversion of CH 4 , resulting in a significant improvement, for instance, from 27.8 to 39.2%. A systematic investigation of plasma performance at different discharge powers with and without catalyst was conducted. In the case of plasma + 15wt% GaN/SBA15, CH 4 conversion reaches an impressive 79.4%. However, it exhibits the lowest selectivity of 14.4% for C 2 +, while achieving the highest selectivity for hydrogen at 48.9%. Several characterization methods, including XRD, SEM, BET, XPS, and TPO-MS, were used to study the mechanism of the reaction. Plasma electrons and ions can effectively interact with activated CH3 radicals, promoting their adsorption onto Ga sites on the catalyst surface. Simultaneously, hydrogen atoms adsorb onto neighboring N atoms, rapidly delocalizing to produce H 2 , and the delocalization of hydrogen atoms in C species leads to the formation of species like CxHy. This study highlights the potential of plasma catalysis in significantly improving CH 4 conversion at lower temperatures and atmospheric pressure.

Environmentally friendly polypyrrole (PPy) catalysts with conjugated nanostructures for superior photophysical and photoelectric applications are developed. The high coplanar structure via α-α connection is benefit for the transferring of photo-induced electron and improving the life of the light generated carrier. Importantly, the energy level structure of conjugated polymers was obtained via theoretical calculation and the photocatalytic mechanism of PPy photocatalyst was illuminated in detail. O 2 − are the main radical responsible for the degradation of MO. Moreover, conjugated PPy photocatalysts are stable with cycling. Compared to P25 and g-C 3 N 4 , PPy showed excellent photocatalytic performance for degradation of organic pollutants in full spectrum and visible light, the reaction rate constants of PPy are 4.27 and 5.31 times as much as the P25, respectively. Furthermore, PPy also exhibited effective photocatalytic performance towards different organic pollutants. These results obviously open interesting perspectives of using conjugated polymer and provide theoretical guidance for designing new organic photocatalysts to solve the energy and environment issues.

Vast progress in semiconductor photocatalysis has been witnessed, while the earth-abundant insulators were seldomly explored. In this work, we exploited insulator BaSO 4 as photocatalyst by constructing a novel branch of insulator-semiconductor heterostructure with the narrow-gap CuS. The finely designed BaSO 4 -CuS heterostructure achieved a tetracycline (TC) degradation pseudo-first-order kinetic constant of 1.4 × 10 −2 min −1 , which was 311, 21 and 18 times higher than that of BaSO 4 , CuS and their physical mixture, respectively. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations unraveled that the intense Cu-O covalent interaction created a specific channel for interfacial electrons transfer from semiconductor to insulator. The elevated redox potential of CuS is vital for the accumulation of ·O 2 - and motivation of ·OH, thus remarkedly accelerating TC mineralization. Furthermore, the degradation pathway and intermediates of TC were thoroughly studied through LC-MS. The current work provides new perspectives to harvest visible-light-driven insulator photocatalysts and demonstrates its promising applications for environmental remediation.

Efficient and stable blue emission of perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) is a requisite toward their potential applications in full-color displays and solid-state lighting. Rational manipulation over the entire electroluminescence process is promising to break the efficiency limit of blue PeLEDs. Herein, a facile device architecture is proposed to achieve efficient blue PeLEDs for simultaneously reducing the energetic loss during electron-photon conversion and boosting the light outcoupling. Effective interfacial engineering is employed to manipulate the perovskite crystallization nucleation, enabling highly compact perovskite nanocrystal assemblies and suppressing the trap-induced carrier losses by means of interfacial hydrogen bonding interactions. This strategy contributes to a high external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 12.8% for blue PeLEDs emitting at 486 nm as well as improved operational stability. Moreover, blue PeLEDs reach a peak EQE of 16.8% with the incorporation of internal outcoupling structures for waveguided light, which can be further raised to 27.5% by integrating a lens-based structure for substrate-mode light. These results verify the validity of this strategy in producing efficient and stable blue PeLEDs for practical applications.

Understanding and manipulating the photoluminescence (PL) of all-inorganic perovskites is significant in applications toward light-emitting diodes. Doping has proved to be a very promising approach for tuning the luminescence properties of perovskites. Herein, rare earth (Er and Yb) doped 3D all-inorganic perovskite flakes (CsPb(Cl/Br) 3 ) are synthesized. At room temperature, they possess a narrow emission peak at 506 nm with 10 nm linewidth and a quite broad peak at 700 nm with 170 nm linewidth, which are from band-edge PL of α-CsPb(Cl/Br) 3 and self-trapped excitons of δ-CsPb(Cl/Br) 3 , respectively. When exposing the flakes under a light-soaking, the samples present a color tuning capability spanning from red to green by extension of the soaking time, and the emission properties can recover by removing the light-soaking and undergoing a certain recovery time. Time-resolved photoluminescence indicates a photoinduced reduction of defects density in the doped perovskite flakes. Based on further density functional theory calculations, a photoinduced O 2 -diffused defect-passivation mechanism is proposed. The discovery is expected to promote the optical tuning capability of the all-inorganic perovskites and expand their potential application in optoelectronics devices.

Highly efficient lead halide perovskites with tunable emission performance have become new candidate materials for light-emitting devices and displays; however, the toxicity of lead and instability of halide perovskites greatly limits their application. Herein, rapid and large-scale synthesis of highly emissive organic–inorganic manganese halide perovskites, (C 5 H 6 N) 2 MnBr 4 and C 5 H 6 NMnCl 3 , are presented by a one-pot solution-based method, of which (C 5 H 6 N) 2 MnBr 4 displays a high absolute photoluminescence quantum yield (95%) in the solid-state. The developed (C 5 H 6 N) 2 MnBr 4 perovskite noticeably exhibits high stability. Therefore both as-synthesized green and red emissive manganese-based phosphors with superior optical properties are used to fabricate blue light pumped white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs), displaying excellent quality white light with a high color rendering index value of 91 and a correlated color temperature of 5331 K. This study not only presents the robust large-scale production synthetic approach for organic–inorganic manganese halide perovskites, but also facilitates the development of high-performance phosphors for future lighting and display technologies.

The light-addressable electrochemical sensor (LAES) enables spatially resolved electrochemical measurements without the need for physical interconnects and fixed electrode geometries. However, current LAES constructions predominantly rely on rigid inorganic semiconductors, limiting their compatibility with flexible electronics. Herein, we present a novel LAES platform based on the organic semiconductor poly(1,3,5-triethynylbenzene) (PTEB), synthesized via a mild copper-catalyzed Glaser coupling reaction. The resulting PTEB film exhibits an interconnected porous network morphology and a direct bandgap of 2.15 eV, along with strong photoelectrochemical responsiveness, high pH sensitivity, and microscale imaging resolution. Particularly, PTEB films deposited on conductive polyester substrates retained 95 % of their photocurrent response under mechanical bending, underscoring excellent mechanical stability. This work addresses key limitations of conventional inorganic semiconductor-based LAES and provides a promising material platform for the development of next-generation flexible and wearable LAES devices.

Lead-free double perovskites (LFDPs) have attracted considerable attention in recent years owing to their distinctive optical characteristics. While multi-component phosphor blends dominate commercial white light-emitting diode (WLED), the pursuit of efficient white light generation from a single crystalline lattice has yet to overcome critical bottlenecks in emission harmonization. In this study, we present a triple-doped rare-earth double perovskite, Cs 2 NaLuCl 6 : Sb 3+ , Tb 3+ , Sm 3+ . We pioneer a competitive energy transfer engineering strategy in this material, in which orchestrated energy routing from Sb 3+ to Tb 3+ and Sm 3+ enables precise spectral harmonization. This overcomes the long-standing efficiency-color quality trade-off in single-matrix WLEDs, which can be precisely controlled via dopant ratio optimization. Both steady-state and time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy were used to investigate the synthesis and luminescence behavior of the triple-doped Cs 2 NaLuCl 6 : Sb 3+ , Tb 3+ , Sm 3+ . Analysis of the PL spectra reveals three key energy transfer mechanisms: (i) Sb 3+ → Tb 3+ , (ii) Sb 3+ → Sm 3+ , and (iii) Tb 3+ → Sm 3+ . Temperature-dependent PL spectra demonstrate exceptional thermal stability, and the luminous intensity decreases by only 8.8 % at high temperatures of 473 K. By fine-tuning the dopant concentrations, precise control over the CIE coordinates within the white-light region is achieved, driven by competitive energy transfer dynamics. In addition, the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) reaches 38.29 % in a Cs 2 NaLuCl 6 Single Crystal (SC) co-doped with 0.5 % Sb 3+ , 60 % Tb 3+ , and 25 % Sm 3+ . When incorporated into WLED devices, these phosphors deliver a color rendering index (CRI) of 94.7, a correlated color temperature (CCT) of 5018 K, and a near-ideal white light emission with CIE coordinates of (0.344, 0.338). This work provides a high-performance single-matrix white light emitter for WLEDs and a practical energy transfer design strategy for rare-earth-doped LFDPs, promising to advance lead-free perovskite applications in solid-state lighting.

Ferrihydrite is an important geosorbent and catalyst that is ubiquitous in natural environments, and plays a critical role in regulating the speciation and migration of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)). Phosphate has a strong affinity for ferrihydrite surfaces, but it remains unclear how phosphate influences the immobilization of Cr(VI) by ferrihydrite in sunlight-influenced surface environments. Herein, the surface interactions of ferrihydrite and Cr(VI) in the presence of phosphate were studied under mercury lamp irradiation. Results showed that mercury lamp irradiation significantly attenuated the inhibitory effect of phosphate on Cr(VI) removal by ferrihydrite compared to that under dark conditions. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS) analysis revealed that Cr(III) was the predominant chromium species immobilized on ferrihydrite surfaces. Specifically, the reduction of Cr(VI) produced CrPO 4 precipitates, whereas the released Fe(III) can also co-adsorb with phosphate (i.e., FePO 4 ) onto ferrihydrite surfaces. The reduction of Cr(VI) mediated by the generated Fe(II) species and photoelectrons effectively reduces the electrostatic repulsion between Cr(VI) and phosphate, thereby enhancing the immobilization of these two ions on ferrihydrite. Energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS) results provide direct quantitative evidence that mercury lamp irradiation substantially enhances the immobilization of Cr(VI) and phosphate by ferrihydrite. The above-described results account for the effect of phosphate on the light-induced coupling process of ferrihydrite reductive dissolution and Cr(VI) reductive immobilization, advancing our understanding of the geochemical cycle of Cr(VI) pollution in sunlight-influenced surface environments.
