Modification of a MoS2 composite membrane using nano-silica for high-efficiency dye separation

Xiaoyu Yang,Hongdan Wu,Zhihui Zhou,Yehao Zhao,Yuedong Li

Two-dimensional (2D) layered MoS2 membrane has a unique pore structure, adjustable interlayer spacing and excellent transmission performance, which has wide-ranging and excellent application prospects for water treatment. However, the MoS2 membrane exhibits a narrow interlayer height, which can only accommodate one layer of water molecules, causing low water permeation and flux. In this work, a MoS2/SiO2 composite membrane with regular transport channels was prepared by the vacuum-assisted self-assembly (VASA) process using the intercalation of nano-silica (SiO2) nanoparticles. The resulting membrane showed an increase in interlayer widths from 0.61 nm to 0.69 nm. The MoS2/SiO2 composite membrane featured a high-efficiency dye separation performance and aqueous stability as the mass ratio of MoS2/SiO2 was 2.5, and the water permeance flux could reach 979 L m−2 h−1 bar−1, with a rejection of 100% for Evans blue (EB), methyl blue (MB) and neutral red (NR) and a rejection of over 98% for rhodamine B (RhB). MoS2 membranes decorated by SiO2 nanosheet nanoparticles could effectively achieve precision regulation of interlayer spacings and hold the channel order of MoS2 laminates. In addition, the rejection rate of the composite membrane remained 100% after remaining immersed in strong oxidizing acid for up to 60 days, which showed their stability toward strong acid and oxidative environments. This work suggests that an interlayer manipulation strategy in 2D laminar membranes could improve membrane performance for wastewater treatment and other separations.

A voltammetric immunosensor for clenbuterol based on the use of a MoS2-AuPt nanocomposite

Ji Renyue,Chen Shuai,Xu Wei,Qin Zhen,Qiu Jing Fu,Li Chao Rui

An ultrasensitive immunosensor for the direct detection of the illegally used livestock feed clebuterol (CLB) is described. It is based on the use of a glassy carbon electrode modified with an MoS 2 -AuPt nanocomposite and on biotin-streptavidin interaction. The use of MoS 2 -AuPt accelerates electron transfer, and this leads to a sharp increase in the electrochemical signal for the electrochemical probe hydrogen peroxide. Differential pulse voltammetry was used to record the current signal at a peak potential of −0.18 V (vs SCE). Under optimal conditions, the electrode has a linear response in the 10 pg·mL −1 to 100 ng·mL −1 CLB concentration range and a 6.9 pg·mL −1 detection limit (based on the 3σ criterium). This immunosensor is sensitive, highly specific and acceptably reproducible, and thus represents a valuable tool for the determination of CLB in pork. Schematic of a voltammetric immunosensor for the determination of clenbuterol (CLB) based on the use of a nanocomposite prepared from molybdenum disulfide and a gold-platinum alloy (MoS 2 -AuPt), and making use of the biotin-streptavidin system.

Controlling dispersion and morphology of MoS2 nanospheres by hydrothermal method using SiO2 as template

Zhenwei Zhang,Peng Wang,Fei Wang,Yaqing Li,Wei Lu,Xingmao Jiang,Xia Gui,Zhi Yun

Monodispersed MoS 2 nanospheres were successfully synthesized by using SiO 2 as hard template. The size and morphology of the MoS 2 nanospheres could be finely controlled by the content of SiO 2 and sulfur precursors. Furthermore, higher surface area of monodispersed MoS 2 nanospheres exhibited high reaction rate for hydrodesulfurization (HDS) of dibenzenethiophene (DBT).

Effect of Cobalt Doping on the Electrochemical Performance of MoS2/CNTs for Supercapacitor Applications

Wei Zhiqiang,Zhou Meipan,Zhang Huining,Bai Jinglong,Ding Meijie,Li Zhiming,Yu Qingsong

In this study, transition metal sulfide composites were synthesized through a cost-effective and simple hydrothermal method, intended for use as electrode materials in supercapacitors. Studies have shown that the material has excellent electrochemical properties. During the preparation of MoS 2 /carbon nanotubes (CNTs), when 1 mmol of cobalt nitrate replaces sodium molybdate, the composite material achieves a specific capacitance of 1560 A g −1 at a current density of 1 A g −1 and 1335 A g −1 at 10 A g −1 , demonstrating excellent rate performance. After 5000 charge/discharge cycles at a current density of 10 A g −1 , the material maintains a capacity retention of 83.1%, with a coulombic efficiency close to 100%. When assembled into a hybrid capacitor, the specific capacitance still reaches 128.9 F g −1 at a current density of 1 A g −1 , still has 54% capacity retention at a current density of 10 A g −1 , and provides an energy density of 45.83 W h kg −1 at a power density of 800.92 W kg −1 , demonstrating its potential application value in high-efficiency energy storage devices.

Controllable Regulation of MoS2 Surface Atomic Exposure for Boosting Interfacial Polarization and Microwave Absorption

Jian Wang,Zhengchen Wu,Chendi Yang,Guanyu Chen,Mingyue Yuan,Bangxin Li,Yuxiang Lai,Renchao Che

Atomic-level surface design of 2D materials, which benefits from their ultra-high occupancy of surface atoms, has demonstrated significant potential for regulating electronic states. Despite efforts to explore heterojunctions on 2D surfaces, the stacking-dominated surface electronic structures and their influences on dielectric polarization remain unclear. Herein, a confined growth strategy is proposed to accurately adjust the surface atom occupancy of MoS 2 nanoflakes and thereby boost the polarization-dominated microwave absorption (MA). By altering the stacking layer number from single layers to tens of layers of MoS 2 , the charge transfer from graphite substrate to MoS 2 surface atoms, accompanied by the formation of local electric fields, reaches its highest intensity at two layers and then degrades dramatically with thicker MoS 2 nanoflakes. The strengthened dielectric properties eventually enhance the MA performance, increasing the maximum absorption intensity (41.9 dB) by 346% and the effective absorption bandwidth (3 GHz) by 750%. These discoveries shed new light on the electronic modification of 2D materials and their electromagnetic functionalization.

Thermo-responsive and biodegradable MoS2-based nanoplatform for tumor therapy and postoperative wound management

Yichen Yin,Nan Wang,Bin Hu,Jiaxuan Guo,Qian Chen,Zheng Chen,Mohammad-Ali Shahbazi,Lissette Agüero,Shige Wang,Cheng Li

Inorganic nanoparticles serve as versatile nanoplatforms for efficient cancer diagnosis and therapy. However, their limited in vivo degradability and excretion rates may lead to various adverse effects. Furthermore, the cascade-controlled release of drugs remains a challenge. In this study, we developed a free-radical triggered degradable MoS 2 -AIPH@LA nanoplatform for tumor photothermal and oxygen-independent thermodynamic therapy. This was achieved by loading the free radical initiator (2,2′-azobis[2-(2-imidazolin-2-yl) propane] dihydrochloride (AIPH)) onto MoS 2 nanoparticles and encapsulating them with thermo-responsive lauric acid (LA). Upon laser irradiation, the hyperthermia generated by MoS 2 induces cancer cell death and releases AIPH, an oxygen-independent and thermal-responsive radical initiator capable of producing toxic alkyl free radicals for tumor therapy and inhibiting bacterial growth. Importantly, these free radicals promote the degradation rate of MoS 2 -AIPH@LA, further facilitating a rapid AIPH release and improving the biocompatibility of the MoS 2 -AIPH@LA nanoplatform. In particular, the thermo-responsive nature of LA in this formulation effectively regulates the release of AIPH, thus reducing potential AIPH leakage into the bloodstream and minimizing safety risks. With its free-radical-triggered degradation and cascade-controlled release capabilities, MoS 2 -AIPH@LA shows significant promise for inhibiting tumor proliferation and managing postoperative bacterial infection.

The Preparation of MoS2/Metal Nanocomposites Functionalized with N-Oleoylethanolamine: Application as Lubricant Additives

Yaping Xing,Zhiguo Liu,Weiye Zhang,Zhengfeng Jia,Weifang Han,Jinming Zhen,Ran Zhang

In this study, MoS2nanosheets have been prepared and treated ultrasonically with silver ammonia solutions. The MoS2/Ag precursor was reduced using dopamine (DA) as reducing and linking agent at room temperature, and it was subjected to a hydrothermal treatment to produce MoS2/Ag nanocomposites (denoted as MoAg). The MoAg samples were functionalized with N-oleoylethanolamine to improve dispersion in the base oil component of additives. Use of the functionalized MoAg (denoted as Fc-MoAg) as a lubricant additive for steel balls resulted in effective friction reduction and anti-wear. This work avoids ion exchange during exfoliation, and the Ag+has been reduced to nano-silver particles by dopamine to enlarge the layer spaces of MoS2. Taking the case of lubrication with base oil containing Fc-Mo0.6Ag15, the wear scar diameters and coefficients of friction of the steel balls were 0.428 and 0.098 mm, respectively, which were about three-fifths base oil. In addition, MoS2/Cu and MoS2/Ni nanocomposites were synthesized and the tribological properties associated with steel/steel balls assessed. The results demonstrate that all MoS2/metal composites exhibit enhanced tribological behavior in the steel/steel pair tests. Both nanocomposite synergy and the tribofilm containing sulfide, oxide, carbide, and other compounds play important roles in achieving reduced friction and improved anti-wear. The friction and wear properties of base oil containing Fc-MoAg and commercial additives were evaluated using a four-ball wear tester with steel/steel, steel/zirconia and zirconia/zirconia pairs. The base oil containing Fc-MoAg delivered smaller coefficients of friction (COFs) and/or scarring groove depths than those observed with the use of pure base oil and base oil containing commercial additives.

Pd nanoflakes epitaxially grown on defect MoS2 nanosheets for enhanced nitroarenes hydrogenation to anilines

Shanhui Zhu,Zexiang Lv,Xiangyu Jia,Jiamin Wang,Xiaoming Li,Mei Dong,Weibin Fan

Hydrogenation of nitroarenes to anilines under mild conditions is attractive from both theoretical and practical viewpoints. Here, high-performance catalyst with layered Pd nanoparticles epitaxially growing on ultrathin MoS 2 nanosheets (Pd/MoS 2 ) were prepared. It shows surprisingly high catalytic activity, selectivity and stability for hydrogenation of various nitroarenes to corresponding anilines; the turnover frequency is one or two magnitudes higher than conventional Pd-based catalysts. Surface sulfur vacancies are formed on MoS 2 nanosheets with low formation energy barrier. These S vacancies provide efficient positions for adsorbing Pd atoms, which enables facile cleavage of N–O bond as result of strong interfacial electron interaction that decreases activation energy by 0.41 eV in comparison with conventional Pd catalysts. In situ spectroscopy and DFT calculation results reveal a dual-site mechanism, in which surface Pd sites adsorb and dissociate H 2 into active H*, and then readily reacts with nearby activated nitroarene to form aniline on interfacial Pd-MoS 2 sites.

Pei Yu,Fengting Luo,Shijian Chen

Rational designing Mo-based heterojunction catalysts as hydrogen evolution catalysts is seriously significant for the widespread utilization of hydrogen energy. Here, the ingenious hierarchical construction of MoP 2 /MoS 2 nanowires was delivered with high conductivity of porous MoP 2 and abundant active sites of defect-rich MoS 2 . Under synergistic effect of two materials, this catalyst achieves a dramatically optimized electronic structure to boost hydrogen evolution in all-pH range. The optimal MoP 2 /MoS 2 /CC nanoreactor showed overpotentials of 47.11, 60.16, and 89.83 mV to drive −10 mA cm −2 and Tafel slopes of 51.69, 52.04, and 73.79 mV dec −1 in acidic, alkaline, and neutral media, respectively. This finding may provide an effective approach for elevating the pH-universal electrocatalytic performance in order to achieve industrial hydrogen evolution.

Study on the performance of MoS2/Au composites for non-enzymatic electrochemical glucose detection

Y Zhang,W H Fang,Y J Zhai,J H Li

Glucose concentration is considered an indicator for the diagnosis of diabetes, highlighting the importance of accurate glucose detection. Non-enzymatic electrochemical sensors have been extensively studied for glucose detection applications, with nanocomposites composed of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) and gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) demonstrating high catalytic activity. In this study, a nanocomposite material composed of MoS2 and Au NPs (MoS2/Au) was synthesized and employed to construct a non-enzymatic electrochemical glucose biosensor. The detection limit of this sensor was explored, reaching as low as 1 mM. Additionally, compared to MoS2, the MoS2/Au nanocomposite exhibited a higher linear correlation coefficient and sensitivity, with a linear range of 1–25 mM and a sensitivity of 417.556 μA mM−1 cm−2. The sensor demonstrated excellent performance within the range of human blood glucose concentrations, showing potential for real-time monitoring and precise measurement of glucose levels. Furthermore, it exhibited good stability and reproducibility. These findings indicate the potential applications of MoS2/Au in biosensors and immunoassays.

The tribological properties and synergistic lubrication mechanism of MoS2/AlOOH nanosheets as lubricant additives

Deping Xia,Yonggang Wang,Hui Liu,Hualin Lin,Sheng Han

The MoS 2 /AlOOH nanocomposites were prepared through a facile one-pot hydrothermal method and subsequently employed as lubricating oil additives to improve the tribological properties of PAO4 base oil. The structure, composition, morphology, tribological properties, and lubrication mechanism of the MoS 2 /AlOOH nanocomposites have been investigated. The results demonstrated that the in-situ assembly of MoS 2 on the surface of AlOOH change their microstructure, resulting in enhanced dispersion and a reduction in friction and wear. At 0.5 wt% concentrations of MoS 2 /AlOOH nanocomposites, the average COF, WSD, and wear volume were decreased by 50.47 %, 42.34 %, and 86.57 % compared to base oil, respectively. Moreover, the tribological behaviors of the PAO4 containing MoS 2 /AlOOH nanocomposites under various conditions were explored as well. Furthermore, based on the analysis of micromorphology and composition of wear surfaces, a synergistic lubrication mechanism for MoS 2 /AlOOH nanocomposites has been proposed, which involves the formation of a tribochemical film composed of Fe 2 O 3 , Fe 3 O 4 , MoS 2 , and Al 2 O 3 and demonstrates remarkable capabilities in reducing friction and wear. This research might provide new insight into enhancing the tribological properties of MoS 2 -based additives through the composite method and promote the application of MoS 2 /AlOOH nanocomposites as additives.

Synthesis and potent antibacterial activity of nano-CuFe2O4/MoS2@Ag composite under visible light

Jiawei Wang,Ruirui Qiang,Qiaowei Miao,Ruiling Hu,Huihui Chen,Shaobo Guo,Zhifeng Liu

With antibiotic resistance on the rise due to misuse, the urgent need for new antibacterial materials has become paramount in global health. Herein, a CuFe 2 O 4 /MoS 2 (CFM) composite with a large specific surface area was synthesized through a simple hydrothermal method and physical adsorption, and the subsequent loading of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) onto its surface yielded the nanocomposite CuFe 2 O 4 /MoS 2 @Ag (CFMA) with a rough defect-rich surface. The nanocomposite demonstrates remarkable antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli , Staphylococcus aureus , and drug-resistant Salmonella ( T-Salmonella ) by releasing metal ions that alter the electrical potential of bacterial cell membranes, compromise the integrity of cell membranes, and produce reactive oxygen species that lead to oxidative stress. It thus achieves an antibacterial rate of 96 % against the three tested bacterial strains within just 20 min at a concentration of 200 μg/mL. The composite exhibits a broad-spectrum antibacterial effect against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, as well as drug-resistant bacteria. Moreover, CFM acts as a carrier that effectively prevents the aggregation of Ag NPs, and the magnetism of CuFe 2 O 4 facilitates the recovery of the antibacterial agent. This work provides new ideas and methods for the development of highly efficient, cost-effective, and biocompatible antibacterial materials.
