Oxygen-deficient TiO2 and carbon coupling synergistically boost the activity of Ru nanoparticles for the alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction

Zhongzhe Wei,Zijiang Zhao,Jing Wang,Qiang Zhou,Chenxia Zhao,Zihao Yao,Jianguo Wang

The limited reserves and sluggish H2O dissociation process of Pt necessitate the development of low-cost catalysts with enhanced catalytic performance in the alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction. Here, Ru nanoparticles supported on oxygen-deficient TiO2@carbon hybrids (Ru/TiO2-VO@C) were efficiently fabricated via one-pot carburization of RuCl3, TiO2(B) and melamine. The melamine additive assists the formation of oxygen vacancies (VO) and Ru0 and introduces a beneficial carbon dopant. Ru/TiO2-VO@C features a remarkably enhanced alkaline HER performance with an overpotential of only 64 mV to attain a current density of 10 mA cm−2. This satisfactory catalytic performance originates from the strong electronic interaction between Ru and TiO2-VO and the synergistic interplay between TiO2-VO and the carbon dopant. This synergistic cooperation improves the conductivity, promotes the dissociation of H2O and optimizes the hydrogen adsorption free energy. This study opens an avenue for the reasonable design of multi-component nanostructures and gives in-depth insights into the alkaline HER mechanism.

Assay for TET1 activity and its inhibitors screening with signal amplification by both nanoparticles and Ru(III) redox recycling

Ying Cheng,Jing Tang,Xue Chen,Fang Wang,Zilin Chen

Ten-eleven translocation protein 1 (TET1) is one member of TET proteins family which plays a key role in dynamic DNA methylation-demethylation process. Herein, a novel biosensor was constructed for TET1 detection and its inhibitors screening utilizing restriction digestion of endonuclease enzyme MspI. Half-methylated oligonucleotide (5mC DNA) was used as target and Ru(NH 3 ) 6 3+ as electrochemical signal probe. After the treatment by TET1 and T4 β-glucosyltransferase (T4 β-GT), target oligonucleotide would not be recognized and digested. If there was no TET1, the target would be digested and the response of biosensor decreased greatly. The current difference of biosensor with and without the incubation with TET1 was therefore dependent on the concentration of TET1. To increase sensitivity of the biosensor, nanostructured film at electrode surface and nanoparticles modified oligonucleotides were employed as signal amplification elements for Ru(NH 3 ) 6 3+ recycling. Finally, this biosensor showed high performance with a wide linear range of TET1 concentration from 3.5–21 ng/μL and a low detection limit of 0.33 ng/μL, which is superior to other existing methods. The inhibition effects of Bobcat339 on TET1 was successfully proved by our biosensor with an IC 50 of 38 μM. Not only that, but the feasibility of the biosensor for inhibitors screening was evaluated and further confirmed by other compounds including two anticancer drugs and three active ingredients of traditional Chinese medicine.

Utilizing Cl coordination to facilitate Ru-Ag self-assembling into alloy and recover thermally-inactivated catalyst for propane combustion

Jin Chen,Xuelong Lv,Wenjian Xu,Xiaolan Li,Jing Chen,Hongpeng Jia

The exploit of simple method to synthesize and recover catalyst is meaningful to widespread application of environmental catalysis. Different from traditional knowledge about deposition of Ag cation by Cl anion, we find that Cl anion coordinates with Ru and Ag cations simultaneously to micro-micelles and results in homogeneously alloying of bimetals. The Ru-Ag alloy exhibits a remarkable activity and stability in propane catalytic oxidation at moderate condition, but is still inactivated by extremely-high temperature and humidity due to metal sintering and oxidation as well as support reconstruction. Fortunately, utilization of Cl coordination to extract and combine bimetals at redox condition is proved as a feasible and simple way to regenerate the thermally-inactivated catalyst. With in-situ characterization, the synergic effect between Ru and Ag on propane oxidation obeying Mars-van-Krevelen mechanism is revealed. Through monolith test, the practice application of Ru-Ag catalyst prepared via Cl-assisted method is thought to be promising.

Synergistic interaction between Ru and MgAl-LDH support for efficient hydrogen transfer reduction of carbonyl compounds under visible light

Pengqi Zhu,Mengting Gao,Jin Zhang,Zhiwei Wu,Ruiyi Wang,Yunwei Wang,Eric R. Waclawik,Zhanfeng Zheng

Coordinated Ru species, Ru/LDH, were applied to the reduction of carbonyl compounds via blue light irradiation under mild (45 °C, atmospheric argon pressure), ligand-free, and additive-free conditions. LDH can act as an efficient base catalyst to assist in formation of isopropoxide, requiring no additional base, because basic OH groups form an ordered distribution on LDH surface. The coordinated Ru species containing one OH and three oxygen atoms ligands deriving from the OH groups of LDH are a crucial component, for securing the active electron-deficient Ru species that favours formation of Ru-isopropoxide. The photocatalytic activity is related to the adsorption capacity of isopropyl alcohol near the electron-deficient Ru species and the formation of Ru-isopropoxide. The strong-metal-support interactions between Ru and LDH affect the coordination and the electronic surroundings of the Ru centres and have a significant effect on the photocatalytic activity.

A Ce/Ru Codoped SrFeO3−δ Perovskite for a Coke-Resistant Anode of a Symmetrical Solid Oxide Fuel Cell

Bangxin Li,Shuai He,Jibiao Li,Xiangling Yue,John T.S. Irvine,Deti Xie,Jiupai Ni,Chengsheng Ni

Employment of identical oxides for the cathode and anode in a symmetrical solid oxide fuel cell (SSOFC) is beneficial for decreasing the fabrication costs of a robust cell. Ce doping on the A site of SrFeO3 increased the structural stability in a reducing atmosphere, but ceria was found to exsolve from the perovskite during the cooling process in the air if the doping level reached 20 atom %. The additional doping of 5 atom % Ru in Sr0.8Ce0.2FeO3 on the Fe site could prevent the ceria segregation in air and induce the surface decomposition under fuel conditions for the formation of nanoscale SrO, CeO2, and Ru0. The SSOFC with Ce/Ru codoped SrFeO3 on a Sr- and Mg-doped LaGaO3 electrolyte showed a small Rp value (0.12 Ω cm2) when H2 and ambient air were used as fuel and oxidant, respectively. The peak power densities of 846 and 310 mW cm–2 were achieved at 800 °C using H2 and C3H8 as fuel, respectively. The excellent coke resistance of the anode could be related to the simultaneous in situ exsolution of CeO2, SrO, and Ru0 nanoparticles.

Ru Nanoparticles on a Sulfonated Carbon Layer Coated SBA-15 for Catalytic Hydrogenation of Furfural into 1, 4-pentanediol

Cui Kai,Qian Wei,Shao Zhengjiang,Zhao Xiuge,Gong Honghui,Wei Xinjia,Wang Jiajia,Chen Manyu,Cao Xiaoming,Hou Zhenshan

Furfural (FFR) is one of the most important biomass-derived chemicals. Its large-scale availability calls for the exploration of new transformation methods for further valorization. Herein, we demonstrate that Ru nanoparticles (Ru NPs)-supported on a sulfonated carbon layer coated SBA-15 can be employed as an efficient bi-functional catalyst for one step conversion of FFR into 1,4-pentanediol (1,4-PeDO). The optimum bi-functional catalyst can afford the full the conversion of FFR and 86% selectivity to 1,4-PeDO. The catalysts have been characterized thoroughly by using a complementary combination of powder X-ray diffraction, N 2 adsorption–desorption, scanning/transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The characterization revealed that acidic groups (–SO 3 H) have been introduced on the surface of the carbon layer coated SBA-15 support after sulfonation with 98% H 2 SO 4 and the surface acidity can be tuned facilely by the sulfonating time. Meantime, Ru(0) sites was highly dispersed via an impregnation and sequential reduction and directly adjacent to the surface –SO 3 H group. There existed an electronic interaction between Ru(0) sites and sulfonic groups, in which the electronic transfer from sulfonic sites to Ru(0) sites occurred. Brönsted acid sites (–SO 3 H) have a significant influence on the FFR conversion and the selectivity to 1,4-PeDO. The ordered mesoporous structure, the appropriate density of acid sites and the electron-rich Ru(0) sites accounted for the the excellent performance of the catalyst for an efficient production of 1,4-PeDO from FFR. Ru nanoparticles supported on hydrophilic mesoporous carbon catalyzed low-temperature hydrodeoxygenation of microalgae oil to alkanes at aqueous-phase

Arif Ali,Chen Zhao

The processing of an energy carrier such as microalgae oil into valuable fuels and chemicals is quite promising. Aqueous-phase processing is suitable for this purpose because the separation of intrinsic water from the algae cell is difficult. In this study, we synthesized ruthenium (Ru) nanoparticles supported on highly hydrophilic mesoporous carbon to catalyze the quantitative hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of microalgae oil to alkanes in a one-pot process at a low temperature (140 °C) in the aqueous phase. The mesoporous carbon was obtained by single-step calcination of starch and zinc chloride in nitrogen. The as-obtained carbon showed high surface areas and pore volumes, allowing high dispersion of Ru nanoparticles. The surface of the carbon material was rich in hydroxyl groups, as evidenced by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), infrared (IR) spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) measurements. As a result, the carbon material contacted preferably with the water phase versus the organic phase, improving the accessibility of substrates. On the other hand, the contact angle test results speculated the superior hydrophilic nature of mesoporous Ru/C (ZnCl 2 , starch) than commercial Ru/C. Both kinetics modeling and in situ IR monitoring in water revealed the superior performance of the hydrophilic mesoporous and hydrophilic Ru/C compared to a commercial Ru/C for the tandem hydrogenation of stearic acid and decarbonylation of stearyl alcohol. The herein designed hydrothermal carbon material was highly active, environmentally benign, sustainable, and recyclable material, and could be potentially used for other hydrogenation reactions in the aqueous phase.

Regulating electron density of NiFe-P nanosheets electrocatalysts by a trifle of Ru for high-efficient overall water splitting

Meijiao Qu,Yimin Jiang,Miao Yang,Shu Liu,Qifei Guo,Wei Shen,Ming Li,Rongxing He

Highly active and stable catalysts toward hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is extremely important but challenging for overall water splitting. Herein, a strategy by modulating surface electron densities is adopted to design new catalyst: the Ru-NiFe-P nanosheets on 3D self-supported nickel foam was developed by doping a small quantity of Ru into transition metals phosphates. The designed catalyst displays excellent electrocatalytic performance in 1.0 M KOH, with low overpotentials of 44 mV at 10 mA cm −2 for HER and 242 mV at 100 mA cm −2 for OER. Particularly, it only needs 1.47 V to yield 10 mA cm −2 for overall water splitting. Density functional theory calculations reveal that Ru-incorporated NiFe-P can generate new active sites on Ru atoms and increase the catalytic activity of original P sites leading to an optimal Gibbs free-energy on catalysts surface. This work offers a new perspective for designing admirable electrocatalysts.

Highly Active Ni–Ru Bimetallic Catalyst Integrated with MFI Zeolite-Loaded Cerium Zirconium Oxide for Dry Reforming of Methane

Chao Miao,Shumei Chen,Kaixuan Shang,Lixing Liang,Jing Ouyang

The dry reforming of methane (DRM) is a new potential technology that converts two major greenhouse gases into useful chemical feedstocks. The main challenge faced by this process is maintaining the catalyst with high catalytic activity and long-term stability. Here, a simple and effective preparation route for the synthesis of functional nanomolecular sieve catalysts (NiRuxCZZ5) from kaolinite tailings was developed for dry reforming of methane with CO2. The silica monoliths with flower-like spherical and micropore structures (ZSM-5) were prepared by crystal growth method, and the metal components were loaded by ultrasonic-assisted impregnation method. The NiRu0.5CZZ5 catalyst exhibited excellent catalytic performance (maxmium CO2 and CH4 conversions up to 100 and 95.6%, respectively) and very good stability (up to 100h). The interfacial confinement and the strong support interaction are principally responsible for the excellent catalytic activity of the catalyst. The in situ DRIFTS was used to elucidate the possible carbon conversion steps, and stable surface intermediates were also identified.

Surface/Interface Engineering of Hierarchical MoO2/MoNi4@Ru/RuO2 Heterogeneous Nanosheet Arrays for Alkaline Water Electrolysis with Fast Kinetics

Qiong Zhang,Ruixue Zhang,Yingxiu Zhao,Tiantian Sun,Jianyang Gao,Guang-Rui Xu,Zexing Wu,Yu Yang,Lei Wang

Comprehensive Summary Realizing the hydrogen economy by water electrolysis is an attractive approach for hydrogen production, while the efficient and stable bifunctional catalysts under high current densities are the bottleneck that limits the half-cell reactions of water splitting. Here, we propose an approach of hydrothermal and thermal annealing methods for robust MoO 2 /MoNi 4 @Ru/RuO 2 heterogeneous cuboid array electrocatalyst with multiplying surface-active sites by depositing a monolayer amount of Ru. Benefiting from abundant MoO 2 /MoNi 4 @Ru/RuO 2 heterointerfaces, MoO 2 /MoNi 4 @Ru/RuO 2 heterogeneous cuboid array electrocatalysts effectively drive the alkaline water splitting with superior hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performances. The synthesized MoO 2 /MoNi 4 @Ru/RuO 2 has high HER activity, which realizes the working overpotentials of 48 mV at 50 mA·cm –2 , further achieving overpotentials of 230 mV for industry-level 1000 mA·cm –2 in alkaline water electrolysis. Moreover, it also showed an enhanced OER activity than commercial RuO 2 with a small overpotential of 280 mV at 200 mA·cm –2 in alkaline media. When building an electrolyzer with electrodes of (–)MoO 2 /MoNi 4 @Ru/RuO 2 IIMoO 2 / MoNi 4 @Ru/RuO 2 (+), a cell voltage of 1.63 V and 1.75 V is just required to support the current density of 200 mA·cm –2 and 500 mA·cm –2 in alkaline water electrolysis, much lower than that of the electrolyzer of (–)Pt/CIIRuO 2 (+). This work demonstrates that MoO 2 /MoNi 4 @Ru/RuO 2 heterogeneous nanosheet arrays are promising candidates for industrial water electrolysis applications, providing a possibility for the exploration of water electrolysis with a large current density.

Construction of Cu–Ru bimetallic catalyst for the selective catalytic transfer hydrogenation of carbonyl (CO) in biomass-derived compounds

Bo Cai,Rui Kang,Junfeng Feng,Thomas L. Eberhardt,Zhongqing Ma,Qingge Zhu,Hui Pan

The catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) of levulinate ester to γ-valerolactone is one of the important reactions for production of renewable fuels from biomass. An efficient and robust bimetallic Cu–Ru catalyst were developed for the hydrogenation of biomass-derived ethyl levulinate to γ-valerolactone. A series of bimetallic catalysts were prepared and characterized in detail. Subsequently, the as-prepared catalysts were evaluated in the hydrogenation system of ethyl levulinate. The results showed that Cu–Ru/ZrO 2 –SO 3 –SiO 2 -450 catalyst provided 100 % GVL yield in 12 h at 180 °C. Meanwhile, it also exhibited high catalytic hydrogenation activity for the various biomass-derived carbonyl compounds. The structure-reactivity relationship of catalysts was investigated in detail, and the results show the interaction between support and metal sites played an important role in the hydrogenation activity. The sulfur species could tune the electronic states of metallic sites to gain optimal activity. Besides, the Cu–Ru/ZrO 2 –SO 3 –SiO 2 -450 catalyst performed excellent recyclability in five reaction runs without an obvious loss of activity.

Enzyme-mediated Ru@UiO-66@MnO2 NSs/thiamine-based ratiometric fluorescence sensor for visual detection of organophosphorus pesticide residues

Fei Tong,Zan Yang,Zheng Wang,Wenya Liu,Wanqi Jiang,Lu Zhu,Lei Wang,Mingming Zheng,Ruyan Hou,Yibin Zhou,Yingnan Liu

In view of the potential hazards of organophosphorus pesticides (OPs), this paper constructed a ratiometric fluorescent probe utilizing a functionalized metal–organic framework to detect OPs. Ru(bpy) 3 Cl 2 was encapsulated inside UiO-66 as a reference signal, and MnO 2 nanosheets (MnO 2 NSs) were grown on the surface to obtain [email protected] @MnO 2 NSs. Acetylcholinesterase catalyzed the decomposition of acetylcholine into reductive thiocholine, which consumed MnO 2 NSs, thus restoring the [email protected] fluorescence. Due to the enzymatic inhibition of OPs and the redox reaction between MnO 2 NSs and thiamine, this probe emitted blue fluorescence in the presence of OPs. The probe achieved linear responses to dichlorvos and chlorpyrifos with LODs of 9.99 × 10 -6 μg mL −1 and 9.99 × 10 -5 μg mL −1 . The probe exhibited a satisfactory recovery rate for OPs in green tea. Furthermore, a hydrogel detection platform was developed by embedding the probe into sodium alginate. Overall, this work provides a visual approach to detect OPs in agricultural products.
