Chiral β-amino alcohols represent a significant structural motif in many biologically active molecules. Developing an efficient biocatalytic method for synthesizing chiral β-amino alcohols with structural diversity is highly desirable. In this study, enzymatic hydroxymethylation of aryl-aliphatic aldehydes by benzaldehyde lyases (BALs) enabled the synthesis of α-hydroxymethyl ketones at high substrate loadings (200 mmol/L - 300 mmol/L). And the reductive amination of diverse α-hydroxymethyl ketones by amine dehydrogenases (AmDHs) was conducted for synthesizing chiral β-amino alcohols in high isolated yields (60 %-79 %). Furthermore, a one-pot, two-step enzymatic process involving BAL-catalyzed hydroxymethylation of aldehydes and subsequent AmDH-catalyzed reductive amination was developed, enabling the synthesis of aromatic, aliphatic and aryl-aliphatic ( S )-β-amino alcohols from corresponding aldehydes in good to excellent isolated yields (56 %-96 %) and excellent enantioselectivity (>99 % ee ). The practical utility of this methodology was further demonstrated through the synthesis of key intermediates for antiviral drug Telaprevir or ATP competitive ERK inhibitor BVD-523.

Cancer metastasis that is resistant to conventional therapies has become a major cause of patient death. Recent reports indicate that the neutrophil extracellular trap (NET) is closely associated with cancer distant metastases, and the cell-free DNA of NETs has been identified as the ligand of the transmembrane protein CCDC25 of cancer cells, acting as a chemokine to induce cancer cell migration to distant organs. In this work, we present the poly(aspartic acid) based-cationic materials to interfere with the interaction between NET-DNA and CCDC25, and furthermore to inhibit NET-DNA-mediated cancer cell chemotaxis and migration. Because of a stronger binding affinity to DNA and favorable retention in the liver, nanoparticulate poly(aspartic acid) derivatives (cANP) efficiently reduce the level of hepatic NET-DNA infiltration, leading to a significant suppression of cancer metastases in mice and several human metastatic models. Moreover, the cANP exhibits no toxicity to organs of animals during the entire treatment. Thus, this work suggests a strategy for controlling cancer metastases, which will benefit patients in clinics.

Complex operating conditions pose greater challenges for lubricants, making the development of multi-functional additives a trend. This research introduces a multifunctional Cu-Mo-S nanoparticle (CMS) additive, synthesized using a unique one-pot in situ method. The CMS significantly improved the tribological performance and oxidation stability of base oils. Specifically, 0.5 wt% CMS manifested a remarkable reduction in the friction coefficient and wear volume of ester-based oils by 74.75% and 95.91%, accompanied by a noteworthy increase in the extreme pressure capabilities exceeding 50%, outperforming the individual copper nanoparticles, organic molybdenum, and their mixtures. The remarkable results are attributed to the distinctive structure of CMS, which decomposed during the friction process, forming a continuous friction film containing copper, molybdenum, and iron compounds.

Reducing electrochemical polarization is an efficient strategy to promote electrochemical reaction and increase battery performance. Herein, we develop a magnetic tuning strategy and investigate the influence of the electromagnetic properties of NiCo 2 O 4 on polarization and redox kinetics of Li-S battery. The electromagnetic properties of NiCo 2 O 4 are adjusted by controlling the nanowire dimension and crystalline size, where a series of relationships between electromagnetism and polysulfide conversion reactions are established. The built-in magnetic field in ferromagnetic NiCo 2 O 4 nanowire modulates the surface reactivity and diffusion pathway of negative species at the electrolyte/cathode interface for strong adsorption of LiPSs during cycles. The high dielectric properties of carbon cloth-supported NiCo 2 O 4 nanowire composite (NCO-CC) improve charge carriers/ions mobility and regulate the voltage at the electrolyte/cathode interface, enhancing the electrochemical performance of the battery. The optimized NiCo 2 O 4 -CC-based Li-S battery exhibits excellent initial specific capacity (1496.1 mAh g -1 at 0.1 C), high-rate capability (896.8 mAh g -1 at 1 C), and outstanding cycling stability (a decay of 0.019%/cycle after 1200 cycles at 1 C). A high areal capacity (10.4 mAh cm -2 at 0.1 C) is achieved at high sulfur loading (10.7 mg cm -2 ). This work provides new insights for tuning the magnetic properties of the cathode material to reduce polarization, mitigate polysulfide migration, and enhance the overall electrochemical performance of Li-S batteries.

The main obstacles that hinder the development of efficient lithium sulfur (Li–S) batteries are the polysulfide shuttling effect in sulfur cathode and the uncontrollable growth of dendritic Li in the anode. An all-purpose flexible electrode that can be used both in sulfur cathode and Li metal anode is reported, and its application in wearable and portable storage electronic devices is demonstrated. The flexible electrode consists of a bimetallic CoNi nanoparticle-embedded porous conductive scaffold with multiple Co/Ni-N active sites (CoNi@PNCFs). Both experimental and theoretical analysis show that, when used as the cathode, the CoNi and Co/Ni-N active sites implanted on the porous CoNi@PNCFs significantly promote chemical immobilization toward soluble lithium polysulfides and their rapid conversion into insoluble Li 2 S, and therefore effectively mitigates the polysulfide shuttling effect. Additionally, a 3D matrix constructed with porous carbonous skeleton and multiple active centers successfully induces homogenous Li growth, realizing a dendrite-free Li metal anode. A Li–S battery assembled with S/CoNi@PNCFs cathode and Li/CoNi@PNCFs anode exhibits a high reversible specific capacity of 785 mAh g −1 and long cycle performance at 5 C (capacity fading rate of 0.016% over 1500 cycles).

Photocatalytic synthesis of hydrogen peroxide is an emerging topic for solar-to-chemical energy conversion. ZnIn 2 S 4 /Bi 4 Ti 3 O 12 (ZIS/BTO) - based S-scheme heterojunction semiconductor photocatalysts were prepared via a one-pot water bath method. Under visible light irradiation, the optimum H 2 O 2 yield of ZIS/BTO-2 reaches 1102 µmol L −1 , which is 20.0 and 11.5 times higher than those of the pure phases of Bi 4 Ti 3 O 12 and ZnIn 2 S 4 , respectively. Experimental and density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrated that the Built-in Electric Field (IEF) present between the ZIS/BTO S-type heterostructures not only facilitated the transfer of photogenerated carriers to surface active sites, but also promoted the adsorption of molecular oxygen and the tuning of the energy band structure. This resulted in an enhancement of the efficiency of photocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the water oxidation reaction (WOR) for the synthesis of H 2 O 2 . Hence, the present study provided a practical route for the efficient synthesis of H 2 O 2 over Bi 4 Ti 3 O 12 - based photocatalysts and disclosed the reaction mechanism, that is, a heterojunction with a high efficiency for H 2 O 2 synthesis.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are ubiquitous in the environment and are widely used in industry and medicine, but their unspecified safety has raised concerns. This study aims to explore the potential hazards of carbon nanotubes. This study exposed different concentrations of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) to HeLa cells. The results showed that exposure to SWCNTs and MWCNTs resulted in slow growth and decreased survival of HeLa cells. The oxidative stress and autophagy of the cells were intensified, the cell division was abnormal, and the number of S-phase cells was reduced. After 100 μg/ml MWCNTs exposure, the proportion of apoptotic cells increased, and the transcript levels of apoptosis-related genes like Caspase-3 and Bcl-2 were upregulated. In addition, each group’s differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) were mainly related to the regulation of protein catabolic process, glycogen metabolic process, nucleotide synthesis and processing, response to reactive oxygen species, and regulation of cell division and apoptosis. These findings suggest that CNTs induce toxic effects through oxidative stress, exacerbating autophagy and apoptosis, and reducing cell viability. Therefore, the harmful effects of CNTs on organisms should be comprehensively considered in their production and utilization.

Flexible thermoelectric (TE) materials are promising candidates for powering wearable electronics and self-sustained microdevices. Here, we report the synthesis of S-doped Bi 2 Te 3 flexible thin films (f-TFs) on polyimide (PI) substrates via a two-step method combining physical vapor deposition and subsequent thermal diffusion. Sulfur incorporation effectively substitutes Te in the Bi 2 Te 3 lattice, leading to lattice contraction and a moderate increase in carrier concentration. Structural analyses reveal that S doping shortens the Bi–Te/S bonds and weakens interlayer van der Waals interactions, facilitating strain relaxation through nanoscale slip. As a result, the 3.8 % S-doped film achieves a peak power factor of 14.8 μW cm −1 K −2 at 300 K and exhibits moderate electrical-conductivity stability under repeated bending, with resistance variation below 10 % after 1000 cycles. These findings demonstrate that thermal diffusion-driven compositional tuning provides a practical approach to enhancing both thermoelectric performance and mechanical flexibility in Bi 2 Te 3 -based f-TFs.

Photocatalysis has emerged as a highly promising strategy to address global energy and environmental challenges. Although S-scheme heterojunctions offer a robust strategy for enhancing the migration efficiency of photo-generated charge carriers, their capability to precisely regulate the generation of reactive oxygen species for bacterial inactivation remains unclear. Here, a 2D/2D S-scheme heterojunction is constructed that enables ultrafast interfacial electron transfer and, upon introducing a polar surface, further achieves a marked enhancement in H 2 O 2 production. As a result, the catalyst exhibits markedly enhanced photocatalytic water disinfection performance, achieving a complete 7-log inactivation of E. coli within 40 min under simulated-sunlight irradiation (λ = 200–2500 nm). This work provides new insights into harnessing the potential of S-scheme heterojunctions for the precise control of ROS generation during water disinfection.

Efficient utilization of renewable biomass resources is one of the feasible approaches to address the massive consumption of fossil fuels accompanying severe resource crises and environmental pollution. Currently, 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid derived from the oxidation of biomass-based 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is a valuable chemical as the alternative to the fossil resource-derived terephthalic acid. However, the development of high-performance and low-cost Cu-based electrocatalysts for the efficient HMF oxidation reaction (HMFOR) remains an enormous challenge. Guided by our theoretical prediction, we proposed a coordination-pyrolysis strategy to fabricate highly dispersed copper sulfide (CuS) nanosheets supported on N-doped porous carbon precatalyst (CuS@NC). The covalent S species trigger the deep reconstruction of CuS nanosheets, and the in situ generated SO 4 2− not only promotes the formation of Cu 2+δ species but also facilitates the cleavage of α–C–H and –O–H bonds in HMF. The optimized CuS@NC achieved a high current density of 335 mA cm −2 at 1.50 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode, representing a remarkable 628% enhancement over the control catalyst. This study integrates theoretical predictions with experimental investigations to systematically elucidate how S species promote the deep reconstruction of CuS nanosheets to enhance the HMFOR performance and proposes a scalable strategy for preparing ultra-uniform transition metal sulfide precatalysts.

BACKGROUND Rice flatsedge ( Cyperus iria L.) is one of the most troublesome weeds infesting rice fields across China. Bensulfuron-methyl, an acetolactate synthase (ALS)-inhibiting herbicide, has been widely used for the control of Cyperaceae weeds in rice production. However, long-term and extensive use of this herbicide has resulted in the evolution of resistant C. iria populations. In this study, a suspected bensulfuron-methyl-resistant (R) population collected from a rice field that survived field-recommended applications was investigated to elucidate its resistance level and underlying mechanism. RESULTS Compared with a susceptible (S) population, the R population exhibited a high level of resistance to bensulfuron-methyl [resistance index (RI) = 12.88] and cross-resistance to metazosulfuron (RI = 11.66), bispyribac-sodium (RI = 9.10) and penoxsulam (RI = 6.35). No mutations were detected in the ALS gene, and ALS expression levels did not differ significantly between the R and S plants. Pretreatment with the cytochrome P450 inhibitor malathion and the glutathione S -transferase inhibitor 4-chloro-7-nitrobenzoxadiazole effectively reversed bensulfuron-methyl resistance in R plants. Liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry analysis showed that the R plants metabolized bensulfuron-methyl significantly faster than the S plants. RNA sequenccing analysis revealed remarkable upregulation of CYP97A3 and GSTF1 in the R population, while molecular docking indicated strong binding affinities between both enzymes and bensulfuron-methyl at their active sites. CONCLUSION These results reveal that enhanced expression of CYP97A3 and GSTF1 may contribute to bensulfuron-methyl resistance in C. iria , highlighting the role of metabolic detoxification in the evolution of non-target-site resistance in this species. © 2025 Society of Chemical Industry.

Developing efficient and durable oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts is crucial for advancing fuel cell technology and sustainable energy conversion. In this study, a scalable strategy was employed to synthesize ZIF-derived nitrogen-sulfur co-doped carbon nanosheets embedded with in situ generated ZnS and Co9S8nanoparticles. The synergistic effect of heteroatom doping and metal sulfide modification effectively modulated the electronic structure, optimized charge transfer pathways, and enhanced structural stability. The optimized catalyst exhibited a half-wave potential of 0.83 V vs. RHE, close to that of commercial 20 wt% Pt/C (0.85 V), excellent 4e−ORR selectivity, and exceptional stability, with only a ~15 mV degradation after 10,000 cycles. These results demonstrate that the combination of nitrogen sulfur co-doping and in situ metal sulfide addition pro-vides an effective approach for designing highly active and durable non-precious metal catalysts for the ORR. This synthetic concept provides practical guidance for the scalable preparation of multifunctional nanomaterial-based catalysts for electrochemical energy applications.
