Electron complementary effect of cerium tailored the electron/valence state of Mn-Ce dual-atom monolithic catalyst for enhanced Ozone catalysis

Jing-Rui Zhang,Fa-Qiang Zhong,Lu-Bing Zhong,Zheng-Jun Dong,Quan-Bao Zhao,Zhimin Ao,Darren Delai Sun,Jia-Cheng E. Yang,Yu-Ming Zheng

An unprecedented type of 3D porous millimetric ozonation catalyst confining Mn-Ce dual-atom sites in terracotta support (MCT) was hereby reported through a feasible interface oxygen-induced ordering strategy. The utilization of cerium tailored the electron/valence state of dual-atom sites through its oxyphilic 4   f orbitals, making MCT present excellent ozone catalysis to remove model recalcitrant fulvic-like acids. The TOC removal kinetics value by MCT is 2.71 and 3.68 times higher than those of catalysts confining single Mn and Ce sites, respectively. The optimized MCT exhibited robust reusability without any regeneration (above 87% of TOC removal for each cycle), and desirable removal for the biochemical effluent organics of landfill leachate, showcasing a potential of deeply purifying saline wastewater. The electron complementary effect of cerium in dual-atom sites accelerated the electron transfer for O 3 catalysis, thus promoting the formation of reactive radicals for pollutant degradation via a thermodynamically feasible surface-adsorbed oxygen pathway. This work highlights the importance of elaborately designing dual-atom metal sites to construct reusable monolithic ozonation catalysts with electron self-cycle function for advanced wastewater purification.

Accelerating the adsorption kinetics of layer-structured TiO2·H2O adsorbents for selectively separating Li+ from low-grade brines via Ce doping

Qiao Zhang,Chunxi Hai,Zhiqiang Zhu,Xuemei Zhuo,Yanxia Sun,Shengde Dong,Luxiang Ma,Xin He,Qi Xu,Yuan Zhou

The layer-structured titanium oxide lithium ion sieve (TiO 2 ·H 2 O) is regarded as one of the most promising adsorbents for recovering Li + from low-grade brines with high Mg 2+ /Li + ratios and low lithium concentrations. This is due to its exceptional theoretical lithium adsorption capacity and outstanding stability. Nevertheless, its prolonged adsorption equilibrium time, frequently in excess of 72 h, has constrained its large-scale practical application, thus confining its utilization primarily to laboratory settings. To address this challenge, we have developed a Ce-doped TiO 2 ·H 2 O adsorbent through a simple in-situ calcination method. The as-prepared adsorbents have been shown to achieve a high adsorption capacity of up to 58.42 mg/g within 10 h in a 700 ppm LiOH solution, while exhibiting a very low Ti 4+ dissolution loss rate of around 0.6 %. It is noteworthy that the Ce doping process resulted in a 14 % enhancement in adsorption capacity, accompanied by a substantial improvement in the desorption/adsorption kinetics and selectivity of the TiO 2 ·H 2 O lithium adsorbents. In summary, this study presents a novel methodology for accelerating the Li + sorption in Ti–O frameworks derived from natural brines, which provides valuable insights for enhancing the practical applicability of TiO 2 ·H 2 O.

A cerium (Ce) -based ammoniated tannin/polyvinyl alcohol hydrogel for effective and selective phosphate removal from natural water and real wastewater

Zijun Yang,Xuexue Yin,Zixuan Wang,Bing Sha,Lingzhan Miao,Jun Wu,Guoxiang You,Jun Hou

This paper presents the synthesis of a cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and highly efficient Cerium (Ce)-based polyvinyl alcohol/tannin hydrogel adsorbent modified with triethylene tetramine (Ce-PVA/TA/TETA). This material integrates components with exceptional phosphate affinity, making it ideal for phosphate removal applications . Specifically, the hydrogels were firstly prepared by using tannin and polyvinyl alcohol as raw materials. Subsequently, after H 3 BO 3 as crosslinking, the Ce was loaded into hydrogel by co-precipitation and Ce-PVA/TA was modified by triethylene tetramine amine to obtain Ce-PVA/TA/TETA with high adsorption efficiency and high selectivity. Triple modification with tannin hydrogelation, Ce loading and amination can significantly improve the affinity of the material to phosphate. This allows the Ce-PVA/TA/TETA hydrogel to maintain high phosphate adsorption capabilities across a wide pH range of 3.0–12.0. The Ce-PVA/TA/TETA hydrogel achieved a maximum phosphorus adsorption capacity of 110.88 mg/g within an equilibrium time of 120 min at 25 °C and pH = 3.0. The presence of co-existing ions had impact on phosphate adsorption. Both the pseudo-second-order model and the Langmuir model effectively described the kinetics and isotherms, respectively . The adsorption process was a monolayer chemical adsorption, which was dominated by the surface adsorption and particle internal diffusion. Besides electrostatic attraction, ligand exchange and internal diffusion mechanisms were involved in the phosphate adsorbing of Ce-PVA/TA/TETA based on Zeta potential, FTIR, and XPS analysis. Most importantly, the Ce-PVA/TA/TETA hydrogel can swiftly remove phosphate from natural water and wastewater at low doses, meeting regulatory standards. This underscores its promising potential for phosphate management and eutrophication control.

Study of the Effect of Bi and Ce Doping on the Performance of the VWTi Catalyst for Reduction of Nitrogen Oxides

Tianzhu Shao,Qi Wang,Jiahao Wei,Gonggang Sun,Xinbao Li

Graphical The study focuses on the synthesis of SCR catalysts with high activity and excellent alkali resistance. The redox performance and surface acidity of VWTi are enhanced and the atomic valencies is optimized through the doping of Ce and Bi. Therefore, the catalytic activity of the catalyst is significantly enhanced and excellent catalytic activity is maintained even after KCl poisoning. Ce-doped V 2 O 5 -WO 3 /TiO 2 (CeVWTi) and its subsequent modifications have been recognized as effective catalysts for the selective catalytic reduction of NO. Herein, CeVWTi catalysts doped with varying amounts of bismuth sulfate (Bi 2 (SO 4 ) 3 ) were synthesized and evaluated for their activity and alkali resistance. These catalysts were characterized using XPS, BET, SEM, H 2 -TPR, NH 3 -TPD, and XRD techniques. The optimal doping level of Bi 2 (SO 4 ) 3 was 1 wt.%. The NO conversion rate of the catalyst co-doped with Ce and Bi was 71.6% under the reaction conditions of 300 °C, gas hour space velocity (GHSV) = 200,000 h −1 with a gas composition of 550 ppm NO, 550 ppm NH 3 , 5.6% O 2 , and N 2 as the balance. The NO conversion efficiency of the Bi 0.01 CeVWTi catalyst was maintained at 90.7% after the addition of 1 wt.% KCl poisoning under the reaction conditions of 350 °C, GHSV = 200,000 h −1 , 550 ppm NO, 550 ppm NH 3 , 5.6% O 2 , and N 2 as the balance. Characterization showed that, despite the reduction in the specific surface area of the catalyst and some acidic sites due to Bi doping, the redox performance of Bi 0.01 CeVWTi was significantly enhanced. The excellent redox performance was maintained even after KCl poisoning.

Multifunctional ternary entropy-regulatory RE2W2O9 (RE = Ce, Gd, Ho) yellow pigments: high near-infrared reflectance, anti-ultraviolet aging, and antimycotic performance

Haiying Xin,Liyan Xue,Mengtong Ma,Ke Song,Qiyong Deng,Zhiyi Wang,Minzhong Huang,Fan Yang

To mitigate the urban heat island effect, align with the “double carbon strategy”, and address the issues of coating aging and mildew on building facades, multifunctional ternary entropy-regulatory tungstate ceramic cool pigments (Ce x Ho 0.1 Gd 1.9– x W 2 O 9+ δ ) were prepared by high-temperature solid-phase method in this study. While ensuring the high near-infrared (NIR) solar reflectance, the anti-ultraviolet (UV) aging and antimycotic performance of rare earth given to pigment were evaluated, and its optical properties, microstructure and practical application effects were deeply explored. The results indicate that ternary entropy regulation changes the color of the pigment from white to yellow, significantly reducing the band gap from 3.28 to 1.90–1.87 eV. Specifically, the Ce 0.2 Ho 0.1 Gd 1.7 W 2 O 9+ δ pigment exhibits excellent chromatic properties ( L * = 73.79, a * = 20.21 and C * = 50.51) and a high NIR solar reflectance (96.23%). Infrared thermography confirms that it has a good cooling effect, with temperatures of 3.5 °C lower than the commercially available coating of similar color. Furthermore, the performance of multifunctional integration is that the pigments show enhanced absorption in the UVA (long-wave ultraviolet 320–400 nm) range, with an increase in average light absorption from 0.19 to 0.91 and a substantial increase in antimycotic rate from 42.86% to 97.46%. At the same time, this material has good acid and alkali resistance (Δ E * ≤ 2.41). The successful development of the multifunctional cool pigment materials opens a new way to energy-saving architectural wall coating materials.

Promoting effect of Fe modification on the direct synthesis of dimethyl carbonate from CO2 and methanol over Fe-Ce binary oxide

Lei Dong,Yangyang Yuan,Shengjie Zhu,Peidong Li,Xiaomin Zhang,Yanping Chen,Lei Xu

Direct synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) using CO2 and methanol as raw materials is an environmentally friendly and promising route for recycling carbon sources from exhaust gases. Herein, well-constructed CeO2-based nanoparticle catalysts promoted by various Fe contents were synthesized via a facile co-precipitation method and demonstrated to be highly effective for direct DMC synthesis. The uniform doping of iron species in ceria lattice resulted in the formation of more surface oxygen vacancies, and thereby more coordinatively unsaturated surface metal cations and lattice oxygen anions were generated, which served as the Lewis acidic-basic sites required for the reaction. Based on in-situ DRIFTS results, it was deduced that the oxygen vacancies played a crucial role in activating CO2 to reactive bidentate carbonates and the formation of active terminal methoxy intermediates was also enhanced by Fe incorporation. Consequently, the maximum DMC yield of 3.84 mmol h-1 g-1 cat was obtained on Fe0.04Ce0.96Ox under relatively mild reaction conditions of 130 °C and 3.0 MPa. Additionally, in the tandem reaction system using 2-cyanopyridine (2-CP) as a dehydrating agent, the catalytic activity for 2-CP hydration was found to be closely associated with the total basicity of the catalysts, and in turn a higher hydration rate was more conducive to the DMC synthesis through enhancing in-situ water removal efficiency. As expected, the present work provides in-depth insights into the structure-performance relationship of Fe-modified ceria-based catalysts for direct DMC synthesis from CO2 and methanol, and offers meaningful guidance for the advancement of highly efficient catalysts.

Catalytic Ozonation of Quinoline by Prepared Fe-α-MnO2 and Ce-α-MnO2: The Role of Surface Hydroxyls and Oxygen Vacancies

Jie Zhang,Mengchen Zong,Ben Dong,Sijie Ge,Shilong He

Quinoline, as one of the typical toxic and refractory organic pollutants in coal chemical industry wastewater, poses a significant threat to human health and environmental quality. In this study, MnCexOy and MnFexOy catalysts were successfully synthesized by doping Ce3+ and Fe2+ into α-MnO2 at a molar ratio of 1∶10 and were applied to the process of catalytic ozonation for the degradation of quinoline. Additionally, a variety of characterization techniques were employed to elucidate the characteristics of the catalysts, including scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, H2-TPR, NH3-TPD. The results show that, in the catalytic ozonation system for quinoline removal, MnCexOy demonstrates excellent quinoline removal efficiency of 87.45%, which is higher than that of MnFexOy (78.83%) and unmodified α-MnO2 (62.67%). By introducing the surface hydroxyl masking agent HPO42−, the significant role of surface hydroxyl groups and oxygen vacancies in the catalytic degradation of quinoline by MnCexOy was further demonstrated. Exploring the surface characteristics of catalysts is beneficial for continued understanding of the active centers of catalysts. Research results will be helpful to the deep treatment and reuse of tailing water of coking wastewater.

Zhixian Wang,Yuntao Hu,Zhigang Zhang,Bin Wang,Gengxiu Zheng,Huaiqing Zhao

The development of synthetic methods for N-heterocyclic compounds have garnered considerable attention due to their significance in diverse chemical processes. Among various synthesis methods, the direct oxidative dehydrogenation of saturated substances to N-heteroaromatics is a simple and efficient method. This study utilized the pyrolysis of Mn/Ce-BTC MOFs precursor to prepare MnO X -CeO 2 composites as a heterogeneous catalyst for the aerobic oxidative dehydrogenation of N-heterocycles. The MnO X -CeO 2 composites were analyzed with various characterization techniques including XRD, SEM, TEM, BET, XPS, ICP-OES and Raman spectroscopy. The detailed findings from experiments indicate that the catalytic activity of the composites has been significantly improved due to the synergistic effect of MnO X -CeO 2 and the abundant oxygen vacancies on the surface of the catalyst. And the related mechanism experiments reveal that reactive oxygen species (ROS) are involved in this catalytic system. Furthermore, MnO X -CeO 2 composites retain excellent catalytic performance even after ten recycles. Graphical The synthesized bimetallic oxides MnO X -CeO 2 by the pyrolysis of Mn/Ce-BTC MOFs have been employed as a heterogenous catalyst for the oxidative dehydrogenation of N-heterocycles to N-heteroaromatics with oxygen as the solo oxidant.

Derivatization-Mediated MALDI-MSI and CE-LIF for Collaborative Analysis of Monosaccharides in Endometrial Cancer Patients: From Pathological Tissues to Serum

Jingtong Xia,Yanxia Zhang,Tao Wang,Jiaying Ran,Hongli Li,Lei Zhou,Qiaosheng Pu

Abnormal glucose metabolism has been identified as a key characteristic of tumorigenesis. Visualizing the levels of monosaccharides in the lesion tissues and bodies of cancer patients is conducive to uncovering patterns of glucose metabolic reprogramming and assisting in the early diagnosis of cancer. Consequently, based on 7-(diethylamino)coumarin-3-carbohydrazide (DCCH), which has mass spectrometry/optical dual-signal enhancement functionality, both an on-tissue derivatization strategy suitable for matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry imaging (MALDI-MSI) analysis and an in-solution derivatization strategy for capillary electrophoresis/laser-induced fluorescence (CE-LIF) analysis have been developed. During the on-tissue derivatization reaction, the nonvolatile MALDI matrix, 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid, was innovatively adopted as a proton donor. This approach not only efficiently catalyzes the derivatization process but also significantly minimizes analyte redistribution, and a low-cost airbrush application can achieve satisfying in situ derivatization. For further addressing the issue of the coexistence of multiple conformational isomers in biosamples, a rapid and efficient CE-LIF method was proposed for the separation of five DCCH-labeled monosaccharides (including three conformational isomers) within 8 min. By focusing on endometrial cancer (EC), the synergy of DCCH-mediated MALDI-MSI and CE-LIF analysis successfully achieved high-resolution in situ visualization of an obvious depletion difference in monosaccharides across the focal areas (tumor tissues, peritumoral tissues, and paracancerous tissues), and a comparative analysis was conducted on the serum monosaccharide profiles between patients with EC and those with benign uterine diseases. These analyses yielded novel molecular-level evidence, thereby facilitating a deeper understanding of the monosaccharide metabolic abnormalities associated with EC.

Synergistic Regulation of Polysulfide Shuttle and Lithium Dendrites via Ce-Doped ZIF-8 Based Separators for High-Performance Li–S Batteries

Zhenguo Wang,Tingting Chen,Zhiwen Zheng,Bocheng Su,Kangwei Wen,Lin Qin,Changqing Song,Binbin Liu,Haihong Yin

Lithium–sulfur batteries (LSBs) are regarded as a competitive candidate for future energy storage systems due to their exceptionally high theoretical capacity and energy density, but their practical use is limited by severe lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) shuttling and uncontrolled lithium dendrite growth, harming cycling stability and Coulombic efficiency. Herein, a multifunctional Ce-ZIF-8/PDA@PP separator is fabricated via in situ growth. Theoretical and experimental studies confirm it integrates synergistic functionalities from polydopamine (PDA), ZIF-8, and Ce doping. The PDA interlayer, rich in polar groups, enhances electrolyte wettability, homogenizes Li+ flux, acts as a chemical anchor and nucleation facilitator, enabling uniform Ce-ZIF-8 growth on inert PP. ZIF-8 provides uniform microporous channels for size-selective Li+ transport and LiPSs anchoring sites. Redox-active Ce3+/Ce4+ centers enable dynamic electron transfer via 4f–5d orbitals, accelerating LiPSs redox kinetics, enhancing adsorption, and regulating Li+ deposition through local electric field modulation. Consequently, symmetric cells with this separator achieve ultralong stability over 3600 h at 1 mA cm–2/1 mAh cm–2, while full cells cycle stably over 600 cycles at 1 C with 0.040% per cycle capacity decay. This study offers a robust separator strategy to concurrently address polysulfide diffusion and lithium dendrite growth in high-performance LSBs.

Rational Design of Bimetal Mn-Ce Nanosheets Anchored on Porous Nano-sized ZSM-5 Zeolite for Adsorption-Enhanced Catalytic Oxidation of Toluene

Jun Xiao,Mengmeng Wang,Yaru Wang,Xunxun Li,Jiaqin He,Yunchong Liu,Qingfeng Xu,Hua Li,Najun Li,Dongyun Chen,Jianmei Lu

Catalytic oxidation is one of the most promising methods to remove toluene; manganese-cerium catalysts have high activity in the catalytic oxidation of toluene. Herein, nano-sized ZSM-5 was synthesized using a simple hydrothermal method, and catalysts with different Mn and Ce contents were prepared via alcohol-induced redox precipitation at room temperature. In addition, zeolite provides sufficient surface area for the dispersion of manganese cerium catalysts and plays a role in concentration and enrichment in the catalytic conversion of toluene. Based on the experimental characterization results, the 20Ce/M1Z1 catalyst exhibited the best catalytic activity, achieving 90% toluene conversion at 215 °C. Moreover, the catalyst still has excellent catalytic activity in humid environments. This work provides a new strategy to expose more active sites and enhance toluene adsorption, which provides a reference for the development of more efficient catalysts in the future.

One-step facile hydrothermal synthesis of flowerlike Ce/Fe bimetallic oxides for efficient As(V) and Cr(VI) remediation: Performance and mechanism

Zhipan Wen,Jun Ke,Jinlei Xu,Sheng Guo,Yalei Zhang,Rong Chen

Toxic heavy metals As(V) and Cr(VI) removal from water environment has becoming more and more urgent due to their adverse health effect. In this study, the flowerlike Ce/Fe bimetallic oxides (CFBO), which combined the superiority of three-dimensionally (3D) hierarchical architectures and bimetallic synergistic effect, were innovatively designed and synthesized via one-step facile template-free hydrothermal method. Compared with pure iron oxides (PIO), the obtained CFBO exhibited excellent performance for As(V) and Cr(VI) removal, and the maximum adsorption capacities toward As(V) and Cr(VI) increased from 49.09 mg/g to 164.94 mg/g and 38.07 mg/g to 127.42 mg/g, respectively. Both As(V) and Cr(VI) removal efficiency decreased with an increasing solution pH due to the pH zpc of CFBO, but exhibited slightly change with coexisting anions except for SiO 3 2− and PO 4 3− ions. Combined results of FT-IR and XPS, it was concluded that the abundant hydroxyl groups existed on the surface of CFBO played a key role in the high uptake of As(V) and Cr(VI), and subsequently formed inner-sphere surface complexes. Attractively, the remarkable removal efficiency of As(V)/Cr(VI) in column experiments revealed that the CFBO had great potential for practical application.
