Comparative study on sulfamethoxazole degradation by Fenton and Fe(II)-activated persulfate process

Shizong Wang,Jianlong Wang

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are emerging contaminants, which are ubiquitous and pose the potential risk to ecosystem and human health. It is necessary to remove PPCPs from water and wastewater. In this study, sulfamethoxazole, a widely used antibiotic, was chosen as targeted pollutant. Fenton process and persulfate process were employed to remove sulfamethoxazole from aqueous solution. The results showed that Fenton process required less amount of Fe(II) and oxidant than persulfate process to achieve 100% removal of sulfamethoxazole in the water sample prepared with de-ionized water. The maximal mineralization reached 83% when hydrogen peroxide concentration was 1 mM and Fe(II) was 0.05 mM for Fenton process. The maximal mineralization for persulfate process was 60% with 4 mM of persulfate and 4 mM of Fe(II). The increase of Fe(II) concentration could increase the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide and persulfate, but did not increase the mineralization of sulfamethoxazole, indicating that the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide and persulfate was not positive correlation with the removal and mineralization of sulfamethoxazole. Five intermediate compounds were detected in Fenton process while eight intermediate compounds in persulfate process, suggesting that different degradation pathway occurred in the two processes. The wastewater components had negative effect on the degradation of sulfamethoxazole for both Fenton and persulfate processes. The removal efficiency of sulfamethoxazole was 52.5% and 52.3%, respectively, for Fenton and persulfate processes. Persulfate process could be an alternative for treating the real wastewater containing PPCPs.

Fe-N-doped carbon nanofiber and graphene modified separator for lithium-sulfur batteries

Xiong Song,Suqing Wang,Guoping Chen,Tuo Gao,Yue Bao,Liang-Xin Ding,Haihui Wang

A novel lightweight, multi-functional layer comprised of 1D porous Fe-embedded nitrogen-doped carbon nanofibers (Fe-N-C) and 2D graphene sheets is introduced to modify a commercial polypropylene (PP) separator for use in lithium-sulfur batteries. Benefiting from the high electrical conductivity and strong lithium polysulfide (LiPS) chemical adsorption ability of Fe-N-C, the porous intercalation-structured modified layer exhibits excellent ability to suppress LiPS shuttling while maintaining high lithium-ion transport, and the modified layer functions as a highly conductive upper current collector to reutilize active sulfur species. The cell assembled with the modified multifunctional separator shows a high rate capability and excellent cycling stability, exhibiting a capacity of 847.9 mAh g −1 at 2 C and a low degradation rate of 0.053% per cycle over 500 cycles at 0.5 C.

The destruction of benzene by calcium peroxide activated with Fe(II) in water

Yunfei Xue,Xiaogang Gu,Shuguang Lu,Zhouwei Miao,Mark L. Brusseau,Minhui Xu,Xiaori Fu,Xiang Zhang,Zhaofu Qiu,Qian Sui

The ability of Fe(II)-activated calcium peroxide (CaO 2 ) to remove benzene is examined with a series of batch experiments. The results showed that benzene concentrations were reduced by 20–100% within 30   min. The magnitude of removal was dependent on the CaO 2 /Fe(II)/Benzene molar ratio, with much greater destruction observed for ratios of 4/4/1 or greater. An empirical equation was developed to quantify the destruction rate dependence on reagent composition. The presence of oxidative hydroxyl radicals (HO ) and reductive radicals (primarily O 2 − ) was identified by probe compound testing and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) tests. The results of the EPR tests indicated that the application of CaO 2 /Fe(II) enabled the radical intensity to remain steady for a relatively long time. The effect of initial solution pH was also investigated, and CaO 2 /Fe(II) enabled benzene removal over a wide pH range of 3.0–9.0. The results of radical scavenging tests showed that benzene removal occurred primarily by HO oxidation in the CaO 2 /Fe(II) system, although reductive radicals also contributed. The intermediates in benzene destruction were identified to be phenol and biphenyl. The results indicate that Fe(II)-activated CaO 2 is a feasible approach for treatment of benzene in contaminated groundwater remediation.

Benzene oxidation by Fe(III)-activated percarbonate: matrix-constituent effects and degradation pathways

Xiaori Fu,Xiaogang Gu,Shuguang Lu,Virender K. Sharma,Mark L. Brusseau,Yunfei Xue,Muhammad Danish,George Y. Fu,Zhaofu Qiu,Qian Sui

Complete degradation of benzene by the Fe(III)-activated sodium percarbonate (SPC) system is demonstrated. Removal of benzene at 1.0   mM was seen within 160   min, depending on the molar ratios of SPC to Fe(III). A mechanism of benzene degradation was elaborated by free-radical probe-compound tests, free-radical scavengers tests, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis, and determination of Fe(II) and H 2 O 2 concentrations. The degradation products were also identified using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry method. The hydroxyl radical (HO ) was the leading species in charge of benzene degradation. The formation of HO was strongly dependent on the generation of the organic compound radical (R ) and superoxide anion radical (O 2 − ). Benzene degradation products included hydroxylated derivatives of benzene (phenol, hydroquinone, benzoquinone, and catechol) and aliphatic acids (oxalic and fumaric acids). The proposed degradation pathways are consistent with radical formation and identified products. The investigation of selected matrix constituents showed that the Cl − and HCO 3 − had inhibitory effects on benzene degradation. Natural organic matter (NOM) had accelerating influence in degrading benzene. The developed system was tested with groundwater samples and it was found that the Fe(III)-activated SPC has a great potential in effective remediation of benzene-contaminated groundwater while more further studies should be done for its practical application in the future because of the complex subsurface environment.

Co–Fe–Se ultrathin nanosheet-fabricated microspheres for efficient electrocatalysis of hydrogen evolution

Xiao Mingshu,Zhang Zhonghui,Tian Yanping,Miao Yuqing,Wang Jiahai

Abstract In this work, the synthesis of Co–Fe–Se ultrathin nanosheet-fabricated microspheres was reported for the first time as electrocatalysts toward hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The Co–Fe–Se ternary compounds exhibited high electrocatalytic activity of HER with low onset potential in acid media due to the high specific surface area of Co–Fe–Se ultrathin nanosheet-fabricated microspheres. The presence of multiwall carbon nanotubes improved the immobilization effect of Co–Fe–Se catalysts and electron transfer between catalysts and electrode surface, leading to the improved stability and HER electrocatalysis. The non-noble metal-based ternary compounds of Co–Fe–Se obtained from earth-abundant elements may enlighten a new way of exploring cost-effective catalysts for HER to develop hydrogen energy. Fe3C nanoparticle decorated Fe/N doped graphene for efficient oxygen reduction reaction electrocatalysis

Yanli Niu,Xiaoqin Huang,Weihua Hu

Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts with high activity, low cost and good durability are crucial to promote the large-scale practical application of fuel cells. Particularly, iron carbide (Fe 3 C) supported on nitrogen-doped carbon has recently demonstrated compelling promise for ORR electrocatalysis . In this paper, we report the facile synthesis of mesoporous Fe/N-doped graphene with encapsulated Fe 3 C nanoparticles (Fe 3 C@Fe/N-graphene) and its superior ORR catalytic activity . This hybrid material was synthesized by the spontaneous oxidative polymerization of dopamine on graphene oxide (GO) sheets in the presence of iron ion , followed by thermal annealing in Argon (Ar) atmosphere. As-prepared material shows high ORR catalytic activity with overwhelming four-electron reduction pathway, long-term durability and high methanol tolerance in alkaline media . This work reports a facile method to synthesize promising ORR electrocatalysis with multiple components and hierarchical architecture, and may offer valuable insight into the underlying mechanism of Fe 3 C-boosted ORR activity of Fe/N doped carbon.

Sn promoted BaFeO3−δ catalysts for N2O decomposition: Optimization of Fe active centers

Chuande Huang,Yanyan Zhu,Xiaodong Wang,Xin Liu,Junhu Wang,Tao Zhang

A series of BaFe 1− x Sn x O 3− δ catalysts were prepared by sol-gel method and tested for N 2 O decomposition to shed light on the effect of B-site substitution on the catalytic behavior of perovskite catalysts. 119 Sn and 57 Fe Mössbauer results confirmed that the 5-fold coordinated Fe 3+ cations with one adjacent oxygen vacancy (Fe 3+ O 5 ) were the main active centers for N 2 O decomposition. Doping of Sn cations can significantly improve the percentage of Fe 3+ O 5 from 30% ( x   =   0) to 68% ( x   =   0.8). More importantly, the valence state of Fe could be gradually reduced due to weakening of Fe O bond with increasing the Sn content, which was attributed to the stronger force of Sn than Fe in Fe O Sn structure to draw the oxygen anion and expansion of unit cell volume. Such change of Fe chemical state favored the oxygen mobility of the catalyst, leading to reduction in activation energy for N 2 O decomposition from ca. 241 ( x   =   0) to 178   kJ   mol −1 ( x   =   0.8). BaFe 0.2 Sn 0.8 O 3− δ catalyst exhibited the highest intrinsic rate of 1.49   s −1 (550   °C), nearly 4 times larger than that of BaFeO 3− δ (0.43   s −1 ).

Fe@Fe2O3 promoted electrochemical mineralization of atrazine via a triazinon ring opening mechanism

Xing Ding,Shengyao Wang,Wanqiu Shen,Yi Mu,Li Wang,Hao Chen,Lizhi Zhang

In this study, an electrochemical/electro-Fenton oxidation (EC/EF) system was designed to degrade atrazine, by utilizing boron-doped diamond (BDD) and Fe@Fe 2 O 3 core-shell nanowires loaded active carbon fiber (Fe@Fe 2 O 3 /ACF) as the anode and the cathode, respectively. This EC/EF system exhibited much higher degradation rate, decholorination and mineralization efficiency of atrazine than the electrochemical (EC) and electrochemical/traditional electro-Fenton (EC/TEF) oxidation counterpart systems without Fe@Fe 2 O 3 core-shell nanowires. Active species trapping experiment revealed that Fe@Fe 2 O 3 could activate molecular oxygen to produce more OH through Fenton reaction, which favored the atrazine degradation. High performance liquid chromatography , high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry were applied to probe the decomposition and mineralization of atrazine during this novel EC/EF process, which revealed that two intermediates of triazinons (the isomerization of hydroxylated atrazine) were generated during the electrochemical/electro-Fenton oxidation of atrazine in the presence of Fe@Fe 2 O 3 core-shell nanowires. The experimental and theoretical calculation results suggested that atrazine might be degraded via a triazinon ring opening mechanism, while the presence of Fe@Fe 2 O 3 notably accelerated the decholorination process, and produced more hydroxylated products to promote the generation of trazinons and the subsequent ring cleavage as well as the final complete mineralization. This work provides a deep insight into the triazine ring opening mechanism and the design of efficient electrochemical advanced oxidation technologies (EAOTs) for persistent organic pollutant removal .

Enhanced photocatalytic phenol production from benzene on polymers with coordinatively unsaturated Fe centers

Bo Wang,Peng Li,Zongbo Xie,Zhanggao Le

The photocatalytic hydroxylation of benzene to phenol using low-cost Fe-based materials is of great significance but remains a great challenge for the conversion of benzene in an efficient manner. Here we report a novel method to construct polymeric Fe-BTC-350 with highly dispersed coordinatively unsaturated (CUS) Fe centers by a simple pyrolysis of iron benzene tricarboxylic acid (Fe-BTC) coordination polymer. The CUS Fe centers in Fe-BTC-350 function as Lewis acid sites to accept both electrons and hydroxyl radicals, thus enhancing photocatalytic phenol generation. An optimal phenol yield of 22.7 % has been achieved over optimized Fe-BTC-350 which is 2.8 times that of the Fe-BTC. No evident decay in the activity was found after 4 cycles of consecutive reactions, indicating the robust stability of the photocatalyst. It is expected that the construction of CUS transition metal centers can also be utilized for other photocatalytic radical reactions.

Degradation of tetracycline by MIL-101(Fe)/CoFe2O4 activated persulfate under visible light

Rui Guofen,Hu Zihao,Wu Huiqi,Ma Jianfeng

Composites of MIL-101(Fe)/CoFe 2 O 4 were prepared by a simple solvothermal approach and these composites were explored for tetracycline (TC) degradation by using light and persulfate (PS). MIL-101(Fe)/CoFe 2 O 4 catalyst showed superior catalytic performance when combined with photocatalysis and chemical catalysis. Experimental results suggest that the degradation efficiency reached 83% within 40 min. The TC adsorption ability of MIL-101(Fe)/CoFe 2 O 4 was tightly associated with pH, which can be interpreted through isoelectric point. Oxygen-active species, containing singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) or superoxide radicals (O· 2‾), were also generated when there was dissolved oxygen, which could decompose the TC organic contaminant in solution. To be specific, MIL-101(Fe)/CoFe 2 O 4 /PS/Vis catalytic system was capable of eliminating TC through forming h + , 1 O 2 , O· 2‾, hydroxyl radicals (·OH) and sulfate radicals (·SO 4 ‾) species. Moreover, MIL-101(Fe)/CoFe 2 O 4 composite material showed outstanding stability.

Controlled Synthesis of Preferential Facet-Exposed Fe-MOFs for Ultrasensitive Detection of Peroxides

Yuquan Wu,Da Lei,Jiawen Li,Ying Luo,Yuwan Du,Shi Zhang,Baiyi Zu,Yuhong Su,Xincun Dou

Exposing different facets on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is highly desirable to enhance the performance for various applications, however, exploiting a concise and effective approach to achieve facet-controlled synthesis of MOFs remains challenging. Here, by modulating the ratio of metal precursors to ligands, the facet-engineered iron-based MOFs (Fe-MOFs) exhibits enhanced catalytic activity for Fenton reaction are explored, and the mechanism of facet-dependent performance is revealed in detail. Fully exposed (101) and (100) facets on spindle-shaped Fe-MOFs enable rapid oxidation of colorless o -phenylenediamine (OPD) to colored products, thereby establishing a dual-mode platform for the detection of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) and triacetone triperoxide (TATP). Thus, a detection limit as low as 2.06 n m is achieved, and robust selectivity against a wide range of common substances (>16 types) is obtained, which is further improved by incorporating a deep learning architecture with an SE-VGG16 network model, enabling precise differentiation of oxidizing agents from captured images. The present strategy is expected will shine light on both the rational synthesis of nanomaterials with modulated morphologies and the exploitation of high-performance trace chemical sensors.

Facile fabrication of Fe/Fe3C@starch-derived hierarchical porous carbon for microwave absorption

Hua Wanlu,Hu Chunyan,Xie Xiaoli,Gou Guangjun

The three-dimensional (3D) porous carbon materials are helpful for forming thin, light-weight, wide effective absorption bandwidth and strong absorption intensity absorbers. However, previous methods were not environmentally friendly enough. Thus, in this work, the Fe/Fe 3 C@porous carbon was synthesized from soluble starch and Fe(NO 3 ) 3 ·9H 2 O via chemical bowling and subsequent carbonization at 700 °C with different ratios. When the ratio of starch to Fe(NO 3 ) 3 ·9H 2 O is 1:1.5, the porous carbon exhibits a strong absorption ability with minimum reflection loss ( RL min ) value of −16.64 dB at 16.78 GHz, when the thickness is 1.75 mm and the proportion of paraffin wax is 30 wt%. The synergy of well impedance matching, sufficient loss performance, and interface polarization makes 3D porous carbon materials an excellent wave absorber. This work provides a good inspiration for studying outstanding performance microwave absorption materials.
