The scalable synthesis of green chemical fuels via artificial photosynthesis represents a cornerstone strategy for buffering intermittent renewable energy and advancing global carbon neutrality. However, the practical engineering deployment of this technology is severely constrained by suboptimal solar-to-fuel conversion efficiencies at the catalytic interface. Herein, a tubular S-scheme Co 2 (OH)PO 4 @CN (CoHP@CN) heterojunction was fabricated via a pre-coordination-mediated in-situ growth strategy to facilitate solar energy harvesting. Characterizations reveal that a directional internal electric field (IEF) drives an S-scheme charge pathway, significantly reducing transfer resistance while preserving strong redox capabilities. Benefiting from these kinetic features, the heterojunction delivers exceptional solar fuel production performance, achieving a CO yield of 383.40 μmol g −1 (over 4 h) and H 2 evolution of 4657.40 μmol g −1 (within 2 h). This study underscores the power of precise interface engineering in modulating charge dynamics, offering practical insights for scalable solar-to-chemical energy storage and renewable energy deployment.

Periodic trends in elemental properties provide a fundamental framework for understanding catalytic behavior, yet their role in photocatalysis remains largely unexplored at the orbital-interaction level. Here, a systematic series of alkaline earth metal (Mg, Ca, Sr, and Ba)-doped graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) photocatalysts is developed to reveal how periodic electronic characteristics govern photocatalytic performance. Despite the similar chemical nature of the dopants, both H 2 evolution and H 2 O 2 production exhibit a pronounced volcano-type dependence along the Mg-Ca-Sr-Ba sequence under visible light, with Sr-doped g-C 3 N 4 delivering the optimal performance (329.86 μmol g −1 h −1 for H 2 evolution and 1363.58 μmol g −1 h −1 for H 2 O 2 production). This periodic behavior originates from an orbital-synergy mechanism between the outermost p orbitals of alkaline earth metals and the intrinsic C/N 2 p electronic states of g-C 3 N 4 . Moderate p -orbital reactivity enables enhanced π-conjugation, improved charge delocalization, and reduced kinetic barriers for key reaction intermediates, whereas excessive orbital perturbation disrupts electronic balance and deteriorates catalytic efficiency. These findings establish a periodic orbital-regulation principle governing volcano-type photocatalysis and provide a general design framework linking elemental periodicity with semiconductor catalyst optimization.

The development of efficient, stable, and sustainably fabricated photocatalysts for solar-driven hydrogen evolution remains a critical challenge in the field. Herein, we report a novel green coprecipitation strategy to synthesize calcium-doped zinc oxide (Ca-ZnO) nanosheets, utilizing cactus juice as a natural, multifunctional medium for the coprecipitation process. This method enables the in situ, tunable incorporation of 3–7% Ca2+ions into the wurtzite ZnO lattice without the use of harsh chemical reagents. Comprehensive characterization confirms that Ca2+substitutionally replaces Zn2+, which preserves the intrinsic crystal structure of ZnO well while inducing the formation of uniform nanosheet morphology. This doping strategy effectively modulates the electronic band structure, progressively narrowing the bandgap from 3.19 eV to 2.90 eV and significantly enhancing visible-light absorption. Crucially, the incorporation of Ca2+also generates oxygen vacancies, which serve as efficient electron traps to suppress photogenerated charge carrier recombination. The optimized 5%Ca-ZnO photocatalyst demonstrates a favorable hydrogen evolution rate of 889 μmol·g−1·h−1under full-spectrum irradiation, with stability, retaining 94.8% of its activity after four cycles. This work not only provides a high-performance material but also establishes a generalizable, sustainable paradigm for the design of advanced semiconductor photocatalysts.

Catalytic decomposition of CH 4 is expected to yield pure hydrogen and carbon, which is important for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Nickel-based catalyst are currently the most common catalyst for methane cracking but sintering and carbon accumulation can cause catalyst deactivation. Therefore, stabilizing the particle size of nickel-based catalysts by enhancing the metal-support interaction is crucial for designing methane cracking catalysts. In this study, the effect of added Cr and Cu on the performance of NiAl catalyst was studied. The results indicated that the co-doping of Cu and Cr improved the metal-support interaction and promoted the formation of oxygen vacancies. Cu doped NiAl catalyst increased the Ni–Ni bond length and decreased the coordination of Ni–Ni by alloying with Ni. This effectively stabilized the catalyst size during the CH 4 cracking reaction. It was showed that the smaller the variation in particle size of the catalyst during the reaction, the higher the stability of methane decomposition. The Ni 2.4 Cu 0.3 Cr 0.3 Al catalysts retained 60 % hydrogen yield for up to 630 min at 600 °C. By coupling “hydrogen preparation” and “carbon production”, this paper is expected to open up a new path for the integration of clean energy production and advanced carbon materials manufacturing in a resource-efficient and environmentally friendly way.

Efficient catalytic ethanolysis and gasification of kraft lignin were conducted over a versatile supported catalyst Rh/La 2 O 3 /CeO 2 –ZrO 2 to give high-value aromatic alcohols and H 2 -rich gas. The removal of phenolic hydroxyl group was the most prevalent reaction, and importantly, almost no phenols, undesired char and saturating the aromatic ring were detected. Meanwhile, the feedstock and solvent both played key roles in H 2 generation that contributed to the hydrodeoxygenation of liquid components and made the whole catalytic process out of H 2 supply. Reusability tests of catalyst indicated that the crystalline phase transition and agglomeration of support, the loss of noble metal Rh and carbon deposition were the possible reasons for its deactivation in supercritical ethanol. Comparing with water, methanol and isopropanol system, ethanol was the only effective solvent for the depolymerization process.

The use of colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs), especially those with a core/shell structure, for photocatalytic hydrogen (H2) production from water is currently one of the hottest research fields. Although the ligand on the semiconductor NC surface is crucial to the optical and optoelectronic properties of the NC, the study of the ligand effect on the photocatalytic activity of H2 generation is rarely reported. Herein, we employ nearly monodispersed CdSe/CdS core/shell NCs as a model photocatalytic system, and three kinds of ligands with different numbers of functional thiol groups (i.e., poly(acrylic acid), 3-mercaptopropionic acid and 2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid) are selected as the ligands to investigate the effect of ligand on the efficiency of H2 photogeneration. The results show that the H2 photogeneration efficiency is highly dependent on the surface ligand of the NCs, and it increases with the increase of the number of the functional thiol groups in the ligand, and correspondingly, the photoluminescence intensity and average fluorescence lifetime, which are measured by steady state and time-resolved fluorescence measurements, are decreased. The surface trap-related charge separation efficiency, which is mediated by surface coating with different ligands, is supposed to cause the distinct ligand-dependent performance in the H2 evolution.

Infected diabetic wounds have become a major global health threat due to their complex conditions, making them difficult to heal. Herein, a coaxial fibrous dressing capable of sequential release of nitric oxide (NO) and molecular hydrogen (H2) was designed for the treatment of infected diabetic wounds. The outer layer of the coaxial fibers was physically loaded with the NO donor, enabling the first stage of rapid and high-level NO release (over 170 μM). The released NO contributed to the antibacterial function of the dressing (in vitro antibacterial assays demonstrated eradication rates of 99.99% and 99.04% against S. aureus and E. coli, respectively), thus facilitating accelerated transition of the wound through the inflammatory phase. The inner layer of coaxial fibers becomes progressively exposed following structural disintegration, enabling the hydrolysis of encapsulated H2 donor to achieve on-demand release of H2 under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation. The released H2 could promote wound healing through reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging and macrophage M2 polarization, as validated by in vitro cell assessments. In vivo infected full-thickness skin defect model in diabetic mice demonstrated that the NO/H2 sequential release coaxial fibrous dressing significantly accelerated healing of infected wounds through rapid bactericidal action via substantial NO release, followed by further sequential H2 release promoting repairing and regeneration. This temporally sequential delivery of antibacterial and healing-promoting functions significantly accelerated the healing of infected diabetic wounds.

It is known that a considerable amount of tar is usually generated in the biomass gasification process, and catalytic steam reforming is an effective method to remove this by-product. The coupling of in-situ CO 2 capture in the process can further shift the forward reforming reaction and produce hydrogen with a high purity. In this work, sorption enhanced steam reforming (SESR) of toluene (as a model compound of biomass tar) was investigated thermodynamically and experimentally using the mechanically mixed Ni/perovskite catalyst and CaO sorbent. It is verified that the appropriate temperature is 650 °C under stoichiometric reaction (S/C = 2), and around 75% average H 2 yield with a maximum H 2 purity over 95% could be obtained. Moreover, the cyclic SESR-regeneration and characterization including XRD, SEM/EDS, TEM and XPS were carried out, and it shows a stable catalytic performance and compatibility of the Ni/perovskite catalyst in the SESR process for high-purity hydrogen production.

Two-dimensional (2D) layered nanocomposite provides a surface-to-surface heterojunction, which is an effective way to improve the photocatalytic performance because larger contact areas can promote the separation rate of interfacial charge carriers. In this study, Co(OH)2/g-C3N4/Ni(OH)2 2D layered photocatalysts have been successfully synthesized through a simple precipitation–hydrothermal method. The composite achieves a high H2-production rate of 899 μmol·h–1·g–1, which exceeds the rate of samples only coupled with Co(OH)2 and Ni(OH)2 by 4.0 and 1.9 times, respectively. In addition, the activity is even higher than that of the optimized Pt-g-C3N4 sample (1 wt. % Pt–C). The characterization results reveal the close contact of g-C3N4 and Ni/Co hydroxides, and such a face-to-face contact can greatly improve the interfacial charge-transfer rate, resulting in a high photocatalytic performance. This work demonstrates a simple way to enhance the photocatalytic H2 production of g-C3N4 under the cooperative effect of Co(OH)2 and Ni(OH)2 and provides novel insights into constructing other 2D ternary heterostructure nanocomposites.

Engineering lattice defects in two-dimensional (2D) sulfide semiconductors has been accepted as an effective strategy to enhance the efficiency of the solar-to-fuels conversion. Although many researches have proven the lattice defect-mediated photocatalytic activity of ZnIn 2 S 4 , the artificial control of S-defects for optimizing the charge-carrier kinetics process in ZnIn 2 S 4 has long been a challenging task. Herein, we report a facile one-step method to modulate the lattice S-content of ZnIn 2 S 4 microflowers (MFs) only through adjusting the used amount of S-precursor in the hydrothermal solution that contains the metal precursors with a fixed Zn/In stoichiometric ratio at 1:2. We also demonstrated that the S-vacancies at the In facets were the main type of lattice defects in the formed ZnIn 2 S 4 MFs, which could enhance both the separation and migration processes of the photoinduced charge-carriers due to the existence of discrete defect energy-levels (DELs) and the reduced effective mass of electrons, as evidenced by the first-principles calculations and the electron spectra analyses. The ZnIn 2 S 4 MFs with the optimal content of S-vacancy obtained by a hydrothermal treatment of the precursors with the Zn/In/S stoichiometric ratio of 1:2:8 possessed the long-lived photoinduced electron (~94.64 ns) for contributing to the photo-physical and -chemical processes. Thus, upon visible light irradiation, the H 2 -evolution rate of this sample reached ~ 2.40 mmol h −1 g −1 with an apparent quantum efficiency of ~ 0.16% at 420 nm even though only using 5 mg of photocatalysts without any cocatalysts .

The high-temperature proton ceramic membranes with simultaneous separation of hydrogen and oxygen exhibit promising applications in the catalytic conversion field. However, their separation performance often relies on external electrical circuits, which limits practical application. To overcome this limitation, doping strategies have emerged as a viable approach to develop triple-conducting (H+/e−/O2−) membranes for simultaneous hydrogen and oxygen separation in non-electrochemical mode. In this study, honeycomb-structured hollow fiber membranes were fabricated, and the effects of varying Fe3+and Y3+doping concentrations on hydrogen and oxygen permeation fluxes were systematically investigated. At the Fe3+doping level of 0.2 mol, the oxygen permeation flux of 0.692 mL min−1cm−2in BaCe0.6Zr0.2Fe0.2O3−δ(BCZF) was achieved at 1000 °C, while the hydrogen permeation flux was 0.201 mL min−1cm−2. The BaCe0.55Fe0.05Zr0.2Y0.2O3−δ(Fe-BCZY) hollow fiber membrane can enhance the hydrogen permeation flux by 75% at 1000 °C. Furthermore, during the simultaneous permeation of hydrogen and oxygen, a 1.7-fold enhancement in hydrogen permeation performance was achieved for the Fe-BZCY hollow fiber membrane at 1000 °C, and with oxygen permeation flux of 1.76 mL min−1cm−2at the same temperature. More significantly, a hydrogen permeation flux of 0.34 mL min−1cm−2can be achieved at 700 °C under simultaneous hydrogen and oxygen permeation, which is favorable for the application of membrane reactors in catalytic reactions.

CuO-ZnO is a key catalyst widely used in catalytic processes such as dehydrogenation and hydrogenation. Hence, revealing the impact of H2O and H2 on the stability of CuO-ZnO catalysts is of critical importance. In this work, a CuO-ZnO/SiO2 catalyst with highly dispersed CuO-ZnO interface active sites was synthesized, and the structure-activity relationship and deactivation mechanism were systematically investigated using a model reaction (the cyclodehydrogenation of 1-amino-2-propanol to 2,5-dimethylpyrazine) that simultaneously generates H2O and H2. Under optimized reaction conditions (250 °C, space velocity: 1.5 h-1, and N2 flow rate: 8 mL/min), a 2,5-dimethylpyrazine yield of 68.1% was achieved over the 20%CuO-ZnO/SiO2-3:2 catalyst. The investigation into the deactivation mechanism reveals that Cu species agglomeration and carbon deposition are the primary reasons for the decline in activity. The roles of H2 and H2O in catalyst stability were found to be different: H2 suppressed the aggregation of metallic Cu0, while H2O enhanced stability by suppressing the formation of carbon deposits. Based on the understanding of the deactivation mechanism, catalyst regeneration was performed through air calcination, recovering the 2,5-dimethylpyrazine yield to 88.1% of the initial value. Overall, this work reveals the deactivation pathways and stabilization mechanisms of CuO-ZnO/SiO2 catalysts under reactive atmospheres containing H2 and H2O, offering theoretical guidance for industrial application and design of a highly stable CuO-ZnO catalyst.
