Cleaner, lower carbon energy is needed for more sustainable development. Algal production of hydrogen directly from water and sunlight is a promising route toward such sustainable energy. However, algae can only produce hydrogen continuously in weak light. We developed a hybrid system using a designed thermosensitive material, poly( N -isopropylacrylamide)- co -poly(butyl acrylate) (PNIPAM-BA), and a photothermal material, graphene oxide (GO), to dynamically sense light intensity. This system regulates the entry of incident light to protect the activity of algal hydrogenase, which enables algae to efficiently produce hydrogen through photosynthesis across a range of light intensities (100–2000 μmol photons·m –2 ·s –1 ). Even under the standard maximum solar intensity of 2000 μmol photons·m –2 ·s –1 , we achieved continuous hydrogen production over 25 days with an average hydrogen production rate of 17.53 μmol H 2 (mg chlorophyll) –1 h –1 . Thus, this study addresses the challenge of continuous hydrogen production by algae under high light intensity, greatly advancing prospects for large-scale outdoor hydrogen production.

The development of low-cost and highly efficient thermal neutron detection materials to substitute the rare and expensive 3He gas is important for the area. Lithium-based glass (Li glass) is a promising candidate due to its simple fabrication process and low cost. This paper reports the optical properties and scintillation performance of a new Ce3+-doped Li glass, whose luminescence efficiency is significantly enhanced with a light yield of about 4770 ph/MeV, which is about 54% of that of BGO crystal, and the energy resolution is 14.5% for 662 keV gamma rays. The Ce3+-doped Li glass showed a high light yield of about 7058 ph/neutron, which is about 1.18 times that of the reference GS20 glass. The Ce3+ doped Li glass exhibits stronger gamma rays suppression capability compared to GS20 glass samples. Further optimizing the Ce3+ concentration and 6Li content is expected to achieve much superior neutron detection efficiency, positioning it as a promising alternative to 3He gas for efficient thermal neutron detection.

As a type of functional group, azo-derivatives are commonly used to synthesize responsive materials. Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), prepared by acid hydrolysis of cotton, were dewatered and reacted with 2-bromoisobuturyl bromide to form a macro-initiator, which grafted 6-[4-(4-methoxyphenyl-azo) phenoxy] hexyl methacrylate (MMAZO) via atom transfer radical polymerization. The successful grafting was supported by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and Solid magnetic resonance carbon spectrum (MAS13C-NMR). The morphology and surface composition of the poly{6-[4-(4-methoxyphenylazo) phenoxy] hexyl methacrylate} (PMMAZO)-grafted CNCs were confirmed with Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The grafting rate on the macro-initiator of CNCs was over 870%, and the polydispersities of branched polymers were narrow. The crystal structure of CNCs did not change after grafting, as determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The polymer PMMAZO improved the thermal stability of cellulose nanocrystals, as shown by thermogravimetry analysis (TGA). Then the PMMAZO-grafted CNCs were mixed with polyurethane and casted to form a composite film. The film showed a significant light and pH response, which may be suitable for visual acid-alkali measurement and reversible optical storage. Keywords:cellulose nanocrystals;azo-derivatives;atom transfer radical polymerization;light- and pH-responsive

Photocatalyzed polymerization using organic molecules as catalysts has attracted broad interest because of its easy operation in ambient environments and low toxicity compared with metallic catalysts. In this work, we reported that 4,7-di(thiophen-2-yl)benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole (DTBT) can act as an efficient photoredox catalyst for photoinduced electron transfer-reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (PET-RAFT) polymerization under green light irradiation. Well-defined (co)polymers can be obtained using this technique without any additional additives like noble metals and electron donors or acceptors. The living characteristics of polymerization were verified by kinetic study and the narrow dispersity (Đ) of the produced polymer. Excellent chain-end fidelity was demonstrated through chain extension as well. In addition, this technique showed great potential for various RAFT agents and monomers including acrylates and acrylamides. Keywords:organic photoredox catalyst;green light;PET-RAFT polymerization

The COVID-19 pandemic revealed key limitations in conventional qPCR diagnostics, including lengthy multi-step nucleic acid extraction and dependence on trained personnel. In this study, photoactive TiO 2 @Ga particles are developed capable of rapid viral lysis, nucleic acid extraction, and directional enrichment. Liquid metal gallium (Ga) enhances viral lysis under ultrasound by amplifying acoustic effects and generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) in aqueous environments. TiO 2 provides photocatalytic propulsion under UV irradiation and exhibits high affinity for nucleic acids, enabling efficient capture. Upon UV exposure, protons are generated by water oxidation at TiO 2 and reduced at Ga. The resulting proton flux drives the migration of negatively charged particles toward the TiO 2 side. The particles reached velocities of up to 6 µm s −1 under 365 nm UV light at an intensity of 200 mW cm −2 . Under the same conditions, TiO 2 @Ga particles exhibited lower qPCR cycle threshold (Ct) values compared with controls, indicating enhanced viral lysis and nucleic acid capture of SARS-CoV-2 plasmids and pseudoviruses. Furthermore, qPCR confirmed efficient extraction and transport of viral nucleic acids within a single-channel microfluidic chip. This integrated, rapid, and user-friendly approach holds strong potential for point-of-care molecular diagnostics.

A rapid and efficient detection method to detect the total starch in tobacco leaves using smartphone-based anthrone-sulfuric acid colorimetry is established under the framework of the low-cost, immediate, general-purpose, and high-throughput (LIGHt) smartphone-based colorimetry. The LIGHt smartphone colorimetry resulted average relative error of 5.74%, with a relative standard deviation (RSD) ranging from 2.58 to 4.31%, a detection limit of 1.53 µg/mL, and an average recovery rate of 95.72%. The results demonstrated that the LIGHt smartphone colorimetry perform comparably to the regular visible spectrophotometry in determining starch concentration, validating the feasibility of this novel colorimetric method, which requires no specific instruments. The LIGHt-based method indicated the feasibility and potential for application in the field of rapid quality detection of plant leaves and other food and medicinal-related quality control practices.

Background The exploration of efficient and stable transition metal-based co-catalysts is of great importance for the large-scale hydrogen production by photocatalytic water splitting. Methods Herein, a rod-shaped nitrogen-doped carbon (NC)-supported cubic molybdenum carbide (α-MoC) ( i.e. MoC/NC) was explored to decorate CdS, thus forming MoC/NC@CdS to enhance its photocatalytic hydrogen generation under visible light irradiation (≥400 nm), in which MoC/NC derived from the in-situ carbonization of the complex of phosphomolybdic acid (PMo 12 ) and Zr(IV) porphyrinic metal-organic framework (MOF-545) under inert atmosphere. Significant findings Due to the intrinsic hydrogen reduction activity of MoC and its improved electron structure by the NC layer, the accelerated photogenerated electron transfer of CdS to MoC by the MoC/CdS Schottky junction and the good conductivity of NC layer, as well as the resulting acceleration of carrier separation, MoC/NC@CdS exhibits outstanding photocatalytic hydrogen generation performance, achieving 32.14 mmol g⁻¹ h⁻¹ of H 2 production rate, which was a 9.43-fold increase relative to that of pristine CdS. And the apparent quantum yield (AQY) at 420 nm was up to 1.77 %. Moreover, MoC/NC significantly mitigates the photocorrosion effect of CdS, therefore enhancing its duration.

Near-infrared (NIR) light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are potential devices that could become the core components in biological imaging, security monitoring, etc., which are currently constrained by suboptimal luminous efficiency due to the absence of excellent luminescent materials. Here, we report a double perovskite Cs2NaInCl6 that is suitable for Cr3+ doping and exhibits broad NIR emission. Through direct absorption and energy transfer (ET) from the self-trapped excitons (STEs) induced in the Cs2NaInCl6 matrix, Cr3+ can be excited to 4T1(P), 4T1(F), and 4T2(F) levels. Then, the broad emission with a full width at half-maximum (FWHM) of ∼150 nm, spanning 800 to 1300 nm, and a high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of up to 70% can be realized, resulting from the 4T2→4A2 transition of Cr3+. Subsequently, the introduction of Yb3+ endows Cs2NaInCl6:Cr3+,Yb3+ with a higher PLQY of 76% at the optimal doping ratio than Cs2NaInCl6:Cr3+. Ultimately, a miniaturized NIR LED device packaged based on Cs2NaInCl6:15%Cr3+,15%Yb3+ has been fabricated, which demonstrates superior performance for night vision, traceless perspective detection, and biological imaging. This work not only screens out a suitable Cs2NaInCl6 matrix for Cr3+ doping with high PLQY but also promotes its luminescence performance through Yb3+ doping for NIR LED applications.

Luminescent organic materials play an indispensable role in various aspects of human life and modern society; however, their photophysical processes in the aggregated state remain inadequately understood. Here, we introduce an experimental scheme to monitor in situ the evolution of charge density and noncovalent interactions in aggregated molecules under dark conditions and 360 nm laser irradiation. Application to 9,10-diphenylanthracene (DPA) crystals reveals an unexpected light-induced molecular shift and rotation. Topological analysis of the in situ charge density indicates that the overall molecular shift within DPA crystals strengthens intermolecular C–H···π interactions while weakening π···π interactions. Moreover, significant rotation of the phenyls occurs upon light exposure, resulting in a change in the dihedral angle between their plane and the anthracene core from 66.621 to 66.344°, which enhances the intramolecular conjugation across the entire molecule. This structural evolution leads to a reduction in excitation energy and an increase in the radiative transition rate, as demonstrated by theoretical calculations, ultimately resulting in the observation of strong emission. The motion-induced enhancement mechanism uncovered in this study addresses the long-standing debate surrounding photophysical processes in traditional luminescent aggregates, providing a foundation for the development of novel luminescent materials with improved performance and versatility.

This study presented the successful synthesis of a visible light responsive Z-scheme BiTmDySbO7/BiEuO3heterojunction photocatalyst (BBHP) via the hydrothermal method, exhibiting outstanding removal efficiency for degrading the metronidazole (MNZ) in wastewater. The BBHP exhibited exceptional photocatalytic activity during the degradation process of the MNZ which was a widely detected pharmaceutical pollutant in aquatic environments. The key to the high photocatalytic activity of the BBHP was the formation of a Z-scheme photogenerated carrier transport channel which existed between BiTmDySbO7and BiEuO3within the heterojunction structure. This innovative structural design was experimentally confirmed for enhancing the separation efficiency of the photogenerated charge carriers significantly, thereby, the efficient photocatalytic activity of the BBHP was promoted. After visible light irradiation for 130 min, the BBHP achieved a removal efficiency of 99.56% for degrading MNZ and a mineralization rate of 98.11% for removing the total organic carbon (TOC) concentration. In contrast to a single photocatalyst, the removal rate of the MNZ by using the BBHP was 1.14 times that by using the BiEuO3, 1.26 times that by using the BiTmDySbO7, and 2.65 times that by using the nitrogen-doped TiO2(N-T) under visible light irradiation. The mineralization rate for removing the TOC concentration during the degradation process of the MNZ by using the BBHP was 1.17 times that by using the BiEuO3, 1.29 times that by using the BiTmDySbO7, and 2.86 times that by using the N-T under visible light irradiation. The photocatalytic degradation process of the MNZ by using the BBHP followed first-order kinetics model, concurrently, a dynamics rate constant of 0.0345 min−1was obtained. Furthermore, the BBHP demonstrated excellent stability and durability in accordance with multiple cyclic degradation experiments. According to the capturing radicals experiments and the electron paramagnetic resonance test experiments, it was determined that the hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and the superoxide anions (•O2−) played key role during the photocatalytic degradation process of the MNZ by using the BBHP under visible light irradiation. Finally, the intermediate products that were produced during the degradation process of the MNZ were analyzed by using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometer, as a result, a potential degradation pathway for the MNZ was proposed. Overall, this study could provide valuable references for future research on composite photocatalysts and effectively maintain the safety and sustainable utilization of water resource.

LED-based near-infrared (NIR) light sources are of considerable interest for advanced NIR spectroscopy technologies. However, LED "efficiency droop" presents a major challenge to achieving high-brightness NIR light. In this study, LaMgGa 11 O 19 :Cr 3+ (LMG:Cr 3+ ) ceramic was developed as a NIR color converter to achieve high-brightness laser-driven NIR light. The effects of fabrication temperature and Cr 3+ doping concentration on the luminescent properties of LMG:Cr 3+ ceramics were thoroughly investigated. Under blue light excitation, LMG:Cr 3+ ceramic exhibits a broadband NIR emission peak at 730 nm, with a high external quantum efficiency of 55.4 %. Due to its excellent heat dissipation performance and high-temperature stability, LMG:Cr 3+ ceramic can generate high-brightness NIR light, achieving an output power of 1.2 W when excited by a blue laser with power density of 7.50 W mm −2 . Finally, a laser-driven NIR light source has been successfully packaged, demonstrating the capability to meet various intelligent spectroscopy applications in biomedical imaging and non-destructive detection.

PZT-8 ceramics exhibit outstanding performance in sensor applications owing to their superior piezoelectric properties. Nevertheless, conventional dense PZT-8 ceramics are subject to certain limitations, including high acoustic impedance and relatively low energy conversion efficiency, which restrict their broader application potential. Porous architectures offer a viable solution by enabling controlled porosity, thereby improving acoustic matching and enhancing energy harvesting efficiency. Although 3D printing presents a cost-effective method for fabricating complex ceramic geometries, ultraviolet (UV) light-based photopolymerization techniques have encountered challenges in processing PZT-8 ceramics due to their strong UV absorption characteristics. To address this limitation, this study introduces a novel strategy by incorporating non-absorbent polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) into the formulation of high-performance porous PZT-8 piezoelectric ceramics tailored for digital light processing (DLP)-based 3D printing. Systematic investigations demonstrate that increasing PMMA content (5 wt% to 25 wt%) positively influences curing depth while simultaneously affecting microstructure and electrical properties. The experimental results show d 33 values ranging from 176 to 272 pC/N, k t values from 35.84% to 46.55%, Z values from 18.13 to 22.22 MRayls, FOM values from 8.92 to 10.55 × 10 -12 m 2 /N, and HFOM values from 3.47 to 4.40 × 10 -12 m 2 /N.
