In this study, to achieve excellent impermeability and thermal storage performance of metal-organic framework (MOF) based composite phase change materials (PCM), an encapsulation method was prepared by utilizing unsaturated metal sites of MOF, and the PCM composite SA@MOFs@SiO 2 were prepared. Stearic acid is adsorbed into the MOF pores through adsorption before encapsulation. To achieve high impermeability, the unsaturated metal site of MOFs forms a coordination Me-SH bond with 3-mercaptopropyltriethoxysilane (KH590), then dense silica was formed on PCM surface through the hydrolysis condensation reaction of both KH590 and triethoxysilane (TEOS). The heat storage of SA@MIL-101(Cr)-NH 2 @(Cr)-S-Si@SiO 2 composite can reach 113.89 J/g, and the melting permeability was as low as 0.69 %, exceptional chemical stability can be obtained at 70 °C for 10 days. This work provides a general method for designing a variety of MOF-based phase-change composites with superior impermeability, demonstrated by three different MOFs derived PCMs. These will be promising materials in the fields of textiles, architecture, solar energy applications , and etc.

The efficient elimination of recalcitrant synthetic dyes from complex waters remains a pressing challenge for advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). Herein, an Fe-MOFs-derives@BC composite was fabricated by anchoring MIL-101(Fe) crystals onto rice-straw biochar followed by high-temperature carbonization. XRD, SEM and XPS confirm the formation of a crystal–amorphous hybrid in which residual MIL-101(Fe) nanocrystallites are embedded within a conductive carbon matrix rich in oxygen vacancies. The composite rapidly activates PMS via a synergistic Fe(II)/Fe(III) redox cycle and carbon-facilitated electron transfer, generating SO₄• − , •OH, and 1 O₂ to driving Rhodamine B (RhB) and Malachite Green (MG) degradation. Under optimal conditions (0.1 g L −1 catalyst, 0.1 g L −1 PMS), >90% RhB and MG were removed within 15 min across deionised, groundwater, lake and river matrices; even in the most complex river water, 90% removal is achieved in 10 min. When Fe-MOFs-derives@BC is immobilised in a poly (vinylidene fluoride) membrane, a continuous-flow micro-reactor maintains >90% removal over 600 min with negligible flux decline and undetectable Fe leaching. This hybrid radical/non-radical pathway, broad matrix tolerance and long-term membrane stability position Fe MOFs-derives@BC/PMS as a robust, scalable platform for advanced wastewater treatment.

Polyurea, an environmentally friendly coating with no volatile solvents, is widely applied in construction waterproofing, marine anti-corrosion, and automotive coatings due to its excellent properties. However, its inherent flammability and release of substantial heat and toxic smoke limit its use in high-safety fields. To overcome the limitations of traditional ammonium polyphosphate (APP) flame retardants, this study introduces a biomimetic interface engineering strategy inspired by the rough structures of natural pollen. A multilayered core-shell APP@MOF@MoS 2 composite was constructed by sequential deposition of CoZn-MOF and hydrothermal growth of MoS 2 on APP particles. Incorporating only 4 wt% APP@MOF@MoS 2 into polyurea significantly reduced the peak heat release rate, peak smoke production rate, total heat release, total smoke production, and peak CO 2 production by 48.05%, 51.41%, 41.58%, 64.91%, and 63.04%, respectively. The composite achieved UL-94 V-0 rating and a limiting oxygen index of 23.5%. The enhanced flame retardancy is attributed to the combined effects of MoS 2 barrier formation, phosphate radical trapping, and catalytic carbonization by Co, Zn, and Mo. Moreover, the core-shell structure and size mismatch improved compatibility and mechanical properties compared to APP alone. This work provides a new biomimetic strategy for developing polyurea composites with superior flame retardancy, smoke suppression, and mechanical performance.

In pursuit of a sustainable alternative to conventional petroleum-derived polymers, this study aims to enhance the comprehensive performance of polylactic acid (PLA). Despite its inherent biocompatibility and biodegradability, the intrinsic brittleness of PLA significantly restricts its broader applicability, particularly in the medical domain. To overcome this limitation, we utilized the Hummers method to functionalize the surface of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with carboxylic acid groups, followed by a green and highly efficient solution-mixing approach to immobilize the modified CNTs onto the surface of HKUST-1, a metal-organic framework (MOF). The resulting inorganic-organic nanocomposite, denoted as CNTₘ/HKUST-1, was uniformly integrated into a PLA matrix via a mechanical hot-pressing technique, yielding the CNTₘ/MOF-PLA composite. This composite exhibited remarkable enhancements in mechanical properties, including tensile strength, modulus, and fracture toughness, alongside improved thermal stability. Furthermore, it demonstrated exceptional antibacterial efficacy against *Staphylococcus aureus* and Escherichia coli, coupled with outstanding biocompatibility and minimal cytotoxicity. The green synthesis strategy employed herein positions the CNTₘ/MOF-PLA composite as a highly promising material for applications in tissue engineering and advanced biomedical devices.

Different concentrations of N-doped modified Zn-based metal-organic frameworks (xN-Zn-MOFs) were prepared by a solvothermal method, as well as the successful synthesis of 0N-Zn-MOFs as well as 1N-Zn-MOFs and 2N-Zn-MOFs catalytic materials. The experimental results suggested that 2N-Zn-MOF displayed the maximum specific surface area and pore size among the three materials. The catalytic material stability and CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) activity were investigated by linear sweep voltammetry (LSV), cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and chronocurrent tests (I-T). The corresponding Faraday efficiency (FE) was calculated in conjunction with product analysis. Among the three catalytic materials, 2N-Zn-MOF had the optimal catalytic reduction performance with a maximum current density of 20 mA-cm −2 ; Its charge transfer resistance was 7.84 Ω. It was stably tested at a potential of −0.45 V (vs. RHE) for 12 h in the IT test, and its reduction products were methane (CH 4 ) and carbon monoxide (CO), with a maximum total Faraday efficiency of 30.64 %.

The increasing prevalence of harmful algal blooms (HABs), specifically those resulted by toxigenic Alexandrium spp., notably threats human health and aquatic ecosystem. Metal organic frameworks (MOFs), particularly copper- and zinc-based MOFs have emerged as promising materials to control HABs. However, their application safety needs to be assessed because of poor knowledge of their ecotoxicity to marine organisms. In this study, the toxicity of Cu-MOF and Zn-MOF was evaluated to Oryzias melastigma at embryonic and adult stages. The Cu-MOF exhibited a concentration-dependent mortality and hatching rate at concentrations ≥ 2.0 mg L −1 . The Zn-MOF exhibited similar effects when the exposure doses ≥ 80 mg L −1 . Additionally, adult fish after exposure to Cu-MOF showed significant mortality rate at higher concentrations (≥ 4.0 mg L −1 ), beside elevated oxidative stress markers. In contrast, Zn-MOF did not show mortality and oxidative stress although bioaccumulation of Zn 2 + occurred in tissues. Based on the safety assessment of MOFs to marine medaka, the dosages for application of Cu-MOF (≤ 1.0 mg L −1 ) and Zn-MOF (≤ 20 mg L −1 ) are safe for controlling A. minutum -forming HABs. This study hints that the application of MOFs in mitigation of HABs should be carefully evaluated to balance their benefits in contrast to ecological risks.

While various strategies, such as introducing n-π* transitions and expanding π-conjugated systems, have been proven to effectively enhance light harvesting for metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), their practical application is often hampered by ligand structure dependency—specifically, the requirement for complex ligand synthesis. To address this limitation, this work reports an in-situ ligand hydroxylation strategy during the synthesis of Bi-based MOFs. This approach not only broadens the light absorption range of the MOFs but also circumvents environmentally unfriendly synthetic conditions (e.g., high temperature or strong oxidants). This phenomenon is first observed in BDC-(OH) 2 containing two hydroxyl groups, which is transformed to BDC-(OH) 4 with four hydroxyl groups in the final MOF, denoted as Bi-BDC-(OH) 4 , as directly seen in the single crystal structure. Furthermore, the in-situ hydroxylation process is successfully extended to other ligands, including gallic acid (GA) and quercetin (QC), demonstrating its universality. Importantly, the hydroxylation also increases the charge separation efficiency of Bi-BDC-(OH) 4 . This work provides a novel and practical strategy to enhance light utilization and improve the photocatalytic efficiency of Bi-based MOFs.

The rational design of high-performance adsorbents for lithium recovery from aqueous resources depends critically on understanding how metal doping modulates the structure and properties of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). In this work, we systematically investigate the effects of Fe doping on the lithium adsorption and isotope separation performance of Al-MOFs through controlled synthesis of bimetallic Al/Fe-MOFs with varying metal ratios (1:4 to 4:1). The materials were characterized by XRD, XPS, TGA, and adsorption experiments, complemented by density functional theory calculations. Results show that optimal Fe incorporation (Al/Fe = 2:1) significantly improves Li + adsorption capacity (24.07 mg g −1 ) and isotopic selectivity ( α = 1.033) compared to the undoped MOFs ( Q = 12.97 mg g −1 , α = 1.027). Structural analyses reveal Al/Fe-MOFs contraction (Δ d (002) = 0.36 Å) and surface charge modification (pH ZPC shift from 10.26 to 8.73), while electronic structure studies demonstrate Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ redox activity promotes electron transfer. DFT calculations identify greatly increased adsorption energetics (−3.96 eV) through synergistic Al O/Fe O interactions, where the rigid Al O framework ensures structural stability and flexible Fe O sites support dynamic adsorption. The material exhibits excellent cycling stability (92 % capacity retention) due to dual stabilization mechanisms. These findings confirm that balanced bimetallic coordination in MOFs can enhance adsorption capacity and selectivity through geometric and electronic effects, providing valuable insights for designing advanced adsorbents for lithium recovery.

Xylanase is a natural and high-efficiency catalyst for the degradation of xylan to reducing sugar. However, the catalytic performance of xylanase is greatly limited by its poor activity and stability at the harsh condition. To overcome this issue, covalent immobilization of xylanase on a magnetic porous MOFs material with core-shell structure, UIO-66-NH2 carrier was applied to improve the catalytic activity and stability of xylanase. Several tools were employed to monitor the preparation and immobilization processes, magnetic properties, and the structural/chemical characteristics of the biocatalyst. 77.9% of the activity for xylanase was retained after immobilization. Moreover, the thermal stability in terms of half-life of the immobilized enzyme was three times higher than that in free form, and which had higher catalytic efficiency for hydrolysis of xylan. Furthermore, the greater temperature and wider pH ranges of the activity stability were achieved for the immobilized xylanase in compared with free one. Notably, the biocatalyst exhibits both excellent storage stability and could be easily separated using a magnet, which is conducive for its reusability. And nearly 70% of its initial activity was retained after seven recycles during the hydrolysis of corn straw. These features indicate that the present immobilization method is promising prospect for the industrial application of enzyme.

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have recently gained attention as a highly promising category of photocatalytic materials, showing great potential in the degradation of organic dyes such as Rhodamine B (RhB). Nonetheless, the mono-metal MOF materials in this application are often constrained by their limited light absorption capabilities and their propensity for recombination with carriers. The combination of different metal-based MOFs to form heterogeneous reactors could present a promising approach for the removal of dyes from water. In this work, a new CAU-17/MIL-100(Fe) Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst composed of two MOFs with the same ligands is reported to realize the efficient degradation of dyes in water. The combination of the two MOFs results in a significant enhancement of the surface open sites, optical responsivity range, and charge-separating efficiency through synergistic effects. In addition, the capture experiments conducted on the photocatalytic process have verified that ∙O2−and h+are the primary active species. Consequently, CAU-17/MIL-100(Fe) exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity and stability. The degradation rate of the optimal CAU-17/MIL-100(Fe) photocatalyst was 34.55 times that of CAU-17 and 3.60 times that of MIL-100(Fe). Our work provides a new strategy for exploring the visible-light degradation of RhB in bimetallic MOF composites.

The recovery of gold from industrial effluents is crucial for environmental conservation, sustainable resource management, and promoting the green development of gold resources. We designed a Zr-based MOF (UKM-78) by incorporating functional organic ligands that resemble amino groups, using MOFs’ inherent sieving effect for ion separation. This novel material exhibited enhanced gold recovery under acidic conditions, with an adsorption capacity three times and an adsorption rate four times higher than those of nonfunctionalized UKM-77. Notably, UKM-78 efficiently captured gold solutions at concentrations as low as 1 ppm and achieved an adsorption rate exceeding 90%, owing to the electrostatic interactions and coordination between its functionalized groups and the synergistic effect of its porous structure. Despite multiple regeneration cycles, UKM-78 retains 99.4% of its adsorption capacity. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), kinetic studies, and thermodynamics collectively demonstrated that Au(III) binding on UKM-78 involved cooperative electrostatic interactions and chemical adsorption through coordination. This study highlights the potential of MOFs for efficient and sustainable recovery of gold from complex waste streams.

Designing and fabricating ultrafiltration membranes that possess relatively high permeability while simultaneously maintaining high rejection and improved antifouling properties continues to be a challenge. In this study, we investigated the integration of novel melamine modified Zr-based metal organic frameworks (Zr-MOFs) with nanosheets of graphene oxide (GO) and sulfonated graphene oxide (SGO). These composite materials were synthesized using the solvothermal process and subsequently coated onto the PES membrane surface using the vacuum-assisted dip-coating method. The stability enhancement of the topmost MOF composite layer adhering to the membrane surface is attributed to hydrogen bonding, π-π stacking, and van der Waals interactions. These effects are augmented by the incorporation of polar functional groups such as hydroxyl, carboxyl, sulfonate, and amine groups. The optimized composite membranes incorporating MOFs exhibit enhanced performance, with a permeability of 80.2 L/m 2 h bar, achieving a bovine serum albumin (BSA) rejection of ≥97.8 % and a humic acid (HA) rejection of 98.9 %. Moreover, a flux recovery ratio (FRR) of 89.5 %. To investigate the interactions among the incorporated components, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were employed in a computational study. The simulations validated hydrogen bond formation and reinforced prior studies, demonstrating the potential of Zr-MOF compositions as effective hydrophilic nanoparticles. The overall results indicate a substantial enhancement in membrane performance and underscore the high potential for practical applications.
