Rationally-designed N, P- codoped carbon-supported Ru as efficient catalyst for alkaline hydrogen oxidation

Nan Li,Xiaomi Xie,Mimi Zhang,Sitao Fang,Zifu Du,Loujun Gao,Lei Lv,Jianzhang Zhou,Deyin Wu,Rui Li,Xuan Jian

Developing efficient, stable and CO-tolerant electrocatalysts for alkaline hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) is vital for hydrogen fuel cells. Herein, we report a phytic acid-modified polyaniline-derived N, P-codoped porous carbon supported ruthenium catalyst (Ru/PA-Ani) for alkaline HOR. The catalyst exhibits an outstanding anodic current density of 8.97 mA cm −2 at 50 mV overpotential over 10 times higher than Ru/Ani and much better than commercial Pt/C. Mechanistic study suggested that the phosphate groups of Ru/PA-Ani catalyst establish a stable complexation system with polyaniline, and the molecular orbital distribution features of its HOMO and LUMO afford molecular-level support for the valence state modulation of Ru 3+ Meanwhile, N, P co-doping optimizes active site dispersion and electronic structure, promoting OH* generation and charge transport. This work provides an effective strategy for high-performance HOR catalysts and guides the design of low cost, stable anode catalysts for alkaline fuel cells.

NH4PF6-induced P-doping and surface restructuring: Route to superior lithium storage performance of MXene

Yunhao Wu,Yizhan Gao,Jiaxuan Li,Zhen Wang,Zhigang Shao,Juan Zhang,Jianling Li

2D layered MXene, which holds multiple outstanding properties, like large specific surface area, abundant functional groups, and ultra-high electronic conductivity, have been an attractive anode material for lithium-ion energy storage. However, its practical application is greatly hindered by its limited capacity. Aiming at addressing this problem, this article innovatively proposes to mix NH 4 PF 6 with MXene for sintering, achieving P-doping between MXene layers and the transformation of Ti O and Ti-O-P functional groups. After 1700 cycles of 150 mA g −1 , the modified material still has a high specific capacity of over 250 mAh g −1 , and after 800 cycles of 1500 mA g −1 high current, it still has a capacity retention rate of over 100%. The in-situ XRD, XPS, DFT calculations and other methods have been used to demonstrate that the uniformly distributed phosphorus rich functional groups between MXene layers significantly expand the interlayer spacing, provide more active sites for lithium-ion storage, effectively promote Li + adsorption, and improve capacity and rate performance.

Construction of p/n-type Z-scheme heterojunctions for photocatalytic CO2 reduction and water splitting

Huimin Luo,Jinming Yan,Deyun Xu,Jia Guo,Mengjie Fan,Longtian Kang,Qingfu Sun

P/N-type Z-scheme heterojunction of Co-PDI/Cu-CuTCPP is prepared by a simple way. • Multifunctional photocatalytic activity of is achieved for POE, PHE and CO 2 RR. • Catalytic activities for POE and CO 2 RR increase by ~3 and ~12 times, respectively. • The overall CO 2 RR in the aqueous phase can be achieved to yield O 2 , CO and CH 4 . • It is found that Co-O-Cu linkage exists and has important role in photocatalysis. Developing a multifunctional system for photocatalytic water splitting (PWS) and carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) is a promising approach to achieve the green carbon cycling. Here, the p/n-type Z-scheme heterojunction (Co-PDI/Cu-CuTCPP) between cobalt perylene diimide nanorods (Co-PDI) and copper porphyrin metal-organic framework nanosheets (Cu-CuTCPP NSs) is constructed via a cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)-assisted physical method. Systematical characterizations prove the existence of Co–O–Cu linkage, π-π interaction, and electrostatic forces between Co-PDI and Cu-CuTCPP. The effect of Co-PDI/Cu-CuTCPP ratio on the optical, photoelectric and electrical properties, as well as multifunctional photocatalytic activity is investigated and analyzed. Under visible light irradiation (λ > 420 nm), the Co-PDI/Cu-CuTCPP composites exhibit the photocatalytic activities of water splitting to H 2 and O 2 , as well as CO 2 RR to CO and CH 4 , respectively. After optimizing photocatalytic system, the oxygen evolution rate of 18.7 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 is reached, which is a 4.4-fold compared that of pure Co-PDI. The photogenerated electron conversion efficiency during CO 2 RR is 12.9-fold higher in Co-PDI/Cu-CuTCPP than in Cu-CuTCPP. Meanwhile, the overall CO 2 RR in the aqueous phase can be achieved without H 2 production. Mechanism studies reveal the photoelectrical conversion process, and confirm the synergistic role between Co-PDI and Cu-CuTCPP. Covalently-Bonded Interfaces Stabilizing Radially-Oriented P/Ti3C2 Microspheres for High-Performance Lithium-Ion Batteries

Huibin Guan,Li Zeng,Ziqin Wu,Weishan Tang,Xiaolong Li,Hanna He,Chuhong Zhang

Red phosphorus (P), with high theoretical specific capacity and environmental benignity, represents a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, its practical application is hindered by intrinsic limitations, such as poor electronic conductivity and substantial volume fluctuation, resulting in sluggish redox reaction kinetics and compromised reaction reversibility. Herein, we design a 3D P-bonded radially-oriented Ti 3 C 2 microsphere composite electrode (P80/MS-Ti 3 C 2 ) via an innovative electrostatic spraying technique. The unique, highly conductive, radially-oriented Ti 3 C 2 matrix uniformly and tightly encapsulates P nanoparticles within the channels, which establish continuous ion/electron pathways and prevent the aggregation of 2D Ti 3 C 2 sheets. Simultaneously, the formation of robust Ti-O-P covalent bonds at the interface significantly enhances the intrinsic electronic conductivity and alleviates the volume expansion and exfoliation of red P during cycling. The synergistic integration of stabilized covalent interfaces and meticulously-engineered architecture endow the optimized P80/MS-Ti 3 C 2 electrode with high reversible specific capacities and outstanding cycling stability, achieving 1269.5 mAh g − 1 at 500 mA g − 1 after 700 cycles and 1064.3 mAh g − 1 at 1 A g − 1 after 1000 cycles even under a high P loading of 36.7%, with P approaching its theoretical capacity. This work provides an effective structural and interfacial engineering strategy to overcome the fundamental challenges of P-based electrodes, demonstrating great potential for high-performance LIBs.

Synergistic P/Co Modulation of Pt Electronic Structure for Efficient Hydrogen Evolution via Seawater Electrolysis

Yuxin Zhao,Jinlei Shi,Tianyu Xia,Shubing Li,Weijie Liu,Haizhong Guo

Although Co modulation can optimize the electronic structure of Pt for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), PtCo still suffers from chloride ion (Cl–) corrosion in seawater electrolysis, severely limiting its practical applications. This study successfully constructed P-doped PtCo nanoflowers (P-PtCo NFs) with excellent corrosion resistance and rapid water dissociation kinetics through the introduction of P for synergistic electronic regulation. To demonstrate, the P-PtCo NFs require only an 18.2 mV overpotential to achieve 10 mA cm–2 in alkaline seawater, which is significantly lower than those of PtCo NFs (43.2 mV) and commercial Pt/C (65.2 mV), and maintain stable operation for over 500 h in 1 M KOH. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory analyses reveal strong electron interaction between P atoms and PtCo, which downshifts the d-band center of Pt by 0.038 eV and optimizes the adsorption strength of active sites toward hydrogen intermediates. In situ Raman spectroscopy and CO stripping experiments further illustrate that P doping reconstructs the electronic distribution of Pt, effectively promoting water molecule dissociation. This work highlights the essential role of P in conferring both corrosion resistance and fast reaction kinetics, providing a design strategy for efficient and durable seawater electrolysis catalysts through multicomponent electronic synergism.

Charge Redistribution via d–p Hybridization in NiCoP Supported on Ni5P4 Boosts Alkaline Hydrogen Production

Junjie Hu,Yan Sang,Jingwei Xue,Rui Zhang,Lingmei Zhou,Ziqing Meng,Tianchen Ma,Lijuan Chen

Transition-metal phosphides (TMPs) are promising electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), but their industrial-scale application is limited by sluggish water dissociation kinetics and insufficient active site exposure under alkaline conditions. Herein, we demonstrate orbital hybridization engineering in Ni5P4/NiCoP-1 heterostructures fabricated via controlled phosphorization and magnetically modulated electrodeposition (MME). COMSOL simulations, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the heterointerface activates covalent Ni/Co–P bonding through optimized d–p orbital hybridization, leading to favorable electron density redistribution and an upshifted d-band center (ΔE = 0.061 eV). These electronic modifications synergistically enhance OH– adsorption energetics and accelerate water dissociation kinetics. Simultaneously, the strengthened metal–phosphorus bonds endow exceptional corrosion resistance under chloride-rich seawater conditions. As a result, Ni5P4/NiCoP-1 achieves excellent HER performance, requiring ultralow overpotentials of 266 and 325 mV to achieve a current density of 1000 mA cm–2 in 1.0 M KOH and seawater at pH 14, respectively, while maintaining stable operation for 200 h. In a two-electrode electrolyzer, the system requires only 1.62 V to reach 100 mA cm–2 in urea-assisted alkaline seawater, surpassing most reported TMP-based catalysts. The practical applicability is further verified by successfully powering a hydrogen-powered prototype vehicle. This work not only provides mechanistic insights into interfacial electronic structure modulation via d–p orbital hybridization but also establishes MME as a universal approach for high-rate hydrogen production from alkaline freshwater and seawater.

Mitigation of P. gingivalis-exacerbated intestinal inflammation by paeoniflorin through alteration of the gut microbiota

Ru Qu,Ming Li,Ping Li,Ying Song,Biao Dong,Juan Liu,Xuan Mo,Zhenjiang Zech Xu,Xiaochang Huang

Porphyromonas gingivalis is a well-known periodontal pathogen that has also been linked to systemic diseases. In this study, our results revealed that P. gingivalis exacerbated inflammation, as indicated by weight loss, decreased colon length, and increased colonic tissue inflammation. Furthermore, P. gingivalis increased the population of Th17 cells in the spleen and upregulated the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines in mice. Additionally, P. gingivalis aggravated the gut microbiota dysbiosis by reducing the beneficial bacteria like S24-7. In addition, we discovered that paeoniflorin, a widely recognized biologically active phytochemical, had the potential to mitigate the exacerbated inflammation caused by P. gingivalis. Specifically, paeoniflorin treatment rebalanced immune cell populations, reduced the levels of inflammatory cytokines, and reshaped the composition of the gut microbiota. In summary, our findings suggest that paeoniflorin holds promise as a potential therapeutic agent for alleviating the inflammatory effects induced by P. gingivalis.

Fe-Co dual-sites p-d orbital hybridization: Electronic restructuring for accelerated oxygen evolution kinetics

Hui Su,Furong Ye,Siyi Zhang,Changcun Han,Jipeng Dong,Zhixin Dai,Xinguo Ma,Lei Ge

The sluggish anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) kinetics remains a critical bottleneck for sustainable hydrogen production via water electrolysis. Guided by Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations, we engineered Fe-CoS 2 /Ni 3 S 4 dual-site catalysts where Co 3+ and Fe 3+ centers synergistically optimize p-d orbital hybridization to enhance OER kinetics. Operando analyses reveal Co 3+ as primary active sites facilitating rate-limiting OOH* → O 2 desorption with Gibbs free energy (ΔG) reduced by 0.94 eV, while Fe-induced electron delocalization lowers intermediate coupling barriers. Notably, the catalyst facilitates dynamic reconstruction, generating metastable Co 3+ species with optimized eg orbital occupancy (t 2 g 5 eg 1 configuration) and strengthened p-d hybridization via Fe-mediated charge transfer. This electronic synergy enables ultralow overpotentials of 156 mV (hydrogen evolution reaction HER) and 230 mV (OER) at 50 mA cm −2 , with a cell voltage of 1.48 V for overall water splitting at 10 mA cm −2 . The dual-site architecture simultaneously suppresses metal dissolution (<12 % after 20 h) while maintaining 89.2 % initial activity. This work establishes a dual-regulation strategy: atomic-level orbital engineering for OER intermediate optimization and dynamic surface reconstruction for HER-active phase stabilization, offering a paradigm for designing robust bifunctional electrocatalysts.

The enhanced catalytic degradation of SiO2/Fe3O4/C@TiO2 photo-Fenton system on p-nitrophenol

Hou Yanhui,Wang Yechen,Yuan Huili,Chen Hang,Chen Guowei,Shen Junhai,Li Liangchao

Heterogeneous photo-Fenton SiO 2 /Fe 3 O 4 /C@TiO 2 (SFCT) catalyst with a core-multishell structure and a diameter of about 550 nm was successfully prepared and was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), TEM, XRD, Raman, and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR). The results illustrated that anatase TiO 2 coexisted with rutile TiO 2 , in which the anatase phase was the main crystal phase. In addition, the catalytic activity of SFCT catalyst had been evaluated in the catalytic degradation on p-nitrophenol (PNP). The influence factors on the PNP degradation, including SFCT component ratio ( m SFC / m TiO2 ), H 2 O 2 dosage, solution pH, and PNP concentration, had been investigated. And the contrast experiments about the photo-Fenton catalytic mechanism revealed that the SFCT-2 catalyst possessed a superior activity in the neutral environment due to the optimal activity matching between Fe 3 O 4 and TiO 2 , and it exhibited the stable catalytic performance after five successive recycles. Therefore, the SFCT-2 catalyst had a promising application for the photo-Fenton degradation of organic contaminant.

Anisotropic, low-tortuosity and ultra-thick red P@C-Wood electrodes for sodium-ion batteries

Longfei Han,Junling Wang,Xiaowei Mu,Can Liao,Wei Cai,Zhixin Zhao,Yongchun Kan,Weiyi Xing,Yuan Hu

Red phosphorus (P) is considered to be the most suitable electrode for sodium-ion batteries due to its low cost, earth abundance and high theoretical capacity. Numerous studies have focused on improving the low conductivity and the extremely large volume change of red P during the cycling process. However, these strategies heavily decrease the P mass loading in the electrode. Herein, inspired by natural wood, we successfully develop an ultra-thick bulk red Phosphorus@Carbon-Wood (red P@C-Wood) electrode via the vaporization-condensation process. The sodium-ion batteries assembled with the fabricated red P@C-Wood electrode provide a high areal capacity of 18 mA h cm−2 (≈5 times those of other reported electrodes) and the P mass loading of up to 8.4 mg cm−2 (≥2 times those of other reported electrodes). The combination of red phosphorus and carbonized wood provides a new strategy for people to improve the areal energy density of lithium and sodium batteries.

N, P codoped carbon nanosheets derived from rice husk for supercapacitors with high energy density

Feng Wei,Yuchen Guo,Shichao Wang,Yaojie Gao,Jun Qiao,Songlin Ran,Mengcheng Han

Supercapacitors (SCs) have been widely used owing to their merits of long cycle life, excellent physiochemical stability and zero-carbon emission. However, the low energy density of SCs restricts their further applications. Herein, the N, P doped carbon nanosheets (NPCNs) were prepared by using silicon-removed carbon as carbon resource derived from rice husk . The as-prepared NPCN not only possesses a large surface area of 1701.6 m 2  g −1 and a high ratio of mesopore volume to total pore volume (62.11 %) for adsorption and transfer of electrolyte ions , but also has a suitable nitrogen and phosphorus content for electron conduction and contribution of additional active sites to generate pseudo-capacitance through redox. Therefore, the excellent electrochemical properties have been obtained for NPCN-based SCs in the alkaline electrolyte , e.g. satisfactory capacitance of 396.1 F g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 , outstanding rate properties of 319.2 F g −1 at 40 A g −1 , long cyclability with capacitance decay of 0.95 % after 30,000 cycles. Additionally, the energy density of the NPCN-based SCs with neutral electrolyte and ionic liquid electrolyte increased 2.67-fold and 11-fold to 33.25 and 137.24 Wh kg −1 , respectively. This study opens up a feasible route by crafting heteroatoms and using high voltage window electrolyte to obtain the high energy density for SCs.
