Gram-scale fabrication of Bi@C nanoparticles through one-step hydrothermal method for dual-model imaging-guided NIR-II photothermal therapy

Wenyao Zhen,Shangjie An,Wei Wang,Yang Liu,Xiaodan Jia,Chao Wang,Mengchao Zhang,Xiue Jiang

At present, increasing attention is being paid to photothermal therapy corresponding to the second near infrared (NIR-II) range (1000–1700 nanometers); however, its biomedical applications related to carbon-based nanomaterials (CNMs) have always been limited by the large-scale fabrication of excellent diagnostic probes with a suitable size and optical absorption cross-section. Herein, we successfully prepared Bi@C nanoparticles with a suitable size and high output (3.14 g per patch) through a one-pot hydrothermal method. By combining Bi with carbon, the optical absorption in the NIR-II range was enhanced compared to that for single carbon; moreover, Bi@C could no longer be easily oxidized due to the protection of outer C compared with individual Bi. Furthermore, because of the high atomic number of Bi (Z = 83), the Bi@C nanoparticles exhibited computed imaging contrast properties. According to the in vitro and in vivo experiments, the Bi@C nanoparticles could ablate cancer cells under illumination with a 1064 nm laser with deeper penetration and an appropriate permissible exposure (MPE) to the laser (1 W cm−2), showing excellent performance for the diagnosis and treatment of tumors. This study provides a simple method to synthesize metal–carbon nanocomposites to enhance the NIR-II optical absorption efficiency for effective deep-seated tumor photothermal therapy and will further broaden the applications of CNMs.

Fabrication of a piezoelectric polyvinylidene fluoride/carbonyl iron (PVDF/CI) magnetic composite film towards the magnetic field and deformation bi-sensor

Min Sang,Sheng Wang,Mei Liu,Linfeng Bai,Wanquan Jiang,Shouhu Xuan,Xinglong Gong

In this paper, a versatile polyvinylidene fluoride/carbonyl iron (PVDF/CI) composite film was prepared by doping magnetic carbonyl iron (CI) particles into piezoelectric polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) matrix. Without influencing the piezoelectric structure of PVDF, CI particles enhanced the Young's modulus and maximum tensile strength of composite films. Due to the magnetic driven characteristic, PVDF/CI composite films exhibited distinct magnetic-mechanic-electric coupling properties. The piezoelectric charge signals could be generated by applying the bending deformation or magnetic field . Taking PVDF/CI-10% (CI content was 10 wt%) film as an example, the piezoelectric charges under 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 mm bending displacement were 3.0, 9.6, 14.9, 18.6, and 24.6 pC respectively. Moreover, when the magnetic field varied from 0 to 600 mT, the generated magneto-electric charges of PVDF/CI-10% film increased from 0 to 676 pC. The quantitative relationship between magnetic field and magneto-electric charges was obtained by the polynomial fitting method and the correlation coefficient was up to 0.97. Owing to the ideal piezoelectricity, excellent stability, light weight and desirable flexibility, PVDF/CI composite films showed promising applications in deformation sensor and magnetic field sensor.

Direct electrochemical reduction of solid Bi2O3 to Bi as a high-performance anode for sodium-ion batteries using deep eutectic solvent

Weijian Xue,Min Li,Yingqing Zhao,Yifan Deng,Ying Li

The direct reduction of solid Bi 2 O 3 to Bi used for a high-performance anode is studied for the first time. Cyclic voltammetry results indicate that the conversion of solid Bi 2 O 3 is a one-step process. Electrolysis measurements using a solid Bi 2 O 3 cathode were carried out at various experimental conditions. X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements of the electrolytic samples reveal that the solid Bi 2 O 3 can be completed reduced to Bi. The electrolytic Bi obtained at 2.6 V for 6 h achieves a long and steady cycle, a higher specific capacity than 403.2 mAh g −1 , and a higher capacity retention than 95.5 % cycling for even 4000 cycles, as well as an excellent rate capability. The electrochemical deoxidation approach can provide a green and straightforward pathway for producing high-performance sodium-ion batteries anodes.

A Facile Photoelectrochemical Sensor for High Sensitive Dopamine and Ascorbic Acid Detection Based on Bi surface Plasmon Resonance-Promoted BiVO4 Microspheres

Yajie Cheng,Chengjin Chen,Shengnan Hu,Xuebing Liu,Li Zhang,Wangqiang Huang,Shaodong Song,Lingyun Xia

In this work, BiVO4/Bi-X (X represented the quality of adding NaNH4, X = 0.1, 0.3 and 0.5) are synthesized through two-step hydrothermal methods. The photoelectrochemical (PEC) experiments demonstrate that the PEC properties of BiVO4/Bi-0.3 bear the best PEC performance compared with other materials. Meanwhile, UV–vis Diffuse reflection spectra (DRS) and photoluminescence (PL) also affirm that the Bi metal SPR effect is able to improve the energy conversion efficiency. For this reason, the PEC sensors based on a bifunctional BiVO4/Bi-0.3 are fabricated, which demonstrates a broad linear range from 0.2–118 μM and 0.05–100 μM for sensing ascorbic acid (AA) and Dopamine (DA).

Unprecedented Piezo-Photocatalytic H2O2 Synthesis via Synergy of Dual Charge Transfer Channels and Frustrated Lewis Pairs in Bi-Ionic Carbon Nitride

Yue An,Na Tian,Wenying Yu,Xiaolei Zhang,Yiwei He,Haitao Liu,Yihe Zhang,Hongwei Huang

The efficient synthesis of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) through piezo-photocatalysis is a promising yet challenging sustainable route, primarily limited by inefficient charge separation and sluggish surface reaction kinetics. This study introduces an innovative bi-ionic (K + /Ca 2+ ) co-doping strategy to engineer graphitic carbon nitride, creating a high-performance catalyst for H 2 O 2 production. The bi-ionic doping structure, combined with introduced cyano groups, constructs multi-charge transfer channels and significantly enhances the piezoelectric polarization field, which dramatically promotes the directional separation and migration of photogenerated charge carriers. More importantly, the Ca 2+ sites and adjacent N-cyano groups form synergistic Frustrated Lewis pairs, which simultaneously facilitate spontaneous ethanol dissociation to supply protons and strongly adsorb and activate O 2 molecules. Consequently, the optimized catalyst shows an exceptional piezo-photocatalytic H 2 O 2 production rate of 24.95 mmol g −1 h −1 under visible light and ultrasound, significantly outperforming most reported analogues. Furthermore, we fabricated shape-tunable hydrogels by integrating the catalyst with Sil-MA, which not only facilitates catalyst recovery but also creates a beneficial gas-solid interface when coated on floating substrates. The floating hydrogel system maintains stable H 2 O 2 production, demonstrating great potential for practical applications. This work provides valuable insights into designing efficient piezo-photocatalytic systems for sustainable chemical synthesis.

Engineering d−p Orbital Hybridization Sites in Coupled Pd Atom-Cluster with Bi-Doped Hydroxyapatite for Enhanced Semi-Hydrogenation of Alkynes

Shunwu Wang,Zhenbo Guo,Bing Tang,Jinglin Du,Qianling Zou,Ligang Wang,Xiaohui Li,Xiaodong Zhou,Lang Liu,Yadong Li

Developing chemoselective hydrogenation of alkynes into alkenes is one of the major strategies of the fine chemical industry; however, it presents significant challenges in achieving the semi-hydrogenation of carbon−carbon triple bond (C=C) to carbon−carbon double bond (C=C) without further hydrogenation. Herein, it is proposed that d−p orbital hybridization between the Pd single-atom-cluster sites and the bismuth species can serve as a descriptor for revealing the catalytic activity. Guided by DFT simulation, the well-dispersed Pd clusters and single-atom Pd−O4 sites on Bi-doped hydroxyapatite (PdSA+C/HAP-Bi) are fabricated for semi-hydrogenation of phenylacetylene, realizing the trade-off between activity and selectivity with a robust turnover frequency of 10,140 h−1, surpassing those of the commercial Pd/C catalyst and most of the reported catalysts. It also displays good stability for enduring six cycles with minimal declines in conversion and selectivity. Notably, this catalyst offers a general platform, showcasing broad substrate compatibility across at least 30 types of alkynes. Particularly, the introduction of well-dispersed Bi and PdC can induce prominent electron redistribution at the Pd−O4 sites and adjust the hybridization between the central Pd 3d and Bi 4f orbitals. Simultaneously, the strong electronic coupling in Pd−O−Bi pairs facilitated the d-electron domination near the Fermi level, boosted the activation of H2 and phenylacetylene at PdC sites, and improved the desorption capacity of styrene at Pd−O4 sites. This synergy ultimately lowers the energy barrier for the phenylacetylene semi-hydrogenation.

Boosting photocatalytic H₂O₂ production via triplet exciton-mediated singlet oxygen generation on a Bi@g-C₃N₄/ST-NS heterojunction

Di Li,Huimin Zhu,Yuan Zhang,Shaofei Yang,Ruiyu Zhu,Jiaoe Dang,Fang Song,Jun Zhou

The escalating global energy crisis and environmental pollution has drawn increasing attention. As a green and sustainable alternative, photocatalytic H 2 O 2 synthesis has attracted widespread interest. In this study, we has designed a novel exciton-regulated photocatalyst (Bi@g-C 3 N 4 /ST-NS) by integrating bismuth-doped graphitic carbon nitride with porphyrin-based supramolecular nanostructures (ST-NS). The composite was synthesized through a sequential process involving solvothermal reaction, high-temperature calcination, and solution-phase self-assembly. We systematically investigated its crystal structure, photoelectronic properties, and the mechanistic basis of photocatalytic H 2 O 2 production. Characterization results confirmed the successful incorporation of Bi single atoms into the sixfold cavities of g-C 3 N 4 , forming a p-n heterojunction with ST-NS while preserving the crystallinity of the host matrix. The built-in interfacial electric field not only promoted efficient charge separation but also extended the visible-light absorption range and prolonged the carrier lifetime. Performance evaluations revealed that Bi@g-C 3 N 4 /ST-NS exhibited significantly enhanced H 2 O 2 generation activity compared to pristine Bi@g-C 3 N 4 , with optimal performance achieved at a 10:1 mass ratio. Under visible-light irradiation, the H 2 O 2 concentration reached 1134 μM in the reaction solution, representing a 2.5-fold improvement over Bi@g-C 3 N 4 . Mechanistic studies indicated that the heterojunction facilitated efficient intersystem crossing from singlet to triplet excitons. Rather than following the conventional superoxide radical (·O 2 - ) pathway, these triplet excitons activated ground-state oxygen to generate singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) via resonance energy transfer. The subsequent highly selective two-electron reduction of 1 O 2 yielded H 2 O 2 , effectively circumventing the high-energy barrier steps associated with traditional pathways. This work thus presented a promising strategy for the rational design of high-efficiency photocatalytic systems through exciton regulation.

Amorphous TiO2 Ion transport bridges boosting sodiation kinetics of carbon-encapsulated bi nanofibers for fast-charging and long-cycle sodium storage

Yuxin Ge,Zhenchao Li,Tong Zhang,Yang Lu,Lijin Xie,Danyang Yu,Xiaochuan Ren

Flexible carbon buffering and rigid TiO 2 confinement stabilize Bi nanoparticles. • Amorphous TiO 2 with pseudocapacitive ion storage acts as an ion-transport bridge for fast Na + shuttling to Bi. • The as-prepared electrode exhibits excellent fast-charging capability and long-term cycling stability. Developing fast-charging sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) is highly desirable yet fundamentally challenging due to the sluggish Na + diffusion kinetics and severe structural degradation of electrode materials. Despite their high theoretical capacity, alloy-type Bi anodes suffer from severe volume expansion and inherently sluggish solid-state sodiation kinetics, which lead to limited rate capability. Herein, Bi/TiO 2 /C composite nanofibers (BTC) are fabricated via electrospinning and carbonization, achieving uniform embedding of Bi nanoparticles in an amorphous TiO 2 -decorated carbon nanofiber. The carbon framework provides flexible buffering and a conductive network. Amorphous TiO 2 not only acts as a rigid filler to further buffer the expansion and aggregation of Bi but also exhibits pseudocapacitive Na + storage behavior, allowing it to function as a local Na + reservoir and ion-transport bridge. This structure enables rapid Na + supply to adjacent Bi active sites, thereby accelerating the stepwise alloying reaction and maintaining fast reaction kinetics even at ultrahigh rates. This synergistic effect enables the BTC anode to deliver 226.16 mAh g -1 after 3000 cycles at 20 A g -1 , and the assembled Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 @C (NVP@C)//BTC full cell maintains 207.72 mAh g -1 after 4000 cycles. This study offers an innovative strategy for structural regulation and performance optimization of anode materials for high-capacity fast-charging SIBs. A novel Bi/TiO 2 /C composite nanofiber anode is rationally designed via electrospinning and carbonization for fast-charging sodium storage. Amorphous TiO 2 serves dual roles as ion-transport bridges that enrich Na + and as dispersants that prevent Bi agglomeration, while the carbon matrix buffers volume expansion, thereby synergistically accelerating sodiation kinetics and enabling ultrahigh rate capability with long-term cycling stability. Closing the electron/proton kinetic disconnect via interfacial proton spillover on adjacent Ag-Bi bimetallic surface enables efficient photocatalytic CO2 methanation

Qiu-ran Lu,Ying-jie Sun,Ya-mei Xue,Xiao-jing Wang,Hui-ying Mu,Fa-tang Li

A dual-scale Ag-Bi/TiO 2 -Ov architecture couples photogenerated electrons with interfacial protons, resolving the kinetic disconnect in CO 2 methanation. • Adjacent Ag-Bi sites synergistically lower the barrier for *COOH formation while facilitating proton spillover from TiO 2 -Ov. • The optimized photocatalyst achieves a CH₄ evolution rate of 75.17μmol·g −1 ·h −1 with 97.2% selectivity under sacrificial-agent-free conditions. Solar-driven CO 2 -to-CH 4 conversion could help close the anthropogenic carbon loop, yet its practical realization is consistently undermined by poor selectivity and a kinetic disconnect between interfacial electron transfer and proton availability. Herein, we address these limitations by constructing a dual-scale architecture that deliberately couples proton spillover dynamics with CO 2 activation pathways. Highly dispersed Ag-Bi hetero-bimetallic nanoalloys are integrated onto oxygen-vacancy-enriched TiO 2 through a one-step reductive transformation of metal oxyacid precursors, establishing atomically intimate Ag-Bi dual active sites. Operando diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy coupled with density functional theory calculations reveals that this bimetallic interface not only lowers the *CO 2 →*COOH free-energy barrier and stabilizes *CO intermediates to suppress parasitic desorption, but also orchestrates directional proton spillover via localized electrostatic modulation. Electrons relayed from the oxygen-vacancy-rich TiO 2 converge spatially with protons generated in situ at surface oxygen vacancies, establishing a concerted proton-coupled electron transfer channel that governs the sequential hydrogenation of adsorbed *CO to CH 4 . Guided by this mechanistic rationale, the optimized photocatalyst (A 1 B 1 T30) achieves a CH 4 production rate of 75.17 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 with 97.2% selectivity. By resolving how electrons and protons converge at the interface, the work identifies a concrete materials lever for selective C 1 photoreduction. Bi-layered hollow amphoteric composites: Rational construction and ultra-efficient sorption performance for anionic Cr(VI) and cationic Cu(II) ions

Hua-Rong Yang,Shan-Shan Li,Chen Yang,Qing-Da An,Shang-Ru Zhai,Zuo-Yi Xiao

Here, we have developed a novel bilayer hollow amphiphilic biosorbent (BHAB-3) with large adsorption capacity, rapid adsorption kinetics, and cost-effective for the removal of Cr(VI) and Cu(II) from aqueous solutions. The synthesis was based on the clever use of freeze-drying to fix the structure, secondary modification of the carboxymethyl cellulose microspheres with polyethyleneimine and cross-linking by glutaraldehyde. The consequences of pH, initial concentration, contact time and temperature on adsorption were investigated. The Langmuir model fits showed that the maximum adsorption capacities of the two target heavy metal ions reached 835.91 and 294.79 mg/g, respectively. Moreover, BHAB-3 was characterized by SEM, FT-IR, TGA, and XPS synergistically, showing that it exhibits a strong complexation ability for Cu(II) and a strong electrostatic effect for Cr(VI). Adsorption and desorption experiments showed only a slight decrease in the adsorption capacity of the BHAB-3 for Cr(VI) and Cu(II) ions after 5 and 26 cycles, respectively. Given the excellent properties of this adsorbent, it is a promising candidate for heavy metal ion removal.

Janus-like Structure and Resonance Level Actualized Ultralow Lattice Thermal Conductivity and Enhanced ZTave in Mg3(Sb, Bi)2-Based Zintls

Lifeng Jiang,Shuyue Tan,Rongchun Chen,Jingwei Xian,Hongrui Li,Donghu Zhou,Huijun Kang,Zongning Chen,Enyu Guo,Tongmin Wang

Grain boundary (GB) engineering includes grain size and GB segregation. Grain size has been proven to affect the electrical properties of Mg3(Sb, Bi)2 at low temperatures. However, the formation mechanism of GB segregation and what kind of GB segregation is beneficial to the performance are still unclear. Here, the Ga/Bi cosegregation at GBs and Mg segregation within grains optimize the transport of electrons and phonons simultaneously. Ga/Bi cosegregation promotes the formation of Janus-like structures due to the diverse ordering tendencies of liquid Mg3Sb2 and Mg3Bi2 and the absence of a solid solution of Ga/Bi. The Janus-like structure significantly reduces the room-temperature lattice thermal conductivity by introducing diverse microdefects. Meanwhile, a coherent interface between the nano Mg segregation region and the matrix is formed, which reduces the thermal conductivity without affecting the carrier transport. Furthermore, the band structure calculations show that Ga doping introduces the resonance level, increasing the Seebeck coefficient. Finally, the lattice thermal conductivity reaches ∼0.4 W m–1 K–1, and a high average ZT of 1.21 between 323 and ∼773 K is achieved for Mg3.2Y0.02Ga0.03Sb1.5Bi0.5. This work provides guidance for improving the thermoelectric performance via designing cosegregation.

Reconfiguration of metal-organic frameworks to form ultrafine Bi dots as an excellent high-current performance of lithium-ion battery anode

Yunpeng Cao,Xue Zhou,Faming Gao

The investigation of Bi-based metal-organic frameworks (Bi-MOFs) as anode materials has garnered significant attention because of their higher lithium storage capacity. Nevertheless, they are prone to structural collapse when undergoing the process of charging and discharging, resulting in irreversible capacity degradation. In this study, we develop novel Bi-MOF and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) composites named Bi-MOF@RGO-x, where “x” represents the amount of RGO incorporated during the synthesis process. As expected, when used as an anode for LIBs , the Bi-MOF@RGO-15 electrode exhibited an excellent capacity of 400 mAh·g −1 and ultra-long cycling stability of more than 3500 cycles at the current density of 10 A·g −1 (the specific capacity is the same as the second cycle). An interesting Bi-MOF@RGO reconfiguration phenomenon could be observed in that amorphous carbon layers and ultra-small bismuth dots could be obtained after repeated charging/discharging. Meanwhile, the amorphous carbon layers could uniformly wrap around the in-situ deposited bismuth dots to act as a buffer against volume fluctuations during bismuth lithiation and delithiation. The in-situ deposited bismuth dots had a shorter Li + transport path, facilitating faster Li + transport to obtain an excellent rate performance. This reconfiguration did not cause the degradation of battery performance, but on the contrary, was an important reason for obtaining high-performance MOF anodes. This study demonstrates that the reconfiguration of Bi-MOF is a favorable anodic conversion process, providing different insights into studying anodes for MOFs.
