A new plant-esterase inhibition based electrochemical sensor with signal amplification by MoS2@N-CDs for chlorpyrifos detection

Jiayu Chen,Chun Ji,Xiao Wang,Yunxia Tian,Han Tao

Chlorpyrifos (CPF) is the most common pesticide entering the food chain and posing a threat to human health. This study presents a new electrochemical biosensor based on molybdenum disulfide nanosheets and nitrogen-doped carbon dot nanocomposite (MoS2@N-CDs) and kidney bean esterase (KdBE), and it is shown to achieve accurate detection of CPF. MoS2@N-CDs were prepared by a facile solvothermal method and characterized by electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Electrochemical characterization confirmed that MoS2@N-CDs facilitated electron transfer and increased the electroactive surface area of the electrode, thereby improved the sensing performance of the electrode. The oxidation peak current of 1-naphthol, which was produced by the hydrolysis of 1-naphthyl acetate catalyzed by KdBE, was adopted as the signal of the sensor. CPF can suppress KdBE activity and consequently cause a decrease in the sensing signal. The experimental results show that the variation of sensing signal is a reliable index to evaluate the CPF level. Under the optimized conditions, the developed enzyme sensor showed superior CPF assay performance with a linear detection range as wide as 0.01–500 μg L−1 and LOD as low as 3.5 × 10−3 μg L−1 (S/N = 3). The inter- and intra-batch RSDs for electrode testing were 4.02% and 2.69%, respectively. Moreover, the developed biosensor also showed good stability and anti-interference. The spiked recoveries of CPF in oilseed rape and cabbage ranged from 98.09% to 106.01% with low relative standard deviation (RSD) (<5.23%), suggesting that the sensor is a promising tool to enable simple, low-cost but highly sensitive large-scale screening of CPF residues in food.

Enhanced charge separation of CuS and CdS quantum-dot-cosensitized porous TiO2-based photoanodes for photoelectrochemical water splitting

Jimin Du,Mengke Yang,Fangfang Zhang,Xuechun Cheng,Haoran Wu,Huichuang Qin,Qingsong Jian,Xialing Lin,Kaidi Li,Dae Joon Kang

Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting using high-performance catalysts shows considerable promise in generating environment-friendly hydrogen energy. Its practical applications, however, suffer from several shortcomings, such as low photocurrent density, large onset-voltage value, and poor durability. In this study, CuS and CdS quantum-dot-cosensitized porous TiO 2 -based PEC catalysts (CuS-CT) have been successfully synthesized via in situ sulfuration of CuO and CdO coexisting inside a porous TiO 2 monolith by a hydrothermal method . Compared to porous TiO 2 , CuS-sensitized porous TiO 2 (CuS-TiO 2 ), and CdS-sensitized porous TiO 2 (CdS-TiO 2 ) in terms of PEC performance, the CuS-CT photoanode exhibited a significantly high anodic photocurrent for water splitting under simulated sunlight radiation. The photocurrent produced by the optimized sample of 7% CuS-5% CdS-TiO 2 (7% CuS-CT) was nearly 2.7 times higher than that of pure porous TiO 2 at 1.0   V versus a reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). Porous TiO 2 possesses large surface areas that can drive fast electrolyte transport and afford more surface reaction active sites. On the other hand, CuS and CdS quantum dots not only broaden the visible light absorption range, but also improve photoinduced electron-hole separation efficiency. The co-sensitized multi-nanostructures photoanodes lead to a remarkable and promising application in PEC water splitting reactions.

Photocatalytic selective oxidation of HMF to DFF based on hollow CdS QDs/MIL-101 composites under visible light

Yuwei Liang,Chunling Hu,Peng Chen,Qi Li,Jianning Wu,Zhiyong Liu,Jichang Liu,Yanlong Tai

5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) can catalyte into 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) which had received much attention as a potential biomass resource. Here, we used a simple and effective method to construct hollow CdS quantum dot (CdS QDs)/MIL-101 heterostructures with high contact area and multiple active sites. The structure of heterostructures could improve photocatalytic activity by charge transfer, photogenerated carrier separation and the multiple refractions of light supported within the hollow-structured CdS QDs. The detailed catalytic mechanism was illustrated by trap agent experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, in which superoxide radicals (·O 2 - ) play a decisive role in the catalytic oxidation of HMF to DFF. Furthermore, the large specific surface area of MIL-101 adsorbs O 2 from the reaction system thereby accelerating the ·O 2 - formation process. Under environmental conditions, 70 % CdS QDs/MIL-101 exhibited optimal catalytic performance. Comparing with pure CdS QDs, the photocurrent enhances 1.8 times, HMF conversion is 1.5 times and DFF selectivity is 1.2 times. This work provide a useful way to improve the conversion of biomass by Z-heterostructures under ambient conditions.

Rapid Construction of PVA@CDs/SiO2 Fluorescent/Structural Color Dual-Mode Anti-Counterfeiting Labels via Spray-Coating Method

Wenjuan Liu,Ling Yang,Ting Li,Yuejun Liu,Zengming Tang,Shuyang Hu,Xionggang Wang,Haihu Tan

A method of sequential spraying of polyvinyl alcohol with carbon quantum dots (PVA@CDs) aqueous suspension and SiO2aqueous suspension is proposed to rapidly prepare multicolor dual-mode anti-counterfeiting labels. With the optimization of the concentration (15%) of colloidal microspheres in the SiO2aqueous suspension as well as the spraying process parameters (spray distance of 10 cm, spray duration of 3 s, and assembly temperature of 20 °C), different-sized SiO2microspheres (168 nm, 228 nm, and 263 nm) were utilized to rapidly assemble red, green, and blue photonic crystals. Furthermore, the tunable fluorescence emission of carbon quantum dots endows the labels with yellow, green, and blue fluorescence. The constructed dual-mode labeling was used to develop an anti-counterfeiting code with dual-channel information storage capabilities and also to create dual-mode multicolor anti-counterfeiting labels on various packaging substrates. This work provides a novel solution for anti-counterfeiting packaging and information storage.

Synthesis and performance optimization of CsPbBr3/CdS core/shell lead halide perovskite nanocrystals by an ion exchange method

Jinxiao Hu,Shuyi Ning,Chaoqi Hao,Zheng Ren,Cong Li,Fenghe Wang,Guoyi Dong,Gang Yue,Li Guan,Li Guan,Xu Li,Xu Li,Zhenyang Liu,Zhenyang Liu

All-inorganic lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) have excellent optoelectronic properties and promising applications. Improving the stability of inorganic halide NCs and optimizing their photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQY) has become an urgent task. Constructing core-shell structures is an effective method to improve the environmental stability and PLQY, however, realizing core-shell structured perovskite NCs with good dispersion and multiple perovskites encapsulated within the shell material remains challenging. In this work, CdS shells were grown on the surface of CsPbBr3 NCs by ion-exchange method utilizing perovskite NCs with their ionic properties, and the effectiveness of the surface shell protection is reflected in its enhancement of long-term storage stability, storage stability in water, and thermal stability of NCs. In addition, the PLQY and exciton binding energies of CsPbBr3/CdS NCs are increased. Finally, the NCs were packaged into green emitting LED devices and performed high stability. The results will facilitate the further commercialization of all-inorganic lead halide perovskite materials for optoelectronic devices.

Synthesis of Structure-Adjustable R-Au/Pt-CdS Nanohybrids with Strong Plasmon Coupling and Improved Photothermal Conversion Performance

Hangyu Yan,Guowei Li,Fengyuan Zhang,Jingsong Liu,Mengdai Luoshan

Noble metal nanomaterials with a localized surface plasmon resonance effect exhibit outstanding advantages in areas such as photothermal therapy and photocatalysis. As a unique plasmonic metal nanostructure, gold nanobipyramids have been attracting much interest due to their strong specific local electric field intensity, large optical cross sections, and high refractive index sensitivity. In this study, we propose a novel three-component hetero-nanostructure composed of rough gold nanobipyramids (R-Au NBPs), Pt, and CdS. Initially, purified gold nanobipyramids are regrown to form R-Au NBPs that have a certain degree of roughness. These R-Au NBP substrates with a rough surface provide more hotspots and strengthen the intensity of localized electric fields. Subsequently, Pt and CdS nanoparticles are selectively deposited onto the surface of R-Au NBPs. Pt nanoparticles can provide more active sites. Each component of this hetero-nanostructure directly contacts others, creating multiple electron transfer channels. This novel design allows for tunable localized plasmon resonance wavelengths ranging from the visible to near-infrared regions. These factors contribute to the final superior photothermal conversion performance of the R-Au/Pt-CdS nanohybrids. Under the irradiation of near-infrared light (1064 nm), the photothermal conversion efficiency of R-Au/Pt-CdS reached 38.88%, which is 4.49, 1.5, and 1.22 times higher than that of Au NBPs, R-Au NBPs, and R-Au NBPs/Pt, respectively.

Interfacial charge steering in CdS/nitrogen-deficient g-C3N4 heterojunctions boosts solar-driven persulfate activation for PPCPs decontamination

Jie Mao,Jihui Wang,Jun Zhang,Sha Shi,Yizhen Zhang,Yaohui Bai,Jiuhui Qu

The persistence of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in aquatic ecosystems poses severe environmental risks, primarily owing to their incomplete removal by conventional treatment methods and potential for inducing bacterial resistance. While CdS/g-C 3 N 4 heterojunctions exhibit promise for photocatalytic degradation, the role of nitrogen-defect engineering in steering interfacial charge behavior to synergize photocatalysis with persulfate (PS)-based advanced oxidation remains unexplored. Herein, a nitrogen-deficient Z-scheme CdS/g-C 3 N 4 (CdS/N-CN) heterojunction was designed via hydrothermal synthesis to enable solar-driven cooperative photocatalysis and PS activation for PPCPs degradation. The optimized system achieved complete degradation of 10 mg/L sulfamethoxazole (SMX) within 60 min under visible light, achieving a rate constant (0.157 min −1 ) 29 times higher than pristine g-C 3 N 4 . Mechanistic investigations demonstrated dual-pathway operation: a built-in electric field drove Z-scheme charge transfer, migrating electrons from N-CN to CdS while holes in N-CN served as primary oxidants. Meanwhile, electrons from CdS activated PS to generate sulfate and hydroxyl radicals, with the latter transforming into singlet oxygen for supplementary oxidation. This synergistic photocatalysis-PS activation system maintained efficient redox activity while enhancing charge separation, ultimately enabling effective PPCPs decontamination. This research presents a novel strategy for leveraging solar-driven heterojunctions and persulfate chemistry for sustainable water remediation.

Three-Channel Electron Engineered Fe-88A@CeO2/CDs Nanozyme with Enhanced Oxidase-Like Activity for Efficient Biomimetic Catalysis

Kai Liu,Haibing Zhu,Feng Shi,Juan Li,Xiang Li,Zijun Lai,Haibo Li,Hao Zeng,Zhanjun Yang,Huan Pang

Iron-based metal-organic framework (MOF) nanozymes have garnered considerable attention owing to a large specific surface area, adjustable porosity, large Fe-O clusters, and unsaturated Fe sites. However, the sluggish charge-transfer rate and restricted active sites of the nanozymes lead to poor enzyme-like activity and further impede their biomimetic catalysis. Herein, a three-channel electron-engineered Fe-88A@CeO 2 /carbon dots (Fe-88A@CeO 2 /CDs) nanozyme is proposed for efficient biomimetic catalysis. Fe-88A@CeO 2 /CDs nanozyme is prepared by incorporation of CeO 2 and CDs into the porosity of Fe-88A. Specifically, the original Fe (II)/Fe (III) and the introduced Ce (III)/Ce (IV) redox couples of the nanozyme constitute a dual electron transfer channel. Furthermore, the presence of CDs produces another electron transfer channel. The three-channel electron engineering strategy for nanozymes can accelerate the electron transfer process accompanied with more active sites, thereby greatly enhancing the oxidase-like activity of Fe-88A@CeO 2 /CDs for biomimetic catalysis. The nanozyme can efficiently convert oxygen to · O 2 − ${\mathrm{O}}_2^ - $ , oxidizing colorless 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to blue ox-TMB, and meanwhile the ox-TMB effectively quenches the fluorescence of CDs. As proof of concept, the nanozyme is utilized to construct a colorimetric-fluorescence bimodal immunosensor for monitoring Staphylococcal enterotoxin B with excellent performance. This work provides promising insight into designing excellent nanozymes for effective biomimetic catalysis in various fields.

Rose-like Ni-Co-Mn-S@N-CDs electrode material for flexible hybrid supercapacitors with high electrochemical performance

Bin Lu,Guo-Tao Xiang,Jia-Lei Xu,Rui-Dong Shi,Na Chen,Yong-Da Hu,Raul D. Rodriguez,Jin-Ju Chen

Ternary transition metal sulfides are extensively considered as supercapacitor electrode materials due to their remarkable electrochemical properties . However, inferior electrical conductivity and structural stability severely limit their applications. Here, we address these limitations by introducing N-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) into Ni-Co-Mn-S nanoflowers via a two-step hydrothermal process followed by electrodeposition . Ni-Co-Mn-S nanoflowers feature a skeleton structure supporting rich ion transfer paths and abundant active sites, while electrodeposited N-CDs increase the electrical conductivity and enhance the cycling performance. The resulting Ni-Co-Mn-S@N-CDs material demonstrates a remarkable specific capacity of 2267 F g −1 at 1 A g −1 and maintains 96.2 % capacity after 10,000 cycles at 10 A g −1 . Moreover, this electrode material allows the development of hybrid supercapacitors with an impressive energy density of 61.6 Wh kg −1 at 800 W kg −1 and a superior capacitance retention of 89.0 % after 20,000 charge/discharge cycles at 5 A g −1 , alongside an excellent flexibility under various deformations. These findings represent a significant advancement in hybrid solid-state supercapacitors with promising implications for flexible energy storage technologies.

Cd vacancies and Pt-Pd single atoms induced symmetry breaking in CdS for efficient piezo-photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Haoqiang Feng,Yike Li,Xian Liu,Kang Wang,Qianhao Du,Yingju Wang,Zhongjun Li

Developing efficient piezo-photocatalysts through integrating cation vacancies with double metal single atoms is vitally important for hydrogen production, while it remains a challenge. In this work, cadmium vacancy (V Cd ) as well as Pt and Pd single atoms (Pt-Pd) were simultaneously introduced into CdS to construct V Cd -CdS/Pt-Pd catalysts for piezo-photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. In-depth characterizations and DFT calculations confirmed that the symmetry breaking caused by V Cd , Pt-Pd dual single atoms and ultrasonic could induce the polarization enhancement and charge asymmetric distribution, modulate the density of electronic states as well as optimize the adsorption of H* intermediates. Under light and ultrasound, the optimal V Cd -CdS/Pt 0.20 -Pd 0.30 achieved the piezo-photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of 104.4 mmol g −1 h −1 , which was 10.0 and 30.7 times that of V Cd -CdS and CdS, respectively. The significant improvement of piezo-photocatalytic performance was due to the synergistic interaction of V Cd -CdS, Pt-Pd double single atoms and the ultrasonic-induced external stress, which enhanced the polarized electric field in V Cd -CdS/Pt-Pd and promoted the separation and transfer of photo-generated charges. Moreover, the piezoelectric polarization induced by ultrasonic could tilt the energy band and produce a stronger reduction potential, also facilitating the hydrogen evolution reaction. On the whole, the symmetry breaking achieved by structure modifications coupled with external stress effectively boosted the piezo-photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance, which provided a reference for the design of high-efficiency piezo-photocatalysts based on vacancy engineering and double single atoms doping.

The advancement of efficient photocatalysts is essential for tackling global energy and environmental issues. In this work, a unique sheet-on-sheet Cd(OH)2/CdS photocatalyst was synthesized via a facile solution strategy, demonstrating significantly improved photocatalytic performance for H2 generation and Cr(VI) reduction. The optimal 5% Cd(OH)2/CdS obtained an impressive H2 production rate of 3475 μmol·g-1·h-1 under visible light, marking a 6.3 times increase compared to CdS. Additionally, the kinetics of Cr(VI) reduction were markedly accelerated, with a rate constant of 0.2803 min-1, representing a 5.7 times improvement over pure CdS. Moreover, the 2D/2D Cd(OH)2/CdS photocatalyst exhibited exceptional stability, maintaining high photocatalytic activity over multiple reaction cycles. Experimental findings and DFT calculations revealed the charge transfer mechanism between CdS nanosheets and Cd(OH)2 cocatalyst. This work provides insights into designing high-performance CdS-based nanophotocatalysts for water splitting and environmental remediation.

One-pot synthesis of fluorescent nanoprobes based on D-cys-based CDs and quantitative detection of lysine enantiomers

Jinqiu Li,Fanghao Wang,Hao Zhang,Duxia Cao,Ruifang Guan

The recognition of amino acid enantiomers is of great significance in drug research and disease diagnosis. However, the similar physical and chemical properties of enantiomers make chiral recognition challenging. Optical characterization is a promising approach to distinguish enantiomers. Carbon dots (CDs) have attracted widespread attention due to their simple synthesis, high economic benefits, and good biocompatibility. Chiral carbon dots, as fluorescent probes, have gradually received more attraction. Here, a fluorescence probe (CYS-CDs + Cu 2+ ) was constructed using D-Cys as chiral source to synthesize chiral carbon dots (CYS-CDs), and Cu 2+ as inducer to recognize the chirality of lysine enantiomers(L-/D-Lys). And then, based on the ability of Cu 2+ to quench the fluorescence of CYS-CDs and L-Lysine (L-Lys) could restore the fluorescence of the CYS-CDs + Cu 2+ probe, so achieve an “on–off-on” detection mode to detect L-Lys. On the contrary, D-Lys cannot restore the fluorescence of CYS-CDs + Cu 2+ . The probe can distinguish lysine enantiomers not only by fluorescence spectra but also by circular dichroism spectra. And, the probe can be used for the quantitative detection of L-Lys by fluorescence method, of which the detection range is 0–520 μM, and the limit of detection is only 13.70 μM. In addition, a paper-based fluorescent senor was constructed on this basis. This work may be of practical significance to expand the recognition method of amino acid enantiomers.
