Lithium–sulfur batteries (LSBs) are regarded as a competitive candidate for future energy storage systems due to their exceptionally high theoretical capacity and energy density, but their practical use is limited by severe lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) shuttling and uncontrolled lithium dendrite growth, harming cycling stability and Coulombic efficiency. Herein, a multifunctional Ce-ZIF-8/PDA@PP separator is fabricated via in situ growth. Theoretical and experimental studies confirm it integrates synergistic functionalities from polydopamine (PDA), ZIF-8, and Ce doping. The PDA interlayer, rich in polar groups, enhances electrolyte wettability, homogenizes Li+ flux, acts as a chemical anchor and nucleation facilitator, enabling uniform Ce-ZIF-8 growth on inert PP. ZIF-8 provides uniform microporous channels for size-selective Li+ transport and LiPSs anchoring sites. Redox-active Ce3+/Ce4+ centers enable dynamic electron transfer via 4f–5d orbitals, accelerating LiPSs redox kinetics, enhancing adsorption, and regulating Li+ deposition through local electric field modulation. Consequently, symmetric cells with this separator achieve ultralong stability over 3600 h at 1 mA cm–2/1 mAh cm–2, while full cells cycle stably over 600 cycles at 1 C with 0.040% per cycle capacity decay. This study offers a robust separator strategy to concurrently address polysulfide diffusion and lithium dendrite growth in high-performance LSBs.

Ultrasonic-assisted strategy prepares Ce-doped HEOs from high-entropy MOFs. • MOF-derived HEOs retain porous structures and high surface areas after calcination. • Ce doping promotes CO conversion in low-temperature CO oxidation. Developing efficient and durable noble-metal-free catalysts for low-temperature CO oxidation remains a challenge, as conventional transition metal oxides are plagued by sintering, limited active-site accessibility, and poor oxygen activation capability. Herein, a facile and scalable ultrasonic-assisted strategy was developed to synthesize a Ce-doped high-entropy metal–organic framework precursor (6-HE-MOF), followed by controlled calcination to obtain high-entropy oxide (HEO) catalysts. Among them, 6-HEO-550 exhibited the highest catalytic efficacy, achieving complete CO conversion at 140 °C and preserving 100% conversion across a 50 h continuous stability test at 140 °C. Comprehensive structural and surface characterizations reveal that the MOF-derived architecture effectively suppresses particle sintering while preserving an open mesoporous structure with a high specific surface area (60.3 m 2 g −1 ), thereby facilitating active-site exposure and mass transport. Meanwhile, Ce incorporation enriches oxygen vacancies and reactive adsorbed oxygen species. In situ DRIFTS further demonstrates that Ce promotes CO chemisorption and accelerates the formation and conversion of reactive carbonate intermediates, resulting in a reduced apparent activation energy of 51.8 kJ mol −1 . This work demonstrates that coupling high-entropy multicomponent engineering with Ce-induced defect modulation through a MOF-derived strategy provides an effective and scalable route for developing highly efficient, durable, and noble-metal-free catalysts for low-temperature CO oxidation. Catalytic oxidation is one of the most promising methods to remove toluene; manganese-cerium catalysts have high activity in the catalytic oxidation of toluene. Herein, nano-sized ZSM-5 was synthesized using a simple hydrothermal method, and catalysts with different Mn and Ce contents were prepared via alcohol-induced redox precipitation at room temperature. In addition, zeolite provides sufficient surface area for the dispersion of manganese cerium catalysts and plays a role in concentration and enrichment in the catalytic conversion of toluene. Based on the experimental characterization results, the 20Ce/M1Z1 catalyst exhibited the best catalytic activity, achieving 90% toluene conversion at 215 °C. Moreover, the catalyst still has excellent catalytic activity in humid environments. This work provides a new strategy to expose more active sites and enhance toluene adsorption, which provides a reference for the development of more efficient catalysts in the future.

Toxic heavy metals As(V) and Cr(VI) removal from water environment has becoming more and more urgent due to their adverse health effect. In this study, the flowerlike Ce/Fe bimetallic oxides (CFBO), which combined the superiority of three-dimensionally (3D) hierarchical architectures and bimetallic synergistic effect, were innovatively designed and synthesized via one-step facile template-free hydrothermal method. Compared with pure iron oxides (PIO), the obtained CFBO exhibited excellent performance for As(V) and Cr(VI) removal, and the maximum adsorption capacities toward As(V) and Cr(VI) increased from 49.09 mg/g to 164.94 mg/g and 38.07 mg/g to 127.42 mg/g, respectively. Both As(V) and Cr(VI) removal efficiency decreased with an increasing solution pH due to the pH zpc of CFBO, but exhibited slightly change with coexisting anions except for SiO 3 2− and PO 4 3− ions. Combined results of FT-IR and XPS, it was concluded that the abundant hydroxyl groups existed on the surface of CFBO played a key role in the high uptake of As(V) and Cr(VI), and subsequently formed inner-sphere surface complexes. Attractively, the remarkable removal efficiency of As(V)/Cr(VI) in column experiments revealed that the CFBO had great potential for practical application.

A sensitive approach of capillary electrophoresis coupled with field-amplified sample injection and transient isotachophoresis was developed for the simultaneous determination of two β-blockers: sotalol and metoprolol. In this dual focusing technique, the samples were prepared via only dissolution in ultrapure water and then injected electrokinetically. Phosphate acted as both the background electrolyte and the leading electrolyte. Its optimized concentration was 80 mM. A total of 25 mM of glycine was used as the terminating electrolyte. Under optimum conditions, good separation of sotalol and metoprolol was achieved within 10 min. In comparison with the conventional method, the sensitivity enhancement factors were up to 1031 and 919 for sotalol and metoprolol, respectively. The proposed method was employed in the determination of sotalol and metoprolol in spiked human urine samples. The limits of detection and limits of quantitation obtained via ultraviolet detection were 5 and 12 ng/mL, respectively, for sotalol, and 10 and 25 ng/mL, respectively, for metoprolol. The intraday repeatability values were lower than 2.7 and 1.7% for peak area and migration time, respectively. The assay is a simple and efficient strategy with potential for application in clinical and biochemical laboratories for monitoring sotalol and metoprolol.

Formaldehyde, a common indoor air pollutant, poses a
serious threat
to human health. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop highly
selective and sensitive formaldehyde gas sensors that operate at room
temperature. Doping with rare-earth elements is an effectively proven
strategy for optimizing the gas-sensing performance at room temperature.
This study developed a method to modify ZnO derived from ZIF-8 by
doping it with the rare-earth element cerium (Ce). The Ce-doped ZnO
(ZCO) series of sensors inherit the shell-and-core architecture derived
from the ZIF-8 precursor, featuring a high specific surface area that
provides support for gas-sensing reactions. Additionally, Ce doping
induces the formation of more oxygen vacancies, thereby enhancing
the formaldehyde adsorption. Among these, the ZCO-2 gas sensor exhibits
the best formaldehyde sensing properties at room temperature, with
a responsiveness of 1006 for 500 ppm formaldehyde (77.4 times that
of a pure ZnO gas sensor) and a response/recovery time of 9/3 s. Because
of the high response value, fast response/recovery time, excellent
selectivity, repeatability, and stability of this gas sensor, it has
a very promising prospect in practical applications.

Cerium-based
composite oxides have been intensively investigated
for the elimination of elemental mercury (Hg 0 ) from natural
gas and flue gas. Because of distinct operational conditions, the
required types of active oxygen species in composite oxides differ
substantially between these two atmospheric environments. Nevertheless,
the diversity of oxygen species has led to considerable debate regarding
the active sites responsible for the Hg 0 removal. The exploration
of these oxygen species is essential as it directly guides the rational
design of active sites in sorbents. In this work, we designed and
synthesized sorbents with different oxygen species and systematically
investigated the contributions of these oxygen species in the Hg 0 removal reaction. Cu–Mn–Ce (CMC) composite
oxides were successfully prepared by the coprecipitation method. Characterization
results indicate that the incorporation of Cu and Mn ions into the
CeO 2 lattice indeed significantly increases the concentration
of oxygen vacancies and releasable lattice oxygen. The Hg 0 removal efficiencies of CMC for natural gas and flue gas can be
maintained above 90.0% and 99.0%, respectively, even under a high
gas hourly space velocity of 480,000 h –1 . Furthermore,
CMC exhibits superior cyclic stability and high SO 2 resistance
for Hg 0 removal. Combined with the results from adsorption
tests and characterization, it can be concluded that the surface-active
oxygen species determine the catalytic oxidation and adsorption efficiency
of Hg 0 , while the releasable lattice oxygen species ensure
the continuous supply of active oxygen under extremely oxygen-deficient
conditions.

To enable rapid and reliable on-site monitoring of organophosphorus pesticides a novel portable dual-mode biosensor has been developed which integrates electrochemical and colorimetric detection into a single freeze-dried bioactive capsule. This innovative design supports instrument-free operation and provides dual-signal cross-validation. The sensor is based on a newly synthesized Mn/Ce bimetallic metal-organic framework (MOF) nanozyme with high oxidase-like activity, co-immobilized with acid phosphatase (ACP) within a mannitol- and sucrose-stabilized lyophilized capsule to ensure long-term stability and field readiness. In the presence of malathion, the pesticide selectively inhibits ACP, thereby restoring the MOF's catalytic activity and enabling the oxidation of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB). The resulting signal is detected both visually and through chronoamperometry after conversion to a yellow diimine product. This approach achieves a wide linear detection range of 1–2000 nM and an exceptionally low detection limit of 0.06 nM for malathion, along with high accuracy evidenced by recoveries of 93.31%-104.03% in real water samples. This work establishes a field-deployable and user-friendly sensing platform that combines innovative material design with integrated dual-mode detection, offering a robust and practical strategy for on-site environmental monitoring. Efficient tar conversion is essential for reliable biomass gasification and downstream hydrogen production. Yolk–shell catalysts, which confine active metals within an inert shell, show strong resistance to sintering and carbon deposition during tar reforming, but their catalytic efficiency still requires improvement. In this work, promoter-modified yolk–shell Ni@SiO 2 catalysts incorporating Zr, Ce, and Fe were developed for the steam reforming of toluene as a model tar compound. Among the promoters, Ce showed the most significant enhancement, achieving 100% toluene conversion at 650 °C and a steam-to-carbon ratio of 2, with stable performance maintained for 60 h of continuous operation, outperforming the Fe- and Zr-doped catalysts. Mechanistic studies showed that Ce promotion enhanced both activity and stability. TPD-MS results suggested that the introduction of Ce increased the concentration of oxygen vacancies, which promoted H 2 O adsorption on Ce-related sites while preserving metallic Ni sites for toluene activation. Meanwhile, the cracking and reforming temperatures decreased from 315 °C and 398 °C to 220 °C and 262 °C, respectively. In situ DRIFTS identified benzyl alcohol, benzoic acid, and maleic acid as key surface intermediates. These results demonstrate that combining yolk–shell confinement with Ce-induced oxygen vacancy engineering is an effective strategy for stable tar reforming.

Prolonged use of clear aligners promotes bacterial colonization and biofilm formation, which can compromise orthodontic outcomes. There is a clear clinical demand for approaches that can suppress pathogenic activity while preserving the fundamental functional and material characteristics of the aligners. To address this need, a novel strategy of fabricating metal–organic framework (MOF) coatings on aligners was adopted. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as promising antibacterial coating materials by combining antimicrobial metal ions with biocompatible organic ligands. Three distinct porphyrin-based MOFs (Ag-, Cu-, and Ce-TCPP) were synthesized and fabricated as coatings on clear aligner surfaces via a coordination-driven self-assembly approach. The coated aligners were comprehensively assessed in vitro to determine their antibacterial performance, anti-inflammatory potential, biocompatibility, and key physical characteristics. Among the three coatings, Ag-TCPP showed the most favorable overall antibacterial and anti-biofilm performance in the present experimental system and facilitated macrophage polarization toward an anti-inflammatory M2-like phenotype. Ag-TCPP exhibited a significant inhibition zone of 6.75 ± 0.25 mm and reduced biofilm biomass by 72.2%. All MOF coatings exhibited excellent biocompatibility, and their application did not compromise the aligners’ mechanical integrity or aesthetic properties (light transmittance). This study reports the successful development of a novel metal–organic framework (MOF)-based coating strategy for clear aligners. Among the formulations investigated, the Ag-TCPP coating exhibited outstanding antibacterial and immunomodulatory performance while maintaining the critical mechanical integrity and aesthetic qualities of the aligner. The findings of this work offer a practical approach to designing multifunctional orthodontic devices that may reduce biofilm-related complications and improve clinical outcomes.

The global transition toward low carbon energy systems has intensified the demand for renewable H 2 and cleaner syngas production. Biomass steam gasification is a promising route, but tar formation and catalyst deactivation still limit its practical application. Herein, Pr 1– x Ce x FeO 3 supported on calcined dolomite was developed for staged biomass steam gasification to couple H 2 production with tar reforming. Statistical screening identifies gasification temperature, Ce substitution level, and steam flow rate as the dominant factors controlling H 2 formation. Under single-factor conditions, Pr 0.6 Ce 0.4 FeO 3 /CD shows the best performance, giving 44.33 vol% H 2 , a total gas yield of 1.51 Nm 3 /kg biomass, a syngas yield of 1.10 Nm 3 /kg biomass, and a syngas fraction of 72.77 vol%. Tar conversion is optimal near 850 °C, where the dry tar yield decreases to 22.75 g/kg biomass, while heavy polycyclic aromatics and >C13 compounds account for 0.79% and 4.14% of the total gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) peak area, respectively. Response surface optimization gives an optimum at 810 °C, x = 0.4, and a steam flow rate of 1.2 mL/min, with an experimental H 2 fraction of 46.22 vol%. Structural and surface analyses indicate that moderate Ce substitution preserves the perovskite framework while regulating defect formation, surface oxygen species, and Fe/Ce/Pr redox behavior. Cycling deactivation is mainly associated with carbonaceous deposits, Fe migration, CaO carbonation, and structural densification. This work provides a feasible perovskite dolomite strategy for integrated tar reforming and production of syngas rich in H 2 from biomass.

To clarify the role of metal dopants in low-temperature NH3-SCR of NO, FeMnTiOxcatalysts were synthesized by coprecipitation and separately modified with Ce, Co, or W. The catalysts were evaluated for NO conversion, separate O2/H2O switching response and dry-feed time-on-stream stability and characterized by XRD, SEM, N2adsorption–desorption, XPS, H2-TPR and NH3-TPD. Ce doping at Ce/Mn = 0.3 suppressed TiO2crystallization, increased the BET surface area from 136 to 231 m2g−1and the pore volume from 0.19 to 0.58 cm3g−1, raised the Mn4+/Mn3+ratio from 0.70 to 1.25, and increased the medium-strong-acid relative peak area from 555.4 to 1293.2 a.u. FeMnCe0.3TiOxmaintained at least 90% NO conversion from 140 to 360 °C, gave 75% conversion at 400 °C, and averaged 97.4% during a 40 h dry-feed test at 350 °C. The results show that the superior Ce-modified catalyst arises from the combined regulation of texture, surface redox balance and acidity.
