Construction of AuNPs/h-BN nanocomposites by using gold as interfacial electron transfer mediator with highly efficient degradation for levofloxacin hydrochloride and hydrogen generation

Yangqing He,Na Xu,Lucas Binnah Junior,Xing Hao,Binghua Yao,Qian Yang,Dongjie Liu,Zhanying Ma

Construction of semiconductor-assisted noble metal nanocomposites has been approved as an efficient strategy to achieve promising photocatalysts. In this paper, highly efficient AuNPs/h-BN nanocomposites have been fabricated by loading gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) as interfacial electron transfer mediators onto the hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets (h-BN). The SEM and HRTEM images, together with XPS analysis revealed that AuNPs were successfully deposited onto the surface of h-BN and the layered heterojunctions were generated between AuNPs and h-BN. The optimum 15%AuNPs/h-BN nanocomposites exhibit dramatically enhanced photocatalytic performance for degradation of levofloxacin hydrochloride with 84.4% removal rate, and hydrogen evolution of 61.15 μmol within 5 h. It is almost 4 and 61 times higher than that of pure h-BN, respectively. In addition, this is the first time using h-BN based material to evaluate the elimination efficiency of levofloxacin hydrochloride. The corresponding enhanced mechanism for 15%AuNPs/h-BN can be attributed to the effective interfacial electron-hole pairs separation and migration between h-BH and AuNPs and its surface Plasmon absorption (SPA). Moreover, the possible decomposition pathways for levofloxacin hydrochloride are proposed according to the UPLC-MS analysis. Herein, we have provided a good example for removing antibiotic residues by using h-BN-based metal nanocomposites towards environmental remediation.

Impact of π-spacers of dithieno[3,2-f:2′,3′-h]quinoxaline-based organic dyes with three π-spacers on the solar cell performance

Xiao Tai,Huang Zu-Sheng,Wang Lingyun,Cao Derong

Three novel dithieno[3,2- f :2′,3′- h ]quinoxaline-based organic dyes ( IQ-C, IQ-D and IQ-F ) with three π-spacers were synthesized and developed for dye sensitized solar cells, where dithieno[3,2- f :2′,3′- h ]quinoxaline was used as electron-withdrawing π-spacers, and 2,3-diphenylquinoxaline or dibenzo[ a,c ]phenazine as auxiliary electron-withdrawing π-spacers. The dye IQ-D with 2,3-diphenylquinoxaline as auxiliary electron-withdrawing π-spacer exhibited higher photocurrent ( J sc ) and photovoltage ( V oc ) than that of the dye IQ-C with 2,3-bis(4-(octyloxy)phenyl)quinoxaline as the additional electron-withdrawing π-spacer, due to the larger adsorption amount of IQ-D . The dye IQ-F with a rigid conjugated dibenzo[ a,c ]phenazine as additional electron-withdrawing π-spacer showed the highest efficiency of 6.54% under AM 1.5 G irradiation. It was demonstrated that the π-spacers influence the photovoltaic performance of the dithieno[3,2- f :2′,3′- h ]quinoxaline-based organic dyes significantly. The results indicated that the dyes with three π-spacers are promising candidates for efficient dye-sensitized solar cells.

Does non-negligible aluminum in SCMs play a positive role in the resistance of aluminum-rich C-A-S-H materials to chloride attack?

Wang Aoxuan,Fang Yuan,Wang Xianfeng,Zheng Dapeng,Yang Haibin,Cao Xiangpeng,Zhang Zuhua,Xing Feng

With the increasing use of aluminum-rich (Al-rich) supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs), clarifying the roles of aluminum in C-A-S-H gels and in surplus Al-rich phases is critical for assessing chloride resistance. An Al-rich C-A-S-H material was synthesized under precise stoichiometric conditions and exposed to accelerated chloride ingress for up to 120 days. The evolution of phase assemblage, gel chemistry and physicochemical properties was monitored during the exposure. A time-dependent model was developed to describe chloride ingress and binding. Chloride ion binding in the Al-rich C-A-S-H occurred through both chemical solidification in Friedel’s salt and physical adsorption, with physical adsorption on C-A-S-H surfaces being dominant, accounting for approximately 60–70% of total bound chloride. The Al-rich phase primarily acted as a “reservoir,” releasing Ca 2+ and Al 3+ which facilitated the formation of Friedel’s salt and promoted the subsequent formation of C-A-S-H gel. Furthermore, the subsequent re-incorporation of aluminum into the C-A-S-H gel under chloride leading to a partial transformation from cross-linked to non-cross-linked silicate chains. This structural evolution is accompanied by a marked micromechanical degradation, with the Young’s modulus decreasing from 11.1 to 6.9 GPa under highly accelerated, severe exposure conditions. Overall, these results provide a time-resolved mechanistic picture of how C-A-S-H gel and surplus Al phases co-evolve under chloride attack, offering a new basis for the durability design of SCM-rich cementitious composites.

Internal electric field engineering regulated ionic liquid-functionalized h-BN/g-C3N4 heterojunctions for the solvent-free direct oxidation of cyclohexane to adipic acid

Kexin Li,Bin He,Huanghao Ning,Ruiyi Yan,Ruirui Wang,Ruirui Zhang,Ruixia Liu

The highly selective and direct oxidation of cyclohexane to adipic acid (AA) using molecular oxygen under solvent-free conditions represents a “dream reaction” in industrial catalysis, yet is severely hampered by the inherent chemical inertness of C-H bond and the challenging activation of O 2 . Addressing this grand challenge, we report a non-metal heterointerface engineering strategy to construct an advanced B/F-doped h-BN/g-C 3 N 4 heterojunction catalyst (known as BN/CN-BF 4 ) via a facile synergistic ultrasonication and thermal treatment utilizing the ionic liquid. The resulting BN/CN-BF 4 exhibits a powerfully ability to regulate interfacial electronic microenvironment, as evidenced by spectroscopic, electrochemical analysis, and DFT calculations, which reveal a type-II staggered band alignment and an internal electric field (IEF) formation across the heterojunction. This precisely engineered heterointerface achieved a remarkable breakthrough in catalytic performance, yielding a high cyclohexane conversion of 18.8% with an unprecedented selectivity for AA reaching 51.3% (a significant advancement over the typical 3%-5% conversion) in solvent-free system. Mechanistic investigations established a multi-step synergistic catalytic mechanism that B-N sites and H-bonding facilitate the initial C-H bond adsorption and activation; simultaneously, the IEF-driven directional electron transfer and C-F bond formation significantly accelerate the activation of O 2 to generate highly reactive oxygen species, steering the reaction pathway directly towards the terminal product, adipic acid. This work provides a novel strategy for enhancing industrial selective oxidation by manipulating the interfacial electronic microenvironment with IEF, offering a promising route for advanced solvent-free and metal-free selective oxidation catalysts.

Radical-induced β-H elimination through metal-support charge transfer in Ru(OH)x/C catalyst for enhanced lignin oxidative depolymerization in aqueous phase

Zhen Zhang,Quanxiao Dong,Yingqi Cui,Dan Wu,Armin Rezayan,Tianliang Lu,Renfeng Nie,Xiaoqin Si,Jianshe Wang,Chunbao Xu,Yongsheng Zhang

Catalytic oxidative depolymerization of lignin is an important strategy for producing valuable oxygen-functionalized monoaromatic compounds. However, this process is less efficient over heterogeneous catalysts due to the slow rate-determining step of selective oxidation of secondary alcohol (C α -OH to C α =O) in β-O-4 lignin linkages. Herein, a facile and efficient Ru(OH) x /C catalyst was developed for the oxidative depolymerization of lignin model compounds and real lignin in aqueous phase using molecular oxygen as oxidant. Extensive characterizations revealed that molecular oxygen abstracts electrons from the conductive carbon matrix to generate superoxide radicals (•O 2 – ), which are subsequently converted to hydroperoxide radicals (HOO•) in the presence of water. The C α -OH in the β-O-4 linkages first reacts with Ru-OH to form a Ru-O-C(H)- metal alkoxide intermediate, which then undergoes β-H elimination with the help of HOO• to generate H 2 O 2 and surface Ru-O-C•- species. Hydrolysis of Ru-O-C•- leads to the generation of C α =O products and the regeneration of Ru-OH sites. Different from the traditional Ru(OH) x -catalyzed alcohol dehydration mechanism in which Ru abstracts β-H to form Ru-H, in this case, the β-H in the Ru-alkoxide intermediate is eliminated by the hydroperoxide radicals rather than Ru, avoiding the formation of inert Ru-H species, thereby accelerating the dehydrogenation of C α -OH to C α =O. Electrochemical measurements further confirmed the charge transfer from Ru(OH) x to carbon during alcohol oxidation, demonstrating that electron donation by alcohol occurs on Ru(OH) x , while electron abstraction by O 2 occurs on the carbon. The free-radical-involved β-H elimination reaction pathway endows Ru(OH) x /C with superior catalytic oxidation activity in the aqueous phase compared with traditional metal oxides supported Ru(OH) x (e.g. SiO 2 , Al 2 O 3 , TiO 2 ), and provides a fundamental basis for the rational design of aqueous phase oxidation catalysts.

Synergistic enhancement of anisotropic thermal transport flexible polymer composites filled with multi-layer graphene (mG) and mussel-inspiring modified hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN)

Zheng Su,Hua Wang,Xianzhu Ye,Konghu Tian,Weiqi Huang,Jing He,Yulan Guo,Xingyou Tian

In this work, we presented novel cycloaliphatic epoxy resin composites filled with multi-layer graphene (mG)/hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) with high thermal conductivity and good electrical insulating. Firstly, the h-BN platelets were modified by mussel-inspired method with dopamine chemistry to obtain the modified filler h-BN@PDA. And the attachment of polydopamine molecule improved the interfacial adhesion between polymer matrix and filler. Secondly, the mG with fixed content was mixed with h-BN@PDA and then the hybrid filler mG/h-BN@PDA was added to the cycloaliphatic epoxy resin to obtain the polymer composites . Because of the high aspect of the filler, low viscosity of the polymer matrix , and assistance of the gravity force, the hybrid filler would stack alignment. It was found that the hybridization of the filler and alignment of the hybrid filler resulted in the enhancement of properties of the composites such as the thermal decomposition, mechanical (tensile strength = 5.50 MPa), thermal (through-plane ∼ 1.27 W/m K, in-plane ∼ 1.31 W/m K) and electrical insulating (electrical conductivity < 1.5 × 10 −10  S/cm) properties. The obtained composites could be applied in thermal management area.

Impact of Exposure of Dairy Cow Feed to Polystyrene Microplastics on 24 h In Vitro Rumen Fermentation Responses, Microbiota Biodegradation Potential and Metabolic Pathways

Xitong Guan,Haokai Ma,Rui Liu,Yiou Xu,Diene Gnagna,Xiujie Yin,Yonggen Zhang,Yang Li

Microplastic pollution is rising worldwide and may harm both animals and people. Dairy cows rely on a large stomach compartment, called the rumen, to break down feed with the help of many microbes, and this process produces gases and acids that reflect healthy digestion. In this study, we tested whether tiny plastic particles made of polystyrene, in different sizes and amounts, change rumen digestion and whether rumen microbes can break these plastics down. We found that exposure to these particles reduced fermentation activity, shown by lower gas production and lower levels of volatile fatty acids, and the negative effects became stronger as the amount of microplastics increased. At the same time, higher amounts and larger particles increased the activity of some digestive enzymes, suggesting a stress response in the microbial system. Microplastics also lowered the abundance of certain microbes and changed the chemicals produced during digestion. After 24 h, the amount of microplastic particles decreased, indicating that rumen microbes can partially degrade them and generate small chemical products that could further disturb rumen balance. These findings help explain how microplastics may influence ruminant health and suggest a possible biological route to reduce microplastic contamination. Microplastic pollution is increasingly serious worldwide, threatening human and animal health. The cow rumen is a key organ for nutrient digestion and absorption, and its fermentation is closely related to rumen microorganisms. Here, we investigated how polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) with varying particle sizes and concentrations affect rumen fermentation and the biodegradability of PS-MPs by rumen fermentation. The results reveal that exposure to PS-MPs lowered gas production and gas concentrations, as well as volatile fatty acid content, and these decreases were positively correlated with PS-MP concentration. However, higher PS-MP concentration and larger particle size increased the activity of carboxymethyl cellulose, β-glucosidase, and xylanase. Furthermore, PS-MP exposure reduced the abundance of certain rumen microorganisms and altered metabolic pathways and metabolites linked to PS-MP biodegradation. It was also found that PS-MP content decreased significantly after 24 h fermentation. Therefore, PS-MPs can inhibit rumen fermentation by affecting the rumen microbiome, and rumen microorganisms and their secreted enzymes can biodegrade PS-MPs to produce styrene and derivatives; such small molecules may further disrupt rumen homeostasis, thereby affecting lactation performance. In addition, rumen microbial degradation of PS-MPs provides a new idea to resolve future microplastic contamination challenges.

Synthesis of Benzo[1,2-b:3,4-b′:5,6-b″]trithiophenes via C–H Thienannulation for High Performance Thermoelectric Composites with Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

Kexin Xu,Yifan Lv,Xinrui Cui,Wenyu Lai,Cun-Yue Guo,Baolin Li

As a type of organic small molecule (OSMs), the introduction of sulfur atoms in fused-ring thiophenes can reduce the dihedral angle between fused rings, which helps to form planar structures and makes it easier to form tightly packed crystal structures, creating more continuous paths for charge transfer. Therefore, they have aroused widespread research interest. However, little research has been conducted on benzo[1,2-b:3,4-b′:5,6-b″]trithiophenes (BTTs), and their simple and efficient syntheses still need to be urgently developed. Herein, we have developed a synthetic approach for BTTs via C–H thienannulation. This protocol features streamlined domino synthetic procedures, eliminating the requirement for the introduction of halogen functional groups, catalysts, and additives. BTTs exhibit planar structures, enabling tight crystal packing that creates a continuous pathway for charge transport. These structural attributes endow BTTs with substantial promise for application in organic electronic materials. Therefore, 2,5,8-tris(4-propylphenyl)benzo[1,2-b:3,4-b′:5,6-b″]trithiophene ((C3-Ph)3-BTT) and its brominated derivative ((C3-Ph)3-Br3-BTT) were investigated as organic small molecules (OSMs) for doping with single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) to fabricate OSM/SWCNT composite thermoelectric materials. The composite films exhibited excellent thermoelectric performance, achieving a maximum power factor of 515.23 ± 3.54 μW m–1 K–2 at room temperature. This value represents the highest reported power factor for thiophene derivative/SWCNT thermoelectric composites, marking a significant advancement in the development of high-performance composite thermoelectric materials based on thiophene derivatives.

Mussel-inspired encapsulation of poly(pyrogallol-tetraethylenepentamine) resin into mesoporous MSU-H matrix and its rapid removal feature for Congo red from aquatic environment

Qiang Liu,Qiying Yang,Qiuyue Zhang,Fei Lv,Aiyuan Cheng,Hanxiao Liu,Shuanhong Ma,Likai Wang,Qinze Liu

Removing organic dyes from polluted water by mesoporous polymeric composite has recently attracted intensive attentions. Herein, the mesoporous poly(pyrogallol-tetraethylenepentamine)/MSU-H (PPTA/MSU-H) adsorbent was tapped for the capture of Congo red (CR) in aquatic environment via mussel-inspired encapsulation strategy. Many characterizations ( e.g. FT-IR, SEM, BET, etc ) are employed to confirm the successful decoration of PPTA resin. Effects of composite components, initial concentrations, environmental temperatures, adsorbent dosages, initial pH values, and foreign ions on the removal of CR by PPTA/MSU-H- x composites have been investigated successively. At optimal conditions of process variables, PPTA/MSU-H-20 exhibits the highest R % value (94.79 %) and reaches adsorption equilibrium at 180 min. The adsorption behavior of the representative adsorbent is matched well with the pseudo-second-order model, meaning one CR molecule binds with two capture sites. Furthermore, it indicates a monolayer homogeneous adsorption on PPTA/MSU-H-20 with the maximum theoretical capacity of 222 mg g −1 according to the well fitted Langmuir model. The removal mechanism of CR may be ascribed to hydrogen bonding, π-π stacking, electrostatic attraction, pore filling effects, and addition reaction. Overall, results reveal that mesoporous PPTA decorated adsorbent has a rewritable refabrication character and excellent specificity for the anionic dye purification in polluted water.

Identification of the Molecular Structure of Mandelic Acid in Solid and Aqueous Solutions by Raman Spectra in the C-H/C-D Stretching Region

Zhiqiang Wang,Siqi Duan,Bin Fang,Zhenxiang Liu,Ruiting Zhang,Lin Ma,Ke Lin

Identifying the molecular structures of drugs are important for understanding the molecular interactions between drugs and proteins. Especially in situ measurement of drug structures that interact with proteins in aqueous solutions or cells is a challenge. In this work, mandelic acid (MA) was used as a model molecule to prove that the Raman spectra in the C-H or C-D stretching region can be employed to identify the molecular structure through theoretical and experimental Raman spectra and molecular dynamics simulations methods. Using the experimental and theoretical Raman spectra of MA rotamers, C α -H was determined to be trans (higher than 2950 cm −1 ) and nontrans (below 2950 cm −1 ) from the α-OH group for solid DL-MA (~2961 cm −1 ) and D -MA (~2898 cm −1 ), respectively, which agreed well with the results from X-ray diffraction. Molecular dynamic (MD) simulations and Raman band of the MA aqueous solution revealed that the C α -H group was determined to be nontrans from the α-OH group, the structure of the carboxyl group was cis (~2910 cm −1 ), the carboxyl group was roughly vertical to the C α -benzene bond, and the benzene ring was approximately coplanar with the C α -H bond. Our work also paves that the Raman spectra in the C-D or C-H stretching region could be used as fingerprint regions to study the structure of drugs.

Atomic Fe–N4/C in Flexible Carbon Fiber Membrane as Binder-Free Air Cathode for Zn–Air Batteries with Stable Cycling over 1000 h

Leping Yang,Xu Zhang,Lingxiao Yu,Jianhua Hou,Zhen Zhou,Ruitao Lv

Noble-metal-free, durable, and high-efficiency electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction and evolution reaction (ORR/OER) are vital for rechargeable Zn–air batteries (ZABs). Herein, a flexible and free-standing carbon fiber membrane immobilized with atomically dispersed Fe–N 4 /C catalysts (Fe/SNCFs-NH 3 ) is synthesized and used as air cathode for ZABs. The intertwined fibers with hierarchical nanopores facilitate the gas transportation, electrolyte infiltration and electron transfer. The large specific surface area exposes a high concentration of Fe–N 4 /C sites embedded in the carbon matrix. Modulation of local atomic configurations by sulfur doping in Fe/SNCFs-NH 3 catalyst leads to excellent ORR and enhanced OER activities. The as-synthesized Fe/SNCFs-NH 3 catalyst demonstrates a positive half-wave potential of 0.89 V and a small Tafel slope of 70.82 mV dec –1 , outperforming the commercial Pt/C (0.86 V/94.74 mV dec –1 ) and most reported M–N x /C (M = Fe, Co, Ni) catalysts. Experimental characterizations and theoretical calculations uncover the crucial role of S doping in regulating ORR and OER activities. The liquid-state ZABs with Fe/SNCFs-NH 3 catalyst as air cathode deliver a large peak power density of 255.84 mW cm –2 and long-term cycle durability over 1000 h. Solid-state ZAB shows stable cycling at various flat/bent/flat states, demonstrating great prospects in flexible electronic device applications.

Self-floating g-C3N4/h-BN/Au photo-thermal catalysts with unprecedented thermostability at solar-activated heating condition for reusable degradation of organic pollutants

Chang Wang,Shihao Zhou,Qingqiang Cui,Mengya Zhang,Linqi Zheng,Shuang Li,Xiangdong Liu,Ming Chen

Photo-thermal catalytic (PTC) degradation as an ideal candidate for wastewater treatment is yet suffering from the unsatisfied recyclability due to the thermal effect-exacerbated serious photocorrosion of semiconductor-based catalysts. Based on polymeric graphite carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) hybridized with antioxidative hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) and grafted with stable Au nanoparticles (NPs), we provide thermostable g-C 3 N 4 /h-BN/Au nano-catalysts for high-efficient degradation of organic dyes at solar-activated heating condition. The fantastic PTC activity with optimal degradation rate up to ∼ 0.30 min −1 is far better than most mainstream hybrid catalysts. The unprecedented thermal recyclability is convincingly verified by consecutive 10 repeated tests within 500 min measurements under solar-driven heating condition (∼60 °C), wherein the negligible drop of degradation efficiency is only ∼ 0.2% lower than pristine one. The ingenious self-floating PTC membranes can be conveniently established by immobilizing the resultant nano-catalysts into bio-carbon porous frames and viscous bacterial nano-celluloses, facilitating practical wastewater decontamination in real-world scenarios.
