Dual Hydrogen Production System: Synergistic Effect of Ru and Ce Over Cu2O Nanotubes Drives Hydrogen Evolution and Formaldehyde Oxidation

Hongjie Yu,Lijun Zhang,Shaojian Jiang,Wenke Liu,Kai Deng,Ziqiang Wang,You Xu,Hongjing Wang,Liang Wang

Water splitting for hydrogen production is limited by high cell voltage and low energy conversion efficiencies due to the slow kinetic process of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Here, an electrolytic system is constructed in which the cathode and anode co-release H 2 at ultra-low input voltage using formaldehyde oxidation reaction (FOR) instead of OER. The prepared RuCe co-doped Cu 2 O nanotubes on copper foam (RuCe-Cu 2 O/CF) are used as electrode materials for the HER-FOR system. A current density of 0.8 A cm −2 is achieved at 0.55 V, and a stable hydrogen production process is realized at both the cathode and anode. Density functional theory (DFT) studies show that the synergistic effect of Ru and Ce drives: i) the d -band center of RuCe-Cu 2 O/CF away from the Fermi energy level; ii) the energy barrier for the C─H cracking of the H 2 C(OH)O * intermediate in FOR is lowered, which promotes the formation of H 2 from H * , and iii) ΔG H* tends to 0 (−0.1 eV), optimizing the reaction kinetics of HER. This work provides a new design for an efficient catalyst for dual hydrogen production systems from water splitting.

Catalytic hydrotreatment of fast pyrolysis liquids from Pine wood using Ru-based catalysts supported on nitrogen-doped carbon materials

Yunhui Xia,Nan Xi,Xinyang Yu,Maohua Luo,Shi Chen,Qinglian Wang,Yixiong Lin,Rong Wang,Hao Li,Jun Yue,Chen Yang,Wang Yin,Ting Qiu

Catalytic hydrotreatment is one of the promising routes for upgrading pyrolysis liquids (PLs) to intermediates that can be co-fed with vacuum gas oil for FCC refinery. Among all the factors, catalysts are always crucial in catalytic hydrotreatment of PLs as hydrogenation and repolymerization reactions occur in parallel. Therefore, catalysts with sufficient hydrogenation activity are generally required to enhance the hydrogenation reaction and to inhibit the repolymerization reaction of the thermally liable compounds in PLs. Among all noble metal catalysts tested, Ru/C catalysts showed a better performance than other catalysts in terms of the oil yield and deoxygenation level. However, a clear repolymerization was observed during catalytic hydrotreatment of PLs using Ru/C catalysts, especially during mild hydrotreatment, thus there is still ample room for their activity improvement. Here, a series of Ru-based catalysts supported on nitrogen-doped carbon materials (NC) and activated carbon (AC) were prepared. The catalytic performance was evaluated for hydrotreatment of PLs in a batch autoclave (250 °C, 8 MPa H 2 , 4 h for mild hydrotreatment; 340 °C, 6 MPa H 2 , 4 h for deep hydrotreatment). The Ru catalyst supported on nitrogen-doped carbon materials, obtained by the polyol reduction method with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as the protective agent (Ru/NC (PVP)), showed a better performance (in terms of product oil properties) than the other catalysts investigated in this work, due to a good distribution of the ruthenium nanoparticles. For mild hydrotreatment the H/C ratio, O/C ratio and MCRT value were 1.42, 0.37 and 9.9 wt%, respectively. For deep hydrotreatment the H/C ratio, O/C ratio and MCRT value were 1.26, 0.16 and 4.6 wt%. The comparison with results published earlier for other hydrotreatment catalysts is satisfactory but also shows room for further improvement. GC–MS and 1 H NMR results showed that the contents of thermal liable components like aldehydes (16.7 %), ketones (24.3 %) and sugars (4.0 %) in PLs were quantitatively converted under mild hydrotreatment, while phenols and alkanes significantly increased from 35.9 %, 0 % to 49.1 %, 35.3 %, respectively, especially for deep hydrotreatment compared with PLs feed. The catalyst characterization revealed that Ru/NC (PVP) with the most uniform dispersion and the smallest average particle size (1.5 nm), rendered the best performance. These findings indicate that Ru/NC (PVP) catalyst is a promising candidate for the catalytic hydrotreatment of PLs.

A highly sensitive luminescent probe based on Ru(II)-bipyridine complex for Cu2+, l-Histidine detection and cellular imaging

Shi-Ting Zhang,Panpan Li,Caiyun Liao,Tingting Luo,Xingming Kou,Dan Xiao

A ruthenium(II) bipyridyl complex conjugated with functionalized Schiff base (RuA) has been synthesized and functioned as a luminescent probe. The luminescence of RuA was greatly quenched by Cu 2+ due to its molecular coordination with paramagnetic Cu 2+ . Subsequently, the addition of l -Histidine can turn on the luminescence of the RuA-Cu(II) ensemble, which can be attributed to the replacement of RuA in RuA-Cu(II) ensemble by l -Histidine. On the basis of the quenching and recovery of the luminescence of RuA, we proposed a rapid and highly sensitive on-off-on luminescent assay for sensing Cu 2+ and l -Histidine in aqueous solution. Under the optimal conditions, Cu 2+ and l -Histidine can be detected in the concentration range of 5 nM–9.0 μM and 50 nM–30 μM, respectively, and the corresponding detection limits were calculated to be 0.35 and 0.44 nM (S/N=3), separately. The proposed luminescent probe has been successfully utilized for the analysis of Cu 2+ and l -Histidine in real samples (drinking water and biological fluids). Furthermore, the probe revealed good photostability, low cytotoxicity and excellent permeability, making it a suitable candidate for cell imaging and labeling in vitro.

Modulating electronic structure and hydrogen bond network via asymmetric S-Ru-O interfaces for superior alkaline hydrogen oxidation catalysis

Chenggong Niu,Yi Liu,Shuqing Zhou,Heyang Liu,Linyu Chen,Jingya Guo,Tayirjan Taylor Isimjan,Xiulin Yang

Triggering structural asymmetry can induce charge redistribution and modify electronic structures, which is of great significance for the design of high-performance hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) electrocatalysts. Herein, we propose a dual anion-induced strategy to create an innovative RuS 2 -RuO 2 heterostructure featuring abundant S-Ru-O interfaces (RuS 2 -RuO 2 @C). This RuS 2 -RuO 2 @C demonstrates an impressive mass activity of 2.61 mA μ g R u - 1 and an exchange current density of 2.96 mA cm −2 , surpassing Pt/C and other comparative samples by over 20 times. Durability assessments confirm the superior stability of RuS 2 -RuO 2 @C, with only minimal performance loss during operation. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the asymmetric S-Ru-O configuration optimizes the interfacial electronic structure and shifts the d -band center closer to the Fermi level, effectively reducing the energy barrier of the rate-determining step (RDS) in the alkaline HOR process. Moreover, in situ attenuated total reflection surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy (ATR-SEIRAS) characteristics disclose the formation of a substantial hydrogen bond network at the S-Ru-O interface, which aids in the desorption of H 2 O ad and facilitates the vital Volmer step in the HOR pathway.

Self-supported Ru-Fe-Ox nanospheres as efficient electrocatalyst to boost overall water-splitting in acid and alkaline media

Mengfang Shang,Bowen Zhou,Huiqian Qiu,Yuecheng Gong,Liantao Xin,Weiping Xiao,Guangrui Xu,Chunlong Dai,Huadong Zhang,Zexing Wu,Lei Wang

Developing electrocatalysts with high activity and durability for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in both acidic and alkaline electrolytes remains challenging. In this study, we synthesize a self-supported ruthenium-iron oxide on carbon cloth (Ru-Fe-O x /CC) using solvothermal methods followed by air calcination. The morphology of the nanoparticle exposes numerous active sites vital for electrocatalysis. Additionally, the strong electronic interaction between Ru and Fe enhances electrocatalytic kinetics optimization. The porous structure of the carbon cloth matrix facilitates mass transport, improving electrolyte penetration and bubble release. Consequently, Ru-Fe-O x /CC demonstrates excellent catalytic performance, achieving low overpotentials of 32 mV and 28 mV for HER and 216 mV and 228 mV for OER in acidic and alkaline electrolytes, respectively. Notably, only 1.48 V and 1.46 V are required to reach 10 mA cm −2 for efficient water-splitting in both mediums, exhibiting remarkable stability. This research offers insights into designing versatile, highly efficient catalysts suitable for varied pH conditions.

Overturning CO2 Hydrogenation Selectivity from CH4 to CO by Strong Ru–FeOx Interaction Arising from a Multilayer Epitaxial Structure

Yuntao Qi,Bin Zhang,Dengrong Xue,Hui Zhang,Xiaoning Liu,Zhi Liu,Shichao Zhao,Zhuo Li,Fanchun Meng,Yong Qin

The catalytic conversion of CO2 to CO through hydrogenation has emerged as a promising strategy for CO2 utilization, given that CO serves as a valuable C1 platform compound for synthesizing liquid fuels and chemicals. However, the predominant formation of CH4 via deep hydrogenation over Ru-based catalysts poses challenges in achieving selective CO production. High reaction temperatures often lead to catalyst deactivation and changes in selectivity due to dynamic metal evolution or agglomeration, even with a classic strong metal–support interaction. Herein, we have developed a FeOx/Ru/Rutile multilayer epitaxial structure by depositing a FeOx layer onto the epitaxially grown RuO2 nanolayers on the surface of rutile nanoparticles. This multilayer epitaxial structure transformed into a structure in which Ru nanoparticles were decorated with FeOx layers with ultrastable strong metal-support interaction (SMSI). Subsequently, the FeOx decoration on Ru nanoparticles effectively shifted the dominant product from CH4 to 95% CO during CO2 hydrogenation. Remarkably, this catalyst exhibits exceptional stability and can be operated stably at 550 °C for a long time without apparent deactivation. Compared with the dynamic changes observed in supported Ru nanoparticles, the interaction between Ru and FeOx maintains their electronic states at different reaction temperatures. Furthermore, this Ru–FeOx interaction inhibits H2 activation capability, CO adsorption, and subsequent hydrogenation of CO. The transformation strategy employed here, which utilizes initial multilayer epitaxial structures, can be applied to construct SMSI to enhance metal catalysts’ catalytic performance.

Solid-state electrochemiluminescence sensor based on TiO2@CdSe and Ru(bpy)32+@Ag NPs for ultrasensitive detection of malathion

Huiling Li,Li Tian,Shuning Yang,Chao Li,Ruidan Li,Yujia Song,Yanjia Guo,Xuwen Li

To sensitively monitor trace-level of malathion (MAT) in vegetable samples, an ultrasensitive solid-state electrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensor was proposed based on TiO 2 @CdSe and Ru(bpy) 3 2+ @Ag NPs. In this system, the introduction of Ag NPs enhanced the initial ECL signal of Ru(bpy) 3 2+ - tripropylamine (TPrA). When TiO 2 @CdSe was introduced into the system, the ECL signal was further enhanced, which may be due to the synergistic effect of the two complexes. Based on the fact that the addition of MAT causes ECL strength to decrease, a ECL sensor for the ultrasensitive trace detection of MAT has been successfully established. Under the optimized conditions, a wide liner detection range of MAT concentrations from 4.0 × 10 −14 to 4.0 × 10 −9  mol L −1 and a low detection limit (S/N = 3) of 1.3 × 10 −14  mol L −1 were obtained. The ECL sensor has been applied to the detection of vegetable samples and satisfactory results were obtained.

ZIF-8 derived ZnO@NC supported Ru nanoparticles for efficient low-temperature hydrogenation of levulinic acid to γ-valerolactone

Xiaoqing Gao,Shanhui Zhu,Mei Dong,Hongyan Zheng,Yanfeng Xue,Xiaojing Cui,Yulan Niu,Weibin Fan

Highly efficient synthesis of valuable γ-valerolactone (GVL) by levulinic acid (LA) hydrogenation is of interest for biomass refinery, but it suffers from great challenge to design highly active Ru-based catalyst at low temperature. ZIF-8 derived ZnO@NC nanocomposite can firmly anchor Ru nanoparticles to create strong Ru-ZnO interfacial structure, as revealed by characterization techniques and DFT calculations. By optimizing Ru content and ZnO particle size, Ru/ZnO@NC achieved excellent reaction activity with a turnover frequency (TOF) of 6032 h −1 at low temperature of 40 °C, which is never reported before. After etching the accessible ZnO, the TOF value was significantly declined to 125 h −1 on Ru/ZnO@NC-HF owing to the lack of effective Ru-ZnO interface. DFT calculation results demonstrate that the Ru-ZnO interfacial structure can facilitate the activation of intermediate CH 3 CHOCH 2 CH 2 COOH* and remarkably decline the activation energy barrier of rate-determining step (CH 3 CHOCH 2 CH 2 COOH + H = HPA) from 1.28 eV to 0.82 eV, thus leading to excellent activity of LA hydrogenation at low temperature.

Nanocarbon Supporting Porous Porphyrin-Ru-Functionalized Vascular Grafts for Antioxidative Stress, Anti-inflammation, and Prorepair of Blood Vessel Injury

Ren Jianmei,Aini Guliyaer,Lei Xuelan,Yang Heng,Guo Jiusi,Zhou Hongju,Tan Yuting,Gao Yang,Cheng Chong,Qiu Li,Ma Lang

Vascular grafts are commonly used to treat acute injuries and chronic atherosclerotic diseases of the vasculature. However, the pathological environment of injured vessels is characterized by oxidative stress and severe inflammatory flares, which usually lead to insufficient vascular regeneration and poor pathological remodeling, with far from satisfactory graft results. Here, we innovatively engineered a nanocarbon supporting porous Ru-porphyrin-based nanobiocatalyst functionalized vascular graft (SPPorRu@PCL) via electrospinning technology. Our studies demonstrate that the SPPorRu@PCL has ultrafast and broad-spectrum reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging ability due to the highly active π-conjugated Ru–N catalytic site, π–π stacking effect, and porous structure of loaded SPPorRu, which synergistically enhances its electron transfer ability and catalytic kinetics. Strikingly, in vitro cellular experiments demonstrate that the SPPorRu@PCL is effective in alleviating oxidative stress, reducing damage of DNA and mitochondrial, and promoting cell adhesion for human umbilical vein endothelial cells in a high-ROS environment. Implantation of SPPorRu@PCL in vascular-injured rats further demonstrates its superior biocompatibility, anti-inflammatory and provascular repair capabilities. This work provides important insights into the application of the porous nanocarbon and the π-conjugated porphyrin-based Ru–N coordination nanobiocatalyst assembled on nanocarbons in catalytically scavenging ROS and offers new strategies to design high-performance artificial antioxidant functionalized vascular grafts for the treatment of blood vessel injury diseases. Lateral Coordination Sulfur-Modified Charge Asymmetry Cu–Ru Diatomic Catalyst for Efficient and Stable Electrochemical Nitrate Reduction to Ammonia

Yuanbo Yin,Liping Wang,Huishan Shang,Xilin Zhang,Wenxing Chen,Xiaoxin Zou

Double-atom catalysts (DACs) with asymmetric coordination are crucial for enhancing the benefits of electrochemical reduction of nitrate (NO3–) to ammonia (NH3) and advancing sustainable development; however, the rational design of DACs is still challenging. In this study, we synthesized atomically dispersed catalysts with lateral coordination sulfur-modified Cu–Ru sites (named N2S1Cu-RuN3/SNC). The abundant defects and low-electronegativity heteroatoms in the carbon-based framework endow the asymmetric local structure of N2S1Cu-RuN3 at the atomic level, which is confirmed by aberration-corrected electron microscopy and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). In electrocatalytic nitrate reduction, the N2S1Cu-RuN3/SNC shows a Faraday efficiency of 98.2% at −0.6 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). Benefiting from the charge tuning effect between the metal site and the lateral coordination sulfur atoms, the ammonia yield reaches 0.02919 mmol cm–2 h–1. Additionally, in situ XAS and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that Cu–Ru active sites in the asymmetric N2S1Cu-RuN3/SNC structure exhibit synergistic effects, modulating the adsorption of intermediates, lowering the energy barrier of key reaction steps, and enhancing the selectivity and yield of ammonia. This asymmetric bimetallic atomic catalyst facilitates deeper exploration of the precise synthesis and property modulation of atomic-scale materials.

Facile synthesis of Ru atom clusters on MXene nanosheets through gamma-ray radiation for plasma boosting hydrogen evolution reaction

Xueyan Que,Zeyu Zhang,Yicheng Wang,Junqing Bai,Jing Peng,Jiuqiang Li,Yue Wang,Maolin Zhai

Water electrolysis with limited hydrogen yield is the main method for producing green hydrogen, which shows enhancement when coupled with solar energy. MXenes are one of the promising materials with an intensity localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect for the utilization of infrared and visible wavelengths of the solar spectrum. In this work, Ru atom clusters were anchored on Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheets through gamma-ray radiation using hydrated electrons (eaq−) as the reducing agent and Ti3C2Tx itself as the oxidizing free radical scavenger to form Ru/Ti3C2Tx catalysts. The as-synthesized catalysts perform enhanced activity in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) across all pH ranges under 808 nm near infrared (NIR) light illumination because of the plasmonic effect of Ti3C2Tx nanosheets. Ru/Ti3C2Tx with only 2.40 wt% Ru exhibits the highest HER activity under NIR light illumination with a Tafel slope of 141 mV dec−1 and a current density enhancement of 3.56 mA cm−2 at an overpotential of 200 mV. This work demonstrates the effectiveness of gamma-ray radiation for synthesizing atomically dispersed electrocatalysts with enhanced HER performance when coupled with the illumination of infrared light.

Steering the electronic communication between Al/Ru bimetallic clusters in metal–organic framework composites for accelerating hydrogen evolution kinetics

Xueting Song,Haifeng Yang,Chenghua Zhang,Guizhi Zhang,Hong Wu,Youzhou He,Min Fu,Xingyan Liu,Siqi Li,Siping Wei

Synergistically modulating electron distribution between metal nodes in metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) is an effective strategy to improve the electrocatalytic performance of MOFs. Herein, a special bimetallic MOF composite (Al0.35/Ru0.15-TCPP-CNTs) was constructed by introducing highly dispersed Ru and Al co-existing in the MOF metal clusters and combining them with conductive carboxylic multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Notably, the catalyst exhibited excellent hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance, with an overpotential of as low as 32 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm−2 in acidic media, comparable to commercial Pt/C. Experimental results and density functional theory (DFT) calculations proved that a reasonable proportion of Al/Ru bimetallic clusters in MOFs and the loaded CNTs induced charge redistribution and cooperative electronic coupling, which not only optimized the adsorption energy of H intermediates (ΔGH*) and produced a possible hydrogen spillover effect, but also increased the specific surface area and facilitated electron/mass transfer. This work may provide an improved method and research idea for the study of MOF electrocatalysts at the atomic level.
