Construction of chiral ZnO/BMP-2 dual functional coating on the surface of Ti implants for anti-infection and enhancement of osseointegration

Yuan Fan,Haiyan Yao,Junchao Wei,Yipeng Hu

Titanium (Ti) implants are widely used in bone defect repair, however, postoperative infections and insufficient osseointegration would lead to implant failure. Therefore, it is much critical and necessary to construct antibacterial and osteogenic coatings on the surface of Ti implants to improve the successful rate of operation. Herein, D-penicillamine stabilized chiral ZnO nanoparticles (D-ZnO NPs) were prepared, which were loaded on the surface of Ti implants together with BMP-2 to construct a dual functional coating with antibacterial and osteogenic properties. The in vitro results demonstrated that the coating showed excellent antibacterial ability, and the antibacterial rates against S. mutans , E. coli and S. aureus were 86%, 98%, and 76%, respectively. Additionally, the coating could effectively induce macrophage polarization towards M2 phenotype, which modulated the local immune microenvironment. Furthermore, the introduction of bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) promoted osteogenesis, which may enhance the osseointegration of Ti implants. This study provides a novel strategy to address the challenges of Ti implants, and offer the solid theoretical foundation for expanding the clinical applications of multifunctional Ti implants materials.

A sustainable molten-salt synthesis of S-terminated Ti₂C MXene/FeSe₂ heterostructures toward exceptionally stable and high-capacity sodium-ion batteries

Guoxu Ni,Runye Hu,Qikai Wang,Wenwen Shi,Qiuhong Cui,Jun Yan

HF-free synthesis of FeSe₂@S-Ti₂C via Lewis acidic molten-salt etching. • Simultaneous Ti₂C termination, etching, and FeSe₂ anchoring in one step. • Strong interfacial coupling endows Ti₂C/FeSe₂ with metallic conductivity. • Ti₂C/FeSe₂ delivers high capacity, long life, and high rate for SIBs. • Synergistic Na-storage mechanism of FeSe₂@S-Ti₂C revealed by DFT and in situ EIS/DRT analyses. The development of high-performance anode materials is critical for advancing sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) toward practical applications. Herein, we report a novel FeSe 2 @S-Ti 2 C heterostructure synthesized via a safe and straightforward Lewis acidic molten salt etching strategy followed by in-situ selenization. This approach enables simultaneous etching of Ti 2 AlC MAX phase, surface termination with sulfur-containing groups, and uniform anchoring of FeSe 2 nanoparticles within the Ti 2 C MXene matrix, eliminating the need for hazardous HF or post-synthesis metal removal. The resulting heterostructure integrates multiple advantageous features: The highly conductive Ti₂C MXene framework accelerates the transport of Na + , while its structural robustness effectively accommodates the volume expansion caused by Na + deintercalation. S-containing surface terminations provide additional active sites that enhance Na + adsorption. Ultimately, the FeSe₂@S-Ti₂C anode demonstrates exceptional sodium-storage performance, characterized by a high reversible capacity of 397.6 mAh g −1 after 350 cycles at 1 A g −1 , superior rate capability (227.8 mAh g −1 at 5 A g −1 ), as well as robust full-cell performance with an initial Coulombic efficiency of 91.2% and a reversible capacity of 493.6 mAh g −1 following 500 cycles at 1 A g −1 . Density functional theory calculations further elucidate the underlying mechanism, revealing metallic conductivity, reduced Na + diffusion barrier (0.30 eV), and enhanced Na adsorption energy (−2.43 eV) in the heterostructure. This work presents a versatile and scalable strategy for constructing advanced MXene-based heterostructures, offering promising avenues for high-performance SIB anodes. Description : Lewis acidic molten salt etching enables one-pot synthesis of FeSe₂@S–Ti₂C heterostructures; the conductive MXene framework with S-terminations and interfacial coupling deliver fast Na + diffusion and robust sodium storage. Coupling Ti-assisted secondary-hydroxyl activation with H-regulated radical overoxidation control on WO3 photoanodes for highly selective glycerol to dihydroxyacetone conversion

Youheng Yao,Gaoxu Han,Yixuan Yao,Chuanjin Wang,Junshu Wu,Wenyuan Zhou,Yongli Li,Jinshu Wang

A TiCl 3 -based route enables H insertion and dispersed Ti sites on WO 3 photoanode. • Dispersed Ti sites favor secondary-hydroxyl activation and DHA formation. • H insertion suppresses free •OH species and mitigates DHA overoxidation. • (H,Ti)/WO 3 achieves 71.9% DHA selectivity and 264.5 mmol m −2 h −1 productivity. Selective photoelectrochemical oxidation of glycerol to dihydroxyacetone (DHA) offers a compelling strategy for integrating solar energy conversion with biomass valorization. However, efficient DHA accumulation remains challenging because two key issues are often underemphasized: the atomic level control of glycerol adsorption geometry for secondary-hydroxyl oxidation, and the suppression of radical mediated overoxidation of the formed DHA. Herein, we report a H, Ti-dual-modified WO 3 photoanode (H,Ti)/WO 3 that enables highly selective glycerol oxidation to DHA via cooperative interfacial pathway regulation. The (H,Ti)/WO 3 photoanode achieves a DHA selectivity of 71.9%—a sharp rise from 35.7% for WO 3 , and a DHA production rate of 264.5 mmol m −2 h −1 , roughly 5 times that of the unmodified counterpart. Mechanistically, highly dispersed Ti sites enhance adsorption of the secondary hydroxyl group of glycerol, directing the pathway toward DHA via two‑electron transfer. H‑insertion, in contrast, shifting hydroxyl chemistry away from free •OH mediated deep oxidation toward more surface-bound hydroxyl species and thereby suppressing DHA overoxidation. With this dual-pronged strategy, our work provides new insights into the selective formation and stable accumulation of DHA in biomass photoelectrochemical systems. Dual-functional carbon nitride quantum dots as electron bridges and PMS activation sites on NH2-MIL-125(Ti) for malathion photocatalytic degradation

Xiaoxia Liang,Zewan Qin,Siwei Zhang,Rong Hai,Lingqing Gu,Xia Yang

30CNQDs@NMT/PMS achieved almost complete degradation of malathion within 30 min simulated sunlight irradiation. • CNQDs was integrated successfully to promote the charge separation efficiency as electron bridges and enhance the adsorption energy of PMS for activation revealed by DFT. • •OH and •SO 4 – were generated to attack the identified sites of malathion computed via Fukui function. • The intermediate products in the photocatalytic process were less toxic than malathion assessed by T.E.S.T. Malathion, an organophosphate pesticide widely used in agricultural fields across the world, has raised environmental concerns due to its persistence and toxicity. Thus, a novel photocatalyst was synthesized by integrating carbon nitrogen quantum dots (CNQDs) onto NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti) (NMT) via a solid-phase thermal polycondensation method. It was demonstrated that CNQDs served a dual function as electron bridges to facilitate charge separation and as peroxymonosulfate (PMS) adsorption activation sites substantially enhancing the photocatalytic activity, which was revealed by Density Functional Theory (DFT). Under simulated sunlight, 30CNQDs@NMT achieved nearly 100 % malathion removal within 30 min via PMS activation, exhibiting 8.1 times higher than NMT. While •OH and •SO 4 – acted as the dominant reactive species to attack the malathion sites. The toxicity of the intermediate products assessed by T.E.S.T. (Toxicity Estimation Software Tool) were much lower than malathion. Moreover, 30CNQDs@NMT performed effectively in real water matrices, demonstrating its potential for practical environmental applications. Synergistic construction of long-lasting slippery antifouling interfaces on Ti alloys via nanoporous structures, low-surface-energy functional layer and lubricant infusion

Yikun Huo,Liting Pan,Baoxin Wang,Hongxing Ye,Baiyi Chen,Jianhua Wu

Ti alloys are widely used in marine engineering, but their long-term performance is severely constrained by surface biofouling. Dynamic slippery surfaces offer a promising antifouling strategy; however, the rapid loss of lubricants under complex marine conditions remains a key bottleneck. Herein, we report a nanopore–low surface energy functional layer–lubricant synergistic strategy to construct a long-lasting liquid-infused antifouling interface on titanium alloys. Ordered three-dimensional nanoporous structures were first fabricated via controlled NaOH etching, providing capillary confinement for lubricant retention, followed by grafting low-surface-energy functional layers to enhance interfacial compatibility. Based on solid–liquid adhesion energy analysis, Krytox 103 was identified as the optimal lubricant for stable infusion. The resulting liquid-infused surface exhibited a significantly reduced friction coefficient (∼0.17) and maintained a high water contact angle (∼103°) after immersion in artificial seawater for 30 days. Antibacterial and anti-algal assays demonstrated adhesion inhibition efficiencies exceeding 90%, while field immersion tests in real marine environments confirmed sustained antifouling performance for up to 50 days. Mechanistic analysis reveals that the synergy between capillary locking within the nanopores and enhanced interfacial compatibility is crucial for long-term lubricant retention and effective suppression of bioadhesion. This work provides a scalable strategy for constructing durable slippery interfaces on titanium alloys and offers new insights into stabilizing lubricants using nanostructured surfaces for marine antifouling and related functional interface applications.

A simple fast-response, polarity-switchable self-powered sensor based on a Ti-based mesh via hybrid triboelectric and streaming-potential effects

Wei Li,Jingkang Zhang,Mingyu Xu,Zhiquan Huang,Guangyong Li,Yuan Jin,Minghua Zhang,Jianke Du,Licheng Hua

A self-powered sensor based on a bare Ti mesh with polarity-switchable output • Combined experimental and COMSOL simulation validates hybrid triboelectric and streaming-potential mechanism. • Demonstrates multi-parameter sensing: flow velocity, volume, ionic solutions, and natural water types • Higher-valence cations (Al 3+  > Mg 2+  > Na + ) produce significantly enhanced signals. The growing demand for standalone self-powered sensing systems is driving significant interest in developing devices that can harvest energy from ambient moisture and natural water sources while simultaneous providing sensing capabilities. This study presents a cost-effective, industrially scalable self-powered sensor based on a simple Ti-based mesh integrated within a pressure-adjustable container. The electrical output of this device can be rapidly polarity-switched merely by toggling the water flow through the Ti-based mesh, without any surface modification or external energy input. Notably, the device demonstrates multi-parameter sensing capabilities, enabling detection of water flow velocity, flow volume, ionic solutions of varying valences and concentrations, and even different types of natural water. The underlying mechanisms are elucidated through combined experimental and computational analyses, revealing that the electrical signals originate from hybrid triboelectric and streaming-potential effects. This work establishes a design paradigm for high-performance, Ti-based self-powered sensors with polarity-switchable characteristics, offering promising applications in environmental monitoring and water quality assessment.

ECM-Mimetic Biomineralized Ti Implant Coating Mediates Quiescence of Osteoclast Precursor Cells to Restore Osteogenesis-Angiogenesis Coupling for Accelerating Osteoporotic Fracture Repair

Xin Li,Huanhuan Zhao,Xinqiang Hu,Hao Wei,Menghuan Li,Yanhua Hou,Kaiyong Cai,Yan Hu

Titanium (Ti) implants are widely used for treating bone fractures, but their clinical success is often limited by high failure rates due to the excessive osteoclastogenic activation of osteoclast precursor cells (OPCs) at the implantation site, particularly in patients with osteoporosis. Notably, the excessive osteoclastic differentiation of OPCs potently disrupts the osteogenesis-angiogenesis coupling to promote osteoclast-mediated osteolysis while dismantling the pro-osteogenic type H vascular niches, resulting in elevated risk of implant destabilization. To address this issue, here we report a biomineralization-tuned extracellular matrix (ECM)-mimetic biomineralized coating (TCC@Har-CaG) to enable redox rewiring of OPCs for promoting new bone formation. Specifically, we employed collagen-I as the substrate material to fabricate the stimuli-responsive biomineralized coating for the cooperative delivery of antioxidative gallic acid (GA) and osteoclast precursor cell inhibitor Harmine. The TCC@Har-CaG coating could sustainably release GA after implantation to effectively relieve reactive oxygen species (ROS) stress at the osteoporotic bone defects, which could synergize with Harmine to efficiently induce OPC quiescence and restore osteogenesis-angiogenesis coupling, thus cooperatively promoting new bone generation. This study presents a potential tactic for addressing osteoporotic bone fractures in clinical settings.

Ti-induced construction of RuO2 solid solution for achieving high selectivity in ·OH generation and long lifespan electrocatalytic degradation of Methylene Blue

Shaojie Lei,Dezhang Ren,Jian Yang,Fan Lin,Zichen Li,Tengfei Li,Yan Jin,Zhibao Huo

RuO 2 electrodes are widely used in electrocatalytic oxidation due to their excellent conductivity. However, their excessively high catalytic activity toward the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) results in low selectivity for hydroxyl radicals (·OH), which limits their application in the treatment of recalcitrant organic pollutants. This study proposes a strategy to simultaneously enhance electrode conductivity and the oxygen evolution potential (OEP) by modulating the RuO 2 -TiO 2 solid solution structure. Through precise control of Ti doping levels and calcination temperature via a sol-gel method, the structure-performance relationships among coating microstructure, crystal structure, and electrochemical behavior were systematically analyzed. Results show that when the Ti doping ratio is Ru: Ti= 1:2.5 and calcination is performed at 600 °C, a well-crystallized RuO 2 -TiO 2 solid solution is formed. This structure significantly reducing the charge transfer resistance and increasing the OEP by approximately 100 mV. Fluorescence and quenching experiments further confirmed that under this solid solution structure, with the ·OH fluorescence intensity increased by approximately ninefold compared to the undoped electrode. The electrode demonstrated significant advantages in MB degradation, achieving >95% decolorization within 30 min, with energy consumption as low as 5.65 kWh·t -1 , and exhibited stability more than ten times greater than that of conventional RuO 2 electrodes. This study provides a new perspective for enhancing the electrocatalytic performance of RuO 2 electrodes from the standpoint of solid solution structural regulation, offering a theoretical basis and a feasible pathway for developing efficient and low-cost anode materials for electrochemical advanced oxidation processes.

Construction of Z-scheme Ti/Ga co-doped ZnO heterostructure photocatalyst with graphitic carbon nitride for efficient visible-light-driven dye degradation

Guo Jin,Sun Yihua,Luo Qiuzi,Zhang Jiangyu,Fang Liang

Innovative solar-driven heterostructure photocatalysts are promising for removing the organic contaminants in the water environment. In this work, a sequence of well-defined Z-scheme Ti-Ga co-doped ZnO/g-C 3 N 4 (TGZ/CN) heterostructure photocatalysts were developed via a simple sol–gel method and the single-phase dispersion method in order to realize the cooperative improvement from the Ti/Ga co-doping and construction of heterostructure. The synthesized samples were analyzed by a variety of characterization techniques, and the photocatalytic activity was assessed by photodegradation of methylene blue (MB) under visible light irradiation. Compared to the ZnO and g-C 3 N 4 , the TGZ/CN composite demonstrated higher photocatalytic performance for the degradation of MB indicating an efficient photocatalytic degradation rate of 95.4% in 105 min under visible light. Moreover, the TGZ/CN photocatalyst exhibited excellent stability after five cycles of MB photodegradation. Furthermore, the as-prepared composites’ possible photocatalytic mechanism was discussed in detail. The improved photocatalytic performance primarily resulted from the effectively reduced band gap of ZnO after Ti/Ga co-doping and the facilitated separation of photoexcited e − /h + pairs caused by the construction of Z-scheme heterojunction. This work offers novel insights in developing hybrids with highly efficient photocatalytic activity towards future environmental applications. Graphical abstract

Efficient Visible-Light-Responsive Photocatalytic Fuel Cell with a ZnIn2S4/UiO-66/TiO2/Ti Photoanode for Simultaneous RhB Degradation and Electricity Generation

Mou Jiaxin,Xu Yunlan,Zhong Dengjie,Chang Haixing,Xu Chunzi,Wang Hui,Shen Hongyu

In order to enhance the photoelectric conversion efficiency of a photoanode and broaden its light absorption range, a ZnIn 2 S 4 /UiO-66/TiO 2 /Ti composite photoanode was developed. The maximum photocurrent density of the prepared photoanode is 2.56 mA cm −2 at 1.2 V (versus SCE), which is 1.79 times higher than that of ZnIn 2 S 4 /TiO 2 /Ti. The rhodamine B (RhB) removal rate, short-circuit current density and maximum power density of a photocatalytic fuel cell (PFC) constructed with the ZnIn 2 S 4 /UiO-66/TiO 2 /Ti photoanode and a Cu cathode are 98.01%, 0.22 mA cm −2 and 16.97 μW cm −2 respectively. The enhancement of the PFC performance is mainly attributed to the extremely good energy band matching and nano-size interface contact between ZnIn 2 S 4 and UiO-66. The existence of UiO-66 can be as an electronic transmission bridge, which not only facilitates the rapid transfer and utilization of photogenerated electrons, but also improves the adsorption ability of the photoanode for RhB molecules. Effect of Y2O3 additive on properties of PCBN composites with TiN-Ti-AlN as binder by high temperature and high pressure sintering

Chen Chao,Mo Peicheng,Chen Jiarong,Hu Xixi,Hu Qiaofan,Lin Feng,Wu Yi

Using TiN-Ti-AlN as the binder, polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (PCBN) composites containing Y 2 O 3 and not containing Y 2 O 3 were prepared under high temperature and ultra-high pressure conditions, respectively. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) were used to analyze the phase composition, microstructure and surface crack morphology of the composite material. At the same time, the compactness, microhardness and bending strength of the composite material were tested. The research results show that the phase composition of PCBN sample is mainly composed of BN, TiB 2 , TiN, AlN and Y 2 O 3 at an ultra-high pressure of 5.5 GPa and a temperature of 1500 °C. With the increase of Y 2 O 3 content, the relative density of PCBN first increases and then decreases, and the changes in mechanical properties also tend to be similar. As the content of Y 2 O 3 increases, it can be seen that the peak intensity of the main peak of TiB 2 also increases, indicating that the addition of Y 2 O 3 promotes the reaction between cBN and Ti. When the Y 2 O 3 content is 3.6%, PCBN has the best comprehensive mechanical properties, with a microhardness of 34.56 GPa and a bending strength of 890 MPa.

Synergetic effects of Sn and Ti incorporated in MWW zeolites on promoting the oxidative hydration of ethylene with H2O2 to ethylene glycol

Wen Xu,Xiaoshu Wang,Weilong Hou,Kang Tang,Xinqing Lu,Yijing Gao,Rui Ma,Yanghe Fu,Weidong Zhu

Although the titanosilicate zeolite catalyzed one-pot oxidative hydration of ethylene with hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) to ethylene glycol (EG) takes advantages of step-saving and facile operation, both H 2 O 2 utilization efficiency and EG yield are relatively low. In the present work, Sn-doped Ti-MWW zeolites, named Sn-Ti-MWW, were developed for this oxidative hydration, showing the much higher H 2 O 2 utilization efficiency and EG yield, compared to Ti-MWW. The extensive characterizations of Sn-Ti-MWW zeolites, in combination with Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations, verify that the doping of Sn into Ti-MWW leads to the higher electropositivity of the Ti species, resulting in the stronger acidity of the zeolite, which is helpful to the H 2 O 2 utilization and EG production. In addition, although the catalyst deactivation is observed due to the deposition of the bulky byproducts onto the active sites and/or into the zeolite micropores, the simple calcination of the used catalyst readily restores its catalytic activity. Therefore, it is anticipated that the developed Sn-Ti-MWW catalyst might be applicable in the one-pot oxidative hydration of ethylene with H 2 O 2 to EG industrially.
