Catalytic oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural to 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid over Ru/hydrotalcite with tunable basicity

Lin Li,Baichuan Wang,Jie Li,Zhiyong Su,Yunzhao Fan,Haimei Xu,Lu Lin,Yuanshuai Liu

The aerobic oxidation of biomass-derived 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) represents an efficient and sustainable approach to produce 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), which serves as a potential renewable building block in the manufacturing of bio-polymers. However, this process typically requires the use of homogeneous basic additives (e.g., NaHCO 3 , Na 2 CO 3 , NaOH, etc.), which compromises its efficiency and environmental sustainability. Alternatively, the use of solid-base catalysts integrates the advantages of heterogeneous catalysis and basic functionality, thus improving catalytic activity and enabling the efficient separation of products and catalysts. Herein, a series of hydrotalcite-supported Ru-based catalysts with different divalent metal cations (M = Mg, Ca, Zn) and M/Al molar ratios were prepared and then devoted to the “base-free” aerobic oxidation of HMF. The catalytic performance of the Ru/hydrotalcite catalysts was found to be significantly affected by the structural parameters of hydrotalcite. Notably, the optimized Ru/Mg 2 Al with Mg/Al molar ratio of 2 can afford ∼99.9% HMF conversion and ∼ 93.5% yield of FDCA at 100 °C and 5 MPa air, along with excellent stability. A systematic investigation revealed that appropriate amounts of basic sites in the Ru/hydrotalcite could effectively accelerate the oxidation of HMF and simultaneously minimize the over-oxidation of FDCA, leading to the high yield of FDCA.

Synthesis of Hierarchical ZSM-5 Zeolite Using a Novel Organosiloxane for 1,2,4-Trimethylbenzene Isomerization Catalysis

Yongzhi Pu,Wenbo He,Yanting Zhang,Ning Li,Zelong Li,Jiayin Wang,Yunlong Ding,Xiaofeng Li

A novel organosiloxane (KHPA) was synthesized using 3-glycidyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTMS) and propylamine as raw materials. The effects of KHPA addition on the physicochemical properties of hierarchical ZSM-5 zeolite were investigated. The synthesized zeolite samples were systematically characterized by x-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), low-temperature N 2 adsorption-desorption, x-ray fluorescence (XRF), thermogravimetric (TG) analysis, and ammonia temperature-programmed desorption (NH 3 -TPD). The results indicated that the addition of KHPA into the synthesis system hindered the growth of zeolite crystals, leading to the formation of abundant inter-crystalline mesopores. When the KHPA addition amount was 6 g, the synthesized sample exhibited the highest external surface area (303.5 m 2 /g) and mesopore volume (0.38 cm 3 /g), and the SEM and TEM images revealed intergranular mesopores formed by the stacking of nanoparticles. Furthermore, the Z-KHPA-6 sample exhibited optimal catalytic performance in the trimethylbenzene isomerization reaction, demonstrating a 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene mass conversion of 36.26%, 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene mass yield of 22.61%, and 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene selectivity of 62.36%. Graphical Using GPTMS and propylamine as raw materials, a novel organosiloxane KHPA was synthesized as a mesoporous template. A hierarchically porous ZSM-5 zeolite was successfully prepared via the hydrothermal method. The introduction of KHPA into the synthesis system impeded the crystal growth of the zeolite, resulting in abundant intercrystalline mesopores. This unique pore structure effectively enhanced the isomerization of 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene, significantly improving catalytic efficiency and reaction selectivity.

Hafiza Aroosa Aslam Khan,Naveed Ramzan,Asif Jamil,Ghulam Rasool,Muneerah Alomar,Muhammad Sarfraz

Decarbonization is essential to address climatic variations caused by greenhouse effects. Membrane-based separation processes present an energy-efficient and scalable pathway for flue gas purification. Permeability-selectivity trade-off of polymeric membranes can be mitigated through combined impregnation of bi-fillers within polymer matrix coupled with applying ultrathin secondary polymer coating to fabricate efficacious dual-layer composite membrane. Microporous activated MOF-5 nanocrystals with high surface area and CO 2 affinity, combined with graphene nanoplatelets possessing exceptional CO 2 uptake, were synergistically embedded into flexible polysulfone matrix. Biodegradable poly(vinyl alcohol) coating layer was uniformly deposited onto doped polysulfone substrate, yielding novel class of anisotropic dual-layer mixed matrix composite membranes, rendering drastically improved CO 2 /N 2 selectivity of 70 and upgraded CO 2 permeability of 92 Barrer as compared to bare polysulfone membrane. Advanced characterizations verified uniform nanofiller dispersion, strong interfacial bonding, and enhanced thermal stability. Five percent PVA coating boosted thermal stability and improved mechanical robustness by 84%, markedly strengthening membrane structural and thermal resilience. An effective strategy is introduced to produce dual-layer membranes with remarkable CO 2 capture performance via optimized bi-filler loading and PVA based surface modification. Highlights Solvothermal synthesis of highly microporous activated MOF-5 nanocrystals. Preparation of Zn-BDC MOF- and graphene nanoplates-embedded composite membranes. Enhanced nanofiller-polymer interfacial compatibility furnishing uniform filler dispersal. Constructing a dual-layer composite membrane by depositing an ultrathin poly(vinyl alcohol) layer. Marked improvement in decarbonization performance of prepared multilayered membranes.

Unveiling Multi-Component Synergy in a Multiphase Medium-Entropy Oxide for Efficient 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural Electrooxidation

Jianguo Dong,Ru Wan,Xuefei Wang,Hongting Liu,Ju Wang,Jing Li,Wenyi Tan,Xiaoyan He,Zhao Li,Lin Tian

Abstract The electrocatalytic oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMFOR) offers a viable route for converting biomass derivatives into high-value chemicals. However, developing non-noble metal electrocatalysts that combine low onset potential, high current density, and long-term stability remains challenging. Herein, multiphase medium-entropy self-supported electrocatalysts NiCoWMoOx/NF, composed of NiO, Co3O4, WO3, and MoO3, was delicated designed and successfully constructed. The NiCoWMoOx/NF achieves an current density of 5 mA cm–2 at 1.23 V (vs RHE) and a maximum current density exceeding 800 mA cm–2. At 1.45 V vs RHE, NiCoWMoOx/NF delivers 98.8% HMF conversion, 97.67% FDCA selectivity, and 96.66% faradaic efficiency, while retaining over 90% of its initial activity after nine consecutive cycles. Combining ex-situ and in-situ characterization techniques, the synergistic roles of each component in the reaction were elucidated: NiO primarily contributes to optimizing the electronic state of Co; WO3 mainly improves the electrical conductivity; and the partial leaching of MoO3 during the electrocatalytic process facilitates the in-situ exposure of more Co active sites. The synergy of these three components enables the efficient conversion of low-valence Co into a highly active and stable CoOOH phase, thereby endowing NiCoWMoOx/NF with superior HMFOR performance. This work provides a referable material and mechanistic strategy for the rational design of high-performance biomass electrocatalysts.

Sulfur vacancy engineered FeS2 nanosheets for boosted O2 activation and photocatalytic valorization of 5–Hydroxymethylfurfural

Akkammagari Putta Rangappa,Wei Xiong,Xinxin Lu,Guohan Sun,Yixuan Liu,Jiangdong Dai,Jun Zhao

CTAB assisted synthesis of FeS 2 allows precise control over surface sulfur vacancies. • Surface-modified FeS 2 boosts O 2 activation and enhances reactive oxygen species (ROS) population. • Vs-rich FeS 2 lowers HMF conversion barrier, giving 15.73 fold higher DFF yield than pristine FeS 2 . • Synergy of Vs and Fe redox cycling in FeS 2 accelerates charge transfer and surface reactivity. • Tuning defects and redox states in FeS 2 enable sustainable and versatile photocatalysis. The photocatalytic conversion of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) using molecular oxygen (O 2 ) as the oxidant offers a sustainable route for biomass valorization, yet is limited by inefficient O 2 adsorption and activation on conventional photocatalysts. Herein, we report a Cetrimonium bromide (CTAB) assisted synthesis of iron pyrite (FeS 2 ) with engineered surface sulfur vacancies (Vs) that enable simultaneous activation of O 2 and HMF under solar light. Introduction of Vs increases the catalyst’s specific surface area and modulates the local electronic structure, particularly tuning the Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ redox landscape. These defect sites act synergistically, where Fe 2+ sites act as preferred O 2 adsorption centers, while adjacent Vs promote electron localization and transfer to adsorbed O 2 , thereby facilitating its activation through the oxidation of Fe 2+ to Fe 3+ . Concurrently, the modulated Fe redox states enable efficient HMF adsorption and oxidation through interaction with the activated O 2 species (•O 2 – and 1 O 2 ). This dual activation mechanism, driven by vacancy engineering and Fe redox dynamics, enhances charge transfer kinetics and surface reactivity, leading to a 15.7-fold increase in DFF production compared to prismatic FeS 2 . Our findings emphasize the critical role of Vs and Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ redox interplay in organizing simultaneous O 2 activation and HMF oxidation, advancing the rational design of efficient photocatalysts for biomass-derived chemical production. Bio-Enhanced NGV/QC−Zn@ZSM-5 Zeolite Nanoplatform for Stabilizing the Dentin-Adhesive Interface

Guinong Qiao,He Li,Xuejian Liu,Haoyang Zhang,Jiazhuo Song,Hamed Alshawwa,Xinying Zou,Rong Han,Wenjun Tang,Ruijing Shangguan,Wenfu Yan,Zhimin Zhang

Bio-enhanced zeolite nanoplatform (NQZ@ZSM-5) engineered for dentin interfaces. • Synergistic antibacterial, anti-degradation, and remineralization at biointerfaces. • Aged bond strength increases ~2.03× versus a commercial adhesive. • Excellent biocompatibility with preserved interfacial adhesion performance. Dentin adhesives are essential for minimally invasive restorative dentistry. However, the long-term stability of the resin−dentin interface remains limited due to collagen degradation and bacterial erosion. Achieving synergistic antibacterial activity, collagen cross-linking, and remineralization at this interface is therefore crucial for durable dentin bonding. Quercetin (QC), a natural polyphenol, possesses both antibacterial activity and collagen cross-linking capability. These properties can be further enhanced through coordination with metal ions to form metal–phenolic networks (MPNs). In this study, we used the NGV peptide, derived from bone sialoprotein (BSP, a non-collagenous protein), as a remineralization motif. We combined NGV with an MPN to construct a bio-enhanced nanoplatform (NGV/QC−Zn@ZSM-5) for dentin adhesives. The nanoplatform was prepared by incorporating Zn 2+ into ZSM 5 zeolites, followed by surface coating with a QC−Zn MPN and subsequent functionalization with NGV. ZSM-5 serves as a multifunctional carrier due to its high ion-exchange capacity, tunable surface chemistry, and ability to enable controlled Zn 2+ release. The resulting system is designed to stabilize collagen, inhibit bacterial biofilm formation, and promote dentin remineralization. This integrated strategy strengthens the resin−dentin interface against both enzymatic and bacterial degradation, thereby improving bonding durability. Notably, after aging, the modified adhesive exhibited a bond strength approximately 2.03-fold higher than that of the commercial control. Overall, these results highlight the strong potential of this nanoplatform to enhance the longevity and clinical performance of dental bonding restorations.

Low-temperature liquid-phase dehydration of glycerol to acrolein based on Fe-modified ZSM-5

Rongyue Cao,Boyuan Chen,Jianan Liu,Jiarui Li,Tong Li,Zhibin Li,Baojiang Jiang

Efficient acrolein production at lower temperature (200 °C). • Optimal acidity identified by tuning the Si/Al ratio in ZSM-5. • Trace Fe enhanced yield 2.4 times more and improved coke resistance. • Synergistic promotion of glycerol dehydration by Brønsted and Lewis acids. The catalytic dehydration of glycerol to acrolein represents a sustainable route for biomass valorization. However, most reported systems require high temperatures or pressure, which limits energy efficiency and sustainability. Furthermore, the relationship between catalyst acidity and acrolein formation in the liquid phase remains inadequately understood. In this work, we demonstrate that nano-sized ZSM-5 zeolites enable high acrolein selectivity under notably milder conditions (200 °C, 1.2 MPa). 0.3 % Fe-modified ZSM-5 (60) catalyst exhibits an acrolein yield rate 2.4 times higher than unmodified zeolite, achieving 41.3 % glycerol yield with 84.2 % selectivity. This enhancement originates from a tailored Brønsted-Lewis acid synergy, wherein Brønsted sites steer the reaction pathway while adjacent Fe-derived Lewis sites promote the dehydration steps. This study not only provides an efficient low-temperature strategy for glycerol conversion but also clarifies the role of acid-site synergy in liquid-phase dehydration, offering a rational approach for designing durable and selective catalysts. A series of ZSM-5 catalysts with varying Si/Al ratios were synthesized via a one-pot hydrothermal method, among which ZSM-5 (60) was identified as the optimal candidate due to its appropriate Brønsted acidity. To further enhance the cycling stability, an Fe-modified ZSM-5 catalyst was constructed by the introduce of Fe, which generated additional Lewis acid sites, creating a synergistic Brønsted-Lewis acid system. In the low-temperature (200 °C) dehydration of glycerol to acrolein, the Fe/ZSM-5 (60) catalyst achieved an acrolein yield 2.4 times than that of the unmodified ZSM-5 (60), while also exhibiting significantly improved resistance to coke formation. Pillar[5]arene-enabled dual regulation of interfacial polymerization for high-performance reverse osmosis membranes

Ziyang Guo,Weihao Zhang,Yue Sun,Chenchen Tan,Chen Zhao,Na Chang,Yanyan Liu,Qinglei Zhang,Haitao Wang

A macrocyclic pillar[5]arene is introduced as an interfacial polymerization regulator. • MPD diffusion is reduced while interfacial reactivity is suppressed. • Controlled polymerization yields a thinner and more compact PA layer. • Enhanced RO performance with maintained water permeance. The interfacial polymerization (IP) of m -phenylenediamine (MPD) and trimesoyl chloride (TMC) is widely used to fabricate polyamide (PA) reverse osmosis (RO) membranes, yet its ultra-fast and diffusion-limited nature leads to poor controllability of the PA structure. Herein, a dual kinetic and thermodynamic regulation strategy is proposed using a macrocyclic additive, per-sulfonated pillar[5]arene (P[5]-SO 3 ), to control the IP process. The introduction of P[5]-SO 3 lowers the aqueous-phase pH and alters the interfacial reaction equilibrium, while its bulky structure suppresses MPD diffusion. This dual regulation enables the formation of a thinner and more highly crosslinked PA layer. As a result, the optimized membrane achieves significantly improved NaCl rejection (99.51%) compared to the pristine membrane (95.65%) while maintaining higher permeance (3.81 L m −2  h −1  bar −1 ), along with enhanced antifouling performance. This work provides a new strategy for precise control of interfacial polymerization toward high-performance RO membranes.

Ultrathin ZSM-5 Zeolite Supporting Platinum Nanoparticles Enabling Enhanced Catalytic Performance in Hydrodeoxygenation of Vanillin

Zhuoxi Li,Chengen Ho,Jun Shi,Rui Chen,Yicun Cai,Bin Li,Tianhao Li,Qiang Chen,Jinyuan Liu,Tongwen Yu

The catalytic selectivity of heterogeneous reaction can be effectively regulated by the design of the thickness of zeolite in zeolite-supported noble metal catalysts. Herein, taking the industrially important hydrogenolysis of the biomass-derived compound vanillin as an example, ZSM-5 zeolite with a thinner b -axis (75 nm) loaded with platinum particles (denoted as Pt/ut-ZSM-5) exhibited 99% conversion and 97% selectivity toward the target product 2-methoxy-4-methylphenol. In contrast, the ZSM-5-supported platinum catalyst with a longer b -axis (175 nm) showed only 63.4% conversion and 50% selectivity, respectively. Molecular dynamics simulations reveal that the translocation times for intermediate vanillyl alcohol through thinner ZSM-5 is longer than vanillin, and the diffusion of 2-methoxy-4-methylphenol in thinner ZSM-5 is faster than that of vanillin. The dynamics of vanillin, vanillyl alcohol and 2-methoxy-4-methylphenol exhibit discontinuous behavior, accompanied by intermittent kinetic restrictions arising from free energy barriers within the straight tunnel of ZSM-5. The translocation times of vanillin and vanillyl alcohol through the thicker ZSM-5 zeolite are typically longer than those through the thinner one; the movement of vanillyl alcohol is still slower than vanillin in thicker zeolite. The slower release of intermediate vanillyl alcohol in both thinner and thicker ZSM-5 demonstrates the possible rate-limiting step in the reaction-diffusion process. Graphical Ultrathin b -axis ZSM-5 accelerates the diffusion of reactants and intermediate by-products to the external surface, where they react with the supported Pt particles, resulting in excellent catalytic hydrogenation performance. Under mild conditions, the catalyst achieved complete vanillin (VAN) conversion and over 97% selectivity toward 2-methoxy-4-methylphenol (MMP).

Electrooxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural and electroreduction of nitrobenzene by hollow CoFeP cubes/rGO/Ni foam

Xinheng Li,Lei Qi,Wanfei Li,Mei Wang,Jianbin Xue,Muzi Chen,Guixin Wang

Electrocatalytic oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) into 2,5-furandicarboxylate (FDCA) has attracted great attention due to its potential for producing degradable plastics. But, HMF electrooxidation still faces challenges such as high overpotentials and sluggish kinetics. Meanwhile, H2 evolution at the cathode is less cost-effective than cathodic reactions producing valuable chemicals. In view of this, a MOF-derived CoFeP cube anchored on rGO-encapsulated nickel foam (NF) via a facile wet-chemical method is reported. The CoFeP–rGO catalyst delivers a low potential of 1.38 V at a current density of 100 mA cm−2 in 1 M KOH containing 10 mM HMF, achieving ∼100% conversion, a 96% yield of FDCA, and 100% Faraday efficiency (FE). It acts as a bifunctional catalyst, demonstrating electrocatalytic reduction of nitrobenzene (NB) at low overpotential with 91% conversion. In the proposed mechanism, the CoFeP–rGO interface is proved to play a crucial role in increasing the catalytic activity via promoting dispersion of the CoFeP nanocrystals on the substrate and accelerating the electron transfer rate across the interface.

Acid-degradable polymer-driven sustainable assembly of catalytically efficient single-crystalline hierarchical ZSM-5 zeolites

Lilong Zhang,Xiaoling Chen,Yuan Hu,Jie Shi,Jiajia Ding,Linyu Zhou,Qingyan Cui,Tiesen Li,Yuanyuan Yue

Despite single-crystalline hierarchical zeolites exhibit catalytic promise, their synthesis still necessitates energy-intensive and environmentally detrimental high-temperature calcination to remove organic templates. Herein, we introduce a sustainable approach for synthesizing large-sized single-crystalline hierarchical ZSM-5 using an acid-degradable polymer (ADP) as a versatile template. The ADP not only facilitates the formation of ZSM-5 with a broad range of n(SiO 2 )/n(Al 2 O 3 ) ratios and tunable mesoporosity but also undergoes complete removal from the zeolite during the Na-to-H acid exchange without calcination. Mechanistic investigations reveal that ADP induces the formation of ZSM-5 framework by interacting with hydroxyl groups and Q 2 /Q 4 Si species while simultaneously guiding the ordered assembly of nanocrystals to achieve a single-crystalline and hierarchical structure. Notably, ADP, acting as a hard template, remains embedded within the hierarchical pores during crystallization. Life cycle assessment (LCA) demonstrates that this strategy significantly reduces environmental impacts when compared to traditional synthesis methods. The resulting zeolite shows superior thermal stability and enhanced mass transport properties due to its unique single-crystalline and hierarchical structure, translating to exceptional catalytic performance in low-density polyethylene pyrolysis and methanol-to-propylene reactions. This work offers an eco-friendly paradigm for zeolite fabrication by leveraging ADP’s availability, low cost, and acid degradability, and aligns with green chemistry principles.
