To fulfill the real-time monitoring requirements for the high SO 2 concentrations in industrial emissions, yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ)-based mixed-potential SO 2 sensors with rare-earth vanadates (AVO 4 , A = Ce, Sm) as sensing electrode materials were investigated in this work. The microstructure of the AVO 4 electrode was tuned by adjusting the corresponding sintering temperature (800-1100 °C), reaching the optimal match between particle size and pore structure at 1000 °C. The CeVO 4 sensor sintered at 1000 °C exhibited the best performance at the operation temperature of 400 °C, in which its polyhedral structure and the formation of CeVO 4 /CeO 2 heterointerfaces enhanced the diffusion and adsorption of SO 2 , achieving a response of -69.73 mV for 500 ppm SO 2 and a sensitivity of -25.92 mV/decade for 50-500 ppm SO 2 , significantly higher than that of the SmVO 4 electrode (-18.87 mV, -12.81 mV/decade). Additionally, the sensor can be operated at a wide temperature range from 400 °C to 600 °C. The response/recovery times were significantly shortened to 31 s/45 s (100 ppm) and 11 s/33 s (500 ppm) at 600 °C, approximately 90% faster than those of 400 °C, while maintaining a sensitivity of -13.06 mV/decade for 50-500 ppm SO 2 . Furthermore, the sensor exhibited excellent repeatability and long-term stability at 600 °C, which remained stable for 18 days with a slight response variation of < 8%. This study provides novel material design and optimization strategies for developing high-sensitivity SO 2 sensors with a wide detection range and rapid response ability, which are capable of operating under harsh industrial conditions.

A series of five (5RE 0.2 )Ta 3 O 9 high-entropy ceramics (RE = La, Gd, Nd, Dy, Sm, Eu, Ce) is successfully synthesized via a solid-state method. Their temperature-dependent fracture toughness is systematically investigated across the 25–1200 °C range, using in situ three-point bending tests coupled with the digital image correlation method. The fracture toughness exhibits a non-monotonic variation: it peaks at 2.3 MPa m 1/2 at room temperature, then sharply declines to a minimum of 1.5 MPa m 1/2 at 400 °C. Subsequently, an anomalous rebound to approximately 2.1 MPa m 1/2 is observed at 800 °C, followed by a further decrease, stabilizing between 1.7 and 1.9 MPa m 1/2 at 1200 °C. High-temperature X-ray diffraction and high-resolution transmission electron microscope results confirm an irreversible orthorhombic-to-tetragonal phase transformation occurring between 600 and 800 °C. Aberration-corrected STEM provides direct atomic-scale evidence of a high-density dislocation network interacting with crack tips, revealing dislocation pinning, bridging, and crack deflection. The combined action of phase-transformation-induced lattice strain and dislocation-mediated toughening effectively suppresses linear crack advance and enhances energy dissipation, thereby accounting for the partial recovery of fracture toughness at 800 °C. These direct observations establish a distinctive synergistic toughening mechanism in high-entropy ceramics, in which irreversible phase transformation and thermally activated dislocation networks cooperate to improve high-temperature fracture resistance.

Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a critical challenge in electrochemical water splitting, necessitating the development of efficient catalysts. In this study, a room-temperature gas–liquid diffusion strategy is presented to synthesize rare earth-doped NiCo₂O₄ nanosheets on carbon paper (RE-NiCo₂O₄/CP, RE = La, Ce, Pr, Gd) as alkaline OER electrocatalysts. Among them, Ce-NiCo₂O₄/CP demonstrates catalytic activity, requiring an overpotential of only 265 mV to achieve a current density of 20 mA cm⁻² in 1 M KOH, which is lower than that of undoped NiCo₂O₄/CP (348 mV). Comprehensive characterization reveals that RE doping modulates the electronic structure of NiCo₂O₄, increasing the Co 3+ /Co 2+ ratio and optimizing intermediate adsorption. Notably, Ce doping facilitates the formation of highly active Ni(Co)OOH species during OER, further enhancing catalytic performance. Combination experiments and in-situ analysis confirmed that the increase in activity was due to the incorporation of rare earths, which enhanced the charge transfer of reaction intermediates and promoted the formation of highly active phases. This work not only presents a synthesis method for high-performance OER catalysts, but also elucidates the electronic modulation effect into the role of rare-earth elements in tuning electrocatalytic properties.

Poisoning effects by alkali metal chlorides is one of the major reasons for the deactivation of SCR catalyst in biomass-fired plants. In this study, the influence of KCl on two vanadium-based catalysts with different promoters, V2O5-WO3/TiO2and V2O5-Ce(SO4)2/TiO2, was investigated. The catalytic activity of the fresh V2O5-WO3/TiO2was higher than that of V2O5-Ce(SO4)2/TiO2at low temperatures. V2O5-Ce(SO4)2/TiO2performed better than V2O5-WO3/TiO2when KCl was deposited on the catalyst surface. Both poisoned catalysts were efficiently regenerated by SO2treatment. The characterization results show that the reducibility and acidity of the catalysts were weakened by KCl deposition but regenerated by SO2.

Integrated CO2 capture and utilization (ICCU) emerges as an effective strategy for reducing CO2 emissions, offering benefits such as facility simplification and improved energy efficiency. To further optimize the performance of ICCU-methanation dual-function materials (DFMs), a Ni/CeNiCa DFM featuring a Ce promoter and Ni pre-doping was synthesized using a one-pot method and impregnation technique. This resulted in an impressive CO2 capture capacity of 11 964 μmol gDFM−1 and a CH4 production yield of 11 061 μmol gDFM−1. The pre-doping of Ni serves as a promoter and catalyst, whereas the impregnation-loaded Ni enhances the catalytic effectiveness of the DFM. Despite its impact on the reduction of NiO, the Ce doping proves valuable by modulating the active crystal surface of Ni, thus enhancing the methane production rate. In addition, 3% O2 addition barely influences the CO2 capture capacity and CH4 production yield but slightly inhibits the CH4 production rate. Furthermore, 500 ppm NOx can have severe irreversible effects on the adsorbent, indicating that DeNOx facilities are necessary for the application of the ICCU system.

The production of high value-added liquid products by catalytic pyrolysis of cellulose has become an effective way to realize the efficient utilization of biomass. This work synthesized a series of Co-Ce, Co-Fe and Co-Mg composite metal catalysts and used them to obtain furans and ketones production. In addition, the CO 2 was used as a pyrolysis atmosphere to investigate the synergistic effect between CO 2 and the prepared catalyst. The results showed that the catalyst effectively promoted the depolymerization of cellulose and improved the oxygen transfer behavior between volatile matters during cellulose pyrolysis. As a reaction medium, CO 2 influenced the carbon distribution of products, thereby increasing syngas yield, and the CO 2 atmosphere promoted the formation of furans and ketones. Compared with those obtained by the non-catalytic pyrolysis in N 2 atmosphere, the relative contents of furans and ketones in the liquid products produced by the catalytic pyrolysis of cellulose in CO 2 atmosphere increased by about 13.38% and 9.8%. In the CO 2 environment, the generation ability for furans was Co-Mg catalyst > Co-Ce catalyst > Co-Fe catalyst, and the generation ability for ketones was Co-Ce catalyst > Co-Mg catalyst > Co-Fe catalyst. These works provide an important way for the efficient preparation of furans and ketones from biomass pyrolysis.

In this study, an advanced oxidation process with E/Ce(IV) synergistic PMS (E/Ce(IV)/PMS) was established for the efficient removal of Reactive Blue 19 (RB19). The catalytic oxidation performance of different coupling systems was examined and the synergistic effect of E/Ce(IV) with PMS in the system was substantiated. The oxidative removal of RB19 in E/Ce(IV)/PMS was excellent, achieving a removal efficiency of 94.47% and a reasonable power consumption (EE/O value was 3.27 kWh·m −3 ). The effect of pH, current density, Ce(IV) concentration, PMS concentration, initial RB19 concentration and water matrix on the removal efficiency of RB19 were explored. Additionally, quenching and EPR experiments showed that the solution contains different radicals such as SO 4 ·− , HO∙ and 1 O 2 , where 1 O 2 and SO 4 ·− played key roles, but HO∙ just acted a weaker role. Ce ion trapping experiment confirmed that Ce(IV) was involved in the reaction process and played a major role (29.91%). RB19 was subject to three possible degradation pathways, and the intermediate products displayed well biochemical properties. To conclude, the degradation mechanism of RB19 was explored and discussed. In the presence of current, E/Ce(IV)/PMS performed a rapid Ce(IV)/Ce(III) cycle, continuously generating strong catalytic oxidation Ce(IV), The reactive radicals derived from the decomposition of PMS, in conjunction with Ce(IV) and direct electro-oxidation, efficiently destroyed the molecular structure of RB19 and showed an efficient removal rate.

Industrial sewage containing oil and dye has already aroused the concerns of cosmopolites. Nowadays, membrane technology is regarded as the spotlight and highly-efficient treatment for various wastewater from human activities . Massive efforts have been put into newly synthesis of low-cost, eco-friendly, low energy consumption, reusable and robust Co-Al-Ce LDHs coated stainless steel mesh (SSM) for wastewater treatment . The CoAlCe-LDHs SSM was fabricated by facile hydrothermal method successfully. While the pristine SSM didn't exhibit selective wettability with water contact angle (WCA) of 114.5°, the novel CoAlCe-LDHs SSM possessed superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic property with underwater oil contact angle (UOCA) of 158.5°. The CoAlCe-LDHs SSM was compatibly applied to the separation of oil/water mixtures with highly separation efficiency above 99.5% and ultrafast water flux of 52.2 L·m −2 ·s −1 under gravity. The easily-fabricated CoAlCe-LDHs SSM was qualified with recyclable, stable and anti-fouling properties, which stayed effective for the separation of oil/water mixtures under at least 30 times recycle and harsh conditions. Moreover, the bifunctional CoAlCe-LDHs SSM also showed excellent photocatalytic activity of dye degradation (with 94.2% degradation of methyl orange solution within 160 min), which can be beneficial to sewage treatment .

High sulfur resistance and high stability of catalysts are crucial for the catalytic decomposition of sulfur-containing volatile organic compounds. In this work, compared to 5Ce-MCM-41, the 5Cr-MCM-41 catalyst exhibited ultra-stability (no activity loss at 600 h) and higher sulfur resistance. The physical structure and chemical characteristics of the catalysts were analyzed by XRD , H 2 -TPR, NH 3 -TPD, CO 2 -TPD, XPS , and TEM. Combining the characterization results, we found that the 5Cr-MCM-41 catalyst presented outstanding catalytic performance due to superior reducibility and appropriate acidity, which results in the conversion of most of the C and S elements in the CH 3 SH to the gas-phase coke- and sulfur-containing products rather than accumulating on the catalyst surface. Meanwhile, the catalytic performance, reaction path, and deactivation mechanism of rare earth metal (Ce) and transition metal (Cr) modified MCM-41 catalysts were systematically investigated by in situ DRIFTS and DFT calculations. Additionally, a new active phase (sulfide state Cr 2 S 3 ) was proposed and proved via accurately designed experiments, which plays a significant role in the collaborative removal of CH 3 SH with hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)). These findings are beneficial for designing high sulfur resistance catalysts for the removal of CH 3 SH and other sulfur-containing products.

The oxygen evolution kinetics of industrial copper electrodeposition is slow, resulting in low electrocatalytic activity and high energy consumption. In this work, a quaternary composite of carbon coated active particles containing Mn, Co and Ce were prepared (Mn-Co 3 O 4 /CeO 2 @C), and Ti/Sb-SnO 2 /PbO 2 electrode doped with these active particles was prepared by co-electrodeposition. The microstructure and chemical composition of the electrode was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray diffractometry (XRD). Linear sweep voltammetry (LSV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and Tafel polarization curve (Tafel) were used to study the electrochemical properties of anode materials. The results showed that the doping of Mn-Co 3 O 4 /CeO 2 @C active particles promoted the crystal transition of PbO 2 , decreased the average grain size, and the doping of Ce increases the average valence state of Co. The modified titanium electrode showed excellent catalytic activity of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) characteristics. The overpotential of the doped Ti/Sb-SnO 2 /PbO 2 anode was only 453 mV when the current density was 20 mA cm −2 in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 solution, which is 508 mV lower than that of the undoped Ti/Sb-SnO 2 /PbO 2 anode. In simulated copper electro-deposition experiments, the cell voltage was reduced by about 400 mV, compared to the undoped Ti/Sb-SnO 2 /PbO 2 electrode.

Efficient conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) into value-added materials and feedstocks, powered by renewable electricity, presents a promising strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and close the anthropogenic carbon loop. Recently, there has been intense interest in Cu2O-based catalysts for the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR), owing to their capabilities in enhancing C–C coupling. However, the electrochemical instability of Cu+ in Cu2O leads to its inevitable reduction to Cu0, resulting in poor selectivity for C2+ products. Herein, we propose an unconventional and feasible strategy for stabilizing Cu+ through the construction of a Ce4+ 4f–O 2p–Cu+ 3d network structure in Ce-Cu2O. Experimental results and theoretical calculations confirm that the unconventional orbital hybridization near Ef based on the high-order Ce4+ 4f and 2p can more effectively inhibit the leaching of lattice oxygen, thereby stabilizing Cu+ in Ce-Cu2O, compared with traditional d–p hybridization. Compared to pure Cu2O, the Ce-Cu2O catalyst increased the ratio of C2H4/CO by 1.69-fold during the CO2RR at −1.3 V. Furthermore, in situ and ex situ spectroscopic techniques were utilized to track the oxidation valency of copper under CO2RR conditions with time resolution, identifying the well-maintained Cu+ species in the Ce-Cu2O catalyst. This work not only presents an avenue to CO2RR catalyst design involving the high-order 4f and 2p orbital hybridization but also provides deep insights into the metal-oxidation-state-dependent selectivity of catalysts.

Compared with that of the transition metal mixed oxide pellet catalyst, the catalytic activity of the supported mixed oxide catalyst was significantly reduced, which was limited in practical industrial applications. In this work, supported Cu-Mn-Ce mixed oxide catalysts were prepared by non-thermal plasma. Catalyst characterization result demonstrated that plasma treatment could promote the proportion of oxygen vacancy and enhance the adsorptive strength of VOCs on the surface of catalyst. Meanwhile, plasma treatment process exerted a slight influence on the pore structure and morphological property of the catalyst. Consequently, CMC/SiO 2 –P exhibited much higher catalytic activity than CMC/SiO 2 prepared by the incipient wetness impregnation method for the catalytic oxidation of toluene and n-hexane. Among the catalysts prepared, the 15%CMC/SiO 2 –P catalyst even exhibited a high catalytic activity comparable to that of the supported noble metal catalyst for the oxidation of the inert hexane. The T 98 of toluene and n-hexane over 15%CMC/SiO 2 –P was 260 and 280°C under the conditions of VOC concentration at 1000 ppm and WHSV at 20,000 mL·g −1 ·h −1 , respectively. This work provided a novel method for the preparation of the supported transition metal mixed oxide catalyst.
