In Situ-Formed Fe-Based Protective Layer for Dendrite-Free K Metal Anode

Meiyang Hu,Xianwen Wang,Yajun Li,Sheng Zhong,Xuan Zhong,Rashid Khan,Jingzhe Zhao,Lu Huang,Yingpeng Wu

Constructing artificial SEI (ASEI) is an effective method to suppress dendrite growth and achieve a stable solid electrolyte interphase in a potassium metal anode. However, traditional methods for preparing ASEI still have some problems such as poor adhesion and inadequate/uneven reactions. These drawbacks significantly impede ion diffusion kinetics and the effectiveness of dendrite inhibition. In this study, an in situ reaction approach was introduced to fabricate a Fe-based protective layer on the surface of K via the spontaneous dynamic chemical reaction between Fe3O4 and K. The in situ-formed Fe-based artificial protective layer not only prevents the corrosion of the carbonate electrolyte, but also has high potassiophilicity and high ionic conductivity, which can reduce side reactions, regulate the uniform adsorption of K+, and improve the transport kinetics of K+, thus inhibiting the growth of potassium metal dendrites. With the Fe-based protective layer, the symmetric cell demonstrates a cycling stability exceeding 1700 h at 0.5 mA cm–2 and 0.5 mAh cm–2. Notably, it also exhibits a promising cycling stability and rate performance when paired with a Prussian blue (PB) cathode. This work offers insights into the development of protection layers for an advanced alkali metal anode.

Insights into enhanced immobilization of uranyl carbonate from seawater by Fe-doped MXene

Min Wang,Shu Zhang,Qi Li,Yuanpeng Li,Enzhe Duan,Caimei Wen,Shujun Yu,Xiangxue Wang

Extracting uranium from seawater not only reduces radioactive contamination in seawater but also provides a source of uranium energy. However, due to the low concentration of uranium in seawater and the high salinity of seawater, extraction of uranium from seawater is challenging. In this work, we demonstrated a simple strategy to synthesize Fe-doped MXene (Fe@Ti 3 C 2 T x ) via a hydrothermal method and applied for uranium enrichment in seawater. The Fe@Ti 3 C 2 T x exhibited excellent adsorption performance in high salinity environments. The removal capacity of Fe@Ti 3 C 2 T x was determined to be 526.6 mg/g for UO 2 (CO 3 ) 2 2− at 328 K with quick reaction equilibrium (∼ 30 min). Kinetic and thermodynamic analyses of UO 2 (CO 3 ) 2 2− elimination process on Fe@Ti 3 C 2 T x surface revealed it to be a spontaneous and endothermic single-phase elimination process. FT-IR and XPS analyses further indicated that the removal mechanism of UO 2 (CO 3 ) 2 2− by Fe@Ti 3 C 2 T x was surface complexation. Our study suggests that Fe@Ti 3 C 2 T x can provide a feasible solution for uranium enrichment in seawater.

Importance of iron complexation and floc formation towards phosphonate removal with Fe–electrocoagulation

Haiyang Hu,Bingnan Song,Yang Lei

Phosphonates are widely used scale inhibitors, but the residual phosphonates in drainage are challenging to remove because of their chelating capacity and resistance to biodegradation. Here, we reported a highly efficient and robust Fe-electrocoagulation (Fe-EC) system for phosphonate removal. Surprisingly, we found for the first time that phosphonates like NTMP were more efficiently removed under anoxic conditions (80% of total soluble phosphorus (TSP) in 4 min) than oxic conditions (0% of TSP within 6 min) in NaCl solution. A similar phenomenon was observed when other phosphonates, such as EDTMP and DTPMP, were removed, highlighting the importance of iron complexation and floc formation toward phosphonate removal with Fe-EC. We also showed that the removal efficiency of NTMP by electrochemically in-situ formed flocs (97%) was much higher than post-adsorption systems (ex-situ, 40%), revealing that the growth of flocs consumed the active site for NTMP adsorption. Beyond the removal of TSP, 10 % of NTMP-P was also degraded after the electrolysis phase, evidenced by the evolution of phosphate-P. However, this did not happen in anoxic or chemical coagulation processes, which confirms the formation of reactive oxygen species via Fe(II) oxidation in the oxic Fe-EC system. The primary removal mechanism of phosphonates is due to their complexation with iron (hydr)oxide generated in the Fe-EC system by forming a Fe-O-P bond. Encouragingly, the Fe-EC system exhibits comparable or even better performance in treating phosphonate-laden wastewater (i.e., cooling water). Our preliminary cost calculation suggests the proposed system (€ 0.009/m 3 ) has a much lower OPEX under oxic conditions than existing approaches. This study sheds light on the removal mechanism of phosphonate and the treatment of phosphonate-laden wastewater by playing with the iron complexion and flocs formation in classical Fe-EC systems.

Interface engineering of Fe/Fe3C@C magnetic-carbon composites for superior microwave absorption

Yihui Zhou,Jin Qian,Zhe Qiang,Weiqing Kong,Changhuai Ye,Meifang Zhu

Heterogeneous interfaces are crucial for enhancing the polarization loss in composite materials, thereby improving microwave absorption capabilities. However, creating well-defined multiple heterogeneous interfaces essential for optimal absorber performance presents a significant challenge. Herein, Fe/Fe 3 C@C magnetic-carbon composites featuring Fe-Fe 3 C-C multiple heterogeneous interfaces were fabricated through in-situ growth of Fe 3 O 4 on polydopamine nanospheres, followed by thermal reduction and carbonization. Owing to the controllable Fe-Fe 3 C-C multiple heterointerface design, the outer-layer magnetic components not only significantly improve impedance matching but also enhance the interface polarization loss. The optimized Fe/Fe 3 C@C-9–1 composite exhibits excellent microwave absorption performance, achieving a minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of −64.4 dB and a broad effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 6.0 GHz at a thin matching thickness of only 1.5 mm, surpassing neat carbon nanospheres and most magnetic-carbon materials. Additionally, simulations conducted using Computer Simulation Technology (CST) demonstrate that the Fe/Fe 3 C@C-9–1 coating significantly reduces radar cross-section (RCS), with values below −20 dB across nearly the entire frequency range of 2–18 GHz, highlighting its potential for radar stealth applications. This work provides a simple yet effective approach for tuning the interface properties of carbon-based materials, underscoring the promise of Fe-Fe 3 C-C multiple heterogeneous interfaces in the development of broadband, thin microwave absorbers.

Li–Fe–Cl Families as Novel Solid Electrolytes for All-Solid-State Batteries

Futing Sun,Zesen Gao,Yan Yang,Haijie Chen

The halides have attracted much attention as novel solid electrolytes because of their easy synthesis, high electrochemical stability, and high ionic conductivities. However, the reported halides for solid electrolytes are still understudied compared with the oxides and sulfides. Here, we studied the Li–Fe–Cl phases that include Li2FeCl4 and Li6FeCl8. Using the self-doping approach, a maximum ionic conductivity of 2.0 × 10–4 S cm–1 at 50 °C was achieved for Li1.8Fe1.1Cl4. It was improved by 3 orders of magnitude compared with that of Li2FeCl4 (8.27 × 10–7 S cm–1 at 50 °C). For the Li|Li1.8Fe1.1Cl4|Li half-cell, it cycled for 2000 h at 50 °C under a current density of 0.01 mA cm–2, indicating an acceptable compatibility between Li2FeCl4 and Li. Finally, an all-solid-state battery was successfully assembled with Li1.8Fe1.1Cl4@LFP as the cathode, Li1.8Fe1.1Cl4 as the electrolyte, and a Li sheet as the anode. The initial specific charge capacity of the battery was 76.36 mAh g–1 at 0.1C and 50 °C. The initial Coulombic efficiency was 73.06%. This study suggests Li2FeCl4 as a new solid electrolyte, and the introduction of Li vacancies into the Li site is an efficient way to improve the electrochemical properties of halides.

Mn-assisted Fe-electrocoagulation strategy for enhanced efficient arsenic removal and its mechanism

Ping Zhang,Feiping Zhao,Penggang Li,Junhao Zheng,Weichun Yang,Qingzhu Li,Zhihui Yang

Electrocoagulation (EC) is a facile technique for removing arsenic (As) pollutants from different water matrices with high efficiency. In this work, a novel strategy of Mn-assisted Fe EC was developed to further enhance the removal efficiency of arsenite [As(III)] from wastewater. When 1 mM of MnCl 2 was added to an Fe-EC system, the As removal efficiency reached 99.99%, and the residual concentration was only 9 μg/L, which is lower than the World Health Organization’s limit for drinking water . The characteristics of the generated flocs by four different EC processes in Fe, Fe-Mn, Fe-As, and Fe-Mn-As systems were investigated. The results showed that Mn 2+ promoted the formation of FeOOH, FeO x , MnO x , FeHAsO 4 , and MnHAsO 4 through low crystallinity and a high surface area . Density functional theory simulation and crystal orbital hamiltonian population confirmed that the generated Fe-Mn flocs had a greater adsorption affinity for As(III) and arsenate [As(V)]. The possible reactions in the EC processes and reaction mechanisms were also hypothesised. The current work provides meaningful insights into understanding the mechanisms of Mn-assisted Fe-EC systems, and further confirms its potential for practical applications in As pollution treatment.

Oxaliplatin-Loaded Mil-100(Fe) for Chemotherapy–Ferroptosis Combined Therapy for Gastric Cancer

Boyao Sun,Xuewei Zheng,Xiaoyu Zhang,Huaiyu Zhang,Yang Jiang

Oxaliplatin (Oxa) is a commonly used chemotherapy drug in the treatment of gastric cancer, but its toxic side effects and drug resistance after long-term use have seriously limited its efficacy. Loading chemotherapy drugs with nanomaterials and delivering them to the tumor site are common ways to overcome the above problems. However, nanomaterials as carriers do not have therapeutic functions on their own, and the effect of single chemotherapy is relatively limited, so there is still room for progress in related research. Herein, we construct Oxa@Mil-100(Fe) nanocomposites by loading Oxa with a metal–organic framework (MOF) Mil-100(Fe) with high biocompatibility and a large specific surface area. The pore structure of Mil-100(Fe) is conducive to a large amount of Oxa loading with a drug-loading rate of up to 27.2%. Oxa@Mil-100(Fe) is responsive to the tumor microenvironment (TME) and can release Oxa and Fe3+ under external stimulation. On the one hand, Oxa can inhibit the synthesis of DNA and induce the apoptosis of gastric cancer cells. On the other hand, Fe3+ can clear overexpressed glutathione (GSH) in TME and be reduced to Fe2+, inhibiting the activity of glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4), leading to the accumulation of intracellular lipid peroxides (LPO), and at the same time releasing a large number of reactive oxygen species (ROS) through the Fenton reaction, inducing ferroptosis in gastric cancer cells. With the combination of apoptosis and ferroptosis, Oxa@Mil-100(Fe) shows a good therapeutic effect, and the killing effect on gastric cancer cells is obvious. In a nude mouse model of subcutaneous tumor transplantation, Oxa@Mil-100(Fe) shows a significant inhibitory effect on tumor growth, with an inhibition rate of nearly 60%. In addition to its excellent antitumor activity, Oxa@Mil-100(Fe) has no obvious toxic or side effects. This study provides a new idea and method for the combined treatment of gastric cancer.

Growth-Oriented Fe-Based MOFs Synergized with Graphene Aerogels for High-Performance Supercapacitors

Lin Liu,Yang Yan,Zihe Cai,Shengxuan Lin,Xiaobin Hu

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and graphene aerogels (GAs) are both considered as good candidates for high-performance supercapacitors. In this work, a growth-oriented Fe-based MOF synergized with GA composite for supercapacitor is prepared. MIL-88-Fe is in situ grown at (002) lattice plane on the surface of graphene via a one-step solvothermal method. Long periodic hexagonal structure and electrophilicity of MOF provide strong p–π interaction with graphene sheets. By utilizing the abundant interspace of GA, the existence of MOF could affect the electric double-layer characteristics of composites. The MOF/GA composites have the advantages of high capacitive volume, fast charge/discharge rate, and reliable cycling stability. The specific capacitance is as high as 353 F g −1 at the scan rate of 20 A g −1 , and the retention ratio is 74.4% after 10 000 cycles.

Electrospinning WO3 nanofibers with tunable Fe-doping levels towards efficient photoelectrochemical water splitting

Song Kai,Ma Zizai,Yang Weiyou,Hou Huilin,Gao Fengmei

In the present work, we reported the fabrication of Fe-doped WO 3 nanofibers via a versatile electrospinning method towards efficient photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. The resultant Fe-WO 3 nanofibers had a high purity in morphology, and the Fe doping levels within the WO 3 nanofibers were controlled in the range from 0.32 to 1.47 at.%, making the band gaps of WO 3 nanofibers tailored from 2.92 to 2.8 eV. The incorporated Fe dopants could not only increase the light absorption, but also improve the charge transport and charge transfer efficiencies, bringing an enhanced PEC activity of the WO 3 nanofiber photoanodes. The WO 3 nanofibers with the optimized 0.32 at.% Fe doping level exhibit the best PEC performance. The mechanism for the enhanced PEC behaviors was proposed.

Efficient photocatalytic hydrogen production by employing a graphdiyne/NH2-MIL-88B(Fe) composite

Ziyu Li,Mei Li,Rongsheng Xu,Zhiliang Jin

The electron transfer rate in photocatalysts is one of the factors determining their hydrogen production activity. In this work, NH2-MIL-88B(Fe) (NFM) was synthesized using a one-step hydrothermal synthesis method and NFM/GDY-25 (NFMG-25) was successfully synthesized by loading graphdiyne (GDY) onto the surface of NFM. The hydrogen production performance and the mechanism of the prepared photocatalysts were systematically investigated using XRD, SEM, FT-IR, XPS, UV-Vis, PL and photoelectrochemical tests. The results showed that the hydrogen production of NFMG-25 reached 61.7 μmol in 5 hours. Photoelectrochemical and Mott–Schottky tests demonstrated that the composite catalyst exhibited high photogenerated carrier separation efficiency and single catalysts were n-type semiconductors. The conduction bands of NFM and GDY were −0.36 V and −0.56 V, respectively, while the valence bands were 1.90 V and 1.12 V. NFM acted as an electron acceptor and donor, which accelerated the transfer of the electrons, and enhanced the photocatalytic hydrogen production efficiency of the composite system. This study provides an effective method for using NFM in photocatalytic hydrogen production.

Efficient photocatalytic preparation of 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid on bimetallic Fe/Au decorated TiO2

Liuqing Li,Yaping Wang,Yu Ruan,Tiefeng Xu,Shaoyi Wu,Wangyang Lu

The photocatalytic oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) is important to facilitate the conversion of biomass into high-value compounds under mild conditions. This study developed Au/TiO 2 catalysts through the urea deposition method, subsequently integrating them with iron phthalocyanine (FePc) via ball milling, resulting in FePc/Au-TiO 2 . These catalysts were calcined at various temperatures. The results indicated that Au nanoparticles are uniformly dispersed on TiO 2 , and Fe in FePc/Au TiO 2 calcined at 410 °C mainly exists in the form of ferrosoferric oxide (Fe 3 O 4 ). FePc/Au-TiO 2 with 30 % FePc which calcined at 410 °C demonstrated outstanding photocatalytic activity, achieving a 97 % yield of FDCA. The effects of various experimental parameters on the conversion of HMF to FDCA were investigated, such as the calcination temperatures, the FePc amount, base, and catalyst dosage. Electron paramagnetic resonance and active species capture tests revealed the catalyst can convert O 2 into •O 2 – and 1 O 2 through excited electrons and photogenerated holes. This study highlights the role of interfacial coupling interactions in boosting catalytic performance, offering a novel approach for photocatalyst development in converting HMF to FDCA.

Activating Montmorillonite for Light-Driven Hydrogen Evolution with the Coupling of Fe Species

Wenyan Zhang,Yihan Wang,Weidong Tao,Hangmin Guan,Chaoqun Jiang,Wenjie Tian,Lingyun Hao

Montmorillonite (MMT), a layered hydrated aluminum silicate mineral, emerges as a promising catalyst support due to its substantial specific surface, ion storage capacity, thermal stability, and cost-effectiveness. Despite the success of MMT-based photocatalysts in degrading compounds, their potential for the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is underexplored. Furthermore, the reliance on noble metals and dye sensitization in MMT-based photocatalysts leads to elevated costs. This study introduces an MMT-based photocatalyst modified with Fe species (denoted as Fe@MMT) for photocatalytic HER without the reliance on noble metals and dye sensitization. The incorporation of Fe species has a dual impact, expanding the light harvesting region of MMT and modulating the aluminum-silicate framework. Simultaneously, it facilitates the exfoliation of individual sheets from stacked MMT layers, generating abundant active sites and inner electronic fields that can promote the separation of photoexcited electrons and enhance the photon-to-electron conversion. In comparison to pristine MMT, Fe@MMT exhibits a 43% reduction in the charge transfer resistance in the dark and a 52% reduction under illumination. Additionally, the majority carrier density within the space charge region increased by 33%. Due to these advantages, the photocatalytic HER efficiency over Fe@MMT was improved, approximately 2.9 times that of pristine MMT.
