Real-time monitoring of hypochlorous acid (HClO) in biological systems is of great significance for exploring and regulating its pathological functions because abnormal production of HClO is closely related with many diseases, such as atherosclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and cancer. Herein, we developed a reliable fluorescent Fe-doped carbon dots (Fe-CDs) for the sensitive and selective detection of biological HClO using ferrocenecarboxylic acid and m -phenylenediamine as precursors through a one-step solvothermal procedure. The Fe-CDs exhibited excellent a wide HClO detection range from 20 nmol/L to 1000 nmol/L with corresponding limits of detection at 7.8 nmol/L. The sensing mechanism is based on the chemical oxidation of the hydroxyl groups on the surface of Fe-CDs by HClO. In addition, Fe-CDs also displayed high photoluminescence yield, excitation-independence emission, as well as good biocompatibility, enabling the successful imaging of endogenous and exogenous HClO in HeLa cells. These results revealed that Fe-CDs holds great promise as a robust fluorescent probe for investigating HClO-mediated biological events. Graphical abstract

Chloroform is an harmful chlorinated hydrocarbon which is hardly degraded using actual dechlorination methods. Alternatively, carboxymethyl cellulose/zero-valent iron appears promising to degrade chlorinated hydrocarbons in water, yet actually carboxymethyl cellulose cannot inhibit the oxidation and sedimentation of iron ions under alkaline condition. Here, polyethylene glycol, a green and low-cost non-ionic polymer, was used as a stabilizer to synthesize polyethylene glycol-stabilized Fe/Ni nanoparticles (PEG-Fe/Ni) for removing chloroform from water in a wide range of pH, from 3 to 11. PEG-Fe/Ni was prepared by a stepwise liquid-phase chemical reduction, then added into groundwater to remove chloroform. Results show that polyethylene glycol can both reduce the particle size from 106.9 to 79.6 nm and prevent the oxidation and sedimentation of iron ions under alkaline condition. The removal efficiency of chloroform increased from 86.3 to 100% at pH 6 in the presence of polyethylene glycol, and slightly decreased to 95.4% at pH 11. The calculated rate constant ( k ) indicates that chloroform removal follows pseudo-first-order kinetics. Furthermore, the PEG-Fe/Ni also removed chloroform from real groundwater at pH 8 with an efficiency of 90.1% in 4 h, which is higher than that for Fe/Ni nanoparticles, of 41.7%.

Arsenite contaminated water is one of severe global environmental problems. It is challenging to treat As(III) pollution by a one-step technology. In this study, we developed a Fe(III)/CaO 2 Fenton-like technology for the treatment of As(III). The simultaneous oxidation of arsenite and removal of arsenic were achieved with efficiencies of nearly 100% and 95.8% respectively, which outperforms conventional technologies. It worked well in pH 3 to 9, and in the presence of cationic heavy metals, anions and humic acid. Moreover, the PO 4 3 − inhibited the removal of As(III). • OH and 1 O 2 played the important roles in the oxidation of As(III). The Ca(II) derived from CaO 2 made a significant contribution to the oxidation and removal of As(III). The SEM and XPS studies confirmed that the formation of Ca-Fe nascent colloid caused the effective removal of arsenic. Our study demonstrates that the one-step Fe(III)/CaO 2 technology has a great potential for purification of the As(III)-contaminated water.

Harvesting water from atmosphere is emerging as a potential strategy to solve the problem of water scarcity. In this work, CaCl 2 encapsulated Fe-ferrocene MOFs hollow microspheres (CaCl 2 @Fe-Fc-HCPs) were successfully fabricated. CaCl 2 plays as water sorbent and Fe-Fc-HCPs act as photothermal components for rapidly water release. In CaCl 2 @Fe-Fc-HCPs composites, the dissolving CaCl 2 in the adsorbed water are effectively prevented, while the water adsorption capacity of the encapsulated CaCl 2 is improved. The amount of water adsorbed by CaCl 2 @Fe-Fc-HCPs (80% RH, 15 °C) is 2.685 g H2O /g CaCl2 , 2.23 times as that adsorbed by pristine CaCl 2 powder. Furthermore, the hollow structure Fe-Fc-HCPs MOFs favorable for loading CaCl 2 nanoparticles and facilitating mass transport. The adsorbed water can be easily released by a simulated solar light (one sun) due to the high efficient photothermal property of Fe-Fc-HCPs. The performance shows no degradation after 5 cycles, indicating its nice stability. This may provide a promising and cost-effective way to harvest water from air only powered by natural sunlight and offer new insights to combine photothermal MOFs with traditional adsorbents to design high-efficiency water generators.

Fe-zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF)@C (Fe-ZIF wrapped by carbon) anode material has been manufactured. It has porous nanostructure, which can effectively shorten the distance of lithium ion transmission, thus achieving excellent rate performance, and can also reduce the volume expansion in the charging and discharging process, thus reducing the attenuation of capacity. The external carbon coating avoids direct contact between Fe-ZIF and the electrolyte, inhibits decomposition of the electrolyte, and impedes formation of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) film, thus obtaining higher reversible capacity in the cycling process. At a current density of 100 mA/g, Fe-ZIF@C achieves a high discharge capacity of 719 mAh/g after 100 cycles. This research shows that Fe-ZIF@C has potential for use as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries.

Efficient removal of antibiotics from aqueous solution is of fundamental importance due to the increasingly severe antibiotic-related pollution. Herein, a high-performance Fe-ZIF-8-500 adsorbent was synthesized by Fe-doping strategy and subsequent activation with high-temperature. In order to evaluate the feasibility of Fe-ZIF-8-500 as an adsorbent for tetracycline (TC) removal, the adsorption properties of Fe-ZIF-8-500 were systematically explored. The results showed that the Fe-ZIF-8-500 exhibited ultrahigh adsorption capacity for TC with a record-high value of 867 mg g -1 . Additionally, the adsorption kinetics and isotherms for TC onto the Fe-ZIF-8-500 can be well-fitted by the pseudo-second-order kinetics model and the Freundlich model, respectively. The ultrahigh adsorption capacity of Fe-ZIF-8-500 can be explained by the synergistic effect of multi-affinities, i.e., surface complexation, electrostatic attraction, π-π interaction and hydrogen bonding. After being used for four cycles the adsorption capacity of Fe-ZIF-8-500 remains a high level, demonstrating its outstanding reusability. The ultrahigh adsorption capacity, excellent reusability, satisfactory water stability and easy-preparation nature of Fe-ZIF-8-500 highlight its bright prospect for removing tetracycline pollutant from wastewater.

Iron and oxalic acids are widely distributed in the atmosphere and easily form ferric oxalate complex (Fe(III)-Ox). The tropospheric aqueous-phase could provide a medium to enable the photo-Fenton reaction with Fe(III)-Ox under solar irradiation. Although the photolysis mechanisms of Fe(III)-Ox have been investigated extensively, information about the oxidation of volatile organic compounds (VOC), specifically the potential for Secondary Organic Aerosol (SOA) formation in the Fe(III)-Ox system, is lacking. In this study, a ubiquitous VOC methacrolein (MACR) is chosen as a model VOC, and the oxidation of MACR with Fe(III)-Ox is investigated under typical atmospheric water conditions. The effects of oxalate concentration, Fe(III) concentration, MACR concentration, and pH on the oxidation of MACR are studied in detail. Results show that the oxidation rate of MACR greatly accelerates in the presence of oxalate when compared with only Fe(III). The oxidation rate of MACR also accelerates with increasing concentration of oxalate. The effect of Fe(III) is found to be more complicated. The oxidation rate of MACR first increases and then decreases with increasing Fe(III) concentration. The oxidation rate of MACR increases monotonically with decreasing pH in the common atmospheric water pH range or with decreasing MACR concentration. The production of ferrous and hydrogen peroxide, pH, and aqueous absorbance are monitored throughout the reaction process. The quenching experiments verify that · OH and \(O_2^{\bar .}\) are both responsible for the oxidation of MACR. MACR is found to rapidly oxidize into small organic acids with higher boiling points and oligomers with higher molecular weight, which contributes to the yield of SOA. These results suggest that Fe(III)-Ox plays an important role in atmospheric oxidation.

The Fenton-like process has been regarded as a clean and efficient approach to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) to deal with the ever-growing environmental pollution . However, developing improved catalysts with adequate activity and stability remains a long-term goal for practical application. Herein, crystalline carbon nanotubes (CNTs) interconnected Fe/Fe 3 C-doped nanoporous carbonitride (Fe-NC) was easily prepared by the pyrolysis of ZIF-8 confined with Fe 3+ . The obtained Fe–NCs possessed high degrees of graphitic carbon and nitrogen. Such Fe–NCs can enhance the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the removal of multiple organic contaminants . The optimized Fe-NC/PMS system exhibited impressive catalytic performance, with a TOF as high as 4.43 min −1 for 3BF degradation, and the removal efficiency of other dyes, phenols and antibiotics was up to 96.2% within 10 min. The removal efficiency of 3BF was 93.4% within 10 min with extremely low iron ions leaching (<0.052 mg/L) even after five cycles. In addition, the effects of pH on the catalytic performance demonstrated that the decomposition of 3BF exceeded 95.6% even when the initial pH varied from 5 to 10. We confirmed that SO 4 - , OH, O 2 - and 1 O 2 were generated in the catalytic system of Fe-NC/PMS, which played a critical role in degrading the organics. These findings provide new insights into the design of environmental-friendly Fenton-like catalysts with high efficiency and favorable stability in environmental remediation.

Perovskite materials have shown great potential in various fields, such as photovoltaic devices, biomedical applications, and fluorescent probes. However, their hypersensitivity has significantly limited their practical application. In this paper, a modified swelling-shrinking strategy was adopted to encapsulate CsPbBr 3 perovskite quantum dots into poly(styrene/acrylamide) nanospheres, in order to create novel hyperstatic and hydrophilic perovskite polymer fluorescent beads. The results show that the fluorescence characteristics did not noticeably change when the polymer materials were dispersed in an aqueous solution over 12 months. Under harsher conditions (acid, alkali, PBS, DMEM, temperature), the novel perovskite polymers showed unprecedented fluorescence stability, which was then applied to the selective sensing of Fe(III) in real samples. The results show that a good linear relationship between 5 and 150 μM was obtained under optimal conditions, and the limit of detection was approximately 2.2 μM. Furthermore, the Fe(III)-sensing applications in Yangtze River water, human serum and tea water has been proven with satisfying results.

Fe(III) chelate reduction is of great importance in the homogeneous neutral electro-Fenton (EF) process, but its reduction mechanisms with different reductive species remain unclear. In this study, the reduction mechanisms of several typical Fe(III) chelates through electron and atomic H* were investigated using experiments and density functional theory calculations. The results indicated that the electron reduction efficiencies for [Fe(III)-EDTA] − and [Fe(III)-EDDS] − chelates were 16.23 and 8.31 times higher compared to [Fe(H 2 O) 6 ] 3+ , which was featured by low E LUMO - HOMO and concentrated LUMO distribution around Fe atom. In contrast, the atomic H* reduction efficiency for [Fe(III)-HA] 3+ chelate was 10 times higher than that of electron, attributed to high chelation ability of HA and negative energy barrier of [Fe(III)-HA] 3+ reduction in the atomic H*-dominated system. Additionally, phthalocyanine (Pc) had insignificant effect on pollutant degradation efficiency in the neutral EF systems due to the lower chelate ability of Pc with Fe(III) compared to H 2 O.

We report a highly efficient and stable electrode composed of a porous Fe-doped β-nickel hydroxide nanopyramid array supported on nickel foam (U–Fe-β-Ni(OH)2/NF) for overall water splitting. The unique structure is assembled via a self-templated strategy by utilizing the FeNi oxalate (FeNi–C2O4/NF) nanopyramid as the templates, followed by an anion-exchange reaction at room temperature. Due to the intrinsic activity of Fe-doped β-Ni(OH)2 along with unique porous array structures consisting of two-dimensional (2D) active materials on three-dimensional (3D) conductive substrates, the developed electrode exhibited outstanding electrocatalytic activity for both the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in an alkaline medium. The introduced amount of Fe plays a significant role in promoting OER and HER activity compared to the β-Ni(OH)2 electrode. The optimal electrode (U–Fe-β-Ni(OH)2/NF-2) generated a current density of 10 mA cm–2 at low overpotentials of 218 mV for the OER and 121 mV for the HER. The electrode also demonstrated considerably stable performance during the continuous water splitting process. Furthermore, we elucidated the promotion mechanisms of the active Fe-doped β-Ni(OH)2 compound for the OER and HER based on extensive characterization and electrochemical measurements. Hence, this work provides a facile approach to developing low-cost, efficient, and stable hydroxide-based electrodes for bifunctional OER and HER in water splitting.

Humic acid (HA) was carbonized at 300, 400 and 500 °C and then functionalized with 1 wt%–12 wt% Fe(III) respectively [CHA300/400/500-Fe(III)]. Adsorption of such Fe(III)-functionalized carbonized HA as adsorbents to aqueous tetracycline (TC: 25 mg·L −1 ) was studied. The adsorption equilibrium time for CHA400-Fe(III) to TC was 6 h faster and the adsorption removal efficiency ( R e ) was two times higher than that of HA/CHA. The adsorption R e of CHA400-Fe(III) loaded 10% iron [CHA400-(10%)Fe(III)] to TC could reach 99.8% at 8 h and still kept 80.6% after 8 cycles. The adsorption kinetics were well fitted to the pseudo-second-order equation and the adsorption isotherms could be well delineated via Langmuir equations( R 2 > 0.99), indicating that the homogeneous chemical adsorption of TC occurred on the adsorbents. The main adsorption mechanisms of TC were complexation Fe(III) and hydrophobic distribution. Electropositive and electronegative repulsion between TC and CHA400-(10%)Fe(III) at lowly pH(2) and highly pH(8–10) respectively, leaded to the relatively low adsorption capacity and more notable influence of ion concentration. When the pH was between 4 and 8, TC mainly existed in neutral molecules (TCH 2 ), so the influence of ion concentration was not obvious. The dynamic adsorption results showed that the CHA400-(10%)Fe(III) could continuously treat about 2.4 L TC(27 mg·L −1 ) wastewater with the effluent concentration as low as 0.068 mg·L −1 . Our study suggested a broad application prospect of a new, effective, low-cost and environment-friendly adsorbent CHA400-(10%)Fe(III) for treatment of low-concentration TC polluted wastewater.
