The presence of methyl orange (MO) and ciprofloxacin (CIP) in wastewater poses a serious threat to the environment and human health. Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) are widely studied as photocatalysts for wastewater treatment. However, TiO2 NPs have the drawbacks of high energy required for activation, fast electron–hole pair recombination and difficulty in recovering from water. To overcome these problems, europium decorated titanium dioxide/poly(vinylidene fluoride) (Eu–TiO2/PVDF) membranes were successful prepared in this work by combining the modified sol–gel method and the immersion phase inversion method. The Eu–TiO2/PVDF membranes obtained with the increase of Eu–TiO2 NPs content during the preparation process were named M1, M2 and M3, respectively. The pure PVDF membrane without the addition of Eu–TiO2 NPs was named M0, which was prepared by the immersion phase inversion method and served as a reference. The prepared Eu–TiO2/PVDF membranes could not only adsorb MO, but also degrade CIP under visible-light irradiation. Moreover, the Eu–TiO2/PVDF membranes exhibited adsorption–photocatalytic activity towards a mixture of MO and CIP under visible-light irradiation. Last but not the least, the Eu–TiO2/PVDF membranes exhibited excellent recyclability and reusability, opening the avenue for a possible use of these membranes in sewage-treatment plants.

Amphiphilic copolymer Pluronic F127 was used as macromolecular additive to investigate the polymorphism and thermoresponsive properties of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membranes. Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were conducted to characterize the polymorphism and morphology of PVDF/F127 blend membranes. FTIR results indicated that F127 existed stably in the blend membranes, and lower F127 concentration in the cast solution was in favor of the formation of α-crystal phase, but higher F127 concentration could promote the formation of β- and γ-crystal phase in PVDF membranes. The results of XRD also confirmed these phenomena. With the increase of F127 in the cast solutions, a more sponge-like structure appeared at the bottom surface of the membranes as investigated by SEM. PVDF/F127 blend membranes also exhibited good thermoresponsive properties. The water flux of the membranes increased distinctly with the increase of the experimental temperature, decreased with the decrease of the temperature, and the increasing and decreasing curves were almost overlapped. Contact angle measurement and permeation experiment indicated that the blend membranes had good hydrophilicity and fouling resistance. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2012

The flexibility, wide response range, and ultra-high sensitivity of flexible sensors make them suitable forwearable technology, automated manufacturing, and robotics. The development of raw materials for flexible sensors and the design of their source layer structures can address a range of issues. In this article, we aim to develop flexible sensors for wearable technology by preparing MXene/PVDF@ZIF-8 multilayer nanofiber membranes through electrospinning technology. By incorporating ZIF-8 particles into PVDF fibers through in situ electrospinning technology, flexible sensors with a rough structure were obtained. We similarly employed vacuum filtration technology to introduce MXene nanosheets into PVDF@ZIF-8 nanofibers, further constructing a conductive network with a multidimensional structure in the vertical direction of the film. The performance of the prepared MXene/PVDF@ZIF-8 composite fiber membrane pressure sensor was tested, revealing its wide working range (0–125 kPa), high sensitivity (25.8–77.9 kPa -1 ), load/unload Time (20 ms/30 ms), and strong mechanical stability. Various human movements and lying postures were simulated, confirming that the sensor can effectively provide feedback on external pressure applied to the skin. This also demonstrates the broad application prospects of the flexible sensor in the field of flexible wearables.

The problem of low charge/discharge efficiency of ceramic/polymer composites is still one of the hot topics in current research on dielectric materials. Here, we demonstrate that the ferroelectric property of ceramic/PVDF-based composites can be modulated by the introduction of linear polymer PI and the use of a spin-coating process. PI inhibits some polarization and partial dipole orientation by interacting with the molecular chains of the amorphous phase of PVDF and BT nanoparticles. As a result, the decrease in crystallinity and loss led to improved dielectric properties and charge/discharge efficiency. The findings demonstrate that the microstructure of PVDF-PI/BT nanocomposite is uniform and dense, with outstanding dielectric characteristics and high charge/discharge efficiency. The permittivities were stabilized in the range of 12.87–17.86 at 100 Hz, and the dielectric losses were all less than 0.27. Compared with the previously reported binary ceramic/polymer composites, the PVDF-PI/BT nanocomposites possessed a high charge/discharge efficiency with a small variation (63%-84%). This work offers an easy and efficient scheme to obtain nanocomposites with outstanding dielectric characteristics and charge/discharge efficiency. It may be a potential candidate for flexible dielectric substrates for advanced flexible capacitive energy storage devices.

Commercial hydrophobic membranes encounter severe problems such as membrane wetting and membrane fouling under extreme conditions, which affect membrane separation performance. To enhance the anti-fouling abilities of hydrophobic membranes, a composite membrane with omniphobic characteristics was fabricated successfully in this paper. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles were in-situ grown via the hydrothermal synthesis method, and then fluorosilane with low surface energy was grafted on polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes. Subsequently, the morphologies, chemical compositions, wetting properties and structural parameters of composite membranes were characterized systematically. Various contaminants were added to the feed to investigate the anti-fouling and anti-wetting performances of the composite membrane in membrane distillation tests. The results showed that butyl titanate was first hydrolyzed to form titanium hydroxide (Ti(OH)4) and then it was dehydrated to form TiO2in the hydrothermal environment. TiO2crystals continued to grow and formed rough morphology with micro-nano synergistic distribution, which is similar to a “sunflower” disk composed of cubic clusters and nanopillars. Meanwhile, fluorosilane successfully was grafted onto TiO2. The contact angles of deionized water, 0.4 mM sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) solution and 0.2%v/vmineral oil emulsion on the composite membrane surface were 167.3°, 162.0° and 158.5°, respectively, endowing the composite membrane with excellent omniphobic features. In direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) tests, the composite membrane exhibited a relatively stable membrane permeate flux, and the salt rejection rate almost reached 100%. The mixture, consisting of inorganic salts, organic substances, surfactants and oil emulsions, was used as feed. In contrast, the commercial PVDF membrane flux decreased drastically and even dropped to 0 due to the membrane fouling and wetting. As for the pristine PVDF membrane, the membrane surface was covered with pollutants and membrane pores were blocked. Therefore, it was proved that the omniphobic composite membrane possesses outstanding anti-fouling and anti-wetting performance.

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) are widely employed in self-powered pressure sensing, yet devices based on a single triboelectric layer have approached their performance ceiling. Herein, a “double triboelectric layer” strategy is proposed to construct a flexible, self-powered, single-electrode pressure sensor. The charge-generation layer employs Co-MOF with high surface area and excellent conductivity, blended into Ecoflex to maximize triboelectric charge output, while the charge-trapping layer incorporates highly electronegative PVDF into Ecoflex to suppress interfacial charge neutralization and expedite charge transport. Benefiting from the biomimetic micro-textured surface created by sandpaper templating, the enhanced charge-storage density afforded by Co-MOF-doped generation layer, and the elevated charge-transfer efficiency introduced by the PVDF-doped trapping layer, the device based on a double triboelectric layer boosts peak voltage to 86 V, which is a 177 % increase compared with the single-layer device (31 V). It delivers an ultrahigh sensitivity of 11.17 V kPa⁻¹ over 0–6 kPa and maintains stable operation beyond 11,00 cycles. With fast response and long-term reliability, the sensor accurately captures human motions and wrist-pulse signals. This architecture pioneers a pathway toward high-performance, self-powered sensors tailored for next-generation wearable electronics.

Dielectric elastomers (DEs) have been extensively studied for their excellent electromechanical conversion properties, which make them ideal for flexible and non-magnetic drives. However, the common DEs usually require a high actuating electric field to achieve outstanding performance, severely limiting their application. In this study, advanced DE composites with good mechanical and dielectric properties was designed and synthesized (named as CPBA/PVDF). Adding DMF to the precursor solution and removing it after polymerization can lower the crosslinking density and increase linear polymer plasticizers in the matrix. As a result, the Young's modulus reduces and elongation at break arises without deteriorating the hysteretic and relaxation properties. Moreover, the incorporation of polar PVDF notably increases the tensile strength and dielectric constant of the composite films. Based on these, the CPBA/PVDF-3 gets a relatively high dielectric constant (5.74@1 kHz) and low modulus (0.144 Mpa), remarkably improves its actuation sensitivity (39.86), which is three times higher than that of the CPBA matrix (11.44). Therefore, CPBA/PVDF-3 achieved a high actuating strain of 25.1 % under 17.17 kV/mm with non pre-strain, and 160 % at 36.3 kV/mm under 200 % biaxial pre-tension. Importantly, it demonstrated a specific power density of 235 W/kg at just 16 kV/mm (@ 6 Hz). In addition, a simple linear actuator based on the CPBA/PVDF film can produce a free displacement of 0.755 mm (7.55 % of the actuator's effective length) and an output force of 306.95 mN/g at 15.7 kV/mm.

Effective particulate matter (PM) filtration in air has become a significant focus of scientific research due to the increased focus on environmental health and sustainable development. In this work, efficient nanofiber scale preparation technology is realized, based on our self-developed electrospinning equipment. Polyvinylidene fluoride/fluorinated polyurethane (PVDF/FPU) nanofiber composite membrane with multi-scale structure was designed and prepared, and successfully applied in the field of air filtration. PVDF/FPU ultrafine nanofibers with a diameter of 30 ± 5 nm were produced by employing high-conductivity dilute solution electrospinning. Subsequently, a PVDF/FPU composite nanofiber membrane material with a double-layer multiscale structure was constructed by adjusting the proportion and sequence of the spinning units of different scales. The results indicate that this double-layer, multiscale PVDF/FPU composite nanofiber membrane features a minute average pore size (0.36 μm), a high porosity rate (94.56 %), and outstanding hydrophobic properties (with a contact angle of 138.6°). This demonstrated exceptional filtration efficiency (99.98 %) and low filtration resistance (67 Pa) under test conditions of 32 L/min. After 10 wash cycles, the filtration efficiency remained above 99 %, indicating remarkable stability. Furthermore, the COMSOL simulation software was utilized to analyze the gradient filtration mechanism of the nanofiber membrane, which correlated well with the experimental results. The double-layer multiscale PVDF/FPU nanofiber composite membranes developed during this study offers a novel approach for creating highly efficient, low-resistance air-filtration materials.

Noble metal nanoparticle (NMP)-based composite substrates have garnered significant attention as a highly promising technique for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) in diverse scientific disciplines because their remarkable ability to amplify and functionalize Raman signals has positioned them as valuable tools for molecular detection. However, optimizing the size and distribution of NMPs has not received sufficient emphasis because of challenges associated with the precise control of deposition and the modulation of reducing rates during growth. In this research, we achieved the optimized size and spatial patterns of AgNWs on electrospun poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) nanofibers by utilizing a polydopamine (PDA) layer as a mild and controllable reduction mediator, by which the size and density of the AgNWs could be relatively precisely manipulated, achieving a dense distribution of effective “hot spots”. On the other hand, harnessing the inherent piezoelectric properties of the electrospun PVDF nanofibers further boosted the LSPR effect during the SERS test, forming a flexible dual-enhancing composite SERS substrate with excellent sensitivity. In addition to addressing structural aspects, exploiting synergistic systems capable of transferring external energy or forces to enhance the SERS performances presents a compelling avenue to broaden the practical applications of SERS. The dual-enhanced substrate achieved an exceptional enhancement factor (EF) of 1.05 × 108 and a low detection limit (LOD) of 10–10 M during the SERS test. This study focuses on integrating NMPs with electrospun piezoelectric polymer nanofibers to develop a dual-enhancing SERS substrate with excellent sensitivity and practicality. The findings provide valuable insights into controllably depositing NMPs on electrospun polymer fibers and hold significant implications for the development of highly sensitive and practical SERS substrates across various applications.

Irradiation crosslinking has emerged as an efficient and eco-friendly strategy for polymer modification, aligning with green chemistry and sustainable development principles. This study incorporated sulfone-containing bismaleimide (s-BMI) into PVDF films via solution casting method, systematically investigating the effects of s-BMI incorporation and electron beam irradiation (0–228 kGy) on PVDF. FTIR results show that both s-BMI incorporation and the irradiation did not alter the predominant γ-phase formation in PVDF film. After the incorporation of s-BMI into PVDF, the shift of infrared characteristic absorption peaks, the singular melting/crystallization peaks in the DSC curves and the decrease in melting point and crystallization temperature of PVDF were observed, confirming the existence of molecular interaction between s-BMI and PVDF chain. PVDF film even containing 10 wt% s-BMI is homogeneous without defects and has good light transmittance of 54.8 % at 500 nm. SEM results confirm the uniform dispersion of s-BMI in the PVDF film, which indicates the good compatibility of s-BMI and PVDF. The incorporation of only 5 wt% s-BMI and the irradiation at 228 kGy increased the gel content (G c ) of PVDF film from 46.6 % to 66.6 % and thus significantly improved the dimensional stability at high temperatures with the strains at 230 °C of only 5.9 %. This study shows that sulfone-containing bismaleimide is an effective additive with good compatibility with PVDF and can significantly improve the efficiency of PVDF irradiation crosslinking. The irradiation-induced highly cross-linked PVDF films with polar crystalline phases developed in this study exhibits significant potential for application in functional devices operating under high-temperature conditions in the future.

The global transition to green energy has precipitated a surge in the demand for lithium resources. However, terrestrial lithium reserves are limited and unevenly distributed. While the ocean harbors abundant lithium, its ultralow concentration and the interference from high concentrations of background ions pose significant challenges for efficient extraction. This study introduces a strategy for lithium extraction from seawater, leveraging the synergistic effect of a flexible LLZO/PVDF-HFP composite membrane and a TEMPO redox couple. A cubic phase garnet-type Li6.5Ga0.25La2.75Ba0.25Zr2O12 (LLZO) solid electrolyte, prepared via a sol–gel method, was compounded with PVDF-HFP to create a flexible membrane with high lithium-ion selectivity. With integration into a redox flow device, the TEMPO redox couple drives the transmembrane migration of lithium ions. The effects of the applied voltage, TEMPO concentration, and operating time on the lithium extraction performance were systematically investigated. At an optimal constant voltage of 1.5 V, the lithium concentration in the enriched solution reached 20.6 times that of the initial seawater. The system demonstrated excellent selectivity with Li/Na, Li/Ca, and Li/Mg selectivity factors of 2309.3, 11164.2, and 3808.9, respectively. After 72 h of continuous lithium extraction, the Li+ concentration in the recovered solution reached 130.6 times that of the feed, with an average energy consumption as low as 34.1 Wh/g(Li). This research demonstrates a promising path for the development of low-cost, highly selective seawater lithium extraction technologies.

Recently, the application of membranes faces a big challenge due to membrane fouling, to alleviate this situation, the hybridization of photocatalysis and membrane filtration has aroused significant attention. In this study, we firstly introduced melamine, cyanuric acid and urea in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as precursors to fabricated the MCU(DMSO)-C 3 N 4 material with excellent photocatalytic performance, and immobilized it on PVDF membranes by vacuum filtration, subsequently adding polyethylene glycol and glutaraldehyde as crosslinkers from MCU-C 3 N 4 /PVDF membrane. The results demonstrate that with the MCU-C 3 N 4 ratio increasing, the membrane flux was gradually decreased. Besides, the photocatalytic efficiencies of MCU-C 3 N 4 /PVDF for rhodamine B (RhB) and tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) degradation are 84.24% and 71.26% respectively, which are about 8 times higher than that of the original membrane. To evaluate antifouling performance of photocatalytic membranes, we conducted a four-stage filtration system, and the flux recovery ratio (FRR) of MCU-C 3 N 4 /PVDF membranes reached over 80% (optimum 91%) under visible light irradiating (λ > 420 nm) for 30 min. Meanwhile, under visible light irradiation reversible fouling (Rr) gradually became the dominant fouling factor instead of the irreversible fouling (Rir), indicating the excellent antifouling performance of MCU-C 3 N 4 /PVDF membranes. This novel method to modify membranes with MCU-C 3 N 4 gives insight to photocatalytic and self-cleaning properties of photocatalytic composite membranes, providing theoretical basis for their broad application.
