Influence of intermolecular H-bonding on the acid-base interfacial properties of -COOH and ferrocene terminated SAM

Qing Zheng,Huibo Shao

We have explored the intermolecular interactions within a two-component self-assembled monolayer, a model system to develop our understanding of interfacial chemistry in molecular level. The redox signal of 11-ferrocenyl-1-undecanethiol (FcC11) reversibly responded to the formation of intermolecular H-bonding: The intermolecular H-bonding between the terminal carboxyl groups of MSA promoted the formation of MSA assemblies, which increased the influence of MSA on the neighboring molecules (FcC11). Meanwhile, the disordered FcC11 appeared within the locally ordered FcC11 patches, resulting in the presence of a new couple of redox peaks in the cyclic voltammograms. The surface coverage that corresponding to the H-bonding affected FcC11 increased exponentially from 0 to 3.49 × 10 −10  mol cm −2 as a function of the time of MSA assembly. The pK 1/2 value (the pH when half of the –COOH groups are ionized) that determined for the FcC11/MSA modified gold substrate was obviously higher than the alkanoic acids in aqueous solution. The results show that the intermolecular H-bonding between MSA molecules plays a key role in controlling the molecular assembly within the two-component self-assembled monolayer, which provides an approach for regulating the structural changes of the model membrane in molecular level.

Water-based PEKC-COOH sizing agent for enhancing the interfacial adhesion of carbon fiber/polyether-ether-ketone composites

Jiaoli Hu,Fei Yan,Hao Liu,Lianshuang Zhao,Zheng Li,Yu Liu,Yuhui Ao,Liu Liu

Improving the dissatisfactory interfacial adhesion of carbon fiber (CF)/polyether-ether-ketone (PEEK) composites in some specific conditions is an extremely urgent demand. In this work, a series of soluble phenolphthalein polyaryl-ether-ketone polymers with different carboxyl contents (PEKC-COOH) were synthesized and employed to prepare water-based sizing agents. PEKC-COOH showed high solubility and excellent thermal properties, with over 239.5 °C of T g value, which were much higher than that of PEEK (148.4 °C). The sizing agents exhibit good storage stability with particle sizes between 60.6 and 75.0 nm. Compared to unsized CF/PEEK composites, the bending strength and interlaminar shear strength of the CF-5/PEEK composites were enhanced by 52.9% and 53.3%, respectively. An illustrative mechanism for the interfacial reinforcement effect of the sizing agent was proposed accordingly. The protocol provides an effective and green method towards water-based sizing agent for enhancing the interfacial properties of CF/PEEK composites.

A double-lyophilization method for the preparation of CS/GO-COOH scaffold and its application in blood detoxification

Gang Zhou,Lei Wang,Jianchao Li,Jun Tai,Haisheng Su,Jing Zhang,Yuan Xi,Yubo Fan

The accumulation of uremic toxins in blood might induce chronic renal failure (CRF). The incidence of CRF was as high as 10%. The traditional therapy for CRF was hemodialysis, which was more effective to remove small molecules, such as urea and creatinine. However, this detoxification method ignored the tissue functional adaption due to the retention of macromolecule uremic toxins. To solve this problem, this paper developed a new kind of chitosan/carboxyl graphite oxide (CS/GO-COOH) scaffold via a double-lyophilization method. Then, this synthetic scaffold was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope, hydrophilic test, mechanical property, and in vitro detoxification test. Covalent bonding and hydrogen bonding were formed, indicating the strong interactions between CS and GO-COOH. There were interconnected networks in the synthesized scaffold. The mechanical test suggested that the GO-2500 scaffold had excellent mechanical strength, which was 7.41 ± 0.82 MPa with 25% shrink. What is more, GO-2500 could totally rebound within 1s, after compressed to 90% shrink. The rates of GO-2500 were 1587 ± 60 and 246 ± 10% according to the water uptake and retention data, respectively. Furthermore, the detoxification of GO-2500 to urea, creatinine, VB12, and β2-m were 67.59 ± 2.31, 39.67 ± 2.95, 31.51 ± 2.62, and 83.82 ± 7.76 mg/g, respectively. The resulting CS/GO-COOH scaffold held great potential for the detoxification of uremic toxins.

Cu/Cu2O-embedded carbon from Cu-MOF integrated with MWCNTs-COOH for sensitive levodopa detection in biological samples

Nanke Ma,Anqi Wei,Huiling Peng,Lixia Xie,Yuan Jin,Guangli Li

Cu-MOF-derived Cu/Cu 2 O-embedded carbon integrated with MWCNTs-COOH. • Synergistic hetero-interface with Cu⁺ Lewis acid sites and conductive network. • Sensitive L -DOPA detection with 0.007 μM LOD and broad linear range. • Effective anti-interference against uric acid in biological matrices. • Validated applicability in human serum and urine samples (94.8–105.2%). Reliable monitoring of levodopa ( L -DOPA) is clinically crucial for optimizing Parkinson’s disease therapy and minimizing side effects. Herein, a sensitive electrochemical sensor was constructed using a composite of Cu-MOF-derived Cu/Cu 2 O-embedded carbon integrated with carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (C-Cu-MOF/MWCNTs-COOH). The key innovation of this work lies in designing a synergistic hetero-interface where carbonization yields Cu and Cu 2 O species within a carbon framework, while the incorporated MWCNTs-COOH establish a conductive network that facilitates electron transfer. The enhanced electrochemical response arises from the synergistic interaction between the mixed-valence copper species and the carbon framework. Specifically, Cu + serves as Lewis acid sites for L -DOPA enrichment while the carbon scaffold together with Cu 0 promotes interfacial electron transfer. Kinetic analysis reveals an adsorption-controlled process involving two-electron and two-proton transfer. Under optimized conditions, the sensor delivers a broad linear response (0.01–15 μM) with a low detection limit of 0.007 μM, alongside satisfactory repeatability, reproducibility, and long-term stability (94.3% retention after 21 days). Notably, uric acid (UA), a major coexisting interferent in physiological fluids with overlapping oxidation potential, is well resolved from L -DOPA at the modified electrode, causing negligible interference in coexistent measurements. Practical applicability is further validated by recoveries of 94.8–105.2% in human serum and urine samples. These results demonstrate that C-Cu-MOF/MWCNTs-COOH is a highly effective sensing platform for L -DOPA, combining excellent sensitivity, selectivity, and practical utility for clinical monitoring.

MWCNTs-COOH/Nafion modified PCB gold electrode for electrochemical detection of dopamine secreted by SKPs-derived dopaminergic neurons

Fujia Sun,Wenrui Cao,Jiaqi Wang,Qiuwen Sun,Hao Han,Zige Peng,Bucheng Yang,Minghao Hou,Yanzi Chen,Yiting Chen,Yejing Zhang,Feng Wang,Xiaosong Gu,Hui Zhu,Chengbin Xue

Low-cost PCB‑gold electrode with superior electron kinetics. • MWCNTs/Nafion network boosts sensitivity and selectivity. • High performance: 1–70 μM linear range and 202 nM LOD. • Strong anti-biofouling and selectivity in complex media. • Direct dopamine detection in 3D dECM neuronal models. Dopamine (DA) is a crucial neurotransmitter whose abnormal fluctuations are linked to neurological disorders such as Parkinson's disease. Detecting DA in complex biological matrices faces challenges from coexisting interferents and electrode biofouling. Here, we developed a carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs-COOH) and Nafion-modified printed circuit board gold electrode (PCB-AuE) for selective DA detection. The PCB-AuE platform offers superior electron transfer kinetics, ultra-low cost, and design flexibility compared to commercial electrodes. The synergistic MWCNTs-COOH/Nafion modification provides a highly conductive 3D network with abundant active sites while electrostatically repelling anionic interferents (ascorbic acid and uric acid). The sensor achieved a broad linear range (1–70 μM), high sensitivity (1.98 μA/μM), and low detection limit (202 nM) with excellent reproducibility (RSD = 4.8%). Despite an 8.5% signal attenuation in culture media versus PBS, the sensor maintained reliable detection capability. The platform successfully detected endogenous DA secreted by skin-derived precursors (SKPs)-derived dopaminergic neurons cultured in 3D brain decellularized extracellular matrix scaffolds. This disposable, cost-effective sensor provides a practical analytical tool for neurotransmitter monitoring in complex 3D tissue models with significant potential for disease diagnosis and drug screening applications. Schematic representation of the fabrication and application of a nanocomposite-modified PCB gold electrode array for dopamine detection in 3D neuronal models. Sensor Fabrication and Surface Modification. A Printed Circuit Board (PCB) gold electrode array is utilized as the transducer platform. The three-electrode system consists of a central Working Electrode (WE), a surrounding Counter Electrode (CE), and a Pseudo-Reference Electrode (Pseudo-RE). The WE surface is modified via drop-casting with a nanocomposite ink comprising carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs-COOH) and Nafion. The MWCNTs-COOH provide a high-surface-area conductive network, while Nafion acts as a cation-exchange polymer. Construction of the 3D Dopaminergic Neuronal Model. Skin-derived precursor cells (SKPs) are cultured as spheres and subjected to a 14-day neural induction protocol to generate mature dopaminergic neurons (SKPs-DA), confirmed by tyrosine hydroxylase (TH + ) expression. These neurons are subsequently encapsulated within a decellularized extracellular matrix (dECM) scaffold to create a biomimetic 3D SKPs-DA neuronal tissue. Cell viability within the scaffold is validated via Live/Dead staining (Calcein-AM/Ethidium homodimer-1). Electrochemical Dopamine (DA) Detection and Sensing Mechanism. The modified electrode exhibits high sensitivity (1.98 μA/μM) and a low limit of detection (202 nM) within a linear range of 1–70 μM. The sensing mechanism leverages the synergistic effects of the nanocomposite: (1) The negatively charged sulfonate groups in Nafion electrostatically attract cationic dopamine (DA + ). (2) Anionic species such as ascorbic acid (AA) and uric acid (UA) are repelled by the Nafion layer, enhancing selectivity. (3) Differential Pulse Voltammetry (DPV) shows a distinct oxidation peak at approximately 0.1 V for the SKPs-DA supernatant compared to undifferentiated controls, demonstrating the sensor's efficacy in monitoring neurotransmitter release in complex biological matrices. Muchen Lu,Jie Sun,Meiqi Cheng,Yue Zhao,Jian Zhang,Haina Bai,Junlian Ren,Ruoyi Li

The extensive application of doxycycline hydrochloride (DOX) in cultivation industry concerns regarding its potential ecological ramifications. Electrocatalysis has emerged as a safe and efficient method for antibiotic removal from water. In this study, Ni/MWCNTs-COOH/Ti composite electrodes were prepared using anodic oxidation and constant-current electrodeposition techniques for the cathodic electrocatalytic degradation of DOX. The electrodes were characterized and evaluated using SEM, XRD , and XPS analysis . Under optimized conditions, 75.49 % of DOX was eliminated within 60 min with an energy consumption of 0.66 kWh/m 3 . Even after ten successive degradation cycles, the degradation rate of DOX remained at 70.78 %, confirming the exceptional stability of the electrodes. LC-MS analysis was employed to identify intermediates formed during the DOX degradation process. The results revealed that the hybrid orbital coordination structure formed by vacant d orbitals and d orbitals on the exoelectronic structure of Ni enhances catalytic activity and electrochemical stability. And the exposed reactive groups on the outer surface of MWCNTs-COOH, acting synergistically with Ni. Furthermore, the composite cathode generates reactive H ⁎ and the anode generates ·OH, resulting in a synergistic coupling that further enhances catalytic activity. This study presents a novel approach for addressing antibiotic contamination through environmental remediation.

Structure–Property Regulation of PA5T/56 Copolyamides and Dual-Responsive Shape-Memory Behavior of Their MWCNT-COOH Composites

Jiaying Liu,Guang Nie,Shuai Yang,Yanmin Zhang,Ziyun Li,Sitong Wang,Zijian Song,Shuanli Du,Yingchun Li

Semi-aromatic polyamides (SAPAs) are emerging as promising engineering polymers due to their unique combination of high rigidity, thermal stability, and processability. However, pure SAPAs suffer from limited electrical conductivity and multifunctional responsiveness, hindering their application in smart materials and actuators. In this paper, PA5T/56 copolyamides with varying terephthalic acid/adipic acid molar ratios (3/7–7/3) were synthesized via melt polycondensation and characterized mainly by 1 H NMR, FTIR. PA5T/56 (3/7), with the optimal balance of mechanical performance and processability, was selected as the composite matrix. Composites containing different contents of carboxyl-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT-COOH, 0, 5, 10, 15 wt%) were prepared by solution casting. The effects of MWCNT-COOH on the thermal stability, mechanical properties, and especially thermo- and electro-induced shape memory behaviors of the composites were comprehensively investigated. The results show that MWCNT-COOH markedly improves the thermo-induced shape memory at an appropriate loading, with the shape recovery rate reaching 82.8% and the shape fixity rate exceeding 90% at 10 wt% MWCNT-COOH. 15 wt% MWCNT-COOH/PA5T/56 can achieve electro-induced shape recovery via Joule heating within 44 s. Overall, this work establishes the structure–property relationships of PA5T/56 copolyamide with tailored monomer compositions and demonstrates the effectiveness of MWCNT-COOH in imparting thermo- and electro-responsive functionalities.

Carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs-COOH)-intercalated graphene oxide membranes for highly efficient treatment of organic wastewater

Wen-Juan Zeng,Chuang Li,Yue Feng,Shu-Huan Zeng,Bing-Xin Fu,Xiao-Liang Zhang

GO/CNTs composite membranes with fine hierarchical nanostructure were facilely fabricated by intercalation with 1D carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs-COOH) into 2D graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets for efficient organic wastewater treatment. By characterization results of XRD, Raman, FTIR, TEM and water contact angle, MWCNTs-COOH was successfully to be intercalated into GO lamellar interlayers with grafting reactions, which would improve water permeated flux and stability of membrane. The influences of GO/CNTs ratios, loading amounts, CNTs types and support types on the membrane separation performance were systematically investigated towards methylene blue dye solution. For the GO/CNTs composite membranes prepared under the optimized conditions, the permeated flux of 34.4 L m −2 h -1 and rejection over 99.7 % were obtained towards methylene blue solutions under the transmembrane pressure difference of 0.9 bar, respectively. Compared with pristine GO membrane, it exhibited a nearly 10-fold water permeated flux improvement meanwhile maintaining high rejection. Moreover, the electrostatic interaction and size exclusion effects were synergistically contributed to be responsible for the efficiently separation properties of the GO/CNTs membranes towards different positively/negatively charged dyes and neutral organic molecules. Such the GO/CNTs membranes also exhibited good chemical stability for acid resistance with highly efficient separation performance.

A 3D flexible conductive network skeleton by SWCNT-COOH and PVA-PAA enabling high performance for Si anode

Fuzhen Li,Ying Xu,Ling Chen,Jinghao Xie,Li Jiang,Zhongxin Liang,Guojing Zang,Zishou Zhang

Silicon anode undergoes dramatic volume expansion during charge and discharge, causing structural and interfacial instability that severely degrades battery cycling performance. Herein, we propose a three-dimensional (3D) flexible self-standing SiMP/SWCNT-COOH@PVA/PAA anode, in which carboxylation-modified single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT-COOH) construct a highly conductive and flexible skeleton to provide rapid electron transport channels for micron silicon (SiMP), while polyacrylic acid-polyvinyl alcohol (PVA-PAA) cross-linking layer forms a high-strength polymer interface to strengthen the conductive skeleton and helps to maintain the structural integrity of SiMP. The resulting electrode exhibits ultra-high electrical conductance (12406 S m −1 ) and exceptional mechanical characteristic (tensile strength of 46.95 MPa). More importantly, it demonstrates extremely stable electrochemical properties, with an impressive maximum capacity of approximately 2868.5 mAh g −1 at 0.2C, while retaining an exceptional 96.49 % of capacity even after 100 cycles. A consistent capacity of 1000 mAh g −1 at 1C throughout 1000 cycles is also realized. Furthermore, a flexible full battery based on SiMP/SWCNT-COOH@PVA/PAA anode achieves a discharge capacity of 49.5 mAh g −1 following 100 cycles, and illuminates a LED strip normally under various bending conditions. These results are expected to open a new way towards enhanced performance silicon-based electrodes within flexible LIBs.

Synthesis of Cobalt hexacyanoferrate decorated graphene oxide/carbon nanotubes-COOH hybrid and their application for sensitive detection ofhydrazine

Keqin Deng,Chunxiang Li,Xiyang Qiu,Jianhong Zhou,Zhaohui Hou

ABSTRCT A three-dimensional graphene oxide/carbon nanotubes-COOH hybrid (GO/CNTs-COOH) consisted of two-dimensional graphene oxide (GO) and one-dimensional carbon nanotubes-COOH (CNTs-COOH) was synthesized. The GO/CNTs-COOH hybrid exhibited excellent water-solubility owing to the high hydrophilicity of GO components and the carboxylation of carbon nanotubes. The cobalt hexacyanoferrate decorated GO/CNTs-COOH (CoHCF/GO/CNTs-COOH) has been prepared using electrostatic adsorption of Co 2+ on GO/CNTs-COOH and K 4 [Fe(CN) 6 ] as an in-situ chemical precipitant. FT-IR, Raman spectroscopy, TEM, SEM, and cyclic voltammetry were utilized to characterize the nanohybrid. The electrochemistry behavior of hydrazine on different modified electrodes was also studied. The CoHCF/GO/CNTs-COOH modified GCE (CoHCF/GO/CNTs-COOH/GCE) exhibited greatly enhanced electrocatalytic performance towards electro-oxidation of hydrazine. The oxidation peak currents showed good linear relationships with concentration of hydrazine. It can be applied to detect hydrazine in samples sensitively.

Label-Free Electrochemiluminescent Immunosensor for Detection of Carcinoembryonic Antigen Based on Nanocomposites of GO/MWCNTs-COOH/Au@CeO2

Xuehui Pang,Jianxiu Li,Yongbei Zhao,Dan Wu,Yong Zhang,Bin Du,Hongmin Ma,Qin Wei

A high-sensitivity electrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensor was conducted to detect carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA). Nanocomposites of graphene oxide/carboxylated multiwall carbon nanotubes/gold/cerium oxide nanoparticles (GO/MWCNTs-COOH/Au@CeO2) were used as antibody carriers and sensing platforms to modify on glassy carbon electrodes (GCE). CeO2 nanoparticles were first exploited as an ECL luminescent material and the possible ECL mechanism was proposed in this work. GO/MWCNTs-COOH was used as a loading matrix for CeO2 nanoparticles because of the superior conductivity and large specific surface area. Au nanoparticles were further deposited on this matrix to attach anti-CEA and enhance the sensitivity of immunosensor. The proposed sensing platform showed excellent cathodic ECL performance and sensitive response to CEA. The effects of experimental conditions on the ECL performance were investigated. The proposed immunosensor showed the broad linear range (0.05–100 ng/mL) and the low detection limit (LOD, 0.02 ng/mL, signal-to-noise ratio = 3) according to the selected experimental conditions. The excellent analysis performance for determination of CEA in the human serum samples simplied this immunosensor displayed high sensitivity and excellent repeatability. More importantly, this conducted immunosensor broadens the use scope of CeO2 nanoparticles.
