We present a robustly durably corrosive superhydrophobic coating with photothermal effect (DCSCPE) for anti-icing/de-icing performance that can be designed by using as-synthetized Fe 3 O 4 composite nanoparticles (NPs), along with protective coat (polydimethylsiloxane) and bonding basecoat (epoxy). In this design, the Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles (NPs) are optimized in dual-size: 200 /20 nm and weight ratio:1/2 to achieve both micro/nanostructures and superior photothermal conversion properties (up to 14.4 °C/min) and light-to-heat conversion efficiency (62.38%), which is superior to other DCSCPE coatings. As a result, the DCSCPE 1/2 takes on excellent superhydrophobicity under corrosion for 20 days by pH ∼ 1–14 and efficient de-icing performance, i.e., the ice-covering is melted in short time of 790 s under sunlight illumination and the DCSCPE 1/2 surfaces show a high deicing rate (∼1.96 kg m −2 h −1 ), which is benefited from synergy effect that is resulted from the excellent micro/nanostructures and the high-efficiently photothermal ability of as-synthetized Fe 3 O 4 composite NPs. The stability on chemical and mechanical interface of micro/ nanostructures can be further demonstrated to greatly favor the robust anti-icing/de-icing performance for a long term. This studying is considerably significant to design the novel protective materials on anti-icing, anti-corrosion that can be extended into practical applications.

Fiber-reinforced polymer-based composites have been used widely in engineering structural components but suffer from ice accretion issues. Assembling a straightforward electrothermal anti-icing/deicing system that combines passive superhydrophobic and photothermal effects to alleviate energy shortages is considered the most practical strategy. However, the instability of superhydrophobicity often causes compromising anti-icing performances. In addition, little is known about how to evaluate the effectiveness of these passive technologies and optimize active power supply strategies. In this study, a versatile fiber-reinforced polymer-based composite was fabricated by integral molding with superhydrophobic and electro/photothermal film. Based on the tailorability of surface temperature, a quantitative method was developed to evaluate the passive anti-icing technology. The superhydrophobic and photothermal effects were proven to reduce electrical energy consumption by 73.6%, which was further declined to 96% after optimizing the anti-icing/deicing power supply strategy. Additionally, the textures and porosity of the spraying substrate were highlighted to enhance the superhydrophobic durability. The fabricated robust and versatile fiber-reinforced polymer-based composite shows promise for use in controllable anti-icing/deicing of engineering components, such as unmanned aerial vehicles and wind turbine blades.

In this work, multiwalled carbon nanotubes (modified MWCNTs) were modified by stearic acid and then added to silicone for the fabrication of C/silicone composite monolith materials. The obtained C/silicone monolith demonstrates strong robust superhydrophobicity after Taber abrasion, stretching, bending, twisting, high external pressure and knife scratching. The elongation rate and tensile strength of C/silicone were also increased by approximately 172% and 300%, respectively, compared with those of pristine silicone. In addition, the introduction of carbon nanotubes endows the composite materials with superior photothermal conversion performances, correspondingly presenting outstanding anti-icing and accelerated deicing effects, which can greatly reduce the heat loss of photothermal materials in practical applications. Importantly, the whole fabrication process would not include any fluorinated polymers so that the materials can be considered to be potentially safe and environment friendly.

Surface icing poses a significant threat to various industries, including aircraft, power grid, transportation, communication facilities, and offshore platforms. The inefficiency and high energy consumption associated with conventional de-icing methods necessitate the development of an efficient, energy-saving, stable, and reliable alternative. This study proposes an approach to these challenges by fabricating microstructured MWCNT/TiN/PDMS (M MTP ) flexible films using laser processing and functional nanocomposites . The multiresponsive M MTP flexible films allow precise control of the surface temperature by adjusting the voltage or the intensity of near-infrared (NIR) light, with surface temperatures exceeding 150 °C with voltage of 10 V or NIR light of 0.9 W/cm 2 intensity. This heating property allows the films to maintain its superhydrophobicity even at temperatures as low as -30 °C. In addition, M MTP flexible films can effectively increase the thermal resistance between the solid-liquid phase and reduce the nucleation sites of the droplet, thereby greatly delaying the formation of ice. By using electrothermal/photothermal effects on the films significantly reduces the ice shear strength , making de-icing easier and reducing energy consumption. Furthermore, the films have excellent processability and durability. The multi-responsive superhydrophobic flexible films demonstrate remarkable anti-icing/de-icing performance and show great potential for a wide range of applications, particularly in complex scenarios where equipment is susceptible to icing.

This study explored the high pressure phase transition behavior of 10% gelatin gel and compared the effects of four freezing treatments and subsequent Ice I to Ice III solid-solid phase transition (SSPT) treatments on the ice crystal characteristics, microstructure after thawing, gel properties, and texture of the gel samples. The melting points of the gel in the Ice I and Ice III regions were determined and the phase diagram was fitted using the polynomial and Simon-like formulas, and the resulting R 2 values were all found to be very close to 1. Utilizing a 10% sodium chloride solution as a disturbance agent facilitated the premature phase transition of gel samples, resulting in a substantial reduction in phase transition pressure by 57.4 MPa. Two pressure shift freezing methods at 160 MPa, namely pressure shift nucleation coupled with air freezing (PSF A ) and pressure shift nucleation coupled with liquid immersion freezing (PSF L ), were compared with conventional liquid immersion freezing (LIF) and air freezing (AF) techniques. The PSF A and PSF L methods significantly reduced the mean diameter, cross-sectional area, and perimeter of ice crystals within the gel, resulting in smaller pores and increased gel strength in the thawed gel. PSF L demonstrated the most favorable outcomes across all aspects. SSPT treatment on the basis of these four freezing treatments revealed that the ice crystal dimensions within the PSF L -SSPT gels were further decreased, with no significant change in gel strength observed, and with no significant differences in cohesiveness and chewiness from the untreated group. This demonstrated that the PSF L -SSPT treatment could effectively maintain the frozen food quality.

Icing of water (moisture) at subzero temperatures with different length scales is harmful to a variety of applications spanning from large-scale aircraft to small camera lens. Existing strategies relying on controlling the surface structure and material are encumbered with shortcomings of short frost delay time, poor durability, and difficulty in large-scale production. Inspired from the mucus secretion of mollusks, we introduce organohydrogel dynamic interfaces that can perform dynamic and reversible exchange of the cryoprotectant and water at the interface, resulting in exceptional antifrosting, antiadhesion, and deicing properties with long-term durability. The replenishable coating shows superlubrication to the surface ice with a sliding angle up to 1.9 ± 0.4o and a frost delay time up to 970 ± 31 min in the presence of water spray (99% relative humidity) at subzero temperatures. The strategy offers a reliable and scalable solution to prevent engineering surfaces, i.e., aircraft, pavement, bridge, and other public facilities, from icing/frosting and ice adhesion, even under extreme cold environments.

A breakdown caused by the icing of power generation infrastructure is one of the serious disasters occurring in the power system. Slippery lubricant-infused porous surfaces (SLIPSs), whose ice adhesion strength is extremely low, have a promising application in the anti-icing field. In the present study, we fabricated SLIPSs with low ice adhesion strength by infusing silicone oil into an anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) substrate. In addition, the effects of the viscosity of silicone oil on the anti-icing properties and durability of the SLIPSs were investigated. The results show that a lower viscosity silicone oil brings about more slippery surfaces and lower ice adhesion strength. The ice adhesion strength was reduced by 99.3% in comparison with the bare Al alloy. However, low-viscosity silicone oil has worse de-icing resistance and heat resistance. Additionally, the porous films filled with low-viscosity silicone oil possess a better self-healing property after icing/de-icing cycles and followed by exposure to the atmosphere. When the viscosity of silicone oil is 50 mPa·s, the SLIPSs exhibit the best durability for anti-icing. Even after 21 de-icing tests or 168 h of heating at 90 °C, the ice adhesion strength still remains below 10% compared with that of bare Al. This work provides some useful advice for the design and fabrication of anti-icing SLIPSs.

Corrosion and surface icing inflict significant economic costs and resource depletion. The development of integrated protection strategies that combine both anti-corrosion and anti-icing functionalities is therefore crucial, yet remains a formidable scientific and engineering challenge. In this paper, we fabricated a fluorine-free photothermal superhydrophobic coating for integrated passive anti-icing, active deicing, and anti-corrosion applications via a facile spray-coating method. The coating, denoted as CB/ZIF-8@PDA@HD-POS@PSZ, was constructed using carbon black (CB) and ZIF-8@PDA as the key photothermal components. It exhibits excellent superhydrophobicity with a water contact angle (CA) of 153.2 ± 0.5° and a sliding angle (SA) of 1.1 ± 0.2°, along with efficient photothermal conversion under simulated solar irradiation and superior mechanical stability. Electrochemical tests revealed a four order of magnitude increase in the low-frequency impedance modules (|Z| 0.01Hz ) and a three order of magnitude reduction in corrosion current density ( I corr ) compared to the uncoated substrates. Under conditions of −20 °C, water droplets on the coated surface exhibited 5.6 times longer freezing time than that on the uncoated substrate. Under 1.0 sun illumination, the frozen water droplets were completely melted within 409 s, demonstrating outstanding passive delayed icing and active photothermal deicing capabilities. We believe the developed fluorine-free photothermal superhydrophobic coating offers an energy-efficient and multifunctional strategy for combating corrosion and icing in harsh environments.

Well-tailored construction of icephobic surfaces with mechanical robustness and investigation of the structure–property relationships at the molecular level are highly desirable. Herein, a series of norbornene-based fluorinated polyolefin copolymers (FPOR-x) with varying norbornenyl dodecafluoroheptyl ester (NDFHE) molar fractions (0–100 mol %) were well-designed and fabricated via living ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) employing NDFHE and norbornenyl pentafluorophenyl ester (NPFPE) as the soft and hard segments, respectively. The mechanical and icephobic properties of the fluorinated copolymers can be regulated by adjusting the soft NDFHE contents. As a result, the well-designed norbornene-based copolymers exhibited a wide range of tunable mechanical properties, including tensile strength ranging from 0.2 to 26.4 MPa, elastic modulus ranging from 0.6 to 593.7 MPa, and breaking elongations ranging from 5718.7% to 3.7%, correlating with the proportion of soft NDFHE content. Furthermore, the synergistic interplay between soft and hard segments, particularly the hardness in the majority and softness in the minority or vice versa, could achieve a significant difference in the local modulus and enhance the propagations of cracks within the three-phase regions (soft regions/hard regions/ice), ultimately leading to a significant reduction in ice shear strength. Notably, FPOR-25% with a tensile strength of 12.0 MPa and an elastic modulus of 227.5 MPa exhibited a remarkably low ice shear strength of 57.7 kPa. This study not only highlights the relationship between the polymer molecular structure and surface icephobic properties but also breaks the limitations of icephobic surfaces with a low modulus.

Icing negatively impacts various industrial sectors and daily life, often leading to severe safety problems and substantial economic losses. In this work, a fluorinated resin coating with embedded graphene nanoflakes is prepared using a spin-coating curing process. The results shows that the ice adhesion strength is reduced by ≈97.0% compared to the mirrored aluminum plate, and the icing time is delayed by a factor of 46.3 under simulated solar radiation power of 96 mW cm −2 (1 sun) at an ambient temperature of −15 °C. The superior anti/de-icing properties of the coating are mainly attributed to the synergistic effect of the fluorinated resin with a low surface energy, the rough structure of the sandblasted aluminum plate, which reduces the contact area, and the embedded graphene nanoflakes with a superior photothermal effect. Furthermore, the hydrogen bonding competition effect between the exposed-edge oxygen-containing functional groups of the embedded graphene nanoflakes and water molecules further improves the anti-icing properties. This work proposes a facile preparation method to prepare coatings with excellent anti/de-icing properties, offering significant potential for large-scale engineering applications.

Anti-icing/de-icing coatings on equipment surfaces are becoming an important protective measure against frost formation and buildup, especially when they are used in very harsh environments. Herein, perfluorodecyltriethoxysilane (FAS) has been grafted onto the surface of graphene (GPE) via hydrolysis in an alkaline condition. The FAS modified graphene (F-GPE) is hydrophobic and conductive. A photothermal and electrothermal superhydrophobic coating is obtained by mixing F-GPE into epoxy resin as a filler for anti/de-icing in cold condition. The coating has a fast electrothermal response speed and rapidly changes the surface temperature of the coating covered with ice and snow from −20 °C to 3.7 °C within 30 s under the safe voltage of 10–15 V. Even under frost conditions, the coating with ice layers could be restored through the synergy of light and electric-to-heat conversion. The ice layer is initially melt in about 90 s, and the ice-waterdrop mixture can be easily removed on the superhydrophobic F-GPE coating. In addition, the coating shows superior mechanical strength. These remarkable properties make it valuable for application and more possibilities in the all-weather anti-icing and de-icing field.

In this paper, a new type of ice - based triboelectric nanogenerator (ICE-TENG) has been fabricated to harvest energy in cold weather. Ice is a preferred material for designing TENGs in cold winter, alpine or snowy mountain regions because of its cleanness, environmental protection, abundant reserves, low friction, and self-healing properties. The short-circuit current and voltage can achieve 2.4 µA and 48 V with 4 mm thickness of ice layer, 30 N loadings, and 5 Hz contact frequency, which can be useful in some practical applications such as lighting LEDs and charging capacitors. The ICE-TENG possesses excellent stability and can reach an output power of 35 µW under 20 MΩ loading resistance. The coefficient of friction between ice and other friction pairs is negligible, and it can even become super-slippery with the coefficient of friction below 0.008. Thus, the wear of the friction pairs is small, which can help TENG to have a long working life. Besides, due to the rapid phase change of ice, the ICE-TENG exhibits a commendable self-healing ability and maintains the original output performance after several damage and repair processes. To simulate the practical applications, a single electrode ICE-TENG driven by walking has been designed for harvesting energy on the ice surface. Because of the difference in electric output before and after the ice fragmentation, the ICE-TENGs are designed to construct a warning system to remind the danger when the ice surface suddenly shatters. Moreover, such ICE-TENGs are capable of lighting “ICE” LEDs and powering an electric watch with footsteps. This illustrates a promising potential in self-powered systems such as danger warning, charge shortage, and energy harvesting.
