Activation of spring jasmine wood impregnated with homologous bio-oil: Influence of organics in bio-oil on pore development

Linghui Kong,Yuewen Shao,Runxing Sun,Shu Zhang,Yi Wang,Jun Xiang,Song Hu,Dong Wang,Chuanjun Leng,Xun Hu

Bio-oil contains abundant aliphatic organics, which can be used to impregnate a biomass feedstock for increasing aliphatic content, as aliphatics are important for pore development in activation. Herein, impregnation of homologous bio-oil to spring jasmine wood (SJW) and further activation of the impregnated sample (SJW-oil) with ZnCl 2 or K 2 C 2 O 4 were conducted, aiming to explore another alternative outlet for application of bio-oil. The results showed that the impregnated bio-oil increased yield of activated carbon (AC) by 29.9 % (on SJW basis) in activation with ZnCl 2 , due to promoted condensation of organics from the impregnated bio-oil. Nevertheless, the specific surface area was reduced from 2098.5 m 2 g −1 in activation of SJW only to 1602.1 m 2 g −1 from SJW-oil, as the impregnated bio-oil suppressed infiltration of ZnCl 2 to internal structures of SJW. However, more mesopores were generated in AC-Oil-ZnCl 2 (85.9 %) than in AC-ZnCl 2 (92.5 %), originating from activation of organics in impregnated bio-oil. K 2 C 2 O 4 could easily crack organics in the impregnated bio-oil and in SJW, increasing specific surface area from 1152.2 m 2 g −1 in AC-K 2 C 2 O 4 to 1283.4 m 2 g −1 in AC-Oil-K 2 C 2 O 4 . In-situ IR characterization showed formation of additional aliphatic structures from the impregnated bio-oil and also intensified cracking reactions, favoring pore developing but diminishing AC production. The impregnated bio-oil also rendered the AC with superior performance for phenol adsorption but lowered environmental impact of the activation process.

Based on the excellent adsorption, photosensitization and electron transfer ability of biochar, the combination of photocatalyst and biochar is an effective method to improve the overall photocatalytic activity. Hence, a novel efficient CS-biochar/ZnO/TiO 2 photocatalyst with the different content of N-doped porous CS-biochar were constructed and characterized by a variety of testing methods, such as FT-IR, XRD, UV–vis DRS, SEM–EDS, PL, EIS, TPR, LSV. Photocatalytic experiments indicated that all the CS-biochar/ZnO/TiO 2 composites with different CS-biochar content exhibit excellent photocatalytic activity for Rh B degradation. Among them, 63%-CS/ZnO/TiO 2 composite has the best catalytic activity, which 94.5% of Rh B was degraded within 25 min, and the kinetic constant was 0.0993 min −1 , which is about 1.96 and 1.72 times that ZnO (0.0507 min −1 ) and TiO 2 (0.0576 min −1 ), respectively. Moreover, photoelectrochemical experiment results confirmed that CS-biochar/ZnO/TiO 2 greatly enhanced the charge separation process compare with ZnO and TiO 2 . Meanwhile, CS-biochar/ZnO/TiO 2 has excellent stability, and a possible photocatalytic mechanism was put forward.

Co-adsorption performance and mechanism of ammonium and phosphate by iron-modified biochar in water

Zixuan Huang,Bokun Chang,Yuan Tang,Qiao Li,Zhixin Zhang,Shiyu Wei,Xinyi Chang,Yajun Yang,Chenyang Xu,Feinan Hu,Jialong Lv,Wei Du

To recover nitrogen and phosphorus from water bodies and reduce their potential risk of causing eutrophication, high-temperature pyrolysis-produced biochar (HBC) modified by ferric chloride (Fe-HBC) was adopted to investigate its surface modification on the co-adsorption performance of nitrogen and phosphate. In comparison to HBC, Fe-HBC exhibited superior specific surface area, well-developed pore structure, and enriched surface functional groups while successfully loading Fe 2+ and Fe 3+ . It has been determined that the co-adsorption mechanism of ammonium and phosphate by Fe-HBC involves a combination of pore filling, ion exchange, functional group coordination, electrostatic attraction, and coprecipitation. The results from the batch adsorption experiments indicate that the ammonium adsorption capacities for Fe-HBC1, Fe-HBC2, and Fe-HBC3 were 10.59 mg/g, 10.38 mg/g, and 7.59 mg/g, respectively, while the phosphate adsorption capacities were 13.46 mg/g, 10.46 mg/g, and 15.22 mg/g, respectively. The results of the column adsorption experiments showed that too high or too low biochar percentage and flow rate were not conducive to improving the adsorption capacity of the adsorption column, and the maximum adsorption capacity of the adsorption column was achieved at a biochar percentage of 1 % and a flow rate of 1 mL/min. This study demonstrates the potential of this iron-modified biochar derived from agricultural wastes for practical application in the removal of ammonium and phosphate from wastewater.

The role of graft-modified chitosan-based coagulants in pharmaceutically combined polluted water: performance and mechanism

Yimu Qiao,Xue Han,Yijia Ren,Feiyong Chen,Cuizhen Sun,Jin Wang,Zhigang Yang,Linxu Xu,Xue Shen,Rupeng Liu

The extensive use of ibuprofen (IBU) and acetaminophen (APAP) has led to their accumulation in surface water, resulting in combined pollution with natural organic matter (NOM). In this study, a novel modified chitosan-based coagulant (CTS-DMDAAC) was successfully synthesized by adding ceric ammonium nitrate (CAN) to make chitosan (CTS) and dimethyldiallylammonium chloride (DMDAAC) produce free radicals for graft copolymerization. The study investigated the effects of pH, initial NOM concentration, and suspended particulates on the performance of contaminant removal and the characteristics of flocs. Through analysis of the Zeta potential and floc characteristics, the primary flocculation mechanisms were identified as: net capture and sweep, charge neutralization, and bridging effect. CTS-DMDAAC demonstrated effective removal of NOM, particularly humus, but encountered challenges in removing small-molecule pharmaceuticals such as IBU and APAP, with removal rates below 15%. To enhance the removal rate of small organic molecules, powdered activated carbon (PAC) was incorporated into the coagulation system, resulting in increased removal rates of IBU and APAP to 71.44% and 79.9%, respectively. Additionally, PAC improved the bridging capacity during coagulation, resulting in a 1.25-fold increase in the strength factor and a 2.34-fold increase in the recovery factor of the flocs. These findings suggest that the combined use of PAC and CTS-DMDAAC presents a novel approach for treating water bodies contaminated with NOM and pharmaceutical complexes.

Electrochemical oxidation of ammonia in a granular activated carbon/peroxymonosulfate/chlorine three-dimensional electrode system

Ze Zhang,Shuying Shen,Qiaoling Xu,Lihua Cui,Rongliang Qiu,Zhujian Huang

The electrochemical conversion of ammonia into harmless nitrogen gas (N 2 ) remains a significant challenge in wastewater treatment. This study explores the utilization of granular activated carbon (GAC) as three-dimensional particle electrodes within a peroxymonosulfate (PMS)/Cl − -PbO 2 /Ti electrochemical system to enhance ammonia oxidation and N 2 transfer efficiency. In the observed experimental parameters designated as optimal, the system demonstrated a complete amelioration of ammonia within 45 min. The porous surface of GAC electrodes facilitates increased contact area, promoting better interaction with target compounds. This interaction leads to improved mass transfer efficiency, reduced chlorine overpotential, and enhanced current response. Quenching experiments reveal the substantial involvement of hydroxyl radicals (•OH), sulfate radicals (SO 4 •− ), and chloride radicals (Cl•) in the oxidation process of NH 4 + -N, with Cl• generation through the oxidative process involving Cl − and SO 4 •− under electrical stimulation. After 90 min, a significant portion of NH 4 + -N is transformed into N 2 , achieving a conversion efficiency of 71.5 %. Additionally, the system demonstrates efficient removal of ammonia from practical aqueous environments. Three-dimensional fluorescence spectroscopic analysis confirms the system's effectiveness not only in removing ammonia but also in reducing organic substances resembling fulvic acid. These findings underscore the three-dimensional electrochemical GAC/PMS/Cl − system as a promising and efficient approach for ammonia removal in wastewater treatment applications.

Effective removal of tetracycline antibiotics from water by in-situ nitrogen-doped porous biochar derived from waste antibiotic fermentation residues

Guokai Zhu,Jieni Wang,Xinyu Zhao,Shuqin Zhang,Chenlin Wei,Chenxiao Liu,Leichang Cao,Shuguang Zhao,Jinglai Zhang,Shicheng Zhang

This study explored the utilization of waste oxytetracycline fermentation residue (OFR), abundant in nitrogen and organic matter, to prepare in-situ nitrogen-doped porous biochar (activated OFR derived biochar, AOBC) through a coupled pyrolysis process, and investigated the removal of tetracycline antibiotics (TCs) from water with the prepared AOBCs. The physicochemical characterization results showed the characterizations of abundant nitrogen functional groups, high specific surface area (1960.38 m 2 /g), and the high microporosity (61.6 %) for AOBCs. At 25 ℃, the maximum adsorption capacity calculated by Langmuir model of AOBC-3–600 for tetracycline hydrochloride (TC), chlortetracycline hydrochloride (CTC), oxytetracycline hydrochloride (OTC), and doxycycline hydrochloride (DOC) reached 473.00, 293.28, 220.61, and 282.72 mg/g, respectively. The superior fit of the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models indicated that the adsorption mechanism involved both the physical effect (pore filling) and chemical interactions (electrostatic attraction, hydrogen bonding, π-π interaction, and Lewis acid-base interaction). Environmental risk assessments substantiated the absence of residual oxytetracycline and antibiotic resistance genes in the prepared biochar, indicating its application safety. This research provides a sustainable route to simultaneously treat the antibiotic contamination in water and rationally utilize antibiotic fermentation residues.

Boron Removal in Aqueous Solutions Using Adsorption with Sugarcane Bagasse Biochar and Ammonia Nanobubbles

Lianying Liao,Hao Chen,Chunlin He,Gjergj Dodbiba,Toyohisa Fujita

Boron is a naturally occurring trace chemical element. High concentrations of boron in nature can adversely affect biological systems and cause severe pollution to the ecological environment. We examined a method to effectively remove boron ions from water systems using sugarcane bagasse biochar from agricultural waste with NH3nanobubbles (10% NH3and 90% N2). We studied the effects of the boron solution concentration, pH, and adsorption time on the adsorption of boron by the modified biochar. At the same time, the possibility of using magnesium chloride and NH3nanobubbles to enhance the adsorption capacity of the biochar was explored. The carbonization temperature of sugarcane bagasse was investigated using thermogravimetric analysis. It was characterized using XRD, SEM, and BET analysis. The boron adsorption results showed that, under alkaline conditions above pH 9, the adsorption capacity of the positively charged modified biochar was improved under the double-layer effect of magnesium ions and NH3nanobubbles, because the boron existed in the form of negatively charged borate B(OH)4−anion groups. Moreover, cations on the NH3nanobubble could adsorb the boron. When the NH3nanobubbles with boron and the modified biochar with boron could coagulate each other, the boron was removed to a significant extent. Extended DLVO theory was adopted to model the interaction between the NH3nanobubble and modified biochar. The boron adsorption capacity was 36 mg/g at room temperature according to a Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The adsorbed boron was investigated using FT-IR and XPS analysis. The ammonia could be removed using zeolite molecular sieves and heating. Boron in an aqueous solution can be removed via adsorption with modified biochar with NH3nanobubbles and MgCl2addition.

Environmentally friendly zero-valent iron-modified biochar beads for high-performance antimonite removal from aqueous solution

Ai Wu,Xiuxiu Jia,Kai Zhang,Jiahui Shao,Jingtao Mao,Zhihua Yang,Zhengda Duan,Wen-Tong Chen,Fengqin Chang,Shixiong Wang,Guangzhi Hu

Antimony (Sb) contamination in aquatic environments has emerged as a significant environmental concern because of extensive industrial activities involving Sb and its associated health hazards. Nano-zero-valent iron (nFe) is recognised for its efficacy in heavy metal remediation; however, its application is often hindered by poor dispersion and suboptimal adsorption properties. We designed an innovative approach in which nFe is calcined with biochar to mitigate agglomeration and subsequently amalgamated with sodium alginate to form composite gel spheres (PEI/SA/BCFe) in a calcium chloride solution. The ability of these gel spheres to remove antimonite (Sb(III)) from water was evaluated under various conditions, including pH, initial concentration, the presence of competing ions, temperature, and cycling experiments. The R 2 fitted to the Langmuir isotherm were 0.99, 0.96 and 0.97, respectively. The adsorption was carried out under thermostatic shaking conditions, and the maximum adsorption capacity was 621.04 mg g −1 , 509.34 mg g −1 , and 373.10 mg g −1 at 10, 25, and 40 °C, respectively, which corresponded to removal efficiencies of 72.5%, 65.3% and 63.7%, respectively. The underlying mechanisms driving the adsorption process were primarily attributed to the oxidation of Sb(III), inner-sphere complexation, and coprecipitation . This comprehensive study not only highlights the potential of PEI/SA/BCFe as an effective solution for mitigating antinomy contamination in water but also contributes valuable insights into the mechanistic aspects of heavy metal adsorption.

Enhanced production of advanced renewable methanol-rich low-carbon alcohols via photocatalytic conversion of bio-oil

Jingang Yao,Guohui Zhang,Guanyi Chen,Beibei Yan,Xin Su,Dongmei Bi,Guiying Xu,Ke Yang,Yan Yao

Bio-oil, deriving from sustainable biomass pyrolysis, presents significant promise as a source for the production of renewable low-carbon alcohols (C 1–4 alcohols). Nevertheless, the intricate composition of bio-oil necessitates research into more eco-friendly and efficient conversion methodologies. In this context, an innovative and sustainable approach utilizing titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) as a catalyst has been successfully devised and implemented for photocatalytic conversion of bio-oil into methanol-enriched C 1–4 alcohols under mild conditions. The TiO 2 catalyst has undergone a comprehensive characterization, unveiling its remarkable crystallinity, mesoporous structure and outstanding optical absorption properties. Significantly, at ambient temperature, employing a TiO 2 catalyst loading of 4 wt%, a reaction duration of 3 h and an ethanol-to-bio-oil molar ratio of 12:1, TiO 2 demonstrated an exceptional selectivity of 66.24 % for C 1–4 alcohols, with particular emphasis on a methanol selectivity of 38.96 %. This stands in stark contrast to the control groups, one of which lacks ethanol (resulting in selectivities of 2.18 % and 0.57 %, respectively), and the other lacks bio-oil (resulting in selectivities of 0 % and 0 %, respectively). Impressively, the overall alcohol selectivity reached a remarkable 68.79 %. Even after undergoing 5 reuse cycles, TiO 2 continued to exhibit remarkable photocatalytic activity, maintaining methanol selectivity at 33.56 % and alcohol selectivity at 48.88 %. Additionally, the photocatalytic mechanism of bio-oil over TiO 2 has been reasonably theorized. The results highlight the potential of TiO 2 photocatalytic conversion of bio-oil to produce C 1–4 alcohols rich in methanol.

Ex-situ combined with in-situ catalytic pyrolysis: A strategic approach to enhancing furans production from biomass

Wang Dechao,Yang Xinyu,Huang Haihan,Wu Kaiyue,Zheng Jie,Yao quan,Lin Jian,Huang Yuanbo,Liu Peng,Wang Duo,Ye Yueyuan,Zheng Zhifeng

Biomass, as a renewable resource, holds great significance in its conversion into valuable chemicals or fuels, representing a crucial avenue for its utilization. Nevertheless, catalytic pyrolysis currently faces constraints, demanding further enhancements in both the selectivity of target products and the recyclability of catalysts. Herein, we reported an innovative in-situ combined with ex-situ catalytic pyrolysis strategy by using red mud loaded with cobalt (Co/RM) and activated carbon (AC) as the catalyst for this combined catalytic pyrolysis system. By optimization of process conditions, the selectivity of furans was further improved significantly. The results showed that with a combined catalytic system constituted of Co/RM and Co/RM + AC, under conditions of a pyrolysis temperature of 400 °C, a catalytic temperature of 500 °C, and a mass ratio of catalyst to raw material of 20:1, the selectivity of furans can be increased to 80.1 %. Remarkably, this combined catalytic system exhibits excellent catalytic activity for furans production even after 20 cycles of operation. Moreover, the established combined catalytic system is capable of converting tobacco, bamboo, and wood into furans with more than 100 % increasement. These results suggest that this novel strategy harbors broad application prospects and has the potential to catalyze more efficient exploitation of biomass resources.

Low-Temperature Selective Catalytic Reduction DeNOX and Regeneration of Mn–Cu Catalyst Supported by Activated Coke

Xusheng Ren,Zhiliang Ou,Bang Wu

The activated coke is a promising support for catalysts, and it is important to study the performance of the activated coke catalyst on the removal of NOx. In the current research, a series of the activated coke-supported Mn–Cu catalysts are prepared by the incipient wetness impregnation method. The effects of the molar ration of Mn/Cu, the content of Mn–Cu, the calcination temperature, and reaction space velocity on NO conversion are investigated, and it was found that the 8 wt.% Mn0.7Cu0.3/AC had the best catalytic activity when the calcination temperature was 200 °C. The existence of SO2caused the catalyst to deactivate, but the activity of the poisoning catalyst could be recovered by different regeneration methods. To uncover the underlying mechanism, BET, XPS, XRD, SEM and FTIR characterizations were performed. These results suggested that the specific surface area and total pore volume of the poisoning catalyst are recovered and the sulfite and sulfate on the surface of the poisoning catalysts are removed after water washing regeneration. More importantly, the water washing regeneration returns the value of Mn3+/Mn4+, Cu2+/Cu+, and Oα/Oβ, related to the activity, basically back to the level of the fresh catalyst. Thus, the effect of water washing regeneration is better than thermal regeneration. These results could provide some helpful information for the design and development of the SCR catalysts. Keywords:activated coke;low-temperature NH3-SCR;sulfur poisoning;regeneration

Incorporation of phytic acid into reed straw-derived hydrochar for highly efficient and selective adsorption of uranium(VI)

Hongtao Xia,Yuting Liu,Yang Wang,Zihao Feng,Qi Ren,Jianqi Lv,Yang Li,Yanjun Du,Yun Wang

An innovative phytic acid modified reed straw-derived hydrochar composite (PA-C-RBC) was prepared by using inexpensive reed straw and non-toxic phytic acid for the removal of uranium(VI) from aqueous environment. Several characterization results showed that PA-C-RBC was rough and porous with a large number of hydroxyl, carboxyl, and phosphate groups. The uranium(VI) adsorption process by PA-C-RBC conformed to pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir models, and the theoretical maximal adsorption capacity could attain 418.78 mg/g at pH 5.0. PA-C-RBC had 72.66 % of selectivity and 6772.99 mL/g of distribution coefficient for U(VI). Due to the strong chelating between the hydroxyl and phosphate groups on PA-C-RBC and U(VI), PA-C-RBC had excellent adsorption selectivity. These finding highlighted a high potential for removing U(VI) from aqueous solutions.
